Greek Isle Beauty

Explore greek isle ports.

Piraeus (Athens), Greece

Step back in time on your cruise to Greece. Visit the Parthenon, the Temple of Athena Nike, and other ancient ruins. Follow your tour with an open-air dinner in the Plaka neighborhood.

Crete (Souda), Greece

On the northwest coast of the island of Crete, Souda beckons with a romantic Venetian harbor, Old Town’s tangle of streets, and a 500-year-old lighthouse.

Katakolon (Olympia), Greece

The region reveals what it means to be Greek: traditions that go back thousands of years, simple but delicious and healthy cuisine, towering mountains, and crystal blue seas.

Mykonos, Greece

Mykonos is a top choice among the glamourous. Chic tavernas with open terraces line the sea and after the sun dips down, the island sizzles with youthful energy.

Kerkira (Corfu), Greece

Come ashore to Corfu on your Greek Islands cruise, a muse for some of history’s most notable writers. Be inspired with a swim in its azure waters or wander verdant, cypress-dotted hills.

Rhodes, Greece

Even without its immense Helios statue, Rhodes remains one of the most-visited Greek islands with its white-sand beaches, glittering coves and fascinating ruins.

Thira (Santorini), Greece

Santorini has a dizzying array of archeological treasures, sun-bleached villages and world-renowned wines. To top it all, it’s home to one of the most beautiful volcanic calderas in the world.

Gythion (Sparta), Greece

Once the port of ancient Sparta, this lovely fishing town draws its name from gi theon, which means “land of the gods” in Greek. It’s the entryway to the rugged, mountainous realm of the Spartans—the fiercely independent people who rejected foreign rule time and time again.

Kavala (Neapolis), Greece

Northern Greece is often overlooked as a Greek Isle cruise destination, and many will not even have heard of the Macedonian port of Kavála. But the city, and the region it opens into, are both picturesque and culturally important, with a history that encompasses classical times as well as the more modern era.

Mytilene, Nisos Lesbos

Lesbos, Greece is well known for olives and ouzo production, and visitors can see evidence of both everywhere. The island's charms extend beyond those pleasures, though: It’s a beautiful place of open plains, sweeping hills, and sandy beaches with views of Turkey across the water.

Pylos, Greece

Pine-covered hills wrap around the lovely town of Pylos (often referred to as Navarino, its Italian name), in the Messenia region of Greece's Peloponnese. Cobblestoned streets lead down to the harbor, where outdoor cafés overlook the bay. This pleasant scene, however, belies a turbulent history.

Greece and Greek Islands Cruises

Greece, the birthplace of philosophy, the Olympic Games and Western literature, offers an incomparable insight into ancient history and cultural heritage. No exploration of the Mediterranean is truly complete without MSC Greek Island Cruises, which journey through some of the most breath-taking landscapes this part of the world has on display.   Athens , the capital of Greece, has been inhabited for over 3,000 years. Discover more about these ancient roots at archaeological sites such as the Parthenon temple, a symbol of the city and of Greece. Located at the top of the Acropolis, it’s one of the most important cultural monuments in the world.   But beyond the borders of the ancient city are the Greek islands that can only be properly seen on one of our Greek Islands cruises. One-fifth of Greece’s territory is made up of more than 3000 islands, famed the world over for their fantastic variety of beaches. Ranging from extensive white sand beaches to tiny bays surrounded by steep, ocean carved cliffs, there’s a hidden cove for every visitor.   Sail with us on the MSC Greece and Greek Islands Cruise 2024 - 2025 season and you will discover magnificent places such as Mykonos , an eye-catching, white-and-blue stone city offering a fantastic nightlife, or Rhodes , with its old town centre where you can sample delicious Greek yoghurt, served with fresh honey and walnuts.   Throughout the year, there is also a host of cultural and folkloric events that are not to be missed. For visitors, these are an opportunity to enjoy the typical music and dancing, all making for an unforgettable holiday with MSC Greece cruises.   Book an MSC Mediterranean voyage  that includes Greek Islands cruises today, and you’ll experience Greece, its islands, and a truly memorable holiday.

Best Greece cruises: Top 5 ships sailing the Greek isles

Ashley Kosciolek

From ancient mythology to wine and olives, there's a lot to love about Greece . There's something magical about the contrast between the deep-blue waters of the Aegean Sea and the ancient ruins and white buildings found on the Greek islands.

The best Greece cruises offer a well-rounded mix of islands and key Greece destinations: Athens for its ruins, Santorini for its blue-roofed churches, Mykonos for its shopping and nightlife, and Rhodes for its palace and charming cobblestone streets. You might even luck out and snag a visit to places like Turkey or Montenegro, too.

If you're not sure which ships to consider, here's a list of the best cruises to Greece for different kinds of travelers.

Note: Prices were accurate at the time of publication; they're subject to change without notice.

Best Greek isles cruises for families: Disney Dream

cruise to greek island

Disney Cruise Line is ideal for families. If a Disney cruise to Greece with kids sounds appealing, Disney Dream is the ship that will take you there.

The vessel isn't the line's newest, but it's also not the oldest, and you'll still find plenty to do on board. The 2,500-passenger ship's small size means it's easy to learn your way around. Even better, Disney Dream is typically more affordable than the line's newest vessels.

Dream offers jaw-dropping entertainment and daily character appearances, which means your children likely won't be bored on the ship. Its magical kids clubs feature a replica of Andy's room from "Toy Story" and the Millennium Falcon's cockpit from "Star Wars." (Expect surprise visits from R2-D2 or a squad of stormtroopers.)

Also, Greece is wrapped in tons of ancient history to spark your family's imagination. For example, in Athens, you might choose to take a guided tour of the Acropolis, followed by a "day in the life of an archaeologist" experience, where you'll search for treasures in a faux archaeological dig.

If the kids prefer something sportier, they might enjoy an excursion that takes visitors to the Panathenaic Stadium for a tour and a talk about the first Olympic games of the modern era.

Disney Dream sails five-, seven- and nine-night voyages from $322 per person, per night, for a windowless inside cabin. Some itineraries sail round-trip from Rome, while others cruise one-way between Rome and Barcelona with calls on Athens, Mykonos and other ports in Greece.

Best adults-only Greece cruises for party animals: Resilient Lady

cruise to greek island

If you enjoy a lively megaship party atmosphere but you don't want an environment that's overrun with kids, Virgin Voyages ' Resilient Lady will likely be the best Greece cruise option for you.

Although Virgin's Greece itineraries are pretty standard, its onboard experience is what sets it apart in the region.

The adults-only ship combines a casual vibe with a ramped-up nightlife. You'll find passengers dressed like mermaids, crew dressed like drag queens and performers that more accurately represent a cross-section of real life than those whom you'll find on most other lines' vessels.

As part of what just might be the best entertainment at sea , nighttime shows run the gamut from lounge singers and seemingly impromptu atrium dance parties to secret below-deck visits to the "crew bar" for a drink. There's also Scarlet Night — a rave-like pool-deck dance party where everyone wears red.

If that's not wild enough for you, there's also an app that lets you order Champagne to wherever you are on board, free fitness classes that encourage you to dress up in your '80s best and even a tattoo parlor so you can make some bad decisions.

