How to turn on and edit the Favorites bar in Safari
A few weeks ago, I received a panicked call from my sister. "My Favorites are gone! I don't know where they went and I don't know how to get them back." The favorites in question weren't Instagram likes or Twitter stars — no, her new work Mac had come with its Bookmarks favorites bar disabled.
It's not uncommon to see this in new OS X Yosemite Macs; Safari's default view sports as few buttons and switches as possible, so as to immerse yourself in the Web browsing experience. But it's an easy fix to reenable the Favorites bar and even edit it.
How to turn on and edit the Bookmarks bar in Safari
Turning the Bookmarks or Favorites bar on is a relatively simple process.
- Open Safari .
- Select the View menu
- Find Show Favorites Bar
(If you like keyboard shortcuts, you can also use Command-Shift-B to show or hide the bar.)
How to add new sites to your Favorites bar in Safari
Once your Favorites bar is visible, there several ways to add new sites and folders to it.
The easiest way to add a website is to drag its icon from the status bar to the Favorites bar; you'll see a green plus button to let you know it's safe to drop it onto the bar.
You can also add or edit favorites by doing the following:

- Select the bookmarks icon .
- Open the Favorites section by clicking on the arrow.
- Click Edit .
Inside the Bookmarks editing screen, you can add folders to group bookmarks together, or simply drag bookmarks from their current location into the Favorites toolbar.
How to quickly edit your Favorites bar in Safari
If you'd prefer not to launch the full Favorites editor, you can tweak your favorites in a few different ways.
Rename them or their website: Want a different name for your new bookmark or need to update the address? Control-click (or right click) on a bookmark in the Favorites bar and select Rename Bookmark or Edit Address .
Delete: Don't want a bookmark on your Favorites bar anymore? Just drag it off the toolbar and it'll disappear in a cloud of pixel smoke.
Copy for later: Need to share an address with someone? Control-click on a bookmark and select Copy to save it to your clipboard.

Thanks for this info. So How do you MAKE a custom icon for your bookmark favorites toolbar in Safari?
Yes, I know about “favicons” and copy/past emojis from iChat or such into the toolbar from “Edit Bookmarks.” I have a bunch up there already. But if you have, for example, an organization with a logo, that makes more sense to show than having or abbreviating “Acme Plastics Composite and Recomposting Development Technologies Of the Puget Sound” or even “APCRCFTPS”… How about just the logo? That saves an enormous amount of real estate. How do you do that? No article even mentions anything about “customization” except how to move stuff around your toolbar. Thanks!

Bookmarking pages on Safari, the default browser for Mac computers , can help you navigate online with ease. But it's easy to go a little overboard and end up with so many that you have a difficult time finding the ones you need. That's when adding favorites can come in handy.
Another positive to using Favorites is that, on Safari, those show up in new tabs, making it extremely easy to access them. Here's what you need to know to add your Favorites on Mac and start taking advantage of this time-saving Safari tool.
Check out the products mentioned in this article:
Imac (from $1,099 at apple), how to add favorites on a mac using safari.
Your Favorites should consist of whichever the sites you find most useful. This could be the ones you use the most, or the ones you only use to pay a monthly bill (but want to keep at the front of your mind). It's all up to you.
1. Open Safari and navigate to the site you want to add to your Favorites.
2. In the top toolbar, select "Bookmarks" and then "Add bookmark" (Or press Command + D).
3. In the pop-up, make sure the dropdown says "Favorites" and then click "Add."
You'll be able to find those favorites within that same "Bookmarks" section of the top toolbar. They'll be in a folder at the bottom of the dropdown menu labeled "Favorites."
How to edit or delete favorites on a Mac using Safari
If you want to delete a site from your Favorites, simply open a new tab, find the icon for that specific Favorite, right click on the icon, and select "Delete." You can also rename the icon, like changing it from the site name to something more recognizable, in case that's easier.
You can also rearrange your Favorites by dragging the icon to wherever you want it to live on the page.
If Safari isn't your browser of choice, you should still be able to add bookmarks, if not Favorites. But the process will likely look different, so you may have to look around in the settings a little bit.

