How to Make Fabric Easter Bunny Treat Bags: Quick and Easy

How to Make Fabric Easter Bunny Treat Bags: Quick and Easy

DIY Home Décor Easter Sewing by Lynn Woll

Learn how to make a fabric Easter bunny treat bag with our quick and easy tutorial. No pattern is needed! I’ll show you how to make these adorable treat bags any size you’d like. As we know, treats come in all sizes!

This is a quick and easy project. Make several simple Easter bunny treat bags for spring parties. Or put Easter treats in the bag and place them in Easter baskets!

What are the basic steps for making a fabric Easter treat bag?

  • Determine how big you want your treat bag. I wanted one big enough to fit a monster truck for the special guy in my life, with a few sweet treats, too!
  • If you have a specific item you are making the bag for, measure the diameter horizontally of it and add at least 2-inches. This will give you room around the item and enough fabric for seam allowances.
  • Measure the diameter around the height of your item. Divide in half because we will be cutting the fabric on the fold. Add 2-inches that will be for the tie. Take that measurement, divide it in half, and add it to the previous number. This will be the height of the ears. (See the detailed explanation below)
  • Layer two pieces of fabric with the folded edges aligned that is at least as wide and as tall as your measurements.
  • Cut the width as determined by the horizontal measurement.
  • Fold in half again with raw edges aligned.
  • Starting at the bottom of the ear measurement, cut diagonally from the fold to the raw edge corner.
  • Separate the lining and the body fabrics.
  • On the body fabric, line up the raw edges and sew both side seams with a 1/4-inch seam allowance.
  • On the lining fabric, sew one side seam with a 1/4-inch seam allowance. With the other side seam, sew down from the top and leave a 2-inch opening on the fold. This is where you’ll turn the bag right side out.
  • Now, place the right side of the bag inside the lining with right sides together. Line up the ears and the V along the top edge.
  • Sew all around the top edge with a 1/4-inch seam allowance
  • Turn the bag right side out through the opening
  • Stitch the opening closed. I do this by machine. You can hand stitch this closed.
  • Press and topstitch around the top ears to finish the top edge.
  • Add a tie and fill the fabric Easter bunny treat bag! See some great ideas for ties below.

How can I make a Fabric Easter Bunny Treat Bag a different size?

Treats and Easter gifts don’t all come in the same size. Why would the treat bags be only one size? The small treat bag doesn’t fit Monster trucks! And, treats aren’t just candy.

To make a custom-sized treat bag, measure what you want to put in the bag.

  • Measure the full-width diameter of what you want to put in the bag.
  • Divide that in half. Add 2-inches. This will be the cut width for your fabric. Explanation: The fabric will be sewn together so the cut width will be doubled. We need to account for the depth of your item which is why we take the diameter and divide it by 2. Then, we add 2-inches so there is ease for putting your item in the bag and seam allowances.
  • Now determine the length of your fabric pieces. Measure the diameter of the height of your item. Add 2 inches for ease when tying the ribbon. Example: The diameter height of the item is 12-inches + 2-inches = 14-inches.
  • Next, add fabric length for the bunny ears. My rule of thumb is to use 1/3 of the total length. So, divide the length determined above by half or 7-inches. Cut the piece of fabric 21-inches long.
  • For the monster truck, I cut the fabric 9-inches wide by 21-inches long.

Showing how to size a fabric Easter bunny treat bag

Follow the directions above to make the bag. I did a 2-inch box bottom and made the specialty tie from coordinating fabric and cut it 24-inches long.

Put a little Easter grass in the bottom of the bag and add the treat!

What are some different options for bunny bag ties?

  • The easiest ties are to use a piece of ribbon.
  • One fun idea is a zero-waste project using fabric twine made from fabric scraps.
  • Use lengths of jelly rolls or 2-1/2 inch strips to make coordinating fabric ties with aglet ends.

Make a tie with fabric twine

To make a tie with fabric twine, take your twine and stitch across the twine near where you want to cut it to secure the twist.

Sewing the fabric twine to keep the twist when cut

Sew again about 1/2-inch away. Here is a close-up to show the two stitched lines – look closely!

Close up of the two sewn lines on the fabric twine

Cut the twine between the two stitched lines.

Sew the piece of fabric twine to the back of the bunny bag. Tie it in a bow to secure the goodies.

Try different fabric combinations and have fun!

Make a tie with coordinating fabric and an aglet end

Take a 2-1/2 inch strip of fabric. Fold it in half and press. Fold the outside edges to the inside fold and press. Fold in half to enclose the raw edges and press. Topstitch along open side.

