Robert MacIntyre produced an impressive back-nine birdie barrage to open up a two-shot lead after the opening round of the DP World Tour’s Made in HimmerLand.

The two-time DP World Tour winner mixed eight birdies with two bogeys during an impressive opening-round 64 at HimmerLand Golf and Spa Resort, pulling him ahead of closest challenger Ross Fisher.

Fisher set the initial clubhouse target after a four-under 66, while Johannes Veerman and Nick Bachem shared third spot with Daan Huizing and Ryder Cup hopeful Rasmus Hojgaard was among the group four off the pace.

"It was really tough today," MacIntyre said. "When I was sat in my room this morning, I was quite glad that I wasn't out there. It got a little bit nicer. Obviously, the breeze was really strong, but at least we didn't have any rain.

"It was just a mental battle out there and just had to stay positive. The dropped shots were going to happen and just had to take the chances when they came and thankfully I did that."

MacIntyre birdied the second and added another at the fifth after missing his eight-foot eagle attempt, then cancelled out a wayward tee shot and bogey at the eighth to pick up a shot at the next.

The Scot failed to get up and down from off the green to save par at the tenth, dropping him back to one under, only to see his fortunes improve when he holed a long-range birdie from off the next green and rolled in from 30 feet at the par-three 12th.

Flashback: Wilson's HimmerLand win

MacIntyre recovered from a wayward tee shot at the 13th to produce a brilliant up and down from the fairway to scramble a par, then took advantage of the driveable next for the first of back-to-back birdies.

A penultimate-hole birdie helped him close a back-nine 31 and extend his advantage over Fisher, who was the pick of the morning wave after mixing five birdies with a lone bogey during his opening round.

Rafa Cabrera-Bello

"I was pleased to do some nice work before heading out today and nice to see the ball go in," Fisher said. "It's a solid start and something to build on going into tomorrow."

Yannik Paul struggled to a two-over 72 and 2018 Ryder Cup player Thorbjorn Olesen is a further stroke back, while Pablo Larrazabal - the highest-ranked player in the field - is facing a battle to make the cut after a five-over 75 and Rafa Cabrera Bello struggled to an opening-round 77.

10 best teams to watch at 2024 zurich classic of new orleans at tpc louisiana, share this article.

After the first men’s major of the year at the Masters and the fifth signature event of the 2024 season at the RBC Heritage, the PGA Tour has teed up a little team golf down in the Bayou this week.

A field of 80 two-player teams have made their way to TPC Louisiana in Avondale for the 2024 Zurich Classic of New Orleans , which features a unique format. The teams will play fourball in the first and third rounds and foursomes (alternate shot) for the second and fourth rounds.

From defending and past champions to a handful of brothers and rising stars, these are the teams you should keep an eye on this week in the Big Easy.

Rory McIlroy, the world No. 2, makes his debut at the event alongside good friend Shane Lowry. McIlroy and Lowry have been teammates on the last two Ryder Cups with Team Europe but have only played together once in a losing effort, 4 and 3, in 2021 to Tony Finau and Harris English in fourball.

Xander Schauffele and Patrick Cantlay, Nos. 6 and 8 in the Official World Golf Ranking, respectively, are the betting favorites and for good reason. The pair won the event in 2022 and tied for fourth last year.

This isn’t the most exciting group of players, but Morikawa has found his form again with finishes of T-3 at the Masters two weeks ago and ninth at the RBC Heritage last week.

Last year’s winners took the title at 30 under and are back to defend their title once again this season. The names don’t jump off the screen, but four rounds of 66 or better sure do. Can they run it back?

The Texas twins are starting to pick up the pace early in their careers and each has top-25 finishes this season (Parker has three, including a T-6 last week in Puntacana).

Another set of twins, the 23-year-old Danes have earned early success on the DP World Tour (Nicolai has three wins, Rasmus has four) but only Nicolai has contended on the PGA Tour. He finished runner-up at the Farmers Insurance Open earlier this year and T-16 two weeks ago at the Masters.

Name a group that’ll have better vibes out on the course. I’ll wait. Both finished in the top 12 (with different partners) last year.

