Happiness with a hobby horse tour

Happiness with a hobby horse (Kepparilla kuoharille in Finnish) tour is a guided tour in the city center of Helsinki, a place to show up to unknown people... during this tour your team will ride in the park and streets with a hobby horse, so the question is: ARE YOU BRAVE ENOUGH TO RIDE?

The tour ends with a glass of sparkling drink in the park.  Our trendy horses and hobby reindeer are high quality handmade products from Finland, and the tour price includes the rent of the hobby horses. After the tour you can of course buy the horse to bring it home!

This tour is aimed especially to "mothers suffering of frustrations" and our medicine includes a lot of visibility and happy faces in the center of Helsinki.

Hobby horse riding is a competition sport in Finland, and it can also be found in United Kingdom, as Prince William just got his own horse from Finland.

helsinki hobby horse tour

Hobbyhorse riding and competitions are a growing subculture among teenage girls in Finland: enthusiasts make, care for, and ride their make-believe ‘horses’ or rather ‘stuffed heads on a long pole’. Hobbyhorses are painstakingly looked after, with some even residing in their own makeshift stables. Many girls find refuge in their hobbyhorse community, but this practice is not without struggle: hobbyhorse enthusiasts are often subject to ridicule, and some keep their passion a secret. The freedom and happiness found in mounting their ‘horses’ is the antidote to any backlash. Read more on Thehobbyhorse.fi

With their perfectly made play horses, decorated with brilliant strips and imaginative adornments, these youthful equestrians charm the crowd with their adjusted developments and very much practiced schedules. From painting and writing to daydreaming, we can express ourselves in unique and meaningful ways. So, let's take this journey and discover the exciting realm of hobbyhorse, where we can bring our enthusiasm and ideas to life!

A blend of colors and shapes allows us to think outside the box and nurture our creative instincts. The world of hobbyhorse provides the perfect platform to bring our ideas to life and share our passion for these majestic creatures. With the crafting of horse-inspired decorations and gifts, we can personalize our surroundings and inject a little creativity into our daily lives. So, let's pick up our paintbrushes, gather our materials, and embark on this creative journey!

Unleashing our creative side is not only limited to grand gestures or elaborate projects. We can infuse our routines with a touch of creativity and transform mundane tasks into an opportunity for self-expression. From finding joy in arranging flowers to experimenting with new recipes, every small act of creative expression nourishes our soul and keeps our imagination alive. So, let's embrace the power of creativity in our everyday lives and unlock a world of inspiration and joy!

The magic of color, form, and imagination is truly remarkable. By combining these elements, we can craft beautiful visual expressions that captivate and engage our senses. Color has the power to stir emotions and set the atmosphere, while shape provides framework and definition. Together, they bring our creative visions to life. Imagination, however, is the cornerstone of every artistic journey. It allows us to explore new ideas, think unconventionally, and break the boundaries of what is possible. By harnessing the power of colors, forms, and imagination, we can ensure that our creative expressions are not only aesthetically pleasing but also meaningful.

Color has the remarkable ability to communicate and stir emotions. From vibrant and energetic shades to soft and calming tones, each hue has its own unique power. By carefully selecting and combining colors, we can create powerful visual compositions that convey our message or evoke desired feelings. Shapes, on the other hand, offer structure and form. Whether it's the gentle curves of nature or the sharp angles of modern design, shapes give our creations a visual identity. By manipulating different shapes, we can add depth, symmetry, and visual interest to our works of art. And lastly, imagination is the key that unlocks the full potential of colors and shapes. It allows us to leave the beaten path and discover new possibilities. Imagination encourages us to think beyond the known, pushing us to create something truly unique and innovative. So, make sure to unleash your imagination, take advantage of the power of colors and shapes, and unlock your creative potential.

Unleashing creativity in everyday life can be a transformative experience, and the key to unlocking it lies within ourselves. Developing the right mindset and taking the initiative to step outside of our comfort zones are essential steps in uncovering our hidden potential. By embracing imagination and exploring different avenues, we can tap into a source of inspiration that can lead to a more vibrant and fulfilling existence.

To foster creativity, it is important to create a conducive environment. Surrounding ourselves with inspiring elements such as artwork, books, and plants can stimulate our senses and motivate us to think outside the box. Additionally, dedicating a specific time of day for creative activities, whether it is just a few minutes or a larger chunk of time, can make all the difference. By setting aside time to prioritize creativity, we give ourselves permission to explore and experiment, creating new ideas and perspectives.

