Happy 350th birthday, Jonathan Swift. Widely recognised as the leading satirist in the history of the English language, Swift found his way into the world 350 years ago on November 30, 1667. Celebrations of his life and legacy have been underway across the globe – not only in his home city of Dublin but also Philadelphia , Münster , Yokosuka City , Dundee and beyond.
Gulliver’s Travels is Swift’s most famous work. Since it first appeared in 1726, it has captivated readers, authors and artists alike. But many people’s engagement with this astonishing book tends to get lost in fantastical images of scampish little people and baffled giants. So here is your cut-out-and-keep guide to all things Gulliver.
1. Not really a children’s book
Most readers will fondly remember Gulliver as a children’s book, but the unexpurgated version is full of brutality. The ruthlessly logical Houyhnhnms – highly intelligent horse-like creatures – plan to wipe out the bestial humanoid Yahoos by castrating them all. This plan is inadvertently inspired by Gulliver’s description of how horses are treated in England.
There is a particularly unsavoury scene in the Lilliput voyage where Gulliver urinates on the queen’s home to quench a devastating fire. This is routinely included in the children’s edition, albeit in sanitised form. And then there’s the scene in one of Gulliver’s final adventures where our hero has to fend off a highly libidinous female Yahoo who appears intent on raping him.
2. Coining new words
Gulliver’s Travels has given the English language a number of notable words, not least Houyhnhnm (move your lips like a horse when saying it). There’s also Yahoo, an uneducated ruffian; brobdingnagian, meaning huge, after the giants in the second voyage; and lilliputian, meaning small, after the miniature humans of the first voyage.
Swift also loved puns. Lindalino, a most unusual place, is another name for Dublin (double “lin”). The flying city of Laputa is a harsh allegory of England and its colonial dominion over Ireland – the name means “the whore” in Spanish (la puta). As for the kingdom of Tribnia, it is an anagram of Britain. Its residents call it Langden, an anagram of England.
3. Roman à clef
Like any successful satirist, Swift had many enemies. Britain’s first prime minister, Robert Walpole, is recreated as Flimnap, who as the pompous Lord High Treasurer of Lilliput has an equivalent role in their society. Either the Duke of Marlborough or Earl of Nottingham is the inspiration for his war-hungry governmental counterpart Skyresh Bolgolam, the Lord High Admiral of Lilliput.
Other authority figures are roundly mocked throughout the book. The pettiness of politicians – Whigs and Tories alike – is compellingly conveyed by rendering them small. That moment where Gulliver urinates on the palace is sometimes interpreted as a reference to the Treaty of Utrecht of 1713, which ceded Gibraltar to the UK – and by which the Tories put out the fire of the War of Spanish Succession with some very ungentlemanly conduct.
4. Big in Japan
Konnonzaki in Japan, just south of Tokyo, is a tourist delight. In addition to stunning mountains and beautiful beaches, it is thought to be where Gulliver first set foot in Japan – represented as the port of Xamoschi.
Local tourist associations in neighbouring Yokosuka City hold a Gulliver-Kannonzaki Festival every November. American sailors from the Yokosuka Naval Base dress up as Gulliver and parade around the district. In the first Godzilla movie, the monster also lands at Kannonzaki, then heads toward Tokyo – just like Gulliver.
5. Gulliver goes Martian
The book jokingly mentions the presence of moons around Mars. After Phobos and Deimos were discovered by astronomers in 1872, Swift crater on Deimos was named in the Irishman’s honour.
6. Swifter things
Before the advent of film, Gulliver appeared in stage adaptations, musical rearrangements, visual caricatures – and on fans, pots and various other knick-knacks. Pioneering French illusionist Georges Méliès directed and starred in the first cinematic adaptation in 1902, the spectacular Le Voyage de Gulliver à Lilliput et Chez les Géants.
Yet it’s the live-action version from 1977 with its Disneyfied Lilliputians that tends to stick in our minds. That film features an ebullient Richard Harris as Gulliver, but many other actors have portrayed him – including Jack Black , Ted Danson and Vladimir Konstantinov . Gulliver even appeared in a 1968 Doctor Who serial ( The Mind Robber ) and in the first volume of Alan Moore’s comic The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen (1999-2000).
7. Inspiring other writers
Writers expressly influenced by Gulliver’s Travels include HG Wells (most obviously in The Island of Dr Moreau and The First Men in the Moon) and George Orwell (Animal Farm). Margaret Atwood’s adventure romance Oryx and Crake takes a quotation from Swift for an epigraph. Atwood has also written an important essay on the mad scientists depicted in Gulliver’s third voyage.
In Ray Bradbury’s Fahrenheit 451, the main character, Guy Montag, alludes to the Big Endian-Little Endian controversy about the proper way to break a boiled egg (“It is computed that 11,000 persons have at several times suffered death rather than submit to break their eggs at the smaller end”).
8. Gulliver’s encores
Our notional hero’s life ends unhappily – by his own account – when he returns home to a wife and children he has come to loathe. Nevertheless, scores of secondary authors keep taking Gulliver on yet more journeys, typically beyond the world Swift created for him, but sometimes back to where it all began.
The earliest of these was the anonymously authored Memoirs of the Court of Lilliput , published less than a year after Gulliver took his first bow. More recently, a 1965 Japanese animated film (right) took an elderly Gulliver to the moon – along with a new crew comprising a boy, a crow, a dog and a talking toy soldier. New countries, new planets, new companions, new adventures: Gulliver has had a busy afterlife.

