Cruise port schedule, live map, terminals, news.

St Johns Antigua cruise port

Region Bahamas - Caribbean - Bermuda

Local Time 2024-04-26 13:41

Port St Johns Antigua cruise ship schedule shows timetable calendars of all arrival and departure dates by month. The port's schedule lists all ships (in links) with cruises going to or leaving from St Johns Antigua, RCI Royal Beach Club. To see the full itineraries (ports of call dates and arrival / departure times) and their lowest rates – just follow the corresponding ship-link.

St Johns is a port town located in the West Indies (Leeward Islands, Caribbean Sea) as well as the capital city of Antigua and Barbuda. Located on Antigua Island's northwestern coast, the town has land area approx 10 km2 (4 mi2) and population around 22,000. St John's is also the country's commercial center and principal/main seaport.

Port St Johns (locode CASJF) has a deepwater harbour and capacity to handle the world's largest passenger liners . Major cruise companies (including RCI-Royal Caribbean , CCL-Carnival , DCL-Disney , Celebrity , Princess , and NCL-Norwegian ) visit St John's as port of call in their roundtrip itineraries operated by USA-homeported ships.

Tourists (passengers and crew) disembarking cruise vessels docked in St John's Harbour are handled at the terminals Redcliffe Quay and Heritage Quay.

Antigua Rum Distillery (at Citadel) has an annual bottling capacity of 180,000+ gallons. Other best-known tourist attractions include city's skyline (dominated by St Johns Cathedral), Botanical Garden, St John's Light (harbor's lighthouse), Fort James (at harbour's entrance), Fort Charles, Fort George, Fort Berkeley, Fort Barrington, Fort Shirley, Government House (19th-century residence building), large shopping malls and boutiques (selling top-fashion clothing and designer jewellery), museums, natural beauty, premium resorts. World-class celebrities (including Oprah Winfrey, Eric Clapton, Giorgio Armani) own private residences on the island. Besides tourism, another major industry is investment banking - some of the world's largest financial institutions have offices here.

In February 2019, GPH (Global Ports Holding / 2004-founded, UK-based company, world's largest cruise port operator) signed a 30-year exclusive concession deal with Antigua and Barbuda for cruise port management and retail shopping operations. A similar deal GPH signed with Cuba (for Port Havana ) in 2018. Part of the deal was that GPH will invest in improving the port's current retail shops and construct new retail and food-beverage facilities. GPH also handles cruise vessels anchoring close to Falmouth Harbour .

In mid-March 2019, CCL-Carnival updated its website removing all scheduled voyages to Antigua (St Johns) from November 2019 onwards. However, in April, Antigua and Barbuda's Government managed to convince the company to reverse its decision (to cancel all scheduled calls to Antigua and Barbuda) planned for 4 liners -  Breeze , Legend , Pride , Magic . Both parties signed a non-disclosure agreement preventing them from divulging information to the public. Carnival's decision would have resulted in heavy losses to the island's economy (millions of dollars) and would have affected not only the cruise port but also local tour operators, vendors, and other tourism-related businesses.

Following the Coronavirus crisis, in mid-April 2021, Crystal Cruises announced that Crystal Symphony ship's entire 2021 program in Europe-Mediterranean (June 6 through December 21) is canceled and replaced with 10-night "Luxury Caribbean Escapes" (roundtrip itineraries from St Johns Antigua) scheduled for the period Aug 5 through Dec 23, 2021. The new itinerary (first-time for Crystal Cruises) included as destinations Barbados (Bridgetown) , St Lucia (Castries) , Trinidad (Port-of-Spain) , St Maarten (Philipsburg) , BVI Tortola (Road Town) . Bookings opened on April 20, 2021.

