Go Behind the Scenes at a Budweiser Brewery in New Hampshire

You Might Even Meet Budweiser's Famous Clydesdales

budweiser tours in nh

Kim Knox Beckius

Budweiser is America's—and maybe even the world's—most recognizable beer brand, but many New England visitors don't realize that Anheuser-Busch has a manufacturing and bottling facility in Merrimack, New Hampshire , where beer fans can drink, eat, go behind the scenes for a brewery experience and even meet the famous Budweiser Clydesdales a few times each year when the East Coast Traveling Hitch is home resting up for its next parade or other appearance.

If you're a beer fan, the Anheuser-Busch factory in Merrimack is the largest of the best breweries to visit in New Hampshire and a place to marvel at modern mechanization and the scale of production. The Budweiser Brewery has been operating in New Hampshire for nearly 50 years, and while changes in 2019 eliminated some of the facility's cherished offerings (including free brewery tours for all ages and daily visit with the Clydesdales), there are still reasons to include a Merrimack stop on your New Hampshire itinerary.

Reserve Your Brewery Tour

Free Budweiser brewery tours are no longer offered in Merrimack, but that doesn't mean you can't get a look at the beermaking process. Visitors now have two options, available Wednesday through Sunday:

The Beermaster Tour : Buy tickets online ($35 for ages 21 and up, $10 for guests ages 13 to 20, no younger children allowed) for this in-depth and educational experience that incorporates a full tour of the brewing plant including the chance to see the brew house, the lager cellar, the ale cellar, and the packaging facility, plus bonus treats including the chance to taste fresh beer directly from a finishing tank (if you're 21+). Beermaster Tour participants also leave with a a variety of commemorative gifts.

The Bud Light Tour : Purchase tickets online ($10 for adults 21 and up, $5 for guests ages 3 to 20, and free for children under 3) for this factory tour focused on company history and the brewing process for Bud Light: the top-selling beer in the world. You'll step inside the brew house, the lager cellar, the ale cellar, and the finishing cellar; watch the mesmerizing bottling process through observation windows; sample Bud Light straight from the finished beer tank (if you're 21+); and enjoy an additional sample of a beer crafted on-site when the tour concludes in the hospitality room.

Private group tours are an option in New Hampshire, as well.

Meet the Clydesdales... Maybe

The Budweiser Clydesdales are the beverage industry's most recognizable mascots, and you can sometimes meet these famous horses by visiting the Clydesdale Hamlet at Anheuser-Busch's brewery in Merrimack, New Hampshire.

In 1933, August A. Busch, Jr. gave a hitch of Clydesdales to his father in celebration of the resumption of brewing in St. Louis following the repeal of Prohibition. Clydesdales, a powerful breed of draft horses, originated in the Clyde valley of Scotland, and they are known for the distinctive, feathery hair on their fetlocks—the lower parts of their legs above and behind the hooves.

If you've never heard of the Budweiser Clydesdales, then you've probably been living in a cave for several decades. These high-stepping horses make hundreds of public appearances each year in addition to appearing in television commercials and other Budweiser beer advertising.

The hitch of Clydesdales that calls New Hampshire home is one of several owned by Budweiser, which offers tours of three of its U.S. breweries . Unfortunately, as of January 1, 2019, New Hampshire is no longer where young Clydesdales are trained, and that means opportunities to see the horses in the picturesque stables here are limited. The Clydesdale training facility was relocated to Warm Springs Ranch in Booneville, Missouri, and now Merrimack is only home to the East Coast Traveling Hitch. The team is home in New Hampshire just a couple of times each year, and while they are out performing up and down the East Coast, there are no Clydesdales on the property.

Drink and Eat at the Biergarten

If you're sad there are no Clydesdales to see, you can drown your sorrows at the Biergarten, where you'll discover that Budweiser is the brewer behind many more craft beer labels than you realized. There's a fun menu of food to pair with your choice of brews, and when the fire pits are lit, you can even toast marshmallows for S'mores.

The Budweiser brewery is located at 221 Daniel Webster Highway in Merrimack, New Hampshire, which is between Nashua and Manchester. Follow the Everett Turnpike/Route 3 to exit 10, then travel east on Industrial Drive to a left on Daniel Webster Highway.

Taking a Budweiser Brewery tour in Merrimack, NH isn’t just for beer lovers. It’s also an experience for history buffs and anyone who likes to understand the ins and outs of how things are made. While you can no longer visit the world-famous Budweiser Clydesdales at this location, you can tour the facilities and sample some of the many brews made and bottled in New Hampshire.

