By  Ramadhani Ismail

What you need to know:

  • The Bongo rapper hits the jackpot in painting a picture of a street hustler’s life through his song

Music has a way of communicating and bringing people to a common ground. This is evident with Abdu Hamid Said’s song ‘Champion’ released about a month ago, making it to the list of songs that truly hit home.

There is one line that says ‘Nshazika wanangu nilowapenda’ Swahili for I’ve buried a couple of my loved ones. The line has several comments from music fans in different social media platforms, most fans mentioning their lost friends and loved ones.

Going by the stage name, Kontawa, the upcoming hip-hop artiste and songwriter officially ushered into the Bongoflava music industry in 2019 with his music song ‘Sura Ya Baba’.

It takes passion and know-how to manage a talent

kontawa safari ya zanzibar

“Before writing the song ‘Champion’ I was just coming back from a show in Iringa and being all new to the industry I didn’t think people knew me. Turns out I had many fans and most people loved my songs,” shares Kontawa

Adding that, that gave him so much hope and, “I said to myself that I am a champion, it doesn’t matter how many steps I took, or how long I have been in the industry. That was also the message I wanted to send to my fans, we are champions!” he says

Before being known as Kontawa, he went by the name A.B.A short form for Amazing Boy from Africa but fans and broadcasters couldn’t pronounce his name properly and there was another music artiste and producer with a similar name to his.

“I had to find a new stage name and I picked Kontawa because people from my street used to call me that referring to how I would behave around my peers. I officially introduced the name Kontawa after releasing ‘Sura Ya Baba’ visuals,” explains Kontawa.

Born in a family of five children, Kontawa couldn’t continue with his ordinary level education because of the financial situation in his family.

“I started street hustle, selling second hand clothes in Kariakoo,” he explains.

To earn a living he had to work as a hawker, apart from selling second-hand clothes, he also worked with different companies where he would sell and do deliveries of their products to customers.

Growing up, Kontawa recalls that one of his biggest dreams was to become a construction engineer.

Two years after finishing secondary school and participating at different rap competitions, Kontawa discovered that he has a talent for singing and decided to pursue that passion further.

With no background or dreams in the past, he turned to music and chose it as his next career.

“After staying home for a year, it made me rethink things, career wise. I remember doing a rap- battle with a friend of mine who I knew was better at it but I won. That somehow made me feel that I could do more with rap,” he explains.

He later started to participate in different rap and singing competitions and concerts as a dare to a friend which nurtured his passion even more for a talent he never thought he had.

Kontawa gained prominence after releasing his first song, ‘Sura ya Baba’.

In a short while he had released a number of songs including ‘Moyo’, ‘Mke’, ‘Bastola’, and ‘Daktari’.

Speaking about his current hit single, ‘Champion’ with its virtual trending second on the global video platform, YouTube, trend for music. Kontawa narrates that the fruit came after he visited Iringa for the first time.

Kontawa says that the love he received from fans made him write ‘Champion’.

“I was so emotional when I wrote Champion. Love and positive vibes from fans made me feel different, different from where I used to be,” he says.

He further added that he didn’t want to collaborate with anyone but when Nay Wa Mitego heard the song, it hit him differently and made him jump on the song with his life story.

The same goes for the remix version, featuring Harmonize.

Just like ‘Champion’ Kontawa shares that he channels inspiration for his songs from different people, movies and home stories.

“Sometimes when I want to write a song, I normally watch Lionel Messi video clips or Ronaldo. Following their achievements, ups and downs to where they are now and it would inspire me more,” he narrates.

Kontawa says he is ending the year with ‘Champion’ but has a surprise for fans on December 24, a day before Christmas.

But next year will be a back-to-back year for the rising Bongo Flava champion.

Zanzibar safari tours

A safari tour package in Tanzania is typically organized by a tour operator, safari tour company or via a self drive Africa safari trip, taking into consideration the number of days visitors would like to allocate for beach time and safari activities.