Honorable mentions

Kevin Kisner, Scott Brown

They may not win or contend but nobody will have more fun than these two. The pair have previously finished second (2017) and fifth (2019) at TPC Louisiana.

Francesco Molinari, Luke Donald

The European Ryder Cup captain and vice captain make for an intriguing pairing this week. Donald hasn’t played as much as NBC courts him for their open lead analyst role and Molinari has only made two out of six cuts this season on Tour.

Matt Kuchar, Steve Stricker

Do they hit it as far as other teams? Nope. But these vets could be ham and egg master chefs and make a run.

Alejandro Tosti, Ted Potter, Jr.

Tosti has been known to get a little hot under the collar on the course, which could make for some fun (and chaos) in a team event.

3 Siblings playing together at the 2024 Zurich Classic of New Orleans

T he Zurich Classic of New Orleans is the only team tournament on the official PGA Tour schedule. It is also an opportunity to see unusual golf formats on the circuit and also some curious facts.

Among the latter is the possibility of family members playing together in an official tournament. In the 2024 edition of the Zurich Classic of New Orleans, three pairs of brothers will be present, something very unusual on the PGA Tour. To top it off, two of the duos are composed of twins.

Let's see who they are.

Siblings playing together at the 2024 Zurich Classic of New Orleans

The three pairs of siblings who will be playing together at the Zurich Classic of New Orleans have their youth as a common denominator. Several of them are among the top rising stars in world golf.

1- Matt and Alex Fitzpatrick

Matt and Alex Fitzpatrick are the only pair of brothers returning to the Zurich Classic of New Orleans in 2024. The Fitzpatricks played the 2023 edition as a team, when they made the cut and finished 19th.

Matt Fitzpatrick , 2022 US Open champion, has played 11 PGA Tour tournaments during the current season, making eight cuts. His best results have been two Top 10s, with a fifth-place finish at The Players Championship as his best result.

Alex Fitzpatrick, meanwhile, finished T23 at the Corales Puntacana Championship, his only PGA Tour event of the season so far. On the DP World Tour, he has played nine tournaments, with seven cuts passed and a Top 10 as his best result.

2- Nicolai and Rasmus Hojgaard

The Hojgaard twins have been making waves over the last two seasons, especially Nicolai. He won the DP World Tour Championship in December and has become a steady player on the PGA Tour.

During 2024, Nicolai Hojgaard has played nine tournaments in the Americas, with six cuts made and a second place finish at the Farmers Insurance Open as his best result. He also played three tournaments in Europe, cleared three cuts and reached one Top 10.

Rasmus, meanwhile, also won in Europe in 2023 (Made in HimmerLand Tournament) and came close to earning his PGA Tour card. During 2024, he has played seven tournaments in Europe with six cuts passed (one WD), five Top 11s and a second-place best finish.

3- Parker and Pierceson Coody

Both Coody twins earned their PGA Tour card by finishing in the Top 30 of the Korn Ferry Tour points list in 2023. Pierceson has played 10 tournaments in 2024 with four cuts made (he has withdrawn twice) and a T18 at the Corales Puntacana Championship as his best finish.

Parker, meanwhile, has also played 10 events during the season, with better fortune than his brother. He has made 7 cuts and has reached three Top 25s, with a T6 at the Corales Puntacana Championship as his best result.

Rory McIlroy

McIlroy’s proposed return to boardroom ‘incredibly positive’ for PGA Tour

  • New chief executive of European Tour group welcomes move
  • McIlroy motivated by desire to end split in elite men’s golf

The newly installed chief executive of the European Tour group, Guy Kinnings, has urged the PGA Tour to seize the opportunity provided by Rory McIlroy’s willingness to return to the boardroom to help heal divisions in the game.

The Guardian revealed on Monday that McIlroy will assume roles on the PGA Tour’s policy board and the PGA Tour Enterprises board, subject to a vote on Wednesday. McIlroy is motivated by a strong desire to end the current split in elite men’s golf, where the PGA Tour, DP World Tour and Saudi Arabian-backed LIV Tour are essentially operating independently of each other.

“I would welcome it wholeheartedly,” said Kinnings, who succeeded Keith Pelley this month, of a McIlroy return to a position of power. “It would be an incredibly positive move for the PGA Tour to take but it would be great for everyone.”

