day trip to koh tao from koh samui

Jessie was amazing ! Everything from her level of English to her understanding of what we valued .

We had a good time exploring the city with Selinda!

Our guide lele is a wealth of information, Lele is very professional and very attentive to our needs. Lele is amazing. Lele got everything spot on. It probably helps that Guilin is a brilliant place to visit so Lele has great material to work with but that doesn't take anything away from how much Lele helped make it a great trip.

Our guide for Beijing was super knowledgeable and experienced and able to help us to achieve as much as we wanted within the time given. We had a fun time guided by him as he is also super humorous and you can see how he interacts with the vendors and people whom he comes by. Thank you for a very enjoyable time in Beijing and accommodating to all our needs!

Our China Highlight guide. Michael, was attentive, thoughtful and knowledgeable. He narrated many interesting historical events about Chengdu while touring around the city and having afternoon tea with us. He was thoughtful to provide us with snacks during long hikes at Leshan or walks around the city.

She was very flexible and added extra time when we needed it and we felt extremely well taken care of. She also chose the best restaurants for us,

Our tour guide Helen, was excellent, she was very kind, professional and passionate for her work and she also loves Pandas! She will take you to take the best panda photos and to know more about Chengdu city. Our tour was great, she took us to all our destinations always with the best spots: Temples, pagodas, famous streets, theaters, pandas...you name it! Everything was great.

He picked up our pre-booked boat/other excursions tickets so we were able to avoid all the long lines and chaos. He is knowledgeable of the places we visited, courteous, fun to travel with and well-versed in Chinese classics.

Tom is the guide that will take you to where no other guide will. We pushed for the experience and Tom and the team delivered more than what we could have ever asked for. His English speaking ability and his Chinese history knowledge is second to none.

How to go from Koh Samui to Koh Tao

day trip to koh tao from koh samui

Turtle island, named after the sea turtles that swim through the crystal-clear Thai Gulf all around it, Koh Tao is a laid-back alternative to chic Samui and hedonistic Phangan. It’s sat some 41 miles to the north of its Chumphon Archipelago compadres, mimicking a desert island with its coconut-strewn beachfronts and hidden coves, not to mention some of the best diving this side of the country. Boats are the obvious choice for getting between Koh Samui and Koh Tao, with a few options varying in travel time, cost, and company on the menu.

Koh Samui to Koh Tao by catamaran

Koh Samui to Koh Tao by catamaran

Time – 1.5 hours (boat crossing only) Price – $18 Comfort – 5/5

The Lomprayah ferry from Koh Samui

Swap Samui’s spas and sprawling hotels for the rustic vibes and bamboo beach bars of Koh Tao in under two hours – that’s what’s possible with the super-fast ferry service. It’s operated by the Lomprayah ferry company, which is one of the top-rated ferry companies in the whole region. They offer the most modern boats, efficient ticketing (book ferry tickets online via 12Go.asia ), and packages that include a transfer from the lobby of your hotel to the boat.

The fastest and most modern boats are the high speed ferries offered by the Lomprayah ferry company.

Lomprayah ferry schedule, departure point Nathon Pier

Because these are usually the most popular choice among backpackers and island hoppers crossing the Thai Gulf, there are a number of services daily. High-season months see Lomprayah’s boats leaving at 8am from the Pralan Pier near the hotel strips of Maenam, with extra departures at 12.30pm. You can also catch the Lomprayah ferries at the departure time 11.15am and 5.30pm (the last service of the day) from the Nathon Pier on the far western coast of Koh Samui.

Lomprayah Catamaran seating options

The boats themselves are among the best in the whole fleet going between Koh Samui and Koh Tao. They have indoor seating that benefits from air conditioning, an onboard shop for refreshments and drinks, and two large deck areas where you can watch other tropical islands shoot by as you sail. Available at a first come first serve basis, for 100 THB extra you can get access to the VIP area upstairs with more luxury seats and for 200 THB you can access the exclusive lounge where you can make the trip sitting in leather seats.

Ferry Port: Mae Haad Pier , Koh Tao Island

Like most ferry services, the Lomprayah option reach Koh Tao at the ferry port Mae Haad pier. From there, it should be a cinch to find a taxi to your destination on the island, or just choose a travel option that includes transfers.

Koh Samui to Koh Tao by high-speed ferry

Koh Samui to Koh Tao by high-speed ferry

Time – 2 to 2.5 hours Price – $18 Comfort – 4/5

Koh Samui to Koh Tao can be done in a single morning if you opt for the high-speed ferry. Despite the name, however, these rides aren’t quite as fast as their Catamaran counterparts. Still, they will whisk you off one island and drop you on another in the time it takes to finish a mango sticky rice and enjoy the view of the Thai Gulf rolling by off starboard side.

Relaxing ferries from Koh Samui to Koh Tao

Slowing the journey just a tad is also a good option for passengers not too used to sea travel. These larger, slightly more tardy boats don’t tend to sway and lurch as much as the Catamarans when in the water. They’re better for fending off sea sickness. And they’re a dash more relaxing – great news when it’s the beaches of Koh Phangan and the jungle-clad peaks of the Mu Koh Angthong National Marine Park drifting by on the horizon.

High-speed ferries cost only a smidgen less than the Catamaran but make for a more relaxing ride.

Choice of Ferry operators to Koh Tao

Two main companies run connections on the high-speed ferry route. First, there’s Seatran Discovery. They have the most modern vessels, with padded inside seating and big decks. They also tend to be the pricier option, but that’s down to slightly shorter travel times, along with a sought-after departure point at Bangrak Pier on the north corner of Samui. Secondly, you’ve got Songserm. They go from Nathon Pier in the west and take just a little longer to pull up at Mae Haad Pier in Koh Tao.

Booking online

In total, there are about three services on the high-speed ferry between the two gulf islands each day. They book up fast in the high-season months between November and March, so it’s always wise to book your tickets online using 12Go long before you jet off for the coral reefs and dive sites.

Koh Tao from Koh Samui via Koh Phangan

Thailand’s palm-fringed isles captured your imagination? Eager to explore all the paradisiacal corners the gulf has to offer? Why not put together your very own island-hopping itinerary. It’s possible because loads of normal ferries link Koh Samui island with Koh Phangan , with onward connections from there to the scuba diving mecca of Koh Tao.

Stop on nearby island Koh Phangan

You can keep costs low and enjoy the journey to the full on the slow-paced boats run by Raja Ferry. They leave from Lipa Noi ferry pier on the south-western edge of the island, pulling into Thon Sala in Phangan a couple of hours later. You’ll need to decide if you’ll be staying a night in the home of the Full Moon Party (recommended – those shindigs are awesome!) or just the day. Both are possibilities, because the last departure to Koh Tao is at 5pm with Seatran Discovery.

