SIQUIJOR TOURIST SPOTS – OVERVIEW

Let’s start this guide with all the essentials you should know about Siquijor, such as the island’s location, getting there, and more.

WHERE IS SIQUIJOR ISLAND?

Siquijor Island is located in the Central Visayas region of the Philippines.

It’s very close to the neighboring islands of Cebu, Bohol, and Dumaguete which can be easily reached by plane or ferry.

HOW TO GET TO SIQUIJOR?

There are two ways to get here, one is by plane and the other by ferry.

There are weekly flights to Siquijor connecting domestic travelers coming from Manila, Cebu, and Dumaguete.

Dumaguete to Siquijor ferry

One of the most common routes is the ferry from Dumaguete to Siquijor which takes approximately 1.5 hours and the cost is around 500-600 pesos depending on the star rating of the ferry. There is also an additional 20 pesos terminal fee.

Daily ferries are departing from Dumaguete Port in Negros Oriental and arriving at Larena Port in Siquijor.

Cebu to Siquijor ferry

If you happen to be in the very south of Cebu and heading to Siquijor from here, there is only one ferry departure per day leaving from Liloan Port in Cebu at 10 am, bound for Larena Port in Siquijor. The ferry from Cebu to Siquijor takes approximately 1-2 hours and the cost is around 200 pesos.

You can purchase your tickets at the Liloan Port at least one hour before departure.

Bohol to Siquijor ferry

The ferry from Bohol to Siquijor is another common route for travelers and this is the exact route that I took. The cost for this journey is around 900 pesos plus an additional 20 pesos terminal fee.

Daily ferries are departing from Tagbilaran Port in Bohol around 10 am and it takes approximately 2 hours to reach Larena Port in Siquijor.

How to get around the tourist spots in siquijor.

There are a couple of options for getting around the island and enjoyin g Siquijor what to do, and they are by scooter, habal habal, tricycle, or Jeepney.

You can rent a scooter for as little as 250 pesos per day and make your own way around the island at your own pace.

When you arrive on the island by ferry, you’ll find that there are half a dozen scooter rental stores located at the Larena ferry terminal which is super convenient. You can pick up a set of wheels for the time you plan to spend on the island.

If you are not confident driving a scooter, the other option is to hail down a Jeepney, tricycle, or habal habal (motorbike taxi) along the main road in Larena and get a ride to San Juan, the main tourist hub on the island.

The cost depends on how good your bartering skills are, though for a 40-minute drive from Larena to San Juan in a Jeepney should be around 100 pesos, in a tricycle 500 pesos, and habal-habal 350 pesos.

BEST TIME TO VISIT SIQUIJOR?

The best time to visit Siquijor, weather-wise, is between April and July when temperatures are hot and there is barely any rainfall. This is also high season, so expect to see many tourists during these months.

I recommend visiting the tourist spots in Siquijor on the shoulder months of the high season between November and March which sees a bit of rainfall but usually only lasts for a couple of hours and the rest of the day is sunny.

Try to avoid the typhoon season which is between August and October.

15 BEST TOURIST SPOTS IN SIQUIJOR

Now that you’ve got all the information on how to get here, where to stay, the best time to visit, and all the logistics, let’s get to the fun stuff!

So without further ado, here is the ultimate guide to the 15 Best Siquijor Tourist Spots!

PALITON BEACH

The first thing that should be on the top of your list of things to do is to hit the beach! Paliton Beach is rated as one of the best beaches in Siquijor for its glistening white sands and palm tree-fringed shoreline.

This is one tourist spot in Siquijor you do not want to miss!

Paliton Beach is located in the main tourist area of San Juan. Most accommodations are dotted along the main road in San Juan so no doubt Paliton Beach will be within walking distance from your hotel.

Paliton Beach faces west making it the perfect spot to watch the sunset on the sand with your mates!

There are a few oceanside cafes and beach bars dotted along Paliton Beach serving up cold brews and delicious meals. Most usually have happy hour between 4 pm and 6 pm, so make sure to get there around this time if you want to score some cheap drinks.

If you visit Paliton Beach during the day it’s just as good. You can find several tree swings tied to bent palms that you can have a turn on and swing out over the water’s edge!

Apart from that, there isn’t a whole lot more to do on Paliton Beach other than going swimming in the ocean, laying in a hammock underneath the coconut palms, or reading a book by the beach.

Paliton Beach really is the best beach on the island and I highly recommend adding this epic spot to your itinerary.

Siquijor Island Tours and Packages

The best way to visit is to join a Tour To Siquijor From Dumaguete !

It includes accommodation for 2 nights, breakfast, hotel transfers, and a fun guide to spend the trip with!

CAMBUGAHAY FALLS

Cambugahay Falls is arguably the best waterfall on the island! Cambugahay Falls is most famous for its tiered levels and freshwater cascades that are surrounded by lush rainforest which is why it’s one of the most popular tourist spots in Siquijor!

Cambugahay Falls is located in Lazi which is approximately a 30-minute drive from San Juan to reach the falls and the entrance fee is 20 pesos. You may also have to pay a donation fee for parking.

From the jump-off point, it takes around 5 minutes to walk down a set of concrete steps to reach the first level of Cambugahay Falls. This epic location features a large natural swimming hole and some man-made structures including rope swings, bamboo rafts, and a wide set of falls.

Unfortunately, when I visited Cambugahay Falls the water was brown, and not that inviting due to heavy rains the night before. I was a little disappointed when I didn’t get to experience the true beauty of these falls, but hey, that’s just Mother Nature.

Besides the bottom swimming hole, there are a few more levels of Cambugahay Falls to explore.

Follow the trail upstream and across the bamboo bridges where you will find more freshwater swimming holes, flowing rock pools, and several cliff jumping spots.

SALAGDOONG BEACH & CLIFF JUMP

Wondering what to do in Siquijor? Salagdoong Beach is hands down one of the best beaches on the island which is most popular for snorkeling around the colorful reefs, relaxing on the secluded beaches, and epic cliff jumping!

I highly recommend adding Salagdoong Beach to your list of best things to do in Siquijor!

Salagdoong Beach is attached to Salagdoong Beach Resort on the far east corner of the island in the town of Maria.

From San Juan, it’s approximately a 50-minute drive to reach Salagdoong Beach and the entrance fee is 50 pesos per person plus an additional 20 pesos for parking.

Salagdoong Beach boasts two beautiful coves lined with coconut palms and white sand shorelines. Just off the shore is a colorful reef that is great for snorkeling and swimming.

I would have to say the slippery slide and cliff jumping at Salagdoong Beach is the main attraction and one for thrill-seekers! Make sure you visit during high tide to do these activities.

There are two diving boards here, one is around 5 meters and the other is 10 meters. Jumping from the top of the cliff into the turquoise waters below is one of the most adrenaline-fuelled activities to do during your visit.

CENTURY-OLD BALETE TREE

The century-old Balete Tree is one of the most visited tourist spots on the island and it’s easy to see why!

This Siquijor tourist spot is located in Lazi on the south coast of Siquijor Island Philippines. From San Juan, it’s approximately a 20-minute drive and the entrance fee is only 10 pesos.

The 400-year-old Enchanted Balete Tree has a very mystical and spiritual background. It’s a place that local shamans use for sacred rituals. However, I didn’t see any witchcraft when I visited.

At the base of the Century Old Balete Tree is a small freshwater pond filled with fish that will nibble the dead skin off the soles of your feet if you dip them in.

Enjoy your fish foot spa while marveling at the thick canopy and huge vines that hang from the Old Enchanted Balete Tree.

Next to the Century Old Tree is a two-story restaurant where you can grab a meal with drinks and also a souvenir store selling all sorts of gifts. All in all, it’s one of the best places where to go in Siquijor!

LUGNASON FALLS

Lugnason Falls, also known as Zodiac Falls, is up there with one of the  top waterfalls in Siquijor that I highly recommend adding to your itinerary!

Lugnason Falls is located in the main tourist area of San Juan, From Paliton Beach, it’s approximately a 15-minute drive inland from the coast. The entrance is free though you may be asked to pay a small parking fee of 10 pesos.

From the jump-off point, it takes around 15 minutes to walk along a dirt trail through the forest to reach Lugnason Falls.

Lugnason Falls features a 5-meter waterfall and a large spring filled with blue Gatorade-colored water. It’s an adventurer’s playground and reminded me of the blue-ass water that I found at Kawasan Falls in Cebu .

Lugnason Falls is a great spot to hang out and go swimming under the falls to cool off. For thrill-seekers, jumping from the top of the falls into the catch basin below is a lot of fun too!

Don’t end the adventure here as there are more unique spots to be found in the same valley as Lugnason Falls. Follow the jungle trail downstream where you will find man-made aqua ducts and an epic cold spring perfect for swimming!

Can you think of better things to do Siquijor?!

The BEST Hotel in Siquijor

Need a place to stay? Aloha Seaside Resort is conveniently located in Siquijor.

Whether you’re here to explore around or relax in comfort, Aloha Seaside Resort is an excellent option!

VISIT THE LAZI CHURCH

Lazi Church, also known as San Isidro Labrador Parish Church, is the island’s oldest, largest, and most significant Roman Catholic Church.

San Isidro Labrador Parish Church is located in Lazi on the island’s south coast. From San Juan, it’s approximately a 20-minute drive

The construction of Lazi Church was completed in 1884 and was built mainly with stone and hardwood. The bell tower attached to one side of the church was built one year later, the most dominant feature on the outside.

Next to the church, you can also find a silent convent that acts as a museum that holds many old artifacts and antiques. The entrance fee at the museum is around 20 pesos.

Lazi Church also plays home to large masses and it’s possible to take a tour inside of this century-old church with a priest.

QUISOL MOUNTAIN VIEW

Quisol Mountain View boasts one of the best panoramic viewpoints which overlooks the island and its pristine coastlines! This epic viewpoint is an off-the-beaten-path adventure that is easy to find and far away from the crowds that you will find at other Siquijor tourist spots.

Quisol Mountain View is located at the top of the hill between Lazi and Larena. It is approximately a 40-minute drive from San Juan to Quisol Mountain View.

Here is the exact location on Google Maps.

There is no official parking lot or tourist desk at this location, so you will have to park your scooter on the side of the road and find the entry point which isn’t too hard to find.

You will see a large sign with the words ‘Quisol Mountain View’ written on it and make-shift stairs cut into the land leading up to the viewpoint. See the image below for reference.

It takes around 5 minutes to walk to the top of the mountain and you’ll be rewarded with extensive views of the island.

Unfortunately, it was a bit cloudy on the day I visited, but on a nice clear day, you will be able to see the neighboring islands of Cebu, Negros, and Bohol.

Get off the typical tourist trail and add the Quisol Mountain View to your list of things to do in Siquijor!

LAGAAN FALLS

Lagaan Falls is one of the best waterfalls on the island and a must-visit. Swimming holes, rope swings, rock jumps, and small caves are just some of the things you can expect to find at this epic Siquijor tourist spot!

Lagaan Falls is located in Lazi on the south coast of the island. From the main tourist area of San Juan, it’s approximately a 30-minute drive to reach Lagaan Falls.

