About Huaraz, Peru

Located about 420 km north of  Lima , Huaraz is the capital of the Ancash Region. The city sits around 3,050 m (10,013 ft) above sea level in the middle of the Callejon de Huaylas valley.

The valley stretches for about 150km and it divides two mountain ranges, the Cordillera Blanca (‘White Mountains’) to the east, and the Cordillera Negra (‘Black Mountains’) to the west.

The Cordillera Blanca has several peaks over 6,000 m (19,690 ft) high and over 700 glaciers. It is also home to Peru’s highest peak called Huascaran Sur (6,768 m / 22,205 ft). The Cordillera Blanca is actually the world’s highest tropical mountain range which means that Huascaran Sur is the world’s highest tropical mountain.

The mountain range sits almost entirely within the Huascaran National Park which has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1985.

Since Huaraz is one of the biggest towns in the Peruvian Andes, it’s no wonder that it’s become a popular tourist destination over the years. Today, Huaraz is considered the gateway to the Huascaran National Park and often referred to as the ‘hiking capital of Peru’ due to the great variety of outdoor activities the area offers its visitors.

Best Things to Do in Huaraz, Peru

1. go on a day hike from huaraz.

The main reason many visitors even put Huaraz onto their Peru itinerary is to visit Laguna 69. Over the years it’s definitely become one of the top attractions in Huaraz.

Laguna 69 sits at about 4,600 m (15,091 ft) above sea level. It is one of the hundreds of lakes that make up part of the Huascaran National Park.

Unfortunately, Laguna 69’s popularity often makes people overlook the fact that this hike isn’t an easy stroll in the Andes. Whilst it might not be as physically challenging as other hikes in Peru , such as the Salkantay Trek or Ausangate Trek , it also won’t be as easy as some of the other day trips from Huaraz we’ve listed below. It’s a serious hike and it’s important to arrive prepared.

Laguna 69 Hike General Information:

  • Distance: 14 km roundtrip.
  • Altitude: Trailhead is 3,800 m (12,467 ft) / Maximum altitude is 4,600 m (15,091 ft).
  • Elevation Gain: about 800 m (2,625 ft).
  • Entry Fee: S/. 30 ($8.5 USD), which is the cost of a day pass to Huascaran National Park.
  • Tour or Independent Visit?: We recommend booking a tour. Tours costs around S/.60 ($17 USD) per person.

Laguna Paron

Another popular day-trip from Huaraz is Laguna Paron. The lake sits about 4,200 m (13,780 ft) above sea level. It is the largest laguna in the Cordillera Blanca and is surrounded by several snow-capped mountain peaks such as the 5,885 m (19,308 ft) tall Pirámide. The lake formed as a natural moraine reservoir and thanks to the high concentrations of dissolved lime it has a beautiful turquoise colour.

There are actually two main tour options for visiting Laguna Paron:

  • 5AM start that includes a few hours of hiking either to Huandoy Viewpoint or to Artesonraju Mountain.
  • 8AM start that includes a short hike to the Laguna Paron viewpoint. This is the most popular tour.

Laguna Paron Hike General Information:

  • Distance: 30-40 mins walk to Laguna Paron Viewpoint. 5 km long loop to Huandoy Viewpoint. 11.5 km long hike to Artesoncocha Viewpoint.
  • Altitude: 4,200 m (13,780 ft) at Laguna Paron Viewpoint. 4,560 m (14,960 ft) at Huandoy viewpoint. 4,350 m (14,270 ft) at Artesoncocha Viewpoint.
  • Elevation Gain: 100 m to Laguna Paron viewpoint. About 300 m to Huandoy Viewpoint and only about 150 m to Artesoncocha Viewpoint.
  • Entry Fee: S/. 5 ($1.50 USD) per person.
  • Tour or Independent Visit?: We recommend booking a tour. Tours costs around S/.60 ($17 USD) per person for the later starting tour.

Click here to read our detailed guide to visiting Laguna Paron.

Laguna Churup

Another fantastic day trip from Huaraz is to Laguna Churup.

