Dragonette's "Twennies" Tour at the Roxy | Concert Review + Gallery

Dragonette’s “Twennies” tour stopped in LA after successful stops in DC, London, and Vancouver, just to name a few. Dragonette returns to the stage for the first time since 2017. Fans all around the world have been itching for the moment to see her, and with an 8 city tour, I’m sure she still has so many fans waiting to be a part of the Dragonette experience. The Roxy Theatre quickly filled up as Ty Sunderland opened up for Dragonette. His remix for her song “T-shirt” has just dropped and as that song crept into his set, the crowd was already ready for her to take the stage.

The lights dimmed as the curtain rose. As the electronic bass line for “Easy” started, the crowd cheered as she walked out and grabbed the mic. The energy during even just the first few minutes of the song were electric as everyone's hands arose to their excitement. Running through her first 6 songs, it felt like she was already in the groove of the night and as she played her Twennies hit “T-shirt” you could tell the stage was meant for her, even after a few years away. She explained that her travel from the last show in Portland was one that she hoped she would forget soon because they weren’t sure if their equipment would even arrive at all. The anxiety and stress all went away as she kept the show rolling with hits from 2009’s “Fixin’ to Thrill and also her 2007 debut album “Galore.” It didn’t matter what she played though, the crowd was eating it up with ease. As the intro for “Hello” began, the crowd went into a state of euphoria as the night was winding down.. The hit that has amassed over 90 million streams on Spotify has been erupting crowds since 2010 with no signs of slowing down.

She ended the night with “Live in this City, “ an upbeat and infectiously catchy hook driven hit. The crowd sang back every word of every chorus. Of course, this was not the end as most thought. She left the stage, but emerged for a two song encore including an acoustic version of “Stormy.”

As the energy-charged crowd exited, still high from the show, they had no idea that Dragonette was going to take the stage one more time, but now just 10 minutes away at Heart WeHo. Ty Sunderland and Dragonette were celebrating the release of the “T-shirt” remix by Ty. At Heart, The crowd began to fill up just as the Roxy did, however this time the crowd not knowing that she was set to take the stage. The crowd nearly went bananas as Ty introduced Dragonette and she immediately started to sing the hit “Hello” once again. The crowd ate it all up as they handed her phones to have her record this epic Thursday night memory. She took as many as she could as all of them posed for the videos and pictures. After her performance, a club-wide dance party began as Ty’s “T-shirt” remix was blasting to everyone's enjoyment.

It’s evident that Dragonette has simply not missed it beat since 2017. Obviously, with the October release of her 5th album, it doesn't seem like she’s going anywhere, and based on the energy of this amazing night, her fans would definitely not let her go too long without gracing the stage once again.

Dragonette Takes Everyone on a Nostalgic Trip with ‘Twennies’

Dragonette puts the influences from her youth and where those experiences led her on full display with her comeback album, Twennies .

Beloved Canadian artist Dragonette has been a massive influence on electronic music since she first stepped onto the scene in 2005. Over the years, she’s brought undeniable musical nostalgia while layering in modern rock and electronic music elements for added effect. While her solo work has been profound, her collaborations with everyone from Martin Solveig on the chart-topping “ Hello ” to Kaskade have been just as fantastic, and she even co-wrote for Cyndi Lauper . Additionally, Dragonette has gained quite the following and made a massive name for herself, taking the stage alongside Duran Duran , Ke$ha , Major Lazer , and so many others on the biggest stages around the world.

Since releasing her debut album, Galore , in 2007, Dragonette has been all over the place between collaborations and releasing tracks of her own. After six years, she is back once again with her fifth studio album, Twennies . Partnering with renowned producer Dan Farber to bring this album to life, they capture a plethora of retro elements and modernize them to create this stunning body of work as Dragonette enters a new chapter in her life.

“seasick” begins the twennies journey with a jazzy drum intro before cascading synths fall over the bassline..

Dragonette’s well-known vocals begin in a flowing manner paired with the tempo and beat, emulating the movements of the sea. “ Hysteria ” follows with the strumming of the guitar and a static-like sound as a steady drum beat and vocals enter with a slower BPM. As this track picks up, male vocals back up her powerful voice, which echoes throughout the chorus. This song perfectly blends ’90s beats with modern house music, emphasizing the feeling of nostalgia, as it will continue throughout the album.

Bringing in acoustic drums with electronic synths, “ New Suit ” balances contemporary energy while still maintaining the sentiment of earlier times. This retro, upbeat track emphasizes the use of old-school synths, which takes you back to your youth and reminiscing on what is familiar to them while still holding onto what the new world has to offer. The title track, “ Twennies ,” starts with a darker tone, letting the initial bassline and raw vocals pique your interest. Though the somber tone continues, the speed picks up, bringing disco to the modern era as the lyrics remind us of earlier times. The raw drumline towards the end provides the ultimate rock n’ roll feeling leading into the final chorus, emphasizing the sound Dragonette has brought to the electronic music scene.

