A Federation mission to the planet Ba'ku takes a dangerous turn when a malfunctioning android, Data (Brent Spiner), takes a cultural task force hostage. When Capt. Picard (Patrick Stewart) and his crew investigate, they uncover the truth about the Federation mission: It was actually a systematic ploy by the Son'a to displace the peaceful inhabitants of Ba'ku. Now Picard and his crew must thwart the plot even while experiencing strange side effects from exposure to the planet's surface.

Critic Reviews for Star Trek: Insurrection

Audience reviews for star trek: insurrection.

'Insurrection' plays very much like Star Trek's tribute to Seven Samurai. A task many films have attempted and failed to do, but with a formidable script and solid performances, I had some fun with Star Trek Insurrection. Though I enjoyed the film, I don't really understand why they changed up the formula from the previous installment, First Contact. Instead of feeling like the next step in the film series, Insurrection seemed like an extended The Next Generation episode. It doesn't take away from the quality of the film, but it does feel like the spectacle of the other films was taken out of it. Picard and his crew stumble upon a possible conspiracy on a guarded but medically advanced planet and take matters into their own hands. Unlike either of the previous two TNG films, there is a legitimate attempt at character development. For someone who wasn't a viewer of the TV series, I was grateful for it. With that said, the push for a romantic interest for both Picard and Riker felt forced. Whether it was the acting, writing, or direction the romance angle didn't feel like a natural progression of the story. Being that it does feel similar to a Seven Samurai-esque story, I found myself more attached to Data's developing relationship with the young boy from the village. As well as the increasingly intriguing story behind why there is an alien race set on abducting an entire planet of people. Both of those story points worked well. Sure, there are a few editing issues and plenty of scenes that don't work or even make sense at all, but the different approach to this Star Trek adventure proved to be all I needed to enjoy my time watching Insurrection. +Data +Interesting plot developments late in the game -Romantic subplots -Extended TV episode approach didn't always pan out 6.3/10

Step down from the exciting First Contact, Star Trek Insurrection seems to try too hard at outdoing its predecessor, and in turn loses track of what it tries to accomplish. The result is a film that leaves a lot to be desired, and what do you expect? This is the ninth film in the Star Trek film franchise, and with that being said, it's clear that the screenwriters were trying to figure out how to create something new and exciting. Unfortunately, there is nothing to really grab your attention. Insurrection isn't an awful film, but it's a disappointing affair, especially after the superb First Contact. Overall this is a decent film, that is somewhat entertaining, but like I said, it never grabs your full attention, and it's a shame because the filmmakers could really have kept the momentum going, but it also seems they were a bit too overconfident with this one, and they seemed to try and outdo previous entries, and in a way they failed to capture the essence of what makes fort a truly entertaining and ultimately memorable Star Trek film. Overall I felt that this film was decent at best, and it never realizes its potential, but in the larger view of things, this is also the ninth film in the series, so it was only a matter of time for the quality to be downgraded due to lacking ideas in terms of storyline. Fans will surely find a lot missing from the film, and in terms of a Science Fiction picture, this one just leaves you wanting more. Decent film that definitely could have been reworked a bit before getting the green light, Insurrection is one of the weaker entries in the Star Trek franchise

Even for casual Star Trek fans, "Star Trek IX: Insurrection" entertains as strictly a science fiction film as well, which just so happens to have a fully developed cast of characters supporting it. Following The Next Generation crew of the Enterprise, the story arc is simple, as the team travels to a planet that was secretly under surveillance until Data breaks the Prime Directive by revealing himself and the team, in a rogue and unexplained move. Once Data is caught and fixed, he uncovers a plan to move the inhabitants of the planet without their knowing, in order to harness the power of the planet, which acts like a fountain of youth. Touching on many topical points like cultural displacement and the rights and wrongs of certain powers, the entire crew faces moments of decision and choose their paths accordingly. Even with several inside situations like LaForge's eye implants and Worf's return, the characters continue to develop, creating a sense that this is just another extended episode of the show. Also, with a reputable villain played by F Murray Abraham, the twists that surround this character are some of the highlights of the film. Although there's nothing breakthrough or exceptional about the film, it does garner enough attention to keep you guessing through most of the run-time.

