While weather interrupted one day's plan, our agent suggested alternatives and we were able to enjoy the day. It was an exceptional trip for a reasonable price. Of course, we have to go back because 7 days isn't enough to truly see Iceland. Will use TourRadar again!!!

The tour was a once in a lifetime experience. Iceland itself was amazingly epic. The convenience of having the accommodations, car rental, and daily itinerary provided was the biggest upside. This was a great adventure. The trip is well organized and once we booked a tour the company was very responsive. There are so many places to see and explore each day, and it makes for long days with late arrivals at the hotels. All the hotels were very satisfactory. I had 2 concerns regarding the trip. 1) The beer spa. Our visit was scheduled for 2pm and there is no way that we could possibly been there by that time. It followed a long day of exploring the Snaefellsness Pennisula. It did not seem possible to cover that amount of area and still arrive back in time for the beer spa appointment. We had to skip this one. 2) Why was Hella selected as one of our hotel overnights? We had to cover so much ground and events in the first few days and then suddenly our daily driving time dropped significantly the last couple of days. What were we supposed to do near Hella?

They booked some amazing little hotels and Bed and Breakfasts that I'm not sure we ever would have known about if we had tried booking the same trip on our own. Day 1 - The Snaefellsnes Peninsula

On your first day, you will pick up your car and make the scenic journey toward the Snaefellsnes Peninsula. Colorful houses of Reykjavik, gorgeous Icelandic countryside, a stop at the old Akranes lighthouse – you are off to a great start.

The towns of Husafell and Reykholt are up next. The former is known for ice caving adventures you can book on location and the latter is an intellectual center of Iceland with top notch geothermal baths. In between the towns, your itinerary will guide you to two waterfalls with milky waters and introduce you to some fascinating folklore tales surrounding them. Last up, the most powerful geothermal hot spring in Europe will crown your first day on the road.

Day 2 - the snaefellsnes peninsula & west iceland.

You’ll start your day with a great breakfast, which will set the tone for an entire day of cascading waterfalls, imperious mountains and coal-black beaches. The first stop, Ytri Tunga, will treat you to wild beaches and friendly seals. Nearby you can discover two secluded villages and a large statue of a half-man half-troll, commonly found in Icelandic sagas.

As you pick your way along the jagged cliffs, you will soon find yourself at Londrangar, a craggy rock formation reminiscent of a castle. It looms over a black-pebble beach and an abandoned fishing area, both of which serve the atmosphere.

Your remaining drive along the coast features green meadows, mighty glaciers and the famous stratovolcano described in Jules Verne’s Journey to the Centre of the Earth . You’ll make your final stop at Kirkjufell mountain and waterfall as well as a few other attractions before you get to rest in a comfy bed.

Day 3 - hvalfjörður & the golden circle.

The hotel will treat you to a traditional Icelandic breakfast to kickstart your journey . You’ll pass the town of Borgarnes and visit the second-highest waterfall in Iceland before you begin the famous Golden Circle. Thingvellir National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site with otherworldly topography, is your first of the three Golden Circle stops.

The meeting place of the first Icelandic parliament and Mid-Atlantic Ridge are located there as well. To put things into perspective, you’ll see the origins of the world’s oldest continuously running democratic institution and two tectonic plates moving apart.

As you proceed along the route, you’ll visit a village famous for geothermal pools, the Secret Lagoon, and the iconic Geyser area, a phenomenon so stunning it gave birth to the English word geyser.

You’ll close the Golden Circle with the roaring Gullfoss Waterfall. If you make it there early, you can book a glacier snowmobiling tour on the Langjokull Glacier for an additional fee.

Which hotels will we be staying in? What category are they?

We use a very varied mix of local accommodations.

Comfort rooms   are private rooms with private bathroom in guesthouses, hotels, motels, lodges, etc. Approximately 3-star rating.

Budget rooms   are private rooms with shared bathroom at guesthouses, hostels, hotels, etc. Approximately 2-star rating.

Which type of vehicle do you recommend?

4WD vehicles are recommended during winter months (October – April) but it doesn’t need to be a jeep, it is safest to drive a vehicle that you are comfortable with so if you’re not used to driving large cars then a smaller, but 4WD, might be a better option. In summer any vehicle is good, depending on how many are traveling together, how much luggage you carry along and how much you’re willing to pay.

How much time will we spend in the car every day?

This depends on the itinerary, some are faster paced while others are more relaxed. Days can range from 200-400 km, though very few days exceed 350 km. Of course you are your own driver and guide while on a self drive tour so you are free to make detours as you wish.

