Colorado Weather In December

Colorado Weather December

The weather in Colorado in December brings some of the coldest temperatures for some areas. The average daily December highs are around 43°F (6°C) and the lows drop to 17°F (-8°C) in the evening. December is considered Denver’s coldest month, while temps are just starting to drop in other regions of the state.

December doesn’t bring much rain, rather there will be decent snowfall throughout the month, blanketing almost every inch of the state in fresh, dry powder. Despite Colorado’s arid weather, December tends to have higher humidity levels – though these levels will not compare to the Southeast United States. Rather, they will be slightly high for Colorado’s normal levels.

No matter the time of year, altitude will always be a factor when traveling to Colorado. Some towns like Alma have an elevation of 10,300′ and others like Wray have an elevation of over 3,000′. As a matter of fact, altitude sickness affects nearly 10% of all visitors. There will be more visitors than you’d see in November or October, but not nearly as many as you’ll see later in the ski season. Hotel rates will vary by city, with most ski towns offering a wide range of rates, small towns being the cheapest and the capitol city of Denver averaging around $150 – $250 per night for the best hotels during Christmas. Residents invite visitors to participate in dressing for the occasion in order to please the snow god, resulting in a great ski season of fresh powder.

Steamboat has lots to offer guests during the month of December. It’s ski slopes are open and the town is filled with festivities. This is the ultimate time for relaxation in Steamboat Springs, while the crowds are low and the winter chill is blowing in, taking advantage of the hot springs.

The Polar Express train ride takes riders on a journey to the North Pole and guests are encouraged to wear their favorite Christmas pajamas or matching outfits for the occasion. In addition to the many attractions all over the city, like Denver Union Station and other historical sites (a lot of these experiences are included in the $30 Mile High Culture Pass – three days of admission and discounts on transportation), you can easily escape to more secluded areas right outside the capitol – like Red Rocks Park or Dinosaur Ridge .

However, it does mark the start of the holiday season so there will be many wintery festivities happening in cities and towns all over the state. Denver, in particular, is a great place to be this week to experience the capitol before Christmas crowds roll in.

Denver Christkindl Market is just finishing up, treating attendees to a Christmas market with European flair. Similar to the German, French and Scandinavian cities in Europe, the Denver Christkindl Market imitates the over-the-top decorations, emphasizes local artisans and serves up deliciously crafted treats and drinks.

Tourists will enjoy the lower travel rates and crowds, while taking part in these annual experiences. Skiing is also a great activity to enjoy, with all of the resorts open to skiers and snowboarders.

Ullr Fest has begun in Breckenridge, which is a very unique event you won’t find anywhere else in Colorado. The 10 day festival pays tribute to the Norse god Ullr, who controls the snow. Residents invite visitors to participate in wearing Viking garb, visiting the open-air art installations, perform the scavenger hunt and more in order to have a bountiful snow for the ski season.

Meanwhile in Georgetown, the Christmas Market is underway. This Victorian-era town seeks to bring the Christmas season to life as it was over one hundred years ago. In addition to the market shopping, there are several holiday attractions like the Victorian carolers and dancers, Old Saint Nicholas, hot cocoa and roasted chestnuts.

The third week of December in Colorado is often Christmas week, with Christmas Eve and Christmas Day celebrations all around. It’s best to get to your destination days in advance of these holidays so you don’t risk missing a flight or opportunity too close to Christmas.

The holiday towns of Breckenridge, Georgetown, Steamboat Springs and Telluride are all wonderful destinations for experiencing a true Winter Wonderland during Christmas week. There are plenty of other experiences around Colorado, but these will have the most to do to fill a weeklong vacation.

In addition to these towns, Aspen is another good destination, hosting its 12 Days of Aspen this week. The town hosts varied events and experiences for families to participate in every single day leading up to New Year’s Eve.

Fourth Week

The fourth week of December in Colorado is New Year’s Eve week and it’s best for tourists to plan well in advance. The days between Christmas and New Year’s Eve can be extremely hectic no matter where you go, and it’s probably best to choose one destination for your stay.

This week, the Dillon Ice Castles begins for the winter season. Visitors will get the chance to walk through ice-carved tunnels, see bubbling water features and use the ice slides on their icy adventure. The castles are lit from outside and inside by colorful lights to make the experience even more enchanting; residents suggest going to see this attraction at night.

New Year’s Eve festivities are going on across the entire world and Colorado has three notable experiences to consider. Steamboat Springs and Telluride will both have Torchlight Parades on the ski slopes for people to view from the base of the mountain, featuring a firework show. Denver will have it’s own celebration downtown with a bustling event and fireworks of its own.

From visiting the North Pole to shredding on the slopes, Colorado in December has a great selection of holiday activities to make your vacation the best ever. December offers so many delightful events and outdoor experiences to get you up close and personal with the snow covered mountains, while celebrating the season in it’s purest form.

  • Entry Point: Research the best entry point for your trip. Colorado has several major airports, such as Denver International Airport (DEN), which offers convenient access to various regions within the state. Plan your transportation from the airport to your desired destination, whether renting a car, taking a shuttle, or utilizing public transportation.

Consider proximity to your planned activities, amenities, and budget. Booking in advance is recommended, as December is a popular time for tourism in the state.

Practical Tips and Advice Before Visiting Colorado In December

Practical Tips and Advice Before Visiting Colorado In December

When traveling to Colorado in December, being prepared and equipped for winter conditions is important. Here are some practical tips and advice to ensure a smooth and enjoyable trip:

  • Packing Essentials: Pack warm clothing suitable for cold temperatures, including insulated jackets, thermal layers, hats, gloves, scarves, and waterproof boots. Remember to bring extra socks and hand warmers. Packing sunscreen and sunglasses is also advisable, as the sun can be intense even in winter.
  • Safety Precautions: Be aware of the potential hazards of winter conditions and take necessary precautions. Check weather forecasts regularly and be prepared for changes in conditions. Familiarize yourself with the signs of hypothermia and frostbite, and know how to stay safe in snowy or icy environments. Having a basic winter survival kit in your car is a good idea, including a flashlight, blankets, food, water, and a first aid kit.
  • Transportation Options: Renting a car provides flexibility and convenience for getting around Colorado, especially if you plan to explore multiple attractions. However, be prepared for snowy and icy roads and consider choosing a vehicle equipped for winter conditions. Alternatively, public transportation options, including buses and light rail, are available in major cities like Denver and Colorado Springs.
  • Road Conditions and Safety: Stay updated on road conditions and closures by checking the Colorado Department of Transportation (CDOT) website or using their mobile app. Practice safe driving techniques in winter, such as driving slowly, allowing for increased braking distances, and avoiding sudden maneuvers. If you need to become more familiar with driving in snowy or icy conditions, consider taking a shuttle or hiring a professional driver for certain excursions.
  • Altitude Considerations: Many parts of Colorado are higher, which may cause altitude-related symptoms such as headaches, dizziness, or shortness of breath. Stay hydrated, avoid excessive physical exertion during the first few days, and consider acclimatizing gradually by spending time at lower elevations before ascending to higher areas.
  • Respect the Environment: Colorado's natural beauty should be respected. Follow “Leave No Trace” principles by properly disposing trash, staying on designated trails, and avoiding wildlife disturbance. Be mindful of fire restrictions and follow guidelines for campfires and outdoor cooking.
  • Local Customs and Etiquette: Embrace the friendly and welcoming nature of the locals. Be polite, respect personal space, and use common courtesy when engaging with locals. It's also important to familiarize yourself with local laws and regulations, including those related to cannabis, as Colorado has legalized its recreational use.
  • Travel Insurance: Consider obtaining travel insurance that covers trip cancellation, medical emergencies, and weather-related disruptions. Check the policy details to ensure you have appropriate coverage for your specific needs.

This hike is listed among the top 5 short hikes by Uncover Colorado , but is packed with oh-so-scenic views. The trail itself is about 3.5 miles roundtrip and features panoramic mountain views, wildflowers, aspens galore, and unique rock formations, including one known as Paul Bunyan’s Boot. Gem Lake, the trek’s namesake, is a small basin consisting of rain water and snow melt boarded by a rocky granite backdrop. The lake was frozen solid when we went and colored the prettiest shade of baby blue. Time permitting, check out some other short loops within the park before your flight.

-Before you head for the airport , do yourself a favor and stop at Estes Park Pie Shop . You can’t miss their shop when leaving, because they have a huge sign that reads “You Need Pie.” Trust us, it is the perfect spot to refuel before your flight.

The Ultimate Colorado Winter Vacation

colorado trips in december

If you’re planning a winter vacation , head to the Rocky Mountains. Colorado is the number one skiing destination in North America, and for good reason. The state boasts some of the world’s best ski resorts, not to mention blue skies perfect for hiking nearly every day of the year . Yes, even when the ground is covered in powder.

With more than 30 different ski and snowboarding resorts in the state, each one offers a little something different from the rest. You can find trails for newbies to pros, for families or for solos. The state offers large, famous resorts and plenty of lesser-known hidden gems. And when you need a break from the slopes, there’s plenty more outdoor winter adventure , with tubing, ice skating, and snowshoeing.

Colorado’s ski season is longer than anywhere else in the United States, due mostly to the high altitude of some of the ski mountains. (The snow-making machines don't hurt, either.)

The state has higher ski resorts than anywhere else in the nation, which means incredible snow and views to match. For hard-core skiers, that also means some of the toughest runs in the world, as well as more vertical feet than anywhere else. Some ski zones perch as high as almost 14,000 feet above sea level.

There’s simply no comparison.

The first hills to open—not just in the state but across the entire country—are typically Loveland Ski Area and Arapahoe Basin (both start at around 11,000 feet above sea level). You can sometimes hit these slopes even before Halloween in mid-October. Go skiing in your Halloween costume, if you dare.

These high-altitude resorts stay open a lot longer than any others, too. A-Basin is always open through late May and sometimes all the way into July—it even has a party-like parking lot that’s affectionately dubbed “The Beach.” You can often hear music here, even before slipping into your skis. There are only a few months when you can’t go skiing at a resort in Colorado.

The most popular times to go are, naturally, in the winter: December through February is high season. If you want fewer lines, plan your trip early or later in the season, or visit on a weekday. Weekends in December, especially during the holiday break, are absolutely nuts. It can be tough to find lodging, and prices tend to be higher due to inflated demand.

Ski Resort Areas

Colorado’s numerous ski resorts are scattered up and down the mountain range, which is west of Denver and cuts through the state from north to south. While you can find resorts down south in Telluride and north in Steamboat Springs, a large chunk of the resorts are located just west of Denver along Interstate 70. Many resorts are close together and connected by public transportation, so you can hop from mountain to mountain; there’s a pass for that, too.

Colorado is home to some of the nation’s biggest ski resorts. You’ve probably heard of Vail ski area , with more than 5,300 skiable acres and 31 lifts, plus seven back bowls. High-end Aspen is famous, too. The Snowmass ski area isn’t as big as Vail, but the 3,300-plus acres and 21 lifts are no disappointment. Snowmass claims to have one of the highest vertical rises of anywhere else in the country and one of Colorado’s longest runs.

Keystone Resort is another large ski area in Colorado, with more than 3,000 acres spanning three different mountains.

Other big resorts in Colorado include:

  • Winter Park: This large resort is especially appealing to visitors because it’s easy to access. On weekends and select Fridays, you can take the Amtrak “ski train” straight from Denver's Union Station to Winter Park and not need to rent a car. SKI magazine named one of Winter Park’s peaks the No. 1 spot for mogul skiing in North America.
  • Breckenridge : This is a ski town for skiers, with crazy moguls and chutes, although it’s got trails for all levels. The downtown is absolutely charming, too. Breck is beloved by boarders because it helped pioneer snowboarding in Colorado in 1984—it was the first mountain in Colorado to permit snowboarding.
  • Copper Mountain : Copper is pretty large, too, spanning more than 2,400 acres.
  • Beaver Creek Resort : Just a few minutes from Vail, Beaver Creek sometimes gets lumped into the Vail scene, but it’s distinctly unique. Sure, it’s got that same luxury charm; the ski town itself is located inside a gated community. But the snow is worth it. Beaver Creek grooms its slopes 20 hours every day, so they’re as pristine as possible.
  • Buttermilk : This destination gets lumped in with Aspen, but again, it’s worth highlighting on its own largely because it hosts ESPN’s Winter X Games.

Beyond the big names, Colorado has some smaller spots worth exploring. These tend to be less expensive and have much shorter lift lines, too. Due to that, these resorts are popular among the locals. If you don’t like the crowds or the “commercial” feeling that has consumed much of the ski culture, these gems are for you.

A few smaller ski resorts to add to your winter bucket list include:

  • Wolf Creek : This is a local favorite because of the quality and amount (the average is a whopping 430 inches per year) of powder this small resort gets.
  • Howelsen Hill : As the oldest operating ski area in North America, this small, historic ski area has some of the best jumps in the state.

