2020 Chrysler Voyager review: Our expert's take

Fiat Chrysler Automobiles is bringing back a name from its past (or overseas, if you happen to live outside the U.S.) to adorn a new version of its Pacifica minivan. The popular and multiple-award-winning Pacifica will see its lower trim levels split off onto a new nameplate — the 2020 Chrysler Voyager — while the most premium levels continue on under the Pacifica badge.

The new Voyager will come in three flavors, all at the lower end of the trim spectrum, designed to cater to people who need to ferry seven people but also need to do it on a budget. The L, LX, and LXi trims will be available, with that last one being sold to fleets and rental car companies only. They will replace the Pacifica L and LX models, and the Pacifica will now be only sold in Touring, Touring L, Touring L Plus, S and Limited models.

The Bare Necessities — And Not Much Else

What do you get at the low end of the spectrum? You get a spacious van with standard seven-passenger seating, a disappearing fold-away third row, a powerful 3.6-liter V-6 making 287 horsepower mated to a nine-speed automatic transmission and front-wheel drive. Seats are cloth except in the fleet-only LXi and can be had in black, beige or gray. Options packages are limited: The base Voyager L can be had with an all-weather interior protection package or a safety package with a blind spot monitor and rear park assist with automatic stop, while the LX adds an optional Cold Weather Group Package with a heated leather steering wheel.

The multimedia system isn’t bad — it’s a standard 7-inch touchscreen running the latest Uconnect 4, which includes standard Apple CarPlay and Android Auto . Climate control is manual, as are the seats (power driver’s seat is standard on the LX and LXi), headlights, sliding side doors and rear liftgate.

If you want creature comforts, Chrysler suggests you head upmarket to the Pacifica, with all of its myriad bells and whistles. If you’re just needing very basic, comfortable, quiet transportation for seven, the Voyager is now your go-to option.

How’s It Feel?

The remarkable thing about the Voyager is that it feels every bit as nice as a more expensive, better-equipped Pacifica. The interior content is decidedly lesser, but the material quality isn’t — the dash, doors, and seats all still feel quite nice. In a quick spin around FCA’s Chelsea Proving Grounds just west of Detroit, it proved to be powerful and quiet, featuring a six-speaker audio system and still retaining the Pacifica’s active noise cancellation function that helps quiet the cavernous cabin. Yes, everything is manual in the Voyager — opening and closing the doors, adjusting the seats, etc. There are no LED headlamps. The 7-inch touchscreen feels a little on the small side if you’re used to Chrysler’s 8.4-inch model. But it has all the basic amenities you could want, if only just.

How Much Does It Cost?

No official pricing was given for the new 2020 Voyager, but a spokesperson on hand said that the automaker is aiming to bring the base model in at just less than $27,000, not including a destination charge (which currently sits at $1,495 for the 2019 Pacifica and is unlikely to be less for 2020). This would be just a bit less than the 2019 Pacifica’s starting price of $28,730, including destination, so it looks like Chrysler is still aiming for getting the van out the showroom door for just under $30,000.

In comparison, the 2019 Honda Odyssey starts at $31,285 including destination, and a 2020 Toyota Sienna costs a minimum of $32,510, but a 2019 Kia Sedona matches the Voyager at $28,245 ( see them compared with the Pacifica ). The Voyager’s base price is still a lot of scratch for any new vehicle, but it’s a pretty good deal for a very comfortable seven-passenger people-hauler. You’ll be able to find the new 2020 Chrysler Voyager in dealerships in September.

Chrysler voyager do not buy.

This vehicle has many issues, I changed out all the spark plugs did so much other work for this vehicle and it’s doing the same problems it jerks it’s been doing that ever since I got the vehicle. Every time I take it to the dealership they claim there’s nothing wrong, but I’m beginning to believe that there is something wrong. I’m beginning to believe that there is a defect in the transmission or the engineor and also possible defect and electric components the dealership did not honor my position when I had my warranty and now that my warranty is expired because I’m over the miles I have to pay in my own pocket to get a lot of these things to fix but even though I spent so much money fixing this car, the same problem still occurs

Love Love Love!!!!!

Looooove my new Voyager!! It has heated seats and steering wheel!! So much room and great trunk space!! The only thing is I wish it has Power doors and trunk and I also wish the side windows in the far back opened. Even just vented. But overall i loooooove it ! Smooth quiet ride!!

What's New for 2021?

Not much has changed on the Voyager for 2021, but Chrysler has improved the van's optional driver-assistance hardware to include updated radar and camera sensors which can detect pedestrians and alert the driver or attempt to mitigate an accident. The Voyager's suite of driver-assistance features remains optional for 2021, as part of the Safety Tec package.

