Cape Town Tunnel Tours: An Unusual Experience of the City's History

Normally adventure tours and educational history tours are not the same tours but I recently discovered that they can be! If you’re looking for an unusual way to explore the city of Cape Town and its history, you should consider journeying underneath it on a secret underground tunnel tour.

Silhouette in underground tunnel

*I was a guest of Good Hope Adventures but all thoughts and opinions are my own.

The castle dungeon and tunnel tour .

Castle of Good Hope - exterior view

Why I wanted to do it:

Honestly, i just thought it would be fun to be able to say i went journeying through these dark mysterious underground tunnels, tunnels built between the 17th and 19th centuries and possibly haunted. (fun fact: anything old enough to be considered a heritage site is also automatically old enough to be presumed haunted.)  i wanted to be able to check off another adventure-filled item from my cape town bucket list. i wasn’t really thinking about increasing my knowledge of our country’s rich and complex history.  as a bonus, i was hoping to get a pic of  rodrigo with the  castle of good hope to add to his landmark photo bucket list (another blog i will one day post). , what i was concerned about:, the feeling of claustrophobia:  after i proudly announced my plans to a friend she complimented me on my bravery, adding that she couldn’t imagine being in an underground tunnel or having to negotiate dark crawl spaces. “crawl spaces” i hadn’t thought about that  my fitness levels:  i was concerned that i wasn’t physically fit enough. i am always the one slowing down the group whenever i go on a hike with my friends. climbing down into the tunnel and not landing on my behind while everyone was watching was the part that concerned me the most. the dark:  yes, i'm in my thirties, don't judge me covid:  at the time of the tour, omnicron seemed to be everywhere. i was a bit concerned that i would be in close proximity to people who may not take covid protocols as seriously as i do.    sewerage:  aware that there is water running through these tunnels, i was a bit concerned that the tunnel would feel - and smell - less like a tunnel and more like a sewer.  and finally, bugs  yes, by far my greatest concern about doing this tour was the bugs. i’m not a fan of rodents either but i saw some youtube footage that included some albino cockroaches (they don’t need pigmentation if they never see the light of day) gathering in groups (probably to plan how they would run above the heads of tourists and drop down onto them).  cockroaches can be real jerks, my experience: .

And what about my concerns?

  • The feeling of claustrophobia:  There were absolutely no crawl spaces like the ones I was concerned about, in fact, these tunnels were big, approximately two meters in diameter, so big that you can’t touch both sides at the same time.
  • My fitness levels:   The part when you climb down into the tunnel was a bit daunting. It is quite a way down if you were to fall. Fortunately, between a guide at the top and another at the bottom (both of whom definitely remembered their patience pills that day), I was skillfully directed into the tunnel.
  • The dark:  While my headlamp thingy definitely wasn't the brightest, I managed to position myself in the middle of the group so there was always light (from other people’s head torches) behind me and in front of me. And the part where we turned off our torches was more fun than scary.

Headlamps illuminate tunnel on underground tour in Cape Town

  • COVID:  Matt and his team were quite strict about their COVID protocol and I really appreciated that. Masks were worn the entire time we were in the tunnel and we were offered hand sanitiser a number of times throughout the tour.
  • Sewerage:  The water was actually surprisingly clear and apart from a bit of a musty smell, it was very pleasant. So if you were hoping to spot a ninja turtle, this is not the tour for you!
  • The bugs:  While I spotted quite a few cockroaches down there (of an impressive size too), they had conventional cockroach pigmentation and they were very, very respectful of my personal space. They were woke roaches!

Underground tunnel tour selfie with COVID mask

What surprised me about the tour:

  • I didn’t realise that the tour would take us into the fort itself, I assumed that we would just be in the vicinity of it. (I probably didn't read the description correctly.) I didn’t expect to be able to kill two Cape Town bucket list birds with one tour stone.  If you're thinking of visiting the Castle of Good Hope, this is definitely the best way to do it!
  • If you are well-travelled internationally, forts can get a little redundant.  Having seen a lot of forts throughout Europe and the Caribbean, I secretly suspected that this fort would not be as interesting as the ones I had seen overseas.  I know that South Africa didn’t just build this one because Europe was doing it but we do frequently try to recreate the same things we’ve experienced overseas (like artisanal food markets) and somehow ours are never as good. This fort was very impressive. Having a guide to show us around made it even more so.
  • More than anything else, I expected it to be only an adventure tour that leaves you with bragging rights but it was definitely a history lesson as well. -And not a boring one from a teacher who failed to achieve their dream career and had to settle for this job instead (like the one’s I had in high school). No, Matt and his team were so knowledgeable and passionate about the history of the area that it was as infectious as the Omnicron variant that forced some of the other participants to cancel! I was surprised by how much I learnt and how much I could enjoy something so educational.

The History of the Castle of Good Hope

  • The Dolphin Pool - No, it was not built to house live dolphins, it got its name from the fountain in the middle, silly!

Dolphin pool at the Castle of Good Hope

  • De Kat is the name of the building that runs through the centre. It once housed the residence of the governor and second-in-command, as well as a large council hall that now houses the Iziko Wiliam Fehr Collection of historical colonial artwork and antique furniture.  And of course, the occasional contemporary art installation (at least I think that's what's on this table):

Meeting hall at the Kat at the Castle of Good Hope

  • The building's balcony was used for announcements and judicial sentences:

  • The castle's bell tower was completed in 1683 and houses a bell cast in Amsterdam in 1697:

To answer some of the questions I had before the tour:

  • Fit enough to climb through a smallish manhole and down some very tiny rungs protruding out of the tunnel wall.
  • You then wade through water that may be somewhat slippery for quite a while (I’m not very good at judging distances). We were told we could straddle the stream but would be less likely to slip if we just walked in it which is what we all did. The ground is uneven with some deeper pits along the way. The walls are too far apart to be used as support.
  • It is not suitable for children or anyone with mobility challenges.

Darkness of the tunnel on underground tunnel tour

  • Oxygen: Before we entered the tunnel, our guide checked the oxygen levels to make sure that they were within a normal range and there were no toxic gases in the tunnels.
  • COVID: The numbers of the group were are limited, mask-wearing was enforced and hand sanitiser was provided.
  • Physical safety: The guides helped guide us into and out of the tunnels as safely as possible. The tunnels are slippery with uneven ground.
  • Water levels and weather conditions: This tour does not operate in winter, the rainy season. We were also forewarned that it could be cancelled at short notice if there was any rain. A member of the team remained above ground to monitor the situation throughout the tour.

Castle of Good Hope entrance

  • Old non-slip trainers. (In retrospect I believe water shoes would have had better grip). Gumboots or wellies could work too. Either way, you will be walking through water and you will need to wash them afterwards. I wouldn’t wear anything I really like a lot. (And bring a change of shoes for the drive home.)
  • Shorts - Unless you enjoy having wet pant legs clinging to your calves, I would say wear shorts. The tunnels are also quite warm so your legs won’t get cold. Old clothes are advised.
  • A really good headlamp. I slowed the group down because I couldn’t see in front of me.
  • If you want to take pictures I would suggest a waterproof casing for your phone or camera in case you drop it. A moon bag, or 'fanny pack' (again, for my North American readers), may be useful to keep your phone or camera within arm's reach while also freeing up your hands.
  • Sunscreen - What? You probably thought this may be the one time when I don’t recommend sunscreen but it’s helpful for when you explore the castle afterwards.

