The best places to visit at Christmas

Edinburgh, Scotland

1.  Edinburgh, Scotland

Best for: A  festive city break

Edinburgh ’s centuries-old network of spiralling hills, cobbled streets and Hogwarts-like architecture is magical at the best of times – but it’s at Christmas when it truly comes alive. Sprawling along the picturesque East and West Princes Street Gardens, the world-famous Edinburgh Christmas Market  enchants visitors from mid-November until early January each year with its local crafts, warming gluhwein and joyous fairground rides, while Scotland’s most popular visitor attraction – Edinburgh Castle – is also lit up as part of the Castle of Light event. The city’s most famous Christmas light display is also over at George Street; more than a million lights also twinkle at Edinburgh Royal Botanic Gardens .

Harry Potter Warner Bros Studio, Hertfordshire, England

2.  Harry Potter Warner Bros Studio, Hertfordshire, England

Best for:  Cinephiles

Is actual Hogwarts is on your list this Christmas? Across November and December, the  Warner Bros Studio and Hogwarts   will be transformed into a wintry wonderland, where real-life flying witches soar above in the Great Hall and a Christmas banquet with all the trimmings is laid out below. Popular sets like the common room and Diagon Alley will also be kitted out for the festivities, and the Forbidden Forest will be under a blanket of snow; on your way round you’ll also learn the filming secrets of the Harry Potter films. Who knows, you may even pick up some of Harry’s famed spells yourself.

Birmingham, England

3.  Birmingham, England

Best for: A  German experience on UK soil

The UK’s second city welcomes in excess of 5.5 million visitors to its annual Frankfurt Christmas Market  – the largest of its kind outside of Germany and Austria. Stretching the length of New Street and spilling through Victoria Square and Centenary Square, the world-famous market in Birmingham is renowned for its ice cold stein litre beers, footlong bratwursts with comical udder-like sauce receptacles and, in more recent years, a pop-up indoor ice rink beside the city’s striking library. Boisterous festive singalongs often occur outside the city’s grand Council House on weekends, and be sure to keep an eye out for Chris the singing Moose while you’re there; he’s stuff of local legend. Prost!

London, England

4.  London, England

Best for:  Shopaholics

Where do we begin with Christmas in England and the UK’s buzzy capital? From the unrivalled Bavarian Village, family-friendly fairground rides and Zippo’s famous festive circus show at Winter Wonderland in Hyde Park , to some of the world’s most iconic Christmas lights, department stores and Santa’s grottos dotted along Oxford Street, London really is the place to be in the festive season. Throw in a quintessentially British pantomime on the West End, or a Christmas cruise along the River Thames , and you’re on to a winner.

Blenheim Palace, Oxfordshire, England

5.  Blenheim Palace, Oxfordshire, England

Best for:  History buffs

England’s only non-royal residence to hold a palatial title sits pretty in 2,100 acres of parkland and formal gardens; Sir Winston Churchill was even born here. His family still own the property, which is now a Unesco World Heritage Site, and it remains a popular year-round attraction. Perhaps none more so at Christmas, where dozens of wooden chalets selling crafted wares and tasty treats take over The Great Court, and, new for 2023, an after-dark illuminated light trail with its eight-metre sphere and twinkling tunnels provide perfect photo opportunities. Advance booking for Blenheim Palace is essential.

Cardiff, Wales

6.  Cardiff, Wales

Best for:  Family-friendly fun

Cardiff at Christmas has a nice ring to it, doesn’t it? Each festive season the Welsh capital hosts its very own Winter Wonderland  at the iconic Cardiff Castle , with a weatherproof ice rink, extensive funfair and Santa’s grotto; there’s an alpine ski-lodge bar and an ice bar for the adults too. Meanwhile, the adjoining Bute Park is home to the most popular Christmas light trail outside of London, and the bespoke jewellery, intricate trinkets and glorious street food on offer at Cardiff Christmas Market are certainly worth extending your trip for. Make this Christmas a Welsh one.

Hillsborough Castle and Gardens, County Down, Northern Ireland

7.  Hillsborough Castle and Gardens, County Down, Northern Ireland

Best for:  Royal Family fans

Hillsborough Castle, Northern Ireland’s royal residence, boasts 100 acres of beautiful gardens, including the gorgeous Georgian country house where members of the Royal Family regularly visit and stay. At Christmas, Hillsborough turns to festive markets and after dark light shows, including Walking With The Snowman ;  a celebration of the famed Raymond Briggs animation brings a light trail and a dozen large snowman sculptures for the kids to find. Other events include a Christmas wreath making workshop using natural materials found around the grounds, and a market selling local gifts and delicacies.

Christmas at Castle Howard, York, England

8.  Christmas at Castle Howard, York, England

Best for:  Those who don’t wish to grow up!

Tinkerbell has sprinkled her fairy dust at Castle Howard this Christmas and brought an enchanting festive Neverland to York! There’s plenty on offer here, including the Peter Pan-themed Main House where projections, installations and a few surprises await, and for afters be sure to sample toasted marshmallows in the twinkly Courtyard? The kids will also love meeting Father Christmas himself.

Manchester, England

9.  Manchester, England

Best for: L ight display fanatics

Manchester ’s varied festive offering gives it the north west’s Christmas crown. From the makers behind Christmas at Kew, Christmas at Heaton Park  returns this year with an entrancing after dark strobe and laser light show and funfair, while in the city centre the wooden craft and food huts of the popular Christmas Market return to St Ann’s Square – celebrating its 25th year. Visit on Sundays for free live family-friendly entertainment. The ice rink is also back in Cathedral Square, but for something a little different, why not check out a candlelight concert at The Stoller Hall?

The Cairngorm Reindeer Herd, The Cairngorms, Scotland

10.  The Cairngorm Reindeer Herd, The Cairngorms, Scotland

Best for:  Families and kids

Did you know there’s a free-ranging reindeer herd in the UK? Introduced to the Scottish hills in 1952 by Mikel Utsi and his wife Dr. Ethel Lindgren from Swedish Lapland, the herd has thrived in what is Britain’s only subarctic wilderness and has now grown to around 150 in size. Guided tours to meet the herd depart near Glenmore in the Cairngorms and are particularly special from October/November onwards when there’s fresh snow to crunch on. It’s a 30-40 minute walk to meet the Cairngorm reindeer , and you'll learn their names and get the opportunity to feed one or two. Tours are weather-permitting and advance booking in the winter months is essential.

London’s main  Christmas tree stands in Trafalgar Square , and has a charming history. It’s presented as a gift each year by the Norwegian city of Oslo in return for British support during the Second World War and has appeared in the square every year since 1947. It’s absolutely enormous and is something of a Christmas focal point just next to London’s shopping centres. On the first Thursday in December there’s a grand tree lighting ceremony which is extremely popular. This is the place to come to hear traditional Christmas carols, which are often sung by choirs gathered around the tree itself.

Why Should You Visit the UK for Christmas?

The United Kingdom is a fantastic place to spend Christmas. One of my favorite trips of all time was a week in London over the Thanksgiving holiday. I was able to stretch my meager vacation leave further and found myself wandering open stretches in Westminster Abbey without the massive summer crowds.

Whether you’re looking for Christmas markets, dazzling light displays, or a quaint winter village, there’s a place in the UK just waiting for your visit.

Where Should You Go on a Christmas Trip in the UK?

You’ll find holiday events and decorations all over the UK, even in tiny villages. However, if you’re looking to make the most of the season in one place, look to visit one of these top four Christmas spots:

I have a whole post dedicated to why you should visit Edinburgh in December , and the seasonal finds are a major part of that. Scotland can be dark and cold in the winter, but the dazzling Christmas market and layers of lights turn even this spookiest city into a warm and inviting holiday wonderland.

Edinburgh Castle December

Grab a cup of mulled wine and enjoy a charmed walk through the Christmas market and take in the many light displays around the city. When you feel too chilled to continue on, pop into a pub or one of Edinburgh’s many beautiful bookshops. Consider sticking around for Hogmanay for a once in a lifetime new year experience.

See the full guide to Edinburgh in December for tips on where to stay near all the holiday action !

The ancient Roman baths in Bath, England are the most famous draw to this lovely city on the southern edge of the Cotswolds. Visiting Bath is a good idea any time of year, though, and the Christmas decorations here only add to the daily charm.

Roman Baths winter

The Christmas market is set up in the historic quarter outside Bath Abbey. The towering gothic spires of the abbey make for a gorgeous backdrop while you wander through the market.

When you’re done shopping, head over to Royal Victoria Park for ice skating just across from the Royal Crescent. There’s a covered bar area serving food and holiday drinks if you’d rather take in the scenery while others exert themselves.

Just outside Bath is your opportunity to see Christmas lights in a truly unique environment. Wookey Hole Caves puts on a full winter wonderland underground, including over 100,000 lights. Santa’s North Pole Grotto will delight the kids in your group.

Check out my guide to visiting Bath for more about how to get here and places to stay !

Located in the north of England, York brings plenty of British Christmas enchantment. Every year the city hosts Yorkshire’s Winter Wonderland, a massive seasonal festival. Christmas market stalls can be found here, as well as funfair rides, Santa’s Grotto, and a massive ice skating rink.