How to Manage Bookmarks and Favorites in Safari on Mac: A Complete Guide
Bookmarks and Favorites in Safari help you keep track of your favorite sites and visit them instantly. Here's how to master them.
Bookmarks and Favorites in Safari are easy ways to keep track of interesting sites you want to visit again later and your favorite sites you visit often. Bookmarks and Favorites have similar, but slightly different, purposes.
Use bookmarks to save links for sites you want to visit again later. Use Favorites to store links to a select few sites you visit often or every time you open Safari.
We'll explain how to manage your bookmarks and Favorites in Safari so you can make the best use of them and keep them organized.
Managing Bookmarks in Safari
Browser bookmarks can quickly get out of hand, especially if you bookmark a lot of sites. So it's a good idea to start organizing your bookmarks into folders early on to keep them under control. But it's never too late to get organized. It just might take a while if you have a large, unorganized collection of bookmarks.
How to Create Bookmark and Favorites Folders
Before adding a bookmark for a site, create a folder to put the bookmark in. First, click Show sidebar , or press Cmd + Control + 1 .
Make sure the Bookmarks button is selected (blue) at the top of the sidebar. Either right-click or Control -click anywhere in the sidebar and select New Folder .
Your Favorites are at the top of this sidebar and you can also use this method for creating Favorites folders.
Enter a name for the folder and press Enter .
To create a new folder in the Bookmarks editor, click New Folder in the upper-right corner of the page.
If you want to add multiple existing bookmarks to a new folder, select the bookmarks and hold down Option as you click New Folder . The selected bookmarks are added to the new folder that you can rename as mentioned above.
How to Add Bookmarks
To add a new bookmark and customize the name, description, and location, click the Share button in the upper-right corner of Safari. Select Add Bookmark .
This enters a default name for the bookmark based on the website title. But you can change the name if you want.
You can also add an optional description for the bookmark, which helps you remember why you bookmarked a page in the first place.
The first time you add a bookmark in Safari, the default folder is Favorites . We'll talk about adding Favorites later. For now, we're going to add the bookmark to the new folder we created above.
Select the folder from the Add this page to dropdown list and click Add . The folder you select becomes the default folder next time you add a bookmark.
To quickly add a bookmark, move your mouse over the address bar. Click and hold the plus icon on the left side of the box.
Select a bookmarks folder from the dropdown list. Safari adds a bookmark with the default name of the page to the selected folder. We'll show you how to edit a bookmark later.
You can also add the page to your Favorites by selecting Favorites or a Favorites folder.
How to Move and Copy Bookmarks and Folders
If you already have a bunch of bookmarks , you can organize them into folders or rearrange them.
Drag the bookmark to a folder or another location on the sidebar. To copy a bookmark instead of moving it, hold down the Option key while you drag it.
This method also works for rearranging Favorites.
How to Rename Bookmarks and Folders
To rename a bookmark or folder, right-click or Control -click on an item in the sidebar and select Rename . You can also force-click to rename. To do this, click and hold on the item until its text highlights.
If you're in the Bookmarks editor, select the bookmark or folder you want to rename, and press Enter .
Enter a new name or change the current one, and press Enter to accept your changes.
This also works for renaming Favorites.
How to Edit the URL for a Bookmark
Safari contains a Bookmarks editor that allows you to edit and delete your bookmarks and Favorites. Go to Bookmarks > Edit Bookmarks .
Use the same method we described for renaming bookmarks to change the Address for a bookmark or Favorite. The editor also allows you to edit Website names, but you can't add bookmarks or Favorites in the editor.
How to Edit the Description for a Bookmark
You might want to add descriptions to your bookmarks, so you know why you saved the link to that page. If you forgot to do that for some of your existing bookmarks, you can edit their descriptions.
You can only edit the description for a bookmark on the sidebar, and only if the bookmark is in a folder. This is another good reason for putting bookmarks into folders.
To edit the description for a bookmark, double-click the folder containing the bookmark on the sidebar to expand it. Then, Control -click the bookmark you want to edit and select Edit Description .
The description is highlighted, allowing you to enter new text.
How to Delete Bookmarks
If your bookmarks are cluttered, you may want to delete old ones you don't use anymore.
On the sidebar, either right-click or Control -click the bookmark you want to delete and select Delete .
To delete multiple bookmarks, Cmd -click the bookmarks and press the Delete key.
You can also click and hold on the bookmark's name until it's highlighted. Then click the X to the right of the name.
Both methods also work for deleting Favorites.
How to Search Through Your Bookmarks
If you have a lot of bookmarks, you might find it hard to locate a certain one, even if you've organized them into folders. Thankfully, Safari allows you to search through your bookmarks.