Hidden beneath the streets of Cape Town is one of the oldest catchment system in South Africa. The underground tunnels of Cape Town began as canals that transported millions of liters of fresh spring water from Table Mountain directly out into the sea.

The indigenous Khoi people called Cape Town “Camissa” which means ‘the place of sweet waters’. There used to be four rivers and 36 springs coming from the mountain and running through the city, supplying the entire population with clean water. In 1652 the Dutch colonizers built the canals to channel a large amount of fresh water straight into the ocean. These canals became an essential network for transport and an important water source. After many years of effective and efficient use, the waterways were extensively used for waste disposal. They were eventually covered up with bricks in the 1800’s for being toxic and dangerous to the public.

View this post on Instagram A post shared by Brendon Wainwright (@brendon_wainwright)

Today, most of these old canals lie unused beneath the City even though mountain and spring waters still flow through them into the sea. Cape Town uses only 15% of the water running through this water system and relies on rainwater and distant dams to meet the city’s demands for water.

Spicing Up The Old

Despite being abandoned and unutilized, the tunnels are becoming a popular tourist site. Locals and tourists find joy in exploring the old efficient water system now tucked away underneath the city. You might be wondering how gruesome it is to spend an hour or two in these tunnels. But they are surprisingly clean and well ventilated.

Yes, there is a faint musty smell in some places and high probability of seeing groups of cockroaches. But exploring these forgotten tunnels is worth a try. The rumbling sound of cars and motorcycles overhead echo through the tunnels as you explore them.

So, come and discover these historic underground tunnels of Cape Town. Book your tour now with  Good Hope Adventures.

What You Should Know About Tunnel Tours in Cape Town

So, what are tunnel tours in Cape Town all about? Here is some info to get you started…

Dating back as far as 1652, many parts of the old canals and underground rivers still exist today. These tunnels once brought fresh water to the Company Gardens and ships that came to rest in the harbour, becoming walk-ways that had bridges built over them in later years. Cape Town once had the nickname of Little Amsterdam thanks to its flowing rivers and its Gentleman’s Walk. Over the years, these canals became sewerage lines, but in 1895, they were dried out, arched over and all but forgotten until the advent of explorers who sought to discover the mountain streams and old architecture that once brought running water to the city.

* Tours depart at the Castle of Good Hope, and end either back at the Castle or below the slopes of Table Mountain.

* Departure time   is about 10h00 to meet and 10h30 to set off, with 12h30 being the average time of return.

* Typical duration of a tour is between one and three hours and include a qualified guide, professional rescue medic, permits and hard hats.

Taking back the Mother City's water heritage

Also read: From tunnels to bunkers, Good Hope Adventures are known for their various tours of Cape Town's undergrounds .

When I arrive at the sandy parking lot on the corner of Bradwell and Buitenkant streets in Gardens on a sunny, blue-skied Saturday morning, the usually nondescript space is alive with excited pre-teen girls and parents. The gaggle of family members is dressed in a varied assortment of coloured gumboots, gasping and shaking their heads at a small hole in the ground. We’re all here to explore the mysterious tunnels that snake beneath Cape Town, long forgotten channels that carry litres upon litres of fresh water straight into the ocean. Once main veins of transport and a crucial water source, the system is now no more than a living relic. Though, thanks to a project called Reclaim Camissa, a movement that hopes to revive the waterways by educating people as they follow the path of an ancient river, our group is about to plunge into a roaring rush of what used to be an essential network for the developing world.

Dwain, one of the guides at Figure of 8, a team-building company that organises these underground tours in association with Reclaim Camissa, fills me in on the history as, one by one, the girls disappear into darkness.

Cape Town owes its existence to the abundant water flow that compelled Dutch travellers on their way to the East Indies to stay and establish the Mother City as a halfway point and oasis. At that time, the city relied on four streams and 36 springs, which are now diverted to the Atlantic. The cool, clean life-giving liquid from one of these systems, Camissa, which means “the place of sweet waters” in Khoisan, filled holding tanks on ships, provided refreshment for farm and dockworkers on land and replenished irrigation systems, wash houses and public water fountains. The city even got electricity before London did, in 1895, thanks to energy generated by the strong flowing source.

What’s more, open canals, or graachts (where the streets Buitengracht and Heerengracht got their name), were the lifeline of society, even determining the city’s layout. These were tunnelled off in the 19 th century when the British deemed the exposed water source unsanitary and roads more important. So, the above ground tributaries were buried underground, where gallons of water still flow today. The idea behind Reclaim Camissa is to give Cape Town back its water heritage and integrate city life with this natural system, a concept the founder, Caron Von Zeil, calls “civic hydrology”.

When it’s my turn to go below, I ease my way down the way we’re told to -- your right foot goes into a brick-sized hole into the side, then you lower your left foot down to a little concrete ledge before splashing into the steady stream of clear water pounding noisily over slippery bricks. Dwain stays at the top to close off the manhole, and after one last happy wave and obligatory sewer joke, he turns off the sun.

cape town sewer tour

The initial limited space and darkness are not as overwhelming as you’d expect, and luckily, I’m short enough so that I don’t ever have to bend more than my neck. We proceed down the narrow tunnel in single file, walking in a pseudo-split, the bottom of our shoes providing grip on the side of the walls, the water flowing in a constant, infinite rush beneath our legs. Every now and then we see emergency exits casting tubes of light into the otherwise headlamp-lit darkness. Narrower tunnels jut out to the sides, and one of them has a slimy green root growing out of it, a sign of life.

“Once we have living water back again, we have a living city,” Caron once said in a TEDx talk. An urbanist, environmentalist and systems designer with a master’s degree in environmental planning and landscape architecture, she imagines a Cape Town centred around the very waters we’re wading through: children playing in open air public spaces, learning about water filtration; Parisian-style navigable waterways running under Strand Street; and a natural source of good, safe drinking water. Reclaim Camissa’s goal is that by 2020, Cape Town can take back the title ‘Place of Sweet Waters’ and a scheme will be in place that recognises the need for city planning and design that puts water back at the centre of life.

It’s difficult to picture this utopia as our dark, wet walk continues like an unfolding horror movie. We wander past nightmarish colonies of cockroaches, charcoal-grey cobwebs and multi-legged creepy crawlies slipping out of the overhead crevices. The eeriness is also interesting and kind of beautiful: limestone hangs off the sides of the tunnel and stalactites holding little globes of water droplets pierce downward from the brick ceiling. Though, there’s never a sense of claustrophobia or of feeling trapped, and once in a while a breeze wafts away some of the weird, indeterminable smells. Trucks and motorcycles grumble above ground, and I wonder if the people up there, doing their Saturday shopping, are aware that below rests an efficient and ancient system that could be, as it once was, integrated into everyday life.