Don’t miss a visit to the Shambles, York’s medieval shopping street with one of a kind shops and cozy cafes. The window displays are delightful and the whole area will make you feel as though you’ve stepped back in time.

If you’d like to spend a few days in York, or at least stay overnight, check out the beautiful Grays Court Hotel , with views of the city’s medieval walls and close proximity to the city centre.

Maybe I’m biased because I live near London, but I’ve yet to find a big city more delightful at Christmas time. Seasonal magic pops up all over, whether you want to stroll a Christmas market along the Thames, ice skate in a palace courtyard, or buy drinks on a carousel in the middle of a funfair. Head to the South Bank Christmas Market, Somerset House, and Hyde Park Winter Wonderland for those experiences.

Of course, one of the biggest draws are the over the top Christmas light displays that take over London roads like Regent Street. Heading out for an after dark walk is my favorite way to experience this, but you can also book a bus tour or even a private taxi tour if you have less mobile folks or young kids in your travel group. There’s even a bus tour that serves treats and tea while you take in the lights! Head to GetYourGuide for all the best guided tour options.

The Best Christmas in the UK Experiences

Ready to start planning your Christmas trip in the UK? Here are the top enchanting experiences you will definitely want to try out that go beyond the basics.

Christmas light trails

Many historic sites and gardens across the UK go all out with their seasonal light displays. These are usually ticketed events and well worth booking in advance to avoid disappointment. It’s common to find treats like hot chocolate and mulled wine to sip as you take in the lights, and bonfires for toasting marshmallows at the end of the trail.

Bigger gardens sometimes go for my favorite display, fields of fire pots. It’s hard to explain how impressive they are, and perhaps some of this comes down to the novelty since I’d never see them back in fire hazard California. There’s something warm, comforting, and wonderfully wild about these displays.

christmas travel uk

The biggest and perhaps most popular spot to find a lights trail in the UK is Kew Gardens near London. If Disney had a hand in Christmas trails, this is probably what they’d put together. The event sells out each year, so definitely book tickets as soon as you know your available dates.

Christmas markets

Every UK city will have at least one Christmas market where you can peruse gifts and buy tasty treats. Larger cities like London will have many markets dotted around, but even smaller villages usually get in on this offering.

Wherever you’re visiting, you’ll encounter fewer crowds by heading to the market during the week and earlier in the day. Things can get busy at night, though you have all the lights to help keep up the cheer.

Ice skating

Ice rinks are a common sight from November to January. This is an iconic winter pastime, and even non-skaters can enjoy the ambience from the side of the rink. Stands selling festive drinks are readily available while you watch or to warm up after your skating session. My favorite skating rinks are:

  • Skate at Somerset House . Located in a stunning courtyard in London, this is a place I never miss visiting each winter.
  • Hampton Court Palace . Just outside London and easily reachable by train, gaze at the iconic palace and the Thames river as you circle around.
  • George Street . Located in Edinburgh’s New Town, this rink has a cover over it so you can skate even if the weather isn’t cooperating with your plans.
  • Glide at Battersea . London’s newest rink is actually three connected together with an adjacent chalet and Christmas market to enjoy before or after your skate.

Holiday festivals and events

Beyond Christmas markets and light trails, you can also find a wealth of holiday inspired events across the UK. Here are a few favorites to add to your schedule, from South to North:

  • Hyde Park Winter Wonderland in London. This is one of the most famous events among a sea of London options. The festival sprawls across a wide corner of Hyde Park and includes an ice sculpture walk-through, Bavarian village, Christmas market, and lots of fun fair events. Don’t miss the slow moving carousel that’s also a bar.
  • Hogwarts in the Snow at Warner Bros. Studio near London. I’m a little torn on this one because the studio tour is kind of ridiculously priced and requires Disney levels of advance booking. However, they really do go all out to dress up the sets for a wizard-approved holiday season. If you miss getting this booked, go for a Harry Potter themed walking tour in London for an excellent back up plan.
  • Cardiff’s Winter Wonderland in Wales. The capital city of Wales transforms into a winter wonderland with ice skating, an ice bar, Christmas market stalls, and a fun fair. The fun occurs in two locations in the heart of the city and next to the iconic Cardiff Castle.
  • Polar Express in the Yorkshire Dales . If you’re visiting with young children, don’t miss this chance to live out the excitement of the Polar Express as you travel the Wensleydale Railway in Yorkshire. The experience comes with a chance to visit with Santa in a truly unique setting.
  • Edinburgh’s Christmas . The annual Christmas event in Edinburgh takes place across several locations in the heart of the city. Whether you join in for Santa’s Stories in St Andrew’s Square or shop your way through the Christmas market in the shadow of Edinburgh Castle, you’ll find plenty of cheer to keep you busy.

Castles at Christmas

What would a trip to the UK be without a visit to a castle or palace? These historic sites are always a treat, but many really get into the holiday spirit. Expect holiday lights, trees, and festivals to add to your experience. Here are a few of my favorite castles and palaces for winter visits:

  • Windsor Castle . Fans of the Royal family will enjoy this visit any time of year, but they really go all out with Christmas decorations. Don’t miss the giant tree in St. George’s Hall.
  • Hampton Court Palace . Henry VIII once celebrated here, and the sprawling palace is an attraction I recommend for anyone visiting the London area. During the winter season the palace comes alive with a lights trail, ice skating, and seasonal events.
  • Hever Castle . Once the childhood home of Anne Boleyn, this countryside castle near London is picture perfect. At Christmas, a small market and funfair sets up just beyond the double-moated castle.
  • Blenheim Palace . This sprawling beauty is the perfect addition to your Cotswolds Christmas. Decorations are extensive indoors and out, with a lights trail illuminating the palace gardens and a Christmas market set up in the courtyard.
  • Bamburgh Castle . This castle in the north of England is set in a truly idyllic setting right on the coast. At Christmas, you can expect expansive decorations, and special events like wreath making classes and a chance to visit Santa in the castle halls.

christmas travel uk

If you’re staying in London, you can take a day trip to some of these castles by train , saving yourself from driving stress.

Holiday food and drinks

While you’re visiting in the festive season, don’t forget to try out the seasonal food and drink options! Heading to the pub for a Sunday roast goes great this time of year, when the hearty food can warm you before you head back out on adventures.

Two things I always indulge in for Christmas time are mulled wine and mince pies. Mulled wine is made from red wine infused with spices, citrus, and a hint of sweetness. It is served warm and smells like Christmas in a cup. You’ll find this at most holiday events and at Christmas markets.

Mince pies are small, sweet pastries that pop up all over at Christmas time. I would have loved Toppings bookstore in Edinburgh anyway, but they really won my heart when an employee started passing out mince pies to browsing customers. A mince pie often resembles a tiny pie and is filled with apples, dried fruits, and mixed spices. British families often leave out a mince pie for Santa, along with a nip of brandy to help him on his way.

Christmas carols

The UK is dotted with picturesque churches and cathedrals. If you’ve ever wanted to experience the acoustics of these places, look for carol services. Probably the most famous option is to visit Canterbury Cathedral, although St. Pauls in London and Greyfriars Kirk in Edinburgh both offer Christmas Eve carol services as well.

For a more secular experience, look to Royal Albert Hall in London for their annual Christmas carol productions.

British pantomime and theatre performances

Pantomime shows, usually advertised as “panto” are a unique and beloved feature of the holiday season. They typically take on a fairytale or other well-known story and add a heaping dash of comedy and audience interaction. Don’t be surprised when your expectations of British reserve are shattered here. It’s all a bit of silly fun and a great outing for all ages.

For the most traditional Christmas theatre outing, head to see The Nutcracker at Royal Opera Hall. The unforgettable setting and tremendously talented performers will have sugar plums dancing in your head all evening.

Head over to my guide to London for theatre lovers for even more dramatic ideas!

3 Things You Need to Know to Plan a Christmas Trip in the UK

Christmas closures.

If you are planning to visit the UK over Christmas, be aware that many tourist sights, shops, and restaurants will be closed on Christmas Day and Boxing Day (the 26th). Short hours and closings are also extremely common on Christmas Eve. Plan to spend these days with your travel companions on a walk or cozied up in your lodging.

Daylight hours

It gets dark early during the winter in the UK. The winter solstice usually arrives just before Christmas, bringing sunset just before 4pm in southern England and more like 3:30pm in Scotland. This can be jarring if you’re not accustomed to shorter days, but gives even more time for you to explore Christmas lights and decorations.

Christmas weather in the UK

December brings plenty of cold and potentially damp days to the UK. Now is the time to embrace the theory that there are no bad weather days, only bad clothes. Layer your clothing so that you can leave some items at coat check when you’re going to be indoors at an event or museum. Quilted coats and beanie caps are your friends to stay cozy while you’re out exploring.

Common Questions about Christmas Travel in the UK

When can you find christmas lights in the uk.

While the US at least tries to put off going into full Christmas mode until after Thanksgiving, here it is pretty much a Christmas free-for-all from early November. Cities start putting up their light displays by the second week of November, and usually leave them up well into January. It gets dark early here in the winter, so no one is in a rush to let go of the holiday spirit.

Where can you find snow for Christmas in the UK?

