The 'Meeting Tom Cruise' Podcast Hosts Are Still Waiting Their Turn to Encounter the Actor

Shannon Raphael - Author

Mar. 8 2021, Updated 2:32 p.m. ET

If you've ever fantasized about a meet-cute with your favorite actor, or you're a fan of action star and famed Scientologist, Tom Cruise, then we have quite the podcast recommendation for you.

Meeting Tom Cruise , which is set to drop on all major podcasting platforms in January 2021, is all about first-hand stories about what it was like for actors and other celebrities to meet the man, the myth, and the legend himself.

The show's trailer features several snippets from stories about the Top Gun star. One includes a woman recounting how it felt like Tom moved in slow motion when she first met him, while a man describes how a smoothie appeared out of nowhere in Tom's hand.

Needless to say, there are a lot of accounts about what it was like to meet the Mission Impossible actor, and hosts Jeff Meacham and Joel Johnstone (who are actors themselves) want to get to the bottom of them.

"We're going to talk to people who have met Tom Cruise. Why? Because Tom Cruise is the greatest movie star of all time," Jeff shares in the trailer. "Everyone who has met him has an amazing story to tell."

The two are huge fans of the actor, but there's one thing they can't share with their guests.

"Listen, we love Tom Cruise. We are inspired by Tom Cruise," Jeff shares in the trailer.

"But, while we live and work in Hollywood, we've never actually met Tom Cruise," Joel adds.

Before you listen, find out who Joel and Jeff are and where you've seen them before.

1. Jeff Meacham

The 41-year-old actor and Florida native is, perhaps, best known for playing Josh Oppenhol on black-ish. He's the boss of Andre "Dre" Johnson (Anthony Anderson), and his first appearance on the ABC comedy was in the 2014 pilot episode.

He played the character on an episode of the black-ish spinoff, g rown-ish.

Jeff also starred as Principal Bradford on the Nickelodeon comedy, The Thundermans. The show ran from 2013 to 2018.

His other notable roles include one-episode spots on How I Met Your Mother, The Secret Life of the American Teenager, and Ugly Betty.

Outside of acting (and his upcoming podcasting position), Jeff is married to Christy Meyers. The couple swapped vows on July 2, 2008, and they share two sons together, Jack and Hudson.

2. Joel Johnstone

View this post on Instagram A post shared by Joel Johnstone (@joeljohnstone)

If you keep up with shows that are critical darlings, then you'll likely recognize Joel Johnstone from his role in the Amazon Prime original series, The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel. He plays Archie Cleary, who is the husband of Midge Maisel's best friend, Imogene Cleary (Bailey De Young).

The 37-year-old actor also appeared in episodes of The Resident, L.A.'s Finest, Council of Dads, Timeless, iZombie, and Doubt.

Joel had regular roles as Gus Grissom on The Astronaut Wives Club, as Cameron on The Newsroom , and as Dr. Andrew Cesario on Getting On.

He married Ada Yan in 2015, and the two have a son together.

Will the Meeting Tom Cruise hosts get to interact with the actor after the podcast is live? It remains to be seen.

A Complete Timeline Of Tom Cruise And Katie Holmes's Relationship

Bailey Benningfield

TomKat happened quickly. In spring 2005, Tom Cruise and Katie Holmes were about to begin dating one another in a highly publicized romance, surprising fans and the media. But even more surprising was the speed at which their romance progressed. Within weeks of meeting, the two became engaged. Within less than a year, they were expecting a baby. Suri Cruise was born in 2006.

Scandals related to Cruise's erratic behavior plagued the union, and rumors swirled that Scientology was behind the pairing. Many also believed the relationship was a publicity stunt - both Cruise and Holmes had movies coming out during the beginning of their romance, the height of their very public courtship.

Although Cruise was venerated in 2005 for his successful movies , his career has since taken a downhill turn. Exposés about Scientology have discredited the church and its followers, and Cruise's odd behavior makes him an eccentric figure in the minds of many. Cruise and Holmes's whirlwind romance ended in divorce, but it's hard to forget the strange Scientology-laden saga of their relationship.

Holmes eventually stopped speaking about Cruise like she did in the beginning of their relationship. She no longer gushed over her husband, instead focusing more on talking about her acting roles.

She told  Marie Claire , "I feel ready. For the next chapter in my life. I’m excited to begin a new phase: roles I might have been afraid to play, places I want to travel with my daughter."

June 2012: Cruise Premieres His Film 'Rock of Ages' Without Holmes

In June 2012, Cruise showed up to the premiere of his film Rock of Ages . Holmes was notably absent. Cruise made brief mention of Holmes on the red carpet, calling her "an amazing woman."

He also raved about Holmes in an interview with Playboy :

She is an extraordinary person, and if you spent five minutes with her, you’d see it. Everything she does, she does with this beautiful creativity. She’s funny and charming, and when she walks into the room, I just feel better. I’m a romantic. I like doing things like creating romantic dinners, and she enjoys that.