Resilient Lady sails seven-, 10- and 11-night cruises from Athens, starting at $145 per person, per night, for an inside cabin. The voyages feature a mix of stops in Greece (including Santorini and Rhodes and an overnight in Mykonos), Croatia, Turkey and Montenegro, depending on the specific itinerary you choose.

Best budget-friendly Greece cruises: Rhapsody of the Seas

cruise to greek island

Want to check out Greece but have limited funds? Although you'll have to factor in potentially expensive flights to Europe to board, a voyage on Royal Caribbean 's Explorer of the Seas could be right up your alley.

The vessel is one of Royal Caribbean's oldest ships — it debuted in 2000 — but that doesn't mean you won't find fun onboard activities such as trivia, pool games, nightly theater performances, game shows, dancing and live music.

The best part if you're on a budget is the price. You can snag sailings of six, seven or eight nights from just $85 per person, per night, for an inside cabin. These cruises sail either between Rome and Athens or between Barcelona and Athens, or round-trip from Ravenna (the port for Bologna, Italy). Voyages include calls on Athens, Santorini and Mykonos, as well as ports in Cyprus and Turkey.

Best small-ship luxury Greece cruises: Windstar's Wind Star

cruise to greek island

Windstar Cruises ' namesake, Wind Star, is a 148-passenger masted sailing yacht that offers a special Greek islands experience because it calls on some of the area's smaller ports in addition to Athens.

The ship is great for sailing aficionados. Because of its small size, it can visit smaller ports that larger vessels can't access. (Think Monemvasia, a town carved into rock, and Gythion, where you'll find caves and lovely beaches.)

Also, Wind Star is an upscale ship, which means you'll find elevated dining and service on board. All cabins offer at least one window. When you purchase an all-inclusive fare, Wi-Fi, gratuities and alcohol are rolled into the price.

Among other itineraries, the vessel sails weeklong cruises between Athens and Rome that call on Monemvasia and Gythion in Greece, as well as several ports in Italy. Rates start from $300 per person, per night, for an outside cabin.

Best locally based Greek isles cruises: Celestyal Journey

cruise to greek island

Celestyal Cruises is a line you don't hear about too often, but it's based in Greece, which means it has a unique perspective on Greek island sailings.

If you're looking for a cruise vacation that's full of local Greek flair, check out the brand's Celestyal Journey. The ship isn't new, but it's new to the line. Following an extensive refurbishment, and its Celestyal debut in late 2023, it's the youngest member of the line's fleet.

Holding about 1,200 passengers, Celestyal Journey is small enough that you'll still receive a personalized experience but large enough to offer a multitude of onboard amenities. Enjoy yourself at the spa and fitness center, eight bars, seven restaurants, a chef's table experience and two pools. The ship offers 630 cabins, including 149 balcony cabins, 120 junior suites and 28 full-fledged suite accommodations.

Itineraries offered by Celestyal Journey range from four to 28 nights, departing from either Athens or Thessaloniki. Most voyages include calls on well-known Greek ports like Santorini, Rhodes and Mykonos, while longer sailings also venture to places in Turkey and Montenegro. Prices start from $89 per person, per night, for an inside cabin.

Bottom line

The best cruises to Greece combine a mix of fascinating destinations with a ship that fits your budget and travel style. If you're still unsure which cruise to choose, check with a knowledgeable cruise travel agent who can help you sort through the options.

Why Choose a Greek Islands Cruise?

Cruising might often be seen as a luxurious escape, a retreat from the world where your every need is catered to.

However, when it comes to the Greek Islands, cruising becomes more than just luxury; it’s a gateway to a mosaic of experiences that no other form of travel can parallel.

Here’s why a cruise of the Greek Islands should be your next holiday choice:

  • Diverse Island Cultures in One Trip: Each Greek island has its own unique flavor. From the cosmopolitan vibes of Mykonos to the tranquility of Hydra, a cruise allows you to experience a range of cultures, histories, and landscapes within a short time span. Why limit yourself to one, when you can savor many?
  • Convenience and Comfort: Imagine visiting multiple picturesque islands without the hassle of repacking, catching ferries, or checking in and out of hotels. Your cruise ship is not just your transportation but also your comfortable hotel, floating from one paradise to another.
  • Endless Exploration: With scheduled stops, travelers get ample time to explore each island’s gems at their own pace. Whether you prefer organized excursions or wandering around on your own, you’re guaranteed rich experiences at every port of call.
  • Unparalleled Views: There’s nothing like witnessing the majesty of the Greek Islands from the sea. Whether you’re sipping a cocktail during a golden sunset or waking up to the breathtaking coastline, cruising offers views that land-based holidays simply can’t match.
  • All-Inclusive Luxury: Most cruises offer all-inclusive packages that include meals, accommodation, entertainment, and sometimes even excursions. This not only provides great value for money but also ensures a hassle-free vacation.
  • Meet Like-minded Travelers: A cruise is a melting pot of cultures and personalities. It offers a unique opportunity to forge new friendships, share experiences, and create memories with fellow travelers from around the globe.
  • Tailored Experiences: Today’s cruises cater to a wide array of interests. Whether you’re looking for a romantic getaway, a family vacation, or an adrenaline-fueled adventure, there’s a Greek Islands cruise tailor-made for you.

In essence, choosing a cruise of the Greek Islands is opting for a blend of discovery, relaxation, and luxury. It’s about embracing the magic of the Mediterranean, where every sunrise brings a new island to explore and every sunset seals the memories of a day well spent.

Choosing the Right Cruise for You

The journey on a cruise of the Greek Islands is sure to be mesmerizing, but the experience can vary greatly depending on the type of cruise you opt for.

Your perfect cruise choice depends on your personal preferences, budget, and what you want to get out of your journey. Let’s navigate the waters and help you find the best fit:

Budget Cruises:

  • Pros: These cruises offer an affordable gateway to the Greek Islands. They generally have basic amenities but still provide a comfortable experience.
  • Cons: Limited onboard activities, fewer dining options, and perhaps fewer stops or shorter times at each port.
  • What to Expect: A no-frills journey that covers popular islands and offers basic onboard entertainment.

Luxury Cruises:

  • Pros: Premium services, gourmet dining experiences, spacious cabins, a plethora of onboard activities, and often exclusive or less crowded ports of call.
  • Cons: A heftier price tag. However, the level of luxury and personal attention can make it worth the investment.
  • What to Expect: A lavish experience with meticulous attention to detail, from room service to curated shore excursions.

Adventure/Specialty Cruises:

  • Pros: Tailored experiences such as sailing adventures, diving expeditions, or historical and cultural tours. Ideal for those with specific interests.
  • Cons: Might not cover all the mainstream islands or activities if they focus on niche experiences.
  • What to Expect: A unique, focused journey catering to a particular interest or theme. For instance, a cruise emphasizing Greek mythology might delve deep into the tales of each island, visiting significant historical sites.