Get two (2) sets of aglets, your topstitched tie and a pair of pliers.

Pliers, aglets and tie

Place aglets on each side of one end of the tie.

Use your pliers to gently close the aglets around the end of the tie.

INSTRUCTIONS:

easter bunny travel bag

We will be making the medium size today

Finished medium sized bag measures: ~9.5  x 4.5 x 3″ (24 x 10 x 7.5cm)

Area to store the treats approximately 4 ½ x 4 ½ inches

Small bunny treat bag:

  • printed outer fabric – 6 x 18″ (15 x 46cm) – quilting cotton is good
  • plain lining fabric – 6 x 18″ (15 x 46cm)

Medium  bunny treat bag:

Large bunny treat bag:

  • printed outer fabric – 10 x 30″ (25.5 x 76cm) – quilting cotton is good
  • plain lining fabric – 10 x 30″ (25.5 x 76cm)

easter bunny travel bag

Fold lining fabric in half, right side together so you have a piece 8 inches by 12 inches.

Place the fold at the bottom of your cutting mat. We are going to mark on the plain lining fabric as it is easier to see the marks.

At the top mark 1/4″ (6mm) in from left and right.

Find the center of the fabric rectangle. To do this use your ruler to measure 4 inches across and 5 ½ inches up from the bottom and mark this point.

easter bunny travel bag

Take your ruler and line it up from the center point to the left hand top corner – keep your ruler at the ¼ inch mark and draw a line with the pencil – this is to ensure you don’t have bunny ears that are slightly rounded and makes turning the fabric easier.

Repeat this drawing a line from the center point up to ¼ inch (6mm) from the left hand corner.

Place the folded lining fabric on top of the folded outer fabric, lining up the edges and putting a few pins in to keep the 4 layers of fabric from moving when you use fabric scissors to cut out the V shape line you drew.

easter bunny travel bag

Remove the pins and separate the folded layers. The lining and the printed outer fabric will have the right sides together. Now, take the lining fabric and mark a 4 inch opening on the right hand side, around 4 ½ inches up from the fold – this is to enable you to turn the Easter bunny treat bag the right way out later. Pin or clip the edges of both lining and outer fabric.

easter bunny travel bag

Stitch down the sides of the lining ¼ inch (6mm) from the edge. Remember to leave that gap open and back tack at the start and finish. Do not stitch across the V shape of the ears.

With the printed fabric pin the folded halves together and stitch right down the sides, ¼ inch (6mm) from the edge back tacking at the start and finish – there is no need to leave a gap on the printed fabric.

easter bunny travel bag

To make the boxed out corners grab the corner at the fold and pull the fabric apart to create a square shape. Flatten and using your quilting ruler measure 1 ½ inches (4cm) in from the corner. To get a straight line use one of the diagonal lines on the quilting ruler to line up with the fold on one side. Use your fabric pen or a pencil to mark a straight line from edge to edge, then use a pin to keep that flattened corner in place.

Repeat on the other side of the treat bag, then move on and do exactly the same with the lining.

easter bunny travel bag

Stitch across the pencil lines back tacking at the start and finish on each side of the outer fabric and the lining, then trim off the excess on the corners – just don’t get too close to the stitch line – about 1/8 of an inch (3mm) away.

easter bunny travel bag

Turn the lining the right way out. Now slip it inside the outer fabric so you have right sides to right sides facing each other.

easter bunny travel bag

Line up the edges and starting with one bunny ear place one seam to the left and the other seam to the right of the stitch line – this avoids having to stitch through multiple layers of fabric and nests the seams. Check so see the stitch lines are directly in line with each other and place a pin to hold in place. Repeat with the other ear.

Line up the outer fabric and lining on the bottom of the V shape of the ears and put in a pin on either side of the bottom of the V to hold in place. Repeat with the other side.

Place pins across the rest of the V on each side so the fabric lies flat.

Stitch the ears ¼ inch (6mm) from the edge. When you come to the V leave the needle in the fabric, lift the presser foot and swing the fabric, depress the foot again and carry on stitching to get a neat turn.

Trim the excess fabric off the tips of the ears taking care not to get too close to the stitch line – we don’t want an Easter treat bag with fraying ears! Also clip the V points

easter bunny travel bag

Turn the whole Easter treat bag through the opening in the lining and carefully push out the ears using a turning tool or chopstick. Fold the raw edges of the gap in line with the seam and press, then, either sew closed using your machine or slip stitch closed.

easter bunny travel bag

Press the edges of the ears, making sure the fabric is turned out.

easter bunny travel bag

Add the pom pom tail either using hot glue gun or by handsewing it to the treat bag,

easter bunny travel bag

Now comes the fun part – putting the treats into the treat bag, cutting a length of ribbon and tying a bow around the base of the ears and making sure the ears are turned a little so some of the lining shows.

