Tourism Slogans for Every Country in the World: From Catchy to Cringeworthy

You guys — I have gone down a rabbit hole. 🤦🏻‍♀️ I started searching for country tourism slogans to include on a Country Quick Facts Infographic I am creating for my newly-designed country category pages (check out the test run for Colombia here !).

Before I knew it, I had compiled a comprehensive list of the tourism slogans for every country and territory in the world! So I decided to rank the Top 20 Best and Worst tourism slogans just for kicks. And I also threw in a few tourism logos while I was at it!

It was interesting to see what catchy (or not-so-catchy) taglines countries have come up with to lure tourists, especially since (at the time of this writing) US citizens are banned from all but a handful of these countries due to the coronavirus.

Some countries opted for the easy go-to of alliteration (“Brilliant Barbados”; “Beautiful Burundi”; “Pristine Paradise Palau”; “Timeless Tuvalu”) or assonance (“Epic Estonia”; “Incredible India”). Other countries got a little more creative (Djibouti: “Djibeauty”; Slovenia: “I feel sLOVEnia”; Ukraine: “It’s all about U”).

A few countries decided to make some bold claims (“Dominican Republic Has It All”; “All You Need Is Ecuador”; Honduras: “Everything Is Here”), while smaller, lesser-known countries opted to just tell you where they are located (Andorra: “The Pyrenean Country”; Bosnia & Herzegovina: “The Heart of SE Europe”).

Without further ado, here is my ranking (in alphabetical order) of the Top 20 Best and Worst Country Tourism Slogans. Let’s get the cringeworthy taglines out of the way first before moving onto the catchy ones….

100+ Fun Facts About Canada for Travelers

' src=

Paul Heller has been a lifelong avid traveler and language learner and teacher, Even as a child, he told Santa Claus that he wanted to visit all the children worldwide. At seven years old, Paul wanted to retire to Mexico. At eight, he memorized the name, capital, location, and some facts about every country worldwide. At twelve, he found a book "Lonely Planet: Southeast Asia on a Shoestring" and started developing his own itinerary for a future round-the-world trip. He remained obsessed with travel; after getting a Master’s Degree in Public Administration from the University of Southern California and working as an administrator, He spent his vacations going to different countries around the globe studying language, touring, and volunteering. In 1994, he quit his job and lived in Russia as a volunteer English instructor. He discovered that he loved teaching languages. In 2004, he decided to make a living out of his travels and founded a community of people who love to travel just like him. He developed 5 three-hour classes about living and traveling long-term worldwide which he taught in over 50 adult education programs throughout the US. After his parents passed, he realized his dream of traveling around the world; cruising and touring some of the most remote places like the North Atlantic, Patagonia, and Oceania; and learning new languages (he knows Spanish, Italian, French, and Russian). Paul encourages everyone to learn foreign languages. He knows that it can be frustrating and slow but that anyone can learn a language if they put in the work and, most importantly, learning a language is well worth the time and effort because it opens up a whole new set of people, ideas, and cultures. He is currently spending the next chapter of his life in Mérida, México. He is excited about using this blog and his classes and workshops to inspire and equip fellow Fifty Plus Nomads with the language, cultural, and psychological skills necessary to be successful and happy long-term travelers and expats over 50.

The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly: A Review of Tourism Slogans from Around the World

Tourism slogans are short, memorable phrases that promote destinations and attract visitors. They are an important marketing tool for destinations, as they help to establish brand identity and differentiate a location from its competitors. A great tourism slogan should capture the essence of a destination and inspire travelers to visit and experience all that it has to offer. It should also have an emotional pull, evoking feelings of excitement, adventure, relaxation, or whatever other emotions are appropriate for the destination.  In this blog post, we will explore the history and significance of tourism slogans and showcase a collection of the best and worst ones from around the world.  We will also provide some tips for creating a great tourism slogan.

History of Tourism Slogans

The use of tourism slogans dates back to the early 20th century when destinations began to market themselves more aggressively to attract visitors. One of the first known tourism slogans was “See America First,” which the United States government used in the 1920s to encourage Americans to explore their own country before traveling abroad.

In the following decades, more destinations worldwide began to adopt their own tourism slogans to stand out in a crowded market. For example, the British government used ” Visit Britain ” in the 1950s to promote the country as a travel destination.

As tourism has evolved over the years, so have the slogans used to promote it. In the 1960s and 1970s, tourism slogans often focused on a destination’s natural beauty and outdoor recreational opportunities. For example, “New Zealand: 100% Pure” has been used by the New Zealand government since 1999 to promote the country’s unspoiled landscape and clean environment.

In recent years, tourism slogans have become more diverse and creative, with destinations using catchy and memorable phrases to appeal to travelers’ emotions and sense of adventure. Some examples of iconic tourism slogans from recent years include “Australia: Where the Bloody Hell Are You?” and “Spain: Passion for Life.”

The history of tourism slogans reflects the evolution of the travel industry and travelers’ changing priorities and interests. Whether it’s showcasing a destination’s natural beauty, cultural attractions, or unique character, the best tourism slogans capture the essence of a place and inspire travelers to visit and experience it for themselves.

Creating a great tourism slogan requires a combination of creativity, strategy, and cultural sensitivity. Here are a few tips for crafting a compelling and memorable tourism slogan:

  • Keep it simple: A great tourism slogan should be short, catchy, and easy to remember. Avoid using too many words or complex language.
  • Make it memorable: A memorable slogan is more likely to stick in people’s minds and encourage them to visit a destination. Use catchy phrases, wordplay, or alliteration to make your slogan stand out.
  • Reflect the destination’s unique character: A great tourism slogan should capture the essence of a destination and what makes it special. Think about the destination’s culture, history, attractions, and natural beauty, and use these elements to create a slogan that reflects its unique character.
  • Be culturally sensitive: It’s important to be mindful of cultural differences and sensitivities when crafting a tourism slogan. Avoid using stereotypes or promoting a one-dimensional image of a destination.
  • Test it out: Before finalizing a slogan, it’s a good idea to test it out with a focus group or through market research to see how it resonates with potential visitors. This will help ensure that the slogan is effective and well-received.

Tourism slogans are a powerful marketing tool that can help destinations attract visitors and establish brand identity. The best tourism slogans capture the essence of a destination and inspire travelers to visit and experience all that it has to offer. However, not all tourism slogans are successful, and some have even been criticized for being tone-deaf, offensive, or simply poorly executed. As this post has demonstrated, it’s important for destinations to be mindful and culturally sensitive when crafting a tourism slogan and to test it out with potential visitors to ensure that it resonates with them. Whether you’re looking for the best or the worst tourism slogans, there are plenty of examples from around the world to inspire your next adventure.