The UK has a fairly temperate climate, so snow is not guaranteed across the country. If you’re dreaming of a white Christmas, set your sights on the Highlands in Scotland. The Cairngorns National Park gets enough snow for skiing and other winter sports.

Where can you meet Santa in the UK?

Santa’s grottos, meeting spots for Father Christmas to greet children, are easily found at most Christmas events and also at some markets. Larger department stores also sometimes set up a Santa’s grotto for the lead up to Christmas.

Check out where you want to visit Santa in advance because many require a booking that will set aside your time to visit with Santa. Unlike many Santa visits in the US, it’s common for Santa’s elves to make sure children leave with a small gift – often a wrapped book.

How To Spend Christmas in London

View of Christmas Decs at a market, London, England, UK

We have highlighted the best holiday activities and attractions in London during the festive season. However, for visitors planning to celebrate Christmas in London – actually  December 25 – we have a few more holiday tips so that you can best plan your trip.

Christmas Eve London

In London, December 24 is not a Bank Holiday – meaning, most things are open (but may close early)…and it’s actually quite busy. While some Londoners are preparing for the festivities of the following day, many more are out celebrating with family and friends.

Some of the top things to do in London on Christmas Eve are ice skating, attending a show, last-minute Christmas shopping and drinking mulled wine at one of the Christmas markets. Christmas concerts and midnight mass are two other top Christmas Eve events in London.

Christmas Day London

The Best London Christmas Lights, England, UK

Christmas Day in London is the quietest day of the year. Most stores and restaurants are closed – and the busy Transport for London network (Tube, Buses, Trains and Trams) all comes to a halt.

With nearly empty streets, it can be a great opportunity to embark on a Self-Guided Walking Tour of London or to rent a bike to pedal around. Additionally, some tourist services – like Thames River Cruises and Hop On Hop Off London Buses are running.

If the weather is agreeable, parks are some of the best places to go on Christmas Day in London. Swing by The Serpentine Lake in Hyde Park on Christmas morning to watch the annual Serpentine Swimming Club race for the Peter Pan Cup or take a walk through Kensington Gardens. At dusk, wander down some of the classic London lanes lit with Christmas lights.

Attending a Christmas service at one of the city’s finest churches – like Westminster Abbey, St. Paul’s Cathedral or St. Martin-in-the-Fields – is another way to spend Christmas Day in London.

Christmas Dinners London

While most restaurants are closed on Christmas Day in London, there are a few exceptions. Some eateries and pubs are open for either lunch or dinner – and several hotels offer special London Christmas meals. In addition to the set menus for dinner, select hotels and restaurants host holiday brunch and Afternoon Tea on Christmas Day.

Travelers looking for the Best Christmas Dinner in London – or any meal out on December 25 – will need to make reservations far in advance!

For an alternative Christmas meal in London, visitors can go to Chinatown, where many restaurants are open on December 25. Another option is Beigel Bake on Brick Lane, a small deli that cranks out meaty sandwiches and is open 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. Hotel bars might be a good last-minute option for a drink or light bite to eat for travelers who aren’t able to get a reservation in advance.

Boxing Day Events London

Battersea PowerStation Shopping Mall, Christmas, London

Boxing Day – the day after Christmas, December 26 – is a national holiday in London, England. However, unlike London Christmas Day, on Boxing Day almost all the stores, restaurants, holiday markets, ice skating rinks, museums, theaters and tourist attractions are open.

Typically, public transit is back up and running, albeit on a reduced schedule (but it’s always good to check before making any plans).

One of the best things to do in London on Boxing Day is to go shopping. Many retailers discount items the day after Christmas, so it a great time to score deals.

Watching football (or rather, soccer) is a Boxing Day tradition – as is cozying up in a British pub. Indulging in a boozy Boxing Day Brunch – where many restaurants offer bottomless drinks – is a fun way to spend the leisurely day, as well.

New Year’s Eve in London

London loves to Celebrate New Year’s Eve – and the biggest event is the London New Year’s Eve Fireworks over the River Thames. Tickets are required for the best spots (we particularly like the view from Westminster Bridge), but NYE Thames River cruises offer a unique vantage point and heaps of onboard fun!

Throughout London, restaurants and clubs host parties – from elegant affairs to all night raves. Another excellent way to spend New Year’s in London is at the theater.

London New Year’s Day

Balloons at the New Years Day Parade, London, England, UK

New Year’s Day in London is a national holiday, and the biggest celebration is the London New Year Day Parade. A tradition that has been going strong since 1987, the January 1 London parade is free to attend, but get there early!

New Year’s Day is also one of the last days to enjoy many of the festive holiday London markets, Christmas time performances and illuminated Christmas trees.

Top Travel Tips for Your Christmas London Trip

Santa waiting to cross the street, London at Christmas

Now that you know what to do in London over Christmas, we have a few final travel tips.

Christmas in London Weather

Winter conditions are typically a concern for holiday travelers – and London at Christmas weather will certainly keep you guessing.

Overall, winters in London tend to be mild. Skies are overcast, days are short and precipitation (typically in the form of rain, but sometimes snow) is often predicted. Bottom line, be prepared!

Christmas Transport London

London Xmas Decs on a motorbike, England, UK

London has a robust public transportation network that makes it easy for travelers to get around. That said, December is often a time for transport strikes, so it’s best to stay up to date with any disruptions during your trip.

As we already mentioned, all London public transport is closed on Christmas Day. Want to ride the London Tube Christmas Day? It’s closed. Buses, Overground Trains and London Trams are also parked for the day.

Travelers who want to do a little sightseeing on December 25 can find some London Tourist Christmas Day Buses running. To get around on Christmas Day, we recommend walking, cycling or booking an Uber or FreeNow Taxi.

Where To Stay in London for Christmas

Animal Light Displays, Riverside Christmas Market, London, England, UK

London is sprawling metropolis with thousands of hotels in a range of prices. Deciding where to stay for your London holiday trip can be a big conundrum – but it will likely come down to budget, desired amenities and preferred location.

A room at London’s poshest hotels that are decadently dressed up for the holidays – like The Ritz and The Connaught – will cost upwards of $1,500 per night. Other luxury hotels with fabulous holiday décor – such as The Ned and The Landmark – fetch more than $500 per night.

Budget-conscious travelers, however, can find more affordable hotels in the $150 per night range.

Our best advice for where to stay in London at Christmas is to first search for a hotel within your budget, then choose a hotel based on its location. The accommodation does not need to be city center (as London Christmas attractions are located from one end to the other), but it is best to be close to a Tube station to make getting around easy.

Additionally, popular places to stay in London at Christmas get booked well in advance, so plan ahead and book early .

Christmas Breaks in England

Nottingham is ideal for a Christmas city break in the UK, with good transport links from the rest of the country and plenty of hotel options ranging in price from budget to luxury. It is a great Christmas getaway destination for couples or families. There are many things to do in Nottingham especially around Christmas time. Visit the largest event in the East Midlands at Nottingham’s annual winter wonderland in the Market Square most of which is free, and where you can listen to the live entertainment, take part in the outdoor ice-skating or tobogganing and go on colourful fairground rides.

For a romantic date night idea in Nottingham there is also an Alpine ice bar where you can enjoy a variety of drinks served in real ice glasses. Wrap up warm though because you are surrounded by specially designed ice sculptures kept at sub-zero temperatures. Prices start at £18.50 for adults and include fur jackets and gloves.

If you are looking for a European Christmas vibe, visit the Christmas market with over 70 traditional, Bavarian-style stalls selling a variety of gifts and hand-crafted goods, as well as seasonal treats. It is the ideal place to pick up some last-minute gifts. Open daily from 10am-10pm on weekdays and until 11pm on the weekend starting mid-November right up until New Year’s Eve.

Start Point Lighthouse, Devon

Recommended by Suzanne of Meandering Wild

Start Point Lighthouse is located on the south coast of Devon just a short distance from Salcombe and Dartmouth.  As with any lighthouse it is wild, remote and exposed and this makes it the perfect place to have a Christmas getaway. Staying in a lighthouse is a unique experience that is enhanced by winter weather, being cosy indoors while the weather does its thing outside is a fantastic magical feeling.

Start Point Lighthouse is located on the south-West Coast Path and walking along this coastline is the perfect way to pass the days around Christmas.  The lighthouse keepers’ cottages make a lovely base for exploring this coastline.  Being self-catering you can have your own festive feast or eat out in Salcombe or one of the nearby small pubs.

Salcombe is a small coastal village with a lovely Christmas atmosphere and is 16 miles from Start Point, although the narrow lanes make the journey longer than you would expect. Fore Street, the main street has festive lights and there is a tree on White strand overlooking the harbour where the ferry departs for South Sands.

All of the pubs and shops have a festive feel and the atmosphere is welcoming. If you enjoy gin, then a visit to the Salcombe gin distillery is essential to make your own festive gin to enjoy in front of the fire at the lighthouse.

Check availability and book your stay at the keepers cottage here . Minimum stay is 2 nights and prices start from £649 for up to 5 guests and 2 dogs.

Top hotel pick nearby: Harbour Hotel, Salcombe. Prices start from £179 per night. Check availability and book here.

Must do activity: Tour the lighthouse and walk the coastal paths.