Adding extra trips en route to Koh Tao

Of course, going for an island hop means adding in a transfer, spending all day traveling, and dragging your luggage around with you. It’s not ideal, but does give you a chance to set foot on another of the legendary vacay destinations of the Land of Smiles. You can simplify things a little by using 12Go.asia to book and manage all the individual legs of your trip.

Koh Samui to Koh Tao by private speedboat

Koh Samui to Koh Tao by private speedboat charter

Time – 1.5 hours+, depending on the stops you make Price – $1000+ Comfort – 5/5

Get from Koh Samui to Koh Tao traveling by Private boat

Calling all A-listers and jet setters, private charter speedboats are your chance to travel between Koh Samui and Koh Tao in real style. As the name implies, they are reserved for you and only you. That means the rather astronomical price can be divided up between all members of your party (it’s usually based on at least four passengers, with surcharges for any extras).

Can include trips to nearby islands

Bonuses include a beach pickup right by your hotel anywhere on the island – no need for morning taxi transfers here. You can also tailor-make an itinerary for the day. Yep, this isn’t just about getting from A to B, because the price usually includes stops at the Instagram-worthy Nang Yuan Island and snorkeling hotspots in Mango Bay. It promises to be a real adventure on the Thai Gulf, albeit one you’ll need to fork out for!

Whatever way you choose to go between Koh Samui and Koh Tao, you can look forward to setting foot on one of the Thai Gulf’s more authentic isles. It’s famed for its diving scene, but after encountering reef sharks and brain corals, you can also get stuck into lush forests, hiking paths, and a buzzing nightlife scene. Bon voyage!

Koh Samui to Koh Tao FAQ

The ferries between Koh Samui and Koh Tao offered by Songserm is usually the most affordable option on the menu. That’s because it’s the slower of the two fast boats, with journey times in the region of 2.5 hours to get you to the turtle island. You can easily compare and contrast the tickets of all the popular routes mentioned in this guide over on 12Go.asia .

If you simply cannot wait to get those dive tanks on your back and start enjoying the coral gardens and cliff-backed beaches of Koh Tao, look for the Lomprayah ferry. They offer the quickest route from Koh Samui to Koh Tao, taking a mere 1.5 hours in total on the water. Of course, you will need to factor in a little extra time to get to and from your hotel and the pier, but Tao’s small size means that rarely takes ages on the far side.

Going full throttle in a private speedboat with no pitstops for snorkeling along the way, you could do the trip in around an hour or so. However, most passengers will be on commercial ferries, the fastest of the ferry operators are Lomprayah. They complete the journey in 1.5 hours and tickets can be booked in advance online via 12Go.asia .

By boat – there’s 41 miles of sparkling sea to cross before you can start exploring those resplendent coral reefs! The only thing you need to decide is what particular ferry you’ll go for. Check out 12Go.asia to see the list of ferry tickets with a variety of different ferry companies.

Koh Tao has been a magnet for scuba divers since anyone can remember. Coral reefs, blue sinkholes, shipwrecks, and shark-infested coves all see to that. However, underwater is just part of the pull. There are also gold-tinged beaches from Sai Daeng to pearly Sai Nuan, along with mountains draped in misty jungles, and a pumping nightlife scene with bamboo bars that rock until sunup. It’s got a little something for everyone with marine passion. Answer: Yes!

Leave at least five days on Koh Tao if you’re planning on getting a PADI qualification – you’ll need to complete training dives and other exercises which can take a while. If not, it’s still a good idea to have at least three or four days here. From snorkeling in Shark Bay to hiking the rocks of Chalok Bay, there’s loads to get through.

  • The catamaran and speedboat is the quickest way  to get from Koh Samui to Koh Tao.

The Cheapest Way From Koh Samui to Koh Tao

ferry in koh tao

The only way to reach Koh Tao is by boat, and so the most commonly used and cheapest option is to take the ferry.

The ferry from Koh Samui takes approximately 3-4 hours, depending on the ferry you choose. You may also need to make a stop by Koh Phangan , but this is just to pick up and drop off passengers and doesn’t add too much to the timetable.

There are two main companies that have ferry services throughout the day. Lomprayah and Songserm are two of the most reputable companies and have the biggest boats. They are reliable, comfortable and affordable.

There are around six ferries departing each day, from 8.00am until 3.00pm. You can book the ferry online or from the box office at the pier – the price is usually the same as the one advertised on 12Go.Asia , which is around $16 USD depending on which ferry you choose.

Note that the pier you depart from will also depend on the company you choose and the time.

ferry pier in koh tao

For Lomprayah ferries, most of the boats depart from Maenam Samui Pier , in the north of Koh Samui , for Songsern, you will most likely depart from Na Thon , Koh Samui, on the West side of the island.

There are also some ferries that depart from Bangrak Pier (also known as Big Buddha Pier), though these are private, local companies and are not available to book online.

It’s recommended you arrive at the ferry 30 minutes early to allow time for boarding.

All ferries in Koh Tao arrive at Mae Haad Pier , which is the only pier on the island.

The Fastest Way from Koh Samui to Koh Tao

Ferries in Koh Tao

If you’re looking for a faster alternative, you can opt for a speedboat or catamaran ride from Koh Samui to Koh Tao.

Speedboats are known for their speed and agility, allowing you to reach Koh Tao in approximately 1.5-2 hours, depending on where you depart from.

Lomprayah also have speedboats and catamarans, but you can also get a speedboat with Seatran Discovery, who depart from near Fishermans Village on Koh Samui.

If you choose Lomprayah, note that their speedboats may also depart from Na Thon Pier, which will take 2 hours to Koh Samui. Their catamarans and speedboats usually depart from Maenam Samui Pier .

Speedboats usually cost around $19 USD, and are quick and safe to travel on. Most speedboats are indoors, so no need to worry about your hair blowing into knots and the water soaking your clothes.

Koh Samui to Koh Tao

Just like with the ferry, it’s important to check the departure time and pier for speedboats to Koh Tao from Koh Samui. The departure piers are usually either Bangrak Pier (Big Buddha Pier) and Maenam Pier.

Although it’s the fastest way to Koh Tao, there are not as many speedboats as ferries. So to secure your spot, it’s advisable to book your ticket online in advance.

Arrive at the designated pier at least 30 minutes before the departure time.

Koh Samui To Koh Tao

Koh Samui to Koh Tao

As two of the most beautiful Thai island destinations, travelling from Koh Samui to Koh Tao is highly recommended.

Spending a few days in each place will allow you to experience many different aspects of the local culture while discovering a myriad of enchanting natural attractions .

Koh Samui to Koh Tao, Ferry Times, Duration, Catamaran Price & Schedule

A second ferry is slightly slower, has three departures per day, and tickets cost 620 baht. The third and cheapest boat leaves Samui daily at 11am and arrivals at Koh Tao at 2:30pm.

Since the total travel time from Koh Samui to Koh Tao takes anywhere from two to three hours, bring along some seasickness medication if you need it. If the sea is choppy, it is recommended to take the faster catamarans which offer air-conditioned seating.