As of 2013, none of Reclaim Camissa’s proposals have come to fruition, but that doesn’t mean that the concepts of using water as a source of power or as communal area focal point are going completely ignored.  The supply from Stadsfontein, the main Oranjezicht spring that spouts out about 3.5 million litres of water per day (enough for every individual in the city to get a litre every 24 hours), was found to be a plentiful, economical option when it came to the construction of the Cape Town Stadium in Green Point. The year-round 40litres/second water flow is enough to meet the needs of the athletic ground, the Green Point Common, the Metropolitan Golf Course and Mouille Point Beachfront: there’s irrigation for the stadium bathrooms, and a water-powered turbine generates hydro-electricity to light up the Green Point Urban Park at night.

Otherwise though, the only known building that uses water in this sustainable manner (and they source it from a river and not the spring, says Caron) is the Wooltru building in the city. The process of reverse osmosis is used to purify water from the ground, and 75 000 litres is used every day for flushing toilets and running an air conditioning system, a fountain and a car wash. In the meantime, literally millions of litres of the precious, life-sustaining commodity flows unnoticed underfoot.

Towards the end of our walk, brick turns to ancient stone as we reach what must be the older part of the tunnel. Eventually, we come to a flood of light and a metal ladder fixed into the ground with a lock. I’m the first to climb out, blinking my eyes back into the sun and city. Table Mountain is off at a distance to the right, and a sign in front of me says the road beyond the Castle of Good Hope property gate goes to Woodstock (straight) and Zonnebloem (right). There are rows of boots and dry, happy people drinking water and eating fruit provided by FO8. I’ve just walked 2km of the 6,7km long canal, which continues its steady, secret path to the harbour, where the sweetness turns ocean-salty and becomes absolutely useless. What a waste.

Take a tunnel tour of cape town for a completely new perspective.

We all know that Cape Town has a million and one awesome tours and ways to explore the city and its surroundings. But perhaps there’s one you haven’t heard of, or you’ve heard of it, but you hadn’t had a clue how to book it. The Below the Surface tour of Cape Town gives you a completely new perspective on the city as you view it from the tunnels that run below.

cape town sewer tour

The history

In the 1860’s, when the Cape Town colonialists wanted to start expanding and building houses and roads around Cape Town, they had a slight problem. There was a magnitude of water running down from Table Mountain everyday, creating streams and rivers that run from the mountain to where the harbour is today. In order for them to achieve their industrial ideals, they closed up all these open waterways to divert millions of tons of water straight to the ocean.

cape town sewer tour

Since then, these tunnels have continued to take the water to the ocean, which is a pretty sad reality since the mountain actually supplies enough water for the entire CBD of Cape Town to use. But since it’s being wasted like this, we need to outsource our water supply. More on that later though. For now, it’s time to explore this tunneled world that exists below our city.

We entered through a manhole in a park in Vredehoek. Donned in our gumboots and headlamps, it’s safe to say that the excitement levels were pretty high. This particular section of the tunnel is only about 1.5m high, so we had to crouch-walk for the first 20 minutes or so as we started heading down toward the city centre. The water that runs along our feet is surprisingly clear, as there’s not a lot to contaminate it as it came from the mountain.

Soon the tunnel opened up wider and we were able to walk up straight. There’s a constant breeze coming in from the different manholes up above, so claustrophobes shouldn’t have a problem getting by. At two or three places our guide showed us a map of the location of a specific manhole, so you’d get an idea of where about you’re walking. Overhead, the cars drive over the manholes, echoing through the pipes.

cape town sewer tour

The tunnel is divided up into three architectural sections, displaying how the building techniques changed over the years. As you get closer to the Castle of Good Hope , you reach the oldest section of the tunnel and it’s here where the tour ended. We climbed back up a manhole and popped out – quite disorienting – on the castle grounds. Only once we regained our bearings did we realise what an incredible experience we just had.

I’d definitely recommend this tour to anyone with a slight interest in Cape Town’s history, or just the city in general. It’s absolutely fascinating.

How to book

The company organising these tunnel tours is Figure of Eight . Visit their website or the Below the Surface Tour Facebook page  to book. A tunnel tour costs R270 while a tunnel and forest tour costs R340.

Reclaim Camissa

‘Camissa’ is one of the many names for Cape Town and means ‘place of sweet waters’ in the Khoi language. As we did the forest tour before the tunnel tour, we learnt from Caron von Zeil, expert in Environmental Planning and Landscape Architecure, all about how the water that comes from the mountain is being washed straight into the ocean.

Cape Town uses only 15% of these millions of litres of water in the city and relies on distant dams and rainwater for all the rest. Cape Town has 36 natural springs where this water bubbles up from the ground and the largest supplies 3.5 million litres of water daily. Caron is proposing that, by 2020, these tunnels be reopened and the streams and rivers returned to the natural state, creating a 6.7km stretch of green land that runs from the mountain to the ocean. She is also advocating that we ‘reclaim Camissa’ and utilise these amazing natural springs rather that allowing all this precious water to run straight into the ocean.

Local’s guide to the best Cape Town tours & experiences

  • By Katja Mamacos

Table of Contents

There is so much to do in Cape Town , for so many different interests and travel styles, that it’s really impossible to condense it into one article! But if you’re looking for guided tours and experiences, this is the place to find them.

I’ve put together all the best tourist activities in Cape Town – from a local’s perspective. This means, which did I love doing best, and what experiences do I recommend to get to know our city and all that we have to offer?

Whether you’re looking for outdoor adventures (both peaceful and high-energy), cultural experiences, or food tours, these are the best ways to experience Cape Town.

Cape Town’s best outdoor tours & adventures

If you’re visiting Cape Town because of its incredible biodiversity and the fact that we have mountains, oceans (plural!), and endless opportunities for adventure, then this is your section. There’s so much to do, the activities below are guided experiences that bring you into contact with some of it!

Sailing from the V&A Waterfront

Price: R350 (~$21)

Why it’s great: Stunning views of Table Mountain and the city

cape town sunset cruise

One of the best ways to see the city is from the water – particularly the sunset cruise, as there’s nothing quite like golden hour and the pinkening clouds moving over Table Mountain!

You’ll head out on a catamaran, through the lovely harbor and out onto open waters. Tours usually pass this little red dinghy with seals lazing on it, and stop to watch the sunset dip past the horizon. Depending on the season, you might also spot a few dolphins.

I love the sailing tour as a way to see the city in a really peaceful, striking way – and with some sparkling wine, too! It’s also well-priced, making it popular among locals as well as tourists.

Read more about our experience of the Waterfront sailing trip or check sunset cruise timetable and prices !

Seal snorkeling in Hout Bay

Price: R950 (~$57)

Why it’s great: You get to see these amazing creatures twirl and race in their natural habitat

Cape Fur Seal

Off the coast of Hout Bay is Duiker Island, a rocky islet covered top to toe in Cape Fur Seals ! They pay the Hout Bay harbor daily visits, but this is their breeding ground and colony, with hundreds of juvenile and adult seals raucously living their at-home lifestyles.