Liverpool is the perfect destination for a Christmas break, this city is endlessly cool, filled with music, budget friendly and it’s easy to get to. Liverpool has two cathedrals, both have lots of events on at Christmas, so it’s worth trying to catch a Carol concert.

The street between the Cathedrals is delightfully called Hope Street and has some good restaurants and hotels on it. A top recommendation for somewhere to stay is Hotel Indigo – a unique and exciting location with impeccably clean rooms and one of the best hotel breakfasts I’ve had.

Most years Liverpool has a German style Christmas Market outside St George’s Hall which is worth a visit. Like all cities, Liverpool has a lovely Christmas vibe and a stroll down Matthew Street is a must, as is a visit to the Beatles Cavern Club. If you are lucky, you will be able to catch some live music in the Cavern, or one of the many bars dotted along the street and buskers will be singing Christmas Carols.

For Christmas shopping you must go to Liverpool One, you could easily finish your Christmas shopping in an afternoon here. Liverpool is very accessible, and most places are within walking distance, or just a short taxi ride away.

For a festive Christmas drink visit Berry and Rye, a secret and very delightful Gin and Whisky bar. Bang on the door, cross your fingers, hope they have room for you and enjoy a Christmas cocktail or two!

There are also lots of great day trips from Liverpool if you get tired of the festivities during your stay.

Top hotel pick: Hotel Indigo, Liverpool. Prices start from £162 per night. Check availability and book here.

Must do activity: Visit the Cavern Club and watch a band.

Stratford-upon-avon

Another romantic destination for a Christmas break UK is Stratford upon Avon, the birthplace of William Shakespeare. There are lots of great things to do in Stratford upon Avon for couples all year round, but a must is a visit to Magic Alley which has festive themed events on.

No visit to Stratford would be complete without checking out Shakespeare’s birthplace, where he lived with his family and final resting place. The best way to experience this is on a walking tour around the town, so wrap up warm and find out everything there is to know about Shakespeare.

If you don’t fancy a walking tour or the weather is bad then the next best way to explore the town is a hop-on hop-off bus tour . Where you can explore the town with an audio tour from the comfort of a double decker bus.

At Christmas time in Stratford you can enjoy the Victorian Christmas market which usually takes place on the first weekend in December and fills all the main streets of the town. It is one of the UKs best Victorian Christmas markets and draws hundreds of visitors each year.

What better time to visit the theatre than on a romantic Christmas break, you can choose to see a Shakespeare play at the Royal Shakespeare Theatre or a fun filled Christmas pantomime at the Stratford Play House.

Top hotel pick: Macdonald Alveston Manor Hotel & Spa. Price start from £139 per night. Check availability and book here.

Must do activity: Visit Shakespeares birthplace.

Of all the destinations in the UK for a festive getaway, surely Winchester has to be top of the list. It might be a relatively small city, but its Christmas market is mighty. It has been placed in Europe’s top 15 Christmas markets, and in 2019 was voted the UK’s number one.

Winchester Christmas Market is visited by almost half a million people per year. Over 100 wooden chalets are styled like those featured at the famous German Christmas markets, and the backdrop is simply stunning – the market is held in Winchester’s historic Cathedral Close.

At the centre of it all is an outdoor ice rink. There is a British Crafts Village showcasing the finest handmade goods, and there is also an appealing nativity scene here, providing unique Christmas photo opportunities.

Each stall holder has been carefully selected because they offer unusual, quirky and top-quality gifts, decorations, food or drinks for sale. There are various crafts people, including painters, glass makers, jewellers and textile artists. When it comes to refreshments, visitors can choose from a wide selection including typically British mince pies and European Glühwein (mulled wine) as well as German bratwurst and stollen (Christollen or Weihnachtsstollen).

There’s no charge to enter the Christmas Market, and it tends to be quieter from Monday to Friday. Winchester has a picturesque and compact city centre, with plenty to do once you’ve ticked everyone off your Christmas shopping list.

Top hotel pick : Winchester Royal Hotel. Prices start from £170 per night. Check availability and book here.

Must do activity: Wander Winchester Christmas market stalls.

One of the best cities in the UK to visit at Christmas has to be Birmingham in the Midlands. There’s plenty to do to suit all ages. The main event is the Frankfurt Christmas market which appears in the centre of the city in Victoria Square every November and stays until just before Christmas day.

The Frankfurt market is the largest authentic German market outside of Austria or Germany and sells artisan gifts, sweet treats and some of the best food you’ll find in the city. It’s open most days between 10am and 9pm. For kids there’s a carousel and talking Christmas Moose head whilst adults will love warming up with a sweet mug of Gluhwein or a huge glass of German beer.

The market started back in 2001 with a modest 25 stalls and has grown to over 80, stretching across the whole of the centre of the city. It’s definitely one of the most popular Christmas events in the Midlands attracting large crowds of revellers in the evenings so it’s best to visit late afternoon if you want a quieter shop.

Over the festive season in Birmingham, you’ll also find a covered ice rink, festively lit big wheel and several Christmas pantos at the many world class theatres which all make great romantic date nights in Birmingham . It really is the perfect place for a UK Christmas mini break.

Top hotel pick : The Grand Hotel, Birmingham. Prices start from £161 per night. Check availability and book here .

Must do activity: Visit the German Christmas market and enjoy the authentic German food and drinks.

The Cotswolds

The Cotswolds are a romantic destination at any time of the year but what better time of the year to visit the magical Cotswolds than on a UK Christmas getaway. For an extra special break we recommend staying in one of the wonderful Castles in the Cotswolds that have been turned into magical hotels perfect for couples on a romantic Christmas break.

When it comes to things to do in the Cotswolds for couples there are plenty of activities. From walking the Cotswolds way to exploring the cute cotswolds villages, or induging in afternoon tea and snuggling up in a cosy pub. Couples will love the festive atmosphere and it is recommended to book accommodation well in advance.

At Christmas time the villages of the Cotswolds come to life with extravagant decorations and magical twinkling lights. Check out the beautifully lit Christmas tree in Bourton-on-the-water that sits in the middle of the river and the authentic Christmas markets of Broadway and Burford that are not to be missed.

Sudeley Castle is also a wonderful Christmas experience on a UK Christmas break in the Cotswolds because it hosts the annual Spectacle of Light event throughout the castle and the grounds. Tickets must be booked in advance to avoid disappointment.

Top hotel pick: Thornbury Castle Hotel. Prices start from £270 per night. Check availability and book here.

Must do activity: Sudeley Castle Spectacle of Light event.

Kent loves Christmas time and is wonderful for a UK Christmas break. The county has lots of events over the festive period, but one town sets the bar above all others. Rochester is the place to visit in Kent if you love Christmas.

Rochester has a long history with Charles Dickins and that plays into a lot of the events the town has on at Christmas. The highlight is the Dickensian Christmas Festival which takes place across a weekend in December. During the festival, you will uncover a feast of Victorian delights, costumed characters, parades and join in with open-air carol concerts.

A Rochester Christmas getaway isn’t all about Charles Dickens though. There are plenty of other events to get into the festive spirit. The Christmas Market is located in the grounds of Rochester Castle, providing a beautiful backdrop for the popular market.

You can’t have a British Christmas without Panto and Rochester delivers every year. You can usually spot at least a few famous faces from the TV as well as a couple you may well have forgotten.

For many, the Christmas period is highlighted by the Mistletoe Ball. Come dressed in your finest Dickensian attire and join in an amazing evening of Victorian dinner and dance. Whatever your fancy at Christmas time, Rochester does a great job in meeting it in style. From Christmas markets to traditional panto there is something for the whole family to enjoy.

Top hotel pick : The Gordon House Hotel, Rochester. Prices start from £75 per night. Check availability and book here.

Must do activity: Visit the Christmas market at Rochester Castle.

Beverley & Hull

Recommended by Nicole of Wellbeing Wherever

Beverly, Yorkshire is one of my favourite places in the world. It is a little British oasis and my home away from home when I am in England. I love hearing the hourly chimes from the Beverley Minster Bell Towers. No matter when you visit, it has a lot to offer, but Christmas makes it even more special and worthwhile to visit.

Beverly is home to one of the largest Christmas Markets in the UK with traditional Victoria markets taking place in December with 3 different market areas – Saturday Market, Wednesday Market and North Bar Within. There are over 120 stalls where you can find food, drinks, stocking stuffers and gifts. You can also find live carolling, pantomime performances, and of course Santa and his reindeer.

The local shopping centre, Flemmingate Centre, also has a variety of Christmas activities. More Christmas Markets can be found in Hull namely at Trinity Market. Many of the hotels in Hull also host parties for Christmas and New Year’s Eve.

My favourite restaurant in Beverley is Lucia Wine Bar & Grill. It has delicious food with friendly staff and a great overall vibe.

I always stay at the Trinity Guest House. The owners are lovely and very helpful with offering money-saving tips and things to see and do around the area. The breakfast here is extensive and offers a lot of selection.

It is also located across the street from the Train station making is convenient for travellers and easy to head into Hull for a day trip – the trip by train takes about 15 minutes. York is about an hour and a half by bus from Beverley. London is roughly 5 hours by train. Book your train tickets here.