What kind of insurance do I need?

It is always a good idea to make sure you have good travel insurance, as you never know what might happen while in a foreign country. Sure it costs a bit extra, but it can take a load off the mind and end up being totally worth it in case something should happen.

Take a look at what type of insurance is provided with your credit card, alternatively buy special travel insurance from an insurance provider.

As for the car rental, you can opt to buy extra insurance at the time of collecting the car. It may be wise to buy extra insurance such as windshield protection, as a cracked windshield from a stone being thrown off another car is among the most common incidents on Icelandic roads.

Other extra car insurances would be for example sand and ash protection, or additional insurance to lower the self-risk in case of an incident.

Can the itinerary be changed?

Our self drive adventures have been optimized for the best value experience, which includes doing some thrilling activities in the amazing Icelandic nature. As the packages are offered at the best possible price no partial refunds or modifications to the itinerary can be permitted. That includes opting out of an included activity and getting a refund for that activity. You can, of course, choose not to do the activity but as mentioned there would be no partial refunds of the package price.

What do I do when I have a problem while traveling?

You should contact the service provider in question: If there is a problem with the car, contact the car rental. If you have troubles finding the hotel (which shouldn’t happen as you will be provided with the address and GPS coordinates), you should call the hotel.

If you have questions about an activity, contact the activity provider. You will receive all the necessary contact information from us.

Can I add twin bed for my accommodation?

We cannot guarantee twin beds but a large majority of our hotels can accommodate twin bed arrangements and clients can contact the hotels directly after purchase to request a twin bed arrangement.

Your memorable Icelandic adventure begins the very moment you arrive at Keflavík Airport. After picking up your rental vehicle, you head for the capital for your first night in Iceland.

Day 2 – Borgarfjörður bay and Snæfellsnes peninsula

You start the day today by visiting the culturally and historically rich Borgarfjörður area. The landscape is made of vast fields and waterfalls which water seems to magically flow from the lava bed into the river below. Heading now to the Snæfellsnes peninsula many exciting visits await you along the way: from Gerðuberg an impressive wall of basalt column, Arnarstapi, Djúpalón and its pebble beach famous to Hellnar and many more on the way to your accommodation in the Snæfellsnes area.

Day 3 – Snæfellsnes and Breiðafjörður bay

Your day begins with a 3 hours ferry ride from Stykkishólmur across the Breiðfjörður bay to the reach the south coast of the Westfjords, where you visit Rauðisandur among others, a beautiful and unique beach where the reddish colour of the sand contrast with the landscape around. You head to Patreksfjörður at the end of the day where you spend the night.

Day 4 – Westfjords and Dynjandi waterfall

Today you continue up north along the Westfjords, one of the most remote regions of Iceland. The landscape is breathtaking as you cross mountains and heaths driving along the dramatic fjords at the foot of amazing cliffs. You stop along the way at the majestic Dynjandi waterfall that lies in the northern arm of the fjord Arnarfjörður. You continue your route towards the north until you reach the village of Flateyri and onwards to reach your accommodation near the Ísafjörður town.

Day 5 – The most remote place in Iceland: the Westfjords

Today your journey through the most remote places in Iceland continues. Next up is Strandir, the eastern part of the Westfjords.  You experience the spectacular landscape while driving along the numerous small fjords of Ísafjarðardjúp and passing Vigur island along the way.

Day 6 – North Iceland and Akureyri, the capital of the north

Your next day’s journey continues toward the northern part of Iceland, ending in the north’s capital Akureyri passing through Skagafjörður, known for exceptional horse breeding. You might see a lot of Icelandic horses along the way in the many farm lands during your drive.

Day 7 – Goðafoss waterfall and Lake Mývatn area

In the morning you can spend some time in Akureyri before heading towards the Lake Mývatn area. It is undoubtedly one of Iceland’s most renowned areas due to its volcanic activity and its amazing bird life. On the way to Mývatn, we recommend visiting the impressive Goðafoss waterfall known as “the waterfall of the gods”.

Day 8 – Dettifoss waterfall and Ásbyrgi canyon

Your day starts with a visit of the charming fishing village of Húsavík before driving along the coastline of the Tjörnes peninsula. You might like to make a quick stop on the way at the extremity of the peninsula to enjoy the view and spot some seabirds. The journey then continues to the eastern part of Iceland with a few stops on the way for your next evening’s stay.