Once you get to Koh Tao, you can choose from songthaew taxis or motorbikes to get around. There are no vehicle rental options here since the island is rather small, but getting around by foot or scooter is fairly easy and convenient. Keep in mind that you should only rent a scooter if you have some experience as the roads of Koh Tao are notoriously small and prone to accidents.

Otherwise, renting a songthaew is the safest option; besides, they are relatively cheap to hire, and they are a convenient way of getting to further destinations within the island.

For island hopping, tour operators use the longtail boats to explore beaches or go snorkelling. Longtail boats are a scenic way of getting around the beaches and are affordable.

We felt confident straight away from his teaching and we had an amazing experience. We saw so much in two dives in koh tao. Daniel filmed underwater on both dives and created a videos to show our friends and family. The food was excellent, they provided us with breakfast and dinner including drinks and snacks throughout the day. Can’t recommend enough. Read more Written November 10, 2019

  • WaterSlice 0 contributions 5.0 of 5 bubbles Koh Tao Dives, SW Pinnacle, & Sail Rock My wife and I chose Calypso Diving for two days of dives on our honeymoon, and we couldn’t have been happier! Our dive guide, Steffen, was incredible. Steffen took care tonmale sure we were both comfortable and well informed for our dives. My wife is newly certified and Steffen made sure she felt safe and didn’t go out of her comfort zone. The dives were beautiful and the boat was excellent. We were well fed with ciabatta sandwiches for breakfast and Thai food for lunch on our surface interval. Steffen also made an amazing video which we purchased to remember the dives. Highly recommend Calypso to anyone who is looking for a great dive experience on Koh Samui. Read more Written September 29, 2019

  • TR42 0 contributions 5.0 of 5 bubbles Worth the extra A bit more expensive than some of the other companies but worth the extra. Big cataman with a sun deck at the rear and with plenty of room to spread out. When you look across at some of the other boats anchored up with everyone squashed in and some quite small boats, you realise how much better it is. Very friendly team that look after you very well in and out of the water. Had a great days diving and snorkelling and would use them again. Read more Written August 24, 2019

I had a really great time at both dive sites. The dive sites were filled with all kinds of different fish and sea creatures and we had good visability most of the time. They have a very good boat where you can move around and relax on 2 decks, and it's also equiped with 2 toilets. Excellent and calm divemasters. All in all a very nice and safe dive trip and I can assure you I will return, so I would recommend this company to anyone in Samui who would like to go diving. Read more Written August 19, 2019
  • MatthiasRueegg 0 contributions 4.0 of 5 bubbles Discover Scuba Diving with Daniel Djukic Me and my girlfriend participated in the Discover Scuba Diving program of Calypso Diving, which consisted of a one day- trip to Ko Tao. During this trip we were given the opportunity to participate in two diving sessions, which both lasted for approximately 45 minutes. Calypso Diving picked us up with a minivan at our hotel early in the morning, arranged transportation to Ko Tao, provided the whole equipment and lunch and dropped us off again at our hotel afterwards. Everthing was organized really well. Before this, both of us had no experience with scuba diving as we had never done anything comparable (not even snorkeling). Our guide, Daniel Djukic, took excellent care of us. Not only did he dispel all of our concerns by explaining the whole concept on an easy and understandable level, but also managed to make the whole experience unforgetable, showed us the beautiful underwater flora and fauna and took overall good care of our small group of 3. 10/10 would dive with Daniel again. • Michaela1975 0 contributions 5.0 of 5 bubbles Great Dives, great communication & service We did a refresher and two dives with Calypso this July. As I have some health issues and as we had not dived in a few years, I wrote to Calypso ahead of time to feel out if they could accommodate us. Dominic in the office provided excellence customer service. Is communication with us was great, super informative, and he made us feel good about going with Calypso. On the day of the tour, we met Dirk who was our dive instructor for the refresher. Dirk had clearly been briefed by Dominic and was super accommodating. He was so nice and calm that any anxiety about diving after so many years went away in no time. He was always by our side and took the time to explain everything. We both felt so well taken care off that day, it was amazing. The crew on the boat is great, too. The drive to Koh Tao is about 1 hour 45 minutes but totally worth it. Both dives were great with perfect visibility. In between, the crew served a wonderful Thai lunch. In the morning, they provided yummy Italian ciabattas. All in all, a great experience. We will be back! Read more Written July 23, 2019
  • cullen589 0 contributions 5.0 of 5 bubbles Introductory diving day... an insight to another world! I care on my own because my partner was unwell with a cold so was quite nervous but the diving instructor (Michael) was great at explaining everything and took his time with me especially when I had a few small hiccups along the way. I felt totally safe here and instantly loved the trip. I wish I had more time on the island to do the certification, I will be back at some point and hope to compete the course when I do. Calypso diving is a great tour to go with. Great team, good food and it’s an incredible feeling to be able to breathe underwater and see the beautiful creatures and scenery in the deep blue sea! Thank you so much calypso and special thanks to Michael too :) Read more Written May 15, 2019

  • Paul R 0 contributions 5.0 of 5 bubbles Great Dive Operation This was the second time we used Calypso Diving for our dive vacation to Koh Samui, Thailand. They have a great catamaran dive boat, which is stable and offers room to move about the boat, unlike other dive operators in Koh Samui who pack you in to your narrow speed boat with only room to sit and hang on. For the second time we have seen a Whale Shark at Sail Rock and it was amazing! Our Dive Master Daniel Djukic was outstanding. He offered a friendly chat on board and was an excellent guide under the water. He captured many of the sea creatures we saw on film and organized a wonderful dive video capturing our time under water for a modest price. The only negative item I noted was that some of the gear (wet suits) was a bit worn but that was not a distraction. I would highly recommend Calypso Diving. Read more Written April 21, 2019

Categories Asia , Thailand

Looking for the best Koh Samui day trips? Look no further. Here you’ll find an updated list of the top-rated Koh Samui tours and day trips you can organize on your own (including trips to Ang Thong Marine Park and Koh Tao).

I get why you chose Koh Samui as part of your trip to Thailand! As the second-largest island in Thailand after Phuket, Koh Samui offer a ton for all kinds of travelers.

Here you’ve got beautiful white-sand beaches lined by palm trees, plenty of cultural attractions and beautiful temples, and you can even go chasing waterfalls. There are a few things to do in Koh Samui that you shouldn’s miss such as Bophut Beach, Chaweng, the Big Buddha and Wat Plai Laem.

It’s this diversity of landscapes that makes Koh Samui so famous together with other popular destinations.

But if you have one or two extra days, there are some incredible day trips that should be on your Koh Samui itinerary such as the Ang Thong Marine Park. Check out the best day trips from Koh Samui – from hanging out with elephants in a responsible way, to snorkeling with turtles, these are some incredible tours to choose.