Getting There and Around

To begin your winter vacation in Colorado, you will need to fly into the Denver International Airport , which is unfortunately located way far east and quite out of the way. It’s not a close drive to any of the ski resorts, but once you touch the ground, there are several ways to get to a ski resort, depending on where you want to go.

If you want to ski in southern Colorado, you can save the drive and book a short flight to the small Telluride Regional Airport. There is also a small airport in Durango (not far from the Purgatory ski area). Aspen is also quite the drive (nearly four hours in clear traffic, which isn’t going to happen in the winter), so you may want to connect to the Aspen/Pitkin County Airport. It's going to cost a pretty penny, though.

If you want to visit any of the ski resorts up I-70 (such as Vail), you may need to rent a car. That depends on how much freedom you want to have. Ski areas, such as Vail, offer free public transportation throughout the town and often between resorts. In addition, many hotels offer free shuttles.

Unfortunately, due to the cluster of ski towns up the interstate, that also means a ton of traffic on that highway. Winter mountain traffic jams are no joke and can suck hours upon hours out of your day. They can even completely ruin your weekend and can cause you to deal with potentially snowy and icy conditions found on hairpin curves.

The worst times to try to fight the traffic are Fridays after work and Saturday mornings headed west and Sunday evenings (after 4 p.m. when most slopes close) headed east. Avoid I-70 during these windows, completely. Schedule your drive a day early or later, if possible. There is no real detour around the traffic, and it's unavoidable via car.

That’s why the “Ski Train” is popular among visitors who want to ski in the I-70 area. Amtrak offers an inexpensive train ride between downtown Denver’s Union Station and Winter Park Resort. It runs weekends and select Fridays during the winter and takes about two hours to get from Denver to the resort.

The Ski Train originally opened in the '40s and has experienced some evolutions and improvements over the years.

You can also find carpooling options and ski shuttles, but these feel the brunt of traffic just the same and can cost more than the Ski Train.

Despite the crowds, your winter trip to Colorado promises to be one full of stunning Rocky Mountain beauty, small-town American charm, and more than an ounce of adrenaline.

Colorado is one of the most beautiful places to visit in the entire country. Not only is it known for its beautiful ski slopes and ridiculously clean cities, but it’s also full of wonderful and welcoming locals! There are plenty of great things to do in the state of Colorado for people of all ages and skill levels. So, let’s take a look at exactly what you can expect when you will visit Colorado in December!

1) Pack For Different Kinds of Weather

Packing For Winter Travel

While temperatures can be pretty comfortable in the spring and summer months, you can expect the temperature to drop significantly across most of the state in December. On average, you can expect highs of 46 degrees (F) and lows of 16 degrees (F), though the exact temperatures you experience will vary by location. For example, if you’re visiting the Telluride Ski Resort in the southwest of the state, you can expect much warmer temperatures than you would get in Denver or even Aspen. In any case, make sure you pack plenty of extra layers. If you plan to ski, make sure you have the proper equipment to stay warm on the freezing slopes, too! And don’t worry – if you spend too much time on the ski slopes, Northwest Surgery Center is nearby to help.

Colorado Travel Resources

Colorado’s a big state, the eighth largest in terms of square miles at 104,094. It’s also a diverse state geographically, ranging from grassland plains to alpine tundra.

There are five physiographic provinces in Colorado. Each is unique in natural landmarks. They are divided by changes in the landscape. Often tourists consider Colorado all mountains, or all mountains plus Denver.

The physiographic provinces in Colorado include the:

  • Great Plains
  • Southern Rocky Mountains
  • Colorado Plateau
  • Wyoming Basin
  • Middle Rocky Mountains

Colorado Map Physiographic Provinces

However, during casual conversation, most Coloradoans refer to Colorado in 4 general regions , listed below from east to west. From here there might be a further distinction to a particular area within the bigger region, such as Southwest Colorado or the San Juan Mountains for the same area in the Rocky Mountains.

Eastern Plains

The Eastern Plains begin at Kansas or Nebraska and run west to the area known as the front range, a narrow north-south strip of the largest cities where the majority of the popular lives. The plains are quiet and the towns smaller. The Eastern Plains are all part of the Great Plains.

Some of the bigger named cities in the Eastern Plains include:

  • Fort Morgan

Eastern Colorado Plains near Fort Collins

This area ranges from 3,315 feet of elevation at its lowest point near the Kansas border, to around 5,000/6,000 feet as the high plains climb up the Rocky Mountains. It’s a dry high desert landscape, with agriculture as the main economy.

Front Range (Urban Corridor)

The term “front range” really means two different things in Colorado. It’s both the biggest cities at the edge of the mountains like Denver and Colorado Springs, which reside on the Great Plains. These cities are just west of the Eastern Plains distinction above. However, the Front Range is also referring to the mountains on the east side of the Continental Divide, known as the Front Range Mountains.

The largest towns on the plains region of the Front Range Urban Corridor include:

  • Fort Collins
  • Colorado Springs

Denver Skyline Front Range Colorado

This is really named the Front Range Urban Corridor and spans from Casper, WY south to Pueblo, CO. These towns lie on the Great Plains, along the edge of the Front Range Mountains. This is what most people are referring to when they use “front range” in conversation, towns at the base of the Rocky Mountains, north and south of Denver.

Most people arrive in Colorado via the Denver International Airport on the Front Range Urban Corridor. They fly completely over the Eastern Plains, with a seldom few driving east to explore. That leaves the Front Range as the most visited, with tourists flocking south to Colorado Springs , or north to Boulder .

Nearly every traveler comes to Colorado with the mountains in mind, so from Denver or Colorado Springs, people generally head west. Then, the further remote into the Rocky Mountains you get, the less crowded it is.

Southern Colorado/Base of Sangre de Cristo

After the front range mountains end by Pueblo, the Sangre de Cristo Mountains pick up in Southern Colorado and continue into Northern New Mexico. The towns at the eastern base beside I-25 include Colorado City , Walsenburg , and Trinidad . They are part of Southern Colorado and perhaps mistakingly, lumped into the front range. The towns residing in the mountains and on the western side of the Sangre de Cristos are part of the next group, “The Mountains.”

The Mountains

If you’re not living on the front range somewhere, which the vast majority of Coloradans are (2/3), then chances are pretty good that you’re residing up in “The Mountains”, short for Rocky Mountains. This vast landscape of peaks, forests, and high country ranges from the northern border with Wyoming south to New Mexico.