There are regular tours that take people to snorkel with these ‘dogs of the sea’. They’re done carefully, switching off boat engines and avoiding coming too near the actual island. But you’ll be able to watch the lumbering animals plop into the water and become graceful acrobats. The juveniles like to show off a bit, and often stare you right in the eyes as they twist and leap and dart about. It’s a really special, unique experience, and one I’d recommend any day!

I got a bit seasick en route, so if you’re prone to seasickness, keep in mind that it’s a possibility, and keep your heavy, hot gear off till you reach the island.

Read more about our experience snorkeling with the seals or check prices and timetables !

Ocean kayaking in Hout bay

Price: R450 (~$27)

Why it’s great: It’s lovely to be right on the water, exploring our vibrant coastline and spotting marine animals

kayaking Hout Bay

Another great Hout Bay activity! This little seaside suburb of Cape Town is one of the best places in the city to find not only seals but dolphins too. Families of dolphins have started using the wide harbor as a little haven, and can often be spotted here.

It’s also a lovely way to explore the coastline, learn a bit about this part of the city, and get active. The kayaks are all tandem, so you’ll be practicing a bit of teamwork.

I recommend doing this trip on the weekend, when you can follow it up with a stroll through Bay Harbour Market. There you’ll find incredible food, impeccable coffee, and the work of a lot of local artisans.

While the Hout Bay kayaking is my favorite, there are also kayaking trips from the V&A Waterfront, from Green Point, and from various parts of False Bay!

Read more about what to do in Hout Bay or check prices and timetables !

Boulders Beach & Peninsula tour

Price: R750 (~$45)

Why it’s great: Opportunity to meet penguins without journeying to the poles! And an incredibly beautiful full-day trip

boulders beach

Boulders Beach is home to one of Cape Town’s most surprising animals – the African Penguin! These tiny suited-up little creatures nest on and near the beach, and go for swims in the icy water. You can join them for a swim (but no touching!), explore the beach, and observe them in their natural habitat from walkways and viewpoints.

Continue along the coast to Cape Point, the very tip of Africa! This is a stunning day trip , and you’ll see so much of our rocky coastline, curious animals, and native plant life. It’s one of the best ways to see the natural side of Cape Town in just one day. You can rent a car and do the trip on your own, or join a tour.

african penguins and their chicks

Read more about Boulders Beach and Cape Point .

Or check prices for the full-day Cape Peninsula tour !

Table mountain hiking tour

Price: Starting at R1,400 (~$78)

Why it’s great: Hiking up the iconic Table Mountain is must-do (and free) – this is just the guided, informative version

cape town sewer tour

No one should visit Cape Town without seeing Table Mountain! If you don’t have the fitness required to hike it, catch the cable car up – ideally during a weekday, otherwise you may be standing in a queue for an hour.

If you do want to tackle the challenge, it is so worthwhile! You’ll see vegetation that grows nowhere else – plants endemic to Table Mountain alone – and such fantastic views. I recommend Skeleton Gorge and Nursery Ravine as two of the absolute best routes. Just don’t go alone – number one safety tip for Cape Town is to always do things in a group.

If you’d prefer a tour guide so that you don’t have to worry about group sizes and navigation, and can learn more as you go, check prices for this hike up and cable car down or this hike up India Venster (another Table Mountain trail)!

Kelp foraging workshop in Scarborough

Price: R850 (~$45)

Why it’s great: You get to learn so much and discover just how amazing and delicious kelp is!

Lindy showing us what kelp we can eat

The coastal foraging workshop is such a unique and fun experience! It includes foraging for seaweeds and kelp along the coastline, followed by a five-course meal prepared using the same seaweeds, coastal plants, and home-grown vegetables.

Lindy Taverner, the facilitator, teaches about the diverse seaweeds and small species that kelp forests protect alongside how to forage and process seaweeds as a nutritious food source. You learn how to identify different oceanic plants and their optimal methods of preparation, while Lindy emphasized the importance of sustainable foraging practices, including only picking half the seaweed and leaving the stem intact for regrowth.

After foraging, we were treated to a feast at Lindy’s home. The dishes included nori chips, caramelised seaweed candy, kelp lasagna, and miso soup with kelp noodles.

The RE Wild workshop offers a unique experience that not only broadens culinary horizons but also strengthens your connection with nature and your understanding of sustainable foraging practices.

Safari and game drive

Price: R4,400 (~$260)

Why it’s great: With game drives and on-foot wildlife tracking, this is an amazing way to see more of our nature – and explore beyond Cape Town

elephants at the waterhole

Many who visit South Africa have the Big Five in mind – but they’re not actually that easy to find near Cape Town. You can visit Aquila , the closest game reserve, or do a multi-day trip to the Garden Route. Both are good options and will show you more of the country’s wild side!

My top recommendation is the multi-day tour, because it takes you to my old hometown of Oudtshoorn and introduces you to the entirely unique Klein Karoo . You’ll do 4×4 safari game drives and track wildlife on foot with a local ranger, and explore the area.

If you want to get really into it, you can even do a 5-day safari and throw in a trip to Addo Elephant Park!

Check prices for the 2-day Wildlife Safari !

City Sightseeing Hop-On Hop-Off Tour

Price: R292 (~$16)

Why it’s great: You can see so much of the city in one day

red bus tour cape town

The hop-on-hop-off bus tour is an easy, convenient way to explore Cape Town. You’ve likely done the same tour in other cities around the world!

The bus stops at our city’s most popular tourist attractions, including Kirstenbosch Botanical Gardens, Camps Bay and Long Street. There are different routes, and you can choose between a focus on the outdoors, the winelands, and history.

Read more about the hop-on-hop-off sightseeing tour , or check ticket prices and timetables !

Food tours, vineyard-hopping & cooking classes

If your vision of the perfect vacation includes a lot of wine, unique and delicious food, and fun foodie experiences, these Cape Town tours are for you!

Franschhoek wine tram

Price: R680 (~$37)

Why it’s great: Award-winning wine and beautiful views

franschhoek wine tram

My husband and I did this for our anniversary and absolutely loved it. You’re driven from Cape Town to Franschhoek, a town with 300 years of history in winemaking.

There, you’ll hop on the old tram, which takes you past stunning rolling hills and stops at the area’s most popular wine estates.

Depending on how slow you like to take it, you’ll be able to do tastings at three to seven estates – we did three, languidly, but I know friends who’ve sprinted through all seven and had a very good time of it! The wine is some of the best you’ll find in the world, and the charcuterie boards are made to match. In other words, it’s a wine-lovers paradise and the perfect day trip.

Read more about the Franschhoek wine tram and our experience of it .

Or check timetables and prices for the tram !