June 2012: Holmes And Cruise File For Divorce

Holmes is rumored to have thought Cruise might send their daughter Suri to the Sea Org, a Scientologist organization where children are subjected to forced labor at sea. Holmes filed for divorce, and just 10 days later, the pair reached a settlement that gave Holmes custody of Suri .

The settlement allegedly prevents Suri from becoming involved with Scientology. Because Scientologists have to cut off family members who leave the church, Cruise has gone for long periods of time without seeing Suri.

Tom Cruise and Mimi Rogers's Relationship Timeline: A Look Back

Tom Cruise and Mimi Rogers met in 1985 before tying the knot in 1987.

ICYMI — or are just having a hard time remembering — Oscar-nominated actor Tom Cruise and actress Mimi Rogers dated in Cruise's  post-Cher  and pre- Nicole Kidman  days. The pair met in 1985 — although how, exactly, is up for debate — and married in 1987, marking a first for Cruise and the second marriage for Rogers. The pair later finalized their divorce in 1990.

During the course of their relationship, the  Risky Business  star and  The Rapture  starlet spoke highly of each other when giving interviews and confidently stepped out in public as each other's arm candy (not everyone can pull off T-shirts tucked into Bermuda shorts with ease). However, as with any couple, Cruise and Rogers had their ups and downs. Throw in the pressures of Hollywood, and it would eventually prove all too much for the actors.

Here's a look back at Tom Cruise and Mimi Rogers's relationship.

1985: Tom Cruise and Mimi Rogers first meet

In 1986, Cruise, then 23,  told  Rolling Stone  he'd met Rogers, then 29, "at a dinner party about a year ago" when he was developing the original  Top Gun .  However, the courtship wasn't  quite  as simple as a young Cruise introducing himself and asking to date Rogers. The actor said Rogers "was dating a friend" at the time.

"I thought she was extremely bright," Cruise recalled to the publication.

Rogers remembered things differently,  telling  Sun Sentinel   that she and Cruise had been introduced by mutual friends.

"I wasn't seeing anybody, he wasn't seeing anybody, and they thought, 'These people should be going out with somebody — let's see if they want to go out with each other,'" Rogers told the newspaper. "And we said, 'Aw, what the heck. OK.'"

May 9, 1987: Tom Cruise and Mimi Rogers get married

The idea of marriage was introduced quickly, but given the magnitude of Cruise's stardom following the success of the blockbuster Top Gun  , the couple referred to their wedding by an ominous title: "The Project." Rogers, a second-generation Scientologist herself, is believed to have been one of Cruise's first links to the polarizing belief system.

In May 1987, Cruise and Rogers executed their, uh, project and tied the knot,  according to  People .  The Mighty Ducks  actor Emilio Estevez was Cruise's best man at the "very small, intimate and beautiful" event. Interestingly, nearly one year before Cruise and Rogers wed, he told  Rolling Stone,  "I don't know if I could get married."

Rogers spoke fondly of Cruise in their years together. "There's a lot of contentment and security (in marriage)," she  told  Chicago Tribune  in 1988. "I highly recommend it.''

December 9, 1989: Tom Cruise files for divorce from Mimi Rogers

According to Andrew Morton's  Tom Cruise: An Unauthorized Biography , the actor filed for divorce on Dec. 9, 1989. Production on  Days of Thunder  (starring Cruise and his future wife, Kidman) began just two days later. In 1995, Cruise  described to  Vanity Fair  his reaction to meeting Kidman as "instant lust."

Morton cited a statement made by Cruise and Rogers to address the announcement of their split in January 1990: "While there have been positive aspects to our marriage, there were some issues which could not be resolved even after working on them for a period of time."

Ironically, just days before news of Cruise and Rogers's split broke, the  Rain Man  star insisted that (despite tabloid conjecture) he "couldn't imagine being without" his then-wife. "Since I've been with her, it's opened me up a lot," he  revealed to  Rolling Stone  in 1990. "I think it's helped me be a better actor. We live a lot of life together. We share everything. That's the best thing about life. Otherwise, you go through it pretty sad and lonely and angry." At the risk of laying it on too thick, Cruise added, "I care about my wife more than anything in the world. She's my best friend. I just really like being with her, you know? I love her."

February 1990: Tom Cruise and Mimi Rogers finalize divorce

After finalizing his divorce from Rogers in February 1990, Cruise and Kidman reportedly wed in December. The actor  told Barbara Walters  in 1992 that he and his ex hadn't spoken "in a couple of years," though he did "wish her well."

In 1993, the  Bosch  star spoke to  Playboy ,  per E! Online , and made some interesting comments about her ex. "Here's the real story," she reportedly told the publication. "Tom was seriously thinking of becoming a monk. At least for that period of time, it looked as though marriage wouldn't fit into his overall spiritual need. And he thought he had to be celibate to maintain the purity of his instrument." She also mentioned that her own instrument "needed tuning."