This includes a vast range of towns, which are based at varying elevations, usually starting around 6,000 ft and climbing up to 10,361 ft (3,158 m) in Alma, Colorado, Leadville is next at 10,152 feet (3,094 m).

  • Front Range Mountains

The whole front range would really span into the mountains on the eastern slope of the continental divide south until Pueblo. This area is the Front Range Mountains or Front Range for short. Heading south from here the Sangre de Cristo Mountain Range takes over as the Great Divide.

A few of the Front Range Mountain towns include (east side of the continental divide):

  • Idaho Springs
  • Buena Vista

Colorado Rocky Mountains Breckenridge Love Sign

Rest of the Rockies

Some of the other best-known mountain towns outside the Front Range Mountain, such as those on the west of the Continental Divide, or south of the front range in the Sangre de Cristo Mountains.

  • Steamboat Springs
  • Breckenridge
  • Glenwood Springs

Located on the western slope of the Divide, Summit County is less than 1.5 hours from Denver, making it the most popular tourist hub for the mountains, especially its county seat, Breckenridge.

A few of the biggest mountain ranges within the Colorado Rockies include:

  • Sangre de Cristo Mountains
  • Sawatch Range
  • San Juan Mountains

There are many sub-ranges within the above, such as the La Plata Mountains within the San Juans.

Western Slope (Colorado Plateau)

Technically, the Western Slope includes any mountain towns located on the western side of the Continental Divide (water draining west). This overlaps with a good portion of towns listed in the aforementioned “The Mountains”, including destinations such as Summit County, Winter Park, Pagosa Springs, and Aspen.

However, when most locals say western slope, they are referring to the far west region around Grand Junction. It’s part of the Colorado Plateau physiographic province, seldomly called the Western Colorado Plateau or Western Plateau.

When locals say “western slope” most are referring to Western Colorado nearby these towns on the west side of the Southern Rocky Mountains, the same as Boulder and Pueblo would be on the east side:

  • Grand Junction

Woman biking statue in Grand Junction CO Main Street

Thanks to Highway I-70 blasting through the heart of the state east-to-west, the mesas of the Western Colorado Plateau and Grand Junction are relatively easy to access in under 5 hours.

Major Landmarks in Colorado

There are a lot of ways to divide and section off Colorado based on topography and landmarks. Let’s look at some of the common lingoes of places and things you might hear about in Colorado.

Colorado Mountain Range Map

Here are some major landmarks in Colorado, in no particular order:

Continental Divide

This divides the Rocky Mountains between Colorado and determines whether the major rivers ultimately flow east or west. Will the water empty into the Pacific Ocean or the Atlantic?

Major Rivers

Affected by the side of the continental divide the waterway lies on, determines whether it will join up with a river heading west or east. There are countless creeks and river tributaries to the major rivers in Colorado.

Biggest Lakes

Colorado has hundreds of different lakes, some natural, and others manmade dammed reservoirs. Learn some of the biggest ones to get an understanding of where the aforementioned major rivers flow in and out.

Parks, Valleys and Basins

A park is a basin, which is a vast valley with a lot of lower land between mountain ranges. An example would be Middle Park, which contains most of Grand County. However, specific valleys can be within the greater park or basin. For example, the Fraser Valley (formed by the Fraser River) is located in southern Middle Park.

Colorado Basins and Parks Map

Here are some major parks and basins in Colorado, north to south:

  • North Park – Within Jackson County
  • Middle Park – Within Grand County
  • South Park – Within Park County
  • Upper Gunnison Basin – Within Gunnison County
  • Sand Luis Valley – Within Alamosa, Conejos, Costilla, Rio Grande, and Saguache counties

Colorado Summer Vacation Ideas

Colorado Trip Planner Summer Mesa Verde National Park

Despite its reputation for arctic-level winters, Colorado can get very hot during the summer. Temperatures of more than 100°F are heard of on the Front Range and Western Slope. It’s a dry desert heat so you’re not constantly sweating, however, it still can feel unbearable without A.C.

Most residents of the Front Range and lower-elevation towns cherish the Rocky Mountains as an escape. The highs in the mountains rarely exceed the 80°s, perfect for exploring. At night, temperatures drop quickly as the sun sets, and 40°s are common at high elevations. This is the season for exploring the Rockies’ vast collection of hiking trails .

Colorado Fall Vacation Ideas

Colorado Trip Planner Vacation Spot Mills Lake RMNP

Fall’s a true in-between season, where you’re camping under the stars during the first half and skiing over that said campsite in the second. Enjoy those final days of warmth before the sporadic and consistent cool weather settles in by November.

Autumn colors begin at the highest elevation places first, usually sometime in early September. This lasts for several weeks in each region, generally starting earlier to the north, such as Walden and Steamboat Springs , and beginning later in the season further south in Pagosa Springs or Durango . By the end of October, most of the colors have turned and leaves have fallen.

Colorado Winter Vacation Ideas

Colorado Trip Planner Winter Keystone Ski Resort Snowboarder

By the third week in December, it’s full-blown cold, and winter driving conditions are always to be expected. Snow’s usually in the forecast and if you’re looking for guaranteed powder and 100% open status on the trails, wait until January to plan your epic ski vacation. Head to Powderhorn or Purgatory to avoid crowds.

If you’re not the outdoor recreation type, consider a hot springs adventure . Aside from the trek to the mineral-filled pools, it’s an easy-going, luxury spa-type experience. There are dozens of hot springs around the state to choose from.

Colorado Spring Vacation Ideas

Colorado Trip Planner Spring Helen Hunt Falls Waterfall

Locals love their snowy activities, however, even the most die-hard snowboarder secretly loves to bask in Colorado’s spring paradise. Waterfalls are raging from snowmelt, and the summertime activities are beginning to offer themselves. By May, camping, rafting, and hiking are common talk at the office coolers.

You can usually ski through the whole spring season with an Arapahoe Basin pass if it’s a good regular season. By the final days at most resorts in early April, pond skimming is popular.

It’s a hilarious impromptu or organized event where skiers and snowboarders will ride over ponds on the ski slopes formed from melted snow. Arapahoe Basin has the best pond skimming in Colorado, available while it’s during its last weeks.

Colorado Trip Packing Checklist

Colorado Trip Packing Checklist Camping Tent

If picturesque Colorado beckons you with its incredible nature and challenging paths, our list of travel hints will definitely be helpful when preparing for this unforgettable trip. Unpredictable and erratic, the state is constantly surprising visitors with rapid weather changes and its bipolarity.