Constantia wine tour

Price: R292 (~$16) plus wine tastings

Why it’s great: Brilliant wines, lovely wine estates, and easy transportation

Eagles Nest wine estate

Speaking of wine! If you want to go vineyard-hopping but don’t have the time or will to do a whole day tour out of the city, no worries. We have wine estates right at the foot of Table Mountain in the leafy suburb of Constantia.

A brilliant, cheap option is to take the purple line of the hop-on-hop-off tour. This line stops at some of the best wine estates in the region, and it’s cheaper than Ubering from one estate to the next – at least if you’re wanting to explore a few.

Do some wine tastings, share a charcuterie board, and explore the centuries-old vineyards. It’s one of us locals favorite Saturday activities (particularly in summer) and a great way to experience the laid-back, somewhat boozy Cape Town lifestyle.

Read more about wine tasting in Constantia or check ticket prices and timetables for the hop-on-hop-off !

Cape Malay cooking class

Price: R600 (~$36)

Why it’s great: You’ll learn to cook fantastic local dishes and learn more about Cape Town’s food culture

cape malay cooking class

The Cape Malay cooking class is a really wonderful way to learn more about Cape Malay culture – a culture unique to Cape Town – through cooking. Faldela is an excellent chef and teacher and shows you how to make some of her community’s most iconic dishes, including samosas and curry.

In the 3-hour experience, you’ll cook in her home kitchen in Bo Kaap, and then share the meal together. It’s ideal for those who like to experience a culture through their food – particularly since it’s strangely hard to find a restaurant in Cape Town that does Cape Malay food.

Just note that the meals are heavy and involve a fair bit of oil, so it’s not for everyone. Dietary restrictions can be accommodated, though, as long as you let her know beforehand!

Check prices and times for Faldela’s Cape Malay cooking class !

Cape Town food tour

Price: R1,550 (~$90)

Why it’s great: Food and alcohol tastings, fun walking tour and a knowledgeable guide

Guided food tours are a really great way to be introduced to Cape Town food culture, try some of our best and most unique dishes, and explore the city center.

If you’re spending a month in Cape Town, I’d recommend giving this a skip and exploring on your own, because you’ve got time to make mistakes and get some hot local tips! But for shorter trips, this food tour is really perfect. In one half day, you’ll learn so much, with a knowledgeable local guide and an enthusiastic walking group.

This tour also includes four alcohol tastings, which is great, as Cape Town has some truly fantastic small-batch beers, gins, wines, and brandies!

Check prices and times for the food tour !

Cultural & historic tours in Cape Town

If you’d like to learn more about Cape Town and South Africa’s history, these tours are the perfect place to start. There are only two on the list, but I’d count the food tour and the ecooking class above as cultural tours too!

Robben Island tour

Price: R800 (~$48)

Why it’s great: Unique opportunity to learn about our history of Apartheid and Nelson Mandela’s long imprisonment

If you want to learn more about Cape Town and South Africa’s history, Robben Island is the best place to start. This island off the coast of Cape Town is where Nelson Mandela spent 18 years of his 27-year imprisonment during Apartheid .

This trip includes a ferry to the island and a tour of the old prison – given by one of the old inmates, who talks about life during apartheid and on Robben Island during those long years. It is a difficult, important tour.

Eighteen of the twenty-seven plus years that Nelson Mandela spent incarcerated were on Robben Island, which was a maximum-security prison. Robben Island has now been transformed into a museum. A visit to the museum will give visitors an idea of how isolated it was, and the challenges it posed to the family of those serving time in going to visit. But it also tells the story of resilience and survival where the prisoners forged bonds, fought the authorities for better conditions and organised themselves teaching each other sports, games and school. As Mandela said it is also a “celebration of the human spirit”. Razia Saleh, Head of Archive and Research at the Nelson Mandela Foundation

To learn more about our history of Apartheid, you can also visit the Apartheid Museum and the District Six Museum .

Check prices for the Robben Island Tour .

Free historic walking tour

Price: Free

Why it’s great: The local guides are really passionate about Cape Town’s history, and make it engaging and consistently interesting

Bo Kaap neighbourhood Cape Town

One of the absolute best free things to do in Cape Town , these walking tours offer a look at Cape Town’s history and culture. They run on tips alone, and you’ll learn so much about the city from a local guide. Very fun and interesting, it’s an ideal option for anyone on a budget, and locals often take part to learn more about our city! Bookings are not required, you just pitch up at the meeting point.

They currently have three tours running at different times – the Historic City Tour, the Apartheid to Freedom Tour, and the Bo Kaap Tour. All come highly recommended!

Explore Cape Town’s best tourist attractions & activities

There you have it, the best tours in Cape Town – from a local perspective. I’ve done most of these while exploring my city, and the ones I haven’t are tours covering places and activities I loved exploring in a more private capacity!

Which tour or adventure is best really depends on your traveling style and interests. As a general starting point, I’d recommend the sightseeing bus and a trip up Table Mountain – on foot or via cable car.

5 of the Best Sightseeing Tours in Cape Town

Cape Town is the perfect blend of modern big city life and natural wonders, from Table Mountain to dense forests and rolling vineyards. Here are five ways to explore:

cape town sewer tour

(Photo: getyourguide.com)

Cape Town manages to mix a modern metropolis with breathtaking natural beauty like few other big cities. Cosmopolitan cafes, cutting-edge art and culture and award-winning food and drink live in harmony with beautiful beaches, the staggering Table Mountain, one of the New 7 Wonders of the world, dense forests and sprawling vineyards. Rather than try to navigate its eclectic offerings alone, it pays to get a sightseeing tour to show you around. Here are five of the best in Cape Town:

2 Oceans Helicopter Flight with Boat Tour Ticket

For an overview – quite literally – of the South African capital, this helicopter flight takes some beating. As the name suggests, you get two oceans for the price of one, seeing the Atlantic Ocean on one side of the Cape Peninsula and continue till you get to the Indian Ocean on the other side. This is also the best way to see how Cape Town edges against the natural wonder of Table Mountain, with civilisation abruptly giving way to nature. You’ll also see Cape Town Stadium, one of the venues of the 2010 World Cup. Then, travel down the coast of the Atlantic Ocean, passing Signal Hill, Camps Bay, and Clifton Beach along the way. From €242.74.

Half-Day Tour Through Cape Town’s Townships

cape town sewer tour

It’s worth remembering before you even set foot in a township that these are a stark reminder of South Africa’s apartheid; that is, they were undeveloped urban areas reserved for non-whites. It’s also worth remembering that many people still see them as an example of segregation, with Cape Town’s richer town centre population largely white. Armed with this understanding, and not just the want of an Instagram pic in a township, this tour does a great job at delving deeper into the divisions in the city’s past and present, with a local guide giving a rich background on District Six, the area best known for its forceful removal of over 60,000 inhabitants during the 1970s Apartheid regime. From €40.21.