The Lagaan Falls entrance fee is 50 pesos and parking is free. At the entrance, local guides will offer to take you down to the falls but this is not necessary as the trail is clearly marked.

However, I visited these falls on my own and decided to take a guide for good company and tipped him 100 pesos at the end.

It takes around 15 minutes to walk along a dirt trail underneath a dense rainforest canopy to reach t he first level of this waterfall.

Some of the features you will find here are a large swimming hole, rope swings, small caves, rock jumps, and a wide set of falls.

Don’t forget to follow the jungle trail upstream where you will find small freshwater rock pools and natural jacuzzis. You could easily spend a few hours here jumping from pool to pool, swinging from the tree swings, and not getting bored.

The lush jungle surrounding Lagaan Falls makes this place so tranquil, and I highly recommend adding this spot to your list of things to see in Siquijor.

MAN-MADE FOREST SIQUIJOR

The Man-Made Forest is similar to the Bilar Man-Made Forest in Bohol , though on a smaller scale. A visit to this tourist spot is worthy of a quick stop for a photo during your adventures around the island.

The man-made forest can be found in Maria on the southeastern corner of the island. From San Juan, it is approximately a 45-minute drive.

This enchanting stretch of road is around 2 km long and lined with beautiful mahogany trees between the towns of Minalulan and Liloan.

When you enter this parallel tunnel of trees, you’ll feel like you’ve just entered another realm. You will also notice the temperature drop drastically as you drive through the man-made forest because the canopy above almost completely cuts out the sun.

I recommend stopping by the man-made forest on your way to Salagdoong Beach, another of the places to visit in Siquijor.

man made forest siquijor

TALISAY BEACH

Talisay Beach is not as crowded and popular as Paliton Beach, which is why you should definitely find the time to visit this underrated destination.

Talisay Beach can be found between Lazi and Maria, which is also in the same direction as Salagdoong Beach.

There is no official entry point for Talisay Beach, you can park your scooter on the side of the road and follow one of the dirt trails down to the shoreline.

MUST READ: BEST TRAVEL ACCESSORIES FOR ANY TRIP

Emerging out of the jungle trail, you’ll step foot onto a white sand and coral cove that is stunning, to say the least.

Talisay Beach is best visited on high tide when the water comes right up to the palm-fringed shoreline, making it easier to go for a swim. At low tide, you will have to walk across the rocky reef to find deeper water for a refreshing dip.

Talisay Beach is also a renowned spot for snorkeling, so make sure to bring a mask and snorkel set with you down to the beach.

DAY TRIP TO APO ISLAND

Apo Island is a volcanic island located 30km off Siquijor’s southern coastline. Notorious for its dive sites and snorkeling, an Apo Island day trip is one of the top-rated things to do!

To book an Apo Island Tour you can pop into one of the many dive shops and resorts located along Paliton Beach in San Juan and organize your trip through them at least one day in advance.

A barbecue lunch and cold refreshments are usually included with the Apo Island tour.

Apo Island has been the longest-lasting community-led marine protected area in the Philippines since 1986.

Apo Island is so aesthetically pleasing to the eyes that you won’t want to close them! We anchored up the boat on the outer edge of the reef near the main beach port of Apo Island.

Shortly after anchoring, we all jumped off the side of the boat and were snorkeling with turtles in no time!

The Apo Island tour is an entire day of snorkeling with sea turtles, fish, sea snakes, and hundreds of colorful corals. There are also a few small mountain peaks on Apo Island that you can hike.

TUBOD MARINE SANCTUARY

Tubod Marine Sanctuary is a protected reef making it one of the best snorkeling and dive sites on Siquijor Island .

Tubod Marine Sanctuary can be found in front of Coco Grove Resort and just off the shore from Tubod Beach in San Juan. From Paliton Beach, it’s approximately a 10-minute drive to reach Tubod Marine Sanctuary.

Colorful corals and an abundance of marine life flourish within this protected marine sanctuary so you are in for a real treat!

You can bring your own mask and snorkel with you or rent one from the resort and it’s a short distance swim out to the reef.

There are minimal currents and waves at Tubod Marine Sanctuary and the waters are incredibly clear. I recommend setting aside at least one hour of your day to enjoy this epic location.

BUTTERFLY SANCTUARY

A new tourist spot in Siquijor is the beautiful butterfly sanctuary.

The Butterfly Sanctuary is located close to the highest point on the island at Cang-apa village between Lazi and Larena. From San Juan, it is approximately a 40-minute drive.

The butterfly park is run by a local man who welcomes guests to walk around the gardens and interact with the butterflies and other bugs inside his sanctuary.

It’s wort a quick stop to have a poke around and grab a fresh buko (coconut) before continuing on to the next spot!

You can also visit the Quisol Mountain Viewpoint which is right around the corner from the butterfly sanctuary.

LOCONG FALLS

Nestled in the southern part of Siquijor Island, this waterfall offers a refreshing swimming spot for a small entrance fee of 50 pesos.

Once you get there, you’ll be greeted by a guide, which is optional but I recommend for supporting the local community.

Plus, he knows his way around the area so you stay safe with an expert.

These Siquijor Falls aren’t very high but beautiful nonetheless and there’s even a rope for you to swing and make the most of your time.

Overall, this spot provides a peaceful and secluded location for a refreshing swim in the natural beauty of Siquijor, and you can stop here on the way to Cambugahay Falls!

Locong Falls in Siquijor

CANGBANGAG FALLS

The last Siquijor waterfall I recommend visiting is Cangbangag Falls. Enveloped in lush forests, this waterfall is a breathtaking sight you don’t want to miss, despite the remote location.

You can get there by scooter from Butterfly Sanctuary and, truth be told, it’s easy to get lost while finding it, but the locals will help you once you’re nearby.

I recommend wearing proper shoes as it is about a 20-minute trek to reach the falls. However, the journey is worth it once you get a glimpse of it!

The falls are not crowded, mostly visited by friendly locals, which is a great way to experience a special experience when visiting Siquijor.

All in all, I highly recommend Cangbangag Falls as one of the Siquijor destinations to add to your itinerary.

4 Days Itinerary to Dumaguete and Siquijor

Dumaguete is one of the most relaxed cities you can find in the Philippines. In addition, it’s an important gateway to other places in the Visayan Region.

It’s connected via sea travel to Siquijor (and other provinces including Cebu, Bohol, and even Zamboanga City ). It’s also possible to visit other places via land travel including Sibulan, Dauin, Valencia, Bais, and Sipalay.

Here’s our itinerary to Dumaguete to Siquijor! I have updated this guide to include side trips to Valencia and Bais as well.

P.S. Don’t forget to check out our Island Guide to Siqujor .

How to get to Siquijor

How to get to apo island, what to do (apo island), what to do (dumaguete city), how to get to valencia, how to get to manjuyod, dumaguete city, budget and expenses, reminders and tips, what to read next:.

Here’s the itinerary. Please consider this a rough guide only!

Here are a few notes about this itinerary:

  • You can book your entry and exit flights via Sibulan Airport in Dumaguete City.
  • From the airport, there are vehicles waiting to take you to your destination. Or if you want a cheap option, walk outside the airport and flag down a tricycle or habal-habal where you can pay the regular rate.

Day 1 – Siquijor

  • Ride a habal-habal or tricycle to Dumaguete Port.
  • From Dumaguete Port, ride a ferry to Siquijor. Currently, there are 2 ports in Siquijor: Lanera Port and Siquijor Port . Regular ferry takes 2 hours, P140 per person; fastcraft takes 1 hour, P210 per person. Schedule is from 5:30AM to 6PM. Same applies for the return trip.

Once you arrive in Siquijor Port, there are locals offering tours (habal-habal or tricycle) or motorbike rentals.

By now we’re all familiar with Siquijor. Siquijor is an island province which is known for its waterfalls, Spanish-era churches, and laid-back beaches. Interestingly, Siquijor is also known as Witchcraft Island although currently it’s being promoted as a Healing Destination.

It’s possible to tour Siquijor in 2 days. There are 2 kinds of tours available: the Island Tour and Mountain Tour. Most day trippers choose the Island Tour since it includes the popular spots such as Cambugahay Falls and Salagdoong Beach.

Here are the places you can visit in the Island Tour for a day trip:

  • St. Francis of Assisi Church and I Love Siquijor Signage
  • Lazi Church
  • Capilay Spring Park
  • Century-Old Balete Tree and Fish Spa
  • Cambugahay Falls.
  • Salagdoong Beach
  • Guiwanon Spring Park
  • Paliton Beach
  • Hapitanan Cafe
  • Dumalaay Boulevard

I have written more about it here: Island Guide to Siqujor .

Of these, I liked these stops the best: Century-Old Balete Tree and Fish Spa, Cambugahay Falls, and Salagdoong Beach.

Another stop I recommend is the Tulapos Marine Sanctuary . It’s not normally included in an island tour, so you have to request it specifically. The main activity here is snorkeling where you can see corals, barracudas, turtles and black-tipped reef sharks. There is also a giant clam area.

I learned about it online and I was the only person during my visit. I had a really good time here and it was my first time to see baby sharks in the wild. This is actually one of the dive sites in Siquijor .

I think the rest of the stops including Capilay Spring Park (cold spring) and Guiwanon Spring Park (mangrove park) can be skipped or at least just go down for a quick look.

Paliton Beach is said to be one of the best beaches in Siquijor. For me it was just okay — nothing mindblowing. Other nearby provinces like Cebu have way better beaches.

Day 2 – Apo Island and Dumaguete City tour

  • From anywhere in Dumaguete City, ride a tricycle to Siaton. From there, ride a jeepney to Malapatay, Zamboanguita. (Total travel time is 20-30 minutes.)
  • Walk toward the port and rent a boat to Apo Island (boat ride 30-45 minutes). You can also look for other joiners to share costs with you.

An easier option is to book a joiner tour which includes round-trip transportation from Dumaguete City, boat tour, guide fees, and lunch. Snorkeling and fins rental is also included.

Apo Island is a volcanic island located in Dauin in Negros Oriental, one ferry away from Dumaguete City. It’s one of the best dive sites in the country. If you are not a diver, you can go on a boat tour and explore 3 spots: the turtle area and two snorkeling spots.

I booked a tour via Harold’s Mansion. Harold’s Mansion is a budget accommodation that offers cheap day tours to Apo Island. The tour starts at 6AM and ends at around 3PM.

This is my favorite part of this Dumaguete-Siquijor trip. The guides at Harold’s Mansion were extremely helpful. Each small group is assigned a guide and the guide will look for turtles and then signal for others to come when he spots one.

I saw a handful of sea turtles in the wild. They don’t mind the presence of humans so they just go about their business — gliding smoothly in the water or eating at the bottom of the seafloor.

The snorkeling areas were also beautiful, with large corals. I’m not a very good swimmer and a guide helped me get underwater shots of the snorkeling areas.

You can read more about my Snorkeling Experience in Apo Island (Negros Oriental ) .

Apo Island in Dauin

Dumaguete City is a university town. It is a great place to relax, but if you’re looking for activities you need to go on day trips from here.