Rogers was candid about the trouble of being married to one of the most famous men in the world.

"You cease to be an individual," she  told  People  in 1995. "No matter what the article is, it's 'Tom Cruise's wife ...'" Rogers added that she was waiting for the moment when she didn't "have to talk about that [blankety-blank] name anymore."

Though, in 2001, she  explained to  The Telegraph  that "stardom wasn't really a problem" in their marriage. "What did annoy me was the age thing," she added. "Every six months, [the press] seemed to add another year to my age. If we were still married, the press would have me in my 60s by now."

Hollywood Flashback: Tom Cruise Reveals How He Landed His First Hollywood Agent 19

Mission- Impossible_BTS - Photofest - H 2016

Tom Cruise , Actor

[Sean] Penn goes, “Come out to L.A. and stay with me,” so I stayed in his guest house for a couple of weeks. He said, “You’ve got to check out CAA ,” because I wasn’t signed with any agent. I remember calling Paula and sitting down with her. She wanted to very much take me to lunch, and I just remember how warm, intelligent and beautiful she was.

Paula Wagner, Former CAA agent

I brought him up to the office, had him meet everybody, sold my heart out, and everybody was like, “OK, take a shot, let’s see what happens.” This was a new thing, signing these new, young actors. Tom was 19 when I signed him.

Cruise in 1981, the year he made his big-screen debut in ‘Endless Love.’

I wanted to sit down with their filmmakers and study their movies, and CAA had all of those connections. I didn’t go to acting class. I didn’t go to film school. Film school was every single day that I was making a movie.

Michael [ Ovitz ] was certainly instrumental in keeping Sydney [Pollack] interested. Sydney was ambivalent right from the get-go, and he was not a particularly collaborative director. I think Larry Gelbart had a phrase for him: “He’s the arsonist and the fire chief.” And I said, “What do you mean?” And he said, “He always yells, ‘Fire! We have to put it out!’ Then adds, ‘Thankfully, I’m also the fire chief.’ ” He loved to solve problems. Sydney and I were ambivalent right from the beginning. This had been my project; I’d thought of it, with Murray [ Schisgal ], I gave it the title, and I had also worked with Elaine [May]. When Sydney came on board, he just wanted me to be the actor. I said, “That’s not where we are on this. You’re coming in as an eleventh-hour director.” So Michael had to keep the peace as best he could between Sydney and me.

Who Is Tom Cruise?

Thomas Cruise Mapother IV, better known as Tom Cruise, was born on July 3, 1962, in Syracuse, New York, to Mary and Thomas Mapother. Cruise's mother was an amateur actress and schoolteacher, and his father was an electrical engineer. His family moved around a great deal when Cruise was a child to accommodate his father's career.

Cruise's parents divorced when he was 11, and the children moved with their mother to Louisville, Kentucky, and then to Glen Ridge, New Jersey, after she remarried. Like his mother and three sisters, Cruise suffered from dyslexia, which made academic success difficult for him. He excelled in athletics, however, and considered pursuing a career in professional wrestling until a knee injury sidelined him during high school.

At age 14, Cruise enrolled in a Franciscan seminary with thoughts of becoming a priest, but he left after a year. When he was 16, a teacher encouraged him to participate in the school's production of the musical Guys and Dolls . After Cruise won the lead of Nathan Detroit, he found himself surprisingly at home on the stage, and a career was born.

'Taps,' 'The Outsiders'

Cruise set a 10-year deadline for himself in which to build an acting career. He left school and moved to New York City, struggling through audition after audition before landing an appearance in 1981's Endless Love , starring Brooke Shields. Around this same time, he snagged a small role in the military school drama Taps (1981), co-starring Sean Penn .

His role in Taps was upgraded after director Harold Becker saw Cruise's potential, and his performance caught the attention of a number of critics and filmmakers. In 1983, Cruise appeared in Francis Ford Coppola 's The Outsiders , which also starred Emilio Estevez , Matt Dillon and Rob Lowe —all prominent members of a group of young actors the entertainment press dubbed the "Brat Pack." The film was not well received, but it allowed Cruise to work with an acclaimed director on a high-profile project.

'Risky Business'

His next film, Risky Business (1983), grossed $65 million. It also made Cruise a highly recognizable actor — thanks in no small part to a memorable scene of the young star dancing in his underwear.

In 1986, after a two-year hiatus, the budding actor released the big-budget fantasy film Legend , which did poorly at the box office. That same year, however, Cruise's A-list status was confirmed with the release of Top Gun , which co-starred Kelly McGillis, Anthony Edwards and Meg Ryan . The testosterone-fueled action-romance, set against the backdrop of an elite naval flight school, became the highest-grossing film of 1986.