Golf’s key constituent parts now involve various tours and the Saudi Public Investment Fund, which backs LIV. McIlroy enjoys positive relations with Yasir al-Rumayyan, the head of the PIF.

“He takes an interest in so many aspects of the sport,” Kinnings added. “I have known him for a very long time and he is so thoughtful. You think you know what is going on in the game and then you listen to Rory and say: ‘Wow, he has put that so well.’

“You want to have people who are ready to apply that kind of knowledge, experience and thinking. He is very well connected with people at the PGA Tour , the DP World Tour – we rely on him hugely – and also the PIF. He is the right person with those connections [and] would be a huge asset.”

Kinnings is adamant that a “united, global” route is necessary for the sport. “I see this as an amazing opportunity,” he added. “We truly have that, with the right people and voices to help shape it. Tiger [Woods] is involved, I am delighted Rory is looking at this. These are the people who should be helping to shape the game they have given so much to.

“I think it needs to be addressed and it needs to be addressed quickly. You need the right people round the table, giving it thought because this is complicated.”

McIlroy would become the only European voice on these PGA Tour committees, which itself is notable. The PGA Tour and DP World Tour have a strategic alliance but there has been general concern about European golf being left behind, with focus on the US. “I was always delighted to have European representation,” said Kinnings. “I think it is far better to have a global view and Rory truly has that.

“It is such an important time and he is passionate about reaching this solution that we all agree is in the best interests of the sport globally. So I think he would be so valuable, so constructive. Personally and on behalf of this tour, I would be delighted if he was back playing a very significant role in the important discussions that are ongoing.”

Fact or Fiction: Scottie Scheffler Is the PGA Tour Player of the Year Already

SI Golf’s writers and editors debate the historic runs of Scheffler and Nelly Korda, plus the return of LIV Golf.

  • Author: SI Golf Staff

Welcome back to SI Golf’s Fact or Fiction, where we’re not crazy to be entertaining Grand Slam odds for Scottie, and even wondering what they might be for Nelly.

Once again, we’re here to debate a series of statements for writers and editors to declare as “Fact” or “Fiction” along with a brief explanation. Responses may also (occasionally) be “Neutral” since there's a lot of gray area in golf.

Do you agree or disagree? Let us know on the SI Golf X account.

Scottie Scheffler won Monday at the RBC Heritage, dominating and completely brushing off any post-Masters hangover . Bernhard Langer was the last to win the week after a Masters title—in 1985. If the major was his best win of the season, Hilton Head was his second-best.

Bob Harig: FACT. Winning the Players Championship will get some attention but a victory a week after capturing the Masters is above and beyond. It’s simply too difficult to come back a few days later and compete at the level needed to maintain what went so well at Augusta National. Not to mention … Harbour Town is such a different test of golf than Augusta National. That Scheffler was able to quickly adapt and keep it going is impressive.

John Pluym: FACT. Check out these two stats: In the last 20 years, only Tiger Woods averaged a tournament finish position in the top 10 after winning the Masters in 2002. And the record for most tournament victories after winning at Augusta in the same year is three, and Woods did it twice (2002, ’05), and Jordan Spieth did it in 2015. So, yes, Scheffler winning the RBC Heritage the week after the Masters is no ordinary feat. In fact, it’s actually quite extraordinary when you consider the stats above.

Jeff Ritter: FACT: Scottie is on fire, and going right out and winning a week after the Masters is further proof that he’s on another level right now. The PGA Championship can’t get here fast enough.

John Schwarb: FICTION. Becoming the first back-to-back Players champ, against the Tour’s deepest field on its flagship course, has to rank second in this run. But as Bob wrote Monday, not mailing it in at Harbour Town is still remarkable. Scottie is wired differently.

Scheffler’s wife Meredith is due at the end of the month with the couple’s first child. The world No. 1 could take the rest of the year off as a new father and still win PGA Tour Player of the Year.

Bob Harig: FACT.  Scheffler has won a major, the PGA Tour’s flagship event and two signature events. Nobody else on the PGA Tour has more than one victory at this point. Take Hideki Matsuyama, for example. He won the Genesis, a signature event. He’d need to add a major plus one of the remaining signature events (Wells Fargo, Memorial, Travelers) and ONE more win just to match Scheffler. And what win would be on the same level as the Players? So that suggests another signature event or a FedEx Cup playoff win. It’s possible someone wins a major and the FedEx Cup and gets consideration but it is difficult to see that at this point.