Tourism slogans are meant to sum up the appeal of destinations in just a few words, the same way a brand’s tag line does. Ideally, they are short enough to go on a hat or water   bottle, but powerful enough to convey a strong emotional connection or make a pitch for why you should visit. Sometimes these destinations spend the kind of money a big brand would in order to settle on a slogan, bringing in an agency and going through tests and focus groups. All for just a few words that, as often as not, are either perplexing or just wrong.

tourism slogans Latin America

Latin America has a long history with bad tourism slogans, stemming in part from sentiments that don’t always translate well. What may sound melodious and attractive in Spanish may sound weird or off-putting in English.

The best example of this was Panama’s from the late ’00s: “Panama – it will never leave you.” The English travel press had a heyday when that was announced, with one headline saying, “Panama Picks A Tourism Slogan Reminiscent Of Childhood Trauma, STDs.” People joked that maybe it referred to a case of dengue fever or food poisoning that stuck around after you had gone home.

Thankfully, that slogan did leave us. So did the one “It’s all here in Honduras.” After the country recorded the highest murder rate in the world soon after, people started wondering what that “all” actually was.

This is not a problem unique to Latin America, of course. The tourism slogan for Morocco has been “Much Mor,” for Algeria “Tourism for Everyone,” and for Ukraine, “It’s all about U.” Apparently many destinations think they have a lock on beauty. There’s “Beautiful Bangladesh,” “It’s Beautiful – It’s Pakistan,” and “Beauty has an address” in Oman. Hey, you should “Visit Armenia – it is beautiful.”

Sometimes these tourism slogans are front and center on all the country’s printed materials, promo swag, and the website. Other times they’re buried in some government report and seldom seen again. From what we could find though (with the last update in August of 2023), here are the current ones, from north to south on the map. Which is your favorite?

Mexico – A World of Its Own  We are never 100% sure what the current tourism slogan for Mexico is because the president dissolved the tourism bureau soon after he took office and the website has been a mess ever since. The slogan could just be, “We put our whole tourism budget into the Maya Train project,” but that’s not very catchy.

With the country not attending any trade shows for years, we’re not sure what goes on the booth signs these days, but from what we can find, “Mexico – A World of Its Own” has replaced the previous one, “Think of Mexico.” Prior to that, it was “Mexico – Live it to believe it” for years.

This current one works better than the two previous one. People already “think of Mexico” a lot but they don’t always think positive thoughts. On the other hand, the country has a huge variety of landscapes, climates, cultures, music, food, and handicrafts and this slogan reflects that well.

Central American Tourism Slogans

Guatemala – Heart of the Mayan World Although there’s more to Guatemala than Tikal, this is a great slogan for a lot of reasons and that’s probably why they’ve stuck with it for so long. It’s been in place since before we started this publication in 2007, so no annual brochure reprinting required.

heart of the Mayan world travel slogan

Belize – A Curious Place Belize has been through a fair number of slogans, from the cringe-worthy “Belize it!” to the cryptic “Discover how to be” to “Mother Nature’s best-kept secret.” I guess they had to drop that last one when the cruise ships started spilling thousands of people onto the port dock.

This one doesn’t really say much, but perhaps that’s the goal. Something more concrete that highlighted the surf and turf aspect of Caribbean waters plus jungle/ruins would help sell the place more, but that’s the problem with slogans: they’re usually too short for that. This one, coupled with all the nice images on their website, does at least make you curious about what you could discover there.

Honduras – More Than a Destination The last time I was in contact with the U.S. office of Honduras, the guy had an AOL e-mail address and the last time I got a press release from them was a decade ago, so tourism marketing and publicity are clearly not high on the priority list. Back when they were using a PR firm I got slapped on the wrist for mentioning the tourism slogan that was on my baseball hat from a previous trip in my article: ‘One small country, three big worlds.’ That was a great slogan because it nicely summed up the answer to the inevitable question, ‘Why go there?’ You go because you’ve got one of the most notable Mayan ruins sites, nature preserves, and the coral-fringed islands. So the slogan actually meant something.

Alas, I had to edit the article because the PR agency had spent tons of money on focus groups and reports to come up with a brand new slogan: ‘The Central America you know – the country you’ll love.’ What does that even mean? About as much as “more than a destination.” Couldn’t this apply to virtually anywhere? It’ll change again soon though I’m sure. Past ones have included such gems as “You can’t leave Honduras without really knowing Honduras” and “Everything is here.” (Everything? Really?!)

El Salvador – The 45-minute country I’m quite intrigued by this one and am not really sure what it means. I’m guessing the intent is to say you can get from one side of the country to the other in 45 minutes, that it won’t take you long to tour around, but is that a good thing? What I think of instead when I see that is “There’s only enough here to occupy you for 45 minutes, then you can leave.”

I’ve never been to El Salvador and I can’t say that slogan moves the place higher up on my priority list for the future.

Nicaragua Unica… Original! Nicaragua has stuck with some version of this slogan for at least eight years now, though I’m not really sure how effective it is. It’s hard to point to much in Nicaragua that you can’t find in at least one neighboring country. Nice beaches, check. Historic colonial city, check. Steaming volcano, check. Cigars and rum, check. They’ve got conical volcanic mountains sticking out of a massive lake though, so there’s that at least.

The description just below the slogan on their website lays it out better with more wording to work with. “In the heart of Central America, Nicaragua truly deserves the descriptive nickname of ‘The Land of Lakes and Volcanoes.’ Visitors to Nicaragua are able to enjoy the natural beauty of dozens of volcanoes, rivers, and lakes, as well as two oceans.”

Essential Costa Rica This one has been in place for quite a few years, so they must like it. The slogan seems generic and non-descriptive to me: you could slap “essential” in front of any country name since it doesn’t bring up any visual connotation. But it is usually paired with visuals like volcanoes, rainforest, adventures, or beaches.

It’s probably not a bad strategy to let the images and video do the talking for Costa Rica instead of the words. Their brand image has made it one of the most popular places for expat real estate investments in all of Latin America.

I miss their old one though that seemed perfect: “Costa Rica – no artificial ingredients.”

See our reviews of the best Costa Rica luxury hotels .

Panama – Live for More This is certainly better than “It’ll never leave you,” though I kind of liked one of their previous ones better: “Panama Surprises.” Others have referenced nature, though that’s kind of problematic and wishful thinking. While there are some great adventure activities and nature exploration options in Panama, the country is better known for its capital city and the canal.

Perhaps “Live for More” is so generic that you can toss any destination under that banner and it still works, metropolis or rainforest.  You can live for more anywhere really though, so I’m not sure how this helps Panama’s image or makes more people want to go there.

South America Tourism Slogans

Colombia – Feel the Rhythm Colombia seems to cycle through tourism slogans faster than any country in the Americas, but most of them never make it onto the official tourism website. You see the tag lines more at trade shows and events they’re hosting, as I did with “Colombia es passion / Colombia is passion” when I was last there in 2022 for an industry conference.