Day 9 – Eastfjords

Today is the day to discover the Eastfjords. Start towards the fjord Reyðarfjörður where a small-but-fascinating World War II history museum is located, and continue along the fjords toward southeast Iceland. At times, the road hangs high on the mountain slopes offering spectacular view. Finally, you drive through the tunnel of Almannaskarð to arrive in the Höfn region where you will spend the night.

Day 10 – Skaftafell Nature Reserve, Jökulsárlón glacier lagoon, and waterfalls

Your next stop is Iceland’s scenic southeast. After passing various outlet glaciers belonging to Vatnajökull, which is Europe’s largest ice cap, you’ll arrive at the stunningly surreal beauty of Jökulsárlón, a glacial lagoon. This exceptional sight sits at the foot of Iceland’s highest mountain, Hvannadalshnúkur.

Skaftafell Nature Reserve is another area definitely worth a visit. This oasis surrounded by glaciers and black sand plains offers a broad range of options for great hiking. Continue through Kirkjubæjarklaustur village, the Eldhraun lava field and the Mýrdalssandur plain before you arrive in the Vík area.

Day 11 – Waterfalls and Golden Circle

Continue westbound to the south coast of Iceland and explore the Golden Circle, which takes you to the most popular tourist attractions in Iceland: Gullfoss, Geysir and Þingvellir National Park. On your way you will pass the magnificent waterfalls, Skógafoss and Seljalandsfoss.

Your day will end in Reykjavík where you will spend your last night in Iceland.

Day 12 – Departure

It seems as if your journey to fabulous Iceland only began a moment ago but now it is time to head back home driving back to Keflavík Airport for your flight. Depending on your flight’s time, you may be able to squeeze in a last day in Reykjavík to experience all the amazing things that the city has to offer.

How does an iceland self-drive trip work.

On a self-drive trip with Iceland Tours, you’ll be at the wheel of the rental car of your choice and free to go pretty much where you want, whenever you want.

We provide a detailed itinerary to help you plan your route and where you want to stop along the way. But it’s up to you whether you want to stick to it or go your own way. If you do take detours, make sure that you aren’t too far from your accommodation on any given night.

That said, it’s a good idea to stick to the suggested itinerary if you’ve never visited Iceland before. Created by our Reykjavík-based travel experts, it contains plenty of things for you to and see and do on each leg of your trip. One thing’s for sure: you won’t be short on ideas!

You also get unlimited in-car Wi-Fi, so you can stay connected and use maps on your phone for navigation.

Can I drive in Iceland and what kind of license do I need?

You have to be at least 20 years old to rent a car in Iceland, or 23 years old for larger vehicles like jeeps and vans. You’ll need to have held a valid driver’s license for at least 1 year and present a credit card when you collect your car.

You don’t need an International Driving Permit unless your license is not in Latin script (for example, Arabic or Chinese).

Can I customize this self-drive trip?

Yes! It’s possible to add extra activities or extend your trip with additional nights in Reykjavík or the countryside. Check the itinerary above to see what activities are available on what day.

When will I receive my travel documents?

Once you’ve paid your deposit for your trip, we’ll finalize bookings for your accommodation, rental car, and any activities. As soon as we receive confirmation of everything, we’ll email your travel documents to you.

We aim to finalize everything within a few weeks of receiving your booking request, but in busy periods this might take longer. That said, you’ll always receive all of your documents before your departure date.

When and where can I pick up my rental car?

You’ll be able to pick up your rental car at Keflavík International Airport from the arrivals hall. Before your trip, we’ll send you information about where to go in the terminal to collect your keys.

Make sure you have your driver’s license and credit card ready when you collect your vehicle.

If you land late at night, you can use the out-of-hours phone at the pick-up desk to contact someone who will be able to help you.

You also have the option to collect your rental car in Reykjavík, if you’re planning to spend some extra days in the city before your trip starts. If you’d like to do this, please let us know in the ‘Special requests’ box at checkout.

There isn’t really one particular best month to see the northern lights. That said, the best time of year for spotting the aurora borealis in Iceland’s skies is winter, from October to March.

Travelling in winter is key to seeing the northern lights in Iceland. This is because the nights are at their longest and darkest. As a result, the colours of the aurora borealis stand out more, compared to when the night skies are light in summer.

Whenever you visit between October and March, be prepared to stay up late to increase your chances of seeing the northern lights. The best time of day to see the aurora borealis tends to be from 11 PM to 2 AM.