Table of Contents

Visit the Ang Thong Marine Park from Koh Samui

day trip to koh tao from koh samui

Ang Thong Marine Park is a pristine archipelago made of 42 islands scattered along the Gulf of Thailand. It’s home to a very diverse landscape made of limestone peaks as tall as 400 meters, white sand beaches, dense rainforest jungle, hidden coves, lakes, and stunning waterfalls. In short, it’s a stunning place. Over the years I’ve visited many places in Thailand, and Ang Thong National Park remains one of my top 3 destinations.

The islands of Ang Thong appeared in the novel ‘The Beach’ by Alex Garland, and even if the movie with DiCaprio was actually filmed in Phi Phi Leh, these islands became more known thanks to the novel.

There are many operators offering Koh Samui boat trips to Ang Thong, but I personally went with  Boutique Yachting , a tour operator that offer luxury day trips from Koh Samui to Ang Thong Park on a beautiful, wooden motor-operated sailing yacht. It was an incredible experience so let me tell you more about it.

The tour includes pick up from your hotel and transfer to Petcherat Pier. From here it takes 2 hours to sail to Ang Thong National Park, but there are day beds on the sundeck to relax on and they serve a buffet breakfast on board. The tour also includes unlimited soft drinks throughout the day and lunch, and snacks (fresh fruit and cake).

You’ll first visit the island of Koh Wua Talap , where you can either relax on the beach or walk to the viewpoint for this INCREDIBLE view.

day trip to koh tao from koh samui

You’ll then head to Mae Koh Island where you’ll fin an inland saltwater lagoon called  Emerald Lake  (Thale Nai). Again you have the option to hike up to see it, or you can relax at the beach.

On the way back to Koh Samui, hopefully you’ll be able to admire a beautiful sunset, and it’s not that rare to also spot dolphins and whales!

You can read about my experience in Ang Thong National Park in detail. Boutique Yachting trips often sell out, so make sure you book in advance to avoid disappointment!

➤   Check out availability and book the  Ang Thong Full-Day Discovery Cruise from Koh Samui  directly online.  BOOK IT HERE

You can find cheaper Ang Thong National Marine Park tours from Koh Samui, but for me this is the best Ang Thong National Park tour and the price tag of this one is totally worth it in my opinion.

➤ Another good option is the Mu Ko Ang Thong Park: Semi-private Sunset Cruise Tour that gets great reviews from travelers. The itinerary is the same, but here you’ll also get to kayak. This tour is cheaper (although keep in mind that there aren’t good, super budget tours from Koh Samui to the park), and it’s a little less luxury as an experience. CHECK IT OUT

Go On a 4WD Wild Jungle Safari Tour in Koh Samui

day trip to koh tao from koh samui

One of the most popular day trips from Koh Samui has surprisingly nothing to do with the sea and island hopping. The 4WD Wild Jungle Safari Tour has won the 2019 Get Your Guide Award for Best Adrenaline Rush tour in Asia, so you know why so many people love it!

On this tour you’ll go on a safari through the jungle and mountains of Koh Samui in a rugged ex-army jeep. You’ll visit the iconic Grandmother and Grandfather rocks, swim in the natural pool by Koh Samui’s largest waterfall, and go on two zip line cable rides. Then you’ll also get to visit a few viewpoints, the Big Buddha, and Buddha’s Magic Garden, so it’s a really intense and comprehensive tour that will show you tons of the top attractions on the island. The tour also includes lunch, pick up and drop off. BOOK IT HERE

Choose a Koh Tao Day Trip for the Best Snorkeling

day trip to koh tao from koh samui

Koh Tao is an island located to the east of the Surat Thani coastline, and it’s a perfect day trip destination from Koh Samui if you’re into snorkeling or diving. This small island is in fact famous for scuba diving, and it’s actually one of the cheapest places in the world you can get a scuba diving license! Although for that, you’ll need to spend more than one day on the island…

READ MORE : 13 Best Things To Do in Koh Tao

The name Koh Tao in Thai means Turtle Island, and the island is called like that because it serves as a natural habitat for sea turtles. While the population of sea turtles has significantly declined from the past few decades, you can still spot green and hawksbill turtles, particularly in the Thian Og Bay area. Can you imagine how cool it is to snorkel or dive with the turtles?

➤ You can potentially organize a Koh Samui to Koh Tao day trip on your own, but it’s a pretty long ferry ride (1 hour 30-45 minutes) for a day trip, especially if you add the time to go to the pier etc. It’s one of those cases where I’d strongly recommend a tour. If you prefer to travel from Koh Samui to Koh Tao independently, though, you can check out the ferry schedule and price here .

➤ Like snorkeling? Check out this Full-Day Snorkeling Tour on Koh Tao . You’ll be able to get a glimpse into the underwater world of Koh Tao and see the impressive reef system first-hand. This Koh Tao boat trip includes pickup from your hotel, lunch, and snorkeling at two different spots. BOOK IT HERE

➤ If you want to go one step further, check out the Diving Trip at Koh Tao from Koh Samui . The tour includes hotel pickup and drop-off, ferry tickets, dive equipment, lunch, and two supervised dives. This Koh Tao tour is made for non-certified divers, where an instructor will teach you the basics of diving before going on the first dive, so no experience is necessary. BOOK IT HERE

If you’re a certified diver, any stage from beginner to advanced, check out this other diving tour that’s more appropriate. BOOK IT HERE

Beautiful Views at Koh Nang Yuan

day trip to koh tao from koh samui

Koh Nang Yuan is an idyllic island that’s located offshore from Koh Tao , just a 15-20 minutes boat ride away. This tiny island is known for its pristine aquamarine waters and the picturesque rocks that provide the perfect backdrop for an idyllic day at the beach. There’s also some great snorkeling to be done here because of the reef.

When you are in Koh Nang Yuan, don’t be lazy and walk up to the viewpoint – the views are incredible and from up there you can enjoy a different perspective of the island’s pristine beauty. The viewpoint hike will take about 20 minutes, but you’ll be rewarded with one of the best views ever. However, make sure you bring closed shoes and mosquito repellent for the short hike, the mosquitoes ate us alive!

Because of its proximity to Koh Tao, it’s best to combine Koh Tao and Koh Nang Yuan in one trip. In this case, I don’t recommend going on your own as going to take the ferry in Koh Samui, ride the ferry to Koh Tao, and board another boat for Koh Nang Yuan would take you ages.

➤ Check out the Koh Nang Yuan Boat Trip from Koh Samui . This one day trip to Koh Tao and Koh Nang Yuan tour includes pick up and drop off, snorkeling off the coast off Koh Tao and lunch, and free time in Koh Nang Yuan to enjoy the beach and hike to the viewpoint. You can find this same exact tour on other platforms, but on Civitatis it’s cheaper. I’ve used this platform myself before, and always had great experiences. BOOK IT HERE

Full Moon Party in Koh Phangan + Koh Phangan Day Trip

day trip to koh tao from koh samui

If I say Koh Phangan, I’m pretty sure you’ll think about the Full Moon party. Held every month on the beach at the time of (guess what?!?) the full moon, the Full Moon party attracts thousands of people every time. The party lasts all night long and it’s not something you’ll easily forget.