Top hotel pick : Trinity Guest House. Prices start from £80 per night. Check availability and book here.

Must do activity: Watch a Christmas carol concert at Beverley Minster.

Peak District

Recommended by Roshni of The Wanderlust Within

One of the best destinations to visit during Christmas is the first  National Park in the UK , the Peak District.

Situated across the Northern counties of Derbyshire, Cheshire, Staffordshire, Yorkshire and Greater Manchester, it is easily accessible from anywhere in the UK.

Throughout the year the Peak District is popular amongst hikers, cyclists and rock climbers, and whilst these activities are still possible during Christmas it is great to explore the seasonal activities too.

There are traditional Christmas markets in Chatsworth, Chesterfield, Bakewell and Buxton. As well as themed Christmas markets, including the medieval artisan market at Haddon Hall, the Victorian Christmas Market in Matlock and the one day Christmas Food Festival in Belper.

On top of the Christmas markets there are also several festive events that shouldn’t be missed, including Christmas carols by candlelight at Treak Cliff Cavern, the Santa canal boat rides in Chesterfield, and the Santa train rides on the Peak Rail from Matlock to Rowsley.

During Christmas one of the best places to stay for backpackers and budget concious travellers is the YHA Castleton Losehill Hall , a recently renovated gothic mansion with a cosy drawing room. The original features of the mansion make it a beautiful setting for enjoying a mug of hot chocolate beside the fireplace.

Top hotel pick: Peak Hotel Castleton. Prices start from £95 per night. Check availability and book here.

Must do activity: Watch the Christmas carols by candlelight at Treak Cliff Cavern.

The traditional fishing village of Hastings Old Town – just an hour and a half from London by train – is the perfect choice for a unique Christmas getaway. On the Sussex coast and in the heart of 1066 country, Hastings is not only the location of the first Norman castle in England, but also a handy jumping off point for exploring nearby Battle, Rye, Winchelsea and Bexhill-on-Sea.

Hastings in the off-season has a quiet, relaxed feel to it, and you won’t need to vie with summer visitors or daytrippers for space on the seafront or promenade. The evenings may draw in early, but the East and West Hills twinkle with the lights of the Old Town, and the many pubs are cosy and inviting. If you’ve left your Christmas shopping a bit late, the quaint, independent shops of George Street are the perfect place to pick up a last-minute gift.

Treat yourself to a tasty sausage roll from Judges bakery, enjoy the open fireplace and own-brewed beer of the First In, Last Out pub. Take the funicular up for a brisk walk in Hastings County Park, or if you’re feeling really brave, join the hardy locals who swim daily year-round on the beach at St Leonard’s.

If you’re after a bit of high culture, you can’t go wrong with a visit to Hastings Contemporary and a meal in the acclaimed attached restaurant, Boatyard. With a miniature railway, Blue Reef Aquarium, and Smugglers Adventure caves to explore, Hastings has something to offer the whole family.

Top hotel pick : Vive Hotel, Hastings. Prices start from £149 per night. Check availability and book here.

Must do activity: Wander the seafront then stop for a drink or two in a cosy pub with a log fire.

In the county of North Yorkshire you’ll find the delightful city of York. Looking like it’s straight from a storybook, York is especially beautiful and atmospheric at Christmas, and one of the many great days out in Yorkshire .

Start your festive visit to York with a stroll through the Shambles, the oldest part of the city and reportedly JK Rowling’s inspiration behind Diagon Alley in Harry Potter. Here, you’ll find lots of independent shops selling books, sweets, Harry Potter merchandise and piping hot coffee and steaming hot chocolate to warm you up.

Next, head straight to the York Christmas Markets, which you’ll find on Parliament Street, St Sampson Square and Coppergate. Fill up a mug of mulled wine and peruse the countless Christmassy stalls selling Christmas Tree decorations, festive trinkets and, a Christmas Market tradition, huge hot dogs! There’s almost always a group singing Christmas carols in the market, which adds even more excitement!

York is really into its Viking history, and especially at Christmas, when Thor’s Tipi is erected on Parliament Street. This cosy bar is filled with furs, wooden benches, and even a fire pit to warm up over! Always a huge hit with tourists and locals alike, Thor’s serve up Christmas-inspired cocktails alongside local ales and stouts. To soak up some Scaninavian style Christmas hygge, Thor’s is the place to go.

Top hotel pick: Moxy York. Prices start from £119 per night. Check availability and book here .

Must do activity: Watch the choir at York Minster.

London is a wonderful place to visit at any time of year, but a Christmas visit to London is extra special.  Visiting London in winter means you have a better chance of enjoying the sights without the usual crowds, as long as you come prepared for the cold wet weather.

You can get all of your Christmas shopping here, whether you prefer the high end designer shops on Regent Street and Oxford Street, the boutiques in Carnaby Street and Camden or Christmas markets – you will find it all in London.

London Winter Wonderland in Hyde Park is not to be missed by anyone visiting the city. You can find plenty of festive cheer dotted around the whole city, in Christmas markets at the South Bank Centre Winter Market or Christmas By The River at London Bridge City.

The city comes alive after dark (which happens after about 4 pm) with colourful lights and decorations filling the streets.  Huge Christmas trees appear around the city, and ice-skating rinks pop up outside the Natural History Museum and Somerset House.

Simply walking around the city you can get into the Christmas spirit, and warm up in a traditional English pub with a mulled wine or cider.  And if the weather gets too much, there are plenty of free museums in London to explore while keeping warm and dry!

Top hotel pick: The Rookery, Islington . Prices start from £319 per night. Check availability and book here.

Must do activity: London Winter Wonderland at Hyde Park.

Bath is ideal for a Christmas getaway as it has one of the most beautiful Christmas markets in the United Kingdom. Set in an idyllic location, spread along different roads on the historic centre of the city.

There are over 150 different stalls inside beautiful wooden houses, which sell everything related to the winter holidays, from beautiful decorations to handmade gifts, from unique jewellery pieces to artisan products, the market is the perfect place to find a little something special for Christmas.

When it comes to food, the market in Bath does not disappoint. There are plenty of stalls where you can enjoy a mug of mulled wine or hot spiced cider, hearty pies, delicious chocolates, grilled bratwurst topped with crispy onions and mustard, hot roast baps, sugary donuts, Nutella crepes and many more. The market is a foodie’s paradise.

One of the exciting things to do in the Bath Christmas Market is go on the Victorian merry-go-round, which attracts both children and adults. It’s a fun little journey on a carousel that adds to that magical Christmas feeling this market brings to its visitors. Some of the other attractions around the Christmas market in Bath are the ice rink and the glow in the dark mini golf course.

Each Christmas, Bournemouth is transformed into an eye-catching spectacle with an enormous Christmas Tree Wonderland. The town centre is filled with over 100 sparkling Christmas trees of all shapes, sizes, and colours.

The Christmas Tree Wonderland is the highlight of the town but there are many other popular attractions not to be missed, including the enchanting illuminations which make the town centre feel magical. Isle of Skye

Recommended by Rachel of Average Lives

There’s never a bad time to visit Skye and never bad weather – only unsuitable clothing. Undeniably, the island off the west coast of Scotland, is magical all year round, but if you visit for a UK Christmas break, you’ll be there without the summer crowds. This means Skye will become your own remote rural paradise and it will be much easier to get around the single-lane roads.

A good base for your Christmas getaway is Portree, the capital of Skye. Portree is perfect for seeing the main sights and hidden gems of the island, whilst being able to ‘pop’ back for a wee cup of tea. As the largest town on Skye, you will have access to restaurants, coffee shops, pubs and supermarkets. Therefore, although you’ll be rural, you will have everything you need to make your Christmas break unforgettable.

If you love being outdoors and want to spend some time in nature there’s no better place. Don’t miss the popular hikes of the Old Man of Storr and the Quiraing, they are both unique and offer unbelievable views of impressive rock formations. You can also take a Christmas walk on the beautiful coral beach, it may be cold, but the water will still be crystal clear. To reward your hiking efforts, go to the Talisker distillery to experience a whisky tasting tour. They are still open around Christmas time for tours, but please note they close on the 24th and 25th December.

Ultimately, there’s no better place to be reminded of the magic of Christmas than on the Isle of Skye in the Scottish Highlands.

Top hotel pick: The Skye Inn, Portree . Prices start from £120 per night. Check availability and book here.

Must do activity: Talisker Distillery whisky tasting tour. Book tickets here.

Christmas Breaks in Northern Ireland

Recommended by Allan of It’s Sometimes Sunny in Bangor

Belfast has always been overlooked due to its somewhat sketchy reputation in the past, but in recent years it has come on leaps and bounds to emerge as one of the most exciting and culturally diverse cities in the UK. On top of this it is cheap, as the 3rd cheapest city in Britain for a night out it is perfect for a Christmas break. Combine the city’s famous pubs and bars, and world-renowned craic (banter) of the city, there are few destinations that can compare for a unique and exciting getaway over the Christmas period. Visit the Belfast Christmas Market which sits central to the city’s festive celebrations beneath the historic buildings and among the monuments of the grounds of Belfast City Hall.