If you don’t have a matching ribbon, you can use a fun-colored elastic hair tie or make your own fabric ties out of matching fabric.

Adorable Easter Treat Bags with Bunny Ears – Easy to Sew

As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases

These adorable Easter bunny treat bags are just what you are looking for this year. These Easter bags are just so cute and they are really easy to sew. So, if you create Easter goodie bags each year think about making your bags really special this year (with bunny ears). DIY Easter gifts are always special and you could use these bags for any treats, chocolate eggs, puzzles, small books, etc. You could even make a larger version if you have larger gifts, simply scale it up. So, let’s get started on your Easter gift bags.

You will need:

  • Main fabric piece 26″ by 7″(or 2 pieces 13″ by 7″)
  • Lining Fabric pieces as for main fabric
  • Sewing Equipment
  • Pattern (available free here)

materials needed for bunny ears treat bags

Video Tutorial for Bunny Ears Treat Bags

This video is also available on my YouTube channel .

Prepare your fabric

Print off and cut out your pattern. There is a 1″ square test box to see if it has come out the right size. Size is not crucial so if your square is slightly bigger or smaller do not worry about it. It is just a guide to help you as I know we all use different sized paper around the world. Cut out the two pattern pieces and glue or tape them together so that the rectangular piece meets the dotted line as identified on the pattern piece. Fold your main fabric in half and place your pattern piece on the fabric so that the straight end of your pattern piece is against the fold of your fabric. Pin it in place and cut it out. If you are using a fine fabric pins may damage it. In that case you can use pattern weights to hold your pattern in place. If you want to make some take a look at my pattern weights tutorial. The seam allowance is included so cut directly around the pattern piece. If you have 2 pieces of fabric simply place one on top of the other, pin the pattern piece on and cut around the pattern piece BUT leave an extra 0.5″ where the fold should be. This will be your seam allowance for sewing the two pieces together.

pattern pieces on fabric

Repeat for the lining fabric.

Sew your Bunny Ears Treat Bag

This first instruction is only for you if you could not put your pattern piece against a fold!!

Sew your pieces together

If you have 2 pieces of lining fabric and 2 pieces of main fabric this step is for you. Take your two main fabric pieces and place them on top of each other with right sides facing. Pin and sew along the straight edge directly opposite the bunny ears. Repeat for the lining pieces. You will now have two pieces of fabric, one main fabric and one lining. It will look as if you worked using a fold in your original fabric except you have a seam in the middle of your pieces.

Sew your Main Fabric and Lining together

Place your main fabric piece and lining piece directly on top of each other so that the right sides are facing each other. Pin or clip them together. You need to leave a gap of 3″ to 4″ on one long straight side so I recommend marking that in some way now using your pins or clips. Then sew around the shape using a 3/8″ seam allowance (approximately) making sure you leave your gap for turning the shape out. Clip the corners off and snip into the curves so that when you turn it out you do not have too much bulk and you curves will lie flat.

bunny ears Easter bag sewing and clipping seams

Turn out your Bag Piece

Turn your bag piece out through the hole that you left. Make sure that you carefully poke the corners and the tips of the bunny ears out. I use a chopstick for this but a blunt pencil can also work well. Press your bag piece carefully. Then sew up the hole that you left. You can simply pin or clip the two edges together and machine sew it closed (it will be inside your finished bag) or you can slip stitch (ladder stitch) the two edges together to form an invisible seam.

slip stitching turning hole

Complete your Bunny Ears Easter Treat Bag

Now to finish your Easter DIY gift bag. Simply fold your piece in half so that the lining fabric is on the outside and pin or clip along the straight edges. Sew them in place.

Easter treat bag sewn

Turn the bag out and poke out the bottom corners. You have finished your Easter treat bag. All you need to do now is add your Easter treats and fasten the bag by using a half bow to fasten the two ears together.

  • Use a bright fabric for the lining to get bright bunny ears.
  • Decorate the bag pieces before starting sewing (eg add a bunny face)
  • Use clips and pattern weights for fine fabrics
  • Make different sized bags for different sized gifts

I hope that you have really enjoyed making your bunny ears Easter treat bags. They are so much nicer than a plastic bag or basket. This website has a whole section of sewing tutorials for you to have a go at so please take a look and hopefully find something you would love to make. If you are looking for more Easter makes then I recommend trying some cute Easter bunnies that you hand sew out of felt – you can create a whole family!