So, to properly enjoy everything that Colorado has to offer, follow the Scout motto “Be Prepared!” and take at least a week or two to explore it.

1. Decide When And Where To Travel

Snowmass Bike Park Single Track Autumn Aspens

Thanks to the state’s climate diversity, you can choose from a great range of activities, including everything from snowboarding and whitewater rafting , to camping and taking a scenic drive to the tourist attractions. Depending on what you pick, decide what season is more appropriate and research your costs.

If traveling without a guide, make sure you know where you’re going and how to get there, so mapping your route ahead of time would be a smart idea.

2. Make All Necessary Arrangements In Advance

Proper planning is the key to a successful trip, no matter where you go. Book the vacation and tickets, reserve the rental equipment, and confirm check-in time. If skiing or snowboarding – purchase your lift tickets beforehand, if driving – get directions or check them on your GPS device and make sure that all car maintenance is done, as well as the registration and insurance.

3. Pack Like For the Beach and the Mountains

Sunscreen, hat, and sunglasses or goggles – these three items will help you tremendously while you’re in Colorado. With a reputed 300 days of sunshine per year, they don’t seem so weird even though you’re coming during colder months. SPF 30 and a pair of sunglasses do make a life-changing difference indeed.

However, always bring layers and be prepared for winter weather. Snow and adverse conditions can come at any time including the height of summer.

4. Clothing Issues

Colorado Trip Packing Checklist Winter Skier Backpack

Choose comfort over fashion, bearing the variety of elevation and, eventually, the weather conditions in mind. That’s why the more multipurpose your outfit is, the better. Don’t underestimate the importance of layering up and packing clothes for all four seasons, as sudden temperature shifts are highly likely. In winter, try layers of breathable but warm clothing: sweatshirts, long-sleeved T-shirts, long underwear, waterproof pants, and coats.

Also, you can easily adjust to the changing weather and save space in the suitcase with such universal items as pants that zip off into shorts, swim trunks that can be worn as a pair of shorts, and walking shoes that look good enough for a party or dinner.

Don’t forget about comfy footwear that can cover mileage – an essential in Colorado, whether you’re gonna camping, hiking, biking, rafting, or just wandering around outdoors.

I visited Aspen, the most expensive vacation destination in America, for the first time. Here are 13 things that surprised me.

  • At the start of the 2021 ski season, I visited one of the US' most expensive ski towns: Aspen, Colorado.
  • Aspen is a luxury playground for the rich and famous where property sells for $8,000 a square foot.
  •  After spending a few days here, I thought it lived up to its wealthy reputation.

Insider Today

Nestled in Colorado's Rocky Mountains, Aspen is a small ski town known for vacationers with big budgets.

In April 2024, Travel and Leisure published the findings from an OptimosTravel study , which analyzed the cost of vacationing in more than 100 US vacation spots. At the top of the list was Aspen, with vacationers spending an average of $761.39 per person per day in the town.

And it's not the first time Aspen has made its mark as an expensive place to live and vacation. In 2022, Aspen was the world's most expensive ski town based on the listing price for prime ski property, according to Engel & Völkers , a global real-estate company. In 2023, the ski outlet SnowBrains named Aspen the most expensive ski town in the US.

Each winter, celebrities flock to the town to show off designer ski gear on the town's snowy slopes. I joined them in December 2021 and gained a taste of the town's lavish lifestyle.

At the start of the 2021 ski season, I headed to Aspen, where I discovered coffee shops selling prosecco and dog food on room-service menus. It added to the luxury and charm of Aspen, but I also found some surprisingly affordable things, too.

colorado trips in december

By the end of my trip, I learned that luxury is all in the details . It's when your hotel room has real plants instead of fake ones and when restaurants opt for cloth napkins over paper.

Those tiny elements cast a surprising spotlight on how Aspen had become such an expensive place to live and vacation. Here are the things that shocked me the most.

I grew up in Florida, so it may just be my roots showing, but I didn't expect people to be walking around the town in designer ski boots with skis perched on their shoulders.

colorado trips in december

As I booked my trip, I noticed that many hotels advertised themselves as ski-in, ski-out. I'd never skied before the trip, so I hadn't realized how literal that term was until I visited Aspen.

From my hotel room, I could walk just a few hundred feet and be at the base of Aspen Mountain, where I'd have access to 87 ski trails.

But even if people weren't staying in a ski-in, ski-out accommodation, they still seemed to be trekking across the town in their ski gear. Everywhere I looked in Aspen, people were heading to the lifts in their ski boots or were just off the slopes and biking home with their snowboards in tow.

Most of my waiters and waitresses could casually list off celebrities they said they'd met.

colorado trips in december

Celebrities flock to Aspen each winter, but I was surprised at how willing and eager restaurant servers were to share their celebrity sightings.

At the White House Tavern , one waitress told me she sent the musician Leon Bridges to the bar and mentioned Dua Lipa had recently stopped by for a meal.

At Ajax Tavern , our waiter said he'd seen A-listers, including Neil Patrick Harris, Arnold Schwarzenegger, and Katy Perry.

"In the winter, you're going to see celebrities every day," my waitress at the sushi restaurant Matsuhisa casually mentioned.

I knew to expect mansions, but touring Aspen's real estate gave me an entirely new look into how billionaires live.

colorado trips in december

During my trip, I met up with three real-estate agents who took me inside mansions listed between $27 million and $51 million.

I quickly learned that seeing an online listing for $44.5 million is entirely different than stepping inside a house priced that high.

In Aspen Park , I toured a sprawling 15,000-square-foot home listed by agent Carrie Wells. Inside the primary bedroom was an oxygen system that pumps air into the room to mimic different sea levels and reduce the effects of altitude sickness — a luxury that I didn't even know existed.

At The Peak House , Compass real-estate agent Heidi Houston walked me through a mansion listed for $45 million. One unique feature of the home was a secret bedroom and passageway that was built for the original owner's mistress .

These were amenities I couldn't dream of having in my own home.

I was shocked to find a coffee shop's fridge stocked with prosecco.

colorado trips in december

I was surprised to see miniature bottles of the bubbly next to cold-brew cans and coconut water in a coffee shop.

The shop also stocked orange juice, so, in theory, customers could make their own mimosas before the café closed at 2 p.m.

Other stores with luxe offerings also surprised me. For example, I popped into a store that sold cannabis next to $92,000 jewelry.

colorado trips in december

I knew designer stores would fill Aspen's streets. I expected to stumble into Gucci, Prada, and Louis Vuitton, but I didn't expect to find such ritzy dispensaries .

