Best for families: Adventures by Disney's Rhine River Christmas Markets Cruise

Families looking to explore Christmas markets through Switzerland, France, Germany and The Netherlands will enjoy Adventures by Disney's Rhine River Cruise: Christmas Markets sailing. The eight-day cruise allows kids as young as 5 to join, though Disney's suggested age is 8 or older.

Fares for the once-a-year cruise include most meals, drinks at lunch and dinner (plus a nightly cocktail hour where a range of mixed drinks are complimentary), excursions in each port of call, porter service, transportation in port, Wi-Fi, gratuities for onboard staff and Adventure Guides, and onboard entertainment.

Couples looking to get away for the holidays should consider Viking 's Danube Christmas Delights river cruise. The seven-night cruise takes passengers to four countries: Hungary, Slovakia, Austria and Germany. The trip combines opportunities to explore the ports of call with lectures and cultural performances onboard the ship.

Best for old-world charm: Uniworld's Belgian Holiday Markets

The cruise fare includes premium spirits and wine, access to bikes and walking sticks, fitness classes, Wi-Fi, enrichment lectures, and shore excursions in each port. Onboard gratuities and group transfers to and from the airport are also included.

Best for solo travelers: Tauck's Yuletide Spirit

Solo travelers looking to enjoy a river cruise without the hassle of a single supplement should check out Tauck's Christmas market itineraries. On all European river cruises, including the seven-night Yuletide Spirit: Amsterdam to Brussels cruise, the line waives the single supplement on Category 1 riverview cabins.

If your cruise starts in Amsterdam, you don't have to be on the ship until 4 p.m. so use the morning to walk around town or get tickets to tour the Anne Frank House. On your second day in Amsterdam, visit the Rijksmuseum and take an evening canal cruise with the group. Foodies will love it when the cruise heads to Gouda to explore the history of the city plus get a tasting of stroopwafels, which are cookie sandwiches invented in the city.

The midpoint of the cruise will bring you to the decision to visit either Ghent, which is one of the oldest cities in Belgium, or Bruges, known for its medieval architecture and beautiful canals. Fares include meals, drinks during meals and happy hour, Wi-Fi, a library, excursions, bike rentals and a fitness center. Gratuity is not included for hotel stays and meals during the land portion of your trip.

Best for unique destinations: AmaWaterways' Gems of Southeast Europe

While many river cruises traverse the waters around France, Germany and Austria, AmaWaterways ' Gems of Southeast Europe itinerary takes guests to Bulgaria, Croatia, Hungary, Serbia and Romania. The seven-night cruise sails between Budapest and Giurgiu along the Danube River.

If your sailing starts in Budapest, you'll need to arrive a day early if you plan to explore the city; the cruise does not offer excursions here. Regensburg is one of Germany’s best preserved medieval cities, as well as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Join a guided walking tour showcasing the city’s architectural highlights, including the Old Town Hall and the Porta Praetoria, before visiting the Old Town Christmas market.

As an alternate option, sample some of Bavaria’s specialties—beer, sausage and pretzels. Or bike to the base of Walhalla where there is a neoclassical white marble temple inspired by the Parthenon in Athens. Since many of its dangerous shoals have been removed, the Rhine has been flowing peacefully along almost its entire length. So the best remedy for pre-Christmas stress: flow along for a few days. It will carry you relaxed past castles, palaces and monasteries to the old towns that have dressed up festively. There you can rummage for gifts in peace and quiet and get into the mood of anticipation with baked apples, punch and hearty brass band music. Rüdesheim was once secured by four castles, being strategically located at the end of former merchant routes. The ruins of Ehrenfels Castle, Boosenburg Castle and Brömserburg Castle, which today houses the Rheingau Wine Museum, are relics of the town's eventful history.

With 2,000 years of city history, Mainz is not only one of the oldest cities in Germany, but also a place where great history comes alive at every turn. Here we start the contemplative Christmas cruise on the Rhine. But you should also get to know the cathedral city with its many buildings and attractions. The best way is to arrive already relaxed one day before your cruise or simply extend your stay after the cruise.

2nd Day Rüdesheim Arr 08:00 am Dep 06:00 pm

You will spend the 2nd day of your Christmas cruise in the center of Rhine Romanticism, which once inspired poets and musicians. For example, Brahms composed his 3rd symphony in Rüdesheim. In cultural terms, the most famous place of the Rheingau has a lot to show, including historic noble courts and fortifications. And of course, on this day of your Christmas cruise on the Rhine, the coffee speciality "Rüdesheimer Kaffee", invented here, should not be missed.