Royal Beach Club Antigua (Royal Caribbean)

In late-May 2019, Michael Bayley (RCI's CEO) and Charles Fernandez (Antigua and Barbuda's Minister of Tourism, Investments and Economic Development) signed a 10-year agreement (USD 80 million), by which Royal Caribbean will double the number of cruise tourists visiting Port St Johns Antigua (up to 0,5 million annually) within 5 years. The deal included RCI also to develop the Port's cruise facilities via partnership between RCI's parent company RCG-Royal Group and Global Ports Holding Plc (serving the markets in Asia-Pacific, Caribbean, Europe-Mediterranean).

RCG completed the building of the new (5th) cruise berth in February 2021. The passenger traffic increased by scheduling regular visits by Oasis-class boats ( world's largest passenger liners ) each with max capacity 6300 passengers (plus 2150 crew). For the first year of operation (October-December 2021), Antigua Cruise Port's newest Pier 5 (USD 30 million project) had projections for ~285,000 ship tourists.

The RCG company also made investments into developing new shore-tour experiences (at Fort James) to enhance Antigua's attractivity as a travel destination. Fort James (at St Johns Harbour's entrance) was built in the 18th-century (1706-1773) by the British to guard the harbor from a possible French invasion. The fort is on a headland allowing great views of the harbor and the town (to the northwest). Fort's name honors James II and VII (1633-1701), King of England between 1695-88. Following the completion, the fort had 36 guns and barracks for 75 soldiers.

In late-October 2019 was announced the scheduled for 2021 launch of "The Royal Beach Club at Fort James" - an exclusive beach resort built along Fort James' beachfront. For this multimillion-dollar project, RCI signed an MoU with the country's government.

Following Royal Caribbean's investments in Antigua's cruise facilities and infrastructure, the country expects approx USD 80 million in direct revenue and USD 1+ billion in direct revenue over a 30-year period (2021-2051).

RCI's "Royal Beach Club Antigua" (as ashore experience) features perfectly maintained beaches, quality services, local food, live music, family fun activities, custom-designed attractions, watersports (jet skiing, paddle boarding, snorkeling), a resort-style complex with bungalows, cabanas, splash pool (family splash pad for kids), swimming pool (with a swim-up bar), beach BBQs.

RCI's Royal Beach Club admission is all-inclusive, covering water taxi transportation (to/from the resort), all food and beverages (including alcoholic), beach access (chairs, umbrellas), non-motorized watersports activities (swimming, snorkeling, kayaking, paddle boarding).

The first RCI liner to visit "Royal Beach Club Antigua" was Vision of the Seas (May 2021) leaving roundtrip from San Juan Puerto Rico . In early-April 2021, Antigua Cruise Port and P&O Cruises UK signed a deal for homeporting in St Johns the fleet's newest liner - Arvia , for winter seasons 2022-2023 and 2023-2024. Also in 2021 started two development projects related to the cruise port - Heritage Quay Shopping Mall (US$ 2 million) and Pointe Dock (US$ 25 million, to allow berthing to even the world's largest cruise liners ).

During season 2022-2023, Antigua Cruise Port handled 616419 passengers.

St Johns Antigua cruise terminal

Currently, Port Saint Johns Antigua has a max capacity of 4 large-sized ships at a time. Most cruise liners are berthed at Heritage Quay Pier - the newest and largest of the two quays. When the port has scheduled more than 4 vessels at a time, some of the ships are berthed at Deep Water Harbour Terminal. This facility is located approx 1,5 km (1 mi) from downtown. Sometimes, smaller-sized ships anchor at English Harbour (on the island's southern coast).

In 2018 was announced a port expansion project that includes dredging the main shipping channel, building a new seawall (harbor defense structure), new cruise berth (5th), land reclamation, renovation of the entire Heritage Quay area.

In mid-July 2019, RCG-Royal Caribbean (corporation) and Antigua and Barbuda's Government signed an MoU for building a new entertainment complex at Fort James area. The deal allowed Royal Caribbean to start construction works on the site.

Antigua and Barbuda's Government has long-planned "to develop Fort James facility and its precincts into a daytime leisure activity to support the cruise tourism business". Following the project's completion, a water taxi service will be introduced to transport cruise tourists from Port St John’s to Fort James' facilities.