From Cape Town: Franschhoek Wine Tram Hop-on Hop-off

The wine industry is a huge part of Cape Town and the surrounding area’s economy. This tram is a wonderfully quirky sightseeing opportunity, rolling through the picturesque Franschhoek Valley and its rolling vineyards, breath-taking scenery, warm hospitality, world-class cuisine, fine wines and a 300-year history. There are two tram lines to choose from, both taking in a number of wine estates, with the tram or tram bus passing every 60 minutes. All you have to do is hop off, try some wines, from everything from boutique to marquee estates, and then at the end of the day get taken back to Cape Town by bus. From €34.28.

Guided Hike to the Top of Table Mountain

cape town sewer tour

It’s hard not to notice Table Mountain, the imposing backdrop to Cape Town. But don’t just look at it while you down another glass crisp glass of Chardonnay – climbing it not only gives the best view in town (including a helicopter, in our opinion) but it is also an outdoor adventure right on the city’s doorstep. The India Venster hike is challenging, with rugged terrain and technical challenges, but for anyone reasonably fit this makes for an incredible half-day out. From the majestic fountain ledge you’ll get a spectacular view of Camps Bay and Clifton and at the top there is something even more exciting – a cable car, so you don’t have to walk all the way back. From € 85.82.

Cape Town City Tour

An excellent way to see the sights of the city, this tour speeds between key sites in a private vehicle—an ideal way to save time and see more of Cape Town. The itinerary of this day-long tour takes in Table Mountain, Bo-Kaap, Camps Bay, and Signal Hill. It’s all organised to minimise hassle – so perfect for anyone short of time – with free WiFi and bottled water onboard to keep you connected and hydrated. From €60.08.

The City progresses to the next step of a R470 million bulk sewer upgrade

The City of Cape Town has broken ground on the next phase of the R470 million Milnerton bulk sewer upgrade, with the construction of an entirely new pipeline scheduled for completion by 2025.

This endeavour involves the implementation of innovative micro-tunnelling technology to establish a novel bulk sewer in Montague Gardens. Additionally, the City will extend and integrate the Edgemead and Century City bulk sewers into this new infrastructure.

Also read: CoCT to complete SA’s largest sewer upgrade by 2025

Upon the completion of nearly 4 kilometres of new bulk sewerage by early 2025, the City will redirect sewage flow through this fresh conduit while simultaneously rehabilitating the existing bulk sewer beneath Montague Drive, Montague Gardens.

Since the existing pipeline runs beneath the busy Montague Drive roadway, the pipeline restoration process will rely on trenchless technology. A mechanised crawler will initially assess the condition of the pipes to determine the most effective repair method, and all repair work will take place underground, minimising surface-level disruptions for residents and traffic.

Mayor Geordin Hill-Lewis expressed his enthusiasm about breaking ground on yet another significant improvement project during his tenure:

‘It was a joy to break ground on yet another major upgrade project of this administration. The existing bulk sewer under Montague Drive is operating at full capacity, with an upgrade needed to accommodate future growth in this part of the city. That is why we are constructing an entirely new bulk sewer, which will operate alongside the rehabilitated existing pipeline.

Scheduled for completion in 2025, the same year as the culmination of the expansive Cape Flats Bulk Sewer Rehabilitation – the largest of its kind in South Africa – this endeavour is designed to future-proof the city. By doing so, Cape Town is positioning itself to become an even more desirable place to reside as its metropolitan area continues to develop.

cape town sewer tour

Mayor Hill-Lewis stated, ‘When we talk of our long-term vision of building a city of hope for all, it really comes down to projects like this, which bring about better living conditions for residents,’ said Mayor Geordin Hill-Lewis.

Over the following three years, the City will allocate a substantial R1.4 billion towards significant bulk sewer upgrades for the Cape Flats, Philippi, Milnerton and Gordon’s Bay lines. In a testament to its commitment to infrastructure development, Cape Town has escalated its investment in water and sanitation infrastructure by an impressive 223% over three years, with funding increasing from R2.3 billion in 2022/23 to R7.8 billion in 2025/26.

Beyond the bulk sewer upgrades, other notable achievements include a capital expenditure of R8.6 billion for Wastewater Treatment Works (WWTW) upgrades over three years, R1.3 billion allocated for sewer spill responsiveness, encompassing proactive jet-cleaning of 200 kilometres of sewer lines annually, and a quadrupling of pipe replacement efforts from 25 kilometres in 2021/22 to an impressive 100 kilometres annually, constituting a total investment of R850 million over three years.

cape town sewer tour

Mayor Hill-Lewis underlined the broader impact of this infrastructure surge, emphasising, ‘Aside from improving basic services and personal and community dignity, the scale of Cape Town’s R43bn three-year infrastructure pipeline – bigger than Joburg and Durban combined – will create an estimated 135 000 jobs in the city over three years,’ said Mayor Hill-Lewis.

Tackling lagoon pollution through infrastructure enhancements, Councillor Zahid Badroodien, Mayoral Committee Member for Water and Sanitation, detailed the Milnerton bulk sewer upgrade’s comprehensive scope, which incorporates the incorporation of a sandtrap and screening facility at the Koeberg Road Pump Station. This strategic addition aims to enhance operational efficiency and diminish breakdowns arising from foreign objects infiltrating the pump station.

Furthermore, a new 300-metre-long bulk outfall sewer, boasting a diameter of 1,350mm, is slated for construction at the Koeberg Road Pump Station. This conduit will efficiently accommodate the combined flow from both the existing and new Montague Gardens bulk sewers. These enhancements at the Koeberg Road Pump Station are projected to curtail sewer spills into the Diep River, thus mitigating environmental strain.

In line with its overarching objective of revitalising the environmental health of the Milnerton Lagoon, the City plans to execute a combination of infrastructure upgrades and sediment dredging to alleviate pollution accumulation within the water body.

Adjacent to the Milnerton Bulk Sewer Upgrade, the area is poised to witness other significant infrastructure ventures, including a R5.2 billion capacity-doubling upgrade at the Potsdam Wastewater Works, a notable project ranking as the Western Cape’s second-largest infrastructure initiative. Additionally, the R118 million Koeberg Pump Station Upgrade forms a pivotal part of this regional transformation.

Cape Town’s commitment to sewer pipe replacement is also noteworthy. Exceeding its goal of doubling sewer pipe replacement from 25 kilometres to 50 kilometres for the 2022–23 fiscal year, the City managed to replace a total of 55 kilometres of the pipeline by the conclusion of June 2023. Building on this success, the annual target for pipe replacement will be elevated once more to an impressive 100 kilometres per year, commencing from the 2023/24 period, with a cumulative investment of R850 million spanning three years.

Sewer pipe replacement is an integral aspect of the City’s strategy to gradually reduce sewer spills over time. This approach is supported by substantial efforts, including major bulk sewer upgrades, proactive sewer line cleaning initiatives, dedicated teams for sewer spill responses and the implementation of digital telemetry systems for early alerts regarding sewer spill incidents.

These comprehensive interventions have precipitated a downward trend of approximately 30% in reported sewer spills within Cape Town over the last two years, as evidenced by preliminary data. To enhance monitoring and coordination of sewer spill responsiveness progress, the City is rolling out a reactive incident management system (RIMA), digitising the coordination process.