Factors to Consider When Choosing Your Cruise:

  • Duration: From short weekend getaways to extended voyages, how long do you wish to sail?
  • Onboard Facilities: Prioritize your needs, be it spas, fitness centers, gourmet dining, or entertainment options.
  • Ports of Call: Which islands are on your must-visit list? Check the itinerary to ensure your desired destinations are covered.
  • Travel Dates: Some islands are best visited during specific times of the year. Also, consider peak tourist seasons if you prefer a quieter experience.
  • Size of the Ship: Larger ships offer more amenities but might not access smaller ports. Smaller ships provide a more intimate experience and can sail to less frequented islands.
  • Reviews and Recommendations: Past travelers’ experiences can offer invaluable insights. Check reviews, ask for recommendations, and maybe even join online cruise forums.

Remember Your Why:

At the heart of it all, why are you taking this cruise? For relaxation? Adventure? Cultural immersion? Ensure your chosen cruise aligns with your primary reason for traveling.

Selecting the right cruise is akin to setting the stage for your Greek Island adventure. By ensuring the backdrop fits your dream, the ensuing journey can unfold like a well-scripted play, with each day being a scene of awe, wonder, and cherished memories.

Whether you’re cruising on a budget, in the lap of luxury, or on a thematic voyage, a cruise of the Greek Islands will always welcome you with their timeless charm. Just make sure your vessel of choice complements the magic!

Mediterranean Small Ship Cruises

Small Ship vs. Large Ship

The Greek Islands, with their charming villages, rich history, and shimmering waters, are a paradise for cruise enthusiasts. As you decide on the type of ship to embark on, you’ll notice the choices range from intimate small vessels to grand floating cities. Each has its distinct charm, advantages, and limitations. Here’s a comprehensive comparison to help you make an informed choice:

Small Ship Cruises

Advantages:.

  • Intimate Experience: Smaller guest numbers allow for a more personalized onboard atmosphere.
  • Access to Secluded Ports: Navigate into smaller harbors, anchor in hidden coves, and visit lesser-known islands that large ships can’t reach.
  • Onboard Community: It’s easier to get to know fellow passengers, fostering a sense of camaraderie.
  • Shorter Embarkation/Disembarkation: With fewer passengers, getting on and off the ship is often more streamlined and quicker.
  • Close to Nature: Many small ships have open decks, allowing passengers to be closer to the sea and landscapes.
  • Local and Authentic Experiences: Excursions from small ships often focus on authentic local experiences, diving deeper into the culture and history of places.

Limitations:

  • Fewer Amenities: Smaller ships may not have multiple dining options, theaters, or expansive fitness centers.
  • Varied Stability: They might be more affected by rough seas, which could be an issue for those prone to seasickness.
  • Lesser Entertainment Options: The onboard entertainment may be limited compared to larger vessels.

cruise port st thomas

Large Ship Cruises

  • Abundance of Amenities: From expansive spas, multiple dining options, theaters, and even climbing walls, there’s always something to do.
  • Stability: Larger ships often provide a smoother ride, especially beneficial in rougher waters.
  • Diverse Entertainment: Nightly shows, themed parties, workshops, and more ensure passengers are never bored.
  • Variety of Accommodations: Guests can choose from a range of cabin types, from inside rooms to expansive suites with private balconies.
  • All-Inclusive Packages: Many large ships offer packages that include drinks, Wi-Fi, and even shore excursions.
  • Crowds: Popular activities, dining venues, or excursions can get crowded.
  • Impersonal Experience: With thousands of passengers, the experience might feel less intimate.
  • Limited Access to Smaller Ports: Due to their size, they often dock at larger ports, requiring additional transport or longer travel times to reach specific destinations.
  • Environmental Impact: Larger ships can have a more significant environmental footprint.

Your ideal Greek Islands cruise largely depends on your travel preferences:

  • If you value intimacy, the chance to explore hidden gems, and a close-knit onboard community, small ship cruising might be your best bet.
  • However, if you’re looking for a plethora of onboard activities, entertainment options, and the grandeur of a floating resort, a large ship cruise could be the right choice.

Remember, the journey is as important as the destination. Whether aboard a quaint sailing yacht or a majestic cruise liner, a cruise of the Greek Islands promise an unforgettable adventure.

Onboard Tips and Tricks

Stepping aboard a cruise ship, especially if it’s your first time, can feel like entering a new world. There’s a rhythm to life on the waves that’s distinct from any other type of travel. To help you sail smoothly and make the most of your journey, here are some onboard tips and tricks that seasoned cruisers swear by:

Familiarize Yourself with the Ship

  • Ship Map: Upon boarding, you’ll typically be given a map of the ship. Spend some time exploring the vessel, noting the locations of main venues, eateries, and emergency stations.
  • Ship’s Daily Newsletter: Most cruises offer a daily newsletter highlighting the day’s events, special offers, and essential information. Make it your morning read!

Optimize Your Cabin Experience

  • Storage Hacks: Space can be at a premium in cruise cabins. Make use of under-bed storage for luggage, and don’t forget about vertical space with hanging organizers.
  • Magnet Power: Most cabin walls are metal. Bring some magnets to hang daily schedules, reservations, or even photos.
  • Keep it Fresh: Pack a small air freshener or dryer sheets to keep your cabin smelling pleasant.

Titanic vs. Modern cruise ships food

Dining Delights

  • Reservations: If your ship has specialty restaurants, consider booking them early, especially for popular dining times.
  • Room Service: Many cruisers don’t realize that room service is often included in their fare. Enjoy breakfast on your balcony or a midnight snack.

Stay Connected, But Wisely

  • Wi-Fi Packages: If you need internet, check for package deals on day one. However, remember that ship Wi-Fi can be slower and pricier than on land.
  • Offline Apps: Download movies, books, or podcasts for entertainment without needing a constant connection.

Maximize Onboard Entertainment

  • Book in Advance: For popular shows or experiences, it’s wise to reserve a spot early.
  • Check Out Lesser-Known Offerings: Aside from the headline acts, there might be smaller workshops, classes, or performances that can enrich your journey.

Stay Fit and Relaxed

  • Gym at Off-Peak: The ship’s fitness center can get crowded, especially in mornings. Consider working out during port days or in the late afternoon.
  • Spa Deals: Spas often run promotions, especially on port days. Keep an eye out for discounted packages or treatments.

Be Money Smart

  • Monitor Your Account: Most cruises operate on a cashless system, with expenses charged to your room. Regularly review your onboard account to avoid any surprises.
  • Tipping: While many cruises include gratuities in the fare, some don’t. Be aware of the ship’s tipping policy and set aside funds accordingly.

Join Onboard Activities

  • Trivia, Games, and Classes: Participate in onboard activities, from dance classes to art auctions. It’s a great way to meet fellow travelers and have fun.
  • Theme Nights: Many cruises have theme nights like “White Night” or “Pirate Night”. Pack accordingly to join the festivities.
  • Attend the Muster Drill: This mandatory safety drill is crucial. Pay attention and know where your muster station is.
  • Balcony Safety: If you have a balcony cabin, never climb or sit on the railing. Always lock balcony doors when not in use, especially if traveling with children.

Make Friends with the Crew

  • Foster Relationships: The ship’s crew can enhance your journey. From insider tips to exceptional service, a friendly chat can go a long way.
  • Feedback Matters: If someone goes above and beyond, note their name to mention in feedback. Positive reviews can benefit crew members in their careers.