The lake sits at 4,450 m (14,600 ft) in front of the impressive Nevado Churup which has a height of 5,495 m (18,028 ft). There’s a viewpoint (mirador) you can climb up to at 4,500 m (14,750 ft).

If you want, you can even hike further up to a smaller lake called Laguna Churupita (4,584 m / 15,000 ft).

The Laguna Churup hike starts in the small town of Pitec (3,850 m / 12,631 ft). Due to its close proximity to Huaraz, you can get to the lake by colectivos. Transport Turistico Andes Peru run a colectivo service from 7AM. There are also hourly colectivos from Pitec back to Huaraz.

Laguna Churup Hike General Information:

  • Distance: 7 km roundtrip.
  • Altitude: Maximum altitude is 4,450 m (14,600 ft) at the lake, 4,500 meters (14,750 ft) at the viewpoint and 4,584 m (15,000 ft) at Laguna Churupita.
  • Elevation Gain: about 660 m (2,165 ft).
  • Entry Fee: S/. 30 ($8.5 USD) which is the cost of a day pass to Huascaran National Park.
  • Tour or Independent Visit?: We recommend visiting on your own, using colectivos to get to the trailhead.

johnny tours huaraz

Pastoruri Glacier

A visit to Pastoruri Glacier is another great thing to do in Huaraz.

The glacier sits in the southern part of the Cordillera Blanca mountain range at over 5,250 m (17,200 feet). It is a cirque glacier, which means that it has formed in a bowl-shaped or amphitheater-like depression in the side of the mountain. The glacier is one of only a few remaining in the tropical areas of South America.

Unfortunately it is retreating quickly and has lost around one-third of its size in the past 30 years. This is because the glacier is no longer building up ice during the winter, so it’s constantly losing its volume.

Due to the high altitude, we recommend going on this day trip after you’ve completed a few acclimatisation hikes in Huaraz.

Pastoruri Glacier Hike General Information:

  • Distance: 3.5 km roundtrip.
  • Altitude: Trailhead is 4,800 m (15,750 ft) / Maximum altitude is 5,050 m (16,570 ft).
  • Elevation Gain: about 200 m (650 ft).

Laguna Wilcacocha

Laguna Wilcacocha is located just outside of Huaraz in the Cordillera Negra, a mountain range that faces the jaw-dropping Cordillera Blanca. It is a small lake located at 3,725 m (12,220 ft) above sea level.

The walk up to it is considered an easy acclimatisation hike for those wishing to complete more challenging trails within the Cordillera Blanca range.

Whilst Laguna Wilcacocha isn’t the most beautiful lake around Huaraz, the views you get of the Cordillera Blanca are jaw-dropping and a hundred percent worth hiking up for.

Laguna Wilcacocha Hike General Information:

  • Altitude: Trailhead is 3,150 m (10,335 ft)  / Maximum altitude is 3,725 m (12,220 ft) at the Laguna Wilcacocha viewpoint.
  • Elevation Gain: about 575 m (1,886 ft).
  • Entry Fee: Free.
  • Tour or Independent Visit?: We recommend visiting on your own using colectivos.

Click here to read our detailed guide to hiking Laguna Wilcacocha.

Laguna Rajucolta

Located at the base of Huantsan Mountain near Macashca is Laguna Rajucolta.

Huantsan mountain has four peaks, one of which reaches 6,369 m (20,896 ft) making it the thrid highest peak in the national park. The picturesque Laguna Rajucolta sits at 4,271 m (14,012 ft) above sea level right in front of it.

The trail to the lake is relatively flat with very minimal elevation gain. Therefore, it is considered a great acclimatisation hike.

Laguna Rajucolta Hike General Information:

  • Distance: 14.5 km roundtrip.
  • Altitude: Maximum altitude is 4,271 m (14,012 ft).
  • Elevation Gain: about 400 m (1,313 ft).
  • Tour or Independent Visit?: We recommend booking a tour. Tours costs a minimum of S/.60 ($17 USD) per person or more depending on the size of the group.