Pricing and Which One to Buy

The price of the 2021 Chrysler Voyager starts at $29,655 and goes up to $32,365 depending on the trim and options.

Unless you're prepared to go with the barest-boned minivan on the market, we recommend you look at the LX. While neither trim provides much in the way of amenities, the LX at least offers a more compliant suspension tune than the L as well as automatic headlamps, aluminum wheels (instead of steel), three-zone manual climate control, and superior exterior lighting. Plus, if you want options such as remote start, heated front seats, a heated steering wheel, satellite radio, and/or a built-in DVD player to entertain the kiddos, the LX is the only way to go.

Engine, Transmission, and Performance

Mechanically, the Voyager is identical to the Pacifica, using the same 287-hp 3.6-liter V-6 engine and nine-speed automatic transmission to drive the front wheels. In our testing, the Pacifica managed a 7.3-second sprint to 60 mph. Given this van forgoes some of the features that weigh down its brother, the Voyager likely weighs less than the Pacifica and thus has the potential to beat that time. Don't hold your breath for a hybrid. Chrysler will reserve that powertrain for the pricier minivan in its lineup.

Fuel Economy and Real-World MPG

We haven't had the opportunity to test the Voyager on our 200-mile highway fuel-economy loop, but for reference, the last nonhybrid Pacifica we tested achieved 31 mpg. The Chrysler vans both earn EPA estimates of 19 mpg in the city and 28 mpg on the highway. The Voyager's 22 mpg combined score betters that of the Kia Sedona and matches that of the Honda Odyssey , both chief competitors.

Interior, Comfort, and Cargo

As with the exterior styling, powertrain, and chassis, the Voyager's interior mimics that of the Pacifica, albeit with fewer creature comforts. You won't find leather seats, in-dash navigation, automatic climate control, or power-sliding side doors here. What's more, the Voyager provides Stow 'n Go capability only for the rear bench seats. If you want the second row to fold into the floor, you'll need to shell out around $35,000 for the base Pacifica. You can, however, tuck away valuables in the underfloor cubbies in front of the captain's chairs if you opt for the LX trim. Behind the third row, the Voyager boasts the same 32 cubic feet of cargo volume as the Pacifica. So while we have yet to put this van through our practical space tests, we feel safe saying that the Voyager will be able accommodate what its brother could (i.e., 12 carry-on suitcases with the rear seats up).

Infotainment and Connectivity

Chrysler provides a 3.5-inch digital display in the gauge cluster, a 7.0-inch touchscreen infotainment system in the center stack, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto integration, and a six-speaker audio system with active noise cancellation. Either trim level provides Bluetooth streaming and integrated voice control, but only the Voyager LX allows for SiriusXM radio. Need to entertain the little ones? A rear-seat overhead DVD player can be had on the LX for $995.

Safety and Driver-Assistance Features

Overall safety rating (nhtsa).

The 2021 Voyager earned a five-star rating from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration ( NHTSA ), but it wasn't named a Top Safety Pick by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety ( IIHS ). Looking for driver-assistance features ? You won't find many in the Voyager and nothing of the like is offered as standard. Key safety features include:

• Available rear parking sensors with rear automated emergency braking
• Available blind-spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alert

Warranty and Maintenance Coverage

Chrysler's warranty coverage is fairly typical for the class. The Toyota Sienna offers more value here in the form of a two-year/25,000-mile complimentary scheduled maintenance plan.

Here's a Throwback Thursday we didn't see coming. Chrysler is rebranding the lower trim levels of its Pacifica minivan with an old-school name from its past. The 2020 Chrysler Voyager dusts off a nameplate from the defunct Plymouth brand that dates back 45 years and was last seen about 15 years ago when it quietly disappeared as — wait for it — the Chrysler Voyager.

Cost to Drive Cost to drive estimates for the 2020 Chrysler Voyager L 4dr Minivan (3.6L 6cyl 9A) and comparison vehicles are based on 15,000 miles per year (with a mix of 55% city and 45% highway driving) and energy estimates of $3.55 per gallon for regular unleaded in North Dakota.

Despite the retro name dust, the Voyager is really just the first two trim levels of last year's Pacifica. There are minor feature changes here and there, but effectively it's the same enchilada. That means you get plenty of space for passengers and cargo, a classy-looking cabin, capable acceleration, and even useful towing capability of up to 3,600 pounds.

Reviving the Voyager nameplate is a curious choice, and we suspect it has more to do with the impending discontinuation of the old Dodge Grand Caravan than a detailed plan of selling a ton more minivans under the Chrysler brand. As a shopper, all you need to focus on is the end result. The Voyager is a solid minivan and its pricing is attractive, but it can't quite match the Honda Odyssey for overall refinement.