Heritage Quay Terminal

The 2-story cruise terminal building has numerous duty-free shops selling electronics, jewellery, liquors, tobaccos/cigars, designer clothing and watches, local music, fine china and crystal, cosmetics, perfumes, sport equipment, swimwear. Shopping is easy as there are no restrictions once you prove your travel status.

At Heritage Quay Terminal there are also specialty restaurants and bars. Heritage Quay's last renovation was in December 2006.

Redliffe Quay Terminal

The second St Johns port's cruise ship terminal is located at one of town's oldest parts, dating back from the 17th century. The docking area used to be among the busiest Caribbean trading centers in the 18th century. Redliffe Quay Terminal has boutiques, bars, cafes, restaurants.

Beaches: Antigua is famous for the fact that there are 365 beaches – a different one for each day of the year.

St John’ Cathedral: major landmark. It dates from 1683 when it was just a wooden structure. It was rebuilt several times since then. Now it is a stunning building with impressive Baroque towers.

Museum of Antigua and Barbuda: explore the islands’ history. Located at Long Street.

Nelson’s Dockyard National Park: tour the area. You can also visit the Dockyard Museum and the Admiral’s House Museum. Another landmark of the park is the Clarence House.

Fig Tree Drive: if you have more time, you should definitely try it. The drive follows the southern coast of Antigua and you can enjoy the amazing local life going through fishing villages, farmlands or beautiful rainforest. ”Fig” is the local name for the banana tree.

Cruises from/to St. John's, Antigua

St. john's, antigua cruise port.

St. John’s is the capital of Antigua and Barbuda, and has a population of more than 20,000 people. This thriving and exciting city is Antigua’s chief port and it acts as the commercial center for the entire nation. Tucked within a pocket in Antigua’s northwestern coast, the town stretches for a little over four miles in all directions. Even the largest cruise ships are welcomed to dock right in the harbor because of its spacious crescent-shaped lagoon, and its deep coastal waters. The inner city has a number of tourist draws, including historical and artistic museums, as well as a number of liquor distilleries. The city skyline is dominated by breath-taking chapels, a lighthouse, and a fair amount of old fortresses. Quaint shops, restaurants and cafes line the busy streets, along with grand architectural houses that have been restored to near perfection. Saint John’s also famously has 365 beaches, one for each day of the year!

  • Saint John’s Cathedral dates back to 1683 when it was a humble wooden chapel. Today it is a magnificently decorative structure with Baroque towers.
  • Explore Betty’s Hope, a sugar plantation that was first established in 1674. The simple stone, windmill structure stands as a monument to the slaves the plantation exploited and mistreated for hundreds of years.
  • Old Fort James was built by the British in the 17 th century to protect the harbor from invaders. Today it makes for a good walking tour where visitors are often bowled over at the impressively large guns.
  • The wonderfully modern Museum of Antigua and Barbuda is a large estate that guides its visitors through the long and colorful history of the entire Caribbean area.

Antigua (St John's) Cruise Port Guide Review (2024)

Panoramic photo of the nelson's dockyard in Antigua, St John's cruise port

Everything you must know about Antigua (St John's) cruise port: where is the terminal and where cruise ships dock; top things to do, the best beaches, shore excursions, what's in downtown, how to get around, and all you must know to explore Antigua on a cruise.

By: Editor-in-Chief Update: February 12, 2024

Antigua is among the most popular destinations in the Eastern Caribbean cruise itineraries. Most cruise lines visit the island all year round, although the peak season is between November and May.

Thanks to its charm and diversity, there are many things to do in Antigua, an island state that appeals to visitors traveling on all cruise lines. Be it on the mega-ships of Carnival, Norwegian, and Royal Caribbean, or the intimate luxury of Regent, Crystal, Seabourn, or Silversea.

Antigua (St John's) cruise port is located on the northwestern coast of Antigua, in the capital city of St. John's. The terminal is situated close to the city center.