Being on a cruise ship is a blend of relaxation and adventure, all set against the backdrop of the vast sea and exciting ports of call. With these onboard tips and tricks, you’re not just setting sail; you’re embarking on a voyage where every day holds the promise of new delights and discoveries.

Greek Island Shore Excursion Tips

Sailing through the Greek Islands is a dreamlike journey, and each port of call holds the promise of new discoveries. Shore excursions are your gateway to these enchanting locales. But how do you make the most of these short visits? Here’s your guide to maximizing and savoring every moment ashore:

Research Before You Dock

  • Local Events: Festivals, local markets, or special events can greatly enhance your visit. Look up the local calendar before you arrive.

Choosing the Right Excursion

  • Activity Level: Always check the activity level of an excursion. Whether you’re up for hiking, snorkeling, or a relaxed city tour, pick something that aligns with your energy and interest.

Time Management

  • Know Your Docking Time: Familiarize yourself with the time the ship docks and the departure time.

Pack a Day Bag

  • Essentials Only: Pack light with just the essentials – a bottle of water, sunscreen, local currency, a map, and any necessary medications.
  • Documentation: Always carry a photo ID, a copy of your passport, and your cruise ship card.

Local Etiquette and Safety

  • Dress Code: Some religious sites may require modest clothing. Always carry a scarf or a shawl, and wear appropriate attire when visiting monasteries or churches.
  • Stay Alert: Just like any tourist spot, be wary of pickpockets. Keep valuables secure and be cautious in crowded areas.

Savor Local Flavors

  • Local Eateries: Bypass the touristy restaurants and seek out local tavernas or street food joints to experience authentic Greek cuisine.
  • Local Produce: From olives to honey and wine, consider buying local produce as souvenirs.

Consider Mobility

  • Rental Options: If you want to explore at your own pace, consider renting a car, scooter, or bicycle. Ensure you have the required licenses and insurance.
  • Public Transport: Some islands have reliable public transport. Familiarize yourself with bus or ferry schedules.

Stay Connected

  • Wi-Fi Spots: Local cafes or restaurants often offer free Wi-Fi. If staying connected is crucial, research Wi-Fi spots beforehand or consider buying a local SIM card.
  • Emergency Contacts: Always have a list of emergency contacts, including the local embassy, if applicable.

Capture Memories, Respectfully

  • Photography: Always ask for permission before photographing locals. Respect off-limit areas in museums or sacred sites.
  • Engage with Locals: Taking a moment to chat, share, or even just smile can turn a sightseeing tour into a memorable cultural exchange.

Environmental Respect

  • Leave No Trace: Keep the pristine beauty of the Greek Islands intact. Don’t litter, and try to reduce plastic waste by carrying a reusable water bottle.
  • Respect Wildlife: If engaging in marine activities, be mindful of the marine life. Avoid touching or disturbing the natural habitat.

Potential Challenges on Greek Islands Cruises

Every adventure comes with its set of challenges, and cruising the Greek Islands is no exception. While the allure of the Aegean’s shimmering waters and the rich tapestry of Greek culture are undeniable, it’s essential to be prepared for any hiccups along the way. Here’s a guide to potential challenges and expert advice to navigate them smoothly:

  • Preventative Measures: Consider over-the-counter motion sickness medications or patches. Consult your doctor before your trip.
  • Cabin Selection: Cabins in the middle of the ship at a lower level tend to feel less movement.
  • Ginger and Green Apples: These natural remedies are known to help alleviate nausea.
  • Off-Peak Visits: Plan your shore excursions early in the morning or later in the afternoon to avoid peak tourist times.
  • Explore Lesser-Known Gems: Instead of the main attractions, delve into hidden spots or less-visited islands for a more authentic experience.
  • Learn Basic Phrases: A few Greek words like “Efharisto” (Thank you) can go a long way.
  • Translation Apps: Modern translation apps can assist in real-time conversations.
  • Sun Protection: Always wear sunscreen, a hat, and sunglasses. Reapply sunscreen regularly.
  • Stay Hydrated: Carry a water bottle and drink frequently, especially if indulging in local wines or spirits.
  • Research in Advance: Familiarize yourself with local transportation options and schedules.
  • Rent Wisely: If renting a car or scooter, ensure you’re comfortable with local driving habits and have the necessary licenses.
  • Stay Flexible: Weather or other unforeseen circumstances might lead to changes. Embrace the new plan, and explore alternative activities.
  • Travel Insurance: Consider purchasing travel insurance that covers cancellations or changes.
  • Respect Local Customs: Dress modestly at religious sites and be aware of local customs or traditions.
  • Stay Informed: Research or ask onboard staff about any cultural norms for each island.
  • Wi-Fi Access: While the ship might offer Wi-Fi, it could be slower or pricier. Some ports might have cafes with free Wi-Fi.
  • Offline Mode: Download maps, guides, or translation apps for offline use.
  • Local Currency: While many places accept credit cards, it’s always good to have some Euros on hand, especially for small purchases.
  • Notify Your Bank: Inform your bank about your travel plans to avoid any card blockages due to suspicious international activity.
  • Overpacking:
  • Pack Smart: Focus on versatile clothing items that can be mixed and matched. Remember, cruise cabins can be compact.
  • Laundry Services: Many cruise ships offer laundry services, allowing you to pack lighter and freshen up your clothes during the trip.

Every journey comes with its own set of challenges, but they’re often the stories we remember and laugh about later. Embracing these challenges and being prepared can enrich your experience. With these tips in hand, you’re not just prepared for your Greek Islands cruise; you’re ready to make it an adventure of a lifetime!

Book. The Island , Victoria Hislop (2013). This novel plunges the reader into a tangled web of taboos and family secrets. It follows a young English woman, Alexis, who decides to spend a summer in Plaka, Crete, where her mother was born and lived until she was 18 years old. This homecoming soon unravels into a mystery as she begins to ask some big questions: Why did her mother run away from her past? What secrets lie on the island of Spinalonga, which was a leper colony for the first half of the 20th century?

Music. Nisiotika (which means island in Greek) is the traditional music of the Greek Islands. In the Cyclades, this style is closely tied to the Cretan tradition, combining poetic couplets with lyra or violin melodies for a more western sound. On the other islands, local dances, with Turkish or Italian influences, accompany mandolin or guitar music. Some of this genre's most famous performers include Mariza Koch and Mythos.

It follows Basil, an uptight young British writer, who returns to the island of his ancestors to settle his inheritance, and Zorba, the exuberant Greek who becomes his guide. Despite their differences, the two are able to form a close bond.

Greek Island Cruise: The Best Way To Explore Greece?

D o you hate packing and unpacking? I do too. I just got back from a 5-week trip around Greece. During the first part of my trip, I had to switch hotels every couple of nights. Ugh! So it was a relief to finally board the Celestyal Crystal and stay put for my eight-day Greek Island Cruise ! I can’t wait to share with you why I think this is the best Greek Island Cruise to go Greek Island Hopping !