Noteworthy sewer pipe replacement projects that contributed to the 50-kilometre target for the 2022–23 fiscal year include a major bulk rehabilitation project for the Cape Flats Bulk Sewer Rehabilitation, 22 successfully completed projects and 14 ongoing projects across various locations within the metropolitan area.

Looking forward, the City is gearing up to tackle an ambitious target of replacing 100 kilometres of sewer pipe in the 2023–24 period, with plans encompassing an array of locations.

This strategic initiative encompasses localities such as Brackenfell Industrial, Stikland Industrial, Kraaifontein Industrial, Bellville, Welgemoed, Bergvliet, Muizenberg, Lotus River, Constantia, Tokai, Wynberg, Broadlands, Strand, Kuils River, Mission Grounds/Sir Lowry’s Pass, Tuscany Glen, Eerstriver South, Kraaifontein, Eversdal and many more.

• Scenic natural beauty of Table Mountain and Lions Head • Cultural heritage of Bo Kaap and the Castle of Good Hope • Urban gardens at Company’s Garden • Moving history and insights from Robben Island

Bo-Kaap District

Downtown, in what is known as the CBD, you’ll delve into Cape Town’s intricate history and culture, visiting the colourful Bo Kaap neighbourhood, the Castle of Good Hope military fort and the green heart of the city, Company’s Garden.

A ferry ride to the well-known and infamous Robben Island, where former President Nelson Mandela spent 18 of his 27 prison years, is a must for all Cape Town visitors. The emotional and significant experience offers a glimpse into the past and present of South African society that won’t soon be forgotten.

End the day with quiet sundowners from Signal Hill, where the famous African sunset shines over the Atlantic Seaboard and the city’s beaches and coastline are viewed in all their glory.

Table Mountain One of the new seven natural wonders of the world, Table Mountain forms the iconic backdrop to the city of Cape Town and offers spectacular views from the top. The 1,067 metre ascent is made in the aerial cableway, which rotates 360º to give jaw-dropping views of the city and the Atlantic Ocean. Once at the top, you can enjoy three easy walks and numerous viewing decks, souvenir shops, and a restaurant and coffee shop.

Bo Kaap/Cape Malay Quarter This colourful city neighbourhood has a rich cultural, religious and architectural heritage, with strong links to Muslim traditions and culture. It is one of Cape Town’s oldest residential areas, originating when the Cape Malay were shipped into the Cape Colony as skilled artisan slaves. Bo Kaap is also home to the oldest mosque in South Africa, the Auwal Mosque, established in 1798, as well as notable shops and cafes serving delicacies including koesisters and bobotie.

Company’s Garden This gorgeous green lung of the city is the oldest garden in the country, established in 1652 by Dutch settlers. Constantly abuzz park activity, the Company’s Garden is a well-known place for a picnic or afternoon stroll, and boasts a beautiful rose garden, Japanese garden, fish pond and bird aviary. It is flanked by important landmarks, including Parliament, the Iziko South African Museum and Planetarium, the South African National Gallery and other historical buildings.

Castle of Good Hope Built as a maritime replenishment station in the late 1600s by the Dutch East India Company, this is the oldest surviving building in Cape Town. It is a fort rather than a castle and has a distinct star shape. The Castle Military Museum highlights military history with an impressive sword collection, while its William Fehr Collection of historical paintings and period furniture have special relevance to the Cape. The Key Ceremony is performed during weekdays, followed by the firing of the Signal Cannon. Horse and carriage rides are also available.

Green Market Square In the heart of the central business district lies this open-air shopping mecca, set on a cobbled square and abuzz with local traders and eccentric characters. Here you can purchase souvenirs and curios, local art, crafts, fabrics and artefacts from almost every African country.

Robben Island One of Cape Town’s most emotionally stirring attractions is Robben Island, whose most famous resident – former President Nelson Mandela – spent much of his 27-year prison sentence. The island was declared a UNESCO World Heritage site in 1999 and is now a museum and conservation area. After a ferry trip from the V&A Waterfront, a bus tour brings visitors around the island before they embark on a guided walking tour of the prison with a former inmate, and visit Nelson Mandela’s former prison cell.

About Tunnel Tour

Everybody takes a tour of the city, but have you ever taken one underground? The tunnel tour in Cape Town starts at the Castle where you will be told a bit more and led to the foot of Table Mountain, given a torch and a pair of wellies before descending into the darkness through a cast iron manhole.

Excitement and adrenaline kick in as you climb down into another world below the City of Cape Town. A guide will give you more information about the tunnel and the history behind it, making this tour ever more thrilling. The tunnel was previously an open river which ran from the mountain to the sea, supplying the early settlers with fresh water.

Your underground adventure is ventilated and clean with natural light leaking in, making it possible to take those memory holding photos. You will need to be reasonably fit to complete the tour and if you are heavily claustrophobic then please speak to the tour guide before embarking.

Cape Town, one of the world’s most beautiful cities, is located near Table Bay on the northern extremity of the stunning Cape Peninsula. This morning we will fetch you from your Cape Town hotel and spend the day taking you to some of the peninsula’s top birding sites. We will try to find a lot of the localized endemics (of which there are many), and we will also see flamingo, pelican, and other waterbird spectacles, plus we will enjoy fantastic botanical garden birding in idyllic surroundings.

Cape Peninsula birding tours

We start the day at the famous Kirstenbosch National Botanical Garden. Here it is quite easy to find some important fynbos endemics such as  Orange-breasted Sunbird  and  Cape Sugarbird . Other fine birds like  Cape Spurfowl ,  Lemon Dove , Southern Boubou ,  Spotted Eagle-Owl , Cape Canary ,  Forest Canary ,  Cape Robin-Chat ,  Karoo Prinia ,  Swee Waxbill , and a whole host of other excellent birds abound.  European Honey Buzzard , a very rare bird in South Africa, is actually regular on the slopes of Table Mountain in late summer. Many other raptors are possible in the garden and at other sites we will visit during our peninsula day trip, including Verreaux’s Eagle , Black and Rufous-breasted Sparrowhawks , African Goshawk , Jackal Buzzard ,  Forest Buzzard  (endemic), Rock Kestrel , Peregrine Falcon , and others.

Cape Peninsula birding tours

The Constantia greenbelts near Kirstenbosch can often prove more productive for a number of forest species, such as Rufous-breasted and Black Sparrowhawks , African Olive Pigeon , African Paradise Flycatcher , Amethyst Sunbird , Cape Siskin , and the introduced Common Chaffinch . African Wood Owl is possible; however, it would require a really early start or a late finish. An additional day greatly increases the chances of finding difficult raptor species such as sparrowhawks/goshawks and  Forest Buzzard .