Unlocking creativity can also be achieved by nurturing curiosity. Asking questions and seeking answers can open us up to a world of possibilities. Developing curiosity can be done by engaging in activities such as reading, attending workshops, or simply observing the world around us. This allows us to gain insight and discover innovative solutions to everyday problems. With the right mindset and willingness to explore, we can unlock creativity in daily life.

Innovation springs from the kindling of imagination. To break free from the box, to generate novel and productive ideas, is what creativity is all about. It's not just limited to the realm of musicians and painters; problem-solving in the workplace and personal expression in everyday activities can be exercises of creativity. This capacity to innovate propels us forward and opens up unforeseen possibilities. With creativity, the common is transformed into something extraordinary and the everyday is given a touch of enchantment. To unlock your full potential and enthusiasm, it is essential to cultivate and embrace creativity. To your advantage, foster creativity.

Fostering a Creative Spirit

Art and imagination are inextricably linked, and discovering ways to cultivate and encourage your creative side is essential. Experimenting with various art forms and mediums is one way to stimulate your creativity. Trying out painting, sculpture, photography, or digital art can open up new perspectives, allowing you to view the world through a fresh lens. By experimenting with different artistic expressions, you can increase your artistic knowledge and draw inspiration from various styles and techniques.

Adopting a growth mindset is another way to nourish creativity. This involves being open to new concepts, embracing challenges, and perseverence in the face of difficulties. When you regard failures as learning experiences, you can step outside of your comfort zone and discover groundbreaking solutions. A growth mindset encourages you to take chances, explore novel approaches, and consistently progress as an artist.

Exploring nature is also an excellent way to nurture creativity. Spending time outdoors, surrounded by the beauty of the natural world, can stimulate your imagination and prompt fresh ideas. Whether you take long strolls in the woods, sit by the ocean, or simply observe the intricacies of a flower, nature has a way of inspiring amazement and curiosity. By connecting with the sights, sounds, and textures of the natural world, you can access an infinite source of creative motivation.

Finally, seeking out collaboration and feedback from others can be instrumental in boosting creativity. Sharing your creations and ideas with other artists, joining art communities, or participating in workshops and classes can offer invaluable advice and perspectives. Input from peers can help you hone your skills, recognize areas for improvement, and prompt new ideas. Collaboration and constructive criticism can compel you to investigate new possibilities and test your artistic boundaries, ultimately fueling your creative development.

In conclusion, hobbyhorse is not just a child's plaything but a powerful tool that can unleash one's creativity and imagination. Through the colorful world of hobbyhorse, individuals can explore their passion for horses, express their artistic skills through horse crafts, and even compete in dressage competitions. The power of colors, shapes, and imagination is evident in the vibrant and imaginative hobbyhorse culture in Finland. By embracing creativity in daily life, individuals can unlock their full potential and discover new ways to nourish their creativity. So, whether it's through hobbyhorse or any other form of artistic expression, everyone should embrace their creative side and let it shine to their fullest potential.

  • Why Finland Is Going Crazy...

Why Finland is Going Crazy Over Hobby-Horsing

Handmade hobby-horse

Finland is quickly becoming the global King of unusual hobbies and wacky sports – everything from air guitar championships to mobile phone throwing. But one emerging subculture that some are finding particularly confusing is the latest Finnish trend in hobby-horsing; using toy horse heads on sticks to imitate real equestrian events such as dressage and show jumping. It has become so popular that it is starting to spread to other Nordic nations and even further afield. There are now an estimated 10,000 stick-horse enthusiasts in Finland, and the number is steadily rising.

A hobby-horse of one’s own.

The craze is so strong that more Finnish toy stores, and even local grocery stores, are stocking hobby-horses. But regular store-bought horses aren’t enough for serious hobbyists, who instead buy theirs from professional crafters. Eponi is one such artisan, working out of her own home in Järvenpää to produce custom-made stick-horses which sell for between €100 and €300 each. Her inspiration to start this business began with the growing interest in hobby-horsing:

“I have always loved sewing. Toys, specifically – I enjoy crafting three-dimensional characters out of fabric. So when my niece showed me her first hobby-horse and told me it was her hobby now, I didn’t really understand what she was talking about, but I wanted to help her in pursuing her interests. I rediscovered my love for sewing, addicting more than ever when combined with another passion from my youth: horses ! Once I started making hobby-horses, I just couldn’t stop. There was nothing to be done but to make a business out of it.”