8-Day Greek Island Cruise “Idyllic Aegean”

There are a few reasons why I picked this cruise line and itinerary for my first Greek Island Cruise:

  • The islands on the Idyllic Aegean were on my bucket list (Thessaloniki, Kusadasi/Ephesus, Crete, Santorini, Mykonos, and Milos).
  • Celestyal Cruise Line stays longer at each destination, so you can experience the islands after the crowds leave. This made a BIG difference!!!
  • They offer small group “ authentic excursions ” at many destinations, which is great if you want to have a more custom experience in Greece.
  • With 1200 passengers, the Celestyal Crystal is a relatively small ship, which I prefer.
  • I did the 3-Continent cruise with Celestyal in 2019 and loved it!!!

Greek Island Cruise Itinerary

As I was traveling with my 13-year-old niece, I found the Celestyal Idyllic Aegean cruise itinerary and tours offered a good mix of historical places, great food, beautiful islands, and stunning beaches that made this trip interesting for both of us. Here were some of the highlights at each of the Greek islands we visited.

Day 1: Piraeus/Athens

As we arrived the night before our cruise departed, we didn’t have time to explore Athens or Piraeus before we boarded the ship. I had been to Athens before, but it was my niece’s first time in the city, so we added a few days to explore Athens after the cruise.

We arrived on the ship pretty early, around 11 AM. There was almost no line to check in and we were on board the ship at around 11:15. After checking out our Junior Suite , we explored the ship and had a quick lunch at the buffet. By the time we returned, our bags were waiting for us in the room and we unpacked and got settled in before heading to dinner and watching the evening show “Mama Mia”.

I highly recommend getting to the ship early. Last time we did a cruise out of Piraeus, we checked in after lunch, and not only was the check-in process much longer due to long lines, but the whole day felt more rushed.

Starting in September, you might be lucky to sail on the newest ship of the Celestyal fleet, the Celestyal Journey . This 1260 cabin ship features 149 suites, two pools, seven restaurants, and eight lounges and bars. Can’t wait to sail on it, too!

Day 2: Thessaloniki

On our first stop, we explored the second-largest city of Greece, Thessaloniki, on a food tour. This was an “authentic experiences” tour, and it was fantastic. We were a small group of 6 hungry travelers, ready to eat our way through the city.

Our local guide was fantastic and shared some interesting stories about Thessaloniki while taking us to some of the city’s best restaurants, bakeries, and cafés. We tried things like traditional Greek coffee, bougatsa (phyllo dough pockets stuffed with either sweet cream or cheese), and a traditional meze spread at an ouzeria with all kinds of treats, such as grilled octopus, mussels, fava beans, fried zucchini flowers stuffed with goat cheese, and many more local delicacies.

After our delicious food tour, my niece and I strolled through the city and did some shopping before returning to the ship.

Day 3: Kusadasi/Ephesus

This was my second time in Kusadasi, but the first time for my niece, so we definitely wanted to see Ephesus. The crowds at the end of May/beginning of June were definitely more than the last time I visited in December, but I= think that the UNESCO Heritage site of Ephesus is a must – at least once.

My favorite place in Ephesus is the area of the Terrace houses, which are over 2000 years old. You have to pay an extra entrance fee, but it is worth it to see the stunning mosaics and wall paintings that are incredibly well-preserved.

Afterward, we visited a carpet factory. To be honest, this was not my cup of tea as the experience was very sales-y and I would have preferred some more free time in Kusadasi to explore.

Pro Tip: If you plan on buying sweets and souvenirs, don’t buy it in the shops in town. For many things, the prices inside the cruise ship terminal are much better ($8 vs $22 for a box of Turkish delight).

Day 4: Heraklion, Crete

Crete is the largest Island in Greece, and one of the biggest sights on the island is the Palace of Knossos . Knossos is often referred to as the first city of Europe, dating back to the Neolithic area around 7000 BC.

After spending our previous day in Ephesus, I thought it would be a good idea to skip another day of ruins and go on a scenic drive around the Cretian countryside to a picturesque mountain village instead.

Big mistake! Our tour was quite touristy and not as idyllic as I had hoped. Three big busses of tourists approximately doubled that small village’s population, making it a lot less “quaint.” We overheard several cruise ship guests who had gone to Knossos’s archeological site and LOVED it. I recommend choosing one of the Palace of Knossos excursions for this cruise stop.

Day 5: Santorini

Santorini is by far the most popular Greek island, and we were visiting at the beginning of the high season, so I was expecting big crowds instead of serene Instagram-able scenery. Don’t get me wrong, it was busy, but as all the other cruise ships were leaving, the island transformed and turned into the magical place that drew those crowds in the first place.

We started our day with a winetasting tour and visited two small villages. Our group was about 20 people, and we had a very nice experience without the crowds and saw some beautiful places in Santorini. We visited two wineries: Anhydrous Winery is within walking distance or a short taxi ride from the town of Fira and has excellent wines. But don’t miss Venetsanos Winery ! This winery has stunning views overlooking the whole caldera. What a spot to enjoy a glass of wine, no?

After our tour, we were dropped off near the cable car. As there were five cruise ships in Santorini, the wait time in the afternoon was approximately 1-1.5 hours. I felt bad for the other cruise ship travelers, as their visit to Santorini was cut even shorter by having to stand in line to make it back in time to the last tender.

Celestyal doesn’t leave Santorini until past midnight, so got to enjoy the island when it was a lot less crowded. We strolled up the coastal path to Imerovigli, a small village north of Fira to enjoy the views and then had dinner trying some of the delicious Santorini dishes , overlooking the sunset over the caldera. Definitely worth the splurge for this stunning view.

Our waitress said it was only about 10 more minutes by foot down the switchbacks from the restaurant to the tender boat harbor. That was a lie, ha! I attribute our 30+ minute descent to the fact that I was wearing flimsy sandals (the stones are very slippery!) and that we had to dodge the donkey droppings in the dark with flashlights.

Pro Tip: If you plan on walking up or down to the harbor, wear proper footwear and give yourself a little extra time before the last tender leaves.

Day 6: Mykonos

Since my niece and I enjoyed our food tour in Thessaloniki so much, my niece and I decided to do another one in Mykonos . This time, our group was a little bigger (17 people) but we had the chance to try some delicious food on this tour as well, while also getting to know the port city of Chora.

Mykonos is known as one of the high-society party islands of the Mediterranean and we got to enjoy a little glimpse of it as our ship was again the last one to leave the port well past midnight. Most cruise ships left the island between 3-5 PM. After they left, Mykonos transformed similarly to Santorini and felt like a completely different island.

Day 7: Milos

I was really looking forward to Milos. My niece and I signed up to go kayaking, and I could not wait to see the bright turquoise water with white limestone cliffs. Unfortunately, the weather did not cooperate. We were still able to kayak and had a fantastic time, but the grey sky turned the water into a similarly bleak color.

However, my niece and I still had a blast. Our guide showed us stunning beaches, hidden caves, and hot springs and even shared homemade snacks with us. It was my niece’s first time kayaking, and she did really well. I was super proud of her for trying something outside her comfort zone, and when we returned to the ship, she couldn’t stop smiling the rest of the day. What a great way to finish our Greek island cruise!

Day 8: Piraeus/Athens

Time flies when you are having fun, and before we knew it, we were already back in Piraeus, and it was time to disembark.