Here are the things you can do in the city:

  • Stroll along Rizal Boulevard.
  • Go food tripping. Taste the famous sans rival and silvanas by Sans Rival Cakes and Pastries .
  • Visit the Tabo-Tabo market in Malapatay. It is open every Wednesday. It’s a cultural experience in itself, as you can see goods sold by mountain farmers including livestock, native delicacies and more.

I stayed here for 1-2 days, but mostly in my hotel room. I did went out to go to the sans rival cafe (which is highly recommended) and eat seafood all by myself.

Seafood in Hayahay Restobar, Dumaguete

Day 3 – Valencia

  • From Dumaguete, head to the jeepney terminal (south of public market) and ride a jeep to Valencia. Travel time is 15-20 minutes, fare is around P15 per person.

Note : Every Sunday, jeepneys going back to Dumaguete are until afternoon only.

Once you get off in Valencia, there will be motorbike and tricycle drivers offering you a tour. There are no standard rates so you have to haggle.

Valencia is another town in Negros Oriental that offers unique nature attractions, such as mountain hot springs and waterfalls. It’s one of the less-visited day trips from Dumaguete.

Here are the places you can see in Valencia:

  • Tierra Alta Resort . A Greek-inspired resort built in the slopes of Palinpinon. The main attraction of the resort is the lighthouse which offers a 360 view of the surrounding town.
  • Pulang Bato Falls . Also called Malabo Falls by locals. It is part of the Twin Falls, with the other one located just several meters away. Pulang Bato Falls is 30 meter high and surrounded by reddish rocks, caused by sulfur deposits. The waterfall is located inside a private resort so there is an entrance fee.
  • Hot Springs . There are a handful of hot springs in Valencia. Red Rock Hot Spring is the most popular. It offers a nice mountain view and it has a more natural feel compared to other hot spring resorts in the area, such as Ocean 24.
  • Casaroro Falls . This 100-meter-high falls is one of the best nature attractions in Negros Oriental. To reach the falls, you need to climb down a 350-step staircase. Getting a guide is recommended.

I enjoyed this trip, especially the hot spring. After exploring Siquijor and snorkeling in Apo Island the past days, I badly needed the soothing warm water. The mountain view is nice too.

Pulang Bato Falls in Valencia

Day 4 – Manjuyod in Bais City

  • From Dumaguete City, head to Ceres bus terminal and ride a bus to Bais City. Travel time is 1 hour, fare is around P70 per person.
  • From the bus terminal, ride a tricycle to Canibol Wharf.

From Canibol Wharf, you can arrange a boat to Manjuyod. If you’re in a group, you can share expenses. If not, wait for other joiners or book a joiner tour in advance.

Manjuyod is one of more recent attractions in Visayas.

The main activity here island hopping. The itinerary includes:

  • Manjuyod Sand Bar
  • Dolphin watching activity along Tanon Straight
  • Bais City Bird Sanctuary & Mangrove Forest.

Where to stay

There’s actually a lot of options for budget Dumaguete City hotels and inns, starting from P300 above. The ones located downtown are popular, so if you’re staying in that part of the city it’s best to reserve in advance.

Here are the best stays in Dumaguete City:

  • Go Hotels Dumaguete |   Book discounted rates here

Here are the best budget options:

Harold’s Mansion is possibly the most famous backpacker lodging in Dumaguete. Bunk beds in dorms are cheap, but for a little more you can have a single-bed aircon room in other inns. Harold’s Mansion is convenient because they offer Apo Island tours for joiners.

There are several beach resorts in Siquijor and it’s relatively cheap especially if you’re traveling with someone. You can get an air-conditioned room for around P1000 for 2-3 people.

Here are the best stays in Siquijor:

  • Coco Grove Beach Resort | Book discounted rates here
  • Infinity Heights Resort |  Book discounted rates here
  • Charisma Beach Resort | Book discounted rates here
  • Tori’s Backpackers Inn |   Book discounted rates here
  • JJ’s Backpackers Village | Book discounted rates here

I was solo so I opted to stay somewhere cheap: JJ’s Backpackers Village. It’s situated alongside other beach resorts in San Juan. This hostel has a modern native decor, complete with bamboo bunk beds. Apparently it’s a favorite especially of foreign tourists, so make sure to book ahead. There’s an eatery about 10 minutes away from JJ Backpackers Village where you can eat for cheap.

Looking for other accommodations in Siquijor? Book discounted resorts in Siquijor here .

Here’s a summary of major expenses:

Budget depends on how many you are in the trip. For 2 people, a safe budget is P8000 per person .

Here are important reminders about this Dumaguete-Siquijor itinerary:

  • The cheapest way to explore the island is by renting a motorbike. You will need a driver’s license and they are strict about this requirement. This way, you can also explore lesser-known waterfalls in the island.
  • I actually stayed longer in Siquijor on my trip. One thing that I learned is that if you’re staying overnight or longer, you definitely need to know how to drive because public transport is rare and habal-habal/tricycles ask for premium for going to places.

APO ISLAND:

  • If booking a joiner tour for Apo Island, it’s best to reserve in advance to get a confirmed slot.

Here are some useful contact information:

SIQUIJOR TRAVEL GUIDE with Sample Itinerary & Budget

By continuing to read this article, you agree to double check with the authorities or other concerned entities for the latest updates.

“It’s safe here,” our tricycle driver shared proudly. “You can leave your luggage in the tricycle. No one’s gonna take it.”

That would have been comforting, except he added, “They’re afraid of the needle .”

And just like that, my friend Grace was overtaken by fear. LOL. By reputation, Siquijor is a land of witchcraft and black magic, something that my companion was awfully aware of. But I have traveled long enough to know that a place’s reputation doesn’t always match reality, a view I have explained thoroughly to my friend to blow her doubts away.

But five minutes into this trip, our trike driver filled her mind with images of mysticism. “It’s real,” he said. “I can even take you to a village here so you could meet one.” He was probably referring to the faith healers.

Any other day, I would have said yes as it is something that has always tickled my curiosity, but Grace was quick to steer the conversation away from the topic. “Let’s stick to the beaches!”

Ah beaches. Yes, like many other remote corners of the Philippines, Siquijor too is bursting with something equally magical — natural beauty. This travel guide will allow you to explore beachy side of the province, not much the witchy side. (Sorry if that’s what you’re after. LOL.) And to be honest, that’s probably the only sorcery you’re gonna need.

WHAT'S COVERED IN THIS GUIDE?

UNDERSTANDING SIQUIJOR

When the Spaniards first set foot in the island, they were captivated by fireflies swarming around molave trees, hence the nickname “Isla del Fuego” (Island of Fire). As one of the first provinces reached by the clutches of Spain, Siquijor has Roman Catholicism deeply rooted in their history and culture. In fact, most of the island’s manmade attractions are religious structures.

dumaguete siquijor tourist spot

In terms of land area and population, Siquijor is the third smallest province in the country. It’s so small, you can see most of its key tourist spots in one day or two, although we urge you to stay longer.

  • Language : Cebuano. English is widely understood.
  • Currency : Philippine peso (PhP). PhP100 = USD2, EUR 1.65, KRW 22000, JPY218
  • Mode of payment : Cash. There are a few ATMs in the island so if you’re coming from Dumaguete or Cebu, it would be more convenient to withdraw money before your visit.

WHERE TO STAY IN SIQUIJOR

dumaguete siquijor tourist spot

If you’re strapped for cash, you’ll find several accommodations for less than P1000 a night, with some going as low as P300, especially at town centers and port area. However, note that many of them are basic fan rooms with barely any amenities.

But if you want more comfort, you can stay at a guest house. If you have more funds, staying at a beach-front resort would be ideal. The following are the top options on Agoda, ranked by reviews. Here are the top rated properties on Agoda.

How to get to siquijor.

Siquijor doesn’t have its own airport, but it is easily accessible from Dumaguete City in Negros Oriental. Access from ferry is also possible but it takes hours.

dumaguete siquijor tourist spot

MANILA TO SIQUIJOR

If you’re coming from Manila, you have to fly to Dumaguete or Cebu first. Between the two, Dumaguete is the faster, cheaper, and easier option.

  • Fly to Dumaguete City . Philippine Airlines and Cebu Pacific Air carry passengers from Manila to Dumaguete in about 1.5 hours. You can look for flights at Traveloka.com .
  • Take a tricycle to Dumaguete Sea Port (near the boulevard). Travel time: 15-30 minutes. Fare: P120-150.
  • Buy a ticket and board a ferry to Siquijor . Travel time: 1 hour. Fare: P136 to P360, depending on the destination port, class, and liner. Several shipping lines ply this route so you’re sure to find one every 2 hours. Options are fewer on Saturdays, though. You also have to pay the terminal fee, P25.

Note : The island has two main sea ports, though: one in Siquijor (the town) and the other in Larena. Choose the one near your resort or hotel.

CEBU TO SIQUIJOR

If you’re in Cebu or you want to visit Siquijor as part of your extended Cebu trip, here’s how to get there.

  • Make your way to Cebu South Terminal . If you’re coming from Mactan airport, board the myBus outside the domestic terminal to SM City. There’s a bus leaving the Mactan Airport every 30 minutes from 7am-11am, and every 20 minutes from 11am-9:30pm. Fare: P25. Then take a cab to the South Bus Terminal. Outside these hours, you may take a cab, Uber or Grab straight to the bus terminal. Fare is between P230-P300, depending on traffic.
  • Hop into the bus bound for Liloan (in Santander Municipality). Travel time: 4-5 hours. Fare: P162 (ordinary), P200 (air-conditioned).
  • Board the ferry bound for Sibulan (in Negros Oriental). Travel time: 20-25 minutes. Fare: P50 (ticket) + P10 Terminal Fee + P2 Municipal Fee.
  • At Sibulan Port, ride a jeepney or pedicab to Dumaguete City . Jeepney fare is P12. Pedicab is P10 per person.
  • Once in Dumaguete City, take a tricycle to Dumaguete Port . Fare: P10.

HOW TO GET AROUND SIQUIJOR

Upon disembarking at either Siquijor or Larena Port, you will be greeted by tricycle and multi-cab drivers, enticing you to get their services. These are legit. (At least most of them are.) Not only can they take you to your resort, they can also tour you around.

Transportation options are very limited in the island. If you can’t drive a motorcycle, you have two main choices:

  • Tricycle Tour : P1000-P1200 per tricycle. Up to 3 pax.
  • Multi-cab Tour : P1800 per vehicle. Can accommodate 15+ pax.

According to our trike driver, the following are also available, although we never really saw any rental places.

  • Van Tour : P2500 per vehicle
  • Motorcycle rental : P350 per vehicle

In our case, we began our tour right away and decided to just drop our luggage at the reception of our resort along the way. This way, we get to maximize our day.

The itinerary isn’t fixed. Although your guide/driver will have their recommendations, you also get to choose where you want to go. For example, Kagusuan Beach isn’t part of the usual tricycle route but our driver agreed to take us there at no extra cost.

If you enjoyed your first day tour, hire your guide-driver for your second day so he could pick you up at the resort.

PLACES TO VISIT IN SIQUIJOR

There are two main tours in Siquijor: Coastal Tour and Mountain Tour. The Coastal Tour will show you around the island, making stops at beaches and churches among others. The Mountain Tour will take you deeper inland to Cantabon Cave and Bandilaan Park.