Everything is within easy walking distance whether it’s a walk through the Titanic Quarter and the free shipyard museum showcasing the origins of the Titanic Quarter, or a night out on the cobbled streets of the lively Cathedral Quarter. It’s no more than a mile between them and there is something for everyone. For a Christmas break in Belfast I would recommend staying in the main transit hub at Great Victoria Street, the Europa Hotel is a good start, and a great first night out would include a hog roast, mulled wine, and local craic in the heated beer tents of the Christmas Market.

Top hotel pick: Europa Hotel, Belfast. Prices start from £126 per night. Check availability and book here.

Must do activity: Visit the heated beer tents in the Christmas market and enjoy the local craic!

Meander through the trees of the peaceful park and this year for the first time there will also be a lovely Christmas village in Bute Park. Buy your tickets here .

Bute Park isn’t the only festive activity for a Christmas break in Cardiff, there is also the annual winter wonderland at Cardiff Castle which features an ice rink and ice walk. 8 Charming Villages Perfect For A Cozy Christmas In The UK

christmas travel uk

  • Activities and Interests

  • Seasonal Travel
  • United Kingdom

While the big UK cities offer ice rinks and sprawling Christmas markets you can get lost in, there’s something cozier, more intimate, about villages in the UK at Christmas. Cozy village pubs have a real fire burning in the grate and Christmas trees that fill the old rooms with the scent of pine.

Villagers get together to organize carol singing and lantern parades, and the village green sports a large fern tree that’s decorated with lights and tinsel. UK villages at Christmas are magical winter wonderland places to be. There are so many villages up and down the UK that are great places to be at Christmas, but here’s my pick of the best ones.

Mousehole Harbour light display in Cornwall, UK

1. Mousehole

The coastal village of Mousehole in Cornwall is beautiful all year round, but it really becomes something special at Christmas. The harbor lights are famous throughout the UK for being spectacular and unusual. The lights at Mousehole began in 1963 and have become bigger and more impressive year after year. The entire harbor is lit in the shapes of whales and serpents, Christmas trees, and stars.

Lanterns hang from boat to boat, bobbing on the winter sea, and the cottages by the water all join in and trim up their houses in cozy Christmas style. The switch-on of the lights takes place in mid-December and is accompanied by the local male choir singing Christmas carols along with the local brass band. As a backdrop to this wonderful display of Christmas cheer, a 150-foot sign on the hillside welcomes everyone into Mousehole with a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year.

Where To Stay

Mariner’s Cottage is a traditional old fisherman’s cottage that has perfect views over the harbor and out to sea. You can watch the lights from the windows of the cottage and stroll along to see them at the harbor. Then head back to the cottage for a cozy evening.

The switch-on of the lights is very popular and it gets very busy. If you’re driving into Mousehole for this event, it’s unlikely you’ll find anywhere to park. Instead, drive to nearby Penzance and get the park-and-ride bus from there.

Clearwell Caves

2. Clearwell

Gloucestershire.

The village of Clearwell has something a little more unusual in store for visitors at Christmas. For more than 4,500 years, the caves at Clearwell have been mined for ore and stone, and though the village’s “freeminers” are still entitled to mine here, the caves are now more of a tourist attraction. If you visit the caves at Christmastime, you’ll find they are transformed into a kind of grotto.

As you go underground, you can enjoy the fairy lights strewn around the cavern, and children can meet Santa. This is a large series of caves and there’s even a small Christmas market inside, and a café serving hot chocolate and Christmassy treats. This is a real underground mine, and some of the steps are uneven and can be slippery. There are handrails to guide you down, but this isn’t accessible to wheelchairs and isn’t suitable for anyone with walking difficulties.

Christmas in the Tudor Farmhouse Hotel

A stay at Tudor Farmhouse delivers a traditional Christmas full of mince pies, mulled wine, and a local brass band. Visitors can stay over the entire Christmas period and enjoy Christmas dinner at the hotel, a festive winter walk, and champagne with a Christmassy taster menu the next day.

The village of Shere in Surrey is so Christmassy it was used as the location for the movie The Holiday . This is where Cameron Diaz spent the holidays in “that” cottage when she house-swapped with Kate Winslet. And this is also where she met up with Jude Law in the pub, The White Horse. But Shere is much more than a movie set.

Visitors can join Christmas carols in the village square, where the trees are strewn with fairy lights and the small shops are transformed into grottos. You can have Christmas dinner at The White Horse and imagine you’re in a Christmas movie, and nearby is the start of the cycling and walking route, Christmas Pie Trail, which begins with a Christmas pie motif on the starting post.

Dunstanburgh Castle in Craster, UK

Northumberland

Craster is a small fishing village on the coast of Northumberland, mostly unspoiled and still retaining its old-world charm. A visit to Craster at Christmastime is a real “get away from it all” trip. This is a quiet and quite remote place, with the waves crashing against the rocks, a sea breeze, and old lanes and cottages. If you like your Christmas quiet and private, this is the place to go.

A walk along to the ruined Dunstanburgh Castle is dramatic in wintertime, and if you’re lucky enough to get a dusting of snow it’s very atmospheric. The cottages along the harbor are trimmed with Christmas lights, and the pubs offer a warm fire and real ale. This is definitely one for those people who like their Christmas traditional, cozy, and quiet.

Christmas at Middlerigg

Middlerigg is a traditional Craster cottage with three bedrooms, so it easily caters to your family or friends over the festive period. It’s perfectly positioned to look out over the harbor, while being set on the hill a little way up, so not too close to the waves.

5. Tarporley

Tarporley in Cheshire is picture-perfect all year round, but at Christmas, its old streets and narrow lanes turn into a wonderland of traditional Christmas activities with an array of lights and decorations. The village has a Victorian Christmas feel to it with a small Christmas market and trees adorned with lights and ornaments.

You can meet real reindeer in nearby woodland, brass bands play in the village, and there’s a gingerbread house where children can post letters to Santa, who’ll be along nearer to Christmas day to meet children and hand out presents. The community comes together to make all this happen, and everyone joins in with carol singing.

Christmas tree at The Swan in Tarporely

At the historic coaching inn, The Swan , you can take part in their festive “Swanderland,” a program of Christmassy events through November and December that includes quizzes, lunches, wreath making, and a Christmas market. This is a classic village inn that’s been offering a welcome stay to visitors for over 400 years.

6. Bray On Thames

The village of Bray on Thames, located just 40 minutes outside of London, makes for a wonderful, cozy Christmas destination. With a 3-mile-long frontage on the Thames, visitors can stroll the streets of Bray by foot to see the riverbank cottages decorated with twinkling lights and garlands, browse through Christmas markets and shops, and ice skate at Alexandra Gardens.

Monkey Island Estate has a history dating back 800 years and has seen monks, royalty, aristocrats, and a host of famous writers visit and stay. Monkey Island is surrounded by seven acres of land and is accessible only by footbridge, boat, or helicopter, giving it a real Christmas escape feel. If you have a large group with you, you can hire out the Marlborough Ballroom for a private festive party.

Castleton Village in Derbyshire dressed for Christmas

7. Castleton

A place of Christmas pilgrimage for those in the area and for people from further afield, Castleton is a village well known for how Christmassy it is come November. The lights are switched on this month, and the village becomes a place of cozy streets with the small traditional shops all trimming their windows with lights and decorations. Along the street outside, every cottage, shop, and pub has a Christmas tree lit with brightly colored fairy lights outside its door. There’s also Santa’s grotto in the village and a horse-drawn cart that Santa rides through the streets, inviting visitors to hop on board and take a ride on his sleigh.

Castleton is so famous for its Christmas lights and cozy Christmas feel that it does get very busy. If you want to be sure you can park and wander the streets without the crowds, come early in November when the lights have just been switched on.

Dunster by Candlelight

For a truly traditional English Christmas, visit the village of Dunster in Somerset at the beginning of December and experience “ Dunster by Candlelight .” This is when the entire village — it seems — parades through the streets, holding paper lanterns and carrying rows of glass-lit lanterns, each holding a lit candle inside, that are hooked onto the old lantern posts around the village.

The parade ends in a fairground festival gathering where amusements, drinks stalls, and hot food are all laid out for everyone to enjoy. Circus performers juggle with fire, and puppet shows spring up around the square. Choirs sing carols and Santa arrives with gifts for the children. If I had to pick, I’d say Dunster is just about the most Christmassy village in the whole of the UK!

5-Day Devon & Cornwall Small Group from London

This tour was worth taking if you wanted to save yourself the driving. Our driver/tour guide (Myron), who was quite new to the job, was very good. He went over and above to help people with their individual needs and was "kind of heart". The accommodation provided was not always of the standard expected for the cost of the tour. "Accessibility" could be a problem for some, so if you have issues with confined steep staircases, make it known to the tour company before you depart. Highlights of the tour were mainly in Cornwall. I enjoyed walking the beach at St Michael's Mount and visiting the Minack Theatre and would have loved to watch a production there. The smaller coach was comfortable albeit cosy, and being in a group of just 15 people was beneficial.