'The Color of Money,' 'Rain Man' and 'Born on the Fourth of July'

Cruise followed the tremendous success of Top Gun with a string of both critically acclaimed and commercially successful films. He first starred in The Color of Money (1986) with co-star Paul Newman , and then went on to work with Dustin Hoffman on Rain Man (1988). Cruise's next role, as Vietnam veteran Ron Kovic in the biopic Born on the Fourth of July (1989), earned him an Academy Award nomination and a Golden Globe for Best Actor.

'A Few Good Men,' 'The Firm' and 'Interview with a Vampire'

In 1992, Cruise proved once more that he could hold his own opposite a screen legend when he co-starred with Jack Nicholson in the military courtroom drama A Few Good Men . The film grossed more than $15 million its first weekend and earned Cruise a Golden Globe nomination. He continued to demonstrate his success as a leading man with The Firm (1993) and Interview with a Vampire (1994), which co-starred Brad Pitt.

'Mission: Impossible,' 'Jerry McGuire'

Next, Cruise hit the big screen with two huge hits—the $64 million blockbuster Mission: Impossible (1996), which the star also produced, and the highly acclaimed Jerry McGuire (1996), directed by Cameron Crowe. For the latter, Cruise earned a second Academy Award nomination and Golden Globe for Best Actor.

'Eyes Wide Shut,' 'Magnolia'

Cruise and then-wife Kidman spent much of 1997 and 1998 in England shooting Eyes Wide Shut , an erotic thriller that would be director Stanley Kubrick 's final film. The movie came out in the summer of 1999 to mixed reviews, but that year Cruise enjoyed greater success with the release of Magnolia . His performance as a self-confident sex guru in the ensemble film earned him another Golden Globe Award and an Academy Award nomination for Best Supporting Actor.

'Vanilla Sky,' 'The Last Samurai'

Cruise then starred in the long-awaited smash hit Mission: Impossible 2 in 2000, alongside Anthony Hopkins , Thandie Newton and Ving Rhames. In 2002, he starred in Vanilla Sky , his second collaboration with Crowe, as well as Steven Spielberg 's Minority Report . The following year, Cruise traveled to Australia to shoot the $100 million war epic The Last Samurai, which earned him another Golden Globe nomination.

'War of the Worlds'

Cruise proved he remained a top draw by starring in the Spielberg-directed remake of the science-fiction classic War of the Worlds (2005), which grossed more than $230 million at the box office.

His next effort, Mission: Impossible 3 (2006), also scored well with audiences. However, Cruise was faced with a professional setback in August when Paramount Pictures ended its 14-year relationship with the actor. The company's chairman cited Cruise's erratic behavior and controversial views as the reason for the split, though industry experts noted that Paramount more likely ended the partnership over Cruise's high earnings from the Mission: Impossible franchise.

Cruise quickly rebounded and on November 2, 2006, he announced his new partnership with film executive Paula Wagner and the United Artists film studio. Their first production as a team, the political drama Lions for Lambs (2007), proved a commercial disappointment despite a strong cast that included Meryl Streep and Robert Redford .

'Tropic Thunder'

Taking a break from weighty material, Cruise delighted audiences with his performance in the comedy Tropic Thunder (2008). Despite his relatively small role in a movie that featured Robert Downey Jr. and Ben Stiller , Cruise stood out by obscuring his trademark good looks to play a balding, obese movie studio executive.

'Valkyrie,' 'Rock of Ages'

In December 2008, Cruise released his second project through United Artists. The film, Valkyrie , was a World War II drama about a plot to assassinate German leader Adolf Hitler . Cruise starred as a German army officer who became involved in the conspiracy.

Cruise returned to one of his most popular franchises in 2011 with Mission: Impossible—Ghost Protocol . Breaking into new territory, he then starred in the 2012 musical Rock of Ages . Although Cruise received some positive reviews for his performance as a rock star, the movie failed to attract much of an audience.

'Jack Reacher,' 'Edge of Tomorrow'

Returning to his mainstream action roots, Cruise starred in the 2012 crime drama Jack Reacher , based on a book by Lee Child. He then headlined a pair of science-fiction adventures, Oblivion (2013) and Edge of Tomorrow (2014). Showing no signs of slowing down, the veteran actor in 2015 delivered his usual high-energy performance for the fifth installment of his blockbuster franchise, Mission: Impossible—Rogue Nation .

Latest Movies and Familiar Franchises

In 2016, Cruise reprised the role of Jack Reacher for Never Go Back . He then headlined a reboot of The Mummy (2017), which performed respectably at the box office but was savaged by critics, before earning better reviews later that year for the crime thriller American Made .

2018 brought a return to familiar territory for Cruise, who starred in Mission Impossible —Fallout that summer. Prior to its release, he tweeted a photo to mark day 1 of production on the long-awaited sequel Top Gun: Maverick , scheduled for a June 2020 release.