After an early lunch we will visit a wetland, either Rondevlei Nature Reserve or Strandfontein Bird Sanctuary. Here we should find wildfowl such as Cape Teal ,  Cape Shoveler , Maccoa Duck, South African Shelduck ,  and many others. There is a multitude of waterbird species to keep us entertained, including  Greater Flamingo ,  African Spoonbill , Great White Pelican ,  African Oystercatcher ,  African Swamphen , Water and Spotted Thick-knees , various shorebirds,  African Marsh Harrier , a host of heron species, Little Rush , African Reed , and Lesser Swamp Warblers , and many more. Less-commonly seen species include Little Bittern (summer), Malachite Kingfisher , African Snipe , and Hottentot Teal . In the surrounding fynbos we may find Cape Grassbird , Grey-backed Cisticola , Yellow Bishop , Fiscal Flycatcher , and Bokmakierie , as well as Red-faced and White-backed Mousebirds .

We will visit a colony of  African Penguins (one of only three mainland colonies of this southern African endemic), and nearby we should be able to find all four of South Africa’s marine Cormorants ( Bank , Cape , Crowned , and White-breasted ) and good numbers of the beautiful African Oystercatcher .

Cape Peninsula birding tours

Although not typically included on a birding day tour, for those who are interested we may then carry on farther down the peninsula to the spectacular southwestern-most tip of the African continent, Cape Point. From this “end of the world” spot we should see Cape Gannet , a large breeding colony of Cape Cormorant , African Oystercatcher , and quite a number of interesting terrestrial birds – Cape Grassbird , Cape Siskin , Bokmakierie , and Cape Bulbul are exciting possibilities. When conditions are right a sea watch can produce decent numbers of seabirds, including Cory’s , Great , and Sooty Shearwaters , Shy and Black-browed Albatrosses , White-chinned Petrel , and jaegers.

The guide for day trips is allocated only after you have booked, as all of them are run as private trips. But we always use the country’s top birding guides.

Highlights: African Oystercatcher, Cape Spurfowl, Spotted Eagle-Owl, Olive Woodpecker, Cape Bulbul, Cape Grassbird, Cape Batis, Orange-breasted Sunbird, Swee Waxbill, Cape Siskin, Forest Canary

Today I showed Danny from the UK around some of the Cape Peninsula’s top birding spots.

After fetching Danny in Rondebosch we made our way to the greenbelts around Constantia to target a few forest species. The morning started off relatively slow but soon picked up once it started to warm up. Some of the better birds seen included Common Buzzard , Black Saw-wing , Forest and Cape Canaries , Common Chaffinch , Cape Bulbul , Swee Waxbill , Southern Double-collared Sunbird , and Olive Woodpecker .

We then moved round the corner to Cecilia Forest, where despite the hot conditions no raptors were using the thermals. We thus focused on some of the fynbos and forest species and soon came across Cape Siskin , Cape Grassbird , Neddicky , Karoo Prinia , Cape Batis , Malachite Sunbird , and a flyover African Olive Pigeon .

Cape Peninsula birding report

Cape Grassbird

The beautiful Kirstenbosch National Botanical Garden was next on the itinerary. We made our way to a spot where a pair of Buff-spotted Flufftails had set up a territory; however; despite we were waiting in silence for an hour the birds did not put in an appearance. A friend let me know he saw them later that evening; right place at the right time, I guess! We wandered around the well-maintained garden for a couple of hours and came across Sombre Greenbul , Olive Thrush , Cape Robin-Chat , Bar-throated Apalis , African Paradise and African Dusky Flycatchers , Orange-breasted Sunbird , and a Spotted Eagle-Owl at its day roost.

After a quick lunch we moved to the Strandfontein Sewage Works, to add a few waterbirds to the list. We soon came across a number of new waterfowl species for the day, including Yellow-billed Duck , Cape Shoveler , Cape Teal , Red-billed Teal , South African Shelduck , and Spur-winged Goose . Waders were also in abundance and included Common Greenshank , Marsh Sandpiper , Bar-tailed Godwit , Little Stint , Ruff , and Three-banded Plover , as well as a few African Oystercatchers . Exploring the many pans further yielded Lesser and Greater Flamingos , Glossy Ibis , Great White Pelican , White Stork , and Intermediate and Little Egrets , as well as both Hartlaub’s and Grey-headed Gulls. A number of species were seen in the adjoining bush, such as Cape Spurfowl , Spotted and Water Thick-knees , African Marsh Harrier , White-necked Raven , Cape Longclaw , and Black-shouldered Kite . The farmland near the sewage works provided Capped Wheatear , Red-capped Lark , and African Pipit .

Cape Peninsula birding report

To finish off the day we moved to Rondevlei on the western side of Zeekoevlei. This little reserve produced a few new species for the day. including Caspian Tern , Wood Sandpiper , Pied and Malachite Kingfishers , and a brief sighting of Little Bittern .

We finished a thoroughly enjoyable day with a species count of 99.

‘I am writing to you to send a formal review of our birding day tour with Dominic Rollinson on May 18, 2021.  Matt and I are not bird experts by any means but we do enjoy watching and tracking the various species of birds back home here in the Houston, Texas area. It is very relaxing and very enjoyable learning new things about all of the beautiful feathered friends out there!  While planning our South African adventures last year, we certainly knew that we had to spend one day learning about and hopefully seeing many of the beautiful birds of South Africa.

Dominic Rollinson, our truly knowledgeable and awesome birding guide provided Matt and I with a truly unique and genuinely wonderful birding experience!

Our day started around 7:30 am with a prompt arrival for pick up at our hotel in Camps Bay.  We headed on to our first destination for the day, Rondevlei Nature Reserve and Cape Flats wetlands.  Here we were able to observe various birds such as the Southern Double-collared Sunbird, Karoo Prinia, Levaillant’s Cisticola, and Bar-throated Apalis.  There were other birds around the various waterways including the Blacksmith Lapwing, Cape Shoveler, and Little Swifts.  The highlight was seeing our first sunbird!

The next stop on our day adventure was the Strandfontein sewage works.  Here we were able to see Blacksmith Lapwing, Hartlaub’s Gull, Cape Spurfowl, Cape and Reed Cormorants, Black-necked Grebe, Hadeda and African Sacred Ibis, Egyptian Goose, and many other species of various water fowl.

Our next stopping point was the peaceful, beautiful and extraordinary Kirstenbosch National Botanical Gardens!  It is here that we saw an abundance of feathered friends!  We saw Cape Bulbul, Forest Canary, Cape Sugarbird, Southern Double-collared Sunbirds galore, feeding on the beautiful candelabra aloe flowers, and even a beautiful male Malachite Sunbird!  Other sightings included the Sombre Greenbul, Common Waxbill, Cape Robin-Chat, Olive Thrush and Cape White-eye.

Our final stop of the day was at almost sunset overlooking the coast in Clifton.  Here we caught a glimpse of African Oystercatchers, Bank and Crowned Cormorants, and the beautiful sunset to cap off a really special day!

Dominic Rollinson provided us with in-depth knowledge and a greater understanding of the various birds, wildlife and ecosystems that make up the areas in/around Cape Town and South Africa!  Our expectations for the day were not only met but greatly exceeded with Dominic guiding us along the way!   Matt and I truly had a blast and would highly recommend Dominic Rollinson as a birding guide!

Thank you,’

Matt and Chris