ONE FOR THE ROAD

I was very impressed by how flexible the team was in helping me customize my inter-rail tour, adding days at each end, for an additional fee. The accommodations varied between nice hotels in the heart of Dublin and Belfast, a cozy B&B cottage in Killarney, and a couple of spartan college dorm rooms in Cork and Galway. Most of the accommodations were a solid 15-minute walk from the train station or city center, discouraging a lot of back-and-forth between day and evening events. Every single one of the rail tickets was accurate and the trains ran on time, and I had assigned seats. With at least three days in every city, I had time to see most of the major attractions, and managed to work in several all-day sight-seeing excursions through other tour operators. Thanks to TourRadar, I was able to see a vast amount of gorgeous Ireland. If you like to travel alone, develop your own itinerary and have dependable transportation and accommodations worked out for you in advance, this is the package for you!

I recently went on a 3-day tour with Paul B, which was amazing! He was incredibly knowledgeable about the area and truly cared about everyone having a great time. Paul went above and beyond to ensure we had memories to last forever. He even sang songs to us that held significant meaning in Scotland. I highly recommend this tour to anyone looking to explore the region who may not be comfortable driving, is a solo traveler, or wants to see many things in a short time span. It involves a lot of time on a bus, with many stops for walking and stretching your legs, but most of the tour is spent on the bus. Be prepared and mindful of this, as you'll be in close quarters with other travelers. The Highlands are beautiful and get better and better as the tour continues. It's truly an unbelievable experience. Thank you, Paul B and Timberbush, for an unforgettable journey!

Middle East latest: US 'moving additional assets' to region amid fears of Iran attack on Israel

Washington officials expect Iran to attack Israel in retaliation to a strike on its embassy in Syria - as the US says it will not be drawn into any wider war and Tehran suggests its response will be non-escalatory. Listen to our latest podcast on how tensions are rising in the region.

  • Explained: Why is Iran threatening to attack Israel?

That's all for our coverage for now.

Well be back tomorrow morning with more updates on the Israel-Hamas war and wider tensions in the Middle East.

Tensions in the Middle East are continuing to increase this evening, as the US moves assets in the region to better protect its forces and bolster regional deterrence.

It comes amid the threat of an Iranian attack on Israel in retaliation to a deadly strike on its embassy in Syria.

Earlier, Joe Biden was asked what his message was to Iran.

You can watch the US president's answer below....

More details now on the news we brought you earlier about that US military moving assets in the Middle East.

An American defence official told Sky News the move was being made to bolster regional deterrence efforts and increase protection of US forces in the region.

Now, our US partner NBC News has reported most of the assets involved are already deployed in the area and just moving around.

Officials said moves were being made to be better positioned for defence of Israel and US assets and in case the US needs to respond to whatever Iran does.

The specific assets being moved in the region have not been identified.

Germany has advised it citizens to leave Iran amid escalating tensions in the Middle East.

The German foreign offices warned there was a risk of sudden escalation in Tehran's situation with Israel and also of arbitrary arrest in the country.

"In the current tensions, especially between Israel and Iran, there is a risk of a sudden escalation," it wrote in a travel warning.

"It cannot be excluded that air, land and sea transport routes could be affected."

It said Germans were at "concrete risk" of being arrested, interrogated and being given long prison sentences.

"Dual citizens with Iranian and German nationality are especially at risk," it added.

Three Palestinians have been killed in the West Bank today in military raids and settler rampage.

Israeli forces shot dead two Palestinians, including a member of the armed wing of Hamas, in raids.

While, the Palestinian Health Ministry has reported at least one person was killed in an Israeli settler rampage near Ramallah.

The Israeli military said Mohammad Omar Daraghmeh, who has been described as the head of Hamas infrastructure in the Tubas area, was killed during an exchange of fire with security forces.

It said a number of weapons and military-style equipment, including automatic rifles were found in his vehicle.

Hamas confirmed Daraghmeh's death and his membership of its armed Al Qassam Brigades.

The official Palestinian news agency WAFA said another man was killed by Israeli forces conducting a raid in the al Far'a refugee camp in Tubas.

Hamas mourned the man's death but did not claim him as a member.

The military said forces carrying out the operation opened fire on Palestinians who threw explosive devices and killed one man it said was attempting to attack them.

Israel has stepped up military raids in the West Bank since launching its operation in Gaza.

Joe Biden has reiterated US support for Israel, saying his administration is "devoted" to its defence.

The US president said his message to Iran, which has threatened to take military action against Israel, was simply "don't".

"We will support Israel. We will help defend Israel and Iran will not succeed," he said.

His comments come after a US defence official confirmed to Sky News that "additional assets" were being moved to the Middle East to "bolster regional deterrence efforts".

Iran has threatened to attack Israel in retaliation to a deadly strike on its embassy in Syria last week.

Israel has been widely blamed for the attack, but has not commented on it publicly.

Around 40 rocket launches have been identified crossing from Lebanon, the Israeli military has said.

In a Telegram post, the Israel Defence Forces said some rockets were intercepted, and the rest fell in open areas.

It also confirmed two Hezbollah explosive drones that had entered Israeli territory from Lebanon had been intercepted.

"Over the last few hours, the IDF struck in a number of locations in southern Lebanon in order to remove a threat," it added.

Israel and the Lebanese militant group Hezbollah have regularly exchanged fire across the border since the war in Gaza erupted last year.

Throughout the day, we have been reporting on the threat of an Iranian attack on Israel.

The US has warned the threat is "real" and "viable" and, in the last few moments, an American defence official has confirmed "additional assets" are being moved to the Middle East as a result.

Our security and defence analyst Michael Clarke has said it is "quite likely" Iran will attack, and the US has been given signals all day that it could be "imminent".

He added he is "fairly sure" Iran will not let go of the deadly strike on its embassy in Syria - which is what sparked the threat of an attack in the first place.

"The United States is pretty clear now that something is about to happen, maybe tonight, maybe tomorrow, but it won't be much further than that, and it might be quite big," Prof Clarke said.

He explained that the US has said it is more likely Iran will launch a direct attack on Israel, and the Iranians do have missiles with the capability to do so.

Israel has made it very clear it will hit back if Iran decides to attack, and Prof Clarke said some Israelis would "almost like that to happen" so they could attack some of Iran's nuclear facilities.

You can watch his full analysis below...

The US is "moving additional assets" to the Middle East, a defence official has told Sky News.

The move will "bolster regional deterrence efforts and increase force protection for US forces", the official said.

Our US correspondent Mark Stone said no further details have been provided.

"That means more military hardware is being moved or will be moved to the region to do two things - try to deter Iran from taking any massive action and also to protect existing American forces that are in the region," he said.

"I think the consensus among experts is that the Iranian will respond, but they will almost certainly respond against Israel directly rather than any American military in the region.

"Nevertheless, what that response will look like and what it will mean in terms of an Israeli response, we don't know yet."

The announcement comes after the White House said it changed its force posture in the region amid threats of an Iranian attack on Israel.

Fears of an escalating situation in the Middle East have grown in recent days after Iran threatened to attack Israel.

But how is Iran involved in the conflict - and why is it threatening to attack Israel?

Firstly, Iran is the biggest backer of Hamas, having provided weapons and training to the militant group in previous years.

It also backs Hezbollah in Lebanon and the Houthis in Yemen - both of which have been involved in attacks on Israel since the war in Gaza erupted last year.

Historically, Israel and Iran have been arch enemies, with both countries allegedly behind a long series of attacks on each other's interests.

Tensions between the two nations have been increasingly stretched since Israel entered Gaza following the 7 October Hamas attacks.

But, they became incredibly high last week after an attack on the Iranian embassy in Syria.

That's why Iran is threatening to attack Israel.

Two generals and seven members of the Iranian Revolutionary Guard were killed in the strike in Damascus, which Tehran has blamed on Israel.

The US military has said it also believes Israel was behind the attack.

However, Israel has not publicly commented on the airstrike.

Iran has been warned by the US not to use the embassy attack as a pretext to escalate the situation in the region.

Going on a holiday needn’t be a fraught experience …

The experts: travel agents on 20 ways to book a sustainable and sensational summer holiday

Keen to get away? Here is how to find a great deal, pick the perfect destination and support the local community

A holiday should be relaxing, but booking one can be a fraught experience, with days lost to endless scrolling, comparing reviews and prices. How can you be sure you are getting a good deal? Travel agents share their tips for the most affordable, sustainable and memorable trips.

1. Book like an agent

“Everybody views themselves as a travel agent and they can be up to a point,” says Paul Sharp from Newcastle upon Tyne, who operates as part of the Travel Counsellors network and has 30 years’ experience in the industry. He says the rise of budget airlines and online booking have led to people feeling confident about organising trips themselves. What is the one thing we should know when doing so? “It is a false economy to book things separately because you have no protection,” Sharp says. He gives the example of someone planning a trip to South Africa to watch rugby, who booked flights with the airline and hotels directly and rugby tickets elsewhere. The game was cancelled but the flights and hotel were non-refundable. If they had been booked together, the trip would have been covered under package travel regulations. “Book with a company you trust and know – there are a lot of sites that crop up and you don’t really know their provenance,” he says.