Scientology and Personal Life

Cruise married actress Mimi Rogers in 1987. It was through Rogers that the actor became a student of Scientology, the religion founded by writer L. Ron Hubbard. Cruise credited the church with curing his dyslexia, and he soon became one of its leading proponents. However, while his spiritual life flourished, his marriage to Rogers ended in 1990. That same year, Cruise made the racecar drama Days of Thunder alongside Kidman. Though the movie was unpopular among critics and fans alike, the two lead actors had real chemistry. On Christmas Eve 1990, after a brief courtship, Cruise and Kidman married in Telluride, Colorado.

Divorce from Kidman

For much of the 1990s, Cruise and Kidman found themselves fiercely defending the happiness and legitimacy of their marriage. They filed two different lawsuits against tabloid publications for stories they considered libelous. In each case, the couple received a published retraction and apology, along with a large monetary settlement which they donated to charity. The couple has two children, Isabella and Connor.

On February 5, 2001, Cruise and Kidman announced their separation after 11 years of marriage. The couple cited the difficulties involved with two acting careers and the amount of time spent apart while working. Following the divorce, Cruise briefly dated his Vanilla Sky co-star Penelope Cruz , followed by a much-publicized relationship with actress Katie Holmes. A month after his ties to Holmes became public, Cruise professed his love for the actress in a now-famous appearance on The Oprah Winfrey Show, during which he jumped on Winfrey's sofa, shouting "Yes!"

Marriage to Katie Holmes

In June 2005, after a two-month courtship, Cruise proposed to Holmes in a restaurant at the top of the Eiffel tower. In October, they announced that they were expecting their first child together. The hasty proposal and surprise pregnancy quickly became tabloid gossip. But Cruise made even bigger headlines that year as an outspoken advocate for Scientology. He openly criticized former co-star Brooke Shields for using anti-depressants during her recovery from postpartum depression. He also denounced psychiatry and modern medicine, claiming Scientology held the key to true healing. Cruise's statements led to a heated argument with news anchor Matt Lauer on The Today Show in June 2005, for which Cruise later apologized.

In 2006, Cruise and Holmes welcomed daughter Suri into the world. That year, they were married in an Italian castle, with celebrities Will Smith , Jada Pinkett Smith , Jennifer Lopez and Victoria and David Beckham among those in attendance. However, the storybook romance wouldn't last, and in June 2012, the couple announced their separation.

Inside Tom Cruise's Relationship With Mimi Rogers

Tom Cruise smiling

Tom Cruise is one of the biggest movie stars on the planet. With notable roles in movies like "Top Gun," "Mission Impossible," and "Jerry Maguire," Cruise has been a leading man in Hollywood since the 1980s. Perhaps known for his personal life as much as he's known for his professional career, Cruise has made headlines over the years for his belief in Scientology, as well as for his romantic partnerships with various Hollywood starlets.

Cruise has had two highly publicized marriages in the past — one to actress Nicole Kidman and another to actress Katie Holmes . Everyone recalls the time when Cruise excitedly, and strangely, jumped on Oprah's couch in a 2005 television appearance after he was asked about his romance with Holmes (via YouTube ). But long before Cruise was jumping up and down over his love for the former "Dawson's Creek" star, he was involved in a quiet marriage to actress Mimi Rogers. The two wed in the late 1980s, when Rogers was a television star in her own right, so why isn't there more attention on this past union?

The history of Tom Cruise and Mimi Rogers' relationship

Tom Cruise and Mimi Rogers have varying accounts about how they met. Cruise insists they met at a dinner party while he was developing "Top Gun," whereas Rogers stated that the two were set up by mutual friends. "I wasn't seeing anybody, he wasn't seeing anybody, and they thought, 'These people should be going out with somebody — let's see if they want to go out with each other ... And we said, 'Aw, what the heck'" (via the  Sun Sentinel ). Regardless of how they were actually introduced, Cruise and Rogers hit it off almost immediately.

The two discussed the idea of marriage pretty early on in their relationship, and it's widely believed that Rogers is the one who initially introduced Cruise to Scientology (via E! ). They decided to wed in secret in May 1987 to avoid the onslaught of press and media attention they had been garnering since making their public debut. Reportedly, the only two people in attendance at the wedding were Cruise's mother and his best man, Emilio Estevez (via Entertainment Weekly ). Though it seemed like the pair were well matched, they eventually parted ways three years later in 1990.

The pair tells very different tales about their split

The media speculation surrounding Tom Cruise's divorce from Mimi Rogers in 1990 was as wild as you'd imagine. There were rumors that Rogers was jealous of Cruise's stardom, that perhaps their six-year age gap was too substantial, or that Rogers had grown tired of constantly being referred to as "Tom Cruise's Wife" in the press (via Entertainment Weekly ). Since Cruise never offered any insight as to what his perspective was on the divorce, the actual cause is down to mere speculation.