Given the distance between parks, it is important to take many elements into account when visitors plan their Zanzibar safari and beach tour including:

  • Which animals you would like to see
  • Budget for the trip
  • Travel party (solo, with friends or a larger family group)
  • Activities you would like to include (hot air balloon, hiking)
  • Beaches you would like to see as there are many great beaches in Zanzibar which visitors enjoy as well as the nearby islands of Pamunda , Pemba island , Chumbe and Unguja Island .

Best time to go on a beach and safari in Zanzibar

Tanzania is a beautiful country to visit, regardless of the season and popular with visitors from the U.S, Europe and South Africa.

Certain periods are more favorable for a safari in the best conditions. To know the best time to visit Zanzibar , visitors should take into consideration the following key criteria:

  • Regions visited
  • Weather conditions

The best time to visit Zanzibar for a beach and safari trip is during the dry season, from late June to October. The Zanzibar beaches are dry with no rains and the summer months are ideal for the Great Wildebeest Migration river crossings and impressive wildlife sightings.

Zanzibar and Tanzania safari cost

Tanzania is a premier safari destination in Africa, thus incurring the more expensive costs associated with this.

There are multiple factors that can impact the cost of a safari in Tanzania including accommodation selected, trip duration, safari costs, tours, flight transfers from Zanzibar island to game reserves on the mainland, transfers, meal options and additional activities visitors may request.

Travellers on a budget can reduce costs by booking their own flights, accommodation and the best things to do in Zanzibar as well as hiring a 4*4 to travel between the parks and reserves.

Organizing your safari

There are a number of different options available for organizing your Zanzibar holiday and Tanzania safari including:

Tour operators

The biggest tour operators will offer safaris in Tanzania where visitors can book a package that will cover their flight, transport, accommodation, activities and food, an ideal option for those with no previous safari experience in preparing for such a trip.

Safari travel agencies

Visitors will often find dedicated safari travel agencies to be the best option in booking their dream safari. These agencies have many years experience in booking safaris as well as multiple partnerships with local tourism networks and lodges/game reserves.

Travel agencies typically offer:

  • Local tour guides
  • Trips to must-see wildlife areas and parks
  • All transportation from Stone Town in Zanzibar to the game reserve
  • High quality accommodation at reduced prices
  • Day safaris and full day itineraries customised to your requirements

The cost of the service of these specialized agencies can be a bit higher compared to other options, a cost worth bearing given the quality and ease of services provided.

Organizing your own safari is possible but only recommended for more experienced travelers and visitors on a strict budget.

Accommodation

Visitors typically will have the choice between lodges, chalets and campsites as well as African tent camps, suites and bedrooms.

Luxurious facilities are common including swimming pools, restaurants, bars, spas and terraces. Game viewings and plane transfers are organized by the accommodation providers.

Trip preparation

Travellers can fly to Zanzibar via the island’s main airport (ZNZ) for visitors wondering how to get to Zanzibar .

A tourist visa is required to enter Zanzibar for U.S, U.K, Canada and EU citizens. Tanzania has introduced an ‘e-visas’ system through which applications can be submitted and approved online in advance of travel.

It is also possible to get a tourist or business visa for a single entry on arrival at main ports of entry to Tanzania, subject to the fulfilment of all immigration requirements. Visitors may also be asked to provide proof of their return journey.

A visitor’s passport must be valid for at least 6 months with at least one free blank page and and certain vaccinations may also be required to enter the country.

The CDC and WHO recommend the following vaccinations for Zanzibar and Tanzania: Covid-19, Hepatitis A, hepatitis B, typhoid, rabies, meningitis, polio, measles, mumps and rubella (MMR), Tdap (tetanus, diphtheria and pertussis), chickenpox, shingles, pneumonia and influenza.

Most safari parks are high-risk zones. The highest risk of transition is in the rainy season from November to May.

Further details on Zanzibar vaccine & covid info here .

USD $1/GBP £0.75 =  Approximately 2,322 TZS.

Carrying a small amount of Zanzibar currency , the Tanzania Shilling (TZS) is recommended as back-up when paying for items where credit card facilities are unavailable.

Driving in Zanzibar and Tanzania

Driving is conducted on the left hand side of the road in Zanzibar and driving is generally considered to be safe.