2. Go On a Multi-Day Trek in the Huascaran National Park

Huaraz isn’t just for day-hikers. After all, it’s called the hiking capital of Peru for a reason. Many visitors only stay in Huaraz for a short time to go on one or more of the above day trips and hikes before attempting one of the following long distance treks.

There are a few popular ones you can consider signing up for during your stay. Obviously these will require you to spend more time in the Huaraz region, and they are definitely more costly than the day-trips.

Santa Cruz Trek

One of the most popular multi-day treks in Huaraz is the Santa Cruz Trek. It’s named after the 6,259 m (20,535 ft) tall Santa Cruz mountain.

During the 4-day long trek, you’ll be winding your way through the scenic valleys of the Cordillera Blanca mountain range. You’ll spend the days walking past turquoise and deep blue coloured lakes with snow-capped mountains standing tall all around them. Then you’ll spend each night under the star-lit sky before returning to Huaraz.

The great thing about this trek is that you can do it independently. Though we only recommend this if you’ve trekked on your own before and have all the necessary camping gear. Otherwise, we suggest booking this trek with an experienced guide.

There are plenty of trekking companies to pick from in Huaraz, but you can always have a look online too.

Santa Cruz Trek General Information:

  • Distance: 50 km / 31 mi
  • Length: 4 days / 3 nights
  • Level of Difficulty: Moderate to difficult.
  • Altitude: Average of 4,000 m (13,123 ft) with maximum altitude of 4,750m (15,584 ft) at the Punta Union Pass.
  • Elevation Gain and Loss:  +1,150 m (3,773 ft) /-1,850 m (6,069 ft)
  • Entry Fee: S/. 60 ($17 USD) which is the cost of a short multi-day pass to Huascaran National Park.
  • Tour or Independent Visit?: You can do it independently if you have experience and your own gear. Otherwise, we recommend booking a tour. Tours cost around $300-350 USD per person.

johnny tours huaraz

Huayhuash Trek

Although considered one of the top hiking circuits in the world, the Huayhuash Trek is one that not many people know about.

This particular trek takes you through the Cordillera Huayhuash mountain range, from which the circuit gets its name. This is where Yerupajá, the second highest mountain in the tropics at 6,617 m (21,709 ft) high, is located.

It’s definitely not a trek for the faint hearted since it takes 12 days to complete the classic route. Nowadays you can book a shorter version of the trek too but it’s still going to be a challenging route. You’ll be crossing passes between 4,600 m (15,092 ft) and 5,000 m (16,404 ft) regularly.

Since it’s a much longer trek, the cost will be much higher too. We noticed that some companies, such as Akilpo, offer a discount depending on the size of the group.

Huayhuash Trek General Information:

  • Distance: 120 km / 75 mi
  • Length: The classic trek is 12 days / 11 nights or a shorter trek can be between 7-10 days.
  • Level of Difficulty: Hard, challenging trek.
  • Altitude: Maximum altitude is 5,565 m (18,257 ft).
  • Entry Fee: You’ll have to pay around S/.220 (S/. 15-20 per night) in trekking permits to various communities.
  • Guided or Independent Trek?: We recommend joining a guided trek.

3. Climb One of the Peaks in the Cordillera Blanca

The list of outdoor activities in Huaraz is pretty much endless. If you’re an experienced hiker or mountaineer, then you can sign up for one of the many climbs in Huaraz too. There are some really cool peaks you can summit, so make sure to have a good look around.

During our research we even found companies that offer some mountaineering courses. Unfortunately, we didn’t have time to sign up for one, but we would love to in the future.

Below are some popular mountains you can summit in Huaraz:

  • Mateo (5,150 m / 16,896 ft) – 1-day climb;
  • Vallunaraju (5,686 m / 18,655 ft) – 2-day climb;
  • Yanapaccha (5,460 m / 17,913 ft) – 2-day climb;
  • Pisco (5,752 m / 18,871 ft) – 3-day climb.

There are many longer expeditions you can join to summit other peaks too. Make sure to do some research and go with a reputable company.

How to Get to Huaraz

The best way to reach Huraz is by public bus.