Discover Croatia & Slovenia (Multi country)
Overall it was a very good tour. I wish we had more time in each place and my biggest issue was that some of the hotels were far away from the city center so it was more challenging to do things in the evening. But overall the guide was excellent and the people were lovely.
Dalmatian Highlights Split and Dubrovnik Region Cruise (Deluxe Boat Category)
We had a fantastic trip! The boat and cabin were very uncomfortable, the food was great, crew very friendly, met super people and the stops in towns -- particularly Kacula, Trigor and Havar -- just beautiful and a lot of fun.
Grand Balkan Tour (Multi country)
Our trip was marvellous and that was all due to our excellent tour guide. She took the time to explain the cultures of each country we visited. She was not hesitant to point out differences between certain cultures and what these differences had led to over the distant past and into the 21st century. The hotels were excellent in every way. We bonded as a group and made many friendships.
Meet the Balkans Through Croatia, Bosnia and Serbia (Multi country)
This was one amazing tour! This part of the world is so incredibly rich in culture, history, and beauty. Every single stop on this journey was another step into incredible things to see and do. I could never have done this on my own with all the multiple border crossings and the first rate accomodations lined up by Gulliver Travel. A special thanks to Ivana for making it all happen....your the best!

The tour was excellent and certainly good value for money. Accommodation was also good value and comfortable. Woynot hesitate to recommend this trip to others, actually I already have.
Dalmatian Highlights Split and Dubrovnik Region Cruise (Standard Boat Category)
Dubrovnik and Split, Private Tour
This was an insightful, fun and memorable tour. Dubrovnik and Split just are stunning to all your senses. The tour guides we had for both locations were locals born and bred in each city. They were a wealth of information and surprised with some fun facts. Included transfers were great and on time. Gulliver Travel were very responsive with communications, prior, during an post the tour with any queries I had.

Best of Croatia 11 Days, Self-Drive
Overall good. The only issue was lack of free parking at some hotels In Zagreb had a pay a large amount to park the car at the airport, which did not need until we left Zagreb 2 nights later. While parked outside the hotel some locals deliberately scratched the hire car with a key or screw driver. It would have been much better if the hire car was delivered to hotel the morning that we departing Zagreb
Highlights of Croatia with Plitvice, Self-Drive (Multi country)
Alles perfekt organisiert.