Now the current one seems to be “Most Welcoming Place on Earth.” That’s their most generic slogan to date, one that 30 or 40 other countries could credibly claim, so hopefully it disappears like a hot arepa and gets replaced soon by something catchier.

Colombia once had one of the most famous tourism slogans in the world, the daring “The only risk is wanting to stay.” Back when their main goal was to battle the perception that it was a dangerous land of cocaine cartels, this slogan was highly effective and some would argue that it turned around their reputation with travelers. Now they seem to be rotating through tourism slogans that highlight one particular aspect of the country. For several years they went with “Colombia is Magic Realism,” a nod to the strange worlds of Latin America’s well-known writer: Gabriel Garcia Marquez.

A few years back, the Colombia tourism slogan was “Feel the Rhythm.” That seemed to be a reference to the music and the exuberant people who play it, which is also a nod to the person who might be the most famous living Colombian: Shakira. The land of cumbia does have more great music than most countries though, even compared to others in Latin America, so it worked. But they soon switched to a new tune and then another.

Guayana – South America Undiscovered I like this one a lot because it plays off the fact that they’re not a mass-market tourism destination and the country is full of wild places. I haven’t been there. Have you? It’s still undiscovered.

Time to Reset in Ecuador Well hey, it’s better than the previous one: “All You Need is Ecuador.” That was another one that’s so generic you could slap nearly any destination on the end. Or “love” for that matter and you’ve got a Beatles song.

The reset idea is a little different, but without visuals it falls flat. There’s no hint of what awaits you if you visit–in a country that has Andean peaks, Amazon basin jungle, cloudforests, and the Galapagos Islands.

They went a little overboard with the idea on the official site though. When I visited Ecuador.travel in August of 2023, there was just “Time to reset in Ecuador” on the page and…nothing else to click on or navigate. I went to their press page through a back door and it said, “Welcome to our blog! Read our latest posts.” And the rest of the page was empty. The navigation links at the bottom were just text, with no actual links, and there were no press materials or contacts.

Hey Ecuador, “All You Need Is…” a tech staff.

Peru – The Richest Country in the World We’re not completely sure that this is still the official tourism slogan of Peru because it only seems to appear at trade shows, not on their websites or in press releases. They are normally sloganless in those places, just using their attractive logo.

It is a nice play on the definition of “rich,” a nod to the fact that the countries with the wealthiest citizens aren’t necessarily the most “rich” in terms of beauty or attractions. It also makes you think of Inca gold and the cultural attractions from those ancestral people. You come here for a “trail of riches” and you leave rich in experiences.

The long-running one previously was “Peru – land of the Incas.” You still see it pop up here and there. That was all well and good, but it left out Lima’s gastronomy, the Amazon jungle , the alpine mountaineering, the Nazca Lines, and most of the reasons you visit the north. See our reviews of the best Peru luxury hotels scattered all over the country.

trekking in Peru

Brazil – Visit and Love Us Another generic travel slogan that could apply to just about anywhere that’s an attractive destination, the opposite of “You’ll have a lousy time here.” The former one wasn’t much better: “Brazil, sensational!”

With a wacky science-denying, rainforest-destroying president at the helm formerly as the coronavirus was running rampant, Brazil’s tourism industry took a big hit that it’s not likely to recover from soon. The new president is an improvement overall, but he is re-instituting the reciprocal visa fee that went away years ago. This is basically a signal to Americans and Canadians that they should go somewhere else on vacation instead, especially if they’re a family that has to pay $160 per person.

Since not many people are lining up to visit – and love them – maybe a better slogan for a country were service isn’t known to be great anyway would be “Our neighbors want you more than we do.”

Paraguay – You Have to Feel It! Do I really? Does anyone? This doesn’t tell me anything about what’s attractive and worth visiting in a land-locked country that most people would have trouble pointing out on a map.

Uruguay Natural This is an odd choice on a whole lot of levels, especially since probably 95% of the visitors to Uruguay go to one of three places: ferry terminus Colonia, beach resort area Punta del Este, or the urban capital of Montevideo. Most of what’s “natural” in Uruguay would be cattle ranches and vineyards, not “natural” forests or jungles.

I’m guessing this was chosen more for the agricultural export industry than tourism and it just got slapped on everything. If they really wanted to see a spike in tourism, “We’ve got legal weed and gay marriage” would probably have more of an impact.

Argentina – Beats to Your Rhythm Like Colombia’s “Feel the Rhythm,” we get a musical reference as a tourism slogan, appealing to our ears instead of our eyes. Argentina does have tango music, so it kind of makes sense, but that’s mainly a Buenos Aires thing. I don’t think of any rhythm when I picture Iguazu Falls, Salta, Mendoza , or Patagonia. As best I can tell, they’ve been using this one for at least eight years though, so don’t fix what’s not broken I guess.

Chile tourism slogan impossible possible

Dream of Chile – Where the Impossible Is Possible The longest-running tourism slogan on this list is bold and confident, a reference to all the epic adventure activities that await from the Atacama Desert down to the bottom of Patagonia. Most countries would say it’s impossible to increase the amount of a country’s public parkland in the 2000s or to connect every one of those parks with hiking trails in such a large country, but they’ve managed both. They made it possible.

This is a far better slogan than their previous one: “All are welcome.” Here at the bottom of the world, let’s go with bold instead of a lame doormat slogan.

Happy Aruba: Caribbean island lives up to its slogan

“Make us happy and you make us good.” — Robert Browning

The tiny Caribbean island of Aruba is making a big claim for itself, as one of the happiest places in the world. Last September, the island even hosted the Happiness 360 Conference, in collaboration with the United Nations World Tourism Organization, where tourism leaders from around the world explored the concept of happiness and how it can be integrated into tourism and culture.

Aruba lies only 18 miles off the coast of Venezuela, and is one of the ABC Islands (the others being Bonaire and Curacao). The island’s Dutch heritage is still present in its brightly colored architecture, and Dutch being one of the main languages spoken, along with English, Spanish and the appealing local tongue, Papiamento.

Beautiful Caribbean: Photo tours of the ABC islands

The island can back up its happiness claim with a visitor-friendly checklist: More than 90 nationalities spice up Aruba’s cuisine, making it a great destination choice for foodies. The island’s terrain alternates a rugged northern and eastern coastline with gentle protected beaches on its western and southern side, perfect for families with small kids, including the appropriately named Baby Beach on the island’s southeast shore.

The island is outside the hurricane belt, and averages only 20 inches of rainfall per year, and temps hover in the mid-80s year-round. Aruba has its own currency (the florin) but shops readily accept U.S. dollars. Aruba’s goal to become the greenest island in the Caribbean includes banning all plastic bags from retail stores as of Jan. 1, 2017.