The base L trim comes with essentials such as a rearview camera, cloth seats, a second-row bench seat (for seven-passenger seating), a folding/collapsible third-row Stow 'n Go bench seat, Bluetooth, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, and a 7-inch touchscreen.

The LX trim adds more comforts, including softer suspension tuning, a power-adjustable driver's seat, second-row captain's chairs, three-zone climate control, and satellite radio. Several safety features (blind-spot monitoring, rear parking sensors, rear cross-traffic alert) come with the optional SafetyTec package for both trims, while a roof rack, remote start, heated front seats, and a leather-wrapped steering wheel are options for the LX.

Gute Gründe

• Der Chrysler Voyager überzeugt mit einer sehr hohen Flexibilität im Innenraum.
• Die Motoren bieten ausreichend Leistung für alle alltäglichen Fahrten.
• Auf Wunsch verfügt der Chrysler Voyager über eine gute Ausstattung mit vielen Features.
• Das Fahrzeug bietet zudem einen guten Schutz für Insassen und Verkehrsteilnehmer.
• Eine hohe Zuladung und eine Anhängerkupplung sorgen für eine hohe Alltagstauglichkeit.

Motorisierung

Beim Blick auf die verfügbaren Motorisierungen zeigt sich der Chrysler Voyager typisch amerikanisch. Hier stehen also vor allem Varianten mit viel Leistung und einem großen Hubraum bereit. Dies gilt beispielsweise bereits für den Dieselmotor, der sich aufgrund günstiger Unterhaltskosten und der serienmäßigen Ausstattung mit einem Partikelfilter bei vielen Kunden großer Beliebtheit erfreuen durfte. Das Modell leistet maximal 120 kW bei einem Drehmoment von 360 Nm .

Bevorzugten die Kunden einen Benzinmotor, stand zumindest in der letzten Generation ebenfalls eine Variante zur Verfügung. Hier setzte der Chrysler Voyager auf einen 3,8 Liter großen V6-Motor mit 142 kW und 305 Nm Drehmoment. Beide der genannten Motorisierungen kombinierte der Autobauer mit einem 6-Stufen-Automatikgetriebe . Wer mit dem Benziner unterwegs sein wollte, konnte im Übrigen nur eine der verfügbaren Ausstattungslinien wählen. Beim Dieselmotor war eine individuelle Konfiguration mit allen Varianten möglich. Im Rahmen des Facelifts ersetzte Chrysler den 3,8 Liter Benziner durch einen minimal kleineren Motor, welcher ab 2011 einen Hubraum von 3,6 Litern bot.

Abmessungen

Der Chrysler Voyager sollte Platz für die gesamte Familie bieten und sich überdies für umfangreichere Transporte eignen. Dementsprechend groß fällt die Karosserie aus. Sieben Sitzplätze und ein großer Motor benötigen entsprechend viel Platz. Mit einer Länge von über fünf Metern und knapp zwei Metern Breite eignet sich der Chrysler Voyager nur eingeschränkt für den Stadtverkehr und die Suche nach dem passenden Parkplatz kann durchaus eine gewisse Zeit in Anspruch nehmen. Das Leergewicht beträgt 2.160 Kilogramm in der Basisvariante.

Allerdings kommt die Größe der Karosserie den Mitfahrern im Innenraum zugute. Die mindestens 638 Liter Kofferraumvolumen sprechen hier bereits eine deutliche Sprache. Zudem verfügt der Chrysler Voyager über ein variables Sitzkonzept . Die Sitze in der zweiten und dritten Reihe lassen sich nicht nur sehr einfach verschieben oder verstellen, sondern auch vollständig ausbauen. Hiermit wird der Chrysler Voyager mit wenig Aufwand zum praktischen Transporter und nimmt bis zu 3.296 Liter Gepäck auf. Sollte dies immer noch nicht ausreichen, stehen praktische Dachträger zur Verfügung. Darüber hinaus konnten sich die Kunden für die optionale Anhängerkupplung mit einer maximalen Anhängelast von bis zu 1.520 Kilogramm entscheiden.

Neben der Bezeichnung Chrysler Voyager wird das Fahrzeug in vielen Ländern auch unter anderen Bezeichnungen verkauft, dies gilt beispielsweise für einen Dodge Grand Caravan SE oder den Chrysler Town & Country LX. In allen Fällen bietet das Fahrzeug aber bereits serienmäßig ein gutes Platzangebot und die bereits angesprochene Flexibilität. Je nach gewählter Ausstattungslinie sind zudem viele technische Features integriert.