Enter the text you want to search for in the search box at the top of the sidebar or in the upper-right corner of the Bookmarks editor. On the sidebar, you might have to scroll up to see the search box.
Results of the search display as you type. Click on the bookmark to open the page in the current tab.
To clear the search and go back to the full list of bookmarks, click the X button on the right side of the search box.
How to Import Bookmarks From Chrome or Firefox
Have you switched to Safari from Chrome or Firefox ? You can easily import your bookmarks from either browser into Safari.
Go to File > Import From > Google Chrome or File > Import From > Firefox . Check the Bookmarks box on the dialog box and click Import .
You can do this at any time, even if you've imported bookmarks already.
Safari is smart enough to know which bookmarks you've already imported from Chrome or Firefox. So if you import bookmarks again, you'll only get new ones you added to the other browsers. Or if you've deleted some bookmarks you imported, you'll get those back the next time you import.
The bookmarks and folders from Chrome or Firefox are imported at the root level on the sidebar. Use the methods we covered above to rename and rearrange bookmarks and folders, edit descriptions, or delete any imported bookmarks you don't want.
How to Import Bookmarks From an HTML File
You might want to import your bookmarks into a separate folder automatically, so you can keep them separate from the bookmarks you already had in Safari.
You can accomplish this by importing bookmarks from an HTML file, which you can export from Firefox or Chrome. See our guide to exporting Chrome bookmarks for info on this.
Go to File > Import From > Bookmarks HTML File . Then select the HTML file you want to import and click Import .
The imported bookmarks are put into a folder titled Imported with the current date.
Managing Favorites in Safari
The Favorites bar sits just below the address bar at the top of the Safari window. It provides quick access to sites you visit often.
You can only specify one web page as your homepage. But what if you want to open multiple pages every time you open Safari? You can add your favorite pages to your Favorites and have quick access to them when you open Safari.
How to Show the Favorites Bar
Safari stores favorites on the sidebar and in the Bookmarks editor, as we showed you earlier. You can also access them on the Favorites bar.
If you don't see the Favorites bar under the address bar, click Toggle the favorites bar on the toolbar, go to View > Show Favorites Bar , or press Cmd + Shift + B .
Only a certain number of sites will fit on the Favorites bar, so it's best to limit the number of pages you add to your Favorites.
How to View the Favorites Page on the Current Tab
If you want to view and access your Favorites as thumbnails, you can open the Favorites page on the current tab. Go to Bookmarks > Show Favorites .
If you don't see Show Favorites as the first option on the Bookmarks menu, you must make a change in Safari's settings . Go to Safari > Preferences . On the General screen, select Favorites from the New windows open with popup menu.
Your Favorites are available as thumbnails on the current tab.
How to View the Favorites Page on a New Tab
If you want access to Favorites page when you open a new tab, go to Safari > Preferences .
On the General screen, select Favorites from the New tabs open with popup menu. New tabs will now display the Favorites page, which includes Frequently Visited sites at the bottom. We'll show you how to hide the Frequently Visited sites section later.
How to View Favorites From the Smart Search Box
Use the Smart Search box, or address bar, as a quick way to access your Favorites page without leaving the current web page.
Click in the address bar to open the Favorites in a popup window. Then click the icon for the page you want to visit. The Favorites popup window goes away and the selected page opens on the current tab.
How to Change the Bookmarks Folder on the Favorites Page
By default, the Favorites page shows all your Favorites and the folders under Favorites. But you can change this to show only the Favorites in a Favorites folder or a folder of bookmarks.
Go to Safari > Preferences . On the General screen, select the folder you want to view from the Favorites shows popup menu.
The selected folder displays when you open the Favorites page on a new tab or from the Smart Search box.
How to Show/Hide Frequently Visited Sites in Favorites
If you don't want to see Frequently Visited sites at the bottom of the Favorites page, you can hide them.
Go to Bookmarks > Show Frequently Visited in Favorites . When the option does not have a check mark in front of it, you won't see the Frequently Visited sites on the Favorites page.
How to Open Your Favorites in Tabs When You Open Safari
If you visit the same pages every time you open Safari, you can add these pages to your Favorites and have them open in separate tabs when you open a new window.
To do this, set up your Favorites using the methods described earlier. Then go to Safari > Preferences .
On the General screen, select Tabs for Favorites in the New windows open with dropdown list.
Keep Track of Your Favorite Pages in Safari
Safari already offers great tools in the bookmarks and Favorites features. And they'll help you keep your favorite and important pages organized.
But if you want other options for managing your bookmarks, you can look through some great Safari extensions for bookmark management .