“Aruba’s ‘One Happy Island’ claim is more than a slogan … and I guarantee, once you’ve been there you’ll want to return,” said Sue Campbell, author of Fodor’s in Focus Aruba , and a visitor to the island more times than she can count. “I've traveled the Caribbean extensively and there are few places that I can imagine actually living without getting island fever or going stir crazy. I can get work done while on Aruba since they are so technologically sophisticated and have all of the modern conveniences of home.”

Aruba balances the delights of the beach — most especially its famous Palm Beach, where many of the island’s finest resorts are located — with the nearby delights of the capital city of Oranjestad, which has some of the best dining and shopping in the Caribbean. And Eagle Beach is among one of the most scenic in the world. All of Aruba’s beaches are open to the public, but you’ll rarely get hassled by vendors as you do in so many other popular tropical tourism escapes.

To amp up the happiness factor, travelers can schedule their visit during one of the island’s annual festivals, including the Soul Beach Music Festival, or the colorful Carnival, featuring music, parades and over-the-top costumes. And two uniquely Aruban annual events — the Aruba Hi-Winds windsurfing and kite boarding championships, and the Aruba Beach Tennis Open, a sport created on this island — attract competitors and visitors from all over the world. The ensuing beach party blowouts have become legendary week-long celebrations.

If visitors to Aruba are ever in need of assistance, they can avail themselves of the services of the island’s Happy Information Officers. While it may sound like a perfect setup for a Monty Python sketch, the Happy Information Officers are trained professionals waiting to answer questions and impart information on the island’s attractions and events. The officers are mobile and can be picked out by their teal green T-shirts with bold letters. They can also be found at the Aruba tourism kiosk located at Oranjestad’s Plaza Daniel Leo.

“The locals are warm and welcoming and it's easy to feel right at home seconds after you arrive,” adds Campbell. “But you have to get off the drop-dead gorgeous beaches and the first-rate resorts to really explore and discover just how cool and quirky this island really is. There are many secret spots well worth seeking out; just ask a local, they’ll be happy to tell you where to find them.”

In fact, the Aruba Tourism Authority recently launched a video series featuring island residents waxing rhapsodic over where to find an out-of-the-way natural pool, where to enjoy local art, or the best place to chow down on local fare.

There’s a multitude of ways visitors can switch up their time on the island, alternating days at their resort or in town, with days getting out and exploring the nooks and crannies of the surprisingly arid outback. Aruba’s landscape can be rugged, so renting a 4x4 vehicle is a great first move. Places to explore include Arikok National Park's 7,907 acres of wildlife, caves and secluded beaches, and the small town of San Nicolas, where they can pull up a stool at Charlie’s Bar, which has been cooling off customers since 1941.  San Nicolas, which locals call “Sunrise City,” is going through a renaissance now with all kinds of new art and museums and cultural attractions to lure visitors off the tourist side for something different. Animal lovers will want to seek out the Donkey Sanctuary, where abandoned donkeys are cared for. Donkeys, which the Spanish introduced to the island when they first set out to colonize Aruba, were left to run wild once cars became the mode of transportation.

Unique selling propositions and destination branding: A longitudinal perspective on the Caribbean tourism in transition

Profile image of Babu George

2016, Tourism: An international Interdisciplinary Journal

A recurring theme in the tourism literature is how travelers and tourism businesses perceive the concept of diversity and uniqueness of attractions pinned to places called tourism destinations and respond to their perceptions. In this backdrop, the primary focus of this research is a reexamination of the unique selling proposition (USP) based tourism marketing practice that various Caribbean island nations unleased since the early 2000's. Th e extent of USP adoption in the web-based marketing campaigns of these destinations over a timeline from 2004 to 2014 is studied. Analysis shows that higher level USP use initially rose, reached a peak, and then declined. Also, over the years, destinations high in attraction diversity tended to delimit themselves from using highly targeted USPs while their counterparts with less attraction diversity routinely employed hierarchically superior USP slogans. Th e exact number of attractions in a destination country did not signifi cantly imply t...

Tourism is a promise and destinations communicate the credibility of that promise by means of destination brands. Branding has become a key tool for tourism destinations to make explicit the complexity of experiences to be expected by tourists visiting a destination. This paper provides a comprehensive literature review of various issues associated with tourism destination branding. It brings together a wide range of debates in the generic marketing literature, places them alongside the nuances of tourism, and thereby identifies unique challenges of branding in tourism destination contexts. Finally, a case study of USP based national tourism branding campaigns in the Caribbean is presented.

Although the concept of branding has been applied extensively to products and services, tourism destination branding is a relatively recent phenomenon. In the ever more competitive tourism marketplace, destinations are increasingly adopting branding techniques in an effort to craft and differentiate an identity which emphasises the uniqueness of their product. Tourism destinations are difficult to manage because of the complex relationships of their diverse public and private stakeholders. It focuses particularly on the political processes involved in successful brand management and on the vital role of public and private sector stakeholders. This paper briefly discusses the role of branding in destination marketing and evaluates whether destinations can indeed be branded as other goods and services.

Prior to completing a tourism marketing PhD the author spent almost two decades working in the tourism industry, mostly in destination marketing organisations (DMOs). In this paper he laments a significant gap in the literature in the area of tourism destination branding, a field that has only attracted academic attention since the late 1990s. While interest in applications of brand theory to practise in tourism is increasing, there is a paucity of published research with which to guide DMOs. There has been relatively little discussion on the complexity involved in capturing the essence of a multi-attributed destination with a succinct and focused brand position, in a way that is both meaningful to the multiplicity of target audiences of interest to stakeholders and effectively differentiates the destination from competitors. The paper summarises six issues that make the application of branding theory to destinations a complex undertaking.

Tourism is one of the leading and most dynamic sectors of the world economy, and for its rapid pace, it is recognized as the economic phenomenon of the century. Modern tourism is an increasingly intensive, business-oriented, and commercially organized group of activities, and tourism marketing is becoming ever more important for a destination’s competitiveness. In this context, our research aims to analyze and synthesize the challenges marketing of tourist destinations is facing. The approach taken in this paper is to assess the related literature and focus on the key points for future research on tourism marketing. We argue that destination marketing must lead to the optimization of the effects of tourism and the achievement of national tourism organizations' strategic goals. This paper contributes to marketing professionals and academics, pointing out the uniqueness of tourism marketing.