Bus companies such as  Cruz del Sur or Civa provide services between Lima and Huaraz. The tickets cost anywhere between $ 20-35 USD depending on the time and bus company you pick.

Note . It takes at least 8 hours (but normally around 9 to 10 hours) to reach Huaraz from Lima. Therefore, we recommend picking an overnight bus. You can  buy your ticket online  or at the bus station. Note that your bus might leave from different terminals depending on the bus company.

johnny tours huaraz

How to Get Around Huaraz

Tours are probably the most affordable and convenient way to get around the Huascaran National Park. Normally, day-tours in Huaraz operate more as a transport service. You’ll get a guide allocated to the group for the day, but he/she won’t really be hiking with the group. Instead, you’ll be given a time that you should get back to the bus or minivan by and left to your own devices.

We noticed that the guides on day-tours mainly spoke Spanish, with minimal English. So, it’s always good to learn a few words, especially regarding the time. Even if you don’t, there will be someone who will be able to translate the important parts for you.

The cost of tours can vary slightly depending on who you book with. We normally paid around S/.60 ($17 USD) per person for day trips. These included destinations such as Laguna 69 , Laguna Paron , and Pastoruri Glacier.

During our time in Huaraz we noticed that  it didn’t really matter which tour company we booked our day-trip with . Most companies actually work together and fit people who’ve booked through different companies into as few a vans as possible to make it more cost efficient.

Multi-day treks and climbs can cost a bit more. For example, the 4-day/3-night Santa Cruz Trek can cost anywhere between $300-$350 USD. The 11 day long Huayhuash Classic Trek can cost over $800 USD per person.

The multi-day hikes are more similar to the ones in Cusco, such as the Inca Trail and Salkantay Trek , where you have a guide who hikes with the group.

You can have a look what tours are available online, but we recommend having a look around in Huaraz too.

johnny tours huaraz

Colcetivos and Taxis

Another way to get around Huaraz is by colectivos or private taxis.

Most of the hikes and treks we listed above can also be completed independently. You’ll just need a bit of Spanish knowledge and a thirst for adventure. If you’re going on a multi-day trek, having your own camping gear is important too.

Colectivos are generally much cheaper than tours or taxis. You can normally get to certain trailheads quite easily with them. However, we noticed that the return journey to Huaraz always seemed to be the more complicated one. You’ll be pretty remote out at the trailheads and these colectivos won’t always come regularly (if at all).

Hiring a private taxi might be a good option if you want to skip tours. However, bear in mind that they can be quite costly, unless you share the price with a few others. Again, you would probably need to hire a driver for the whole day because you won’t be able to flag one down in the middle of nowhere.

johnny tours huaraz

Huascaran National Park Entry Fees

Since many popular places lie within the Huascaran National Park, you’ll have to purchase a national park pass upon entering. There are a few different options, depending on how many places you wish to visit whilst in the city.

  • 1 day pass: S/. 30.00 ($8.50USD)
  • 2 to 3 day pass: S/. 60.00 ($17 USD)
  • 4 to 30 day pass: S/. 150.00 ($40 USD)

If you’re staying in Huaraz a bit longer and are planning to do multiple day trips, then we recommend buying the shorter multiday pass. If you’re doing any of the multi-day treks then we suggest buying the one that can last up to a month.

It’s worth thinking about how many attractions you want to visit within the park, so you can purchase the most suitable version of the pass.

You can buy your pass on your first day trip and just bring it along with you when you’re on a different tour.

Note. Laguna Paron isn’t included in the national park pass, which means you’ll have to pay a S/. 5 entry fee even if you already have a multi-day pass.

johnny tours huaraz

Best Time to Visit Huaraz

You can technically visit Huaraz all year round. However, there are better and worse times of the year if you want to complete some popular hikes.

The  wet season  is normally  between December and March/April.  Whilst visiting during these months doesn’t necessarily mean that you’ll be hiking in the pouring rain, the chances are much higher. Some hikes can become a bit more dangerous due to the bad weather conditions and are more likely to get cancelled. Even if they do go ahead, you really want to enjoy the jaw dropping scenery and not be wishing the hike was over because you’re soaking wet and feeling miserable.