For the most vibrant sightings, head out of town away from light pollution. This means that a self-guided road trip is a great way to travel in Iceland if you’d like to see the northern lights. 11. WHEN IS THE BEST TIME TO VISIT ICELAND?

The best time of year to visit Iceland depends on where you would like to go and what activities you plan on doing.

Iceland undergoes distinct seasonal changes, so you will have a different experience in summer, compared to visiting in winter. This simply means that there are more reasons to return to Iceland in the future!

In summer the temperature is milder and you’re likely to get better weather conditions. This is ideal for sight-seeing in Iceland’s more remote regions and for activities like glacier hiking.

So you only have five days to spend in Iceland? You’re worried you won’t get to see it all but you might be pleasantly surprised to know that Iceland’s best sights are easily reached within a few days by car. You’ll see the best of the Land of Fire and Ice on this incredible five-day Iceland itinerary through the heart of the country.

Walk in the footsteps of Vikings, stand at the base of mighty waterfalls, and soak away the road trip in the Blue Lagoon’s thermal spa. The best part about this itinerary? All these destinations are completely free and able to access regardless of what time of year you visit Iceland! This is the best five-day Iceland itinerary for a self-drive tour of this magical country.

Iceland 5 Day Itinerary route Map

Day 1: Arrival + (Blue Lagoon) + Reykjavik

Congratulations on your decision to visit Iceland! It’s your first day in this incredible land of lava fields and stunning vistas. Get ready to be amazed at the plethora of diverse landscapes and stunning vistas as you road trip your way through the country’s vast wilderness. The first order of business is picking up your rental car with Firefly Car Rental at the Keflavik (KEF) airport.

If you have the time, now would be a great opportunity to kick off your trip with a bit of relaxation after the long flight. Pop in to the famed Blue Lagoon, only a 20 minute drive from the airport, and be transported to a world of peace, mist, and healing waters. If you would like to try something lesser known, the Secret Lagoon located inside Reykjavik city will be an excellent hot spring alternatives for day 1.

If you’re eager to make it to Reykjavik you can always save the Blue Lagoon for right before your flight home! Stay in the capital city of Reykjavik tonight. Dine on fresh seafood, take a stroll around downtown , check out the most famous free tourists attractions like sun voyager sculpture, Hallgrimskirkja church and Harpa, or get acquainted with the locals at one of their energetic live music events.

Day 2 : Golden Circle

It’s day two of your five day road trip through Iceland and time to jump right into the heart of this island nation’s sprawling wilderness and inspiring natural wonders. The Golden Circle is a 190-mile loop and one of the best “mini road trips” in Iceland. the golden circle tour is also one of the most popular day trips and must see for those who only have a day exploring the country.

First up is Thingvellir National Park, just under an hour from Reykjavik. Walk between tectonic plates, discover Viking heritage, or go for a hike in this UNESCO World Heritage Site. Keep in mind that the national park does charge for parking , ranging from $5.50 to $7.70 depending on car size. Don’t forget to pay before exploring!

Not far from Þingvellir National Park is the legendary Geysir Geothermal Area . If the name sounds familiar, all other geysers in the world were named for this one. While Geysir itself is well known, the most impressive sight in this geothermal mecca is Strokkur, a geyser that soars 131 feet (40 meters) into the air, every 5 to 10 minutes.

As if that wasn’t magnificent enough, end the day with a visit to Gullfoss Waterfall, one of Iceland’s largest and only 10 minutes from Geysir. It’s impressive both in summer and winter, when most of the waterfall is frozen. Head over to the Visitor’s Center to try one of Iceland’s culinary delights, lamb stew.

Day 3: Waterfalls + Black Sand Beach + Vik

Where there’s volcanoes, there’s black sand, and you’re headed there today! Day three of your road trip is all about immersing yourself in the stark beauty of Iceland’s famous black sand beaches.

Begin your journey by driving south, where the roads wind through landscapes of jagged lava fields, leading you towards the southern coast. Here, you’ll encounter two of the  most beautiful waterfalls in Iceland , Seljalandsfoss and Skógafoss, nestled only 30 minutes apart. As you approach them, you’ll hear the roar of the cascades echoing in the air, their mist painting rainbows in the sunlight. While both waterfalls are a sight to behold, each has its unique charm. Seljalandsfoss offers a rare chance to walk behind the waterfall curtain, while Skógafoss is known for its sheer power and broad curtain of water.