Current Issues in Tourism

The purpose of the paper is to provide a collaborative practitioner/academic interpretation of a destination’s competitiveness through the lens of brand positioning in the domestic short break drive market. A 173 item questionnaire, which was mailed to a systematic random sample of 3000 households in the target market, attracted a 17% useable response. The paper compares how one destination, the Sunshine Coast, is positioned in its most important market, in relation to the brand identity intended by the destination marketing organization (DMO). Key constructs were brand salience, brand associations and brand resonance. The Sunshine Coast was found to hold a leadership position in the minds of consumers, and the results indicated a strong level of congruence between actual market perceptions and the brand identity intended by the DMO. There were strong associations between brand salience, brand associations and brand resonance. The findings provided the destination of interest with both a measure of past marketing effectiveness as well as positive indicators of future performance. The paper represents collaboration between a tourism practitioner and tourism academic, and attempts a contribution to the emerging literature on destination competitiveness through the lens of positioning theory.

This City Was Voted Best in the U.S. for the 12th Straight Year by T+L Readers, Who Say It ‘Can Compete With Any European Capital’

See the No. 1 pick and 14 more top cities in the United States, according to our annual "World’s Best Awards" survey for 2024.

How Voting Works

What readers loved.

  • The Full List

Wherever Travel + Leisure readers go in the United States, they look for cities with palpable history, walkable downtowns, regional cuisine, and robust cultural and artistic institutions. Many states in the South and West were highly represented this year, but readers did recognize a few classic Northeast destinations this year. One characteristic that seemed to capture readers’ hearts, no matter the destination? A strong identity, and a sense that the city was unlike others elsewhere in the country.

Taylor McIntyre/Travel + Leisure

Every year for our World's Best Awards survey, T+L asks readers to weigh in on travel experiences around the globe — to share their opinions on the top hotels, resorts, cities, islands, cruise ships, spas, airlines, and more. Over 186,000 T+L readers completed the 2024 survey. A total of more than 700,000 votes were cast across over 8,700 properties (hotels, cities, cruise lines, etc.).

Cities were specifically rated on the criteria below:

  • Sights/landmarks
  • Friendliness

For each characteristic, respondents could choose a rating of excellent, above average, average, below average, or poor. The final scores are averages of these responses.

Readers rewarded past favorites like Chicago (No. 9), Honolulu (No. 4), and New Orleans (No. 9), all of which returned to the list, and once again showed their love for Charleston, which ranked No. 1 for the 12th year in a row. But for the first time, Annapolis (No. 12) and Aspen (No. 10) appeared in the rankings, indicating that readers are increasingly drawn to new regional culture and outdoor hubs. New Mexico and Texas also had a strong showing this year — each state claimed two spots on the list, for Sante Fe and Taos, and Fort Worth and San Antonio, respectively.

The Full List

1. Charleston, South Carolina

The Holy City earned the top spot yet again, thanks to its combination of historic architecture, walkability, and Southern hospitality — and, as many readers noted, its unbeatable culinary scene. “Charleston can compete with any European capital for its arts, entertainment, active lifestyle, and food,” said one voter. Many visitors noted that they had come to the city several times for different types of trips, such as couples’ weekends, family vacations, or friends’ getaways, and that they found new things to experience each time. Another reader chimed in that Charleston was, “a great example of a city that holds to their roots, but also strives to be current and welcoming to everyone.”

2. Santa Fe, New Mexico

Sean Pavone/Getty Images

This artsy Southwestern destination has ranked high on our list for nearly 20 years, and it’s not just because of the 320 days of sunshine it receives each year, though it certainly doesn’t hurt. “Santa Fe is like its own country within a country,” gushed one reader. “It’s such a unique blend of culture and history that you don’t see in the rest of the USA.” Another visitor called its downtown, with Pueblo-style buildings and independent galleries, “a photographer's dream and a shopper's delight.”

WBA Hall of Fame honoree. Reader Score: 87.43

3. Savannah, Georgia

Heather Durham/Travel + Leisure

Readers adore Savannah for its leafy parks, great shopping, carriage rides, and cemetery tours. “This is one of my family's favorite cities,”said one reader, adding “We try to get to Savannah and Tybee Island each year.” The Starland District, in particular, is thriving these days, with the debut of Hotel Bardo and must-visit restaurants like Brochu’s Family Tradition.

WBA Hall of Fame honoree. Reader Score: 85.27

4. Honolulu, Hawaii

okimo/Getty Images

This island capital earned top marks for the natural beauty of its beaches, volcanoes, and hiking trails. But travelers also praised its shopping and Native Hawaiian traditions. “Aloha spirit abounds!” explained one visitor. “You can relax, go to a luau, go for a hike, go shopping, dive with turtles and dolphins. There is something for everyone.” Another traveler appreciated their interactions with locals, saying, “The people are the friendliest I have found on any of my travels, and the culture is mesmerizing.”

Reader Score: 85.17

5. New Orleans, Louisiana

Tessa Desjardins/Travel + Leisure

“It is ALL about food and drink in NOLA,” declared one reader. It’s a sentiment that’s widely shared — visitors most often praise the city’s eclectic mix of cuisines (like Creole, Vietnamese, Filipino, and barbeque) and its legendary bars and restaurants. Many travelers also appreciated the city’s laid-back vibe (it is the Big Easy, after all.) “New Orleans is a great walking around, let's-pop-into-this-place-kind-of-city,” according to one visitor. Others noted its superb history tours, festivals, and markets.

WBA Hall of Fame honoree. Reader score: 84.53

6. San Antonio, Texas

Historic sites like the Alamo and the Mission are two notable entry points into this south Texas city. But contemporary attractions also abound — Museum Reach, a three-mile pedestrian park along the San Antonio River, has many public art installations. Readers also love strolling along the River Walk, which one reader said was “probably one of the nicest places we have ever visited in the States. It was exceptionally maintained and absolutely beautiful.”

Reader Score: 83.20

7. Fort Worth, Texas

benedek/Getty Images

“Cosmopolitan meets ranch” is how one reader described this thriving metropolis, whose slogan is “Where the West Begins.” Though Fort Worth retains its cowboy image with one of the country’s best rodeos and a daily cattle drive through the streets of the stockyard district, it’s not all ten-gallon hats — the cultural institutions, such as The Kimbell Art Museum, are world-class. “There are almost 20 theaters. You can attend the ballet, the opera, and symphony orchestra concerts,” noted one visitor.

Reader Score: 83.19

8. New York, New York

Alessandra Amodio/Travel + Leisure

The city that never sleeps lives up to its name: from Broadway shows, to iconic museums, to next-level shopping, to some of the world’s best restaurants, you’ll never be bored in the Big Apple. As one reader summed it up: “What can one say that hasn't already been said? NYC is a great place to visit. Costly, yes. Worth it? Absolutely. Reasonably clean? Yes. Fun? That goes without saying.”