The  dry season is from about April to November.  This time frame definitely gives you a high chance of some sunny and enjoyable hikes. If you come just before the dry season, around April, then you’ll probably have pleasant and rain free day-trips. It’s also less busy with tourists, so a good time to come to avoid the crowds. When we visited in early May we normally had nice, sunny mornings most days with the clouds gathering for the usual afternoon shower and thunderstorm around 3-4pm.

June to September are the most popular tourist months, so be prepared for a lot more people to be on certain hiking trails with you.

How to Avoid Altitude Sickness in Huaraz

Huaraz sits around 3,050 m (10,013 ft) above sea level which means that you can get altitude sickness if you arrive to the city from sea level.

It is important to know that  anyone can develop altitude sickness  and its symptoms can be more or less severe depending on the person. Symptoms of altitude sickness include dehydration, dizziness, headaches, shortness of breath, heavy breathing, loss of appetite, nausea and vomiting.

If you haven’t visited other high altitude places in Peru, such as Cusco , before arriving to Huaraz, we recommend taking it easy on your first day and not booking any high altitude hikes like Laguna 69 straight away.

Starting with an easier day trip, such as Laguna Wilcacocha (3,725 m / 12,221 ft) or Laguna Paron (4,155 m / 13,631 ft), is probably much better since these trails aren’t as long or physically demanding. This way you can acclimatise properly and avoid altitude sickness.

It’s also good to avoid drinking too much alcohol before your day trips and not eating too many heavy foods either. Staying hydrated during the hikes is very important to avoid dehydration and headaches. You can drink Coca tea like the locals do at high altitudes in Peru. In addition, you can also buy some altitude sickness tablets before you hike anywhere in Peru.

Of course, if you’ve done some high altitude hikes in Peru already, such as the Salkantay Trek , the Ausangate Trek to Rainbow Mountain or if you went on a 2 or 3-day Colca Canyon Trek , then you’ll most likely be fine going on hikes like Laguna 69 right away.

johnny tours huaraz

Do you Need Special Travel Insurance to Visit Huaraz

We cannot emphasize enough how important it is to have travel insurance before any trip you make abroad. Now, most travel insurance won’t automatically include cover for all the activities you’re planning on doing during your travels.

For example, if you’re visiting Peru, and planning on hiking in high altitudes, then you should have cover for high altitude trekking in your insurance policy. Make sure to shop around to find the most suitable one. You just never know what could happen and it’s better to be safe than sorry.

Where to Stay in Huaraz

If you’re only in Huaraz for a short amount of time, then we recommend staying in the vicinity of the city centre. That way, you can easily find tour operators close by. Plus, being in the centre means being close to restaurants, markets and even the bus terminal.

There are plenty of hostels or hotels you can pick from depending on your budget and needs.

If you’re staying in Huaraz for longer you can find some nice apartments a little outside of the centre.

johnny tours huaraz

How Long Do You Need to Stay in Huaraz

The answer to this question is a bit tricky. First of all, it depends on how you arrived to the city. If you come on an overnight bus, then you’ll arrive early to mid morning. If you’ve not acclimatised yet, then we recommend not doing much on your first day.

Then it depends on whether you want to sign up for any of the multi-day treks or not. The Santa Cruz Trek is 4 days long, so just to complete that you’ll need to plan at least 5 days in Huaraz, leaving on the 6th.

If you only want to go on a few day-trips, then depending on how many you want to do we recommend adding an extra day for acclimatisation and of course leaving either the day after your last trip or with an overnight bus on the same day.

Now if you’re tight on time, then you can make your stay slightly shorter by completing the Laguna Wilcacocha hike on your first day, since it’s a good acclimatisation hike that you can do without a tour. Generally speaking, most day tours should get you back to Huaraz between 6-7PM, so you could leave on an overnight bus to your next destination straight after.

It’s up to you at the end of the day, but we don’t recommend coming all the way to Huaraz just to do one day trip like Laguna 69. It’s a long way and involves two overnight bus journeys, so bear that in mind when planning your Peru itinerary.