Most cruise ships dock at the Heritage Quay pier, which is within walking distance of the terminal.

If you're looking for things to do in Antigua, there's no shortage of options. Some of the top attractions include visiting beautiful beaches like Dickenson Bay, Half Moon Bay, and Jolly Beach.

You can also explore historic sites like Nelson's Dockyard and Fort James, or take a scenic island tour to see more of Antigua's natural beauty.

There are many shore excursions available from the cruise port, including snorkeling and diving adventures, catamaran cruises, and island tours.

If you prefer to stay closer to downtown, you can explore the colorful local markets, do some shopping, or sample the local cuisine at one of the many restaurants.

Getting around Antigua is easy and convenient. Taxis are readily available at the cruise terminal, and there are also shuttle buses and private tours available.

If you prefer to explore on your own, you can rent a car or scooter, although it's important to note that driving is on the left-hand side of the road in Antigua.

What's in downtown St. John's

  • Safety, emergencies, and basics

The paradisiacal beaches, the easiness to explore on your own, the natural beauty, and the historical landmarks are some of the unique features of Antigua, which appeal to all types of cruisers.

Amongst Antigua's top attractions, the Nelson's Dockyard , Shirley Heights , Betty's Hope Plantation, and Devil's Bridge are must-see sites to visit. St. John's is within walking distance of the cruise port and has a few interesting historical landmarks to explore on your own. And the beaches of Antigua are unanimously rated among some of the best in the Caribbean.

Where Ships Dock in Antigua

Cruise ships dock on a beautiful bay known as St. John's harbor, although many times referred to as Heritage Quay, which is, in fact, the name of the cruise terminal of the Antigua cruise port. Until recently, the port only had two piers perpendicular to the city of St John's (the Capital of Antigua). However, a third pier was built on the northern shore of the bay.

Currently, as many as five cruise ships may dock simultaneously in Antigua. The exit gates of all three piers are around 500 feet (150 meters) from the cruise ships' gangways. Be aware that port security will check your boarding pass at the gates to the piers on your return.

Because cruise ships dock at Heritage Quay, at no more than a 5-minutes-walk from the piers to downtown St. John's, the landmarks and attractions of Antigua's main city and capital are easy to reach on foot and comfortable to explore on your own.

What's in the Cruise Terminal

Once passed the exit gates of the Piers, cruise passengers will be on a sizeable open-air terminal known as Heritage Quay, but many do not realize that close by, there is a very quaint spot to explore - the Redcliff Quay.

Heritage Quay Terminal

Heritage Quay attracts many cruise passengers, with over 30 prestigious duty-free shops, a food court, and a casino. For those that love shopping when cruising the Caribbean, this is one the places to exercise your bargaining skills in stores such as the ubiquitous Diamonds International, Tanzanite International, or Colombian Emeralds but also others like the Body Shop, Sunglass Hut, and Goldsmiths.

To the right (facing St. John's), the cruise passenger shouldn't miss a visit to the Redcliff Quay, which is connected to the Heritage Quay by a boardwalk along the south shore of the deep-water harbor. Redcliff Quay (a quaint and elegant spot in St. John's) is a must-see, particularly if you like to taste local flavors.

Besides a good number of handicraft shops (and higher-end ones) ideal for buying gifts and souvenirs, there are a handful of cafes, bars, and restaurants to enjoy Caribbean delicacies but also Belgian waffles, Pizza, a glass of wine or just a bottle of Wadadli (the local beer).

Top 14 things to do and see on a cruise to Antigua (St. John's)

Antigua is a very safe cruise port for passengers, with many attractions to enjoy. Nelson's Dockyard is a top highlight for those who like to visit historical landmarks. For the most active, there are lots of thrilling activities. And the beaches of Antigua are as famous as numerous.

