Overall rating

Our quide, Dexter was excellent. He was very thoughtful and professional. He made an otherwise rainy, gloomy day a fun day. The tour gave us a great overview.

Perfectly organised day, from communication prior to the day to everyone involved in sny part of the tour. The guide was great, hugely knowledgeable and interesting. The helicopter trip was perhaps the most incredible ... thing I have ever done. The ground crew were superb and the pilot made it the best trip ever. After waiting 30 years to do this tour it didn't disappoint. Could not recommend it highly enough.

Good tour, but you can't schedule nature

The timings and organisation of the tour were good. We were picked up from the airport and taken to see the Volcano National Park sites with a good guide who kept us informed and was accommodating of our needs. Unfortuna ... tely you can't schedule nature and we didn't see any volcanic activity apart from a little steam, but it was still interesting, especially the lava tube. We had a helicopter tour with Blue Hawaiian Helicopters to finish off with, but I will not review that part, I will review their admin however. We really wanted a copy of the video of our flight as it was for a 50th birthday, but due to a technical difficulty could not get it at the time. We were told to just drop them a line, but after several emails and calls, still nothing - very disappointed in them.

Oahu to Hilo: Helicopter & Volcano Adventure Tour

Difficulty rating.

Easy to Moderate

Minimum Age

Activity time, tour duration, what's included, description.

Explore the Big Island by land and air with the Oahu to Volcano: Land & Helicopter tour package. This tour does (almost) all the planning for you, including booking your island-hopping flights. Once you arrive at the Hilo airport you’ll be whisked away and taken to all the Big Island hotspots - waterfalls, Volcanoes National Park, steam vents, a lava tube, and so much more. Then, once you’ve seen the best of the Big Island from the ground, it is time to see that stunning volcanic landscape from the air!

helicopter tour from oahu to big island volcano

Getting there: You’ll be booked on an early morning flight from Honolulu to Hilo, usually the first flight of the day. Ground transportation to and from the Honolulu airport is not included, but all transportation once on the Big Island is included.

Land Tour: You will be picked up by your driver/guide shortly after your arrival at the Hilo Airport for a full day of sightseeing. The order of tour stops can vary, but typically the morning starts with waterfalls, including a stop at Rainbow Falls and a visit to Akaka Falls State Park where you will take a short walk through the rainforest to view the towering 442-foot Akaka Falls. Next, you will be taken to Hawaii Volcanoes National Park where you will enjoy a picnic lunch and get to explore the park for the afternoon.

Volcanoes N.P. is home to both Kilauea and Mauna Loa volcanoes. Kilauea is one of the most active volcanoes on Earth. You’ll visit the Halema’uma’u Crater, which is located in the main caldera at its summit, some nearby steam vents, and even hike through Nahuku/Thurston Lava Tube. Your guide will also take you for a scenic drive along the Chain of Craters Road and stop at the Kealakomo Overlook for a panoramic coastal view.  As your land tour draws to a close, your driver will return to Hilo and take you back to the airport – but the best part of your trip is yet to come!

Helicopter Tour: Once you’ve explored Hawaii Volcanoes National Park from the ground it’s time to check it out from above. The helicopter tour is a fully narrated, 55-minute flight from Hilo to the park – featuring spectacular views of both Kilauea and Mauna Loa.

You will be flown over Halema’uma’u Crater at Kilauea’s summit and the nearby Iki Crater. Weather permitting, you’ll also be flown over the base of Mauna Loa, the world’s largest active volcano. You’ll get to view this massive volcano from above and be shown the remnants of its latest eruption in 2022. You’ll also enjoy a bird’s eye view of Hilo and the rugged terrain, lush rainforests, waterfalls, and black sand beaches that the Puna district is known for.

You’ll be flying in an Airbus EcoStar or A-Star helicopter, which are both state-of-the-art helicopters specifically designed for scenic tours. Not only are these helicopters known for being safe and comfortable, but they also provide the smoothest ride and great views for everyone onboard. The use of aviation grade noise canceling headphones and two-way microphones is also included – to ensure that communication with your pilot is crystal clear.

helicopter tour from oahu to big island volcano

Getting home: You’ll arrive back at the airport with plenty of time to grab a bite to eat before your early evening return flight to Oahu. Guests typically arrive in Honolulu between 7 and 8 pm, though this is always subject to change. Transportation from the airport to your accommodations is not included.

Know Before You Book

Tour highlights are subject to change without notice and may vary at tour driver discretion in order to take into account National Park Service advisories, weather advisories, traffic advisories, road closures and detours, and venue hours of operation.

120 hours notice of cancellation prior to airport meeting time is required for a full refund; no-shows will incur a full charge. This extraordinary island is truly bursting with life and there’s no better way to witness its beauty and majesty than from the sky! Our Big Island helicopter tours take you on epic sightseeing adventures—from the steep coastal cliffs and ancient settlements of the Waipio Valley to the jaw-dropping lava fields of Hawaii Volcanoes National Park.

About Your Tour

Kilauea Volcano has been erupting for over 30 years, continuously. On the Big Island rising above the rainforests of Puna is Kilauea Volcano. Sometimes shrouded in low rain clouds, it’s not that visible. Like many of the secrets of Hawaii, it doesn’t look like a treasure hidden from view. But, yet there it is, spewing molten lava at a rate that is adding square miles to the coast of the Big Island. Discover Hawaii Tours Volcano Tours give you a couple different options to see this spectacle up close and in person.