While taking part in an undercover mission away from the USS Enterprise, Data (Spiner) malfunctions, removing the invisibility cloak Starfleet are using to observe a race known as the Ba'ku. When the Enterprise is called to capture Data, Picard (Stewart) insists on investigating the planet, against Starfleet's will. He discovers the Baku are an immortal race, so long as they remain on their planet. Starfleet, however, are working alongside another race, the So'na, to harvest the planet's radiation for scientific purposes; an act that will result in the planet's destruction. Picard and members of his crew take a stand with the Ba'ku to protect their world. If 'Generations' had made Trek fans doubt the future of the series without Shatner et al, 'First Contact' provided fresh hope. With Frakes returning as director, the buzz surrounding the release of 'Insurrection' was extremely positive, but ultimately misguided. While it's by no means a bad movie, it's a massive step back in quality from its immediate predecessor, and would mark the beginning of the end of big-screen Trek, at least in its classic form. The largest criticism of 'Insurrection' is that it resembles a two-part episode of 'The Next Generation'. To a degree, this is certainly true. The concept of an idyllic utopia under threat had cropped up in many episodes of both the original series and 'TNG', and had become a cliche, something of a fallback theme for uninspired writers. Despite this, there are some interesting ideas introduced here. The most impressive scene involves the discovery of a secret holodeck, fitted to resemble the village home of the planet's natives, in which Starfleet plan to rehouse the Ba'ku after the destruction of their homeworld. There are several small yet impressive moments in the movie's first half. Picard's discovery of the planet's anti-aging powers is handled ingenuously, with the captain about to have a shave before discovering his facial hair has failed to grow during his stay on the planet. If the film had carried on in this subtle manner, it would indeed resemble a double episode, and a pretty good one at that. Unfortunately, the producers' desire to reach as wide an audience as possible results in a second half full of tiresome space battles, a pattern we would see repeated in the next installment, three years later. Again, Frakes does a fine job from the director's chair and it's a shame his career never kicked on. I'd take a Frakes directed blockbuster any day over one from the likes of Zack Snyder or McG. As with 'First Contact', this is very much Picard's film, and Stewart really seems to be enjoying his new action-hero role. He even gets a love interest here and Stewart proves quite a charming presence. Again, you have to ask why he didn't get more roles after this? Looking back now, 'Insurrection' is most interesting as a pre-911 curiosity piece. With the crew of the Enterprise taking up the cause of a group of insurgents who hide out in caves while fighting a super-power, it's hard to imagine this plot getting the green-light today.

Here's our Star Trek streaming guide, so you know where to go boldly where you've never gone before... Without leaving your sofa. We've come up with this Star Trek streaming guide because since the first ever episode aired back in 1966, there's been  a huge number of additions into the franchise.

Star Trek is currently in a bit of a purple patch for content as Paramount Plus , which is the home of all things Star Trek, is responsible for several new shows in recent years. But, it's not just new content, you'll also find where to stream the classics both movies and TV series below.

Before, Star Trek content was scattered all around different streaming services and searching for what you wanted to watch could feel like hunting for a cloaked Bird of Prey. However, these days you're able to stream all Star Trek content out there on Paramount Plus. However, we do have round-ups of the best sci-fi movies and TV shows on Netflix , Disney Plus and Amazon if you want to check them out.

You can also check out our take on the Star Trek movies, ranked so you know which movies to beam up onto your device. While Paramount Plus has everything Star Trek out there, you can find the odd bit of content on other platforms. So, below you'll find where you can watch what, regardless of where you're based, in our Star Trek streaming guide.