Then, I went to Dalwhinnie Farms. The dispensary calls itself a "boutique," and alongside rows of cannabis flower and pre-rolled joints are crystal glassware, cashmere, leather, and jewelry.

The dispensary was far from what I'm familiar with in my current home in Denver. There weren't any barred windows, weed-themed puns, or neon lights. Instead, it was elegant and seamlessly fit in with the designer brands that sandwiched the storefront.

Overall, it seemed as if Aspen took special care with its outdoor amenities. Water fountains and bicycle stations were covered for the winter season, which I'd never seen before.

colorado trips in december

I'd never seen a town protect its water fountains and bicycle stations the way Aspen does in the winter.

I'm more familiar with winter in New York City , where you can rent Citi Bikes year-round and Central Park's water fountains end up covered in snow.

In Aspen, the bicycle rideshares close, the bikes are stored away, and plastic covers are placed on the docking stations.

The same goes for the water fountains. Each water station I saw in Aspen had a snug cover protecting it from the colder temps.

Even the tiny, free libraries dotting the town felt like an upgrade, with hard-to-find New York Times bestsellers there for the taking.

colorado trips in december

I'm used to seeing Free Little Libraries, which are like mailboxes filled with free books, across my neighborhood in Denver. But I'm not used to them being filled with books that have sat on my Goodreads wish list for months.

After peeking inside the free library, I saw a copy of "The Vanishing Half," a book that's topped The New York Times bestseller list .

Any book that popular would be gone in a free library in Denver in minutes, I thought.

Art galleries filled nearly every street in the town.

colorado trips in december

A few Aspen locals gushed to me about how their town was known for so much more than skiing.

They bragged about the Aspen Art Museum's exhibit on Andy Warhol and listed off the small galleries filling practically every town block.

While Aspen is known for its nature, I was surprised to discover an equally strong emphasis on the arts.

I didn't expect there to be so much focus on food in Aspen, but my list of restaurant recommendations was long enough to last a season.

colorado trips in december

No matter who I spoke with as I explored Aspen, everyone seemed to know every restaurant in town, whether it was a luxury real-estate agent or a bellhop.

And almost every local I spoke with had a favorite.

I was urged to go to Clark's for seafood and told Steak House No. 316 served the best steak. A trip to Aspen wouldn't be complete without tasting sushi from Matsuhisa or having the wagyu burger at Ajax Tavern , I was told.

Food was clearly a significant part of the Aspen experience , I quickly learned.

While I wasn't surprised to see dogs in designer outfits walking the brick streets of Aspen, I was shocked to find dog food on a hotel menu.

colorado trips in december

As my stomach growled on my first night in Aspen, I eyed the room-service menu at my hotel, the five-star Little Nell .

A $21 French toast and a $25 Cobb salad were available and priced as expected, but there was also food available for four-legged friends. The menu advertised "Canine Delights Daily, 11 a.m. to 9 p.m."

The meals, which were served in dog-friendly bowls, included carrots, brown rice, scrambled eggs, and the owner's choice of protein and cost $19.

Though I expected pricey meals, I also discovered some affordable eats.

colorado trips in december

Within minutes after I arrived in Aspen, a sign advertising $8 burgers lured me into Aspen Pie Shop, a restaurant selling pizza, burgers, and sandwiches.

I enjoyed a $6 slice of pizza knowing that Aspen isn't just home to $25 entreés and $20 cocktails was a relief.

While the Aspen Pie Shop has since closed, later during my trip and on future trips, I've continued to find affordable eats such as a $9 sub or an $8 shot-and-beer drink deal.

Groceries also seemed to be reasonably priced.

colorado trips in december

My friend tagged along for the trip, and on our first night, we walked over to City Market, a part of the Kroger grocery chain, to grab a few snacks and breakfast items for the week.

We expected Aspen's groceries to be pricier than we were used to in Denver, but the prices were surprisingly comparable to what I buy back home at King Soopers, another Kroger chain.

For example, I often spend more than $1.25 per avocado and a $1 onion didn't catch me off guard. Other snacks, like chips and pretzels, felt similarly priced as well.

After a day in Aspen, I realized why the town felt so quaint. No building was higher than six stories, making way for stunning views.

colorado trips in december

I spent my first day in Aspen debating whether it was the snowy slopes or brick sidewalks that gave the town its charming appeal.

Then I realized it was the lack of skyscrapers — or really any tall building for that matter. I noticed that the vast majority of buildings in Aspen were just two or three stories high, and as a result, I always had unobstructed views of the sky and mountains.

I left the ski town with a new sense of how the rich and famous vacation and live. But even after stepping into a luxe dispensary and touring a $45 million mansion, I left confident that the everyday traveler can visit Aspen, too.

colorado trips in december

From food to real estate, my trip to Aspen was filled with luxury surprises around every corner.

I left the ritzy ski town aware that it isn't a cheap place to vacation but that it's also surprisingly not unattainable for the everyday traveler like me.

Between affordable beer-and-shot combos, meal planning, and cheap pizza slices, I'd happily plan a trip back — although I likely won't be able to afford a hotel that offers canine delights on its room-service menu.

I loved this little hike so much, I actually wrote my wedding vows here!

Distance:  6.7 miles Elevation:  764 feet Difficulty:  Moderate Red Tape and Local Tips:  None. Dog-friendly.

Lake Isabelle in the Indian Peaks Wilderness

Although this hike is much longer than it’s summertime counterpart, most of the walking is easy, snowy road walking. A long-time favorite for good reason, Lake Isabelle is a fantastic winter hike in Colorado that features a view of amazing glaciers.

Distance:  almost 11 miles Elevation:  1,030 feet Difficulty:  Moderate Red Tape and Local Tips:  You’ll be parking in the summer overflow lot and walking the road to Brainard Lake , then onwards to Lake Isabelle. Dog-friendly.

Bridal Veil Falls in the San Juan Mountains

Located just outside of Telluride, this multi-use trail is best hiked in the winter, when you aren’t sharing the road with Jeeps. Slowly make your way up to a stunning frozen waterfall for a real wintery treat.

As one of Colorado’s best 13ers to hike , Mount Sniktau makes a lovely winter hike.

For those who have experience spotting avalanche terrain and are looking to get experience summiting mountains in winter, Mount Sniktau is a great place to start. If you’re feeling strong, continue on to Grizzly Peak.