To maximize your time, choose your stops well. Siquijor has a lot of wonderful spots to offer, but to be honest, there are some that can be a bit underwhelming. For example, the Old Balete Tree and Capilay Spring Park can feel like tourist traps at first glance and they pale in comparison to Aurora’s greater balete tree and Camiguin’s hot springs respectively. But here’s the thing: they are legit attractions among locals , who were the original patrons. Context. But feel free to skip them if you feel like you’re not into them. This way, you can have more time for other sites.

Coastal Tour (aka Land Tour)

dumaguete siquijor tourist spot

  • Salagdoong Beach . Perhaps the most popular beach on the island. Great for cliff-jumping. Entrance fee: P30. Parking Fee: P40.
  • Kagusuan Beach . A short stretch of sand concealed in between rocks.
  • Cambugahay Falls . A small, three-tiered waterfall. Perfect for a quick freshwater dip and a mandatory Tarzan rope swing (jk, it’s not mandatory). Entrance Fee: P10. Unli-Swing: P20. Parking Fee: P20.
  • Lazi Church and Convent . More formally known as San Isidro Labrador Parish Church, a Baroque structure which was declared a National Cultural Treasure.
  • Siquijor Church . Aka St Francis de Assisi Church. Standing right next to the port.
  • Capilay Spring Park
  • Enchanted Balete Tree. Entrance fee: P10.
  • Paliton Beach
  • Guiwanon Spring Park

Mountain Tour

dumaguete siquijor tourist spot

  • Cantabon Cave . Great for spelunking newbies. It’s not that challenging, but there are curious rock formations and refreshing pools inside. This was the highlight of our stay in Siquijor! Tour Fee: P500 for 3 pax, including guide fee and rental of helmet and flash lights.
  • Mt. Bandilaan Park . Perched atop a hill, offering a walking trail and a view of the province and nearby islands.

SAMPLE SIQUIJOR ITINERARY

Below is a sample overnight itinerary with cost breakdown for a group of three. You may pattern your own itinerary after this. Just adjust it according to your needs.

You can book a tricycle or multi-cab tour of the island as soon as you arrive in the island. If your resort is along the way, you may ask the driver to make a quick stop there to check in and leave your bags at the reception before continuing your tour.

The Island Tour mentioned below would take you to key tourist spots in Siquijor including Cambugahay Falls, Salagdoong Beach, Lazi Church and Convent, Siquijor Church, Ecnchanted Balete Tree, and Capilay Spring Park.

Day 1: ARRIVAL + COASTAL TOUR 09:00 am – ETD Dumaguete Port – P25 Terminal Fee 10:00 am – ETA Siquijor Port – P250 Fare 10:20 am – Start Tricycle Tour – P334 (P1000/3pax) 12:30 nn – Lunch – P150 02:00 pm – Continue Island Tour, Total fees: P100 05:30 pm – Back at the resort, rest 07:00 pm – Dinner – P200

Day 2: CANTABON CAVE SPELUNKING 07:00 am – Begin Mountain Tour – P400 (P1200/3 pax) 07:30 am – Cantabon Cave Spelunking – P167 (P500/3 pax) 10:30 am – Bandilaan Park 12:00 nn – Lunch – P150 01:50 pm – ETD Siquijor Port – P250 02:40 pm – ETA Dumaguete Port

The itinerary above will cost you P2100 (USD 42, SGD 57, EUR 37) excluding airfare and accommodations.

If you’re a group of 3 and you have P1500 hotel budget, prepare to shell out P2600 .

Note that we also allotted P150-P200 per meal. That’s more than enough if you decide to eat at cheap eateries around town centers. (That’s what we did.)

Most travelers visit Siquijor as part of a bigger Negros Oriental-Siquijor journey, which also includes Dumaguete City, Apo Island, and sometimes Manjuyod Sandbar. We’ll be providing a sample itinerary for that soon so be sure to check back.

DUMAGUETE TOURIST SPOTS | 7 BEST PLACES TO VISIT

James sitting on rocks enjoying the view of over the lakes and the distant mountains

In the South of the Philippines and just a short ferry ride from Cebu, Bohol, and Siquijor, there is a charming City named Dumaguete with loads of things to do, and tourist spots within the City itself and neighboring Valencia region.

Forget about the bustling streets in Cebu or chaotic Manila, life in Dumaguete City goes by at an easy-going pace.

Although it may seem like a low-key destination mostly known with students for the Silliman University, within the City there are a handful of Dumaguete Tourist Spots to explore. And a 30-minute ride into the highlands leads to a whole different climate in the Valencia region packed with tourist attractions unlike any other.

If you are looking for full days of adventure, then the tourist spots along Dumaguete’s outskirts and highlands are the answer.

Expect towering cascades, hot springs, and a water park within 30 minutes ride from Dumaguete City centre. And a ride out of Dumaguete City, through the countryside and farmland leads to 2 huge lakes nestled within mountain tops covered in jungle.

This detailed guide breaks down all there is to know about Dumaguete including the best tourist spots – places of interest in Dumaguete City – how to get around – where to stay and at the bottom of the article is an easy to follow 2 or 3 day itinerary and a few of the best restaurants in the area.

WHERE IS DUMAGUETE

Dumaguete City is on Negros island in the South of the Philippines. It is somewhere in the centre of popular islands like Cebu and Bohol and is a 90 minute ferry ride from Siquijor island.

To give a better perspective, most tourists first set foot in the Philippines on Cebu island. Dumaguete is on the next island (Negros island) further South of Cebu and a narrow straight separates one island from the other.

Are you passing through Dumaguete and only plan to stay a night or 2?

Pre-booking an online tour is a great way to secure your spot with a reputable tour operator. The tour will include some of Dumaguete’s best tourist spots in one day or even hop over to a nearby island with a colorful reef.

CLICK HERE TO PRE-BOOK A TOURIST SPOT TOUR OR BOAT TOUR

HOW TO GET TO DUMAGUETE

Since Dumaguete is close to other popular islands, getting there is straightforward.

There are 2 ports of entry to Dumaguete, the Sibulan Port about 10 minutes ride out of the City and the Port of Dumaguete directly in the City.

If you are already somewhere in the South of Cebu (Moalboal or Oslob) hop on a Ceres southbound bus and let the driver or ticket officer know you are heading to Dumaguete. The bus will drop you off about 1 km from Liloan port and you can take a tricycle to drop you off right outside the port.

Then from Liloan port hop on the 30 minute ferry. Ferries depart every 30-minutes and cost 70 PHP ($1.40). Once you arrive in Sibulan port you will be a 10 minute ride from Dumaguete City and you can use a tricycle, jeepney or multi-cab for the journey.

We hopped on a jeepney and paid 10 PHP ($0.20) each. But keep in mind jeepneys have fixed routes so you may still have some walking to do from where you get off.

OceanJet Ferry

TIP: There are multiple ferries every day between Siquijor and Dumaguete. The total ferry ride is around 90 minutes. Ferry prices start at 120 PHP ($2.40) up to 380 PHP ($11.6) for a business class seat with OceanJet ferry.

From Bohol, the process takes longer and involves 2 back-to-back ferries.

Take a ferry to Siquijor from Tagbilaran port in Bohol. The ferry will dock at Larena port in Siquijor so you will need to see if any ferries will be available to Dumaguete when you arrive. And there is another port named Siquijor port (on Siquijor island) most ferries to Dumaguete depart from Siquijor port so you may need to change ports, it is about a 10-minute ride via tricycle.

Map of Dumaguete and all the tourist spots pointed out

DUMAGUETE TOURIST SPOTS

Rizal boulevard.

Rizal Boulevard in Dumaguete is a popular promenade along the City’s coast and is one of the main tourist attractions.

Hotels, restaurants and bars dot Rizal Boulevard facing the ocean and making one of Dumaguete’s most sought areas.

During the hot sunny days not much will be going on but come sunset time and the 1 km stretch comes to life. It isn’t necessarily a sunset spot since you won’t be facing in that direction. But street vendors, food stalls and the fact many locals head over for the evening make for a vibrant atmosphere.

ST. CATHERINE OF ALEXANDRIA CATHEDRAL PARISH

The St. Catherine of Alexandria Cathedral Parish is right next to the beautiful Dumaguete bell tower. Although these 2 tourist attractions in Dumaguete are 2 separate sites, they can be easily combined since there is only a 3 minute walk from to the other.

The Dumaguete Bell Tower is the most prominent. A tall round tower shooting above the surrounding buildings and the St. Catherine Cathedral. The Cathedral is usually open to the public but I’m not sure if the tower is accessible to visitors.

CASARORO FALLS

The list of places to visit in Dumaguete may be limited but a short ride out of the city leads to a whole different level of tourist destinations.

And the answer for those looking for a stunning attraction is a towering cascade named Casaroro falls.

Although there are concrete stairs and a paved path leading to Casaroro falls, the area is mostly in its raw, natural beauty. And at some we also had to make our way over the river along a makeshift bamboo bridge.

Casaroro is at the end of a 30 minute trail along that leads from the parking area down a flight of stairs and into a valley. All along the valley are streams of water closed in the jungle.

We didn’t see the cascade and some point after a bend along the path, this huge powerfall waterfall soaking all the area with spray and creating mossy green boulders and everything slippery.

Getting close to Casaroro was daunting, the powerful cascade almost blew me away and got me soaked

Are you planning a trip to Cebu , Siquijor , Bohol , Dumaguete , Siargao or Camiguin ?

You can hop from one island to the other by ferry. We have visited all these islands and wrote detailed guides specifically for each island’s very best tourist attractions.

BALINSASAYAO TWIN LAKES

From Dumaguete City it takes about 1 hour to reach the Balinsasayao Twin Lakes. The ride itself could be considering a thing to do in Dumaguete which will take you along the highland countryside on the outskirts of Dumaguete.

The Balinsasayao Twin Lakes and 2 big crater lakes separated by a ridge. Mountain tops covered in a tropical landscape home to lots of bird life enclose the lakes.

We came here during the week and there was only about 10 other visitors. However, on weekend and festive days the lakes seem to be one of the places locals visit.

Keep in mind that swimming in the lakes isn’t allowed but you can rent a boat that will row you around or take you to a beautiful viewpoint looking over both lakes.

Instead of taking the boat to reach the viewpoint, we decided to take a 30-minute trek through the jungle and over slippery stairs and paths. The trek is straightforward and also has a railing to hang on to but the fact all the rocky parts are covered in moss makes it extremely slippery and challenging.

FOREST CAMP MOUNTAIN RESORT

A getaway for weekend breaks with locals and a great place to visit while in Dumaguete, Forest Camp Mountain Resort is the perfect place to spend a few hours, a whole day, or even spend the night. And it only takes 30 minutes to get there by car or tricycle from Dumaguete.

The property is a huge piece of land with loads of pools and water based activities along with a skate park, zip line, and even a rock-climbing wall.

Considering The Forest Camp Mountain Resort is a man-made tourist attraction in Valencia, it blends in well with its surrounding landscape. And we actually had fun playing around in one of the slides. I don’t actually know what the locals thought seeing these 2 grown ups running up and down the slide for about an hour, but it was a fun thing to do.