Walter Koenig, Leonard Nimoy, William Shatner, James Doohan, DeForest Kelley, George Takei, and Nichelle Nichols in Star Trek IV The Voyage Home (1986)_Paramount Pictures

The Star Trek movies can be divided into three tidy groups: the original cast, the Next Generation cast, and the reboot cast. All of them can be found on Paramount+. However, Paramount+ isn't the only place you can stream the movies and in some cases you can rent or buy from places such as Amazon .

Here’s how to stream the Star Trek movies in the U.S., in order of release:

Star Trek: The Motion Picture — Paramount+ Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan — Paramount+ Star Trek III: The Search for Spock — Paramount+ Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home — Paramount+ Star Trek V: The Final Frontier — Paramount+ Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country — Paramount+ Star Trek: Generations — Paramount+ Star Trek: First Contact — Paramount+ Star Trek: Insurrection — Paramount+ , Spectrum Star Trek: Nemesis — Paramount+   Star Trek (2009) — Paramount+ , Pluto TV Star Trek Into Darkness — Paramount+ , Pluto TV Star Trek Beyond — Paramount+ , DIRECTV , Freevee

If you’re a Trekkie, you absolutely want to have Paramount+ to keep up with the object of your affection. A word of warning though, other streaming platforms may only have select episodes or series to stream.

Star Trek Beyond is the exception but that can be found on Amazon Prime. If you're not prepared to subscribe to Paramount+, the movies are available to rent or buy from a number of different platforms.

‘Star Trek: Insurrection’

‘Star Trek: Insurrection’

After the stellar  Star Trek: First Contact ,  Insurrection is a step backwards — but not a big one. Mainly, this feels like an extended episode of the  Next Generation TV series, with a little more action and a little less pontificating than usual, which is never a bad thing. Jonathan Frakes once again showed his chops as a director, and of course the whole cast is great — particularly Patrick Stewart as Jean-Luc Picard.

The one in which Picard and crew foment a revolt against the legitimate authority of The Federation on behalf of a colony of reactionary, all-white settlers.

The most right wing Star Trek by far. Flagrantly goes against the primary ethical maxim of "the needs of the many outweigh the needs of the few." In this case, the "good guys" who Picard helps are a Space Rhodesia of only 600 people hoarding the secret to immortality for themselves and the "bad guys" are a group of people who rebelled against the trad-morality and isolationist ignorance of their colony and became decadent through contact with the outside world. They are coded as such because they're addicted to plastic surgery and a need…

Something I've found chilling about watching all of the Star Trek movies is how closely my own opinions on them seem to align with the consensus takes. A death blow for the credibility of an enfant terrible of the Star Trek movies letterboxd review world such as myself. Thank god in all of Her(!) grace that we finally made it to Insurrection, a movie I think is probably about as good as First Contact, shattering the stale and oppressive opinions of the letterboxd tastemaker machine who suffocate us all.

I think I said earlier that this movie should've been a Deep Space Nine movie. I stand by that. It should've been. I'm told that many nerds agree with me on…

The question for the production team of Star Trek: Insurrection was always going to be - now we've done the Borg, where the hell do we go next? With Jonathan Frakes back in the chair after his impressive work on First Contact, the answer came in the form of the late Michael Piller, who spearheaded much of The Next Generation TV show at its peak, and takes over on writing duties for a film he seeks to take back to the roots of not so much Trek itself, but certainly the more thoughtful and allegorical TNG. Said allegory here, of course, is imperialism as Insurrection concerns a so-called 'battle for Paradise' and the forced relocation of a small group of…

Picard: "How are you doing this?" Anij: "No more questions."

No more questions is really the right approach to take to this movie. It works well enough if you just let it progress like it wants to, but the more you think about everything the less sense it makes. For a quick simple example, why do they hide the invisible holodeck ship on the Ba'ku planet so close to the Ba'ku civilization? It's invisible, so you might be thinking they should be able to hide it wherever they want, but then Data finds it without any trouble and you begin to wonder why they hid it so close by if they're going to teleport the people onto it anyway.