Visitors driving through parks may require a 4×4, whilst carrying a map & GPS is recommended.

Guide To Planning A Safari Holiday in Tanzania & Zanzibar

Tanzania lies on the east coast of Africa, and it offers the finest safari holiday trip , easily combined with a wide range of Indian Ocean beaches. In our opinion, it really is the best vacation destination in Africa to combine a big five safari with the glorious beach holidays . Additionally, getting around the country is extremely easy, with loads of light aircraft flights hopping between the various areas.

In summary, a Tanzania safari holiday trip has three main bits; the north, the south, and its various beaches and islands.

Northern Tanzania safari circuit includes the world-famous Serengeti, home to the great wildebeest migration, the Ngorongoro crater, Mount Kilimanjaro, and the smaller parts of Lake Manyara and Tarangire.

The south safari circuit is home to the much less visited parks of Ruaha and Selous, and in the southwest, the even more remote parks of Mohali and Katavi.

For beaches , most people head to the spice island of Zanzibar . Still, there are many other options, such as the mainland coast and other nearby islands.

The incredible great wildebeest migration in northern Tanzania in the Serengeti, which you can watch all year round.

A Safari Holiday Trip in Northern Tanzania

Most people spend their first night in Arusha after arriving at Kilimanjaro International Airport. The next day is a short drive through the culture-rich Ngorongoro highlands to the Ngorongoro Crater . Impressive as a crater is, with significant concentrations of the big five, it attracts large herds of tourists. So we don’t recommend more than a full day’s game drive here with an overnight on either side before flying to the Serengeti National Reserve.

The Serengeti is arguably Tanzania’s biggest safari drawcard with unbelievable wildlife viewing. It’s the place to see the big five and the big cats . Game viewing is effortless due to the Reserve’s vast short grass plains. The Serengeti is made famous by countless films such as The Lion King and Out of Africa. Most outstanding is the great wildebeest migration, which you can watch all year round. However, the river crossings are specific to the north of the Serengeti and occur only in the summer.

We recommend spending the bulk of your safari time in the Serengeti. Suppose you have more than a week on your safari holiday trip in Tanzania. In that case, you can also visit Tarangire and Lake Manyara for a gentle warm-up en route to the crater. An afternoon is enough to see Lake Manyara. Still, Tarangire needs a couple of nights to make the safari trip worthwhile, and it is best in the summer months when the elephants make their way through the park.

For some, Mount Kilimanjaro is a big part of their safari holiday trip to Tanzania. The mountain takes seven to eight days to climb, depending on the route chosen. However, if you’re not planning on climbing it, then the best views of the mountain are from far away.

Cost-wise, safaris in the northern parks range from about $600 per person per night for somewhere like Chaka Camp, one of our best value favorites, to $1,400 per night for, somewhere like, Nomad Lamai. And up to $2,700 per person per night for one of Africa’s most expensive camps; Sasakwa.

Off the beaten path safari holiday experience at Jongomero Camp in Tanzania's Ruaha National Park

Planning a Safari Holiday in Southern Tanzania

Here you can arrive at Dar-es-salaam and be on safari the very same day. The Selous is a vast park where you can boat, walk, and sleep out under the stars and Ruaha offers walking and night drives, all in addition to standard game drives.

With as few as eight camps in each Park, Southern Tanzania is ideal for adventurers who want the off-the-beaten-track experience with calming privacy . We cannot express how wild and authentic safaris in the south are. We love the combination of Selous and Ruaha. Southern Tanzania destinations make Kenya’s Masai Mara feel like a zoo in comparison. Seeing another vehicle is rare, and the game viewing is fantastic. However, there is no Great Wildebeest Migration in the south.

Price-wise, the south represents excellent value for money, with lodges ranging from $400 per person per night for the Selous Serena to Jongomero at $700 per night, to the top-end somewhere like Beho Beho at $1,100 per person per night.

Fewer people head deep into the country’s southwest to Mahali Mountains and Katavi—mainly because of the cost and infrequency of the internal flights. Nonetheless, Mahali is one the best places in Africa for viewing wild chimpanzees, and Katavi has incredible wildlife in the safari summer months. Think getting off the grid into Africa’s remotest safari holiday destination with emerald beaches and forest jungles that you can only access by boat. In high season, seven nights in this place cost about $9,000 per person.