Greek Island Cruise with Celestyal Review

I am so glad I picked Celestyal for my first Greek isles cruise. The small ship, small group tours, and long time in port really made this cruise a perfect fit for me, as I am not a big fan of crowds and like to explore each destination a little deeper. Of course, each island deserves more than just a one-day stop, but I felt I got a good first glimpse of each cruise stop.

If you have limited time and want to see as much as possible and as many places as possible during your trip to Greece, then a Greek island cruise is the most convenient and cost-effective way. Seven different destinations in 8 days would not be possible in any other way.

Of course, a smaller ship like the Celestyal Crystal has not have quite as many amenities as some of those big cruise ships, but it still has everything you expect to find on a cruise ship, including spa, pool, jacuzzi, casino, evening performances and several restaurants. And since there is no sea day and the time in port is so long, I wouldn’t have had much time to take advantage of those amenities anyway.

On the other hand, a smaller ship and longer time in port also means that it is less invasive and disruptive for the locals. Yes, they depend on tourism, but when the roads are so busy that even emergency vehicles can’t get through, you can see the dark side of mass tourism. As we had more time in port, we also had more time to shop, eat, and drink at each destination, supporting the local economy. Celestyal Cruise Line is a Greek company with headquarters in Piraeus, so even the money for the cruise tickets goes back into the Greek economy.

If you are looking for a small ship Greek island cruise that lets you maximize your time at each cruise stop and want to avoid the big crowds, then Celestyal is for you. I highly recommend them and can’t wait to cruise with them again!

Greece's Largest Island Is Packed With Ancient History, Gorgeous Resorts, and a Stunning Pink-sand Beach

Get ready for plenty of fun in the Grecian sun.

Best Hotels and Resorts

Cities to visit, best things to do, best beaches, best time to visit, how to get there, how to get around.

Gautier Houba/Travel + Leisure

Crete, Greece's largest island, clocks in at more than 3,000 square miles and offers plenty of ancient history, incredible food, and natural beauty to explore. But you don't have to take my word for just how special Crete is.

"I often describe Crete as a compact, island version of California. We have surfing and backcountry skiing in winter. In summer, we have canyon hiking, mountaineering, and, my personal favorite, hidden beaches only accessible by boat. And the shoulder seasons are — chef's kiss — perfection," Anastasia Sotiropulos, a tour guide based in Chania, Crete, shared. "The real treasure of Crete, though, are the people. The farmers, cheesemakers, fishmongers, artists, restaurateurs, winemakers, musicians, and homemakers create unique experiences for those lucky enough to visit this incredible island."

Top 5 Can’t Miss

  • Stay at a hotel with stunning Mediterranean views, like Elounda Bay Palace or Domes of Elounda.
  • Explore the ancient Palace of Knossos.
  • Catch some sun on Elafonissi Beach, one of the world’s most beautiful pink-sand beaches.
  • Wander the streets of Chania’s Old Town to admire Venetian, Turkish, and Greek architecture.
  • Visit during the shoulder season to avoid the hottest temperatures and largest crowds.

Ready to start exploring for yourself? Here's everything you need to know to plan a trip to Crete.

Elounda Bay Palace

This luxury hotel has long been beloved for its mix of elegance and charm. The rooms and suites here open up to sweeping views of the azure Mediterranean waters, and the hotel's private beaches ensure you can always find a chair (and an umbrella). Make an appointment at the Chenot Spa, which offers massages, facials, and body treatments using science-forward ingredients and techniques.

Domes of Elounda, Autograph Collection

Looking to stretch out? Domes of Elounda is the place to be. Known for its breathtaking views of the Mediterranean and the historic island of Spinalonga, the resort is home to just suites and villas, which open to fantastic patios with private plunge pools. Yes, this hotel comes with its own spa, but guests can also indulge in an in-room treatment to truly never lift a finger.

Courtesy of Blue Palace, a Luxury Collection Resort & Spa

Blue Palace

Blue Palace was named a Travel + Leisure reader favorite in the 2023 World's Best Awards , and in 2024, it's getting a whole new look. The renowned hotel is reopening as a modernist boutique hotel with just 47 bungalows and suites, all with brand-new interiors and some with private plunge pools. But even if you don't book a room with a pool, that's okay, as the hotel sits just steps from the beach anyway.

Casa Delfino Hotel & Spa

Find yourself in a 17th-century Venetian mansion-turned-boutique hotel at Casa Delfino . The hotel, located in the heart of Chania's Old Town, allows travelers to stay amid the action while also offering a retreat-worthy rooftop garden that comes with sweeping views of the sea. It's a perfect place for families thanks to its one and two-bedroom suites.

A visit to Chania's Old Town is a must, thanks to its charming Venetian, Turkish, and Greek architecture. To make the most of your time in Old Town, book a tour with a guide who can show you all the best sights and all the prime spots to get a great meal.

Get in a little more Venetian architecture at Rethymno Old Town , one of the best-preserved historical districts in Crete. The city is built around the Venetian fortress, which provides fantastic panoramic views from its hilltop location. Don't skip the artisan shops where you can find the perfect souvenir.

No visit to Crete is complete without a visit to its capital, Heraklion . Here, visitors can check out numerous historic sites, the Archaeological Museum mentioned below, and all the city's bustling markets, cafes, and bars. And as a bonus, the Palace of Knossos is just a short drive away.

Explore the Palace of Knossos.

Dive into more than 4,000 years of Greek history at the Palace of Knossos , Crete's most iconic archaeological site. The ancient complex is absolutely massive, and it comes with a gorgeous view of the sea thanks to its position high on the hill. "Crete's most famous archaeological site is the great Minoan Palace of Knossos, the oldest, largest, and most elaborate of these sites," Peter Sommer of Peter Sommer Travels , shared. "In its wide courts, shaded colonnades, and intricate arrangements of room after room, floor after floor, one can really come to grips with a civilization from far back in the Bronze Age, and grapple with questions that are still hotly debated – what did these palaces look like, what were they for, who lived in them, and how did they function?"

Hike the Samaria Gorge.

Outdoor lovers will adore spending a day hiking through the Samaria Gorge, a lengthy hike through Crete's White Mountains. The hike stretches on for nearly 10 miles through ancient cypress and pine forests and the abandoned village of Samaria before ending at the sea. However, the most famous part of the hike has to be the "Gates," where the gorge is just 13 feet apart but is more than 1,500 feet high. Make sure to give yourself plenty of time if you plan to hike the entire trail. The park's official site estimates that it takes about five hours to complete the journey.

Visit the Old Venetian Harbor of Chania.

Take a stroll through the Old Venetian Harbor of Chania and take in all the colors of Greece. Travelers can walk past homes and buildings showcasing Crete's unique melding of history, including all its Venetian, Ottoman, and Greek influences. Shop in its boutiques, grab a frappe in a cafe, view the massive fortress, and dine on plenty of fresh ingredients (hello, Greek salads) at its waterfront restaurants. Just make sure to have your camera ready, as its colorful buildings make for the perfect Instagram backdrop.

Learn something new at the Heraklion Archaeological Museum.