Final Thoughts on Visiting Huaraz in Peru

Although the weather stopped us from going on a few more adventures in Huaraz, we absolutely loved our time in this area. Visiting a place that’s surrounded by mountain peaks way over 5,000 m was a dream for us. We can totally appreciate why people refer to Huaraz as Peru’s hiking capital.

We didn’t think that our time in the Sacred Valley and seeing Machu Picchu could be topped by anything, but Huaraz definitely surprised us. Whilst the city can be pretty touristy, it didn’t feel anywhere near as commercialised as Cusco, which we really loved.

Huaraz and the Huascaran National Park are definitely places we would return to in the future to complete some of the multi-day treks and climbs.

Have you ever been to Huaraz in Peru? If so, which activities did you do whilst there and what was your favourite one? If not, would you add Huaraz to your Peru itinerary ? Let us know in the comments below.

I spent a lot of time in Peru, but didn’t make it to Huaraz. I loved the country and Huaraz is at the top of my list for when I return!

Peru is amazing isn’t it? Hope you can get to visit Huaraz on a future trip!

Your pictures are amazing! Peru is my number one country on my bucket list so I’m really enjoying all these posts!

Thank you so much Karla, it means a lot!

That water looks absolutely unreal. I love hiking/the outdoors so this is definitely going on my travel bucket list!!

Thanks Farrah, hope you can visit Huaraz in the future.

OMG Kitty this all looks amaaaaazing! Especially the Huayhuash Trek – it sounds like a challenge, but an incredible, doable one.

The only part that makes me wonder (as I’ve only been above 4000m once) is how much the altitude will affect my ability to hike. The routes you describe sound a lot less than we normally do in mid summer (as here in Canada it’s normal to hike 25-30km with 1000-1500m elevation gain…) it’s just I have no idea how much harder it’ll be with the high elevation. I’m guessing quite a lot!?

Thank you so much Josy. The elevation is definitely no joke in Peru. We highly recommend acclimatising first and go on a few shorter hikes to get used to it before committing to a longer distance. It’s always good to have some medications on you and drink enough water on your hike to avoid altitude sickness. Once you’re used to the altitude it’ll be easier to hike, but uphills can still feel a little more challenging.

17 must-see tourist places in Huaraz that you should know

johnny tours huaraz

Huaraz is an outdoor enthusiast's paradise in Peru because it offers a multitude of hiking possibilities.

It is still little known by international travelers and the reason is very simple: it is off the beaten track for tourists who only have 2 weeks to visit Peru.

However, if you are a lover of trekking and nature, you cannot miss this little jewel of the Andes of northern Peru!

The perfect city as a starting point to discover all the wonders that the Callejón de Huaylas offers. Next, the best tourist places in Huaraz that you should know.

The City of Huaraz

Located at an altitude of 3080m in the Andes, Huaraz is the capital of the region of the same name, in the province of Ancash.

In fact, there is not much to do in the city and its main interest is to be the starting point for all excursions.

But since you will have to go through there, it is better to take advantage of it!

What to do in the city of Huaraz?

The Plaza de Armas: it is the central square of Huaraz, where the cathedral, the San Sebastián Tabernacle, the tourist office and the archeology museum are located.

The Ancash Archaeological Museum: presents the historical and cultural development of the Ancash region, from 10,500 B.C. until the sixteenth century. There are Chavin, Huaraz, Mochica, Recuay, and Inca artifacts. Its garden is a must-see with its 140 monoliths. From Tuesday to Sunday, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Entry 5 soles.

The Sanctuary of the Lord of Soledad is a beautiful church located in the Plaza de la Soledad

Visit the Central Market where you can see local life, products of all kinds, etc.

El Mirador Rataquenua: it is a viewpoint with a great view over Huaraz and the surrounding mountains. You can walk 1 hour from the center, or take a taxi (20 soles). Further on, there is also the Pukaventana viewpoint.

Try the Sierra Andina beer that is originally from Huaraz. It was one of the first craft beers in Peru! Now it is very famous and available all over the country, but the best place to discover it is in the Trivio bar.