➤ It’s easy to organize a day trip to Koh Phangan from Koh Samui, it’s just a 30 minute ferry ride. If you’re going just for the Full Moon party, I suggest to book a ferry ticket specific for the party. For less than $30, you’ll get picked up from your hotel in Koh Samui and brought by ferry to Koh Phangan. You can choose your ferry time between 6 PM and 11 PM. The next morning you’ll get back to Koh Samui by ferry and you’ll get dropped off to your hotel for some much-needed sleep. BOOK IT HERE

day trip to koh tao from koh samui

But there is more to this island than the boisterous nightlife scene and the infamous Full Moon party. If you prefer a quiet time at the beach, Koh Phangan is still a great destination for that. As the fifth biggest island in Thailand, Koh Phangan is home to a tropical jungle interior and is dotted with gorgeous, white sand beaches. The best ones are Chaloklum & Mae Haad, Haad Yao & Haad Salad, and Thong Sala.

➤ You can easily go on excursion to Koh Phangan on your own by taking the ferry from either Nathon Pier or Bangrak Pier. From these two ports the journey lasts just 30 minutes. If you’re visiting during the high season, it’s highly suggested that your book your ticket in advance. BOOK YOUR TICKET HERE

➤ If you prefer a hassle-free tour, check out the Koh Phangan Day Tour by Junk Boat . You’ll sail on a beautiful wooden junk boat, go snorkeling at the Koh Ma Reef in Koh Phangan, and enjoy some time at a secluded beach. A Responsible Koh Samui Elephant Tour To Samui Elephant Sanctuary

day trip to koh tao from koh samui

I’m always extremely careful when recommending an experience that involves animals, so I’ve done my research before recommending this one.

The problem is that most elephant “sanctuaries” or parks aren’t sustainable at all. Most of them offer elephant rides which is a big no no, and many chain the elephants which is also totally wrong.

There are very few parks in Southeast Asia that are doing things right, and Samui Elephant Sanctuary in Koh Samui is one of them. Opened just in 2018, this is the first ethical park on the island; here you’ll get to interact with 6 rescued elephants.

I’ve visited the Elephant Nature Park in Chiang Mai twice in the past, which is considered the most sustainable elephant park in Thailand, and absolutely loved the experience. The owners of the Samui Elephant Sanctuary are following the same guidelines that are given by the Save Elephant Foundation, and operate in the same way of Elephant Nature Park.

The cost of the visit at the time of writing is 3000 baht for adults ($98) and 1500 baht for kids. Yes, it’s more expensive than other elephant parks, but you know where your money is going here and that the animals are treated fairly. When booking a visit, you can choose between the Morning and the Afternoon Tour .

During the tour you’ll get to feed the elephants, walk with them and observe them as they bathe in the pool and play in the mud pit. It’s ery similar to the program at Elephant Nature Park in Chiang Mai. The tour also includes transportation from and to your hotel and lunch.

Day Trips from Koh Samui to Koh Taen

day trip to koh tao from koh samui

Koh Taen (also called Koh Tan) is a small island located to the south of Koh Samui, and it’s part of the Koh Samui archipelago. Being so close, it’s a great destination for a day trip tour from Koh Samui for people who don’t want to spend too much time on the boat itself.

This tiny island is a haven for those looking to be one with nature. It’s not as visited as other islands in the Gulf of Thailand such as Koh Phangan or Koh Tao, so there’s an untouched feel to it. For the same reason though, there are limited tourist facilities available on the island, so if you’re looking for a variety of bars and restaurants, this isn’t for you.

But to make up for the lack of tourist facilities, there are some beautiful beaches on Koh Taen. If you like silence and peace head to the eastern side of the island where you can find a long deserted beach. You can often have it all to yourself, especially if you visit during the off-peak season.

If you go to the southern side, you’ll find coral reefs and all kinds of sea life, which makes it the perfect spot if you’re into snorkeling. Sometimes you can even spot sea turtles and manta rays here!

➤ To get from Koh Samui to Koh Taen on your own, make your way to the fishing village of Thong Krut located in the southern side of Koh Samui. Head to the pier and look for a longtail boat to bring you there. The trip will take just 15 to 20 minutes.

➤ You’d rather go with a tour? Check out the Koh Taen & Mudsum: Half-Day Island Hopping and Snorkeling half-day tour, which includes pickup from your hotel in Koh Samui. You’ll sail on a luxury wooden yacht with a jacuzzi. The first stop is for snorkeling at Koh Taen, followed by lunch on the beach. Then you’ll have free time at the beach in Koh Mudsum, or you can kayak as well. This is one of the best Koh Samui Snorkeling Tours. BOOK IT HERE

Hang Out With Pigs in Koh Madsum

day trip to koh tao from koh samui

Koh Madsum is another tiny island off the coast of Koh Samui. It neighbors Koh Taen, which we’ve just talked about. This is easily accessible from the main Koh Samui island via a boat ride, so it’s perfect if you’re planning to go island hopping from Koh Samui. Many of the people who’ve been here consider it one of the best kept secrets of the Samui Archipelago.

Koh Madsums is quiet and unspoilt, and has a rocky coast. Koh Madsum is also known as the Pig Island , because there are pigs that roam on the beach. Pretty crazy right?

It’s a lot of fun to play with the pigs, but please respect the animals while on the island. These aren’t wild pigs (or boars, some people say they are actually boars), the owner is the restaurant’s owner. Don’t touch them unless the owner tells you it’s ok to do so, and don’t feed them your own food that would be bad for the pigs.

Aside from the pigs, one other thing that Koh Madsum is famous for is for its snorkeling spots. It’s not a case that another nickname for the island is Coral Island because of the abundant coral reef system and colorful fishes that you’ll see when you go snorkeling. On the beach you’ll find tone restaurant and a kayak rental; renting a kayak is a great option to go explore beyond the coastline.

➤ To get from Koh Samui to Koh Madsum on your own, make your way to the fishing village of Thong Krut (the same spot for heading to Koh Taen). Head to the pier and look for a longtail boat to bring you there. Negotiate directly with the owner, the trip shouldn’t cost more than 1500-2000 baht at the most.

➤ Another option is to join the Original Pig Island Experience , one of the best Koh Samui boat tours in my opinion. After pickup, you’ll head for some snorkeling to Koh Tan, followed by a short hike through the mangrove forest. Then you’ll head to Koh Madsum where you’ll be able to enjoy the beach, play with the pigs, and go kayaking. You’ll head back to Koh Samui after lunch. BOOK IT HERE

And there you go! Hopefully this list of the best Koh Samui excursions and Koh Samui day tours was useful to organize your trip. Let me know in the comments if you have any questions about Koh Samui and bon voyage!