  • Don't Miss: Nelson's Dockyard, Betty's Hope Sugar Plantation, and Shirley Heights
  • Must See: Devil's Bridge (Natural Wonder) and Nelson Four Poster Bed (at the Dockyard Museum)
  • Must-Do: Dive in the amazing waters close to Falmouth Harbor. Sail aboard a catamaran. Discover coves, seclude beaches and uninhabited islands by kayak .

Getting around in Antigua

Getting around Antigua is easy, affordable and considering that English is the official language communicating couldn't be more straight forward. The local population is very friendly and not pushy. In fact, unless you ask locals for directions the residents of St John's will not approach the cruise passenger.

Within walking distance

The cruise terminal is right by St. John's and therefore there isn't a shuttle bus as all the historical landmarks of the city are within walking distance. More about Downtown St John's below.

Taxis in Antigua

In the Heritage Quay Terminal, you will find a Taxi Dispatch Kiosk with official taxi rates. Prices are reasonable and taxis are the best way to go to any of the fabulous beaches in Antigua. Most taxi-drivers are reasonably good guides as well and, considering the size of the island, can take you to most highlights in a half-day tour. Although drivers are required to show a rate card (fares are officially fixed), make sure you agree on a fare before entering the taxi. For a half-day tour, you shouldn't be paying more US$ 120 (for the taxi with as many as 4 passengers).

Renting a car is not the best solution unless you are familiar with driving on the left and are willing to discover your way around as roads are poorly signed. Besides, a temporary driving license will be imposed ($20) in addition to a minimum of $50 for a one-day rental.

Outside the Heritage and Redcliff Quays, you will find yourself in downtown St. John's. This small town (with around 30,000 souls) has a charm of its own and safe to walk around and explore on your own. Locals go about their business and will not harassing visitors but if you need any help with directions they are very friendly.

Landmarks, churches and museum

Within walking distance, less than 10-minute walk from the pier, the Anglican St. John's Cathedral is a must-see, which has been under restoration for some time. As you sail into St. John's the magnificent towers dominated the skyline and you will see these baroque structures as you walk around.

St. John's Cathedral, Antigua

Close by, on the corner of Market and Long Streets, the old courthouse (dating back to 1750) is now occupied by the small but interesting Museum of Antigua and Barbuda.

Walking the main streets of St. John's, the cruise passenger will not miss imposing buildings such as the Ebenezer Methodist Church on St. Mary's Street, and numerous banks with well-known international names. But you will need to walk to the end of Market Street (to the south) if you would like to explore a typical West Indian Public Market with its colorful stalls and lively bargaining.

Interactive world cruise map, home | cruise ships | port expenses | hints and tips, saint johns antigua cruise port guide.

Cruise ships sail right into the heart of Saint John's, the largest town on the island of Antigua. Capable of welcoming four large ships at a time, the small town can get very busy at times. Most cruise ships dock at Heritage Quay . Most St. John’s attractions are an easy walk from Heritage Quay.

Some ships also moor up at the adjacent Redcliffe Quay , which is more atmospheric with its old Georgian buildings housing cafes and boutiques.

When several ships are in port, some dock at the Deep Water Harbour Terminal, 1.5km from St. John’s. From there, you can either walk or take a taxi. A few smaller vessels drop anchor at English Harbour, on the south coast.

As of July 2020 a new cruise pier has been completed, ready to accommodate Oasis-class ships.

Cruise ship passengers who are "in-transit" and stay less than 24 hours are not required to present a visa.

Sightseeing:

The skyline of St. John's , the capital and largest city of Antigua and Barbuda , is dominated by the magnificently evocative white baroque towers of St. John's Cathedral. Built in 1845, the church is now in its third incarnation, as earthquakes in 1683 and in 1745 destroyed the previous structures. The towers are the first sight of Antigua for about half of the island's visitors each year, many of whom arrive by boat. With its recently completed cruise ship dock and several hotels, St. John's is a lively hub for shopping and dining.

Tours Excursions Transportation:

The Barbuda Express is an innovative wave-piercing design giving maximum passenger comfort at high speed and a journey time of 90 minutes in nearly all weather conditions. It runs 5 days a week between St Johns and Barbuda.