Just before Christmas, the city of Rüdesheim glitters in matchless splendour. Come with us and stroll along the atmospheric Christmas market to the largest nativity scene in Germany and try the local mulled wine. During the guided tour, you will also experience the marketplace, the Oberstraße, the world-famous Drosselgasse and the Rhine promenade. Speyer’s most prominent monument is its cathedral. As one of the country’s most important High Romanesque cathedrals, it is listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. You are sure to have an enjoyable day in Speyer.

The Palatinate is known for its laid-back atmosphere, its Mediterranean-style climate and its wonderful cuisine. If you like fine wine, good food and regional specialities, you’ve come to the right place. And, as if that wasn’t enough, there are also castles, palaces, museums and mining centres to explore. You’ll want to take some of your free time to enjoy the quaint Christmas markets and warm up with traditional German dumplings, sausage, and glass of hearty Bavarian ale.

See inside a new ultra-luxury river cruise line that's charging up to $59,520 per person

• Newcomer Riverside Luxury Cruises wants to break into the growing river cruise market.
• The ultra-luxury cruise line  operates former Crystal ships in popular European rivers like the Danube.
• Riverside's 2024 cruises start at $1,055 per person for four days.

A new ultra-luxury cruise line wants to be the swankiest travel-by-river vacation option.

To do so, it's enticing cruisers with truffle-infused butter, $320-per-person dinners, and butlers that can be beckoned with a simple WhatsApp message.

Affluent travelers , meet Riverside Luxury Cruises.

The budding company first set sail in March 2023. With a year of service under its belt, its three ships are now sailing some of Europe's most popular rivers — starting at more than $260 per person per day.

Riverside is operated by Seaside Collection, a European hotelier.

The firm had its sights set on a river cruise venture since 2018, Jen Halboth, CEO of Riverside Luxury Cruises, told Business Insider.

Ironically, COVID-19 was the reason it got into the business.

Crystal Cruises declared bankruptcy in early 2022 amid the pandemic. Shortly after, Seaside purchased and updated five of the then-defunct cruise line's ships.

Three of these vessels now make up Riverside's fleet. The other two are being leased to competitor Uniworld River Cruises.

River cruising has become increasingly popular as wealthy travelers gravitate to ultra-luxury small-ship vacations.

River cruise ships are much smaller than their behemoth ocean-based counterparts, allowing Riverside to sail in waterways like Europe's Rhine, Rhone, Danube, Main, Moselle, and Saône rivers.

Along the way, guests can explore destinations many giant ships can't easily access — like Budapest, Hungary; Frankfurt, Germany; and Amsterdam — sometimes visiting more than one port in a day.

One of Riverside's shortest and cheapest 2024 voyages starts at $1,055 per person for a four-day Danube River cruise from Passau, Germany, to Vienna.

Alcohol and excursion packages can tack on an extra $75 to $175 per person per night.

Looking to ball out? The most expensive and longest itinerary is $59,521 per person for a three-river, 22-day cruise from Amsterdam to Budapest, Hungary, in the most expensive suite with the most inclusive package.

To compare, the cheapest 2024 voyage with all-inclusive luxury competitor Uniworld River Cruises starts at $2,000 per person for an eight-day Danube River sailing.

River cruisers tend to be over the age of 55.

But the new company is targeting guests 45 years old and older, specifically those who frequent luxury vacations but have yet to try a river cruise.

"New luxury travelers want to be pampered, get off and have an adventure, and come back and be taken care of," the cruise line's CEO said.

"Pampering” they will get.

Of Riverside's three ships, the 394-foot-long, 74-foot-wide Mozart can accommodate the most guests — up to 162, not including the 82 crew.

Yes, it's larger than Uniworld's ships, which range from 32 to 159 guests. But it's also significantly smaller than Royal Caribbean's new 9,950-person Icon of the Seas ocean vessel.

Like most cruise liners, Riverside's three ships have spas, buffets, and plush lounges and bars.

During the day, travelers can enjoy lunch at the open-air grill and relax to live music courtesy of Steinway and Bösendorfer pianos, no less.