Helicopter Tour + Private Hawaii Volcanoes National Park Tour

The Big Island Volcano Helicopter Tour from Oahu is a Private Tour

This private tour begins with a flight to Hilo, Hawaii. From here it differs from any activity in Hawaii. Blue Hawaiian Helicopters Circle of Fire flight is just on the other side of the tarmac. The flight lifts up from the heliport flying over Akana Falls on the out skirts of Hilo. Akana Falls is the largest and most spectacular of any waterfall in Hawaii. You will see it from above as it roars down to a deep pool with a zipline racing across its face. The flight veers east towards Kilauea and you can see it looming, smoking, and pushing lava out of its main vents from afar. The helicopter tour of Kilauea takes you not over the caldera, but also follows the stream of lava as it slowly works its way down the slopes, pouring into the ocean. You will witness the power of Kilauea as its lava rages as it meets the cool waters off the coast. Steam plumes rise hundreds of feet into the sky, you can scratch seeing an active volcano off your things to do in Hawaii. The helicopter tour of the volcano is a 45-minute flight. Once you arrive back at the heliport the tour resumes with a drive up to the Kilauea Crater. Fern tress crowd the road on both sides as you rise up the flanks of Kilauea. Once in the National Park your tour visits the Jagger Museum, the Puu Vent Crater and a host of other sites along the rim of the volcano. Volcano House, is a restaurant overlooking the main caldera. Its windows have a direct view into the crater where it all began. Here a no host lunch is offered. The journey continues around to the coast where you can walk on lava flows to view where the lava comes out to dump in the ocean. This is the single most breathtaking sight in Hawaii. Relish the moment. Winding your way back to the airport, the tour makes several stops depending on the season. Some stops may include a coffee plantation, mac nut orchards and a fern tree forest. Out of all the tours in Hawaii, regardless of the island, this is the most exciting of them all. Take a day and explore the active volcano on the Big Island and you will have memories that will last a lifetime. The bus used for this tour is a large one. The tour consists of guests from both Oahu and Maui. It’s a very popular activity and advanced reservations are required.

  • Shandent 0 contributions 5.0 of 5 bubbles Great Trip but DON'T sit in the last row of the van. We had a wonderful trip, however, we regret being the last family to be picked up because the only seats left were at the back of the van. Sitting in the back of a 15 seater van wasn't the best on a road filled with one switchback after another. My husband, daughter and I were nauseous for much of the trip:( Other than that the driver of our tour did a fantastic job of explaining the history of the areas we stopped at, chose all the best stop sites (with actual plumbed restrooms not the porta potty's) and knew all of the vendor sites we would enjoy (coconut ice cream, banana bread, chocolate, etc.). Having a driver allowed us to all see the sites instead of one of us keeping our eyes on the road. That was nice...just get picked up first. If you are adventurous, however, you can easily do the trip on your own and save $300 Can per person. It was quite a costly 8 hour trip. Yes it would have felt more "worth it" if we hadn't been so nauseous. Read more Written March 22, 2024

Hawaii Volcanoes FAQs

As of 2023, there are 6 Hawaii volcanoes that are considered active. And the Big Island of Hawaii is home to 4 out of those 6. The active volcanoes on the Big Island include Kilauea, Mauna Loa, Mauna Kea, and Hualalai. The remaining active volcano is Haleakala on Maui. There is also a volcano off of Big Island’s coast that is underwater too!

Unless the volcanoes are actively erupting, you will not be able to see lava in Hawaii. Kilauea last erupted in December 2020.

While you won’t die if you quickly touch the lava, you will definitely get a horrible burn. I definitely don’t recommend it!

It depends on traffic, but it usually takes about 2 hours if you don’t make any stops. There are a lot of cool places to see along the drive from Kona, so I suggest planning for 3-4 hours to take in some sights along the way.

Usually, the best way to see the volcano in Big Island is to go on a Hawaii volcano tour! You can also enjoy some self-guided tours if you prefer to go at your own pace to view these active volcanoes.

The best volcano tours take you to see the Kilauea volcano and help you to explore Volcanoes National Park. There are even some that take you to some black sand beaches and take you on a day trip all around the island of Hawaii.

If you want to see the red, hot lava glow, then you will want to go very early in the morning or after it gets dark under the night sky. However, there are plenty of other awesome things to explore at the Big Island volcanoes, so you can visit any time you want!

Where to Stay in Volcano Hawaii

Now that you know what to do at Hawaii Volcanoes National Park, let’s talk about accommodations. There are tons of options for places to stay in Volcano Hawaii for all price points.

Unless you want to go camping, the only place to stay inside Hawaii Volcanoes National Park is the Volcano House Hotel . It’s a historic Big Island hotel that is super convenient for exploring the park. And it’s great for exploring Hawaii Volcanoes National Park with kids !

Otherwise, your best bet is to stay at a vacation rental in Volcano Village. Some of my top picks include Hale Sweet Hale (featured on HGTV), At the Crater’s Edge , and Volcano Hideaway Hale (also seen on HGTV).