Reviews of Gulliver Travel Tours
I (34F) took this tour with my parents (65) and we loved it! Their initial plan was to take a roadtrip through Slovenia, Croatia, and Montenegro, but doing it by themselves without speaking the language seemed like it could be problematic, and this turned out to be so much better. Everything exceeded my expectations, including accommodation and meals. The local tour guides in each city were great, most were upbeat, insightful, and patiently answered ALL questions with a great attitude. Most of all, Blanš (hope I'm spelling it right), our main guide throughout the whole trip, was incredibly helpful and added significant value with her local and archeological knowledge (her tour of Diocletian's Palace was definitely a highlight). The only issue I can point out is a small detail with the tour description. I booked this tour instead of others because it said the max group size was 36, which was not the case. However, I don't feel like it ended up being a problem at all and the group was managed well, so although the information was incorrect, I'm glad I booked this one instead of others. Overall, I would definitely recommend it!
Wonderful guide! Amazing tour!

VILLA HOLIDAYS WITH OLIVER'S TRAVELS
Our love affair with villa holidays first began in 2003 when Co-Founders Oliver and Ravi spent a week at a crumbling chateau in the Dordogne with a group of their closest friends. As fate would have it, that holiday was the start of something special. It was the beginning of Oliver’s Travels.
Our hand-picked villa s , chateaux and holiday homes are located across the top holiday destinations – with new regions launching every year. You can learn more about how we hand-pick our properties .
With a villa holiday, you’ll be free from the constraints of staying in a hotel; there will be no more staring at the same four walls or waking up at the crack of dawn to bag a sun lounger. A self-catering villa holiday opens up a whole realm of new possibilities; enjoying your own private pool , modern kitchens that were made to be used and enjoyed (if not by you, by our incredible chefs !); terraces with panoramic views and gardens where the kids can be kids without the disapproving looks. Exclusivity, privacy and spac e unlike any other accommodation - it’s the holiday dream come true. And also ideal for large groups !
Before deciding on the where to rent a villa, it’s important to consider what you want from your villa holiday. Is it to relax around the pool, dining al-fresco with a spot of sightseeing? Or you are looking for an action-packed trip? Whatever you decide, it’s a good idea to put your requirements at the forefront when discussing with the travel experts in our Concierge team who are the best in the business and have countless awards to match. Trust us, we'll find you the perfect villa holiday to surpass your expectations.
And the best part? Once you book a villa holiday, the service doesn't stop there. Our Free Concierge Service means you'll be in good hands to arrange catering & fridge stocking , housekeeping , childcare , t ours & activities and so much more, to make your stay truly extraordinary.