When announcing their divorce, the two released a statement that was more confusing than it was clarifying, saying, "While there have been positive aspects to our marriage, there were some issues which could not be resolved even after working on them for a period of time" (via InStyle ). This was seemingly the end of the matter, until Rogers gave an interview to Playboy in 1993 where she stated that the reason for their divorce was rooted in Cruise's desire to become a monk. "Well, here's the real story. Tom was seriously thinking of becoming a monk. At least for that period of time, it looked as though marriage wouldn't fit into his overall spiritual need" (via E! ). Whether Cruise was really considering the prospect of becoming a monk or these two just wanted different things, the mystery will seemingly remain unsolved.

Kate Middleton

During his speech at the event, Prince William directly addressed Cruise during the fundraising appeal for new aircraft.

"I should also take this opportunity to give a mention to my — our — fellow pilot, Tom Cruise," the royal said. "Tom, huge thanks for supporting us tonight. And Tom, if you wouldn't mind not borrowing either of the new helicopters for the next  Mission Impossible , it would be appreciated. We have all seen on our screens that — how can I put it — you seem to have a different take on 'normal wear and tear' to the rest of us. It's not the kind that buffs out."

Katie Holmes and Tom Cruise

When people think of the 2000s, obviously, a lot comes to mind. Looking past the questionable fashion choices and our obsession with everything pink, everyone was really obsessed with the “It” couples of the decade: Jennifer Lopez and Ben Affleck , Rachel McAdams and Ryan Gosling, and, perhaps most of all, Katie Holmes and Tom Cruise (AKA TomKat), who married 16 years ago on November 18, 2006.

Let’s face it; whether you loved them or hated them, everyone was paying attention. Their whirlwind romance started in 2005, and within two months, they were ready to tie the knot . Then came love, marriage, and a baby carriage — just not in that order. Soon after they announced their engagement, they also announced they were expecting their daughter Suri Cruise .

They seemed like a simple, happy family, from their Italian fairytale wedding to their many smiling red-carpet appearances. But some people got a weird vibe, especially after Cruise’s Scientology activities went viral, and some worried Holmes was trapped in the marriage.

Then, after nearly six years of marriage, Holmes filed for divorce in 2012 — and everyone had so many questions. What was 2000s royalty became another celebrity divorce that broke our hearts.

Learn more about their turbulent relationship and divorce timeline, and see some photos of the pair together below.

Tom Cruise Has Reportedly Quit Scientology After It Kept Him From Seeing His Daughter Suri For Years

  • Tom Cruise has reportedly distanced himself from the Church of Scientology, possibly ending his long-standing affiliation with the controversial religion.
  • The Church of Scientology has played a significant role in Tom Cruise's personal life, including his divorces and his relationship with his daughter Suri.
  • While Tom's two eldest children remain devoted members of the Church, his rumored departure may strain relationships within his family.

Tom Cruise has been a high-profile member of the Church of Scientology for decades, and his eldest two kids have also become active members. But Tom has reportedly quit the church after allowing it to control his life for years.

As per The Mirror , Tom has been primarily in the UK the last three years filming his latest movies. While he’s been photographed around places like Birmingham and Cotswolds, it’s reported that he’s stopped visiting the UK Scientology headquarters. He also hasn’t been pictured at the Church of Scientology building in central London.

This is fuelling speculation that the actor is distancing himself from Scientology. Reports of this first began in 2021, when Tom was apparently having a “religious crisis.”

RELATED: These Tom Cruise Movies Have Grossed Over $100 Million At The Box Office

Tom Doesn’t Have A Relationship With Suri Because Of Scientology

Tom hasn’t responded to the speculation thus far, but it’s shocking when considering how involved the Church has been in his personal life. Scientology allegedly played a role in his divorces from Nicole Kidman and Katie Holmes , and it’s highly speculated that it’s also kept him away from his and Katie’s daughter, Suri, 17.

Katie filed for divorce from Tom in 2012 after 7 years of marriage and it was finalized within a matter of weeks. Katie got a generous settlement --- $400,000 a month until Suri turns 18 —and, more importantly, sole custody of their daughter.

Reports said the divorce was fuelled by Katie’s desire to escape Scientology’s influence on her family (and the pressure to convert). She enrolled Suri in a Catholic school shortly after the split.

RELATED: Tom Cruise Refused To Let Harvey Weinstein Ruin His Friend's Film

With Tom agreeing to give Katie full custody, it appears he also agreed to not have contact with Suri while she’s a minor, likely due to his and Katie’s conflict about Scientology.

But now with reports that Tom is leaving the Church, perhaps he’ll try rekindling a relationship with Suri, even though it’s apparently been a decade since he last saw her .

Tom’s Oldest Daughter Is A High-Ranking Church Member

While Tom may be quitting Scientology, his two eldest children remain heavily involved in the religion. In 2019, his daughter Isabella reveals she was promoted to being an auditor , the person who questions other Scientologists about their personal live. In a promotional video, she says the religion saved her life.