From the parks in the south, you can be lying on an Indian Ocean’s beach within a couple of hours, which leads us neatly to our final area, the beaches and Islands of Tanzania.

Tanzania's Beaches & Island Holidays

Tanzania’s Beaches & Island Holidays

Nothing beats some Indian Ocean Beach time either before or after your Safari Holiday Trip in Tanzania’s countryside or even both. The island of Zanzibar is the most popular destination and boasts fantastic beaches, marvelous diving, and characterful boutique hotels. However, a lot of the coastline is hugely tidal, and many hotels are relatively mediocre.

Having seen them all, we recommend only a few of Zanzibar’s hotels, so it really is worth chatting to a Tanzania safari holiday expert to ensure you’re making the right decision.

Prices for hotels in Zanzibar range from about $180 per person per night at an excellent beach hotel such as Pongwe to $500 per person per night at one of Xanadu’s private villas.

Zanzibar’s Stone Town is the place to go for a bit of culture, but it is pretty hectic. So we recommend a maximum of just two nights here. Or, if you don’t want to stay in the chaos, you can visit Stone Town on a day trip from your Beach Hotel.

Let’s say you want a quieter experience than Zanzibar. In that case, you should look at the mainland coast, largely undeveloped apart from a handful of lodges. One such is Rus Kutani—which we think is the ultimate honeymoon spot and one of our firm favorites at $400 per person per night.

Less visited are the islands of Pemba and Mafia, with great diving and underwater activities. However, the beaches are far worse than those in Zanzibar.

Finally, there are a couple of private island options; Fanjove at $400 per person per night and Mnemba Island at an impressive $1,700 per person per night. Both are idyllic, and in our view, two of the very best islands in the whole of the Indian Ocean.

Watching the mountain gorilla silverback a few meters is one of Africa's most exhilarating safari experiences

Serengeti Safari & Mountain Gorillas in Uganda/Rwanda

Imagine combining two of the most iconic Africa safari holiday experiences, gorilla trekking and wildlife safari in the Serengeti ; we promised Africa would stay with you for a lifetime. Hiking into the misty rainforest jungles of Uganda, searching for the mountain gorilla, and spending one incredible hour sitting a couple of meters silently away will change your intimate connection with wildlife forever. Adding that to watching millions of wildebeests crossing the Serengeti plains stalked by myriad predators, including big cats, is a top bucket list adventure in Africa.

Fly into Kigali, spend a night, and transfer to Volcanoes National Park , where you’ll spend two nights at an idyllic forest lodge. Take a gorilla trekking excursion early the next day and return to the lodge for a relaxed evening. Treks into the jungle are physically demanding, so prepare your body a couple of months before the trip.

Connect your flight from Kigali directly to Serengeti National Reserve for another exhilarating safari holiday experience in Tanzania. Alternatively, you can trek Uganda’s rainforest and spend more than four hours with the gorillas (Rwanda allows for only one hour) on a gorilla habituation experience.

Cost-wise, you’ll spend more on gorilla permits and accommodation in Rwanda than in Uganda. Rwanda prices the gorilla permit at $1500 per person, while Uganda at $700. The gorilla habituation experience in Uganda costs $1,500 per person.

Accommodations in Rwanda ’s Volcanoes are at a high-end cost of about $1,700 per night in luxury lodges like Bisate, Virunga, and Singita Kwitonda. Uganda gorilla lodges cost less at about $300 per person per night in Nkuringo Bwindi Gorilla Lodge .

The name itself has captivated travellers imagination over the years and certainly lives up to expectations. Alongside the idyllic, crystal clear sea and vibrant reefs, excellent for diving, the island has a rich cultural and historical offering, particularly within the old Stone Town.

Further Insight On Zanzibar

Zanzibar is very combinable with a safari in East Africa and tends to be an ideal beach bolt on to safaris in Tanzania and Kenya.