100-word review: When Federation Admiral Dougherty supports the Son'a in their plan to forcefully relocate an alien commune so as to claim the regenerative properties of their paradise-like planet for themselves, the Enterprise crew comes to the village's rescue. Despite loads of random embarrassments (the "firm boobs" convo isn't even the worst), and plot-holes (but that goes for almost all Star Trek films, and at least this one has a good twist), Insurrection poses an interesting ethical dilemma, reminiscent of the series' recurring argument about exceptions to the 'the needs of the many outweigh the needs of the few' dogma.

Part of my September 2021 Live Long and Prosper challenge; 9th out of 13 films.

Why do people declare "the needs of the many outweigh the needs of the few" (Spock, ST II) to be a central Star Trek maxim when the very next movie Kirk lets us all know what a crock of shit it was with "Because the needs of the one... outweigh the needs of the many." Apparently Spock isn't the only one with amnesia. Insurrection lays it down for us quite clearly - if another nation (sorry, planet) has an asset you want, you can't just kill them all and take it from them. This isn't morally complicated. Nearly as action packed as "First Contact", but with a lot more warmth and humor. Frakes should've directed all the ST:TNG movies. I…

Every bit the glorious transfer that First Contact was, but sadly featuring less standout atmospheric moments with which to Dolby Vision showboat. Colors during the space sequences were jaw dropping and the makeup work on the ghoulish Son’a was flawless even with the added resolution. The 7.1 sound design was also again killer, with shocking low end to the phaser fire and tons of great overhead effects when they’re getting shelled in the cave system.

Also, just to mention, I’m not a big special features guy, but for shits and gigs I clicked on those and wow, there’s a ton of them in there. One of the typical complaints I see about owning digital movies is a lack of special…

Let's not beat around the warp core, I know my thoughts on Star Trek: Insurrection are going to raise some eyebrows. But hear me out before you set your phasers. Yes, this film feels like an episode of the series. Yes, it's straightforward sugary adventure escapism. And yes, it's silly in more ways than one. So what?

Star Trek: The Next Generation had a hard time shedding it's television roots in their first feature film, Generations , but seemed to get the right footing in it's followup First Contact . Unfortunately they couldn't keep that momentum going as Insurrection feels like a TNG tv episode that just won't end and really highlights the weaknesses of this cast of characters for feature films.

The story is flat, the production is flat and the romance is flat. The Enterprise crew comes off as incredibly bland and brings into question if these characters are even right for feature films. The inner turmoil with the character of Picard ( Patrick Stewart ) in the…

Data's Star Trek: Insurrection Story Was Set Up In TNG

  • Data's friendships with young children on TNG drive his desire to be more human, setting up his journey in Star Trek: Insurrection.
  • Sarjenka and Timothy's connections with Data lay the groundwork for his creation of a daughter named Lal in a later TNG episode.
  • Data's capacity for sentiment and emotion is shown through his relationships with children, highlighting his human-like qualities.

Lt. Commander Data (Brent Spiner) befriended a young girl and helped save her people in Star Trek: The Next Generation , setting up his similar Star Trek: Insurrection story. Data spent much of his time on TNG observing and learning from his fellow crew members aboard the USS Enterprise-D. As an android, Data wanted nothing more than to be human, and he learned more about his own inherent humanity as TNG went on. Because of his child-like curiosity and friendly personality, young children often gravitated toward the android, and they, in turn, offered Data insight into what it means to be human.

In Star Trek: The Next Generation season 2, episode 15, "Pen Pals," Data strikes up a correspondence with a young girl named Sarjenka (Nikki Cox) after she sends a plea out into space. Data later learns that Sarjenka's planet, Drema IV, will soon become uninhabitable due to volcanic activity. Although initially reluctant to violate the Prime Directive to save Drema IV, Captain Jean-Luc Picard (Patrick Stewart) eventually relents. In the end, Sarjenka's memories of Data are wiped away, but the android never forgets his connection with this little girl.