Taxis are available throughout Antigua. Fares between the airport, harbor, and many hotels and destinations are fixed and can be obtained upon arrival. Sample fares from V.C. Bird International Airport to: Nelsons Dockyard--US$21; Shirley Heights--US$21; St. John's--US$7. Taxi drivers are also qualified as tour guides for sightseeing trips. Tour rates can be obtained via above link. Hourly rates for jobs of not less than 2 hours: US$24.00 or EC$64.00 per hour. Waiting time: US$5.00 or EC$12.00 per ½ hour.

Renting your own car can get expensive, because you must purchase a $20 temporary driving permit in addition to the car-rental fee.

Nearby Places:

There are 365 beaches on Antigua, one for each day of the year. The great majority rest inside the calm, protected waters of the island's Caribbean side. All are open to the public, and so the challenge posed to a visitor is not how to gain access to the best of them but simply how to locate the beach that suits one's taste. Exploring on your own is the best way to do this, although it is wise to bring a companion along to particularly isolated locations. Antiguans are understandably reluctant to divulge their own favorites, so here are a number of good starters. Be sure to acquire specific directions before you go. The easiest way to get to the beach is to take a taxi ; many of them will offer to pick you up at a specific time to take you back to the port.

The Antigua Rain forest Canopy Tour is a unique eco-tour through Antigua's lush rain forest where you embark on an unforgettable journey through the verdant forest, high above the trees.

Nelson's Dockyard and the English Harbor is one of the premier tourist attractions in Antigua and no visit to the island would be complete without seeing the restored Georgian yard named after the famous English Admiral Horatio Nelson.

Shopping and Food

Immediately off the boat, you'll face two indoor/outdoor malls for duty-free shopping -- Heritage Quay and Redcliffe Quay, as well as several stalls of local crafts and souvenirs. Heritage Quay is a shopper's paradise, offering two floors of a wide array of duty and tax-free merchandise for travellers looking to cash in on amazing value and savings from retail prices of Europe and the USA. Electronics, local music, cigars, liquors, fine crystals & china, designer clothing & footwear, swimwear, sporting equipment, fragrances, skincare cosmetics, fine jewellery, high-end watches, and other souvenir items are just a sample of the goods available.

On Friday and Saturday mornings, be sure to visit the vibrant farmers market on the southern edge of the city. Folk crafts, colorful tropical fruits, and a buzzing crowd make for a lively morning.

Antigua uses the Eastern Caribbean Dollar (E.C.), although most of the vendors in town will readily accept U.S. dollars.

St John’s Antigua Cruise Port: Everything you need to know

M y name is Sara and I’ve spent the last 3 winters living in Antigua with my family.  We come each year as my boyfriend is a yacht captain and the boat he works on is based in Antigua.  We’ve joined in with the local community, especially as our sons go to school on the island.

I’ve also worked on cruise ships as  I used to manage the spa outlets on all of the P&O and Cunard cruise ships.  So I know how exciting a port day can be!

I’ve gathered my insider tips and knowledge for a day in Antigua.

Where is St John’s Cruise Port Antigua Located?

The cruise port is located in Deepwater Harbour which is in St John’s.  St John’s is the capital of Antigua.  It’s right in the town and you can walk there very easily.

How to Get to the City of St John’s from the Cruise Port

It’s very easy to walk to St John’s from the cruise port as the ships dock in the town itself.  Once you disembark the cruise ship and leave the terminal you are in the town.  You’ll be by Heritage Quay which is the main shopping area.

Are there Free Shuttles from St John’s Antigua Cruise Port?

There are no free shuttles as there is no need for them as you can walk there.

Can you walk into St John’s from your cruise ship?

Yes, as the town is at the end of the cruise ship terminal.  You will walk to St John’s to be able to take any tours or taxis to leave the cruise port.

Are there taxis available from St John’s Antigua Cruise Port?