John Pluym: FACT. The only golfer on a hotter streak than Scheffler is Nelly Korda, and she plays on the LPGA Tour. I don’t see any golfer on the PGA Tour playing consistently well enough to overtake Scheffler for POY if Scheffler decided to pack it in for the rest of the season. Rory? Xander? Wyndham? Max? Tommy? Collin? It’s not even close right now.

Jeff Ritter: FICTION. Scottie’s resume would be impressive, but the news cycle moves fast! Someone else—maybe Wyndham Clark, or Rory or Morikawa, for example—could snag one of the summer’s majors and cap the season with a FedEx Cup title just before voters go to the polls for POY.

John Schwarb: FACT. Taking POY from Scheffler right now would likely require a half-dozen wins with two majors. Tough to see who’s doing that given the lackluster seasons by so many Tour “stars.”

Nelly Korda won her fifth consecutive start at the Chevron Championship (for her second career major), tying five-win streaks by Nancy Lopez and Annika Sorenstam. Hers is the most impressive.

Bob Harig: FICTION. This is not to diminish Korda’s accomplishment, which is incredible. We are comparing remarkable achievements. But her winning early in the year, and then not playing for seven weeks, makes it harder to equate it to what Lopez and Sorenstam did. But we’re splitting hairs. Winning five tournaments—at all—is amazing.

John Pluym: FICTION. Here’s the thing: Is the LPGA Tour field better than when Lopez and Sorenstam were dominating? No. So, for now, the streak is impressive but let’s see if she can win a couple more in a row.

Nelly Korda jumps in the pond next to the 18th after winning the 2024 Chevron Championship.

The LPGA's best player also has excellent cannonball form.

Thomas Shea-USA TODAY Sports

Jeff Ritter: FACT. Today’s LPGA draws from a worldwide pool of the best players the world has ever known. It’s a much more global tour than in the days of Lopez, and even Annika. It’s tough to win, even if Nelly is currently making it look easy.

John Schwarb: FICTION. Sorenstam’s five, like Korda’s, was capped with a win at the Kraft Nabisco Championship (now Chevron). But she won that by eight shots, one of many tournaments in which she was the best by a wide margin.

LIV Golf returns this week with a two-week swing through Australia and Singapore. Jon Rahm will get his first win at one of the two stops.

Bob Harig: FACT. Rahm had a bad Masters but that happened to a lot of players. He started strong at LIV with a couple of early close calls and he’s too good to let this linger for long. Either place seems a good spot to get the first win and some momentum heading into the PGA Championship.

John Pluym: FICTION. It might take a pair of low-pressure stops for Rahm to win after the defending Masters champion stunk it up during the first major of the year. And he looks like a guy who is enjoying a $450 million payday and has settled into playing 54-hole tournaments.

Jeff Ritter: FICTION. Rahm appeared lost and ticked off leaving Augusta. But is he just going to throw the switch on his golf game? I’d expect him to win somewhere on LIV this year, but I’m skeptical that it’s coming soon. He has some work to do.

John Schwarb: FACT. As great as it is to return to the Masters as the defending champion, there was a lot more baked into it for Rahm as a LIV guy and it didn’t appear easy on or off the course. He can exhale with that behind him and these are a pair of low-pressure stops for the Spaniard to get a W.

2024 Zurich Classic of New Orleans: Top 10 power rankings at TPC Louisiana

A look at the top 10 teams poised to succeed at the 2024 Zurich Classic of New Orleans.

By Mike Randleman | Apr 24, 2024

Zurich Classic of New Orleans - TPC Louisiana

FedEx Cup: 54th/--. Nicolai Hojgaard/Rasmus Hojgaard. 2024ZurichClassic/PowerRank/5. 5. OWGR: 35th/83rd

Nicolai Hojgaard is already making a name for himself on the PGA Tour. Twin brother, Rasmus, could follow suit soon.