Continuing along the coast, your next destination is the dramatic Dyrhólaey arch. This enormous natural arch, sculpted by the relentless power of the Atlantic Ocean, juts out into the ocean, presenting a perfect opportunity for stunning photographs. The real star of the show today though? Reynisfjara, the iconic black sand beach, situated near the town of Vik.

Vik, with its quaint streets and small-town charm, serves as the gateway to Reynisfjara. After wandering around Vik’s quaint streets, make your way to Reynisfjara Beach itself but beware; the waves here are notoriously dangerous. Known as “sneaker waves” they have been known to drown unsuspecting visitors. After seeing the tumultuous ocean up close, head back to Vik for Black Crust Pizza, a slice as midnight as the sand.

Note that the Seljalandsfoss Waterfall does have a parking fee of around $5.Furthermore, if your spirit of adventure is still high, you can also consider booking a guided tour of the Sólheimajökull Glacier. Located near the start of today’s itinerary, it offers an exciting glimpse into Iceland’s glacial landscapes and the chance to tread on an actual glacier, a thrilling end to an already fantastic day.

Day 4: Skaftafell + Jökulsárlón glacier lagoon + Diamond Black Sand Beach + Heading back to Reykjavik

Kick off your last full day on the road with a visit to the gorgeous Skaftafell Nature Reserve, a portion of Vatnajökull National Park. Home to the largest glacier in Iceland, for which the park was named, and itself residing within the largest national park in all of Europe, this section of Iceland’s wilderness is unparalleled in its rugged beauty.

Explore the Skaftafell Glacier through a guided tour or the glacier blue ice caves if you are visiting during winter then, continue chasing waterfalls at Svartifoss, or take a short hike through the tundra. The park is also home to the famous Jökulsarlon ice lagoon and the stunning Diamond Beach, littered with glittering shards of the glacier itself. Keep your eyes peeled for the Local Langoustine food truck that parks nearby!

This evening, head back to Iceland’s capital, Reykjavik, for the night. It’s almost a five hour drive back and you’ll want to get started well before nightfall.

Quick tips if you are planning a trip to Iceland during winter months: You will also have a chance to see the northern lights if you are visiting the country during Iceland’s northern light season (between September and April), Day 3 and 4 of this itinerary will offer you the best chance to see the northern light — as you will be staying in the area far from light pollution. If the weather condition is good for the time you are visiting, don’t forget to watch out for the aurora!

Day 5: Departure Day (+Blue Lagoon)

It’s your final day of this epic five-day road trip through Iceland! Spend some time back in the capital of Reykjavik and check off any of the landmarks you missed the first time or foods you’re still wanting to try. Don’t forget to grab a traditional Icelandic sweater as a souvenir.

Before heading back to the airport, this is another great time to reflect on your trip with a rejuvenating experience at the Blue Lagoon. Plan in advance as the Blue Lagoon is 45 minutes away from downtown Reykjavik and 20 minutes from the Keflavik Airport.

○     Read up on the rules of the road before arriving in Iceland. Know that you must stick to designated roads at all times. Do I need a 4x4 rental car in Iceland?

All the rental cars we provide in our luxury self drive tours are 4×4 since this is the safest and most comfortable choice for travelling in Iceland.

How are the Weather Conditions?

The weather in Iceland can change very quickly so it’s important for your to stay up to date on the weather conditions, especially during the winter months. Weather conditions can be checked out on the  Icelandic Meteorological Office website , which is the most accurate weather forecast available. The website’s different maps display temperature, wind speed, precipitation, and even avalanche forecasts. When driving in Iceland a pair of good sunglasses are a must!

How long does it take to drive around Iceland?

The Ring Road or Route 1 goes all the way around Iceland, about 1332 KM and it would take you between 12-14 hours without any stops.. We don’t recommend that! For you to be able to enjoy and experience the stops and places along the way we would recommend taking 6 – 10 days to go all the way around Iceland.

International Driving License?

To drive in Iceland you do not need an international driver’s license unless your domestic license may be hard to understand in Iceland. If your license is written in simplified Chinese, Arabic or any other non-roman alphabet, then you will need to procure either an English version or an International license.

Is it difficult to drive in Iceland?

All the major roadways including the Ring Road are paved and accessible all year around. Make sure you only drive on paved roads, that way you shouldn’t have any problems.

What are the laws & regulations?

The standard speed limits in Iceland are:

• 30-50 km/hour within cities and other populated areas
• 80 km/hour on gravel roads in rural areas
• 90 km/hour on paved roads.