About the journey from Koh Samui to Koh Tao

Taking the journey from Koh Samui to Koh Tao is a chance to travel between some of the most popular and beautiful islands in Thailand. Koh Tao translates to “Turtle Island”, an appropriate name for several reasons as the mountain peaks of the island makes it look like a turtle’s shell as well as the Hawksbill and Green turtle populations that can be seen on the surrounding shores and come to breed here.

For a chance to see the turtles, or just to explore the vibrant aquatic life, Koh Tao offers affordable snorkeling and scuba diving options at over 80 different diving schools on the island. After a day of adventure or simple relaxation, Koh Tao has a great buzzing nightlife and many places to dine on delicious and fresh food.

Getting to the island of Koh Tao means sea travel, which can be booked with a ferry trip or with a combined bus and ferry service. Ferry travel is relatively cheap and gets you to your destination with ease, speed, and comfort. A bus and ferry booking is a great option for those looking for extra convenience when getting to the departing pier on Koh Samui. For a bonus, some bus/ferry operators do day trips, so you can make the most of your journey and see some sights you otherwise might not get the chance to see.

Arriving in Koh Tao off the ferry from Koh Samui is an exciting experience. The tiny island region is made up of a few forest-covered peaks connected by sandbars, and is perhaps the closest you can get to a true tropical island paradise.

What to see when traveling from Koh Samui to Koh Tao

It is a 62 kilometer (39 mile) trip by ocean from Koh Samui to Koh Tao along the Chumphon Archipelago. As you travel north between the islands of Koh Samui and Koh Tao, you will pass the Mu Koh Ang Thong National Marine Park which is spread over an island archipelago where you can hike up forested peaks to enjoy expansive views or make the most of the warm waters through swimming and other watersport activities.

Between Koh Samui and Koh Tao sits Koh Phangan, another popular island-hopping destination for party goers and beach lovers that is famous for its full moon parties.

Taking a ferry

Ferry travel is the standard option for getting from Koh Samui to Koh Tao, and therefore has a few operators to choose from. Most ferries depart a few times a day and take around 1.5 to 2 hours. Ferries have air conditioning and toilets on board. Some boats also have extras such as the availability of snacks and drinks to purchase.

Many ferry operators now do accommodation pick ups in Koh Samui for an additional cost. Although most ferries from Koh Samui to Koh Tao are direct, there are catamaran services available which makes a stopover in Koh Phangan.

Taking a bus-ferry

The combined bus and ferry services from Koh Samui to Koh Tao allow you to be picked up and taken to the departure pier on Koh Samui from a convenient location depending on the operator. Different operators vary in what they offer, as some can do an airport pick up in Koh Samui or will pick you up at your accommodation.

Another option is to take a shared day tour which includes a visit to an extra island and the chance to snorkel among some beautiful coral reefs before being dropped on Koh Tao at the end of the day. Once you arrive in Koh Tao, the small size of the island means it is easy to traverse on foot.

What to expect when visiting Koh Samui

Koh Samui is a popular island in the Gulf of Thailand, east of the mainland. As the country’s second-largest island, Koh Samui offers a beautiful mix of culture and nature. It’s also more developed than its neighbours, but not less appealing.

From the beaches alone, there are over 40 in Koh Samui — all picturesque and white-sand shores. This makes the island a favourite for relaxing, snorkelling and soaking up the sun. Away from the shore, you can immerse yourself in history and culture with a temple visit or munch on fresh seafood at Fisherman’s Village.

They are about 30 minutes from Koh Samui by longtail boat and offer the usualy Thailand beach amenities. There is one resort, and kayak rental available.

Other Koh Samui day trips you might take will not involve a destination, rather an activity. There are many opportunities to join a day trip for snorkeling, sailing, diving, or kayaking in Koh Samui.

Koh Tao to Koh Samui

Koh Tao to Koh Samui

Best options, other options, koh tao to koh samui schedule, how to get from koh tao to koh samui.

Crystal clear waters and idyllic beaches, lush tropical greenery and modern ‘island style’ shopping molls, fancy jewellery shops and colourful local markets – you name it – Samui has it all. No wonder that the third-largest island in Thailand, Samui has become popular amongst both luxurious holiday makers and backpackers on a budget who can each find the experience, accommodation, activities and entertainment that they come for. Whether its candle-lit dinners on post-card beaches, wild and adventurous partying through the night, treks through forests and jungles or days spent oiled up on the beach, Koh Samui is the right choice to get it.

Samui makes a great contrast to Koh Tao with its quiet village life and almost no night scene. Though there are diving and snorkelling tours offered on Samui, you’d better make all the underwater explorations on Koh Tao, and dedicate your time on Samui to partying, shopping or sunbathing.

Getting to Koh Samui from Koh Tao

There are three ferry companies which link Koh Tao to Koh Samui via Koh Phangan. They are Lomprayah High Speed Sai 2 , Seatran Discovery and Songserm .

Lomprayah takes about 1¾ hr to bring passengers from Koh Tao to Samui, leaving from Mae Haad on Koh Tao and arriving to Maenam on Samui. Tickets cost from THB600 to THB750, depending on the departure time. There are boats at 9.30am and 3pm.

Seatran Discovery offers similar service but is a bit slower and cheaper: transit time is 2½ hrs, the ticket cost is THB 580. On Samui boats moor to Bangrak Seatran Pier. There are three departures a day at 6.30am, 9am and 3pm.

Songserm has only one express boat a day at 10am which arrives to Samui via Koh Phangan at 1.30pm. It costs THB 450 and the hotel pick-ups are included in the price.

Tip: As your sea travel between Koh Tao and Koh Samui will last from two to three hours, have all the necessary medications at hand if you are prone to seasickness. When the sea is choppy, opt for Seatran instead of Lomprayah, as the catamaran actually rides the swell, while Seatran cuts through it, which help avoid endless ups and downs.

Getting around

Koh Samui is large and you will need a way to get around easily, since doing it on foot is very limiting and uncomfortably hot, but there are many far better options available depending on how you like to get around.

Taxis (songthaews) are a great way to travel long distances on the island, or if you want to go out partying and know you shouldn't drive yourself around. While they are convenient and can get you everywhere from anywhere, this is probably the most expensive option, as you can expect to pay between 50 and 100 THB a person which adds up quickly.

Motorcycles are a fantastic way to get around. Motorcycles (and bicycles, too) can be rented from almost every resort on the island. Rentals are cheap, petrol is cheap, and they give you the freedom to go just about anywhere you want to go as you explore the island’s natural wonders. A word of caution though, you will undoubtedly see many tourists about with bandages and scrapes on their arms and legs, almost all of the time these are caused by accidents on scooters. You should be able to find a scooter for less than 200 THB a day. Most of the rental shops insist that you leave your passport behind. While this is a bit unnerving, it is also standard practice throughout Thailand, so be very careful with your scooter if you want to avoid any trouble.