How to customize Favorites in Safari on Mac, iPhone, and iPad
By Charlie Sorrel • 12:00 pm, July 5, 2017
- Top stories
Whenever you open a new window or tab in Safari, you’ll see a view showing a grid of your favorite sites. But what if those Favorites aren’t actually your favorites? What if the default Favorites are useless to you, and you want to have a different set of sites appear in a new tab instead?
That’s why were here today. We’ll see how to customize the Safari Favorites in both iOS and macOS , while leaving everything else, like the bookmarks bar, intact.
What are Safari Favorites exactly?
By default on iOS, the Favorites sheet is populated by your — you guessed it — Favorite bookmark folder. This is the folder that contains the bookmarks you add to Safari’s bookmarks bar. However, it’s easy to change this for a more useful folder.
Why? Well, what if your bookmarks bar is full of fancy bookmarklets that you use to translate pages, add sites to Pinboard, or clear away pesky popups ? Those are perfectly suited to the bookmarks bar, because they’re accessible with one touch, but not so useful in a new tab, where they’ll do nothing.
No, what you want in a new browser window or tab is a page of your most-visited sites: the forums you frequent, the page with the details of class times at your yoga center, the page with the opening hours of you local chiropractor — that kind of thing. I have a folder called Mobile for this, and I use it as my “home page” on Mac and iOS. Here’s how to set it up on both.
Setting your Favorites page on macOS
This one’s easy. Fire up Safari, go to Safari>Preferences in the menu, choose General , and check out Favorites Shows . This is the pop-up menu where you can choose any of your bookmarks folders to use in the Favorites view.
You also need to make sure that the New windows open with: and New tabs open with: are set to Favorites
Now you’re done. Bonus tip: You can rearrange all the bookmarks in the Favorites view just by dragging them with the mouse.
Setting your Favorites page on iOS
On iOS it’s even easier, although instead of opening Safari you open the Settings app, and head to Settings>Safari . In there you tap the line for Favorites , and then select your desired folder in the list.
That’s it. It’s super easy. You can also rearrange icons in iOS Safari in the same way, by dragging them around in a new tab.
Setting a custom Favorites folder can be very useful. Bookmark folders sync between Mac and iOS, so you can have identical Favorites everywhere. But you can also have different Favorites on your iPhone, iPad, and Mac, and you can easily switch Favorites, keeping a set for home and a set for work. And as you’ve seen, changing the folder used by Favorites takes seconds. Go try it now.