In Iceland the cars are driven on the right side of the road and like in most European countries. You should never drink and drive and make sure you always have your seat belts on. If you need to use the cell phone during driving make sure it’s connected to a hands-free device. The main headlights must be kept on at all times, even during daylight hours. Off-road driving is strictly forbidden as it destroys the environment and natural landscape and can result in a fine up to 5,000 USD. Never park or drive in the middle of the road, always find a safe parking spot or area if you need to stop to enjoy the Icelandic Landscape or Northern Lights.

The short answer is that the Golden Circle is a scenic route between three beautiful natural attractions in Iceland. The main Golden Circle attractions include:

• Thingvellir National Park
• Geysir geothermal area
• Gullfoss waterfall

Instead of driving back and forth from Reykjavik the same way, people typically drive a short circle that's just under 140 miles (230 kilometers) in length.

The Golden Circle shouldn't be confused with the Ring Road , an 828-mile (1,332-kilometer) drive encompassing the entire island of Iceland. The latter can take several days to a week to complete.

There are hundreds of different Golden Circle tours to choose from, but if you'd rather drive this route yourself, then read on for tips on how to do it.

Self-driving the Golden Circle is a great way to see everything at your own pace. First, you'll need to find a rental car . You'll want to rent a four-wheel drive, jeep, or SUV if you plan on visiting during winter. 

A four-wheel drive is important to your safety on the road when there's heavy snow on the ground. However, the Golden Circle is the most popular route in the country, so if you were to find yourself stuck in a pile of snow, help wouldn't be far off.

In the summer, you might want to consider a camping car rental (a car with a tent on its roof) and spend a night at the campsite in Thingvellir National Park.

Top Self Drive Tours in Iceland

One of the benefits of driving the Golden Circle yourself is that you choose when to begin and how long you'll stay at each attraction. Since the Golden Circle is the most popular attraction in Iceland, hundreds of different tours go there every day. You'll be spoiled for choice when it comes to picking the best Golden Circle sights. 

With the flexibility of having your own car, you can choose exactly how long you spend exploring these attractions and which route to take. There are many possibilities.

If you want to rest, you can do the circle in the afternoon or evening. During the summer, nights don't get dark, so you could even go at night and visit the attractions under the midnight sun .

Driving the 140 miles (230 kilometers) of the Golden Circle can take as little as three hours if you take the shortest route. So, you could do the whole circle in about five hours with stops, but most people prefer to spend a few days to a week to self-drive the Golden Circle. (Check out our Golden Circle map below.) 

To beat the crowds, get up at the crack of dawn and leave early so you can spend the full day exploring at a relaxed pace. Perhaps you'd like to visit these attractions like the locals, and then spend a night or two in the area. 

Thingvellir National Park has a great campsite and a modern and stylish hotel. The Geysir geothermal area also has a luxurious hotel and a campsite.

By Gullfoss , you can find another hotel and multiple summer cabins along the way that you can rent for a more private experience. Nothing beats being in the clean and quiet countryside while sitting in a private hot tub on the deck of a cabin.

You could also decide to add a hike to the warm river in Reykjadalur to your Golden Circle route, and then choose to stay at a lovely hotel in the village Hveragerdi or its beautiful campsite .

The Golden Circle route is extremely popular, and there are hundreds of ways to explore it. If you're looking for a good place to start, here are five of the most popular routes. 

5. 10 Hour Golden Circle ​Tour with Snowmobiling on Langjokull

This tour has all of the best Golden Circle attractions for travelers on a budget and looking for adventure. It includes a visit to the Langjokull Glacier - the second-largest glacier in Iceland - and an excellent spot for a snowmobile trip!

4. Three-Day Northern Lights Tour of Iceland's Golden Circle & South Coast with Ice Caving & Glacier Hiking

For travelers with more time to explore, a three-day tour will ensure you see all of the best Golden Circle stops. You'll also have the opportunity to do two of Iceland's most popular activities - exploring ice caves and taking a hike across glaciers.

A four-day tour is an ideal option if you have time and want to enjoy everything the Golden Circle has to offer. Stops include the famous Blue Lagoon, geysers, Iceland's black sand beaches, towering waterfalls, and, if the stars align, the northern lights! 

If you're driving the Golden Circle, you're more likely to avoid crowds and thereby enjoy greater privacy along the way. Most Golden Circle tours leave in the morning from Reykjavik , between 8 a.m. to 10 a.m., with afternoon departures around noon and 2 p.m. Most of them are back in Reykjavik by 8 p.m. There are select midnight sun tours available in the summer.