Eponi crafting a hobby-horse

Most of the aficionados do still love real life horses and horse riding. When asked about her favourite horse, Eponi replied: “With so many wonderful horses, how does one pick a favourite?! I do have a soft spot for cold bloods. Whenever I get to make friends with an Irish Cob or a Norwegian Fjord Horse, they instantly become my favourite thing in the world.”

Completed hobby-horse

But the reason why most of these fans aren’t heading down to the stables every day is because owning a horse is incredibly expensive, and near impossible in an urban area. The stick horse allows them to act out their fantasies of owning, riding, and competing with their own horse. More than that, they can give their toy horse a personality, brush and style its mane, talk to it, stroke it, and buy or make new accessories for it in the same way they would with a real horse, without cleaning up piles of dung!

Both adults and children find enjoyment in hobby-horses

Building a community

Other participants enjoy the activity more for the supportive community than anything else, especially those who are more socially awkward or who have been victims of bullying. They can receive lessons from older members, gain a social circle, and find an alternative to the more male-dominated mainstream sports.

A competitive edge

Pretending to gallop around a field with a toy may appear childish, but hobby-horsers claim that it isn’t as easy as it looks and it does take a lot of practise to get right. They are so serious about the sport that they are hosting official championship tournaments. The 2017 CityHorse event, which was held to celebrate the 110th anniversary of the native Finnhorse, included a separate tournament for hobby-horse competitors. Some of the jumps in these tournaments are nearly two meters high and require real skill to clear while carrying a stick-horse.

A hobby-horse competitor tackles a jump

Running free

Possibly the main reason why so many girls, both adults and children, are getting into the pastime is simply the sense of freedom they gain from it, which they can’t find in other activities.

“There are no ‘right’ or ‘wrong’ ways to do hobby-horsing,” says Eponi, “and the community itself has a very ‘you do you’ attitude. It can be a competitive sport in a variety of equestrian disciplines, but it can also be very free-form or role play. For some, it’s about making horses rather than riding them, or about photography or making YouTube videos.

A work-in-progress hobby-horse

“It’s a world where the hobbyists make the rules. There are no parents, managers and professional trainers to pressure them. Nobody’s giving them a hard time not training several times a week after school when they are tired, making them sit on the bench because they aren’t ‘good enough’ or trying to live their ambitions through children. It’s a hobby where everyone can come as they are, do what they want and as much as they want. No pressure, just have fun!”

When asked what advice she would give to those looking to get into the hobby, Eponi said: “Find what appeals to you in the hobby, and just go for it! Watching videos on YouTube or photos on Instagram can give a lot of inspiration, but you aren’t required to do what everyone else is doing. Do your own thing!”

Hobby horse fans show off their skills in Finland

  • Copy Link copied

HELSINKI (AP) — The 400 contestants at a sports arena in Finland show jumped, barrel raced and pranced in a dressage competition. They just didn’t do it with live horses.

What organizers called “the biggest hobby horse event in the world” took place Saturday in Finland’s western town of Seinajoki, which hosted the annual national championships for the sport that simulates the gymnastic elements of real-life horseback riding.

Teens and young girls, mostly 10-to-18-years-old galloped, jumped and pranced with their homemade stuffed horse heads on a wooden stick in the physically demanding competition as over 2,500 spectators watched, Elviira Sarakoski of the Finnish Hobby Horse Association told The Associated Press.

The Western horsemanship section included barrel racing modeled after North American rodeos.

Competitor Aquata Kirveskari, 19, said hobby-horsing “is a sport for everybody, but the boys haven’t been participating so much yet. But there are more and more coming every year.”

Sarakoski said Finland has over 10,000 hobby-horse aficionados — by far the largest number in any country — and says the sport is gradually gaining momentum in some other European nations like Sweden, Germany, the Netherlands and Switzerland, all hotbeds for equestrian sports.

There’s a bit of a social media subculture among the hobbyists, who often spend dozens of hours creating their own wooden horses. Sarakoski said most cite the camaraderie, the “do-it-yourself” spirit and the lack of bossing adults, not competition success, as what hooked them on the sport.