At night, they can dine on a seven-course meal at the 295 euros ($320) per-person Vintage Room.

Riverside’s ships have up to 5 restaurants. Vintage Room is the only specialty option.

The cost to dine includes a wine pairing and plates like veal with truffle and chanterelle mushrooms and "surf and turf" with beef sirloin and scallops.

But don't expect a lackluster, rushed meal at the other complimentary options: "This is not a churn-and-burn," the company's CEO said of the ships' Waterside restaurants. "You come in for fine dining."

Infused, whipped butter is apparently one of Riverside's hottest commodities.

Sometimes, it has chiles. Other times, it's infused with citrus. If you're lucky, you'll get one with truffles.

"People were raving about our butter," Halboth said. "Everyone's waiting to see what butter they'll get at dinner each night."

Need to sleep off all that dairy? You're in luck. Every cabin has a king bed.

Riverside's suites range from 194 to 883 square-feet. These high-end cabins include butler service, stocked mini-bars, and espresso machines.

Some suites also have double-sink vanities and walk-in closets, a hallmark of an ultra-luxury cruise vessel .

Does Riverside’s more than $260 per person, per day fare seem reasonable now?

If yes, book soon. It'll only get more expensive from here.

These fares don't offset the amount Riverside is spending on amenities like the upscale food, according to Halboth. To make up for these expenditures, the cruise line plans to raise its prices gradually over the next two years.

The company's CEO said bookings have been 'a little lighter' since the start of 2024.

But the back half of the year is "filling up" thanks to Americans: About 70 to 80% of its guests are from North America, the company said.

Riverside will operate its Mozart, Ravel, and Debussy ships for three years as it 'hones the brand,' Halboth said.

The cruise line's two additional vessels would join its fleet in the next few years.

Given the growing popularity of river cruises , it's a good time for companies like Riverside to start expanding.

However, it could face plenty of incoming competition.

Jamie Loizou, the UK managing director of luxury river cruise line AmaWaterways, is forecasting 2024 as a "pivotal" year for the river cruise industry, noting that 15 new river-based vessels are expected to launch this year, Cruise Critic reported .

Everything you need to know before booking a European river cruise

If you’re thinking of going on a European river cruise, here’s everything you need to know about your first river sailing, writes Tiana Templeman.

Choosing the right river

European river cruises are available year-round, from sailings that take in the autumn colours along the Douro River in Portugal to Christmas market cruises during winter, tulip cruises in the Netherlands in spring, and summer sailings along the Rhine, Danube and other popular rivers.

If you’re finding it hard to know where to start when it comes to choosing the best river for your first cruise, it can be helpful to think about what you enjoy most and choose your river cruise itinerary accordingly. For example, the Danube is widely regarded as one of the most scenic river sailings in Europe; or you could indulge your love of food and wine along the Seine in France.

Keep an open mind

No matter how carefully you choose your itinerary, there will almost certainly be a few things on it that don’t particularly interest you. But it pays to keep an open mind. As someone who’s never been interested in war history, the prospect of touring Normandy’s World War II sites didn’t thrill me. However, learning about what happened at Omaha Beach and walking through the thousands of crosses at the Normandy American Cemetery was one of the most poignant and memorable moments of my trip.

When to book

While it’s possible to cruise year-round in Europe, choose your sailing date with care, as itineraries that are early or late in the season may be impacted by high or low river levels. If this happens, you could end up being bussed between ports instead of sailing. While it’s impossible to accurately predict river levels in advance, a mid or shoulder-season sailing is more likely to be hassle-free.

Choosing your cabin

No matter what line you sail on, river cruise cabins tend to be smaller than those you’ll find on ocean-going ships. If having more room to move is important to you, you may want to book a slightly higher cabin category with a larger floor area.

If you’re travelling on a tight budget, opting for a cabin with a window instead of a balcony is an easy way to save money. While the panoramic views from the floor-to-ceiling windows in a river ship balcony cabin are lovely, you’ll probably spend most of your time out and about in port or chatting with other travellers.

What to pack

The standard of dress on river ships tends to be more relaxed, even when you’re sailing with the same cruise line. For example, on my Viking River sailing in Portugal, most of the gents wore polo shirts to dinner, but long-sleeved collared shirts and dressy slacks were the norm on my Viking Ocean cruise.