2. Be an early bird

“Planning in advance is always going to be better value,” says Helen Youngman , an independent travel agent and partner at 360 Private Travel , based near Norwich. “Late deals do exist, but a lot of hotels use ‘dynamic pricing’, which means prices increase as availability goes down. Flights are only going to increase in price the closer you get to the departure date because the fuller the flight gets, the more expensive it will be.” Sharp adds: “Don’t hang on for a last-minute deal because you could end up disappointed. Scheduled flights tend to be available about 11 months in advance, so that is the best time to book. Also, at that stage, a lot of hotels and accommodation providers will have early-bird specials.”

3. If you do book late, be flexible

Be open-minded …

Jessica Bollinger, who works in the Bristol branch of Danish travel agent Kilroy , which specialises in youth and adventure holidays, agrees that late deals are now something of a myth. “They are not unheard of, but with a last-minute deal there are certain things you’re not going to get. So you have to be really open-minded as to where you’re going to go,” she says.

4. Avoid peak season

The cheapest time to travel is always outside the school holidays, says Youngman, with Christmas and new year the most expensive times. Can you get a good deal if you fly on Christmas or New Year’s Day itself? Sometimes, she says, “but a lot of people are catching on to that trick”. If you have to go in the school holidays, be open to going somewhere off the beaten track. “Being clever about destinations is a good plan,” says Youngman. “In Europe, look farther east at places such as Montenegro, Albania and Georgia. And Morocco is a good summer destination for families.”

5. Midweek can be more affordable

“Midweek can be cheaper, it just depends on availability,” says Youngman. “A Thursday to Monday trip is going to be slightly more expensive than Monday to Friday, but all travel fares are based on availability, so the further in advance you can book, the better.”

6. Take out travel insurance when you book

A lot of people sort out their insurance at the airport, says Sharp, but it is best to do it as soon as you have booked your trip. He says: “Travel insurance doesn’t just cover you if you lose a bag or are poorly while you are away. It also covers you should you need to cancel for an insurable reason before you travel.” This includes illness or a bereavement.

7. On solo trips, consider a group tour

‘Some companies offer specialist female-only tours.’

If you are travelling alone, “pretty much anywhere is possible”, says Youngman. “Embarking on your first solo trip can be daunting, which is why small group tours are an amazing way to travel with like-minded people. Some companies I work with are doing specialist female-only tours with visits to female entrepreneurs, co-operatives, makers and bakers. Small group tours are great because they handle all the logistics, include really immersive experiences and are safe. They pick you up from the airport, and from that point onwards, you’re travelling with other people and you’ve got an expert guide.”

8. Have a daily budget

“We advise setting a daily limit for yourself while travelling and then multiplying that number by the days you are away to get the amount to save for your spending money,” says Bollinger. “When you work it out like this, it makes a lot more sense in people’s minds, especially young people who don’t have much budgeting experience. It also keeps you accountable to yourself, so you don’t blow everything right at the beginning and then have nothing left for the end.” To stick to a tight budget, she says: “Cook food as you go along and use public transport instead of tourist buses – this will really help you save money.”

9. Consider all-inclusive options

“If you are going to spend a lot of time eating and drinking in the hotel, I recommend upgrading to an all-inclusive option if possible,” says Youngman, “especially if you’d like a cocktail or two and you’re grazing throughout the day. Otherwise it can all add up and when you check out it costs a fortune.” With active holidays such as skiing or safaris, she adds: “If you have the option to choose an all-inclusive package that includes the activities, food and drink, that is usually a more cost-effective way of travelling. Because sometimes they will really sting you on the extras and it will be more expensive.”

10. Work your way around the world

“A working holiday is a great way to fund your trip,” says Bollinger, who helps people book travel to Australia, New Zealand and Canada by organising working holidays so they can extend their stay. “A lot of jobs will be hospitality-related, but if you go to a more rural spot you can do farm work, and if you have qualifications already, sometimes those can be used. Working holidays in Canada are often at ski resorts near Vancouver, so you get the added benefit of being in a beautiful place to take advantage of the winter sports.”

11. Travel as sustainably as possible

‘By travelling sustainably, you have more time to absorb the culture surrounding you.’

“You can get to most places in Europe by train , so if you are open to slowing down and having a more relaxed itinerary, not only are you travelling more sustainably, but you have more time to absorb the culture surrounding you,” says Youngman. “Be good to the environment you are travelling to see.” She stresses the importance of limiting flights as much as possible, especially internally, and avoiding indirect long-haul options. “We highly recommend ‘open-jaw flights’, which means you fly into one destination and out of another, to limit the number of flights,” says Bollinger. “We also promote travelling for longer in one destination as opposed to trying to go to many in a short time, and travelling overland when possible, instead of taking multiple flights.”

12. Offset carbon emissions with a reputable company

When considering carbon from flights, says Thomas Power of Pura Aventura , a B Corp sustainable travel company in Brighton: “Don’t believe the airline schemes, or anyone else who promises you absolution for a few quid. While 85% of offset schemes may be worthless, there are high-quality carbon credits starting at about £20 a tonne.” These can be bought to compensate for CO 2 emissions. Companies such as “ C Level help you at least take positive action to balance your impact”, says Power.

13. Think of responsible travel as a ‘fair exchange’

When travelling, says Power, consider: “What are we giving and what are we receiving? Is it a fair exchange? Is somebody getting something in return for what I am receiving in this transaction?” This applies to everything from “taking a cruise to Venice and not giving anything to the city, to going camping in Sussex and getting a supermarket delivery to your tent instead of going to the village shop or buying eggs from the house down the road”. This concept of “fair exchange” can be beneficial for everyone, he says, by giving you access to unique experiences. “In terms of the economy, the less money that leaves the village, town or city, the better,” he says.

14. Embrace the great outdoors

‘The carbon footprints of outdoor holidays tend to be much lower than hotel stays.’

If you camp out “you are closer to nature than any other accommodation option”, says Brodie Farrow, of the online camping and touring travel agent Pitchup . There are many benefits to this, she says: “It is really good for mental health. It is also a much more sustainable option: the carbon footprints of outdoor holidays tend to be much lower than hotel stays, as people travel by car rather than flying and it promotes local produce and low-impact activities such as hiking in the surrounding area. The accommodation or pitches are much less carbon intensive than hotels, too. And you have a positive impact on the community that you are visiting: camping attracts a higher number of customers at a lower cost than hotels do, which can help to underpin the viability of local facilities such as the shop, the bar and takeaway, and that benefits the wider community.”

15. If you are camping-phobic, glamp

“There really is something for everyone,” says Farrow. “You can get glamping accommodation with four-poster beds if you prefer camping in luxury, or you can go really wild and remote, with no facilities, out on your own and back to nature. I think you would be hard-pressed to say that there is nothing that appeals.” Although glamping has become a fairly pricey option, she says: “Some types are much cheaper than others. You can get some ‘pod-only’ camping accommodation, where you bring your own bedding, starting from £15 a night.”

16. If the weather is terrible …

… And you are under canvas, “try to keep your bedroom a wet-gear-free zone”, says Farrow. “Store and dry wet stuff in your porch area rather than in your bedroom compartment. Protect your equipment by putting it in plastic bags or dry bags. Don’t let anything touch your tent walls or you will have soggy socks.” For activities, she suggests, “swimming in the sea, because you are wet already, or going to the pub”. If you are disappointed by the weather on a non-camping holiday, “as annoying as it is, try to embrace it”, says Sharp. Many people come back from their holidays exhausted because they try to see and do everything when they’re away. Instead, he says: “Have a lie-in, ask local people which is the best restaurant for a long, lazy lunch and, most of all, relax and recharge your batteries – it’s a holiday after all.”

17. For best value destinations, try …

Belgrade has an underground culture scene similar to Berlin 20 years ago.

“Go for Belgrade over Berlin,” says Youngman. “It has an underground culture scene very similar to Berlin 20 years ago.” For backpackers, Bollinger suggests: “Some places in Central America can be really affordable. Nicaragua, Honduras and Guatemala are good options for someone wanting to think outside the box.” Sharp says there are more affordable options in “Cyprus, Bulgaria, Turkey and Egypt, compared with Spain and the Balearics, which are becoming increasingly expensive due to cost of living increases”. If you are looking for a staycation, North Yorkshire, Cumbria and Cornwall are some of the most popular UK locations on Pitchup, says Farrow, which can inflate the price. Locations such as Pembrokeshire and the Isle of Wight are cheaper.

18. For a trip of a lifetime that doesn’t cost the earth …

“North Macedonia is just amazing,” says Youngman. “Ohrid has beautiful cobbled streets, Ottoman architecture , fantastic food and wine and you can visit the most biodiverse lake in Europe.” Farrow says: “I camped at the foot of Ben Nevis last year before hiking up it. The weather was terrible but it was worth it for the unreal views.” While Bollinger’s most memorable trip was “Interrailing in Europe and finding a way to do things on my own. It was before smartphones, so it was a very interesting experience and built up my confidence in travelling.”

19. If in doubt, follow local people

“Live like a local person by taking local buses and eating in local spots,” says Bollinger. “It is going to save you money, and will also let you experience life in a different way.” Power adds: “People want to go to Peru but they never come back talking about Machu Picchu, they come back talking about the people they met. Buy local and connections will happen for you. In the absence of interaction with your host community, the things you see are just wallpaper.”

20. And remember: you get what you pay for

“If a deal looks too good to be true, it probably is,” says Sharp.