The busiest times at the Golden Circle's major attractions of Thingvellir, Gullfoss, and Geysir are between 9 a.m. and 7 p.m., although from October to February the long daylight hours in Iceland allow for longer viewing hours.

If you leave early in summer (or spend the night in the area), you can see the attractions in broad daylight before 9 a.m. or after 7 p.m. These are perfect times to capture sunrise and sunset photos in the spring or fall or admire the northern lights during wintertime.

Top Northern Lights Tours & Holidays

If you spend a night at one of the hotels or campsites in the summer, the midnight sun allows you to enjoy the area's natural attractions without too many other tourists around.

As we've mentioned, there are three main attractions on every Golden Circle itinerary. Let's look at each one more closely before sharing ways for you to go off the beaten path when visiting them.

The first stop on the Golden Circle is Thingvellir National Park, Iceland's first national park and the only one recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site . It's 29 miles (47 kilometers) northeast of Reykjavik.

The North American and Eurasian tectonic plates meet and form a rift valley here. Within the park, it's possible to take turns standing on the North American and Eurasian continents. Movement between the plates is ongoing, resulting in earthquakes that separate the plates by about two inches per year. 

As a result of this ongoing activity, a fissure, Silfra , opened in the ground in 1789. It has since filled with purified glacial meltwater and has become a popular snorkeling and diving destination.

The second significant stop on Iceland's Golden Circle is the Geysir geothermal area, about 38 miles (61 kilometers) east of Thingvellir National Park on Route 37. This area of geothermal activity is named after the 59-foot-wide (18-meter-wide) Geysir, whose activity dates back to at least 1294, when an earthquake hit the region.

Today, Geysir, derived from the Icelandic word meaning "to erupt," is rarely active. However, you can still see where it used to spout off, as well as other, more active geysers in the area. 

Strokkur is a geyser that became active following an earthquake in 1789. It erupts about every eight minutes, shooting a water column 82 to 115 feet (25 to 35 meters) into the air.

Six miles (10 kilometers) east of the Geysir geothermal area on Route 35 will bring you to the spectacular Gullfoss Waterfall . This is the third major stop on the Golden Circle in Iceland. 

If you only see one waterfall in Iceland, make it Gullfoss. This natural wonder is fed by glacial waters from the Hvita River, which flow over the two stages of the falls at about 459 cubic feet (140 cubic meters) per second in the summer, and 358 cubic feet (109 cubic meters) in the winter.

The first stage of the waterfall is about 36 feet (11 meters), and it's followed by a second, more significant waterfall with a drop of 69 feet (21 meters). Thanks to the amount of mist kicked up by Gullfoss, rainbows frequently appear at the falls. 

Gullfoss Waterfall is open year-round, but the path to the lower level observation area is closed in winter due to icy conditions. 

Beyond the three main attractions, you can also visit other points of interest along the Golden Circle, such as: 

• Reykjadalur's hot river
• The Secret Lagoon
• Nesjavellir geothermal plant
• Kerid volcanic crater

It's always a joy to explore new corners of Thingvellir National Park. No matter how many times you visit, it's possible to see something new.

There's so much more to Thingvellir than just Almannagja , Peningagja (the Money Rift), Silfra, and Oxararfoss . 

Autumn is a favorite season to explore the park when the low shrubs covering the area turn multi-colored. The ground's red, yellow, and green colors contrast nicely with a fresh snow layer.

Tours will give you ample time at each location to see the main sights, but with your own car, you can choose to go for a short hike within the national park or perhaps bring a picnic and settle down in some mossy clearing with a view over the lake. 

Most people go to the same paths in only one section of the park, next to the information center. But the park is much larger and encompasses the entire lake of Thingvellir, which would take about an hour to drive around, or a one- to two-day hike (it's about 37 miles or 60 kilometers, but the route is almost flat).

When driving yourself, there are many options for where to eat. If you're a foodie, then you might want to stop at some of the great dining locations along the way and skip the overpriced sandwiches and road burgers commonly found in gas stations.

Some of the interesting options include the Frioheimar greenhouse for tomato soup with homemade bread and cucumber salsa. All the tomatoes and cucumbers are grown on the premises.

The Ethiopian restaurant Minilik in Fludir is also a fun find in the middle of the Icelandic countryside. It's an excellent example of how international cuisine has reached more remote areas of Iceland.

If you head to Solheimar Eco Village , you can get homemade cakes and delicious coffee at Graena Kannan cafe . 