WBA Hall of Fame honoree. Reader score: 83.16

9. Chicago, Illinois

tunart/Getty Images

Whether you want to take in some of America’s great architecture on a Chicago River tour, catch a baseball game at Wrigley Field, or find the best deep-dish, you can do it all in this dynamic, walkable city, which also received praise for its easy-to-navigate public transportation. “I love Chicago. The food, the sports. Did I mention the food? From a cultural perspective it’s fantastic because of how many people are from all over the world. Multiple parts of town have different vibes that keep it fresh and exciting to visit,” said one reader.

WBA Hall of Fame honoree. Reader Score: 82.44

10. Aspen, Colorado

DCrane08/Getty Images

While this mountain town is mostly known for its first-rate skiing (and celebrity-spotting at Hotel Jerome,) T+L readers also noted its year-round appeal and spectacular scenery. From hitting the trails, to checking out the renowned Baldwin Gallery, to having a drink at the legendary Woody Creek Tavern, readers found Aspen to be “a very well-rounded town full of great shops, museums, and restaurants.”

Reader Score: 82.41

11. Taos, New Mexico

Mona Makela Photography/Getty Images

This small city packs a punch. Located in the Sangre de Cristo Mountains, it’s an adventure paradise for hiking and skiing, as well as rafting the Rio Grande. It’s also home to Taos Pueblo, a 1,000-year old continually inhabited Adobe community, and a rich Indigenous culture. Readers were also charmed by the town’s many independent galleries and shops. “Taos is for athletes, artists, and open minded travelers,” said one reader.

Reader Score: 81.36

12. Annapolis, Maryland

Richard T. Nowitz/Getty Images

Appearing on our list for the first time, this coastal city — known as “the sailing capital of the United States”— received top marks not only for its nautical charms, but also its historic sites, walkable downtown, and of course, crab cakes. Annapolis is also home to the U.S. Naval Academy, and many readers touted football games as a can’t-miss activity. “I love the culture and activities available in Annapolis. Whether you're visiting for educational purposes or coming to enjoy the Navy football games, you will definitely have a good time,” said one voter.

Reader Score: 81.26

13. Nashville, Tennessee

Readers can’t get enough of the nightlife in Music City. Whether it’s a lively honky tonk on Broadway, a Grand Ole Opry performance, or an open mic night at a quiet cafe, visitors are spoiled for choice when it comes to hearing top-notch artists. And while things can certainly get rowdy, “it’s not all bachelorette parties and cowboy hats,” as one reader notes —  there are dozens of places to catch great theater and art. The city’s strong culinary scene and efficient airport also received praise.

Reader Score: 81.18

14. Boston, Massachusetts

Violet Smirnova/Travel + Leisure

This New England capital captivates all types of travelers, whether you’re a history buff intent on walking the Freedom Trail, a baseball lover looking to catch a game at Fenway Park, or a gourmand seeking the best Italian food in the North End. “It's a perfect mix of old and modern,” claims one reader. Visitors also appreciated that the highly walkable city has distinct neighborhoods, each with a unique feel. Plus, Boston has welcomed several noteworthy hotels in recent years, including the first Raffles property in North America, which opened this September.

Reader Score: 80.75

15. Alexandria, Virginia

Photos by Coyle/Getty Images

This historic city, which is just five miles from Washington D.C. but feels worlds away, strikes the perfect balance between sophisticated and small-town. Readers were drawn to its picturesque waterfront of Old Town, and also praised attractions like the The Torpedo Factory Art Center and the Mount Vernon Trail, ideal for bird watching and easy bike rides.

Amid the anti-tourism trend, here are 6 destinations that desperately want you to pay them a visit

The list of locations fed up with overtourism seems to grow every day.

  • Barcelona: tourists are berated and squirted with water
  • Palma: “tourism = terrorism” graffiti plastered on a wall
  • Amsterdam: British stag and hen parties are not welcome
  • Venice: tourist “congestion charge” levied on the busiest days of the spring and summer
  • Dubrovnik: clamping down on the number of cruise ships and the timings of visits to the Old Town

Even distant Juneau, state capital of Alaska, will soon hold a vote on whether to introduce “ship-free Saturdays” to reduce the impact of cruise passengers.

Yet the vast majority of destinations are desperate for more tourists, not fewer.

Inbound tourism is the closest that any nation, resort, county or city, can get to free money. Visitors bring highly desirable social and economic benefits.

They foster enterprise and create jobs, as well as boosting local amenities to a level that could not be sustained by the resident population alone.

“Soft” benefits include instilling pride in the community and improving human-to-human understanding.

Most places would love to have the “problem” of overtourism. They share the same challenges. How to:

  • Attract more tourists, preferably of the high-spending variety
  • Lure people during off-peak times, stretching the season
  • Persuade visitors to stay longer

Some are trying harder than others, and I have picked locations around the world that are likely to prove particularly welcoming.

“Our slogan is ‘ Albania – all you need is here’,” says the tourism minister, Mirela Kumbaro.

Her aim is to make her nation “the champion of tourism in the region by 2030” . The aim is to reach an annual visitor figure five times higher than the 2.8 million population.

Albania has doubled the capacity of Tirana airport and is building a second airport in the south of the country that will be devoted to tourists.

Ms Kumbaro promises: “You can make a lot of friends. Friendship is part of our touristic offer. Hospitality is the main characteristic of Albania.”

I have been visiting this wild and wonderful Adriatic nation since the 1980s – when it was the most hardline of communist nations in Europe (and a partner of China rather than the Soviet Union). Since the collapse of Enver Hoxha’s dictatorship, the country has become far easier to reach and even more intriguing.

This summer Albania is more accessible at lower prices than ever from the UK . Tirana, the capital is good fun for a couple of days, with some interesting museums devoted to the dark days of state communism.

Inland, Albania shares with North Macedonia the beautiful Lake Ohrid – also known as “Lake Como on the cheap”. Albania is certainly affordable.

On the coast, the main resort – and the one recommended for its proximity to Tirana – is Durres. It has an appealing beach and some great places to eat and drink.

In the early 1990s, Cuba ’s ideological soul-mate and financial backer, the USSR, collapsed. Fidel Castro took the remarkable step of declaring in 1994: “Only tourism can save Cuba.” With red tape eased and cheap Caribbean sun on offer, international visitors flooded in.

Tens of thousands of British package holidaymakers arrived each year. But our love affair with the Caribbean’s biggest and most enticing island faded, and the last Tui charter flight from Manchester to the main resort, Varadero, departed in April.

This month the current Cuban president, Miguel Díaz-Canel, reiterated the desire for tourists – who, he said, would appreciate “the comfort of our hotels, the beauty of our beaches and landscapes, and the security visitors and citizens enjoy, among other attractions”.

The main attraction is the faded glory of Havana, its citizens, their music and a repertoire of architecture from Spanish colonial to early 20th-century ostentation.