The biggest pool over flows into a valley beside the property and pools

PULANGBATO FALLS

The region of Valencia is loaded with interesting tourist attractions worth visiting from Dumaguete. One of them is Pulangbato Falls.

If you want to visit a waterfall that is very easy to reach, then Pulangbato is the answer. From Dumaguete it takes 30 minutes to reach the main entry and a further 5 minute walk along a paved path and through a resort.

Although getting to Pulangbato Falls is for some reason through a resort, the waterfall area hasn’t really had any built up parts. There is a wobbly rope bridge crossing over from the resort area to the foot of the cascade and a small hut beside the natural waterfall pool.

The orange weaved rope bridge is probably one of the features of Pulangbato and is a photogenic highlight of this attraction with a powerful cascade in the background. There isn’t any restrictions for swimming in the pool, just don’t get close to the cascade for your own safety.

Jacqueline mustered the courage to jump into the chilly water.

RED ROCKS HOT SPRINGS

The Red Hot Springs are a great to visit while in Dumaguete and should be combined with Pulangbato Falls. Both attractions are on the same route, in fact these last to tourist spots are just a 2 minute ride from one another.

During our trip through Asia we visited a few hot springs, but Red Rocks where are favorite. The springs are located in the highlands where temperatures are much cooler than the city and it seems there isn’t so much humidity. This and the fact Pulangbato Falls is close is a good reason why you should visit these hot springs.

We actually came to Red Rock Hot Springs after visiting and swimming in the cold water at Pulangbato Falls. And add to that, exactly when we parked the scooter, it also started raining. This was definitely the perfect combination to soak in the hot baths.

The resort style Hot Springs isn’t really big and there are 2 decent sized pools on 2 different and each level has a slight difference in temperature. But the top level pool felt like it had the perfect temperature on that day.

Keep in mind that although The Red Rock Hot Springs are in a cooler climate, on hot days it may not be the perfect tourist to visit. We visited during the day but it was gloomy and no sun. On hot days it may be best to avoid the mid day heat and visit once the sun starts to go down and the day cools.

Jacqueline spent most the time under this water spout where the water fresh water flows from making it the hottest part of the pool

WHERE TO STAY IN DUMAGUETE

The main area where most tourists stay is in Dumaguete City itself. This is where most restaurants, Cafes, hotels, and bars are located and is also close to the port of Dumaguete where the ferry to Siquijor and Bohol departs.

Another option is to stay in the cooler climate of Valencia. Here you will be close to some of the most beautiful attractions. But keep in mind that Valencia is a 30 minute ride from the City and its amenities (restaurants, bars, shops) and once the sun goes down there isn’t really much to do.

THE FLYING FISH HOSTEL

Set within a peaceful surrounding of bamboo and mango trees about 2 km from the City centre, The Flying Fish Hostel offers both single bunk beds or private double rooms. Beautifully designed rooms feature A/C and wardrobe and a shared lounge and T.V area for hostel guests. This is one of the best-rated budget stays on booking.com and Agoda.

CASA ARRIETA HOSTEL

All tourist amenities are close to Casa Arrieta and Rizal Boulevard and some of the best restaurants are a short walk away. Offering A/C dormitory rooms, the property also offers guests with a shared lounge, table tennis and even a barbeque area.

GOLDEN GATE SUITES

Golden Gate Suites offers A/C rooms with flat screen T.V at a great price. The property is close to some local trades like money changers, shops, a mall and a convenience store (7 11). Guest will be 4 blocks away from Dumaguete’s popular promenade and the ocean.

A few features of the property are A/C and rooms with balconies which isn’t that common to find. Casa Rubin is highly rated for many reasons and guests love the hotels close proximity to Rizal Boulevard and a free breakfast is included in the price.

ROVIRA SUITES

Boasting an outdoor pool, garden, sun terrace, and beautifully designed rooms. Rooms include all necessary amenities like satellite T.V, electric kettle, clothes rack, and balcony.

THE HENRY RESORT DUMAGUETE

A relatively new resort on the outskirts of Dumaguete. The Henry resort features hut style high end lodging options dotted around an outdoor pool and tall palm trees in a tropical garden. Every room is furnished in style and offers all amenities you could imagine like A/C, minibar, coffee/tea maker, flat screen T.V and more. Onsite is also a restaurant. This is a property for those who want to spend a few nights in a luxurious tropical hotel but don’t want to pay a hefty price tag.

DUMAGUETE ITINERARY

If you are going to be hopping the islands in the South of the Philippines, then at some point you are bound to pass through Dumaguete. And as to how many days you should spend in Dumaguete, anything between 1 to 3 nights is enough depending on how much you want to see.

Here is the exact route we took in the South of the Philippines

We started in Cebu City and went down to Moalboal. From here on we moved on to Dumaguete, Siquijor and Bohol in this order. All these destinations are connected with daily ferries.

On day 1 start off from the tourist attractions within the City and have dinner along Rizal Boulevard.

On day 2 include 3 of the nearby tourist spots. Casaroro Falls, Pulangbato Falls and Red Rock Hot springs are about 30 minutes ride away and close to one another. If you start early enough you could also include The Forest Camp Mountain Resort after Casaroro Falls and end the day with Pulangbato and Red Rocks.

Since all 4 tourist attractions are close to one another, the total travel time between all spots and back to Dumaguete will be around 90 minutes. Considering only Casaroro Falls involves a 30 minute hike, it would be possible to spend 2 hours at each attractions and if you start at 8am be back at 6:00pm.

Balinsasayao is a completely different route. It takes around 1 hour to drive up to Balinsasayao Twin Lakes, therefore it would be best to reserve at least half a day for this attraction.

BEST TIME TO GO

Having a tropical climate means there are only 2 season in the Philippines. Either the rainy season or dry season and temperatures rarely drop below 20° C.

Weatherwise, the best time to visit the Philippines and Dumaguete is from November to March. You can expect mostly sunny days and almost no rain during those months.

November – March:  Best weather + peak tourist months and higher prices

April – October:  Rainy months but not constant + cheaper prices and less crowds

The dry season is also when most tourists visit the Philippines. Also, expect higher prices on accommodation and tours might be more expensive and some popular attractions will get busy at certain times especially on weekend and festive days when the locals have days off.

Rainy season doesn’t necessarily mean it will constantly rain. Usually, during the rainy season, rain tends to come in heavy bursts and only lasts about an hour.

So if you want to find fewer tourists and get cheaper accommodation prices, then the Months between April and October  (rainy season)  should be your choice.

BEST RESTAURANTS IN DUMAGUETE

Dumaguete is in fact a City yet it feels more like a charming coastal town with the perks offered in Cities. This is also true for its large concentration of restaurants.

Whether its a quick bite at one of the Cafe’s or local eateries, or a night out for great food, Dumaguete offers a broad appeal of places to eat.

Here we have listed the best restaurants we tried out during our week in Dumaguete. Almost all the restaurants are within a 10 to 15-minute walk from Rizal Boulevard. There are also some good cafe’s listed which also feature high-speed wifi.

Neva’s Pizza: a cozy restaurant pumping out authentic brick oven style Italian pizza and a variety of Italian, western and local dishes.

Tres Bistro: offering a combination of local and western food.

Adamo: our favourite restaurant. Fusion dishes combined with a fine dining experience yet nothing too extravagant. Also, a few great craft beers to try. Prices are on the higher end compared with other places.

Tom N Toms Coffee: serves delicious quick bites, iced and hot coffees and has good wifi

Fun Cafe/Bar: a social place for local teens and featuring a pool table, board games and small cubicles for extra privacy. The high speed wifi connection is the best we found in Dumaguete.

DUMAGUETE + NEGROS TRAVEL GUIDE (Budget + Itinerary)

by thepinay solobackpacker | Sep 11, 2023 | Negros Oriental , Travel Guide | 0 comments

Dumaguete City in Negros Oriental has long been a tourist-magnet.  It is one of the more popular spots for expats who wish to retire in the Philippines.  The bustling city is home to the scenic Siliman University, the oldest American private university in the country.  Dumaguete City is dubbed as a University town because a large percentage of its population are University Student.  Despite its popularity to tourists, there’s really not much to see here.  You can even explore Dumaguete city attractions in a day or even half day! But many will agree that it is a good base for exploring its postcard-worthy neighbors such as Manjuyod, Bais, Dauis, Valencia and Siquijor.  You can even hop on a ferry here and head to Dapitan, Zambanga del Norte in Western Mindanao! So without further ado, here’s my Dumaguete Travel Guide to help you plan your trip.

DOLPHIN WATCHING BAIS

MANJUYOD WHITE SAND BAR

dumaguete 47

The most beautiful sandbar in the Philippines that I’ve seen to date.  This tiny speck of sandbar situated off the coast of Manjuyod but also accessible from Bais.  The sandbar only appears when the tide is low, but even if it’s submerged, the island is still oozing with charm.  Manjuyod Sandbar is included in the Bais Dolphin Watching Tour.

MANJUYOD TOUR: RESERVE HERE

HOW TO GET TO MANJUYOD SANDBAR AND BAIS DOLPHIN WATCHING:

To get to Manjuyod Sandbar and Bais Dolphin Watching from Dumaguete, you need to ride a Ceres Bus to Bais and alight at Brgy.Calindagan.  Air-conditioned bus fare is PHP 50 (USD 0.99/SGD 1.34/MYR 4.23) while ordinary bus fare is PHP 20 (USD 0.40/SGD 0.54/MYR 2).   balinsasayao twin lakes.

dumaguete 34

The protected area of Balinsasayao Twin Lakes actually covers Lake Kabalin-an, Laka Danao and Lake Balinsasayao.  So when you pay a visit here, you’ll get to see 3 lakes.  I find Lake Kabalin-an really picturesque because of the trees submerged in its placid, emerald water.  Too bad we were in a hurry (I went here via private tour courtesy of a resort) so I wasn’t able to take a decent photo of the lake. The area is part of 3 municipalities in Negros Oriental: Sibulan, San Jose and Valencia.

Balinsasayaw Twin Lakes Tour: RESERVE HERE

  • Tour package includes a visit to the twin crater lakes of Balinsasayao and Danao + Dumaguete City Tour (Siliman University, Handumanan Souvenir Shop, Sansrival Cafe and Dumaguete City Boulevard)

HOW TO GET TO BALINSASAYAO TWIN LAKES FROM DUMAGUETE:

From Dumaguete City to get to Balinsasayao Twin Lakes, ride a jeep to Amlan and alight at La-laan junction in San Jose. Transit time is about 15 minutes and jeepney fare is roughly PHP 15(USD 0.30/SGD 0.40/MYR 1.27).

At La-laan Junction, charter a habal-habal (motorcycle) to take you to Balinsasayao Twin Lakes National Park. Chartered motorcycle is PHP 400 (USD 8/SGD 11/MYR 34), good for two. Some drivers might fool you and charge you PHP 400 per person, look for other drivers that will offer you the same price for two persons.