Star Trek: The Next Generation Cast & Character Guide

Data's interest in helping children in tng sets up his star trek: insurrection story, data's friendship with sarjenka laid the groundwork for later stories..

Sarjenka is not the only child who finds a friend in Data throughout Star Trek: The Next Generation and the android's connection with children would go on to play a role in Star Trek: Insurrection . Through his friendship with Sarjenka, Data gets one step closer to being human . Data makes another young friend in TNG season 5, episode 11, "Hero Worship," when he rescues a boy named Timothy (Joshua Harris). As the lone survivor of an alien attack on a Federation research vessel, Timothy begins to mimic Data as a way to mask his own grief and pain.

Data admits that he has often wondered what it would be like to be a child.

Data's friendships with Sarjenka and Timothy plant the seeds for his later friendship with a Ba'ku boy named Artim (Michael Welch) in Insurrection . As the Ba'ku people have rejected technology, Artim is initially frightened of Data, but he later grows curious about the android. As Captain Picard and the USS Enterprise-E crew fight to help the Ba'ku people, Artim starts asking Data questions about what it's like being a machine. Data admits that he has often wondered what it would be like to be a child, and Artim reminds Data to "have a little fun every day."

Star Trek: Insurrection was the first film role for child actor Michael Welch, who went on to play Mike Newton in the Twilight films and Mack Thompson in Z Nation .

TNG's "Pen Pals" Also Sets Up Data's Daughter Lal

Data builds an android daughter in tng's "the offspring.".

Data's friendship with Sarjenka in Star Trek: The Next Generation's "Pen Pals" also sets up his eventual decision to create a daughter named Lal (Hallie Todd). In one of Data's best episodes , TNG season 3, episode 16, "The Offspring," Data decides to create another android like himself and raise her as his child. He then creates Lal and teaches her about humans and their behavior. When Starfleet threatens to take Lal away from the Enterprise for further study, Captain Picard fights for Data's right to raise his own daughter. Lal's programming eventually begins to surpass Data's, and she suffers a cascade failure when her new emotions overwhelm her systems.

Data's endearing connections with children on Star Trek: The Next Generation illustrate the android's capacity for sentiment and human-like emotion.

Everyone involved is moved by Data's obvious determination to save Lal, as the android fights just as hard as any parent would to save their child. Although Data is not able to save Lal, he does preserve her memories within his own positronic brain, ensuring that her legacy lives on. Data's friendship with Sarjenka back in TNG's "Pen Pals" gave him a glimpse of what it would be like to care for a child, and he does his best to be a good father to Lal. Data's endearing connections with children on Star Trek: The Next Generation not only set up his Star Trek: Insurrection story, but also illustrate the android's capacity for sentiment and human-like emotion.

Star trek: discovery finally reveals what happened after tng’s “the chase”.

Star Trek: Discovery season 5 provides new details on what happened after Captain Picard saw the Progenitor in Star Trek: TNG's "The Chase."

Warning: SPOILERS for Star Trek: Discovery Season 5, Episode 3 - "Jinaal"

  • Discovery season 5 continues the chase for Progenitors' technology, introduced in TNG's "The Chase".
  • Janaal reveals how Federation handled Progenitor discovery, keeping technology hidden for peace.
  • The Federation's past missteps led to hesitation in trusting Starfleet with powerful technology.

Star Trek: The Next Generation's "The Chase" introduced some big ideas to the Star Trek universe that Star Trek: Discovery season 5 is finally following up on. Discovery season 5 involves a literal chase in Star Trek 's 32nd century, as Captain Michael Burnham (Sonequa Martin-Green) and the crew of the USS Discovery race to find the Progenitors' treasure before the villainous Moll (Eve Harlow) and L'ak (Elias Toufexis). Although unnamed at the time, the Progenitors were first introduced in TNG season 6, episode 20, "The Chase," when Captain Jean-Luc Picard (Patrick Stewart) helped uncover a message left by one of the ancient humanoids.