To sample more of Cuba, at a more relaxed pace, head east to the city of Matanzas – on an attractive bay about 20 miles west of Varadero. It is known, ambitiously, as the “Athens of Cuba,” and does have some attractive buildings on the main square.

Cuba’s top resort, Varadero occupies a beautiful, 12-mile peninsula with a picture-postcard-perfect strip of beach.

Unlike the Communist island just 90 miles off its shores, the Sunshine State is not exactly having an undertourism crisis. Overall, Florida attracted fractionally more international visitors in 2023 than in the pre-pandemic year of 2019, but UK numbers were down 14 per cent.

“We continue to invest in the UK market, which is second only to Canada for us,” said Florida’s vice-president of marketing, Brett Laiken in May. He promised an increase in “consumer activity to create that demand”.

US domestic tourists traditionally stay away during July and August, with the vacuum partially filled by the 21st-century equivalent of Kipling’s “mad dogs and Englishmen”.

To avoid too many compatriots, British visitors might want to venture beyond the theme parks of Orlando and the hotels of Miami Beach. Tampa and St Petersburg make a great twin-city combination, while the Florida panhandle – the thin strip of territory to the northwest – feels like another world entirely.

The North African kingdom wants to double annual international tourism numbers to 26 million by 2030 – the year in which it will co-host the football World Cup alongside Portugal and Spain .

As part of this programme, the government has opened its skies – with ferocious competition between easyJet, Jet2 and Ryanair from the UK. Manchester-Tangier on Ryanair is one of the latest new routes. “Morocco is nearer than the Canaries ,” says Eddie Wilson, chief executive of Ryanair DAC. “There’s everything from beaches to a sense of mystery.”

Marrakech is the main tourist draw. The vast open square, Djemaa el Fna, is the hub of the city, populated by makeshift cafes serving food cooked over red-hot charcoal. The centuries-old medina, with its maze of alleys and mass of vendors, is the main attraction. I recommend the lovely Jardin Majorelle: founded by Yves Saint-Laurent and containing the Museum of Islamic Art. But don’t overlook Casablanca, the lively commercial hub; the elegant capital, Rabat; and Fez, which has the most atmospheric medina in the nation – rightly Unesco-listed.

Beyond the cities, the Atlantic coast has notable resorts in Agadir and Essaouira – the latter is more relaxed and colourful. Inland, the Atlas Mountains are magnificent hiking territory while the desert is accessible too.

Northern Ireland

“For a long time, Northern Ireland was not viewed as an attractive tourism destination due to our recent troubled past,” the NI Department of the Economy says.

It now has a plan for the next 10 years: “To increase the value of tourism to the Northern Ireland economy by 50-75 per cent compared to 2019.”

One component of that ambition: keeping costs for visitors down by subsidising travel costs. Visitors from Great Britain who fly in to City of Derry airport in the northwest on new easyJet links from Edinburgh and Liverpool will enjoy the use of a small, friendly airport propped up at a rate of £6,000 per day by public money.

Derry/Londonderry is the most compelling destination in Northern Ireland: at its heart, a walled city on a hillside, with spectacular landscapes (and seascapes) beyond – and many stories to be told, ideally by a local guide.

Northern Ireland’s capital hosts the highly successful Titanic Belfast attraction, the encyclopaedic Ulster Museum and the vivid reflection of recent events in the “Peace Wall”. Among the many possible side-trips, I particularly recommend the train to the pretty port of Bangor.

Saudi Arabia

“We win people’s hearts and minds by opening our doors to the world through a tourism sector where life-changing stories happen every day” – that is the aim of the Saudi tourism ministry.

Suppose nations were judged on the scale of their presence at international travel industry events such as the World Travel Market in London and ITB Berlin. The kingdom of Saudi Arabia would have gone from last place two decades ago (when its presence, I recall, comprised one man and a desk) to first, with an enormous, shiny and heavily populated pavilion with a footprint that seems bigger than Rutland.

The man with a plan is Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman. The Saudi ruler plans to attract 150 million tourists by 2030. Complicated visa rules have been ditched, and women under 40 are no longer required to travel with either a husband or a brother.

A new airline, Riyadh Air, has been set up to help fly in visitors. Key attractions include the desert oasis of AlUla , the coastal city of Jeddah and the capital region – including the national museum and the “reimagined” Diriyah Gate area, another Unesco world heritage site. On the horizon: Red Sea resorts to match those in Egypt, and a new Saudi-owned cruise line, Aroya.

Yet many people are deterred by Saudi Arabia’s record on human rights and its treatment of women and gay people. “Same-sex relations are illegal,” the Foreign Office warns. Its counterpart, the US State Department, says: “Reconsider travel to Saudi Arabia due to the threat of missile and drone attacks. Exercise increased caution in Saudi Arabia due to terrorism, the risk of arrest based on social media activity, and importation of prohibited items.”

Some international travellers also enjoy a drink while on holiday. Visit Saudi warns: “The sale, purchase, and consumption of alcohol and drugs is illegal in Saudi Arabia.”

Politics | mike bianchi: pat williams, orlando’s magical dreamer, passes away, politics | ‘free state of florida’ welcome signs touting desantis motto cost $60k.

A new sign on Georgia-Florida border on Thomasville Road north of Tallahassee welcomes motorists to the "Free state of Florida." (Jeff Schweers)

Signs welcoming visitors to “The Free State of Florida” now stand at 24 locations along highways and at two welcome centers, said Michael Williams, a spokesman for the Florida Department of Transportation, in an email.

Williams did not answer questions about who decided to erect the new signs, which he said were created in-house at a department facility in Lake City. The state disclosed the cost of the signs, which were unveiled in a DOT press conference last week, in response to a public records request from the Orlando Sentinel.

The department was reviewing its messaging and “took the opportunity to offer a refresh of the signage, including now offering ‘Hurry back’ signage as motorists leave Florida,” he wrote.

The signage, he added, was “not unique to Florida as many states choose to offer a friendly message to drivers who are excited and look forward to crossing state lines when they travel.”

A new sign at the Georgia-Florida border on Thomasville Road north of Tallahassee urges people to return soon. (Jeff Schweers)

Gregory Koger, a political science professor at the University of Miami, said such a politically charged welcome to visitors was unusual.

“I’m certainly not familiar with anything like this,” Koger said. “Most of the road signage I’ve seen is based on ordinary state slogans. Drive into Georgia, and it’s the Peach State. When I drive into Montana, it’s Big Sky Country.”

The phrase “Free State of Florida” dates back to at least 2021, when conservatives began using it to describe DeSantis’ opposition to most COVID-19 restrictions. DeSantis then began using variations of the phrase himself, including in a 2022 speech to the Conservative Political Action Conference, or CPAC, in Orlando and in his 2023 inaugural address .