Yes, there are a lot of taxis in St John’s Antigua that will be waiting to take you to explore the island.  You’ll find them generally on Heritage Quay which is at the end of the ship dock.

✅ You should confirm the price of your taxi before you leave St John’s.  Also, depending on where you go, you might want to ask the taxi to wait.

There is no Uber on the island and getting a taxi outside of the main tourist attractions can be tricky.  Most people tend to book their drive for the day and ask them to wait as they visit different locations on the island.

Best Shore Excursions From St John’s Antigua Cruise Port

There are three ways to explore Antigua.

  • You can hire a taxi for the day following your own itinerary and their recommendations.
  • Rent a car and drive yourself.  This will give you a lot more flexibility and will be better value than hiring a taxi all day.
  • Take a shore excursion and there are plenty to choose from.

I’ve selected some of the cool places and activities to do in Antigua and listed them below.

Things to do in Antigua

Walking tour of st john’s.

This is ideal if you want a more relaxed port day and don’t want to travel too far.  St John’s is small, however, there’s enough to see and do to keep you busy for a couple of hours.

If you’re keen on the history of the town then you can visit the Antigua and Barbuda Museum, walk to the Cathedral, and then take in Old Recreation which is the old cricket ground.

For those of you who enjoy shopping, there is Heritage Quay for jewelry and tax-free shopping.  Or Redcliffe Quay for more local clothing and art.  You’ll also find in both quays a variety of bars, cafes, and restaurants to enjoy and people-watch from.

⭐️ Check Prices and Availability Here

Take a Cooking Class

If you’re into the tastes of the Caribbean, then why not take a cooking class? Nicole’s Table is the best in Antigua and she offers a variety of different classes.  She covers cooking with jerk flavors, making local curries, and dishes from the sea, and cooking with rum.

⭐️ I’ve tried her jerk class and it was super tasty! Check availability here!

Visit Stingray City

This is one of my must-do things in Antigua – swimming and feeding the stingrays .

Antigua is one of the only places in the world where you can swim and interact with stingrays.  ( You can visit them in Grand Cayman too !) Whenever friends and family come to visit it’s the number one experience that I encourage them to try.

During the tour, you are taken out to a remote pontoon on the edge of a reef where the stingrays congregate for feeding.  Your guides will help you into the water and encourage you to snorkel around them.

You’ll also have an opportunity to feed them and to carefully hold one in the water.  They also have a professional photographer at hand to capture the moment for you. so you’ll get a great photo of you with a stingray!

⭐️ Book Early, Check Availability Now

Snorkeling or Scuba Diving Tour

Antigua is a fantastic place to visit if you want to see turtles, rays, and much more.

If you’re a snorkeler the easiest way to get to see them from the cruise port is to take a boat tour.  Most of the good spots on the island require a boat to reach them.

There are lots of different tours to choose from.  I’d particularly recommend Eli’s Eco Tour as you get to spend a good amount of time at some great locations in the north of Antigua near the cruise port.

For those of you who scuba dive , there are several dive centers on the island to choose from that can also offer courses.

⭐️ Book Snorkeling Here or Scuba Here

Nelson’s Dockyard

If local history interests you then the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Nelson’s Dockyard is fantastic.  It’s a restored British naval base, and yes, it’s where Nelson was based for a time.

It’s an open-air museum so very interactive and great for all ages, plus an actual museum space as well.  Plenty of tour companies run from the cruise port to Nelson’s Dockyard, or you can drive yourself and follow the sign inside.

There’s also plenty of space to stretch your legs or let little ones run loose.  And lots to see it’s still an active marina today, you can also watch yachts and their crew come and go.  You can even walk up to the old fort and get an incredible view back over the marina.

✅ This is the top rated Historical Tour in Antigua

Rum Making Masterclass at Galleon Beach

If you’re looking for something a little different, and want to combine snorkeling at a beach, with one of the best restaurants on the island and some rum tasting then this is the day out for you.