Muslims worldwide celebrate Eid al-Fitr in the shadow of Gaza's misery
Aptopix malaysia eid al-fitr.
ISTANBUL (AP) — Muslims around the world celebrated the Eid al-Fitr holiday Wednesday, marking the end of the holy month of Ramadan. But events were overshadowed by the worsening crisis in Gaza and Israel’s expected military offensive in Rafah city after six months of war.
“We should not forget our brothers and sisters in Palestine,” one imam, Abdulrahman Musa, said in Kenya's capital, Nairobi. “They have been subjected to unjustified aggression and a lot of violence (as) the world is watching in silence.”
In a holiday message, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan sent support to Gaza, which he called a “bleeding wound on the conscience of humanity.”
In Istanbul, some of the thousands of worshipers at the Aya Sofya Mosque carried Palestinian flags and chanted slogans in support of residents of Gaza, where the United Nations warns that more than a million people are at threat of imminent famine and little aid is allowed in.
Inside Gaza, there was little joy. Palestinians in the refugee camp of Jabaliya near Gaza City mourned loved ones among the over 33,000 killed in Israel's offensive in response to Hamas's deadly Oct. 7 attack in Israel.
Om Nidal Abu Omeira sat alone among bombed-out buildings and wept on the grave of her mother, son-in-law, and grandson. All were killed in Israel's offensive.
“They (the children) keep saying, ‘I miss my father, where is he?’ I tell them that he’s in heaven,” she told The Associated Press. “They start crying, and then I start crying with them.”
Elsewhere, people were grateful for the plenty they had after a month of fasting and reflection. Before the holiday, markets around the world teemed with shoppers. Residents poured out of cities to return to villages to celebrate with loved ones.
In Indonesia, the world's most populous Muslim nation, nearly three-quarters of the population were traveling for the annual homecoming known locally as “mudik."
“This is a right moment to reconnect, like recharging energy that has been drained almost a year away from home," said civil servant Ridho Alfian.
Jakarta’s Istiqlal Grand Mosque, the largest in Southeast Asia, was flooded with devotees. Preachers in their sermons called on people to pray for Muslims in Gaza.
“This is the time for Muslims and non-Muslims to show humanitarian solidarity, because the conflict in Gaza is not a religious war, but a humanitarian problem," said Jimly Asshiddiqie, who chairs the advisory board of the Indonesian Mosque Council.
In Berlin, worshipers reflected the world, coming from Benin, Ghana, Syria, Afghanistan and Turkey.
“It’s a day where we feel grateful for everything we have here, and think and give to those who are poor, facing war and have to go hungry,” said Azhra Ahmad, a 45-year-old mother of five.
In Pakistan , authorities deployed more than 100,000 police and paramilitary forces to maintain security at mosques and marketplaces.
In Malaysia, ethnic Malay Muslims performed morning prayers at mosques nationwide just weeks after socks printed with the word “Allah” at a convenience store chain sparked a furor. Many found it offensive.
Malaysia’s Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim called for unity and reconciliation, saying no groups should be sidelined based on religion or any other reason.
In Russia, worshipers gathered as their leaders vowed loyalty to fellow citizens amid tensions following last month’s attack by an extremist group on a music hall outside Moscow in which 130 people were killed. The Islamic State group’s Afghanistan affiliate claimed responsibility.
“As our country’s president, Vladimir Putin, said, terrorism has neither a nationality nor a religion, the chairman of the Council of Muftis in Russia said. “We call to unite against the threat, against those dark forces.”
Karmini contributed from Jakarta along with Associated Press journalists around the world.

Want to take an affordable vacation in 2024? You’ve come to the right place. Although travel costs are on the rise this year ( up 3.1% ), it’s still possible to save money in 2024—if you know where to go.
A new travel report from the U.K.’s Post Office —a British-based mail and financial services company — has just unveiled some of the most budget-friendly destinations for 2024. And although the annual report is aimed at U.K. travelers, it’s a helpful list for Americans, too.
By analyzing currency strengths, local prices and essential tourist expenses in 40 popular vacation destinations around the globe, the Holiday Money Report 2024 highlights some of the cheapest places to travel. The report ranks the destinations based on a barometer that takes the local price of eight tourist essentials into consideration—including coffee, beer, cola, wine, water, sunscreen, insect repellent and a three-course meal. And while the report doesn’t include factors like hotels and airfare, it helps give a good sense of where your dollars will stretch the furthest.
This is the 18th year that the Post Office has done this report. And the good news: Prices have fallen since last year in 25 spots on the list. (A note that the original report included prices in pounds sterling, which have been converted into dollars here, using the exchange rate on the date of publication of 1.26.)
An aerial view of Hoi An, Vietnam, the most affordable destination to travel in 2024, according to a ... [+] new report.
Leading the list as the cheapest place to travel right now is Hoi An, Vietnam. According to the Post Office report, a total estimated cost of just $64.51 a day for the travel essentials makes this charming gem the ultimate bang-for-your-buck destination that won’t break the bank. Located on the central coast of Vietnam, Hoi An entices visitors with its UNESCO -recognized Ancient Town, a picturesque spot where lantern-lit streets lead to quaint shops and street food stalls. It is also convenient to stunning white-sand beaches—some of the most beautiful in Asia .