Herman Gulch Near Loveland Pass

The mighty Citadel Mountain is the stuff of legends. It’s dramatic couloirs and skyscraping ridge line are the prize for making it up Herman Gultch in the winter. As one of the most popular winter hikes in Colorado, this trail offers amazing scenery and a bit of a challenge.

Distance:  6.3 miles Elevation: 1,7554 feet Difficulty:  Moderate Red Tape and Local Tips:  Share the trail and watch out for backcountry skiers. Dog-friendly.

Carpenter Peak in Roxborough State Park

Roxborough State Park is the place to be after a dusting of snow has settled in the front range. The contrasting white snow with the red rock fins are absolutely jaw-dropping.

Catch a glimpse from above with the Carpenter Peak Trail. You don’t have to go far from town to get killer views!

Distance:  6.4 miles Elevation:  1,007 feet Difficulty:  Moderate Red Tape and Local Tips:  No dogs. You might want microspikes for the steeper sections.

Butler Gulch Near Jones Pass

Although the trail does go through some steep trees, the avalanche danger is somewhat limited on this skinning hot spot. You’re likely to run into skiers and riders here, so take care not to walk in the skin track (the obvious flattened ski trail).

This is a great outing right near Jones Pass that gets you up into the high alpine without a ton of effort. Just remember, the moderate rating still comes with a good amount of uphill – making this a somewhat more challenging moderate jaunt.

  • Distance: 5.5 miles lollipop loop
  • Elevation Gain: 1,814 feet
  • Difficulty: Moderate to strenuous
  • Estimated Time: 2.5-3 hours
  • Red tape and local tips: there is no parking at the trailhead. Park at the big dirt lot (likely snow-covered) right near the Henderson Mine, then walk up the road until you see the trail.

Colorado’s Most Difficult Winter Hikes

The most difficult hikes on this list of the best winter hikes in Colorado and even include the easiest winter Colorado 14er.

These hikes are for those who love a challenge but don’t intend on doing any mountaineering. They are the ultimate winter hikes for any seasoned Colorado hiker.

Maroon Bells Scenic Loop in Aspen

Rise and shine before the sun to watch the sunrise over the most iconic mountain formation in the state. As one of the best winter hiking trails in Colorado, the Maroon Bells Scenic Loop lives up to its namesake.

However, getting her in the winter is a really difficult endeavor – thanks to the roads being closed. The positives? You’ll see this uber-crowded locale without hordes of people.

Distance:  12 miles Elevation:  800 feet Difficulty:  challenging Red Tape and Local Tips:  There are a lot of rules here, please respect signs and regulations. Advanced reservations are required. No dogs.

Local Tip : The road now closes in the winter. This makes the journey about 12 miles round trip from the closed gate.

winter hikes in colorado

Mowhawk Lakes Near Breckenridge

This trailhead is home to a variety of amazing hiking trails in the summer, but it’s best known for the trail to Mowhawk Laks.

If you’re looking for sky-high views of the Tenmile Range, you’ll love the challenge of making it to Mowhawk Lakes.

Distance:  8.6 miles Elevation:  2,129 feet Difficulty:  Difficult Red Tape and Local Tips:  The Upper Mowhawk Lake may be inaccessible due to avalanche hazards. Dog-friendly.

Rattlesnake Arch Outside of Grand Junction

If you want desert solitude in Colorado, head to Rattlesnake Arch. This trail is long, crossing down and up two separate canyons before a brutal uphill grind. It’s one of the top Grand Junction hikes thanks to the changing scenery

My advice? Just keep going! Seriously, the end of this trail is a phenomenal canyon that is littered with arches as far as you can see.

Distance:  13.5 miles Elevation:  2,444 feet Difficulty:  Difficult Red Tape and Local Tips:  Dog-friendly. You’ll be using your hands in a few spots and navigation can get a little tricky without a trail so bring a GPS.

best backpacking trips in colorado

Bergen Peak in Evergreen

If you’re looking to train to hike a Colorado 14er, then you’ll love making your way up Bergen Peak in the winter (one of the best hikes in Evergreen ). Start at the Elk Meadow Park Stagecoach Trailhead and wander you way up this challenging winter hike in Evergreen. The views from the top are pretty amazing!

Distance:  9.4 miles Elevation:  2,100 feet Difficulty:  Difficult Red Tape and Local Tips:  None. Dog-friendly.

Mill-Castle Trail Near Gunnison

This long-haul trail located outside of Gunnison is an excellent choice for winter hikers in Colorado who also like to backpack. If you aren’t into backpacking, you can still catch plenty of stellar views just a few miles in, making this one of the most versatile winter hikes in Colorado.

Distance:  25.1 miles Elevation:  6,902 feet Difficulty:  Difficult Red Tape and Local Tips:  None. Dog-friendly.

Hiking in winter

Chicago Lakes Near Mt Blue Sky (formerly Mt Evans)

Sneak up to the base of Mount Blue Sky the back way on this scenic winter jaunt. The trail starts with a steep (and slippery) descent, then makes its way along the valley floor before gaining some serious elevation to Chicago Lakes .

Distance:  9.1 miles Elevation:  2,142 feet Difficulty:  Difficult Red Tape and Local Tips:  None. Dog-friendly.

Mount Royal Trail in Frisco

Okay, so this is more of a torturous uphill grind than a scenic trail (I personally prefer to rock climb to the top of Mt Royal), but the views from the top are quite lovely.

You’ll be treated to scenes of Frisco, the Dillion Reservoir, and the Gore Range after you reach the top of this easily accessible trail.

Mt Royal makes for a great option for those that want a quick, yet difficult hike.

Distance:  3.9 miles Elevation:  1,374 feet Difficulty:  Difficult Red Tape and Local Tips:  None. Dog-friendly.

Mount Quandary’s East Ridge

Looking to snag your first Colorado winter 14er? Mount Quandary’s East Ridge is where it’s at. The winter trail has one avalanche hazard to avoid, but otherwise, this will give a good idea about the endurance required for a winter summit.

This is an intense trail, and should only be attempted by those who have plenty of winter hiking experience and have summited a Colorado 14er in the summer.

Distance:  6.7 miles Elevation:  3,339 feet Difficulty:  Difficult Red Tape and Local Tips:  Be aware of adverse weather and avalanche terrain. This hike is dog-friendly, but it’s a lot to ask your pup to summit a winter peak, consider leaving Fido at home.

Winter Hiking and Understanding Avalanche Terrain

Here in Colorado, avalanche hazards are a super-serious issue. People die every year by being un-prepared. Before you head out on any winter adventure, be sure to understand avalanche risks and hazards.