“At real horse stables, you always have adults telling you what is right and how things should be done. It’s not that it is bad, particularly concerning safety, but still,” she said, adding that many — but not all — of the competitors have some experience with live horses.

Kirveskari said she didn’t mind journalists flocking to the arena “because they can show this hobby isn’t just childish playing around.”

“This is a serious competition, and they can show it to people all around the world,” she said.

The highlight of Saturday’s event came as Marie Karkkainen of Finland scored the country’s new hobby-horse high jumping record, leaping over a bar set at 1.41 meters (4 feet, 7 inches) high.

“I wasn’t expecting anything like this at all. I was expecting like 1 meter or something,” the elated 16-year-old said, gently patting her hobby horse.

Chevalier - Hobbyhorse Circus

Chevalier - Hobbyhorse Circus is an irresistibly charming homage to the magnificent horses of circus and the silent movie era. Drawing inspiration from the history of traditional horse circuses, Kalle Lehto's ringmaster performs acrobatics, juggling and balancing with an amazing cast of hobby horses.

As the horses take center stage on the small manege, part of the ringmaster's story is told in short silent movies accompanied by old time silent movie music. Kalle's playful work with the hobby horses, natural comedic sense and the fluid movement of a breakdancer bring the magic of circus alive - completed by Sami Tammela's genius music and traditional circus soundscapes with electronic elements. Chevalier is the 3rd part of Kalle Lehto's trilogy of circus shows for children - following the highly popular "Around - Ympäri ämpäri" and "Circles - Kommellusten kabaree".

The Best of Helsinki Tour  showcases the  essence of the Finnish capital  in the best way possible. During a  sightseeing tour by bus  we will take you to the  most important historic landmarks  within the city center as well as to the  beautiful coastline . Continuing with a guided walk through the old town center, you begin to understand why the city, founded in the 16th century, blossomed under the rule of Russian Czar Alexander II.

Once a strategic  medieval merchant’s town , Helsinki has now made its name as a  leading design  and  culture hub of the modern world instead. We will start our discovery of a delightful combination of heritage and contemporary lifestyle from the cruise harbor or your hotel.

On our drive up from the southern peninsula we will visit the monument of the famous Finnish composer Sibelius . Situated in a pine filled seaside park, the Sibelius monument seems to  capture not only the beautiful music by Sibelius , but also the  spirit of the Finnish people . The steel tubes cold as ice are stunning and warm in appearance. One of the most exceptional stops following the scenic drive, is the absolutely magnificent  Rock Church . Set in natural stone, the elegant simplicity of the interior is irresistibly unique.

The highlights of our Helsinki walking tour include also the historic town center with  grand cathedrals  and  boulevards radiating a metropolitan vibe . The historic  Senate Square  and  Helsinki Cathedral, Esplanade walking street  and the outstanding granite building of Helsinki  Railway Station .

We will end the tour on  Market Square just a few steps from the city center harbor front, where you can choose to relax in nearby cafes while taking in the city atmosphere or do some shopping instead. The location is ideal for both, however should you wish to return to cruise pier or hotel, your private guide is pleased to give you the necessary instructions to make your way back.

Hobby-horsing is a popular sport in Finland. 'It's very bizarre for other people to see'

About 10,000 people, most of them between 10 and 18, are estimated to be involved in hobby-horsing in Finland. Competitors simulate traditional equestrian events

HELSINKI — Sporting a black leather jacket, dyed red hair and a tattooed arm, Alisa Aarniomaki looks like she’s on her way to a rock band rehearsal session.

But instead of carrying a guitar, the 20-year-old Finn gently holds on to something else: a puffy stuffed horse head on a wooden stick complete with glued-on eyes, mane and reins.

She’s been riding real horses from the age of 10 but became instantly smitten by hobby-horsing — a sport with gymnastic elements that has spawned a social media subculture among Finnish teen girls — when she first heard about it on a web discussion forum several years ago.

It has helped me a great deal that I can occasionally just go galloping into the woods with my friends

“Hobby-horsing has a strong therapeutic side to it,” says Aarniomaki, adding that it has helped her to deal with difficult personal issues such as her parents’ divorce and bullying at school.