Adding Favorites to Safari on a Mac is a useful way to keep frequently-used websites within easy reach. There are some websites that users need to open almost every day and having them in Favorites makes them easy to access with a single click. With Favorites, users can even bookmark specific documents and spreadsheets which they might otherwise need to dig into their email to find. For users who have other Apple products like an iPhone or iPad, signing in to the same Apple ID used on the Mac will sync their Favorites across all devices.
Safari has several useful features, and Apple recently introduced a few new ones with macOS Monterey. Among these is the new 'Compact' tab experience which combines tabs with the search field, increasing the space on the browser. There's also Tab Groups, which lets users organize tabs into groups and name them. For example, all work-related tabs can be grouped under 'Work' for easier access. The Sidebar has also received a design refresh, now displaying Tab Groups, Shared Links, Bookmarks, and Reading Lists.

Another way to add a website to Favorites is by clicking on the website address in the search field and then dragging it down to the Favorites view. A third way to add Favorites is by clicking on Bookmarks in the Safari menu bar and then on Add Bookmark . From the window that appears, select Favorites from the drop-down and click Add . To remove a Favorite website, can click and hold the website icon from the Favorites view and then drag it into the toolbar to delete it from the list.
Organizing Favorite Websites On Safari
For users who like to keep things nice and tidy, Safari has some handy tools to organize Favorites. After clicking on the search bar and opening the Favorites view, users can drag individual website icons to rearrange the order in which they are displayed . Favorites can be renamed by Control-clicking the website and then selecting Rename from the shortcut menu. Alternatively, users can click on Bookmarks in the Safari menu, and then on Edit Bookmarks . Right-clicking on any saved website brings up the option to rename it.
The websites displayed in the Favorites bar can also be changed to any other Bookmarks groups. With the browser open, click on Safari and then Preferences . Click on the General tab and select the bookmarks that should be displayed from the Favorites shows drop-down. If a Safari user wants to keep their Favorites on display permanently, there's an option to do that as well. In the Safari menu, click on View and then select Show Favorites Bar to make it appear above the tabs list.

To delete favorites in Safari on a Mac, open Safari, click on the ‘Bookmarks’ menu, select ‘Edit Bookmarks,’ click on the favorite you want to remove, and press the ‘Delete’ key on your keyboard. It’s that simple! Now, let’s dive deeper into the process and its implications.
After completing this action, the selected favorite will be permanently removed from your bookmarks list. This action cannot be undone, so make sure you want to delete the favorite before doing so.
Introduction
Deleting favorites in Safari on a Mac might seem straightforward, but there’s more to it than just hitting the delete button. Favorites, also known as bookmarks, are a nifty feature that allows us to save our most visited websites for easy access later on. They help save time and make our browsing experience smoother. But as time goes on, our interests change, and our favorite’s list can become cluttered with sites we no longer visit. That’s when the need to tidy up arises.
Knowing how to manage your favorites confidently ensures that your Safari browser remains organized and efficient. This task is especially relevant for those who use their Mac for work or spend a significant amount of time surfing the web. It’s also important for individuals who share their device with others and want to keep their browsing preferences private. Let’s help you get your digital space in order by learning how to delete those no-longer-needed favorites.
Step by Step Tutorial on How to Delete Favorites in Safari on a Mac
Before we start, know that following these steps will help you declutter your Safari browser by removing unwanted favorites.
Step 1: Open Safari
Open the Safari application on your Mac.
Opening Safari is the first thing you need to do. You can find it in your ‘Applications’ folder, on your ‘Dock,’ or by using ‘Spotlight Search.’
Step 2: Access Bookmarks
Click on the ‘Bookmarks’ menu located at the top of your screen, then select ‘Edit Bookmarks.’
This will take you to a list of all your bookmarks and favorites. Here, you’ll see everything you’ve saved over time, organized by folders if you’ve categorized them that way.
Step 3: Select Favorite
Click on the favorite you wish to delete.
Be sure to select the correct favorite. If you have a lot, you might have to scroll to find it. If it’s in a folder, click on the folder first to reveal the contents.
Step 4: Delete Favorite
- Press the ‘Delete’ key on your keyboard.
Once you press ‘Delete,’ the favorite will be removed instantly. Remember, this action is not reversible, so be certain you want to remove it.
Additional Information
In the realm of digital tidiness, managing your Safari favorites is akin to cleaning out that one junk drawer we all have at home. It’s easy to toss in various items (or in this case, websites) thinking you’ll need them later, only to forget about them entirely. Over time, this digital clutter can become overwhelming, making it hard to find the favorites you do use regularly.
Here’s a tip: organize your favorites into folders by category. This not only makes them easier to find, but also easier to manage. You can create folders for work, personal, shopping, research, or whatever suits your browsing habits. Then, when it’s time to declutter, you can tackle one category at a time, making the task less daunting.
Also, remember that deleting favorites in Safari on your Mac might not remove them from other Apple devices if you have iCloud Safari syncing turned on. So, if you’re looking to clean up across all devices, you’ll need to ensure you manage your bookmarks within iCloud as well.
- Open Safari.
- Click on ‘Bookmarks’ and select ‘Edit Bookmarks.’
- Find and click on the favorite you want to delete.