As river cruise itineraries can involve long days of touring, pack comfortable clothes you can layer, a pair of worn-in walking shoes that can handle cobblestones, and wet weather gear. If your ship has a plunge or spa pool on the top deck, don’t forget your swimmers.

Booking excursions

With so many excursions included in your river cruise fare, there’s no chance of getting bored on a river cruise. Work on your fitness before your trip so you can make the most of your days in port, and pre-book any “must-do” excursions as soon as bookings open as these can fill up fast. Also, don’t rule out the extra for-a-fee excursions, as these often cater to special interests.

It’s okay to go your own way

One important thing to understand about river cruising is you don’t have to do every activity just because it’s included in your programme. Opting out can be a great way to balance independence verus group interaction and have the kind of European holiday that’s right for you.

For example, if you’re an art lover and want to spend a full day exploring the Louvre, the ship’s one-hour walking tour will be a disappointment, no matter how great it is. Sometimes it’s smarter to book an independent tour or go as you please for the day.

Interacting with your guides

Your cruise director is an expert on your itinerary and the areas you’ll visit, so don’t be shy about asking questions when you’re aboard. Also, take advantage of the cruise tour guides in each destination. They’re local experts and the perfect people to ask where the best lunch spot is, how to find shops with locally-made souvenirs, or where to hang out with the locals.

Allow for some downtime

While it’s natural to want to take advantage of the included activities to get the best value from your river cruise, it can be a mistake to book up every minute of each day with excursions. The Roster of New 2024 River Ships

This year, travel advisors will find a generous number of new river ships plying the waterways of Europe, Colombia, the U.S. East Coast and Egypt. Here’s a look at the new ships, which offer a diverse array of styles, itineraries and experiences that are sure to appeal to a wide range of clients.

AMAWATERWAYS

The line will begin operating the 60-guest AmaMagdalena in January 2025 on the Magdalena River in Colombia, sailing between Cartagena and Barranquilla on two seven-night itineraries. A sister ship, AmaMelodia, will join in June 2025. AmaWaterways also is launching a second ship in Egypt on the Nile River. The 82-passenger AmaLilia will operate 11-night “Secrets of Egypt & the Nile itineraries.” For more on AmaWaterways, turn to page 14.

AMADEUS RIVER CRUISES

The company is unveiling a new generation of vessels featuring technical innovations that it said will set new environmental standards for river cruising with the introduction of Amadeus Nova on Rhine and Danube river itineraries in spring 2024. “The Amadeus Nova is our response to the question of whether you can combine ship comfort with environmental awareness,” said Amadeus Founder Wolfgang Lüftner. The four-deck vessel will be equipped with 12 balcony suites and 67 outside cabins, most of which will boast panoramic windows; wind-protected lounge areas; a café; a heated pool; and a sundeck.

AMERICAN CRUISE LINES

The company, whose vessels solely ply U.S. ports and rivers, will unveil two new Coastal Cats – American Liberty and American Legend – in August and November, respectively. The two ships are the line’s third and fourth Coastal Cats vessels, joining American Eagle and American Glory, which debuted in 2023. The four vessels are deployed on a vast selection of exclusive East Coast itineraries, including the new “Florida Gulf Coast & Keys” sailing roundtrip from St. Petersburg and the “Yankee Seaports” cruise between New York City and Boston. Other itineraries include “Historic South & Golden Isles” sailings between Charleston, S.C. and Amelia Island, Fla., and New England summer voyages.

AVALON WATERWAYS

As press time, the line was set to debut its first river ship offering itineraries on Portugal’s Douro River in April. The new Avalon Alegria will sail on an eight day “Vida Portugal: Vineyards & Villages” itinerary roundtrip from Porto. The vessel, which is Avalon’s 15th European Suite Ship, features 200-square-foot Panorama Suites on two full decks and open-air balconies and beds facing the views. In all, Avalon Alegria will boast 14 Deluxe Staterooms and 37 Panorama Suites. Alegria will also have a pool on the Sky Deck, where guests can take in the stunning scenery.

RIVIERA RIVER CRUISES

Due to increased demand, the company is introducing the 118-passenger MS Porto Mirante, which will offer 10 departures on a new itinerary, the eight-day “Highlights of the Douro Valley and Salamanca” from July to October. The ship will boast 59 cabins, an atrium bar and lounge with floor-to-ceiling windows, a restaurant, a fitness center and a sun deck with a sky lounge bar and splash pool. MS Port Mirante will join MS Douro Elegance and MS Douro Splendour, which ply the waters of the Douro, Porto and Salamanca rivers.