Best 5% interest savings accounts of 2024.
Following closely behind in the second spot is Cape Town, South Africa, where an outlay of $68.48 a day for the essentials promises an unforgettable experience against the backdrop of Table Mountain and pristine coastlines. Here, you can dive into the vibrant culture and indulge in world-class dining (a three-course meal for two people averages less than $44.140) without denting your travel fund.
The coastline of Mombasa, Kenya, with a pair of camels on Diani Beach.
Mombasa, Kenya takes the third spot on the list. This beachfront destination on the east coast of Africa beckons with its white-sand shores, vibrant markets and rich Swahili heritage, offering an immersive experience for travelers seeking both relaxation and cultural exploration.
In a surprising twist, Tokyo, Japan—a bustling metropolis where tradition meets modernity—secures the fourth spot on the list. According to the Post Office, just $74.43 a day is needed for essential tourist purchases. Helping drive this ranking was the cost of a glass of wine (an average of only $4.56) and a bottle of water (averaging 77¢).
The cliffs of the Algarve overlooking the Atlantic Ocean above the Benagil cave in Lagoa, Portug.a
Rounding out the top five is the Algarve in Portugal, which combines culture, history and natural beauty at a fraction of the cost compared to previous years. With its sun-drenched beaches, charming villages and delectable seafood, the Algarve offers an idyllic escape for travelers seeking an affordable yet enriching getaway.

Eid holiday tradition spurs Indonesia's economy as tens millions of Muslims travel home
The Eid al-Fitr holiday marking the end of the Islamic holy month of Ramadan was celebrated by Muslims on Wednesday with family reunions, new clothes and sweet treats.
In Indonesia, the world's most populous Muslim nation, nearly three-quarters of the population were traveling for the annual homecoming known locally as “mudik” that is always welcomed with excitement.
“Mudik is not just an annual ritual or tradition for us,” said civil servant Ridho Alfian, who lives in the Jakarta area. “This is a right moment to reconnect, like recharging energy that has been drained almost a year away from home.”
Alfian lives in the Jakarta satellite city of Tangerang and was traveling in a van with his four family members to his hometown in Lampung province at the southern tip of Sumatra island, despite severe traffic congestion starting to occur on major thoroughfares.
Before the Eid al-Fitr holiday, markets teemed with shoppers buying clothes, shoes, cookies and sweets. People poured out of major cities to return to villages to celebrate the holiday with their loved ones. Flights were overbooked and anxious relatives weighed down with boxes of gifts formed long lines at bus and train stations for the journey.
The Indonesian Chamber of Commerce and Industry said the financial turnover during the Eid holiday this year will reach nearly $10 billion and cross sectors including retail, transit and tourism.
For Arini Dewi, a mother of two, Eid al-Fitr is a day of victory from economic difficulties during Ramadan. “Eventually I'm happy in celebrating Eid holiday despite surge of food prices,” she said.
Former Vice President Jusuf Kalla was among Jakarta residents offering prayers at the Al Azhar mosque yard. “Let’s celebrate Eid al-Fitr as a day of victory from many difficulties... of course there are many social problems during fasting month of Ramadan, but we can overcome it with faith and piety,” Kalla said.
On the night before the holiday, called “takbiran,” Jakarta residents celebrated the eve of Eid al-Fitr by setting off firecrackers on streets that were mostly empty as city residents traveled home.
On Wednesday morning, Muslims joined communal prayers shoulder-to-shoulder on the streets and inside mosques. Jakarta’s Istiqlal Grand Mosque, the largest in Southeast Asia, was flooded with devotees offering the morning prayers.
Preachers in their sermons called on people to pray for Muslims in Gaza who were suffering after six months of war.
“This is the time for Muslims and non-Muslims to show humanitarian solidarity, because the conflict in Gaza is not a religious war, but a humanitarian problem," said Jimly Asshiddiqie who chairs the advisory board of the Indonesian Mosque Council.