At Balinsasayao Twin Lakes, pay the PHP 25 (USD 0.49/SGD 0.67/MYR 2) entrance fee per person.  If you wat to see the Twin Lakes, you can hike or ride the paddle boat, will set you back PHP 350 (USD 7/SGD 9.38/MYR 30), so that’s about PHP 58 (USD 1/SGD 10/MYR 5) per person if sharing with 5 travel buddies or 5 other tourists.

LIST OF BALINSASAYAO TWIN LAKE FEES:

RED ROCK HOT SPRING

dumaguete 13

Red Rock Hot Springs is located at Pulangtubig, Valencia, just along the craggy road to Pulang Bato Waterfalls. The pool source its warm water from natural spots around the pool. Bring extra clothes if you plan to swim here as much as possible, avoid wearing light or pastel colored shirt as the water can stain your clothes. The water here is believed to be therapeutic.

PULANG BATO FALLS

dumaguete 16

As its name suggest, Pulang Bato is surrounded by natural red rocks where water gushes down.  According to the locals, this is because of sulfur coming from the nearby Mt. Talines.  Along the way, you will see Red Hot Spring.

HOW TO GET TO PULANG BATO FALLS AND CASARORO FALLS:

To get to Pulang Bato Falls in Valencia from Dumguete.  Ride a jeep to Valencia.  Alight at Valencia Terminal. Fare is about PHP 24 (USD 0.47/SGD 0.64/MYR 5).  From there, hire a habal-habal (motorcycle) to Pulang Bato Falls.  Fare is PHP 200 (USD 17 /SGD 5.36/MYR 17), good for two persons.  Add PHP 100 (USD 8/SGD 3/MYR 8.47) to include a visit to Casaroro Falls.   You will see Red Hot Spring during the hike on the way to Pulang Bato Falls. So that’s a total of PHP 300 (USD 25/SGD 8/MYR 25.40) for the two waterfalls including the Red Hot Spring.

Entrance fee to Casaroro Falls is PHP 10 (USD 0.20/SGD 0.27/ MYR0.85), entrance fee to Pulang Bato Waterfalls is PHP 20 (USD 0.40/SGD 0.54/MYR 2) and red Hot Spring entrance fee is PHP 20 (USD 0.40/SGD 0.54/MYR 2). So total of PHP 50 (USD 0.90/SGD 1.34/MYR 4.23) entrance fee for the 3 attractions.

DUMAGUETE ITINERARY AND EXPENSES

dumaguete 22

Dumaguete Itinerary

(3 days 2 nights itinerary dumaguete + manjuyod/bais + twin lakes).

Here’s a sample itinerary for Dumaguete for a 3 day 2 night stay in Dumaguete, includes a side trip to Balinsasayao Twin Lakes and Manjuyod Sandbar.  There’s not much to see in Dumaguete itself, you can explore it in half day, but like I said, the city is a good base for exploring the neighboring towns and provinces like Siquijor and South Cebu.  I created two sample itineraries here to help you plan your upcoming trip to Dumaguete City.

*The PHP 5,143 (USD 102/SGD 138/MYR 435) estimated Dumaguete trip budget is supposing you are two people traveling together and will share the Manjuyod + Bais Tour boat (PHP 1,500 each) + Apo Island Tour (share cost with other tourist for PHP 500 each) and 2 days hotel stay for PHP 500 per person and you’ll stick to a budget of PHP 100-PHP 150 per meal.  Cost can still go lower if you’re able to find other tourists to share the cost of the Manjuyod + Bais Boat.

If you are on a limited budget, you can do Dumaguete City + Apo Island instead.  See sample Dumaguete 2 days 1 night itinerary below.

dumaguete 32

DUMAGUETE DIY ITINERARY

(2 Days 1 Night stay)

DUMAGUETE + APO REEF

If you have limited time, you can actually explore Dumaguete for 2 days and include Apo Reef in your itinerary.  This sample Dumaguete Itinerary is good for a weekend stay.

*The PHP 2,423 (USD 48/SGD 65/MYR 205) estimated Dumaguete trip budget is supposing you are alone and you’re able to share the cost of island hopping boat with other tourists for PHP 500 per person. Also, this is assuming you’re able to book a hotel for PHP 500 per person for 1 day.  You can save PHP 500 if you check out on the second day before leaving for Apo Island and leave your luggage at the airport.

DUMAGUETE BUDGET

dumaguete 38

So how much will it cost to tour Dumaguete? Touring Dumaguete City is pretty cheap, you can even do a walking tour here.   But if you start exploring its neighboring towns and provinces, your wallet must be ready.  If you have limited time and budget, you can just pick one or two tours outside Dumaguete.  To give you an idea how much to spend for each tours, here’s a list of possible expenses for touring the surrounding towns of Dumaguete.

*Budget for Valencia DIY Tour if you are traveling alone.

*This is supposing you are alone traveling to Balinsasayao Twin Lakes and you are hiking to the lakes (instead of taking the paddle boat for PHP 350).

*This is supposing you are alone and you are able to share the cost of the boat with other tourists. I recommend this DIY Tour on weekends or holidays when more tourists visit Apo Island because there is a good chance you’ll be able to share cost of the chartered boat. Otherwise, best to just book a tour package to Apo Island via travel agencies in Dumaguete.  Should cost around PHP 1,000 (USD 20/SGD 27/ MYR 85) to PHP 1,500 (USD 30/SGD 40/ MYR 127) per person.

*This is supposing you are two people traveling sharing the cost of a PHP 3,500 boat.

DUMAGUETE TRAVEL TIPS

*You can save a lot if you are traveling in a group so you can share the cost of hiring a boat for Manjuyod Sandbar + Bais Dolphin Watching.

*If you are alone, or there’s just two of you and you want to visit Apo Island, it is cheaper to join tours to Apo Island via travel agencies in Dumaguete City for PHP 1,000 (USD 20/SGD 27/MYR 85) per person to PHP 1,500 (USD 30/SGD 40/ MYR 127) per person.  Apo Island tour packages usually include transfer/ transportation, boat, snorkeling gears and lunch.

*To save a few bucks especially if you are traveling solo to Dumaguete, you can go outside the airport and hail a multi-cab to downtown Dumaguete.  Fare is PHP 10 (USD 0.20/SGD 0.27/ MYR0.85).

*Always negotiate and agree with the price before riding a chartered tricycle to and from the airport and even habal-habal (motorcycles) to certain destinations.

*Don’t go home without trying the famous sansrival and silvanas of Dumaguete, you can even take them home.  You can purchase at Sansrival Bistro or Sansrival Cakes and Pastries. Another must-try is the budbud kabog, a local delicacy, sold at Painitan at Dumaguete Public Market.

*Please do not litter on the islands, bring your trash with you and dispose them properly.

*Wear aqua shoes when swimming or snorkeling to avoid any untoward incidents. Do not step on the corals please.

* Bring extra clothes if you plan to swim at Red Rock Hot Spring and Pulang Bato, avoid wearing light or pastel colored shirt as the water can stain your clothes.

It's best to plan your trip around its dry summer season as well as its colorful festivals to fully enjoy the province and their culture. This section is divided into two: a guide on the dry and summer season, plus the two annual festivals within the region.

Dumaguete weather is at its best from February to March, the chilly but dry months of the year; and from May to early June, the summer months. If you don't like traveling during the rainy season, avoid going there around October.

If you don't mind the rain and the closed down tourist spots, you will be able to witness and enjoy one of its famous festivals in the mid of October

If you want to see the city in its lively and vibrant form, consider visiting during the time of their festive celebrations. Both locals and international travelers attend street parades and join local games that are exciting and fun to be a part of!

Two of its most popular celebrations include the Sandurot Festival and Buglasan Festival. This section will describe the festivals and how important it is in helping shape the culture of Dumaguete.

Sandurot Festival

The city holds its Sandurot Festival, which means "fellowship and reaching out," every September. You wouldn't want to miss the Pasigarbo event, where the streets are full of drumbeats and dancing.

And of course, Pasundayag, where different stories of the city's traditions are narrated through dancing. The roads are overcrowded during this time, so make sure to keep your essential belongings near you.

Buglasan Festival

In the middle of October every year, they celebrate the Buglasan Festival, popularly known as "The Festival of Festivals." It's a province-wide event that runs for ten days. Aside from exciting activities, you can witness street dancing and showdowns every 3rd Friday of October.

Most of the establishments are open during this time. Bring your family and friends! You'll get a taste of Dumaguete culture at this festival.

How to Get to Dumaguete

Photo by Philippine Airlines There are four main entry points when going to Dumaguete: Manila, Cebu, Bacolod, and Bohol. It's essential to do your research on which option for transport to choose and what time to leave so you can maximize your stay here.

Make sure to book all airplane or ferry tickets in advance to avoid problems during your trip.

From Manila

If you're coming from the capital of the Philippines, Manila in Luzon, the fastest way is to fly directly to Dumaguete island. Below is the detailed information, including which airlines you can choose from.

Usually, the flight will take you around 1 hour to 15 or 25 minutes, depending on the airline. You can check flights in local airlines such as Philippine Airlines and Cebu Pacific . Make sure to book in advance as there might be a lot of people going to Dumaguete during peak season, specifically during the summer season. Have your travel documents with you at all times.

Cebu is an island located right next to Dumaguete. From Cebu, you can ride a plane, a bus, or a ferry, depending on your budget and schedule.

Regardless of your chosen mode of transportation, make sure to plan and buy tickets in advance (if applicable) to avoid delayed or worse, canceled plans. Always have your travel documents ready in case you need to present it to an airport authority or personnel.

If you're looking for the fastest way, your best option is to take a 50-minute direct flight. It’s convenient and safer if you’re not familiar with other modes of transportation.

Philippine Airlines and Cebu Pacific cater flights from Cebu to Dumaguete. Have your travel documents prepared before booking a flight. Book in advance to get the most comfortable seats in your chosen time.

You can hop on a bus from Cebu's South Bus Terminal in Cebu City. It is if you want a less expensive but longer route than a direct flight. The earliest trip starts at 5:30 AM and the latest is at 6:00 PM.

Since there's no bridge connecting the main island of Negros Oriental and Cebu, the bus will board a ferry and continue the travel to Dumaguete. The total travel time is around 5 hours and 30 minutes to 6 hours. Don't be shy to ask the bus conductor should you have any concerns during the ride.

You don't have to ride a bus anymore if you're coming from parts of Cebu near Liloan Port in Oslob. Just board the ferry bound to Sibulan Port that will take you an hour and 30 minutes of travel time. From Sibulan Port, ride a 20-30 minute jeep or multicab going to Dumaguete island. Book in advance if you can as there are limited seats during peak hours.

Bacolod is on the southeastern half of the large island of Negros, Negros Occidental. From Bacolod, you can ride a bus direct to Dumaguete. Below is the detailed information, including which bus line you should take.

Go directly to the Bacolod South Bus terminal and look for available buses operated by Ceres Liner . It's the most effective and convenient way without unnecessary stops along the way. Travel time is around 5 to 6 hours. If you can, go to the bus stop 30 minutes before your target time. Seats get occupied quickly, especially during the morning.

Similar to Cebu, Bohol is a vast island region near Dumaguete that you can reach via a quick flight or a ferry ride. Philippine Airlines and Cebu Pacific offer flights at selected times. Ocean Jet Ferry offers ferry rides that are cheap and convenient.