Where to stay

Hat Chaweng is packed with all kinds of accommodation to suit any budget. It is the epicentre of the action, and the northern part of the beach can be quite noisy. Hat Lamai is another popular choice attracting holiday-makers both with its long stretch of white sand and a good choice of restaurants, bars and shops along the main road. In between the two beaches hides a little gem of Crystal Bay with – as the name suggests – crystal clear waters embraced with imposing boulders of a small bay. Hat Bang Rak (or Big Buddha Beach) leis relatively close to the airport (you may hear some noise), but the white sand of its western part compensate for it. Bo Phut is of particular interest not because of the beach but thanks to its trendy boutique hotels peppering Fishermen’s Village where strong Chinese influence can be felt even today. Families often opt for Mae Nam with its gentle sea. The West Coast is not a good choice if you come for the sea, but the sunsets are exceptional there. Tip: Do not spend all your time on Samui on one and the same beach; try at least a couple of them and you will be rewarded with the diversity which this island has to offer.

Besides usual diving, snorkelling, kayaking, jungle-trekking and waterfalls find a couple of hours to visit the only rum distillery in Thailand, Magic Alambic . They produce Caribbean rum with a variety of natural flavours (obviously, they have coconut rum, too). They offer tasting sessions and sell rum, too (600-700 THB per 700ml bottle). Located in Baan Bang Kao. Travellers with the little ones in tow will love Paradise Park , which is a considerably large petting zoo, which is also one of the best viewpoints on the island.

  • Last Updated: April 2, 2024

An epic list of all the best things to do in Koh Phangan, Thailand. Yes, there’s more to the island than just the Full Moon Party!

Koh Phangan is a relatively small island in the Gulf of Thailand nestled in between Koh Tao and Koh Samui .

Yet it has everything you could wish for in a tropical island paradise: towering palm trees, white-sand beaches, coral reefs with exotic fish, and lush jungles filled with waterfalls all framed by the idyllic turquoise ocean.

But when most travellers think of Koh Phangan, they think of wild parties, neon paint and buckets full of alcohol.

Koh Phangan is home to the famous Full Moon Party. Travellers from all over the globe flock to this island to dance the night away with other tourists.

If you are a true party animal, you may just have the best night of your life at the Full Moon Party.

This beach party is absolutely epic and so much fun, but many people focus on this party scene too much and overlook all the other amazing parts of Koh Phangan.

Things To Do In Koh Phangan Thailand

With a reputation as one of the best beaches and a top Koh Phangan attraction, Bottle Beach is a true gem of Thailand’s gulf.

Located in the north of the island, the beach is pretty hard to get to but the one-hour trek through the jungle is a fun adventure.

Wear good walking shoes and plenty of bug spray, and you’ll feel like you really earned your relaxing beach day once you arrive on the white sands of Bottle Beach.

The hike begins at Coconut Beach on the north of Koh Phangan and is completely free!

There are so many incredible sustainability and conservation initiatives happening in Thailand right now , and one of the main focuses of my most recent trip to the Land of Smiles was to learn about some of them.

Koh Phangan has always been a hub for alternative thinking and eco-conscious travellers, and I was lucky enough to spend the day at place called Indigo Coral House to discover how they are giving back to their community.

Run by the passionate duo Fatimah and Matteo, the accommodations, living areas and workshops at Indigo Coral House have been built using sustainable bamboo, and the construction methods have been refined to minimise the amount of non-renewable resources needed.

Their goal is to show local builders that bamboo is not only a fantastic construction material, but can be used to make funky, high-quality and beautiful designs too.

Indigo Coral House Bamboo Structures

That’s not all they do at Indigo Coral House though. It has also become a haven for Burmese refugees who flee over the border to escape the current turmoil.

Not only do Fatimah and Matteo offer a safe space for them to live, but they teach them art techniques such as leaf printing and weaving so they can create their own pieces and sell them at the markets to make an income.

I had the most amazing day at Indigo Coral House and felt so welcome by everybody who calls the place home.

Leaf Printed Shirts

A special thank you to Soemoechit who taught me leaf printing, Phyu Phyu Moe who cooked up the most delectable Burmese vegetarian lunch for me, and of course Fatimah and Matteo who took time out of their day to show me all that they are doing.

You can visit Indigo Coral House yourself to do art and bamboo building workshops, leaf printing, learn how to compost or just stay in some of the stunning bamboo bungalows and villas. Highly recommend if you’re coming to Koh Phangan!

After spending a big day hiking around, diving and swimming, you might want to treat your body to a Thai massage.

Let the experienced local masseuses knead, twist, and smooth the kinks out of your muscles and you’ll feel so refreshed afterward.

Thai massage is a highly revered traditional practice in the country, so you should definitely experience it at least once while travelling through Thailand.

This is a great way to relax when you visit Koh Phangan.

This protected archipelago in the Gulf of Thailand is a stunning oasis of natural beauty.

Filled with hiking trails, limestone caves, towering cliffs, palm forests, coral reefs, sandy beaches, and much more, Ang Thong National Marine Park is a nature-lovers paradise.

You can only enter the marine park via a government-approved tour boat.

Luckily there are plenty of great tour companies that offer day trips from Koh Phangan to Ang Thong .

Ang Thong Marine Park

A trip to Koh Ma should definitely be on your list of Koh Phangan sightseeing.

This tiny island is actually separate from Koh Phangan, but is connected to the main island by a sand bar that is visible at low tide.

So head to the northwest of the island at low tide and you can walk along the sand bar to Koh Ma.

You can also enjoy sunbathing on the sand bar and swimming in the ocean to escape the heat.

Koh Ma

This 627-meter high mountain is one of the best Koh Phangan attractions.

Hiking to the top will provide you with some amazing views, and the whole journey takes about 2-3 hours round trip.

You can hike the trail in sturdy sneakers or hiking boots, and be sure to pack lots of water and sunscreen.

To avoid the mid-day heat, try to hike in the early morning or late afternoon.

Khao Ra is located near the north of the island and the hike is free.

There’s something absolutely magical about watching the sunset from a tropical island.

Even better is watching an island sunset up high at a rooftop bar so you can enjoy an incredible panoramic view.

Koh Phangan has lots of rooftop bars and restaurants that make great vantage points for sunset. Here are a few of the best ones:

  • Secret Mountain: Open 10 am to 9 pm
  • Amsterdam Bar : Open 12 pm to 1 am
  • Three Sixty Bar : Open 10 am to 12 am

Scuba diving is definitely one of the best things to do in Koh Phangan, and the last time we visited proved exactly why!

The Gulf of Thailand is packed with gorgeous marine life, including tropical fish, manta rays, coral reefs, and more.

Among the best diving spots near the island are Samran Pinnacle, Hin Yippon, Koh Ma, and Ang Thong National Marine Park .