There are free avalanche awareness classes you can take in Colorado to be in the know. If you plan on skiing or winter mountaineering, definitely consider getting your AIARE Level 1.

What Gear Do You Need for Winter Hiking

Winter hiking gear isn’t too different from summer gear. You’ll obviously want plenty of extra layers that are waterproof. This will help keep you warm in the winter as you stop for breaks or if bad weather rolls in. Your hiking boots should absolutely be waterproof. Other winter hiking gear includes:

  • Microspikes . These slip over your boots for traction and are a must-have for any winter trail.
  • Snowshoes . Ideal for the dead of winter when trails are fluffy and you’ll punch through the snow with just boots. Snowshoes are pricey, consider renting them first.
  • Trekking poles with snow baskets. If you want to winter hike, be sure to select trekking poles with snow baskets.
  • Noncotton layers. Layer up when you’re stopped, and wear less while you walk to regulate your body temperature.
  • Waterproof footwear. Don’t let your tootsies freeze by wearing waterproof boots when you hike.

Tips for Winter Hiking in Colorado

Winter hiking is a lot different than summer hikes. You’ll need to be extra prepared. I’ve written a complete guide to winter hiking for beginners to help you get started.

Migrant advocates fear some are being misled by Denver

D ENVER (KDVR) — The city of Denver reports it has served more than 41,000 migrants since they started arriving in late 2022, but in the last two weeks, efforts have pivoted to relocating them with offers of free trips to other cities.

Signs posted in Spanish at Denver Human Services tell them other cities may have resources to help them.

The city says of 350 new arrivals, 315 people have taken the option of a free trip elsewhere around the country, either to reunite with relatives or friends somewhere else or to settle anywhere but Denver.

Some migrant advocates said the city is purposely not telling newly arrived migrants they can choose to stay and be given shelter as an option.

Juan and Ediza arrived in Denver on Wednesday night after traveling from Venezuela since early December.

“A friend we knew from the jungle came here,” Juan said. “He got here first and got an appointment quickly to get settled.”

Denver is their first choice, so they went to the Denver Human Services offices for help.

“We knocked on the door, and they came out and said they could not help us, that all they could give us was a trip to another city,” Juan said.

Other migrants gave Juan and Ediza contact information for V Reeves, a known advocate for migrants settling in the city.

“Give V a call,” Juan said he was told. “At the very least, they can help you with something, and V has helped and we are very grateful.”

Reeves intervened in the couple’s efforts to get help from the city.

“If I hadn’t had certain connections and been able to call and follow up and cause a fuss, they would have been turned away and they would have been left back out on the streets with this child of just under 2 years old,” Reeves said.

‘This is the first time we’ve been separated in five months’

Juan and Ediza traveled across the continent with Juan’s cousin, his wife and their toddler. The families were separated when the city eventually sheltered them.

The couple was sent to a hotel, and Juan’s cousin’s family was sent to a city facility.

“This is the first time we’ve been separated in five months that we’ve been traveling, and I feel terrible,” Juan said.

The city said it offers trips as an option for new migrants arriving in town. Signage at Denver Human Services tells migrants other cities might have more resources for them and Denver will pay their way.

The city’s migrant dashboard reports 683 migrants staying in hotels and 26 staying in short-term shelters, and 48 migrants reportedly arrived in town on Thursday.

For the latest news, weather, sports, and streaming video, head to FOX31 Denver.

Wintry mix for Denver Friday, accumulating snow coming overnight in Colorado

By Callie Zanandrie

Updated on: April 19, 2024 / 8:04 AM MDT / CBS Colorado

Freezing drizzle and a wintry mix as well as colder temperatures greeted people in the Denver metro area Friday morning. Accumulating snow is coming overnight in Colorado.

While the Denver metro area won't see much in the way of accumulating snow Friday morning it will be a different story after nightfall. As the temperature drops, rain will transition into snow.

A total 1-4 inches of accumulation is expected for the Denver metro area with up to 6 inches possible west and south of the city.  The heavy snow will wrap up Saturday morning, but we could continue to see a wintry mix through Saturday afternoon.

If you thought Fort Collins' warm December was odd, you're right. Here's how weird it was.

colorado trips in december

Colorado weather is known for drastic swings, and 2023 was proof of that — especially in Fort Collins.

From the fourth wettest year in 134 years of city weather record-keeping to a snowless December not seen in two decades, the city saw it all.

Here's a look at some of the weather oddities, according to the Colorado Climate Center at Colorado State University. The city's official weather station is located on the main CSU campus.

Fort Collins had a very dry and warm December 2023

  • The city received no measurable snowfall in December, which is the first time that happened since 2002. Before 2002, it happened only three other times, the last of which was in 1935.
  • The city received 0.14 inches of precipitation, which fell as rain. It was the driest December since 2018.
  • The average temperature was 37.3 degrees, which was the warmest for December since 1980.
  • December reached above 60 degrees five times, including the high of 65 degrees on Dec. 6 and the last balmy day of 62 degrees on Dec. 21.
  • It never got colder than 15 degrees. That happened on Christmas night and was the highest minimum temperature for the month since the beginning of city weather record-keeping in 1889. Compare that to December 2022, when we dropped to minus 17 degrees, the coldest temperature recorded of any month since the 1990s.

Despite a dry December, 2023 was a wet one for Fort Collins

  • 2023 was the fourth-wettest year on record, ending with 24.36 inches of precipitation, which was 153% of our 1991-2020 normal of 15.88 inches.
  • The last wetter year was in 1997, the year of the Spring Creek Flood, when we received 25.23 inches.
  • The city's record for precipitation in a calendar year is 28.28 inches in 1961.

A look at the Colorado forecast for January through March

NOAA is predicting a greater than 55% chance of a strong El Niño January through March.

Strong El Niño winters have produced some big snow totals for Fort Collins , but those years have usually produced large late winter and early spring snowfalls as opposed to mid-winter storms.

But as of Jan. 3, Fort Collins has received 15.1 inches of snow this season with 9.3 inches coming Nov. 24-25 and 5.8 inches Oct. 28-29.

The statewide snowpack also is off to a slow start. As of Jan. 3, the statewide average is 67% of normal, with the South Platte Basin, which includes Fort Collins, Boulder and Denver, at 70% of normal.

Here is the National Weather Service's precipitation and temperature forecast for Colorado for January through March (issued Dec. 21, 2023):

  • 33% to 40% chance of above-average precipitation for those months for all of Colorado.
  • Equal chance of average temperatures for those months for all of Colorado.