Just make sure to book tickets at least a week for your chosen trip as seats may be bought quickly due to the number of people traveling from Bohol. Make sure to bring all essential documents with you too for fast entry to these transportations.

If you want the fastest route from Bohol, take a direct 50-minute flight from Tagbilaran. Philippine Airlines and Cebu Pacific offer flights going to and from Tagbilaran. Non-stop flights are 50 minutes long while connecting flights are on an average of 4 hours to 5 hours long. Book in advance to get the best seats.

You can ride fast crafts and ferries bound from Tagbilaran in Bohol. Ocean Jet Ferry offers rides going to and from the Tagbilaran port. The travel time takes around two hours. Take note of their policies and requirements before traveling.

Most modes of transportation are accessible and cheap. Compared to other regions, traveling in Dumaguete is pretty straightforward. Depending on your budget and comfort and convenience preference, you can choose from these types of transportation options:

Tricyle in Dumaguete

Fare is cheap, and if you're going around Dumaguete, some even offer exclusive use for tours. Just make sure to have at least an idea on the best route by searching online so you can avoid getting overcharged.

To reach nearby towns, you can head to the Ceres Bus Terminal in Dumaguete City and hop on and off a city bus. Riding a bus is your best option for long-distance travel within and outside Dumaguete.

Bring exact or smaller bills for the fare so the operator won’t have a hard time finding change for your money.

Self-Drive Motorcycle

If you want a more rugged type of transportation, you can opt to rent a motorcycle. This type of transportation is perfect for a short city tour, especially if you're a pair of travelers. You can also rent one but make sure that you know how to maneuver it, especially if you're in a place you're not familiar with.

Ask if you can use a mobile app such as Waze or  Google Maps while driving the motorcycle. They usually have a mobile phone holder you can attach on the motorcycle.

Private Tour Vans

Alternatively, there are plenty of travel agencies that offer private tours in vans to explore an array of activities in Dumaguete. The majority of these tour operators are DOT-accredited, which means their offered tours and services are tried and tested.

It's a good option if you're seeking a hassle-free adventure. All you have to do is focus on your outfits for the day and completing your itinerary.

When in Dumaguete, you have to keep in mind that the most crucial aspect of your itinerary is the place you'll be staying in. If you're going to the beach, it might be best to stay at beach resorts.

If you're going on a sightseeing excursion, it might be best to stay near the city center. It depends on what activities you'll be doing and destinations you'll be going to during your stay in the beautiful province.

This section will discuss the types of accommodations, neighborhoods and areas, and the top accommodations in any budget within the region.

There are a lot of accommodation types in Dumaguete. You have to find one that fits your preference. Consider your budget, the number of people staying, and its proximity to the attractions you're planning to go to.

Make sure to book in advance so you can get the best rooms and deals within the area. Prepare your travel documents such as passport and valid I.D. so you can reserve quickly. Also, expect that most accommodations ask for a security deposit that will be refunded upon check-out.

Island and Beach Resorts or Hotels

If you're looking for a place to stay that has direct access to the beaches, then staying at a resort is ideal. It's the most convenient choice if you're traveling for island and beach trips or diving adventures.

Most offer rooms with beachfront access and have excellent amenities such as Wi-Fi and breakfast. Some even have their indoor pool. There are reasonable hotels that are quite near the city center, providing comfort regardless if you're staying for business or vacation. Most of these hotels offer valet service and 24-hour security.

Vacation Rentals

Homestays are also popular here. Many homeowners work outside the province, which is why they let other people rent their houses during peak season, and sometimes, off-peak season.

It's much better to rent a home if you're in a big group as you get the extra amenities such as a kitchen and laundry area. You might have to pay a security deposit and a cleaning fee, so make sure to ask the owner in advance.

In case you're traveling solo, or you're a group who's into budget-friendly accommodations, don't fret! There are multiple hostels in Dumaguete that are suitable for any budget traveler. Avoid the ones located on far neighborhoods as the commute going to and from the top destinations in the province might be more expensive.

The province of Dumaguete is divided into 30 barangays. However, when you're in the region, you'd mostly be frequenting five towns only, namely: Dumaguete City, Dauin, Bacong, Valencia and Sibulan.

It's essential to be familiar with these areas so you won't get lost. Here are some of the critical information you need to know about these neighborhoods and areas in the province:

Dumaguete City

Often known as the most populated neighborhood in the region, this is where you can find popular establishments for food, shopping, and many more. Nightlife is booming in this neighborhood too.

It's the business and town proper, and the main link to transport in the other cities. Most attractions included in Dumaguete tours can also be found here.

If you're planning to dive to Apo Island, you'll have to go to this neighborhood. It is where Apo Island is, a volcanic island known to have unique rock formations and abundant marine life.

It's also the home of Baslay Hot Springs, a geothermal spring which can be accessed by a short hike through a jungle. Most local and international travelers stay within the area for the mentioned attractions.

Located on the southern part of the coast, it is one of the smallest towns not only in Dumaguete but in the whole Negros Oriental. Most historical monuments are located here, as well as art museums catering to various local and international artists. You can ride a jeepney from the city center going to Bacong.

When you're in Valencia, you will notice that the winds are more relaxed than in the city proper. It's because it's on higher ground. It's the main area for agricultural production in Dumaguete with the abundance of fruits and vegetables. Going here is easy as routes are going directly here from the city center.

It is where you can find Dumaguete's airport. The local seaport is also in this area, as well as other modes of transportation. Although there's no nightlife in the area, it's one of the most highly-developed municipalities in the province. You can comfortably ride a jeep going here from the city center.

Since Dumaguete is known as a budget-friendly destination, there are plenty of accommodations that won't cost you an arm and a leg. But if you're looking for a more upscale temporary home, there are also mid-range to luxury resorts and hotels that you can choose.

When you're in Dumaguete, you’ll be treated to a gastronomic adventure that would let you taste various delicacies unique and famous in the province. It's a good immersion, as you'd be able to know the province's culture through their food.

This section will discuss the province's local cuisine and some of its highly-recommended restaurants. Make sure to try them all if you can!

Your time will be well-spent with feasting in Dumaguete food, especially their three famous food staples: silvanas, fried ice cream, and sans rival. One of the unique cuisines has become their staple food is called "budbod."

It's made with millet seed and rice, similar to " suman ," a famous Filipino rice cake made with glutinous rice and wrapped in banana leaves. Here's your guide to the local food scene.

After learning about their local cuisine, it’s time you try it for yourself. Most of these recommended best restaurants and bars are affordable and located within the city area.

They have a story as to why they are popular with both locals and international travelers. If you’re ready for an exciting food experience, here are some of the food establishments you should go:

Sans Rival Cakes and Pastries

Dumaguete City is known for its delightful silvanas and mouth-watering sans rival. Your trip will not be complete if you don't pay a visit to Sans Rival Cakes and Pastries. It's the place to go for the famous, melt-in-your-mouth, quality silvanas and sans rival that is known for.

If you're looking for something to bring home to your family, Sans Rival Cakes and Pastries' silvanas and sans rival won't disappoint. The store is located in San Jose Street, just a few steps away from Silliman University.

Snap a photo of the sans rival to share with your friends and make sure to tell them how delicious it is!

Sta. Teresa Resto

Sta. Teresa Resto is your budget-friendly option if you're cutting costs but still want to taste quality Filipino food in Dumaguete. It's a self-service restaurant where the selection of home-cooked Filipino food is displayed at the front and customers can have their pick.

The food selection includes pork adobo, which is a pork dish cooked in soy sauce and vinegar.

You can already have two dish variants, two cups of rice, and two bottled water for a low price. It's a great place if you're craving for the kinds of food a Filipino mom would serve at home.

If you're coming from the city center, ride a tricycle to get there. Make sure not to deprive yourself!

Gabby's Bistro

For a casual dining option, check out the quirky ambiance and flavorful dishes at Gabby's Bistro. Setting foot in the restaurant will give you vintage diner vibes that are full of character.

Gabby's Bistro is known for its Filipino dishes and American platters. They offer a variety of food ranging from chicken inasal to pasta dishes and more.

You can try their tomato soup, apparently a tasty cure for a hangover, baconsilog (a fusion of bacon, fried rice, and sunny side up eggs with atsara or pickled papaya) on the side) shrimp scampi for some light lunch, and pizza baguette Hawaiian for a classic pizza with a spin.

Servings are significant, and the price range of meals is not that expensive. There's a  branch of this off-the-beaten-path restaurant along Rizal Boulevard.

Panda Ice Cream Store

Fried ice cream is one of the favorite food items in Dumaguete. Ask any local about where you could find the best of these, and they'll point you to Panda Ice Cream Store.

You can get a taste of this in Ma. Cristina Street, just a stone's throw away from Silliman University's side gate. The composition of the dessert is simple: it's ice cream inside a crispy breaded shell, served fried. One bite and you'll find the ice cream inside is still hard and frozen.

Hayahay Treehouse Bar and View Deck

If you want to dine at a restaurant with a beach view, lively ambiance, and excellent food, Hayahay Treehouse Bar and View Desk has all three. The restaurant has two levels.

The ground floor is where a live band occasionally performs, while the second floor has an open, overlooking ocean view. The price ranges are the same as typical restaurants.

While there, try their Dumaguete Express, a combination of fried pork, coconut strips, and squid in white sauce; and The Sizzling Tanigue, made with brown gravy and potatoes served sizzling hot. From the city proper, hail a tricycle to Hayahay Treehouse and View Deck.

For you to have an exciting time in the province, you need to understand every important aspect of traveling there, such as their currency, language, and safety tips.

It’s a general rule of every traveler going to unfamiliar places. Dumaguete is generally a safe place and its very welcoming to visitors. However, you need to try and blend into their culture as a sign of respect.

The main currency in Dumaguete is the Philippines Peso (PHP). ATMs might be limited, so make sure you have enough cash with you. Take note that smaller bills are better for hassle-free transactions in most establishments. Credit cards might be limited if you’re not in the city proper.

Visayan language, or Cebuano, is the widely-used dialect in the province. Most speak Filipino and English too. If you are more familiar with the two languages mentioned above, they can respond to you as accurately as they can.

Just make sure to enunciate your words carefully and with a neutral accent if possible so they can understand your questions clearly. If you want to learn more about them in the most authentic way possible, download a dialect app on your smartphone.

Dumaguete is a safe place, but just like any other place in the world, it's better to take some precautions. Be alert at all times. As much as possible, don't walk alone on secluded streets, especially at night.

Keep your bags close to you. In case of an emergency, go to the nearest hospital! There are medical centers available within and outside Dumaguete city proper.

7. Old Enchanted Balete Tree

If mystery and mythical creatures pique your interest, head to one of the best tourist spots in Siquijor, the Old Enchanted Balete Tree. The 400-year old tree is less than an hour’s drive from San Juan, located in the town of Lazi at Barangay Campalanas. An exemplary model of neoclassical architecture, the Lazi Church, or San Isidro Labrador Parish Church, is a Baroque Roman Catholic church established by Augustinian Recollects in 1857. It is also a candidate for UNESCO World Heritage Site as one of the Baroque Churches in the country.