Get an even deeper education on the island's history with a visit to the Heraklion Archaeological Museum , which houses the world's most comprehensive collection of artifacts from the Minoan civilization. Its most famous exhibit is the Phaistos Disc, a clay disc sporting more than 240 symbols that is said to be more than 3,000 years old. As the museum notes, "experts have not yet a definitive conclusion of the contents of the inscription," so maybe you can uncover what it all means during your visit.

Elafonissi Beach

Get ready to step foot on one of the world's most beautiful and romantic beaches, Elafonissi Beach . The stretch of shoreline is well-known for its pink sand — created by millions of crushed seashells —that disappears into shallow, turquoise waters. The beach, which is part of a nature reserve, is an ideal spot for families with small children thanks to the calm waters, but there are also plenty of spots for adults to put down their towels and umbrellas for a quiet day at the beach.

Balos Lagoon

One more brilliant beach to visit is Balos Lagoon , a beach made up of brilliant white sand that's lapped by unbelievably blue water. "One of the most popular must-see places in the Chania region is the Balos Lagoon with hypnotizing turquoise waters and a panoramic landscape," Alonso Marly, a travel expert at Skylux Travel , said. "I suggest visiting the beach early in the morning to experience the lagoon at its most tranquil and skip the tourist crowds."

Find a different style of landscape at Vai Beach , famous for the palm forest lining the coast. Once again, it's a spot where travelers can find warm, sandy beaches and beautiful blue waters, just this time with the bonus of tree shade for the perfect beach snooze.

The best time to visit Crete is from June to August when the weather on the island is at its prime. As WeatherSpark notes, the warmest weather can be found between early June and late September, when the average daily high temperature hits above 79 degrees Fahrenheit. Things get particularly hot in July, when the average temperature hits 84 degrees.

"When it comes to the best times to visit Crete, keep in mind that the island is seasonal, and during winter months, most of its attractions are closed," Marly added. "However, throughout the high season, it is full of life day and night."

But, if you're looking to escape the crowds, try plotting a visit during the island's shoulder seasons, which fall over April to May and September to early October.

"If possible, I recommend visiting the island during the shoulder season when it's not too hot and crowded – from April to June or September through October — to make the most of your authentic Greek holiday, full of sunshine and unforgettable experiences," Marly said.

Crete is accessible via its international airports in Heraklion (Heraklion International Airport, HER) and Chania (Chania International Airport, CHQ). Heraklion is the island's busiest airport, and it is also the second-largest airport in Greece, just behind Athens. Several major airlines fly into the airport, including Emirates, Aegean, RyanAir, EasyJet, and KLM.

For those looking to avoid the airport, there is a ferry option, but be warned: It's a long ride. Travelers can hop aboard a ferry from Piraeus Port in Athens to Heraklion or Chania, but the ride can take between nine and 10 hours.

The best and easiest way to get around Crete is with your own car. Remember, this is Greece's largest island, so if you want to explore more widely, you will need some wheels. There are a ton of rental car companies on the island, including big names like Avis, Budget, and Hertz, all ready to loan you a ride.

Public Transit

Crete also has a robust public bus system that can get you to most points of interest. Just note the buses here tend to move more slowly than cars, but it's also a rather affordable option, with rides starting at just a few euros.

Scooters are also a rather popular mode of transportation here, as they are in almost all of the Greek islands. Visitors do need a valid license to rent scooters and must wear a helmet while riding.

Inside the bougie cruise ship where guests are served 24-hour champagne and caviar

It’s all about the luxe life (Picture: Silverseas)

If you’ve been addicted to TikTok’s nine month cruise , and scrolled through pictures of the world’s largest cruise ship , you’re going to want to know about this oh-so- bougie offering, where guests are treated to the ultimate spa experience at sea.

First launched on the luxury liner, Silver Dawn, by Silversea Cruises, the ‘spa concept’ is said to be inspired by the lavish lifestyle of the Roman elite .

And while you’re not about to enter into a world of gladiators, feasts and orgies, it is all rather indulgent.

In fact, the concept was originally inspired by the pandemic: a chance for instant, decadent gratification, after literal years of being locked away inside.

The Otium Spa (Latin for ‘free time’), offers 100 minute-long signature treatments. Yep, 100 whole minutes where you’re kneaded and prodded into the land of ultimate relaxation.

Their treatment menu includes The Otium, a massage involving a mix of oils infused with shea butter, raspberry and chamomile. The Appollonian Spirit will ease tired muscles, and the Divine Experience includes a scalp, neck, shoulder and hand massage.

Fancy a dip? (Picture: Silverseas)

You’ll need deep pockets though, as each of these treatments cost a whopping $399. You can also get a little tweakment on board too, with wrinkle and dermal filler treatments meaning you could return to land looking 10 years younger.

And, as you hop from thermal spa to steam room to aromatherapy bath, you can enjoy champagne and caviar, 24 hours a day. It’d be rude not to.

There’s also cocktails, macarons, and chocolates on offer, and you’ll find fresh fruit and infused waters if you want to err on the side of healthy. The soothing music played throughout is also inspired by ancient Rome.

Say bon voyage to the more traditional categories of 'best large ship' or 'best luxury cruise line' and instead ahoy to innovation, food and drink and showstopping performances.

Vote for your favourite here .

But don’t think the Roman-esque vibes stop once you leave the spa.

Back in your cabin, there’s the Otium balcony experience. On chilly days, guests can order cashmere blankets and hot chocolate from their personal butler to be enjoyed on their veranda.

Roman inspired music is piped throughout (Picture: Silverseas)

There’s also the ‘food and chill’ experience, where your brings comfort food to your door. But this isn’t Doritos, dip and a dairy milk. The comfort food menu includes foie gras burgers and lobster on brioche.

And, when it’s time for bed, you can choose a pillow from a vast menu, curl up on 400 thread-count Egyptian cotton linens, and if you want to go all out, you can ask your butler to fill them room with their signature ‘sleeping scent’. We’re feeling dozy already.

Prices on Silver Nova start at £2,950 (Picture: Silverseas)

The Otium spa is available on three Silversea ships: Silver Dawn and Silver Nova. And of course, a luxury experience comes with a price tag.

The cheapest available voyage on the Silver Nova goes from Seward (Alaska) to Canada, for seven days and costs £2,950 per person (excluding off shore experiences).

On Silver Nova, the cheapest cruise goes from Stockholm to Copenhagen (or you can do the same trip in reverse) for £5,750 per person for seven days, taking in sites in Poland, Lithuania, Latvia, Estonia and Finland along the way.

Ten of the best small-ship cruises

Not a fan of mega-ships our cruise expert has picked the best boutique sailings to keep things exclusive and adventurous.

Nassau, Bahamas

T here’s something special about small-ship cruising. You’ll feel a deeper connection to the sea, and there’s a certain pleasure from being docked in chic little ports among the superyachts or anchored in a remote bay far from the crowds. Of course, there won’t be Broadway shows and a choice of restaurants, but simplicity is all part of the appeal. Here are ten of the best small-ship cruises for this year and next.