RIVERSIDE LUXURY CRUISES

The line, which operates three of the former Crystal river ships, debuted Riverside Debussy on a five-night cruise from Brussels to Amsterdam on March 23. The ship’s portfolio of sailings include three to seven-night itineraries on the Rhine, Danube and Main rivers, which can be combined into longer cruises, with late or overnight calls in a range of European cities. Riverside Dubussy carries 110 guests in 55 suites and has four gourmet restaurants and seven dining options in all, the Palm Court, the Vista Lounge, a spa and a fitness center. Riverside Mozart entered service in May 2023 and Riverside Ravel in August 2023.

UNIWORLD BOUTIQUE RIVER CRUISES

In March, the luxury line unveiled the S.S. Victoria on a “Holland & Belgium Tulip Time” itinerary. The ship, which carries 110 guests and formerly sailed in the Crystal fleet as Crystal Bach, will also offer an eight-day “Castles Along the Rhine” cruise from Basel to Amsterdam, a 10-day “Magnificent Moselle and Rhine” sailing roundtrip from Frankfurt and an eight-day “Belgium Holiday Markets” voyage roundtrip from Brussels, which will put the spotlight on both renowned and lesser-known Christmas markets. In 2025, Uniworld is scheduled to introduce the S.S. Elisabeth, which formerly sailed as Crystal Mahler.

The company is adding to its Egypt river fleet this year, with the introduction of the 82-passenger Viking Hathor. The vessel will sail on the 12-day “Pharaohs & Pyramids” itinerary, which includes a three-night stay at a first-class hotel in Cairo. Guests then fl y to Luxor to explore the Temple of Luxor and Karnak prior to boarding Viking Hathor for an eight-day Nile cruise, followed by a flight back to Cairo for an overnight stay. Viking Hathor is an identical sister ship to Viking Osiris and Viking Aton and, which debuted in 2022 and 2023, respectively. The Egypt fleet also includes Viking Ra and MS Antares. In 2005, Viking will add a sixth ship, Viking Sobek.

VIVA CRUISES

In September, VIVA Enjoy will make its debut on a 12-night itinerary from Frankfurt to Vienna, with calls at Wertheim, Wurzburg, Nuremberg, Passau and Linz. Following its inaugural cruise, the ship will set sail on eight-day “Charming Danube” itineraries roundtrip from Vienna, followed by Advent and Christmas voyages. VIVA Enjoy has 95 cabins including eight suites and three restaurants. In all, VIVA Cruises will offer 85 different itineraries and upward of 280 sailings on eight vessels. VIVA Enjoy’s debut follows the introduction of VIVA One and VIVA Two in 2022 and 2023, respectively.

Planning for Christmas in July might seem like a little much, but hear us out—we have a valid reason.

Hallmark Channel just announced the ultimate immersive Christmas experience, and it involves a cruise ship . In a partnership with festivals-at-sea company Sixthman, Hallmark Channel is bringing Christmas fans on the Hallmark Channel Christmas Cruise right before the much-anticipated jollyful holidays in 2024.

"We hear time and time again that people want to immerse themselves in the world of Hallmark Channel Christmas movies and this venture is sure to bring our brand to life in a new, captivating way," Hallmark Media's Vice President of Consumer Products, Natalie Vandergast, said in a statement. "We are delighted to count down to Christmas 2024 aboard an adventure that will allow our stars and enthusiastic fanbase alike to create everlasting memories together at sea."

Don't worry though, you won't suffer in the cold! The four-day cruise will sail from Miami to Nassau, Bahamas from November 5 through November 9, 2024, where guests will get the chance to experience Christmas at the beach while getting a good tan at the same time.

Curious what the trip will be like? Picture Christmas crafts, interactive holiday-themed activities, and even a world premiere of the new Hallmark Channel movie Countdown to Christmas at the ship's very own theater. And that's not even all—during the trip, passengers will get to witness a tree lightning ceremony, and those looking to hone their cooking skills will be able to participate in Christmas cookie decorating sessions as well as wine tastings to wash it all down. And don't forget to bring your ugly sweaters aboard—there will be a contest for that, too.
