East Jordan Tourist Park is conveniently set off Interstate 75, Michigan Highway 32 and US Highway 131. We're just 72 miles from beautiful Traverse City and twelve miles from Charlevoix. Our family-friendly RV park is run by the city of East Jordan, which is home to the East Jordan Iron Works Museum, the district library, the East Jordan City Marina, and the Elm Point Museum. Join us for days of relaxing on the sand, swimming in the lake, or boating and fishing (the marina and boat launch are right nearby.) We recently completed a large playground which is suitable for ages 2-12 years of age. We have plenty of ball fields, courts, and rooms for games, and tennis courts. Our park is now open year round, and we have cable TV hook-ups throughout the park. WI-FI is available at an additional fee. Our campsites range from full hook-ups to partial hook-ups and tent campsites. Daily, monthly and seasonal rates are all available at East Jordan Tourist Park, so you can stay with us as long as you like. New for 2013 are 2 camping cabins! We stopped to visit with friends who stay at the tourist park full time in the summer. It was a really nice rv park. The sites were clean as was the bathroom. They have a really nice beach area for swimming and boat slips. Our kids loved the play grounds. The price we paid included water and electricity. While this park sits right on the main road, The town is not busy or loud.

Very nice sandy beach (almost no rocks) and a great playground on the other end of the campground near the boat launch ($10 day for non-michiganers, $5 for locals). Fantastic wifi, used it to watch movies on the Roku at night. Easy access to local restaurants (BC Pizza and ice at Dairy Grille) and the boat launch. Would recommend, especially for families with kids under 10. 4 stars only because of the many areas of the campground with standing water 36 hrs after the storm moved on, they could do something about slopping the lots and draining the water better.

We stayed here for 2 nights in August, 2022. Reserved online & paid $35.75 a night for power & water. There is a dump station too. The sites in the row closest to the road (2-21+) are pretty close to each other, but I believe have sewer. The next two rows (22-40) are pretty tight too. Site 54 is on grass with a cement & wood “pad” next to it. We had one night with no one in front of us, so great view of the lake! Lots of semi-permanent RVs, but not too many people. Didn’t use the facilities. Beach is very nice - great for kids & families! Great place to base from to explore Charlevoix. No dogs on the beach, which is good for kids. Can walk a bit outside of the park to let your dog get wet. Swings on the beach / very cool! This is not our normal style of “campground” - definitely more of a RV park feel, but we really liked it! 4 stars instead of 5 because the sites are very close.

Sites are level gravel or grass. Sewer connections are a little wonky. Ours was directly under our camper. Sites are very very close. The playground and beach are very nice. We camped at East Jordan Tourist Park in a Travel Trailer.

You must visit Charlevoix, Boyne City and Petosky. All three are charming towns with shops and restaurants....

Camping East Jordan Tourist Park in Michigan

blog-post

By Nick from 50 Campfires

Camp Michigan: I’m talking with Tom today. He’s the Parks Director at East Jordan Tourist Park in Michigan. Tom, why don’t you get us started by giving us a little bit of background on East Jordan Tourist Park?

Tom: Well, the East Jordan Tourist Park is city owned. It is located right on Lake Charlevoix, and we are only about 14 to 15 miles away from Lake Michigan. Very popular tourist area is the lake. The campground itself has a public swimming beach. We have 85 total campsites, 70 of it which are full hook-up. Includes Cable TV. We do have 50amp service available for large rigs. We have tent sites. We have pop-up sites. Kind of a good range for all sorts of camping. We do have restrooms and showers. We have two cabins that are heated. Even in the winter, we rent those out, and those are available for weekly and monthly rentals. We offer also seasonal camping and monthly reservations as well as weekends. We have a large playground that was added just a few years ago. We have ball fields, tennis courts, basketball courts – all that are adjacent to the Park. And we’re located right on M-66, which is a State Highway. A very popular road that goes up to Charlevoix, Michigan.

Camp ground in the fall

Camp Michigan: Great. So, no shortage of options for the type of camping that somebody might want to do. What are the most popular activities for people who stay there?

Tom: The most popular is probably, if you’re staying right at the campground, is the swimming beach and all the recreational opportunities that we have with the facilities. Nearby we have – I mean there’s an unlimited amount of outdoor activities for a short drive. If you wanted to drive in many directions, we have a lot of outdoor, like I said, four-wheel off road. There’s horseback riding. There’s boating. Fishing is excellent in Lake Charlevoix. And again, we don’t have docks, but we do offer free trailer parking and there is anchoring for their boats that are right near the swimming area.

Camp Michigan: Sure, fantastic. Two more questions for you, Tom. If you were going to spend just one hour at East Jordan Tourist Park yourself, how would you spend your time there?