The 23-year-old Danes can extradite the process if PGA Tour member Nicolai and DP World Tour member, Rasmus, can win the Zurich Classic of New Orleans.

It’s hard to beat the chemistry that these two will have this week.

A downside is this will be their first time playing TPC Louisiana.

The upside is they have the talent to overcome a lack of course knowledge.

Starting with Nicolai, he’s just a couple weeks removed from a T-6th finish at the Masters where he briefly led on Saturday. It hasn’t been completely smooth sailing as Nicolai adjusts to his first full year playing primarily in the U.S., but he’s shown flashes like taking solo second at the Farmers Insurance Open.

Nicolai started 2024 strong on the DP World Tour with T-25th and T-7th at a pair of high-profile events in Dubai.

Nicolai has experience with team golf as a member of the 2023 European Ryder Cup team.

He ranks 21st on the PGA Tour in Strokes Gained: Off-the-Tee (.474) and is 21st in driving distance (307.2 yards). It’ll be fun to see him let loose in four-ball.

While Nicolai is currently the better of the two, Rasmus got a taste of success on the DP World Tour first. He’s a four-time winner beginning in 2019 and as recently as last year’s Made in Himmerland Open.

Rasmus began the year with three top-10s on that circuit. A concern this week is we haven’t seen him since he withdrew from the Hero Indian Open in late March.

Rasmus can complement his brother’s ball striking by rolling the rock. He’s fifth on the DP World Tour in putts per round (28.98). Not to mention, he’s second in scoring average (69.6).

PGA Tour players learn how much loyalty is worth in new equity program

Players who stayed loyal to the PGA Tour amid lucrative recruitment by Saudi-funded LIV Golf are starting to find out how much that loyalty could be worth.

The PGA Tour on Wednesday began contacting the 193 players eligible for the $930 million from a “Player Equity Program” under the new PGA Tour Enterprises .

The bulk of that money — $750 million — went to 36 players based on their career performance, the last five years and how they fared in a recent program that measured their star power.

How much they received was not immediately known. Emails were going out Wednesday afternoon and Thursday informing players of what they would get. One person who saw a list of how the equity shares were doled out said the names had been redacted. The person spoke to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity because many details of the program were not made public.

The Telegraph reported Tiger Woods was to receive $100 million in equity and Rory McIlroy could get $50 million, without saying how it came up with those numbers.

Commissioner Jay Monahan outlined the first-of-its-kind equity ownership program in a Feb. 7 memo to players, a week after Strategic Sports Group became a minority investor in the new commercial PGA Tour Enterprises.

The private equity group, a consortium of professional sports owners led by the Fenway Sports Group, made an initial investment of $1.5 billion that could be worth $3 billion. The tour is still negotiating with the Public Investment Fund of Saudi Arabia — the financial muscle behind the rival LIV Golf league — as an investor.

Any deal with PIF would most certainly increase the value of the equity shares.

Another person with knowledge of the Player Equity Program, speaking on condition of anonymity because of the private nature of the dealings, said the equity money is not part of the SSG investment. That money was geared toward growth capital.

Golf.com received a series of informational videos on the Player Equity Program that was sent to players and reported only 50% of the equity would vest after four years, 25% more after six years and the rest of it after eight years.

It also reported how the 36 players from the top tier were judged on “career points,” such as how long they were full members, victories, how often they reached the Tour Championship and extra points for significant victories.

Jason Gore, the tour’s chief player officer, said in one of the videos, “It’s really about making sure that our players know the PGA Tour is the best place to compete and showing them how much the Tour appreciates them being loyal.”

Emails also were sent to 64 players who would share $75 million in aggregate equity based on the past three years, and $30 million to 57 players who are PGA Tour members. Also, $75 million in equity shares was set aside for 36 past players instrumental in building the tour.

The program has an additional $600 million in equity grants that are recurring for future PGA Tour players. Those would be awarded in amounts of $100 million annually started in 2025.

Players only get equity shares from one of the four tiers now, although everyone would be eligible for the recurring grants.

Even with equity ownership geared toward making the PGA Tour better, the concern was players questioning who got how much and whether they received their fair share.

LIV Golf lured away seven major champions dating to 2018 since it launched in 2022, all with guaranteed contracts and most of them believed to have topped $100 million.