Die Ausstattungslinien LX, Touring und Limited bieten einen sehr guten Komfort , schon in der Basis verfügt das Modell beispielsweise über einen 12-Volt-Stromanschluss vorne und hinten, eine wärmedämmende Verglasung oder eine Zentralverriegelung mit Fernbedienung. Richtig komfortabel wird es allerdings erst, wenn die Kunden den Aufpreis für die weiteren Linien aufbringen. Ob Xenon-Scheinwerfer, Rückfahrkamera oder elektrische Schiebetüren samt Fernbedienung - das Fahrzeug lässt dann so gut wie keine Wünsche offen.

Viele weitere Ausstattungsmerkmale müssen allerdings auch in den besser ausgerüsteten Varianten optional gebucht werden. Dies gilt beispielsweise für das DVD-Entertainment-System auf den Rücksitzen, das Radio-/Navigationssystem sowie das Parkpilotsystem.

Der Chrysler Voyager war nie ein Schnäppchen , erfreute sich mit seinem hohen Alltagsnutzen und der guten Ausstattung aber dennoch auch in Deutschland einer großen Nachfrage. Nicht ohne Grund handelt es sich auch weiterhin um das am häufigsten verkaufte Modell des Autobauers auf dem deutschen Markt. Die letzte Generation kostete mit dem Dieselmotor und der Basisausstattung mindestens 35.000 Euro . Bei besser ausgestatteten Varianten oder auch dem Benziner lagen die Anschaffungskosten allerdings auch schnell bei über 50.000 Euro .

Mit weitestgehend zuverlässigen Motoren und einem guten Zustand ist der Chrysler Voyager als Gebrauchtwagen für Familien eine gute Wahl. Günstige Fahrzeuge können schon ab etwa 4.000 Euro gekauft werden. Allerdings weisen viele gebrauchte Modelle eine sehr hohe Laufleistung auf. Dies birgt das Risiko für teure Nachfolgereparaturen .

Der Chrysler Voyager ist groß und wuchtig, dies kann auch das moderne Exterieur der letzten Generation kaum verbergen. Die Entwicklung der vergangenen Jahre ist allerdings mit Blick auf die Optik dennoch beeindruckend. Von sehr kantig bis eher rundlich war in den früheren Generationen alles vertreten. In der letzten Ausführung, die bis 2016 gebaut wurde, wirkte der Chrysler Voyager optisch sehr harmonisch. Große Scheinwerfer, viele Zierleisten und ein riesiger Kühlergrill dürfen bei einem Fahrzeug mit amerikanischem Einfluss natürlich ebenfalls nicht fehlen.

Das Interieur wirkt vor allem sehr luftig und gleichzeitig gut durchdacht . Die Bedienung aller Features gelingt auch ungeübten Fahrern sehr leicht , da das Handling der Mittelkonsole sehr intuitiv ist. Der Fahrer und die Insassen profitieren nicht nur von viel Kopf- und Beinfreiheit , sondern auch von den großflächigen Verglasungen und der damit einhergehenden angenehmen Helligkeit. Die großen Scheiben samt Wärmeverglasung gestalten die Fahrten mit dem Chrysler Voyager sehr komfortabel. Allerdings erscheinen die Verarbeitungs- und die Materialqualität gerade für ein Fahrzeug dieser Preisklasse nicht mehr wirklich zeitgemäß. Hier wäre bis zuletzt noch deutliches Verbesserungspotenzial vorhanden gewesen.

Bei der Sicherheit gibt es rund um den Chrysler Voyager nichts zu beanstanden. Die große Karosserie und das hohe Gewicht tragen einen immensen Teil zum sicheren Fahren bei, wie auch eine Bewertung von fünf Sternen aus dem Euro-NCAP-Crashtest aus dem Jahr 2009 unterstreicht. Der große Van verfügt zudem serienmäßig über viele sicherheitsrelevante Einrichtungen , darunter ein ESP und ein ABS sowie ISOFIX auf den Rücksitzen . Lediglich die Bremsen wirken mit dem hohen Leergewicht des Fahrzeugs im Fall der Fälle etwas überfordert und auch die Lenkung vermittelt eine gewisse Schwergängigkeit. Dies kann bei einem großen Van aber auch kaum anders erwartet werden.

Alternativen

Die Anzahl an großen Vans mit Platz für die gesamte Familie hat über die Jahre tendenziell eher abgenommen. Aus dem Hause Dacia rollt nun mit dem Jogger zumindest ein großer Hochdachkombi zu den Händlern, der als Neuwagen bestellt werden kann. Das Fahrzeug bietet viel Platz, einen hohen Komfort sowie ein attraktives Design. Mit einem Einstiegspreis von 13.990 Euro stellt der Jogger eine solide Neuwagen-Alternative zum Chrysler Voyager dar.