In Star Trek: Discovery season 5, episode 3 , "Jinaal," written by Kyle Jarrow and Lauren Wilkinson and directed by Andi Armaganian, Captain Burnham and her crew continue to gather the puzzle pieces that will presumably lead them to the Progenitors' technology. This journey takes the USS Discovery to the planet Trill, where Dr. Hugh Culber (Wilson Cruz) acts as a host for the consciousness of an 800-year-old Trill named Jinaal Bix. Jinaal reveals more information about what happened after Picard received the Progenitors' message in the 24th century. While "The Chase" explained why many Star Trek aliens are humanoid, the implications of Picard's discovery were never fully explored.

Star Trek: Discovery’s TNG Connection Explained - "The Chase" & Who Are The Progenitors?

Star trek: discovery finally updates what happened after tng’s “the chase”, the federation didn't ignore captain picard's discovery..

When Captain Picard unlocked the Progenetors' message in Star Trek: The Next Generation's "The Chase," the Cardassians, Klingons, and Romulans also had representatives present. In the message, the ancient humanoid (Salome Jens) revealed that Progenitor "scientists seeded the primordial oceans of many worlds," meaning all humanoid life originated from a single ancestor. The Progenitors hoped this information would bring peace among humanoid species, but the Cardassians and Klingons reacted negatively to the message. Nevertheless, the United Federation of Planets and many other species would undoubtedly be interested in these Progenitors and the technology that allowed them to create all humanoid life.

The Federation President during Star Trek: Deep Space Nine was Jaresh-Inyo (Herschel Sparber), and he may have been who oversaw finding the Progenitors' technology.

Star Trek: Discovery season 5 is finally addressing this mystery, and Janaal reveals more about how the Federation responded to the discovery of the Progenitors. The Federation President secretly assembled a team of six scientists from different Federation and non-Federation worlds, including Janaal and the Romulan Dr. Vellek (Michael Copeman) , to research the Progenitors and the message Picard found. This team eventually found a technology "beyond anything [they had] ever seen," but one of the scientists was horribly killed when he tried to activate it. The scientists then made a pact that they would do everything in their power to keep the Progenitors' technology hidden until some future date when the galaxy was at peace.

Janaal does not reveal the names of the other scientists, and he says that they removed their names from "every database [they] could access." This explains why these characters and their mission have never been mentioned in Star Trek before.

How “The Chase” Tied Into DS9’s Dominion War & Star Trek: Insurrection

Why didn't jinaal give the progenitor technology to the federation.

After Jinaal reveals how he and his fellow scientists hid the Progenitor technology, Captain Burnham asks why they didn't give it to the Federation. Jinaal responds that Star Trek: Deep Space Nine 's Dominion War was raging at the time, so "everyone saw an enemy in everyone else." Despite the trust Michael places in the Federation and Starfleet, these organizations have not always been above reproach. During the Dominion War, there were fears that Changelings could infiltrate the Federation even at the highest levels, but it wasn't just Changelings that posed a threat. In Star Trek: Deep Space Nine season 4, episode 11, "Homefront," and episode 12, "Paradise Lost," for example, Admiral Leyton (Robert Foxworth) staged a coup against Federation President Jaresh-Inyo.

Starfleet could not be trusted with technology as powerful as the Progenitors'.

Leyton's plan to initiate a military takeover of Earth ultimately failed, but it proved that Starfleet could not be trusted with technology as powerful as the Progenitors'. In Star Trek: Insurrection , another Starfleet flag officer, Admiral Dougherty (Anthony Zerbe), attempted to forcibly move the peaceful Ba'ku people in order to access the healing properties of the area of space known as the Briar Patch. The Federation of the 32nd century in Star Trek: Discovery seems better prepared to safeguard the Progenitors' technology, but the high-stakes treasure hunt still has everyone on edge.