Sail Rock is arguably the best dive site in the entire Gulf of Thailand, so this is a great place to go and explore the waters.

The island has a few dive schools that can hook you up with gear or help you get your divers certification.

Personally however we recommend the absolute legends at H2O Diving in Thong Nai Pan.

Run by the incredible couple Alis and Lee, these guys are a PADI 5-Star Center and have been operating since 2003.

They use a modern and comfortable speed boat to get out to the dive sites, and this means they can actually time their trips to avoid when all the other companies go out.

For example, Sail Rock is quite far from Koh Phangan meaning all the local companies go out in the morning. For H2O however, they go out after lunch.

When I went out for my two dives with Lee, we were the only dive boat there. A pretty magical experience (check out my video below of what it was like) .

The gear they use is new and well-maintained, the staff friendly and the service they provide is some of the most professional I’ve experienced from diving in over a dozen countries.

I highly, HIGHLY recommend scuba diving with Lee, Alis and the team at H2O if going out in Koh Phangan.

Of all the Koh Phangan attractions, the beaches are undoubtedly one of the best reasons to visit/

People travel from far and wide to stretch out on the velvety white sand and swim in the crystal-clear waters of the Thai islands, so make sure you squeeze plenty of beach days into your Thailand itinerary.

While visiting Koh Phangan, head to Thong Nai Pan for the ultimate beach day.

Soak in the sun or lie in the shade under a coconut palm. Splash in the water and collect seashells.

Take plenty of photos because this beach on Koh Phangan’s northeast coast is truly beautiful.

Thong Nai Pan Beach

As the main hub of Koh Phangan, Thong Sala is a bustling town with plenty of fun things to do.

The street markets are the town’s best attraction; tourists and locals both come together in the evenings to browse through the local goods and gorge on some delicious Thai food.

The Phantip Night Market opens every evening and has some of the best street food on the island.

Every Saturday, the main street of Thong Sala turns into a Walking Street Market , also known as the Thong Sala Night Market.

At Thong Sala Night Market, the streets become pedestrian-only as local vendors fill the road with their own stalls selling souvenirs, clothing, jewelry, and other homemade goods. There is also plenty of Thai food to eat!

For a fun night in Koh Phangan, head to the Moonlight Cinema .

Located near the night market in Thong Sala, this open-air movie theater is full of comfy pillows and plays a wide variety of new and old films.

You can buy snacks and drinks at the theater as well. It’s a highlight of many who visit Koh Phangan!

  • Location : 46 Moo 1, Chaloklum Rd. Thong Sala, Ko Phangan
  • Hours : 3 pm to 1 am (opens at 1 pm on weekends)

In addition to all the ocean scenery and white-sand beaches, some of the best things to see in Koh Phangan lie inland within the lush jungle.

The island is home to lots of waterfalls where you can go have a picnic, take photos, and swim in the fresh flowing water.

Phaeng Waterfall , Than Sadet Waterfall , and Paradise Waterfall are three of the most picturesque falls on the island.

If you just hop in a taxi or songtaew and tell the driver the name of the waterfall you want to visit, they’ll know where to go.

Waterfalls Koh Phangan

Cruising through the turquoise waters and soaking in all the natural beauty is one of the best things to do in Koh Phangan.

Many of the island’s beaches have kayak rentals available, with the average price being about 150 Baht per hour.

Make sure you are reasonably fit and aware of the ocean currents before setting out on the water and don’t kayak alone.

A popular place to kayak on the island is from Wok Tum to Koh Ma because the waters are generally calm here.

Kayaking Ocean

If you want to see a lot of the island in a short amount of time, your best bet is to book a sightseeing tour.

There are a few tourism companies that offer either ATV or road trip adventures around the island , which is great if you don’t have your own form of transport.

Your tour will take you to all the best spots on the island, including beaches, waterfalls, rooftop bars, and other amazing places that you might not be able to see on your own.

For any party animals out there looking for a classic Thailand backpacker experience, add the Full Moon Party to your bucket list.

Some travelers come to Koh Phangan solely for the Full Moon Party, as it is a famous phenomenon among young travelers.

This party includes lots of neon body paint, lots of cheap mixed drinks in plastic buckets, and lots of loud music, flashing lights, and dancing.

It’s one of the best things to do in Koh Phangan if you like to party.

The party is held every full moon on Haad Rin Beach. There is a Sunrise and Sunset Beach on Haad Rin Beach, and the party is on Sunrise Beach.

Just keep in mind that lots of accommodations completely book up for the party, so book your bed as far in advance as you can!

If you love the idea of the Full Moon Party, but you won’t be in Koh Phangan during the actual full moon, have no fear!

The island also hosts a Half Moon Party at, you guessed it, every half-moon.

That means this party happens twice a month rather than just once, and it isn’t as famous but it is still super fun.

The Half Moon Party happens in the jungle instead of on the beach, and there are tons of different stages and dance floors bumping different types of music.

For a panoramic view on the south of the island, head to the Haad Rin Viewpoint.

The climb to the top only takes about 15 minutes, but in the humid, tropical heat it can be quite tiring so pack plenty of water.

The trail starts behind the Fairyland Resort on the southern tip of the island. From the top, you can enjoy views of the nearby beaches and you can even see Koh Samui in the distance.

If you’re not ready to commit to scuba diving, you can still explore Koh Phangan’s flourishing underwater marine life by snorkelling.

Snorkelling is cheap and easy, so anyone can do it. If you don’t have your own gear, you can rent a snorkel, mask, and flippers for roughly 100 Baht per hour.

One of the island’s best locations for snorkelling is Mae Haad Beach and Haad Son along the north coast.

Snorkelling Thailand

With so much natural beauty to see and partying to be done, it can be easy to forget about all the stunning temples on Koh Phangan!

But the temples are amazing representations of Thai culture and Buddhist architecture, so you should definitely try to see plenty of them.

Some of the island’s most beautiful temples are Wat Nok , Wat Khao Tham , and Wat Pho (not to be confused with the famous Wat Pho in Bangkok ).

Chinese Temple Koh Phangan

If you haven’t yet been to see a Muay Thai Boxing Match in Thailand, now is your chance!

This fast-paced, mesmerizing sport is super popular in Thailand, and watching a match is a great way for tourists to catch a glimpse of the local Thai culture.

Koh Phangan is home to 7 Muay Thai Boxing stadiums that host matches every evening. Some of them even have training classes so you can learn the basics of the sport for yourself!

To explore Koh Phangan on your own schedule, rent a motorbike and enjoy all the mobility you need.

Before renting a motorbike, make sure you have travel insurance and a copy of your passport to give the rental company.

Also take lots of photos of the bike before you ride it, so the company can’t blame any scratches or dings on you.

There are lots of motorbike rental companies around Ko Pha Ngan, and the average cost is around 150 Baht per day.

The most popular route to explore by motorbike is the west coast of the island.