McIlroy, playing this week in the Zurich Classic of New Orleans, was asked how much would make players feel validated for their decision to stay with the PGA Tour.

“I think the one thing we’ve learned in golf over the last two years is there’s never enough,” McIlroy replied.

RBC Heritage: Final round suspended due to darkness, Monday finish underway at Harbour Town

Change Text Size

Updated: Monday, April 22, 8 a.m. ET: The final round of the RBC Heritage resumed at 8 a.m. ET.

Scheffler, chasing his fourth PGA TOUR win in five starts, authored a signature moment in the waning twilight Sunday, recovering from a hooked 4-iron second shot on the par-4 15th with a sorcerous wedge to 11 feet that he converted for an unlikely par to maintain a five-stroke lead over Wyndham Clark, Patrick Cantlay, J.T. Poston and Sahith Theegala.

Scheffler, chasing his fourth PGA TOUR win in five starts, stood 20 under for the tournament as the final round was suspended due to darkness at 7:45 p.m. Sunday, with nine players yet to complete the final round on Hilton Head Island, South Carolina.

This will be the second unscheduled Monday finish on the PGA TOUR this season and first since the Cognizant Classic in The Palm Beaches, won by Austin Eckroat. The AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am, won by Wyndham Clark, was shortened to 54 holes after play was unable to be contested on Sunday and Monday.

Sunday’s play at Harbour Town was initially suspended at 4:28 p.m. due to lightning in the area. The final pairing of Scheffler and Sepp Straka had completed 11 holes at the time. Players were removed from the course, with the delay ultimately lasting 2 hours and 32 minutes before play resumed at 7 p.m.

Updated: Sunday, April 21, 6:30 p.m. ET: The final round of the RBC Heritage will resume at 7 p.m. ET.

Updated: Sunday, April 21, 5:40 p.m. ET: The final round of the RBC Heritage will not resume at 6 p.m. ET.

Updated: Sunday, April 21, 5:28 p.m. ET: The final round of the RBC Heritage is scheduled to resume at 6 p.m. ET.

Updated: Sunday, April 21, 4:28 p.m. ET: The RBC Heritage’s final round has been suspended due to lightning in the area, with the final groups playing the back nine Sunday at Harbour Town Golf Links.

Play was suspended at 4:28 p.m. local time, with leader Scottie Scheffler playing the 12th hole. Players were taken off the course at the time of suspension.

Scheffler began the final round at 16 under, one stroke clear of Sepp Straka, and the world No. 1 turned in 3-under 33 with a chip-in eagle at the par-5 second, a two-putt birdie at the par-5 fifth and seven pars. Scheffler stood 19 under, four strokes clear of the field at the time of delay. Seven players stood 15 under.

“We were hoping to play through this; we felt like we had another 25 minutes left of this heavy rain and were then going to get a break on the back end,” said Mark Dusbabek, the PGA TOUR’s senior director lead TV Rules & Video Analyst, on the CBS broadcast. “We had lightning unfortunately pop up 4 miles away; just suddenly caught us in, so we had to stop play for this. We’re going to see how things go here and make a decision.

"The course was not unplayable. It wasn't because of the rain. It was just because the lightning popped up."

The final round of the RBC Heritage is poised to deliver fans a fantastic finish, but that might not come without a little bit of weather late in the day.

After the first three rounds of tournament golf at Harbour Town Golf Links were accompanied by sunshine and temperatures ranging from the upper 70s into the mid-80s, Sunday could bring golfers a different challenge to navigate as the tournament comes to a close.

According to the forecast, a cold front will be slowly moving southward into the Hilton Head Island area on Sunday, increasing the chances for showers and a few thunderstorms as play gets into the early to mid-afternoon hours and continuing into the evening hours. Storms could produce gusty winds and heavy rainfall. Otherwise, Sunday morning will remain dry with temperatures warming into the mid to upper 70s before falling into the 60s late in the day. Light wind Sunday morning will increase out of the north 10-15 gusting to 20-25 mph late in the day.

The final pairing of the day, Scottie Scheffler and Sepp Straka, are set to tee off at 1:55 p.m. ET. Scheffler holds a one-stroke lead at 16-under.