Next to the "arrows", on their right side, there is another icon, a rectangle divided vertically. This rectangle is the "sidebar" icon.
3 - Click on the sidebar icon. It will open the sidebar on your browser and there are three options on top: the first one is for "Favorites" , the second one is for "Bookmarks", the third one is for "Shared links".
4 - Click on the "favorites" icon: it will turn blue.
5 - Select the webpage you want to delete from the "Favorites" by pressing the "command" key on your keyboard and mouse-clicking (or trackpad-clicking) on the item of the "Favorites". Release both the command key and mouse (or trackpad).
6 - Press the "delete" key that has a little black arrow right to it. This should delete the item from "Favorites".

I have just acquired a replacement imac which runs Sonoma, and want to remove some of the favourite links in Safari, which I will probably never use. Right clicking and 'delete' no longer works on this platform. Any advice appreciated. TIA.

Separate Your iPhone Browsing Habits With Safari Profiles
With iOS 17 , Safari gained a feature called Profiles that's designed to help you separate your browsing sessions into categories like Work, School, Personal, or custom categories that you find useful to have siloed. This article explains how to use it on iPhone .
Each profile gets its own icon and silos all of your history, Tab Groups, Favorites, Private Browsing tabs, and cookies. You can even assign specific third-party extensions to different profiles to optimize your browsing experience based on the task at hand. Here's how to create your own profile in Safari.
How to Create a Safari Profile
- Open the Settings app on you iPhone or iPad .
- Scroll down to Safari .
- Under the "Profiles" section, tap New Profile .
- Under "Settings," choose a Favorites folder (or a new folder) and select which tabs (if any) that you want to be open when you're using the profile with the Open New Tabs option.
When you create a new profile, your device will automatically generate a "Personal" profile to differentiate other browsing sessions conducted outside of the profile you created.
Both profiles and additional ones you create can be edited in the same section of the Settings app. When editing an existing profile, you can also enable any Safari extensions you have installed on your device with the Manage Extensions option, as well as get rid of the profile using the Delete Profile option.
How to Switch Between Profiles in Safari
- In Safari, tap the Tabs icon with two overlapping squares.
- Tap the middle icon to bring up the active profile's menu.
- Tap the Profile option to change which profile is active.
The Safari Profiles feature is available in iOS 17, iPadOS 17 and macOS Sonoma , as well as being part of Safari 17 for macOS Monterey and macOS Ventura . Any profiles you create will be synced across devices logged into the same Apple ID .