Zanzibar holidays offer a real mix of accommodation choices with many of our favourites being the smaller boutique lodges offering a true Zanzibari experience. However, there are one or two resort-style hotels that offer a wider choice of activities and are often more suitable for families.

The archipelago’s turquoise seas are as stunning below as above the water line allowing for some magnificent diving. Manta rays, green turtles, hawksbill plus barracudas add to the array of colour with opportunities for wall dives nearer Pemba.

Zanzibar has seen a growth in visitor numbers in recent years but fortunately has remained relatively unspoiled or exploited. To really enjoy your time on the island it is important to find the right style and character of accommodation to suit you. The range is broad from large mainstream resorts to small exclusive hideaways; busy “backpackers” beach huts to private boutique guesthouses.

Click on the links in the right-hand margin for accommodation options or our favourite:

Luxury beach lodges are Matemwe Bungalows, Kilindi, Unguja Beach Lodge or Fumba Beach Lodge.

Lower cost beach guesthouses but still offering something special are Pongwe Beach, Kasha Boutique, Matemwe Beach, Shooting Star or Echo Beach.

Cool places to stay in Stone Town are Beyt Al Chai, 236 Hurumzi, Swahili House or Serena Inn.

Ultimate exclusivity at Mnemba Island.

Or if you want a resort look at: Barraza, Breezes Beach Club, Blue Bay or Ras Nungwi.

Many thanks for a truly great holiday! Nyerere National Park was a great success as we saw the wild dogs on 2 occasions and some great lion kills. In fact we saw a pride of 10 lion including cubs within 10 mins of landing in the Nyerere National Park! Zanzibar was wonderful! The sunshine hotel was beautiful and the staff were lovely.

Andrew Morton

The welcome and kindness and generosity we have received, in all of our camps and stops has been tremendous. Although we have both travelled a lot over our years together, we both agree this holiday has been outstanding, and one of the best experiences of our lives.

Tanzania Northern Parks & Zanzibar, August 2019

Thank you for organising a fabulous holiday for us – memories of which will last a lifetime. We have arrived back completely awed by Tanzania and Zanzibar. We saw the all the wildlife we could possibly wish to see. Our driver was charming and looked after us brilliantly. Lodges were excellent and food fantastic.

What can we say – Nick & James at Safari & Beach delivered our perfect honeymoon! This has been a dream for the two of us for over 10 years and Safari & Beach not only delivered, but exceeded all of our expectations. From the first call until the day we departed, nothing has been too big or small for the team at Safari & Beach to help us with – to ensure this was a trip of a lifetime

Safari from Zanzibar. Explore Tanzania's Wildlife.

If you're planning a trip to Zanzibar and want to experience the thrill of a safari, you're in luck! Tanzania is home to some of the best wildlife parks in the world, and many of them are just a short flight away from Zanzibar.

Here's everything you need to know about taking a safari from Zanzibar :

  • Safari Parks : Tanzania has several safari parks that you can visit from Zanzibar. Some of the most popular ones include Serengeti National Park, Saadani National Park and Nyerere National park, formerly Selous Game Reserve. Each of these parks has its own unique wildlife and landscapes.
  • Safari Activities : The most popular activity on a safari is a game drive, where you can explore the park and spot a variety of wildlife. We do boat safaris in Saadani and Selous, which gets you close to water based wildlife including hippos, crocodiles and large variety of birds. You can also go on guided walks, take hot air balloon rides, and visit local villages to learn about the traditional way of life in Tanzania.
  • Accommodation : All of our safari camps and lodges are small and intimate,  offering our guests an immersive and authentic African safari experience and connection with nature in a truly unique way.
  • Safari Duration : The duration of your safari can vary depending on your interests and preferences. We recommend safari range from 2-7 days, with some longer tours available for those who want to explore multiple parks.
  • Getting There : Most safari parks in Tanzania are accessible by air, and there are several flights that operate from Zanzibar to various destinations on the mainland.

taking a safari from Zanzibar is an excellent way to experience the best of Tanzania's wildlife and natural beauty. With a range of safari parks to choose from, comfortable accommodation options, and exciting activities, you're sure to have an unforgettable adventure.