Lazi Church

Unlike any other century-old church, Lazi Church is uniquely built with wall coral stones and carved with finishing touches by local artisans. Furthermore, the church features a painted blue ceiling, symmetrically balanced pulpits, original devotional painting, herringbone wood flooring, and marbled floor altar. Lazi Church convent is recognized as one of the biggest convent’s constructed during the Spanish colonial period.

10. Lagaan Falls

Apart from secluded beaches, Siquijor has loads of waterfalls to choose from, and Lagaan Falls, should not be missed. It is located nearby the Old Enchanted Balete Tree and will take half an hour ride from San Juan if you’re renting a motorbike or riding a tricycle. Once on the jump-off point, tourists have to pay a Php 30 entrance fee and charges free for parking.

Lagaan Falls

Credit: manoukvdijken

After paying the entrance fee, it will require trekking down for around 15 minutes through the forest trail, where the stunning Lagaan Falls unveils. The first tier is the biggest and ideal for swimming and has a rope swing for added fun, similar to Cambugahay Falls.

11. Talisay Beach

Located near the town of Maria and Lazi, Talisay Beach is the perfect spot to cool off and avoid the crowd. Although this beach is not known as Paliton Beach, it is still a must-visit for beach bummers featuring white sand and a breathtaking cove. In addition, this is a famous snorkeling spot, so don’t forget to bring your gears.

To reach Talisay Beach, head to a similar route to Salagdoong Beach and venture through the forest trail. Also, it is best to visit this hidden gem during high tide season to avoid walking through rock cliffs and swim easily.

12. Cang-isok House

Lastly, the ideal spot to visit for history enthusiasts, Cang-isok House is another centuries-old structure in the town of Siquijor. Located on the coast of Barangay Libo at Enrique Villanueva town, Cang-isok is a stilt house built in the 1800s and recognized as the oldest surviving ancient house in Siquijor.

Standing strong on the coast of Siquijor, the historical attraction is made from locally sourced materials like bamboo, molave, tugas, and nipa roofs. Although Cang-isok House looks rustic and tattered, it is still a great representation of how locals lived centuries back then. So take the time to drop by at this spot and feel how to live decades ago.

Dumaguete in 3 Days

Tour Itinerary

Dumaguete City is the gateway to the many wonders the province of Negros Oriental has to offer! From the famous snorkeling and scuba diving in Apo Island, mountain trekking in Mt. Talinis and Mt. Kanlaon, to the refreshingly cool waters of Casaroro Falls and Pulangbato Falls. There are way too many things to do and see, and three days is not enough. Don’t worry! We will give you the ultimate travel guide showing the best places to visit in three days. One of the first things you should consider is where you are staying. There are plenty of Hotels in Dumaguete that are budget-friendly and convenient. For bigger groups of family or friends, there are several Dumaguete Guesthouses and Inns you can choose from. If you prefer the luxury of the beach, there are several Beach Resorts in the south.

Getting to Dumaguete City

One of the easiest ways to get to Dumaguete City is by a boat. The Dumaguete Seaport have boats coming in and out to different islands such as Siquijor, Bohol, Cebu and Zamboanga. The port has many ferries going to and from many directions like Manila, Cebu, Bohol, Tagbilaran, Dapitan, Zamboanga, Mindanao and more. Simply check out the Dumaguete Ferry Schedule and get on the next boat! If you prefer flying, there are also a few flight schedules available for entering Dumaguete City. Check out the Dumaguete-Sibulan Airport for flight schedules from and to Manila and Cebu.

Air Asia Airplane - Time and Schedule

If you are coming from the other side of the island, there are buses and vans available that can travel to Dumaguete City. There are also other ports available in the northern part of the province. The Sibulan Seaport and the Amlan Seaport (also known as Tampi) have boats coming in an out from the neighboring island of Cebu.

dumaguete siquijor tourist spot

Like mentioned earlier, there are plenty of tourist spots you can visit. Whether you are a water sport enthusiast or a nature hiking lover , Dumaguete City and Negros Oriental has always something to offer. So, in this article we will spit the three-day tour with what would suit your interests best.

Day 1 – City Tour in Dumaguete

Land or water lover, the first thing you should do is explore the hidden wonders of Dumaguete . Upon arriving in the city and checking in to your hotel, the first thing most travelers do is roam around. Since Dumaguete City is not that big, the city tour can be done in half a day. First is walking up and down the  Rizal Boulevard in the morning and perhaps watching the sunrise. There are plenty of restaurants and cafes along the waterfront. After a quick morning walk, visit the Dumaguete Cathedral and Belfry located near the city plaza. You can either walk from the boulevard or take a tricycle ride for a few pesos only.

Rizal Boulevard Dumaguete romantic view

Both of these tourist spots are rich in history and culture. There are no entrance or admission fee, however, a donation is highly appreciated. You can also light a candle and say your prayers near the Dumaguete Belfry. Small thin candles cost 1 peso only. On the other hand, rosaries, colored candles, crosses, statues, and other items will range in price. Learn more about Dumaguete in a Day, click here .

Day 2 – Swimming with Turtles in Apo island (Ocean Lovers)

Known for its diversity in marine life, Apo Island is known to be one of the best snorkeling and scuba diving destination in the province and in the Philippines. It is home to more than 650 documented species of fish and estimated to have over 400 species of corals. Aside from that, it is also famous for being the home of sea turtles.

Apo Island

The small island has several carinderia and small stores to buy snacks from. However, it is best advised to bring your own packed meals when traveling to Apo Island. If you plan to stay on the island for a night or two, there are a few accommodations like resorts and guesthouses available. Make sure you book in advance!

Getting to Apo Island

If you are staying in a Beach Resort in Dauin or Beach Resort in Zamboanguita , then simply ask if they have a boat trips to Apo Island. Chances are, the resort have their own boats to accommodate your trip. If you are staying in Dumaguete City, one needs to go to the boat terminal in Malatapay Market, Zamboanguita. Get on a bus or jeepney and tell the driver or conductor that your headed to Malatapay Market. Once you get dropped off at the highway, simply walk going to the beach. If you visit on a Wednesday, you will even see the Wednesday Malatapay Market . This is when local vendors from the mountain parts of the province gather to sell their vegetables, fruits, live stocks, and other good for a cheap price. Learn more about boat prices for Apo Island click here .

Day 3 – Dolphin Watching and White Sandbar (Ocean Lovers)

After swimming with the turtles in Apo Island, it is time watch the dolphins! Since dolphins are mostly active in the morning, travelers need to wake up early in the morning in order to see them. It is also best to book your boat ride ahead of time when visiting the dolphins and the While Sandbar of Manjuyod . From Dumaguete City, it takes about 2 hours via a bus to reach Barangay Campuyo in Manjuyod. Form there you can rent a boat for about PHP 3,500. 00 (USD 63), PHP 4,000.00 (USD 70) good for 15 people and Php 5,000.00 (USD 89) good for up to 20 people. Prices may vary depending on the boats available and in the season.

TIP: Buy and bring your own food and drinks, there are no restaurants nearby!

Manjuyod Port - Campuyo Port

Once you get on the boat, all you have to do is sit back and enjoy! The local boat crews will show you when the dolphins will surface . They are also happy to take pictures of you and your family. After watching the dolphins, you can then enjoy the rest of the day at Manjuyod White Sandbar. There are a few house/ cottages in the middle of the sandbar. If you want to book an overnight or day time stay there, get in touch with the Manjuyod Tourism Office. Although there are no restaurants nearby, there are floating stores that will pass by. They will sell fresh coconut juice, sea urchins, oysters, chips, crackers, biscuits, and a few beverages .

Day 2 – Casaroro Falls & Pulangbato Falls

If you are a “land and nature” lover, then trekking to the Casaroro Falls in Valencia is for you! From Dumaguete City, you can take a jeepney ride going to the Valencia Plaza. Then you can either take a pedicab or a habal-habal (motorcycle ride) to the entrance of the waterfalls. There, the real adventure begins. First you have to walk down 350 steps going down the river side. Once you reach the river, you will trek for a few meters in order to reach the waterfalls. The refreshing cool waters of Casaroro Falls strikes 30 meters down into a basin.

Casaroro-Falls-in-Valencia

Pulang Bato Falls & Red Rock Hot Spring

There are plenty of other Tourist Attractions in Valencia . However, if you are up for a less “adventurous” yet beautiful attraction, then the Pulangbato Falls is the place to go! The term “pulang bato” means red rock in the Bisayan dialect. True enough to its name, the Pulangbato Falls is surrounded by red rocks. It may not be as tall as the Casaroro Falls, however, it still offers refreshing cool waters and scenic views of nature. There is an entrance fee of Php 50 (US$1). Tables and chairs are also available inside for rent. A snack bar, restrooms, shower, and parking areas are some of the convenient facilities of the Pulangbato Falls. Over all, you can visit these two waterfalls in one day! If you have time in the afternoon, you can also make a quick stop at the Red Rock Hot Spring (located about a kilometer down from the Pulangbato Falls).

Pulang Bato Falls - Valencia - Negros Oriental

Day 3 – Twin Lakes (Lake Balinsasayao & Lake Danao)

Another great place to visit for nature lovers is the Twin Lakes of San Jose. This tourist spot is named after the two lakes, Lake Balinsasayao and Lake Danao. Out of the two, only Lake Balinsasayao is open to the public. In order to get there, you will need to take a public transportation (jeepney or easy ride) to the main highway going to the lakes. In the intersection, a few habal-habal drivers will be more than happy to take you up the tourist attraction. A big notice board can be seen in the area stating the price for one way and round trip to the area.

Getting to Twin Lakes - Habal Habal Ride

Upon reaching the entrance of the Twin Lakes, the guard and receptionist will ask you to sign in their log book. General entrance fee for Filipino Nationals is Php 50.00. For Non-Filipino Nationals, the entrance fee is Php 100.00. Children (7 years old & below) are free of charge and there are Special Rates for students, senior citizens, residents of Negros Oriental/Occidental (prices may change without prior notice).

What to Do in Twin Lakes?

After that, feel free to roam around in the spacious area. You can also cross the lake via a boat ride that costs Php 250 per hour and can fit 1-7 persons. Swimming is not encouraged in most parts of the lake for safety reasons. Instead, enjoy a boat ride from end to end of the Lake Balinsasayao. Kayaking is also available and will cost Php 150 per hour. The trails are free for easy trekking and hiking. However, for full exploration, one can book a guide for a group of three people for Php 300. Other activities offered in the Twin Lakes are carp fishing and overnight camping, as long as visitors bring their own gear. There is nowhere around the Twin Lakes to rent fishing or camping gear.

Thats Dumaguete in 3 Days!

That’s a wrap! For the nature enthusiast visiting the Philippines, the Twin Lakes is a wonderful place to visit. The hiking trails, clear lakes, and exotic flora and fauna are sure to lift the spirit of anyone who finds peace in the outdoor environment. For ocean lovers, Apo Island and the Manjuyod White Sandbar is definitely a must go. If you are visiting for a longer period of time, try visiting the rest of Negros Oriental’s Tourist Spots .

Safe travels!