Unfollow Everything lawsuit could change the way we use social media apps
A court is being asked to decide whether or not Meta has a legal obligation to allow the use of Unfollow Everything – a browser tool which effectively empties your Facebook feed.
The idea behind the tool is that instead of being sucked into an effectively endless feed of posts from every friend, group, and page you have ever followed, you get to proactively choose the posts you read …
Unfollow Everything
Wired reports that the original version of the tool was created by British developer Louis Barclay. He said that unfollowing everything, but remaining friends with everyone in his feed, and staying in all his groups, meant that using Facebook became a deliberate act, rather than an endless time-suck.
I still remember the feeling of unfollowing everything for the first time. It was near-miraculous. I had lost nothing, since I could still see my favorite friends and groups by going to them directly. But I had gained a staggering amount of control. I was no longer tempted to scroll down an infinite feed of content. The time I spent on Facebook decreased dramatically.
Meta wasn’t happy, and permanently banned him from the app, claiming the tool breached the company’s terms of service.
Unfollow Everything 2.0
An academic researcher has developed a new version of the tool, and wants to be able to study how it impacts their Facebook usage. Do they spend less time using the app, for example, and does it increase or decrease their satisfaction with it?
But he can’t do that if Meta bans the tool, so University of Massachusetts–Amherst associate professor Ethan Zuckerman has filed a pre-emptive lawsuit asking a court to rule that this would be illegal.
Section 230 of the Communications Decency Act is best known for allowing social media companies to evade legal liability for content on their platforms. Zuckerman’s suit argues that one of its subsections gives users the right to control how they access the internet, and the tools they use to do so. “Section 230 (c) (2) (b) is quite explicit about libraries, parents, and others having the ability to control obscene or other unwanted content on the internet,” says Zuckerman. “I actually think that anticipates having control over a social network like Facebook, having this ability to sort of say, ‘We want to be able to opt out of the algorithm.’”
Legal experts have mixed views on whether the case will succeed.
9to5Mac’s Take
Social networks started out as something designed to add value to our lives, giving us additional ways to connect with family and friends, but for many have ended up having the opposite effect – leading people to spend too much time glued to a screen, or creating curated versions of their own lives which present a misleading impression that everyone else is having a better time.
Personally, I last year made a conscious decision to significantly cut back on my own social media usage. I did a limited version of what this tool does – unfollowing a bunch of people and groups without disconnecting from them. That gave me a much shorter feed, while still allowing me to check in on particular friends or groups when I choose to.
I also made a deliberate decision not to begin using any new social networks unless and until they replaced – rather than added to – the two I already use.
For me, that’s been a very positive thing in my life. Unfollowing everything might be an extreme version of this, but I do rather like the idea of starting with a blank sheet and then adding people and groups back into my feed on a considered basis. I hope the suit succeeds, and is subsequently expanded to other social networks.

What if the OLED iPad Pro’s ‘one more thing’ is the Apple Pencil’s obvious AI twist?
If you buy through a BGR link, we may earn an affiliate commission, helping support our expert product labs.
Apple will finally unveil its 2024 iPad lineup that so many people have been waiting for. I know I’m excited about one particular model, the 11-inch OLED iPad Pro , though I will wait for Apple’s iPadOS 18 demos at WWDC to decide whether or not I buy one. Others might be eying the 13-inch iPad Pro or one of the two iPad Air 6 variants that Apple is expected to unveil on Tuesday. And many will buy a new iPad as soon as preorders open.
BGR already told you that a Pro version of the Apple Pencil might be the big surprise at the end of Apple’s iPad event. But that was before Apple dropped a huge teaser on its website. The Apple logo was briefly erasable; you only needed to hover your mouse over it. This was a hint that the next-gen Apple Pencil might get some sort of new gesture to support erasing content across apps. But that’s not the only angle, considering that we’re in the age of generative AI.
An Apple Pencil Pro with erasing capabilities would be the tool to use on the iPad to edit images. And since Apple won’t unveil its genAI software novelties until iPadOS 18, I wonder if Apple might drop a cheeky “one more thing” demo at the end of the event to tease the AI features coming to the iPad Pro this fall.