“T-Shirt” has a prominent bassline and swirling elements to create the scene of a late-night drive.

“ T-Shirt ” is an electro-pop track that creates a nostalgic soundscape with an 80s-style synth while still using modern electronic and rock music elements. Soon after, “ Winning ” slows down the album filling your ears with its acoustic guitar and heartfelt lyrics about doing better off without someone. The airy synths vibrate alongside the acoustic instruments, which evoke emotions when paired with her longing vocals. Maintaining the slow pace, “ Stormy ” focuses on Dragonette’s voice and a guitar accompaniment. Electronic elements, backup vocals, and the subtle sounds of nature add a dramatic element to this stunning ballad and emphasize the song’s title.

“ This is All You Get ” is s short yet sweet track features a touch of static vocals and is once again accompanied by an acoustic guitar. The pace slightly picks up with “ Good Intentions ,” and the lowered tone has a groovy feeling, emphasizing an eighties soundscape once again. With the tempo changes, Dragonette bridges the gap between musical nostalgia and utilizing modern elements of electronic music, which this song portrays spectacularly. The final track on the album, “ Outie ,” brings a beachy feeling to the album, using a ukelele and tambourine. This charming piece has relatable lyrics, quirky instrumentation, and a unique take on electronic music, making this the most elegant way to end Dragonette’s comeback album.

Off the heels of her long-awaited fifth studio album Twennies, electro-pop powerhouse Dragonette will be embarking on a North American tour in the spring of 2023. Twennies marks a full-circle moment for Dragonette as it seamlessly blends her influences and what she has learned along the way. As Dragonette gets ready to hit the road to share her music, she explains, “When I’m onstage it’s about how I sing and being able to share with an audience in real time and have an experience together.”

Dragonette Announces Select Spring Tour Dates In Support Of New Album Twennies

Electro-pop powerhouse artist Dragonette , aka songwriter/producer Martina Sorbara, has announced a run of select spring U.S. and Canadian tour dates in support of her acclaimed new full-length album Twennies – out now via BMG. The run of performances hit the Northeast and West Coast, kicking off March 22 in Philadelphia and wrapping April 8 in San Francisco.

Sorbara’s enthusiasm for getting back out on the road after a sold-out hometown performance in Toronto around the LP release is palpable, with her declaring,

“Guys! It’s been so long since I played a show in YOUR TOWN! I can’t tell you how excited I am to announce that I will be playing some live shows in a city near you in support of my new album TWENNIES. We worked so hard on this show, and I can’t wait to play for you live again. See you soon!”

On Twennies , Sorbara chose to work with one creative partner for the entire project—the Los Angeles-based producer Dan Farber (Dizzee Rascal, Lizzo). The two artists spent several weeks together holed up in Sorbara’s Toronto studio, where they wrote the majority of the record.

“I’ve never concentrated on working on an album like that; just living and breathing this one thing,” she shares.

Twennies marks a full-circle moment for Sorbara.

“It’s a true hybrid of my original influences as a child and what I’ve learned along the way. It feels so representative of my musical journey.” She adds, “It’s my favourite thing I’ve ever done. I’m so proud of it.”

Dragonette recently shared a remix of the title-track single, “ Twennies ,” by rising UK electronic artist Emily Nash.

With a career spanning over fifteen years, Dragonette has scored numerous global hits, including “Pick Up the Phone,” “Let it Go,” “Tokyo Nights” with Digital Farm Animals and Shaun Frank, “Outlines” with Mike Mago, “Slow Song” with The Knocks, and the chart-topping “Hello” with Martin Solveig, which garnered a JUNO Award win for ‘Dance Recording of the Year’ and returned to the Billboard Dance Charts just last year. Collaborating with the world’s biggest DJs, including Martin Garrix, Basement Jaxx, Kaskade, Galantis, and more, Dragonette’s musical diversity knows no bounds, and as a songwriter, her credits include Keith Urban, Cyndi Lauper, Pretty Sister, and Carly Rae Jepsen, among others.

Creative versatility shines across Dragonette’s four acclaimed studio albums, including Galore (2007), which earned Dragonette a JUNO nomination for ‘Breakthrough Group of the Year’, the JUNO-nominated Fixin To Thrill (2009), the JUNO-nominated Bodyparts (2012), and 2016’s Royal Blues. With global headlining credits too numerous to list, Dragonette has also supported the likes of Duran Duran, New Order, Ke$ha, and Miike Snow and amassed major festival credits, playing to thousands of fans at Coachella, Electric Daisy Carnival, Glastonbury, and Lollapalooza.