At about 3100m above sea level, between the magnificent mountains of the Cordillera Blanca, and the Mosna and Huachesca rivers, lies Chavín de Huantar, an archaeological complex declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO.

It is one of the biggest tourist attractions in Huaraz and one of the essential places to see in Peru.

It was the administrative and religious center of the Chavín culture (1500-400 BC) and was the most important pilgrimage site in the Andean world. So important that even pilgrims from the Amazon came!

There are several buildings with a rather complex network of galleries and corridors. Chavín de Huantar is known for having the oldest carved stone buildings in Peru.

The most important structures are El Castillo (also called the New Temple or Mayor Temple) and the Old Temple.

There are also the North Structure, the Circular Plaza, the Tello Pyramid, the North Platform, the South Platform and the Quadrangular Plaza.

Of course you cannot miss the Chavín National Museum, which presents the evolution of the Chavín culture and where you can see the Tello obelisk, 19 pututus (wind instruments), 282 ceramic pieces and other artifacts.

How to visit Chavin de Huantar?

You can book a tour from Huaraz to Chavín de Huantar that includes the guided visit, the Chavín de Huantar museum and the pick-up at your hotel.

Querococha Lagoon

57 km from the capital, in the Callejón de Huaylas, is the great Querococha lagoon (3980 m).

It is the most touristic lagoon in the area due to its proximity to Huaraz and Chavín de Huantar, but it is really worth visiting because it offers magnificent views of the high mountains and glaciers that surround it.

How to visit the Querococha Lagoon?

Tours to the Querococha lagoon (full day) usually include a visit to Chavín de Huantar and pass through the small towns of Recuay, Ticapampa and Catac.

Honcopampa is one of the most important archaeological sites in the Callejón de Huaylas.

Its origin dates back to the VII- IX centuries and it was occupied by the Recuay and Wari peoples.

Today you can still see a group of square houses with a central patio and chullpas (mausoleums).

How to visit Honcopampa?

If you take a tour to Honcopampa from Huaraz, you will also be able to visit some artisan towns (Tarica, Pariahuanca, San Miguel de Aco, etc.), the Yuracyacu waterfalls and the Chancos thermal baths.

Acclimatization Treks

To get used to the altitude, it is very important that you take a day of acclimatization in Huaraz before making any physical effort, unless you come directly from Cusco or another high-altitude destination.

For your second day, it is best to do a short hike (1/2 day or 1 day). These walks have different levels of difficulty, some are easier than others.

The most famous in Huaraz are Laguna 69, Laguna Churup and Laguna Parón, but there are also other places to visit in Huaraz.

Here I present several acclimatization hikes, known and less known:

Laguna 69 located in the Huascarán National Park is an essential place to see in Huaraz.

You can access it by walking from Cebollapampa. The hike is not very long but it is quite physically demanding because you go from 3890m to 4600m, so take your time!

The ascent lasts about 3 hours and allows you to enjoy beautiful landscapes between waterfalls and mountains.

The first half of the hike is fairly easy, but the climb is steeper towards the end. Do not hesitate to take breaks along the way to avoid altitude sickness.

When you reach the top, you will only have 15 minutes (without climbing) to reach Laguna 69, at the foot of the Chacraraju mountain.

If you want you can get into the water but believe me it is very cold!

How to get to Laguna 69?

the easiest option is to go with a cheap excursion from Huaraz. Includes pick up at your hotel, breakfast, snacks, entrance to the Huascarán National Park, a stop at the Llanganuco lagoons and free time at Lagoon 69.

The Quebrada de Llanganuco is one of the best places to visit in Huaraz.

It is also located in the Huascarán National Park, and is formed by the Chinancocha and Orconcocha lagoons, fed by the Huascarán, Yanapacca, Pisco and Huandoy snow-capped mountains.

From the entrance of the park, following a dirt road for about 30 minutes, you will first arrive at the Chinancocha Lagoon. It is the largest and most touristy of the two lagoons, you can even take a boat or horseback ride.