This article contains affiliate links, which can earn us revenue

1. Authentic Caribbean

Le Ponant sailing yacht

Explore some of the tiniest islands in the Caribbean on Ponant’s smallest ship: the swish, recently refurbished sailing yacht Le Ponant, which carries just 32 passengers. Sail from Marigot on St Martin to Prickly Pear Cays on Anguilla, St Barts, Nevis, Falmouth Bay on Antigua, Barbuda and the chic Îles des Saintes in Guadeloupe — in other words some of the most seductive islands in the region. On board you can expect the fine dining and service that comes from the ship’s partnership with Relais & Châteaux. Details Seven nights’ all-inclusive from £5,550pp, including excursions, departing on March 8, 2025 (uk.ponant.com). Fly to St Maarten and back from Guadeloupe

2. Croatia under sail

Kairos

Explore Croatia in detail on the classic schooner Kairos, which sails out of medieval Trogir to Vis, Hvar and Korcula, as well as lesser-known islands and anchorages, depending on wind speed and direction. With just 16 passengers and seven crew on board, this is small-ship luxury at its best — and you don’t have to help to sail the boat unless you want to do so. When you’re at anchor, jump straight into the warm Adriatic. Evenings are spent either in lively towns or anchored in remote bays. Details Seven nights’ full board from £3,025pp, departing on August 10 (venturesailholidays.com). Fly to Split

3. Butlers in the Bahamas

The Bahamas

This 12-night cruise zigzags from New York to Bermuda for an overnight stay, through the Bahamian islands of San Salvador, Exuma and Honeymoon Harbour on tiny Gun Cay, then on to Miami before ending back in Nassau. Expect luxury all the way, with a butler service, an open bar and helicopter trips, plus a submarine and water toys to play on when the ship’s marina platform is down, which is often. Scenic Eclipse carries just 228 passengers, with the vibe of a swish private yacht in its glossy lounges and smart, high-ceilinged cabins. Details Twelve nights’ all-inclusive from £6,914pp, including flights, private transfers, tips, wi-fi and excursions, departing on October 12 (scenic.co.uk)

6. Amazon adventure

A jaguar in the Amazon rainforest

Trace the northeast coastline of South America on a 19-night expedition on Swan Hellenic’s smart SH Vega, which carries 158 passengers. You’ll start in Barbados and head to Trinidad, but this is no ordinary Caribbean cruise — the next stop is Georgetown in Guyana, then it’s the volcanic Salvation Islands, a former penal colony off the coast of French Guiana now returned to nature. From the Brazilian town of Iquiqui you’ll head into the Amazon rainforest in search of jaguars and pink river dolphins. While in Brazil there’s also a chance to see the rippling white sand dunes ofLençois Maranhenses National Park and the Unesco world heritage town of Olinda before arriving in colourful Bahia. 7. Maritime history on east-coast US

Sag Harbor

Sail from Boston to New York City on American Cruise Lines’ 90-passenger American Independence, built for the shallow inlets and rivers of the US east coast. You’ll learn about the history of Boston and call at arty, boho coastal towns packed with maritime history. Plymouth was the first pilgrim settlement, while yachtie Newport is known for its opulent seaside estates and lobster. Old Saybrook, settled in 1635, is one of oldest towns in Connecticut, while Sag Harbor is famed for its art galleries and endless beaches. 8. Tall ship Atlantic crossing

Star Flyer

Crossing the Atlantic under sail is special; you’ll have days to commune with the ocean, leaving the stresses of everyday life behind. Join the 170-passenger tall ship Star Flyer in Las Palmas, Gran Canaria — the city from which Columbus set sail in 1492. There’s a stop at the Canary island of La Gomera, then 13 days at sea as you head west to the Tropics, making landfall at St Maarten. On board you can help the crew with the sails, splash around in the pool, have a Thai massage and — on this sailing, which has a yoga theme — practise your sun salutations. Details Fifteen nights’ full board from £2,015pp, departing on November 15 (starclippers.co.uk). Fly to Gran Canaria and back from St Maarten

9. Tempting Tahiti

One night there’s a special dinner on a private island, followed by a fire-dancing display under the stars. Details Seven nights’ all-inclusive from £6,200pp, including flights and a night in a hotel pre-cruise, departing on October 17 (windstarcruises.com; book by June 30)

A wellness coach travels on every cruise to help balance mind and body, with yoga, meditation and hiking on offer. On a seven-night Divine Cyclades cruise you’ll sail from Athens and visit islands including Delos, Naxos, Milos, Serifos and Kythnos, as well as big-hitters such as Santorini and Ios. Romance and culture await on a Greek Island cruise

It’s no wonder the Greek Islands have always been a perennial favorite of travelers. Greece is a magical, romantic destination where you can wander alongside stunning coastlines, explore the ruins of ancient cultures, and dine on fresh Mediterranean cuisine all in one vacation.

On one of our luxury Greek Island cruises, explore far-flung beaches, drift out to sea on catamarans and kayaks, and duck into tiny tavernas where you can eat and drink like a local. From the sun-soaked stone buildings in Santorini to the white-sand beaches that beckon in Mykonos, a Greece cruise is the best way to experience the captivating Greek Islands.

Greek Island Cruise Highlights

Once-in-a-lifetime experiences.

There is no shortage of unforgettable experiences to be had in Greece. Its seascapes and cityscapes are wondrous, from the mighty ruins of the Acropolis to the buzzing, modern city center of Athens. Visit an olive farm in Crete, or embark on a tour of Mykonos Town’s organic wineries. Or, take an intimate, exclusive cooking lesson on how to make local favorites in Santorini’s main square, right in the middle of it all.

Ancient History

Greece is a world-renowned destination for history buffs. Stroll through the Acropolis and marvel at human achievement, or visit the Museum of Cycladic Art to study Aegean and Cypriot artifacts. Examine the 400-year-old remains of a town buried under volcanic ash outside of Santorini. Explore the historic forts of Corfu, or hop on a boat ride to Delos, said to be the birthplace of Apollo.

Natural Wonders

Discover Elafonisi Beach, a paradise of pink, powdery sand and shallow waters off the island of Crete. Take an unforgettable cruise through the impressive Corinth Canal on a shore excursion in Athens. Stand in awe at the base of Mount Olympus, Greece’s highest mountain and the fabled home of the Greek gods. In Zakynthos, don’t miss a visit to the awe-inspiring Shipwreck Beach, which often tops best-of lists.

Featured Ports

Santorini, Greece

Travelers flock to Santorini for its cobalt-roofed homes, friendly locals, and fine local wine. On this crescent-shaped island, soak up the sun at black-sand beaches like Perissa, or spend a day at the Santorini Caldera, one of the only places in the world to see submerged remnants of an erupted volcano. Sample Greek wines at family-owned wineries dotting the Aegean coast, and take the time to marvel at the incredible panoramas all around you.

Mykonos, Greece

Mykonos is the quintessential Mediterranean beach destination. Choose your favorite to spend the day on, or book a sailing excursion to go beach hopping. Take a day trip beyond Mykonos to the nearby island of Delos, an uninhabited archeological site said to be the birthplace of Greek gods. Experience an authentic side of the island with a home-cooking class, where you’ll sample and prepare delicious local specialties.

Athens, Greece

To visit the capital of Greece is to take a trip back in time, whether you’re exploring the narrow streets of the Plaka District or hiking the Acropolis for well-earned views of the Parthenon. After a day of exploration, pop into a taverna for Mediterranean meze and a cold beer.