“I’ve gone through lots of trouble and I’m still struggling with some issues. It has helped me a great deal that I can occasionally just go galloping into the woods with my friends. It somehow balances my mind.”

Like a real horse and its rider, the hobbyhorse and its master form a team and become attached to each other. Similarly, the sports simulates traditional equestrian events including competing in dressage and show jumping, and is physically demanding.

Hobby-horsing has gained momentum outside Finland because of this year’s release of the documentary “Hobbyhorse Revolution” by the Finnish Oscar-nominated director Selma Vilhunen. Over a year, she followed young hobbyhorse enthusiasts and their preparations for a competition.

Some actual horse riders may look down on hobby-horsing as childlike past-time not suitable for anyone aged over 10, but Fred Sundwall, the secretary general of the Equestrian Federation of Finland, disagrees.

Get a dash of perspective along with the trending news of the day in a very readable format.

“We think it’s simply wonderful that hobby-horsing has become a phenomenon and so popular,” Sundwall said. “It gives a chance to those children and teens who don’t own horses to interact with them also outside stables and riding schools.”

The vast majority of the hobbyhorses are homemade — splendid, colourful creatures complete with names like Chattanooga Choo Choo and Panda — exchanged and sold by owners at events and through social media. Some of them have been known to fetch up to 200 euros at auctions.

Aficionados take high pride in the sport’s do-it-yourself attitude, and very few industrially made hobbyhorses are seen at events because they are “lower-caste horses,” said Venla-Maria Uutela, a spokeswoman for a registered informal hobbyhorse society in Helsinki.

About 10,000 people, nearly all of them between the ages of 10 and 18, are estimated to be involved in hobby-horsing in Finland. Its popularity is also growing steadily in the other Nordic countries and elsewhere in Europe, though the numbers are much smaller.

No official statistics exist as hobby-horsing doesn’t have an affiliation with Finnish sports associations and enthusiasts meet and exchange views mainly at web discussion forums and share photo material and videos through Instagram and YouTube.

Regional competition events are arranged and organized by volunteers throughout Finland, culminating in national championships every year.

This year’s main event took place late April at a packed sports hall in the vicinity of Helsinki, attracting an estimated 1,000 spectators to watch about 200 participants competing with their hobbyhorses in several subcategories.

“It’s very bizarre for other people to see, for the first time especially, this kind of stuff,” said Taija Turkki, an 18-year-old hobbyhorse coach from the southeastern town of Lappeenranta. “Because they think we think the horse is alive, which we do not. We understand that it’s dead, made of fabric and all that.”

Lack of strict rules and pompous ceremonies, strong social media presence and female bonding are a big part of the attraction for the young women.

“Freedom to create and imagination are key aspects into why people start hobby-horsing,” says Aarniomaki, a hobbyhorse veteran who doesn’t compete actively anymore but is keen on organizing related events such as a recent hobbyhorse parade through the streets of Helsinki.

Female empowerment and girl power are something Alisa Aarniomaki thinks are clearly attached to the sports.

“I think hobby-horsing has a feministic agenda,” Aarniomaki said, after having judged competitions at the national championships. “No boys are coming and saying what we need to do, or bossing around. So I think there is some sort of a (feministic) point.”

For the Fren family, there was very easily a standout memory.

"One of the funniest things from this trip was riding a hobby horse around Helsinki," Cathy said.

Mark, Victoria and Jono immediately burst into laughter at the mention of Helsinki.

"One of [Finland's] sports is hobby horse dressage so they actually have a horse head on a stick and they gallop around and jump over all the barriers," Mark explained.

helsinki hobby horse tour

It's not all fun and games, hobby horse riding is a serious sport in Finland and the craze has swept the nation.

Tens of thousands of people gather to watch and take part in competitions completing circuits similar to those used in equestrian, with some fences as high as 1.2 meters.

Anyone can ride a hobby horse around Helsinki but a guided hobby horse tour will set you back a pretty penny.

It costs $575 for a couple to ride a tour hour course. Yowza.

While visiting Finland earlier in the year, the Frens found themselves participating in the bizarre sport. Well, almost everyone.

"I didn't fly 25 hours on a plane to ride a fake horse," Jono huffed.

While the rest of the family galloped their merry way around town, Jono insisted he hold his hobby horse in hand.

"It was bloody hysterical," Mark laughed.