“It’s a few meltdowns and running to the bathroom to have a mini episode, but it is worth everything because you will get through,” Isabella explained. “This is a gift to yourself and so many others. It doesn’t matter if you aren’t going to be an auditor or aren’t going to join staff. If you are going to make it as a being for the long run you NEED this. That’s the truth… so stop messing around and get going.”

Tom’s oldest kids lived with him following his divorce from their mother, Nicole Kidman, explaining their entrenchment in the Scientology faith. But if Tom truly is walking away from the controversial religion, it could put a divide In between their relationship, though it could improve things between him and Suri.

Tom Cruise Is a London Boy

Portrait of Jason P. Frank

Sometimes when God closes a door (Taylor Swift says “So long” ), She opens a window (Tom Cruise does the splits). Cruise is living that life in London, and for him that means break-dancing, doing the splits, and watching the British absolutely lose their crumpets. Cruise has lived in London since 2021 and has, in that time, been at the former queen’s Platinum Jubilee, the British Grand Prix, according to the Mercury News . And now he has attended the most British event of all: Posh Spice’s birthday party. Fortunately, he still has the American propensity to do the most. While at the party, Cruise began break-dancing and ended his routine by doing the splits, according to the Daily Mail . “People were absolutely dumbfounded,” a source mentioned. All we’ll say about that is that if there’s one thing the Mission: Impossible franchise could do to s ecure those Imax screens , it just might be a (gay?) club scene in which Cruise distracts the bad guys by jumping into the splits like a Drag Race contestant. Just an idea.

Tom Cruise brought down the house at Victoria Beckham’s star-studded 50th birthday party .

The “Top Gun: Maverick” star, 61, “absolutely dumbfounded” guests Saturday night by breakdancing and doing splits, a fellow partygoer told the Daily Mail Monday.

Cruise, who has known Victoria and her husband, David Beckham, for nearly two decades, has been living in the UK while filming “Mission Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part Two,” which is expected to hit theaters next year.

The “Risky Business” star was dressed to the nines for the occasion in a classic black tuxedo with a bow tie and shiny black shoes.

Cruise was far from the only A-lister who attended Victoria’s grand fête in London.

All of the fashion designer’s fellow Spice Girls — Melanie “Mel C” Chisholm, Emma Bunton, Geri Halliwell and Melanie “Mel B” Brown — also showed up for the festivities.

The girl group even staged an impromptu reunion to perform their 1997 hit song “Stop” for the attendees.

Victoria had her party at the private members’ club Oswald’s and stunned in a celestial sheer mint gown featuring ruffled details along the hem.

The guest of honor arrived on crutches after breaking her foot during a workout earlier this year, but she did not let the injury stop her from going all out for her milestone birthday.

She was joined by her athlete husband, who was dressed in a tux, as well as their four children: sons Brooklyn, 25, Romeo, 21, and Cruz, 19, and daughter Harper, 12.

Other stars at the soirée included Gordon Ramsay and Eva Longoria.

Notably absent from the momentous occasion was Brooklyn’s wife, Nicola Peltz, who instead spent time with her grandmother .

The “Bates Motel” actress, 29, shared a photo with her grandma on her Instagram Story but also made sure to send her mother-in-law some birthday love.

They allegedly butted heads over wedding planning, and tensions were also high after the bride decided to wear a wedding gown not made by Victoria’s fashion house.

However, Peltz denied she had any beef with the former pop star and explained that she could not wear a dress by Victoria’s eponymous brand due to timing issues.

“I was going to and I really wanted to, and then a few months down the line, she realized that her atelier couldn’t do it, so then I had to pick another dress,” she  told Variety  at the time.

“She didn’t say ‘you can’t wear it;’ I didn’t say I didn’t want to wear it. That’s where it started, and then they ran with that.”

Brooklyn also  denied there was any bad blood between his wife and mom.

Victoria and Peltz appear to have mended their relationship, as they have posted sweet messages about each other on social media numerous times since.

The Watchmen Character Tom Cruise Wanted To Play, According To Zack Snyder

Watchmen team standing

Zack Snyder's "Watchmen" flick could have looked drastically different if Tom Cruise played one key role. One of the most divisive films in Snyder's filmography, "Watchmen" didn't have a huge A-list cast, despite boasting a budget north of $130 million– rare for a blockbuster of its caliber. However, if Snyder had gotten his wish, Cruise, Hollywood's last great action star , would have had a pivotal role in the superhero flick. While speaking with Josh Horowitz for "Happy Sad Confused," the director revealed that he wanted the "Top Gun: Maverick" actor for Ozymandias, a role that didn't interest the actor. "Tom wanted to play Rorschach, which obviously he could have done, but we had Jackie [Earle Haley] already, and Jackie's unbelievable."

The role of Ozymandias ultimately went to Matthew Goode, a rising actor at the time. It's interesting how Cruise, known for his mostly safe and calculated roles, was interested in playing Rorschach, one of the most complicated and devious characters in the "Watchmen" mythos. Rorschach is also masked for most of his scenes, meaning audiences wouldn't have seen Cruise's face for most of the film's runtime. For what it's worth, Haley was praised for his nefarious turn as Rorschach, with /Film  commending his performance in an 8.5/10 review of "Watchmen" in 2009.