Tom: Well, if I was a new customer, I would try to take advantage of all the things right here and even in walking distance. It isn’t a large city. It’s very walkable. Easy to get around. The downtown isn’t very far away, but I’d probably try to take advantage of a lot of the swimming and boating activities just because that’s probably the most popular. But any shopping is also walking distance, and we have a great Visitors Bureau nearby that can be assistance for any of the day trips if you would like to travel around the Northern Michigan area.

Camp Michigan: All right, perfect. And last question for you, Tom. If you were going to spend just one night at East Jordan Tourist Park in Michigan, which specific site would you stay at and why?

Tom: Well, our most popular sites are corner sites. Sites 55 and 56, because you get a great lake view. They’re a little bit wider sites, but the nice thing is, is all of our full hook-up sites come with all the same amenities. Very close in size. So, even if you were to book a reservation at the last minute, you would still be very happy with your site. They’re all partially wooded and, again, with full hook-up you have unlimited amount of utilities with no other surcharges.

Camp Michigan: Perfect. Well, hey, thank you so much, Tom, for giving us all that great information there about the surrounding area and to tell us a little bit more about East Jordan Tourist Park in Michigan.

Tom: Okay, you’re very welcome.

‘We saw an immediate drop’: Jordan’s tourism industry is suffering amid the Israel-Hamas war

Jordan’s economy relies heavily on tourism but since Hamas’ attack on Israel in October and the ongoing war in Gaza, tourism in the country has slowed down. This is also the case in other countries in the region, including Israel itself, Lebanon and Egypt.

  • By Shirin Jaafari

A general view of the ancient city of Jerash, north of the capital Amman, Jordan, Dec. 6, 2023. Jerash is one of the most popular attractions in Jordan behind Petra. It is considered one of the largest and most well-preserved sites of Roman architecture in the world outside of Italy, and its history goes back more than 6,500 years.

The ancient Roman ruins of Jerash, on the outskirts of Amman, Jordan, represent one of the best-preserved Roman cities.

Here, gladiators once competed in chariot-racing contests as spectators watched from the stone seats.

Dhirar Atmeh grew up in the area.

“When I used to come, and you know, see people come in as tourists, I said ‘this is my thing. This is where I should go,’” he said.

ruins

Atmeh has been working as a tour guide in Jordan for the past two decades. He said that nothing brings him more joy than telling foreign visitors about the long history and the splendor of this site.

But these are tough times for Atmeh and the thousands of others who work in the tourism industry in Jordan and neighboring countries. The war in Gaza has brought his business to a near standstill, he said: “I lost 80% of my job. I mean 80% of my reservations were canceled.”

Tours from the US, Europe and Australia were canceled one after another. People stopped coming.

ruins

Atmeh has five kids and he said he’s struggling to provide for them. For him, what’s happening now brings back difficult memories of the early days of the pandemic, when he lost most of his assets.

“I had a car. I had to sell it. I had a house, I sold it. Many things … I had a piece of land also I sold. So, it wasn’t easy.”

Atmeh said that he’s worried about the weeks and months ahead, as there seems to be no end to the fighting.

Already, Jordan’s unemployment rate, as of last year, was about 23%, according to the World Bank.

man near ruins

If tourists don’t come back, he said, it’s not like he can just find another job.

Tours here are typically part of a package that includes Jordan, Israel and Egypt. Conflict in one of them means that people cancel their whole trip.

Ben Julius is the founder of Tourist Israel, one of the largest tour agencies in Israel.

“From the beginning of the war, we saw an immediate drop, close to zero, from what was expected to be one of the best and busiest periods ever.”

In Israel, flights have been canceled, tourist sites have been closed and hotels have been empty .

ruins

“It’s been very difficult for us. Around 70% of our team — we immediately had to send to furlough again. Many of them only came back into the tourism industry and back into the company in the last year because of the recovery from COVID.”

Julius operates tours in Egypt as well, and he said that they’ve had many cancellations there, too.

In Lebanon, the Christmas season is also shaping up to be a loss this year .

tourists in the ruins

Juliuis is seeing signs of improvement for next year. He said that people are booking their trips in advance.

“That’s giving us a little bit of hope going into next year.”

tourists

Meanwhile, back in Jordan, the minister of tourism, Makram Mustafa Queisi, predicts an even bigger drop in the number of tourists in the coming months if the war doesn’t stop.

“The problem is that people in the West and elsewhere, actually, when they look at the map, they don’t differentiate between Jordan and the neighboring countries. People don’t understand that we are not in a war zone.”

people at a stand

He said he wants to change that perception and help people understand that Jordan is a safe place to visit. When tourists don’t come, he said, that affects a wide swath of the economy.

“We talk about the bus drivers for example, we speak about restaurants, we speak about hotels, we speak about the tour operators, and the people who work with the tour operators.”

For tourism to survive, he said, this region needs stability and security.

man in office

“This aggression has to stop because at the end of the day there’s no winner.”

In the meantime, Jordan is using this unexpected break in tourism to renovate some of its historical sites.