Picking up a Brewery Tour at Budweiser, New Hampshire

Clydesdale eating hay in a stall at Budweiser Brewery in Merrimack, NH

With the number of craft breweries on the rise, it’s easy to forget about the rich and storied history of ale giants like Budweiser, and that’s just what the brewing icon hopes to combat by offering tours of 2 bottling facilities. Since tours are only offered in St. Louise and Merrimack, this is quite a treat for visitors to New England.

To take a Budweiser Brewery tour in New Hampshire, however, you’ll need to trot on over to the brand store. This where you’ll meet your guide once you have purchased tickets online .

Tours start every 20 to 30 minutes or so, and while there is a small waiting area opposite the retail outlet, most people hang around checking out the merchandise. Most also shell out some extra cash to walk home with branded gear.

As any craft brewer will tell you, the act of making beer is largely a waiting game, so don’t expect to see a lot of action on the tour, particularly if you’re visiting on a weekend. In fact, the first stop after having your photo snapped with a bronzed Clydesdale, is the mashing facility.

During the walk from the store toward the building, you’ll learn about the history of Budweiser and the story of German immigrant, Adolphus Busch, who later joined forces with client Eberhard Anheuser to form Anheuser Busch, the parent company to the Budweiser brand.

As you near the mashing facility, you’ll be asked to turn off your cell phone to avoid accidental sparks. This is where hops and barely are brought in on trains and milled into a fine grain, forming the central ingredients for Budweiser’s famous brands. Once you leave the milling facility, you’ll be allowed to turn your phone on and take pictures again.

Budweiser New Hampshire Brewery Tour Includes Tasting of Unfinished Brews

finishing tanks at Budweiser Brewery

The next stop on the tour is the Budweiser craft brewery tanks. Here the guide discusses Budweiser’s foray into specialty beers. Since the brands under fermentation at Budweiser in Merrimack change on a regular basis, the guide will also tell you a little about the particular brews being made on that day.

Leaving the craft tanks, you’ll travel next to the Budweiser or Bud Lite finishing tanks. This is where the fermentation for Budweiser’s primary beers takes place. This is also the first sampling spot on the tour where guests are allowed to sip the freshly fermented beer prior to final finishing.

Which beer you will be able to sample will depend upon which brew is in the tanks on the day you’re visiting the Budweiser New Hampshire Brewery in Merrimack. During our visit, the facility was finishing a batch of Bud Lite. A survey of the drinkers on the tour, most who sipped a few small cups, revealed that beer at this stage was a little crisper than the finished product, possibly more flavorful.

After enjoying the unfinished samples, the tour moves you along to the finishing room. This is where beechwood is added to the bottom of the tanks before the brew you just sampled is piped in.

The beechwood is designed to facilitate the lagering process wherein yeast is used to reduce some of the by-products of fermentation, mainly acetaldehyde and diacetyl. The former is reported to emit a taste like green apples or latex paint, if you can imagine the two tasting the same. The layering of beechwood gives the yeast a place to grow as it goes about its work of breaking down these distasteful byproducts.

This is also where the beer will pick up most of its carbonation as well as its alcohol content, since the majority of the fermentation occurs in these tanks. On some trips, you will be offered the option to take home a small piece of the beechwood used to age Budweiser.

Bottling Happens Day and Night at Budweiser Brewery in Merrimack, NH

Bottling line at Budweiser New Hampshire Brewery

When operating at peak capacity, the Budweiser New Hampshire Brewery turns out 57,000 cases of bottled beer in a day. You’ll see how this is possible on the last stop of the tour. Glass windows overlook the bottling plant, where you can see packaging of the bottles in action.

The tour guide will pause here and answer any lingering questions for those who are interested in the process. Others dwindle away into the tasting room, where the majority of the Budweiser Brews are available on tap, including some specialty beers.

Each guest was allowed two samplings during our first visit served in 6-ounce plastic cups. However, during our second visit to the New Hampshire brewery, drinkers in the group were asked to select a single variety which was then served in a much larger souvenir pilsner glass. O’Doul’s and various varieties of soft drinks are available for non-drinkers.

An 8-year-old Oklahoma girl got the thrill of a lifetime while at a recent Taylor Swift concert when she was selected to receive the superstar's "22" hat.

While on vacation in Scotland, Natalie Streight and her family attended a stop of the Eras Tour in Edinburg. Her family shared a video of the moment, with the Norman girl standing in front of the stage getting an up-close view of Swift performing her hit song "22."

During the song, Swift danced over to Natalie and hugged her before giving the 8-year-old her fedora and continuing the rest of the song.

At every concert during the Eras Tour, Swift gives a lucky fan a black hat that she wears during her performance of "22." The hat is the signature one Swift wore during the "22" music video, and she wears that hat to represent that era during the tour.

According to USA Today , along with giving a hat to a lucky fan, Swift also signs every brim with a metallic Sharpie.