Or, if you want to find local art or do some yoga, check out the ceramic studio and cafe Bragginn Clay & Coffee , an 8-mile (13-kilometer) drive from Fludir. They're only open during summertime. On weekends they offer yoga classes, and on Thursdays, they have Irish coffee evenings.

The traditional Icelandic meat soup served in Gullfoss cafe is also delicious, and they'll give you a free refill. There's also the ice-cream barn Efstidalur that's not to be missed.

Some hotels along the way have fine dining restaurants, such as the Geysir Hotel  and the  Silfra restaurant in the Ion Hotel.

If you make an extended Golden Circle trip, you could drive to Stokkseyri and enjoy some fine langoustine at Fjorubordid or go to Rauda Husid in Eyrarbakki.

Above is an alternative one-day drive of the Golden Circle, as a local might do it. This suggestion is mainly for spring, summer, and autumn when the weather is pleasant and the days are long. 

If you want to make this a two-day trip, we suggest camping in Thingvellir National Park. Although, of course, you can also choose to spend the night in a hotel somewhere along the way.

First, have breakfast at a  restaurant in Reykjavik and grab some snacks for the road. Our suggestion is to try Braud & Co for some fresh sourdough bread or a couple of cinnamon buns. 

If you plan on making this a two-day trip, then also buy some food for breakfast the next day, or get something to put on a barbeque for the evening (if you like - you can also decide to do that later on in the trip). Grab a tent ( or rent a tent ) and leave Reykjavik around 9 a.m.

Head towards Hveragerdi, but turn left onto Route 431, which turns into Route 435. Parts of this road are gravel, so take your time and go slowly. 

The route is beautiful, and you likely won't meet many others on the way. When you get to Nesjavellir Geothermal Plant , you might want to check out their geothermal exhibition.

Continue along Route 360, a stunning gravel road that goes through the less-visited Grafningur area of Thingvellir. The road is winding with plenty of cute picnic clearings and great views of the lake. It's an excellent area to park your car at the side of the road to take some pictures or breathe in the fresh countryside air.

There are a lot of summer cabins in this area. If you are driving in autumn (late August or even early September), you can also look for wild berries to pick.

At the end of Route 360, there's another geothermal power station, Ljosafossstod , that has a free, fun, interactive exhibition daily; it's worth checking out for half an hour or so.

Then head towards Skalholt on Road 36 and then 35. On the way, make a stop by the crater Kerid, which takes about half an hour to walk around. 

You can also stop by Skalholt if you like and visit its historical church and learn about this important location in Iceland's history.

When it's time for lunch, stop at either Bragginn, Fridheimar , Kaffi Klettur, or Minilik for a delicious meal. 

After lunch, head to the Secret Lagoon in Fludir and relax for a couple of hours in hot water while checking out the small hot springs by the pool. Aim to be at the Secret Lagoon before 2 p.m. at the latest for privacy's sake, as large tour groups arrive between 3 p.m. to 5 p.m.

Following a soak in the Secret Lagoon, head towards Gullfoss waterfall. It would be best to arrive in the afternoon as most tour groups will have left the area.

After admiring the powerful waterfall and walking down the hiking path to its rim, it's time to head towards Geysir, which should also be relatively quiet in the late afternoon/early evening. If you've become hungry for dinner, you could check out the menu at Hotel Geysir.

For dessert (or an appetizer in case you'll have dinner later), We suggest trying locally made ice cream in Efstidalur . If you only want this to be a one-day trip, then head to Thingvellir and go for a stroll there in the evening sun before making your way back to Reykjavik.

If, on the other hand, you want to camp for the night and you haven't had dinner yet, then shop for charcoal and something to put on a barbeque in the small village of Laugarvatn . The Icelandic lamb is highly recommended. 

Continue to the campsite of Thingvellir National Park (where there are barbeques available), pitch your tent, and prepare your feast.

After dinner, go for a stroll in the evening and listen to the local birds singing. The above picture was taken around midnight in June to give you an idea of how bright it's throughout the night.

The next day, you can get up early and enjoy the quiet morning before most people arrive or sleep in and go for an extended walk around the area in the afternoon. You could be back in Reykjavik in the early afternoon (from Thingvellir, it's only about a 29-mile or 47-kilometers drive to Reykjavik) or spend the whole day exploring Thingvellir National Park.

If you are looking for more activity, you could book a snorkeling tour in Silfra by Thingvellir or a horseback riding tour on the outskirts of Reykjavik and get back to the city in the late afternoon or early evening.