Galleon Bay is located in the south of the island and whilst it’s got a very chilled-out vibe, it’s got a lot to keep you busy for the day.  There’s fantastic snorkelling at a couple of wrecks which are located just off of the beach and you’ve got a good chance of seeing turtles!

In the middle of the beach is Loose Cannon Bar and Restaurant , which serves some of the best beach food on the island – we eat there a lot, and so I’ve tasted most of the delicious menu.  As well as this, there’s a rum-making masterclass workshop behind the restaurant where you can blend your own rum!

A fun, and alternative way to spend a day!

⭐️ Check Availability for the Rum-Making Course

If you enjoy a bit of an adrenaline rush whilst you’re away, and are happy to fly through the air on a zipline , then this is the activity for you.  Located in a tropical rainforest , it’s not only fun but beautiful too.

They have a variety of different packages that you can choose from depending on how many zip lines you want to ride and if you want to add on the high-wire assault course at the end.

It operates in a tou r with set times so you complete the zip lines in a group.  The guides are very knowledgeable and make sure that you are comfortable so it’s suitable for total beginners and those scared of heights (like me!).  Plus they take children from 4 years old upwards so it’s fun for families too!

Explore A Beach Or Two

Antigua has over 365 stunning beaches to choose from , so you’ll be sure to find a beach to suit your needs.

Best for snorkeling – Galleon Beach or Lon Bay

Top for restaurant choice and activities – Dickenson Bay

Fun for families – Galleon Beach or Pigeon Point Beach

Best for off-the-beaten track – Rendezvous Bay or Half Moon Bay

One of the easiest ways to explore the beaches is on a land tour where they’ll take you a few different ones in a day.

Getting From The Airport To The Cruise Port

The closest airport to the cruise port is VC Bird International Airport which is 8.3km away.  The easiest way to get there is to take a taxi.  There is public transport, however, it’s not direct and so I wouldn’t recommend it.

Places To Stay Near St John’s Antigua Cruise Port

Antigua is renowned for it’s amazing all-inclusive resorts, so you’ll find lots of them to choose from, ones that are adults only, some that suit families, and even ones that cater to nudists.

If you’re looking for somewhere to stay near St John’s, then these three are three places come highly recommended:

Royalton Antigua – just 4km from the cruise port, this family-friendly all-inclusive resort is extra special as they have wonderful sea villas that you can choose from and butler service.

Sandals Antigua – only 5km from the cruise port, this adult-only resort on the beach on Dickenson Bay, right in the middle of the action.  I’ve recently had friends who stayed there and said that they would highly recommend it.

Blue Waters Resort – slightly further away than the other two at 8.5km, this family-friendly luxury all-inclusive resort to the north of St John’s is well worth a visit.  We’ve been there ourselves on day passes to use the facilities and it’s a brilliant resort.  It’s got some great sailing equipment, a few different pools to choose from, and delicious food.

Antigua Quick Facts

  • English is the official language of Antigua and Barbuda.  They also speak Antiguan Creole which is an English-based Creole language spoken widely in the Leeward Islands which includes Saint Kitts, Nevis, Anguilla, and Montserrat.
  • The currency of Antigua is the Eastern Caribbean Dollar (XCD) more locally called “EC”.  You’ll find that most things will be priced in EC, and higher-priced items such as tours and accommodation will also be advertised in US dollars.

Antigua is a popular country on the Caribbean cruising routes, and you’ll find up to 5 ships in the cruise port at any one time.

The benefit of this is that there are lots of different tours that you can take from St John’s, and many taxi drivers are ready to haggle for a day price to drive you around the island.

If you’re not looking to travel far, then you can relax in St John’s as the cruise port is conveniently located on the edge of the town.   You can easily walk to the town to take in some Antiguan history, shopping, and tasty food and drinks.

If beaches are more your thing, then the nearest is about an hour’s walk from the cruise port at St James Fort.  However, there are plenty of tour operators happy to take you to explore the other beaches.