While it's hard to imagine anyone other than Haley stepping into the shoes of Rorschach, Snyder does think Cruise could have been an interesting addition to the roster. "I certainly would have considered Tom in retrospect, if I hadn't had Jackie," Snyder told Horowitz.

Tom Crusie would have been a great Ozymandias

"Watchmen" could have been a different beast altogether if Tom Cruise had starred in the film. One of the most bankable actors of all time, Cruise's inclusion in the film, especially as the non-masked Ozymandias, could have elevated the film's financial viability. "Watchmen" grossed shy of $190 million worldwide, emerging as one of Zack Snyder's biggest box office flops . Despite poor financial receipts, "Watchmen" stands out as a cult favorite for Snyder fans and is one of the most interesting and bold films in the superhero canon.

In a chat with  Newsday in 2009, Snyder admitted that he had difficulty casting Ozymandias because of how unique the character's traits were. "We were having a hard time casting [the role], because we needed someone handsome, beautiful and sophisticated, and that's a tough combo," Snyder said. While he was probably intrigued with tackling a complex character like Rorschach, it's unclear why Cruise didn't jump for the Ozymandias role. On paper, Cruise is the perfect choice for Ozymandias, a character who is known for his charm and striking looks. There's no better fit for that description than Cruise, but alas, the "Mission: Impossible" actor wasn't interested. "Watchmen" would have also served as the actor's superhero debut, something fans have been wanting to see for years.

It's unclear how the actor started chatting with the director about "Watchmen," but it probably stemmed from  the surprising phone call Snyder received from Cruise thanks to "300" and its wild success.

Quentin Tarantino's Movie Critic gets disappointing Tom Cruise update

Quentin Tarantino allegedly did not meet with Tom Cruise for a role in The Movie Critic.

Andrew Korpan

Tom Cruise and The Movie Critic director Quentin Tarantino in front of Hollywood.

Quentin Tarantino ‘s The Movie Critic was rumored to have Tom Cruise in its cast. However, a recent report has clarified a lot about the now-scrapped film.

The Hollywood Reporter ran a story about the behind-the-scenes workings of The Movie Critic. One of the biggest revelations is that Tom Cruise was never approached for the film. Sources told THR that “Cruise hadn't even met with the filmmaker for a role.”

Additionally, Paul Walter Houser's involvement was also shot down. A source who is close to the actor said that “he was never involved.”

The likes of John Travolta, Jamie Foxx, and Margot Robbie, who appeared in Tarantino's Pulp Fiction, Django Unchained, and Once Upon a Time in Hollywood, were also rumored to be in the film. Their involvement would have brought together several of Tarantino's past collaborators for his final film. That no longer seems to be the case.

However, Olivia Wilde, known for directing Booksmart, allegedly did meet with Tarantino. THR notes, though, that it's unclear if “that was for a role or just a general meeting.” A source attached Wilde to a role in a draft of The Movie Critic.

Tom Cruise has never worked with Tarantino before. He's primarily known for his work in the Mission: Impossible franchise as well as the Top Gun franchise. Cruise has also starred in Rain Man, Risky Business, Jerry Maguire, and Minority Report.

What was The Movie Critic going to be about?

Plot details for The Movie Critic are unknown. Sources added to THR's report that Tarantino was potentially toying with the idea of saying goodbye with a cinematic universe event.

Certain characters from his earlier work could have been brought back to reprise their roles as characters in “movie within a movie” moments. Another possibility was that the actors could play “fictional versions of themselves as the actors who played these characters.”

One more possibility was the most bonkers of them all. Tarantino could have featured a 16-year-old version of himself, who worked as an usher at a Torrence adult film theater as a teen. Some of the characters from Tarantino's older films could interact with his younger self in a movie theater.

But the film is now scrapped, and Tarantino will come up with new ideas for his final feature film. For years, Tarantino has claimed that he will stop making feature films once he's made his tenth. He has stayed true to his word if you include Kill Bill as one whole film and not a two-part venture.

Quentin Tarantino is one of the most iconic filmmakers of his generation. He made his directorial debut in 1992, writing and directing Reservoir Dogs. His next three films were also distributed by Miramax before he made Death Proof in 2007 for Dimension Films.

Since then, Tarantino has been bringing his work to various studios. Inglourious Basterds was distributed by The Weinstein Company and Universal. His next film, Django Unchained, was released by The Weinstein Company and Sony. The Hateful Eight was also released by The Weinstein Company before Once Upon a Time in Hollywood was a Sony release.

He is known for working with his frequent collaborators. Zoë Bell, Samuel L. Jackson, Michael Madsen, and Brad Pitt are just a few of the names who have frequently collaborated with Tarantino.