In his 2022 State of the State address, in which he called Florida, “the freest state in the United States,” DeSantis said the state was “the escape hatch for those chafing under authoritarian, arbitrary and seemingly never-ending mandates and restrictions.”

Since then, the phrase has been repeatedly turned into political merchandise, including a $25 “Free State of Florida” Christmas mug available at the DeSantis campaign’s website beginning in 2022 and a “Free State of Florida” flag featuring DeSantis’ face available from the Bay County GOP for a $20 donation.

The new signs are “using the resources of the state to promote Gov. DeSantis’ brand, because it’s a phrase that’s associated with him,” Koger said.

“It’s not surprising,” he added. “He’s been using the resources of the state to promote his brand since he became governor, so it’s a continuation of that pattern. But it’s another piece of evidence that he doesn’t see a line between his own political interests and the best interests, the long-term interests, of the state of Florida.”

Asked about the appropriateness of the slogan on state signs, Lt. Gov. Jeanette Nunez told WFLA Tampa , “We continue to stand by the ‘free state of Florida.’ We believe that we provide freedom. Freedom for the right to life, of course, for those babies. We continue to stand by freedom of opportunity. That’s something the governor prides himself on.”

Ironically, Florida’s state lines were   the scene of a COVID-era DeSantis policy at odds with his later stance.

In March 2020, DeSantis ordered a two-week, self-quarantine for anyone arriving in the state from the New York City region, which was experiencing an infectious wave at the time. That included highway checkpoints at the Florida border, many of them near the current “Free State of Florida” signs.

Family Break Finder

One of the great things about travelling is the over zealous advertising slogans countries around the world come up with to entice you to pack your bags, grab your passport and spend your hard-earned cash in their hotels, malls and restaurants.

Did you know – Culture Trip now does bookable, small-group trips? Pick from authentic, immersive Epic Trips , compact and action-packed Mini Trips and sparkling, expansive Sailing Trips .

In fact, some of the slogans are so ridiculous that the clever clogs at Home & Leisure (former Family Break Finder) put all the funny sayings and phrases together and shoved them all into this impressive map:

Family Break Finder

Here’s just a few that made us LOL:

1. colombia – “colombia is magical realism”….

Family Break Finder

-But what does that even mean? ( Here’s your answer )

2. The United States of America – “All Within Your Reach”…

Family Break Finder

– Unless you’re a minority… (But hopefully it doesn’t get to that point!)

3. Slovakia – “Travel in Slovakia, Good Idea”…

Family Break Finder

-Truly inspiring, really Slovakia, we’re packing our bags now. (But really, it’s just underrated )

4. Ireland – “Jump into Ireland”…

Family Break Finder

-We’d rather not, too cold. (Unless you’re visiting all the EPIC places in this gem of a country …)

6. The United Kingdom – “Home of Amazing Moments”…

You might be surprised to learn who used campaign buttons as a strategy first.

Slogan quiz

Every politician tries to boil down their hundreds of promises and long speeches into one succinct slogan.

The first campaign to use advertising and slogans was William Henry Harrison in 1840 who used, “Tippecanoe and Tyler, Too!” The slogan referred to Harrison’s status as a war hero in the 1811 Tecumseh’s War and his running mate John Tyler. Harrison won in a landslide.

Here’s a quiz to see how much you know about political mottos.

caribbean tourism slogans

Eisenhower’s landslide victory ended the 20-year run of Democrats in the White House. Which of the following three slogans was not used by Democrat opponent Adlai Stevenson in the race?

A) All the Way with Adlai

B) Peace and Prosperity

C) Go Forward with Stevenson-Sparkman

Answer: B. “Peace and Prosperity” was Eisenhower’s slogan in the next election, which he also won against Stevenson.

Again again

One of several of Ronald Reagan’s 1980 campaign slogans was “Let’s Make America Great Again,” which is similar to Republican President Donald Trump’s slogan in 2016, 2020 and 2024. Reagan won the election in a landslide victory. What was incumbent President Jimmy Carter’s slogan?

A) A peanut in every pot

B) Re-elect Carter-Mondale, A Tested and Trustworthy Team

C) For the Future

D) He’s making us proud again

The other slogans are from (C) Richard Nixon in 1960 and (D) Gerald Ford in 1976.

2024 campaign

Al Gore, B – 2000

A) Abraham Lincoln

B) Ronald Reagan

C) John F. Kennedy

D) Woodrow Wilson

Reagan used the slogan in the 1980 election after America experienced low economic growth in the 1970s. Reagan carried 44 states and won the Electoral College 489-49.

Horse power

Whose presidential campaign was the first to use the slogan, “Don’t Swap Horses in the Middle of The Stream”?

B) Jimmy Carter

D) Herbert Hoover

Whose 1884 presidential campaign used the slogan, “Ma, Ma, Where’s My Pa? Gone to the White House, Ha, Ha, Ha!”

A) James G. Blaine

B) Grover Cleveland

C) Benjamin Harrison

D) William McKinley

Scandal is nothing new in politics. Grover Cleveland’s campaign was marred by an allegation that he fathered an illegitimate child, which incited the slogan “Ma, Ma, Where’s my Pa? Gone to the White House, Ha, Ha, Ha!” It should be noted that Cleveland used his own clever slogan during his campaign to refer to his opponent’s alleged unethical business dealings within the railroad industry, “Blaine, Blaine, James G. Blaine, The Continental Liar From the State of Maine.”

Playing chicken

Whose presidential campaign used the slogan, “A Chicken in Every Pot and a Car in Every Garage”?

A) Herbert Hoover

B) Franklin D. Roosevelt

C) Harry S. Truman

D) Calvin Coolidge

The economy was booming and Hoover used the slogan to define his 1928 presidential campaign. However, the 1929 stock market crash sunk the global economy and left Hoover’s campaign promise empty.

Dollars and sense

Whose presidential campaign used the slogan, “It’s the economy, stupid”?

A) Robert J. Dole

B) Bill Clinton

C) Barack Obama

D) John F. Kennedy

Clinton’s campaign strategist James Carville coined the phrase. It became the de facto slogan for the 1992 campaign. Other slogans were, “For America, for the People” and “It’s Time to fix America.”

Test score: More than three correct answers: front-runner. Three or fewer correct answers: lame duck.

caribbean tourism slogans

Sticking it to them

Presidential candidates try to keep their slogans clean and positive, but if you’ve been offended by what their supporters may have on their cars, there’s not a lot you can do about it.

“For those citizens without wealth or power, a bumper sticker may be one of the few means available to convey a message to a public audience.”

— Judge Myron H. Thompson in Baker v. Glover, a 1991 case in Alabama where a truck driver was cited for having a sticker with language that violated the state’s obscenity law.

The sticker in question said, “How’s My Driving? Call 1-800-EAT SH**!” Expletive deleted.