The Apple Pencil’s new trick
Let’s remember that Apple’s event announcement focused on the Apple Pencil:
Pencil us in for May 7! ✏️ #AppleEvent pic.twitter.com/1tvyB7h450 — Tim Cook (@tim_cook) April 23, 2024
That’s a great trick to change the narrative somewhat ahead of the event. After all, most rumors talked about the OLED panels and the M4 chips coming to the 2024 iPad Pros, not the Apple Pencil.
The “one more thing” teaser
I’m not a fan of altering photos with AI to make them look like something that never happened in real life. That’s taking things too far. I do see value in being able to perform small edits. So what if Apple’s erasable logo is a teaser that generative AI features are coming to the iPad soon?
Then again, Apple can’t unveil the full suite of genAI features coming to the iPad Pro this year. Yet it has to convince people to buy the more expensive iPad Pro before it even unveils iPadOS 18. That’s where the “one more thing” announcement at the end of the reportedly short media event could come in handy, especially if the OLED iPad Pro is getting the M4 chip.
Apple working on genAI photo-editing software
Speculation aside, Apple Insider says that people familiar with Apple’s software development say the company is already testing generative AI for editing images in the Photos app.
Clean Up reportedly lets you change the brush size to remove specific objects from the image. That way, you can move between smaller and larger objects. Removing objects means the AI would have to fill the gaps in the image with content matching the rest of the photos. Such AI-based editing features are already available from different genAI products, including Google’s Android operating system.

Google photos competition heats up as apple photos readies ai features.
Apple's updated Photos app might use generative AI for editing images
- Google Pixel's popular Magic Eraser feature, which removes photobombers from pictures, might soon have a rival in Apple's ecosystem.
- Rumors suggest Apple could introduce a similar AI-powered feature called "Clean Up" in its Photos app.
- A recent interactive teaser for Apple's "Let Loose" event, which allowed users to erase parts of the Apple logo, has sparked speculation, hinting at new AI editing features coming to iOS 18.
One of the best features of recent Google Pixel models is the Magic Eraser tool , which lets you wipe out photobombers from your favorite shots. This handy feature works on both new and old photos, erasing unwanted distractions without messing up the background. It made its way to iPhones and non-Pixel Android devices last year , but there's a new rumor that Apple might roll out its own AI-powered photo editor in the Apple Photos app, designed to perform the same tricks.
Apple's latest teaser for its "Let Loose" event scheduled for Tuesday got everyone scratching their heads. AppleInsider first noticed the change when the Apple logo became interactive, letting users play around and erase parts of the logo with their mouse. The outlet thinks this hints at new AI editing features in iOS 18. Then again, it might just be a way to hype up the rumored new Apple Pencil.
Sources told AppleInsider that the Cupertino-based company might soon give us a sneak peek of a new photo editing feature called "Clean Up," which will supposedly be released on a new version of the Photos app. Expected to launch later this year, this tool uses AI to delete objects from pictures and make other quick edits, similar to Google Photos ' AI skills.
The best Magic Eraser alternatives
It was reportedly spotted in a test version of MacOS 15, nestled in the Photos app's Edit menu, along with other tools for adjustments, filters, and cropping. According to AppleInsider, the new Clean Up feature in Apple Photos for macOS is set to replace the existing Retouch tool.
The iPad Pro might gain some AI-powered editing skills
There's a chance iPads might get a similar AI editing upgrade too, allowing for AI-powered edits on the move. People testing the feature have reportedly been able to tweak the size of the "brush tool," making it easier to select and remove both smaller and larger objects.
Apple's event today is all about new iPads, and rumor has it that the company might unveil a brand new Apple Pencil. There's also talk that Apple might show off what the new stylus can do with some AI photo editing.
An earlier report from Bloomberg suggested that the company might unveil a new iPad Pro with the M4 chipset, equipped with a revamped neural engine designed to handle AI features. The rumored AI feature could be a glimpse of things to come, but we might also have to wait until WWDC 2024 in June for the full reveal.