The Orconcocha Lagoon is a few minutes from the first lagoon.

I recommend that you follow the “sendero de María Josefa” path, a nice 1h30 walk that allows you to explore the surroundings and see 80% of the region's plants (including many orchids!). It is well indicated, easy and really charming.

How to get to the Llanganuco lagoons?

With a tour it is really more comfortable! You have two tour options, you can take the tour that includes Llanganuco and Laguna 69, or the tour only to the Llanganuco lagoons, which includes pick-up at your hotel, entrance fee and guide.

Churup Lagoon

From the town of Pitec, it takes about 3 hours of walking, but in reality the challenge comes at the end of the trail with about 9 meters of rocks that you have to climb with a rope (already fixed on the wall).

At this height (4450m), one quickly runs out of breath, but behind this wall is one of the most beautiful lakes in the Cordillera Blanca with crystal clear water.

The acclimatization hike to Laguna Churup is more demanding than the previous ones (due to the altitude) and I recommend that you avoid starting with it.

How to get to the Churup Lagoon?

First you have to get to the town of Pitec by bus (40min), and then there is only one round trip.

Paron Lagoon

At 4300m high, in the Huascarán National Park, is one of the most beautiful places to see in Huaraz: Laguna Parón.

It is much less known and less touristy than Laguna 69, but it is just as beautiful (and in my opinion, even more so!).

You can walk around the lake and go to the foot of the Artesonraju glacier.

I recommend you go up to the viewpoint (45min-1h one way) to enjoy the spectacular view and take photos, you can also rent a kayak or a boat.

You reach the lake with a walk of 2h30 to 3h, on an unpaved road, but accessible to cars.

You can sleep near the lake, camping or in the shelter with kitchen (20 soles).

How to get to Laguna Parón?

An organized tour includes pick-up from your hotel, breakfast in Carhuaz, a panoramic stop in front of the Cordillera Blanca, a visit to Marcara and Caraz, known for its sweets, as well as the Parón Lagoon.

Wilcacocha Lagoon

The Wilcacocha Lagoon is located at an altitude of 3,700 m in the Cordillera Negra. It is a good acclimatization hike option in Huaraz and can be done very well without a guide.

The lagoon is not very big, but the road is very nice with small rural roads, villages and fields. After about 2h30 of walking at a leisurely pace, you arrive at the lake with incredible views over the mountains of the Cordillera Blanca.

How to get to Wilcacocha?

from Huaraz it is 15 minutes by bus (10 or E) to Chiwipampa, from the corner of Avenida Raymondi and Jirón Hualcán. 1-2 soles one way per person. Be careful with your return time because the last buses pass around 4:30 pm.

Radian Lagoon and Mullaca Lagoon

This is a hike off the beaten track in Huaraz that few tourists know about.

It is important to take into account that it is a fairly demanding walk of 25 km with 1200 m. unevenness, which will take you up to 4610 m.

Walking near the San Cristóbal hill for about 2 hours, you first arrive at the Radian Lagoon (3950m altitude), a very quiet place with a magnificent view over the valley.

From the north side of the Radian Lagoon, take the path that follows the pre-Inca channel (1h). In the second part, the path becomes more interesting, following the stream fed by the waters of the Mullaca Lagoon (1h).

So you have to calculate a 4-4h30 walk from the town of Recrish to Mullaca, one of the most beautiful lagoons in the region, in front of the snowy Vallunaraju.

How to get to the Radian and Mullaca lagoons?

You have to go to the town of Recrish (30 minutes from Huaraz), near the archaeological site of Willcahuain. You can take your bus here, 1.8 soles one way. It is a 2h walk to the Radian Lagoon and 2h30 to Mullaca.

Aguak Lagoon

It is a nice little touristy hike in Huaraz.

The walk begins 45 minutes from Huaraz, in the small town of Paria where the pre-Inca ruins of Willcahuain (or Huillcahuayín) are located.

Willcahuain was occupied by various peoples for very long periods (from before Christ to the 9th century!), but it is known mainly for being an administrative center of the Huari people.

Not much remains today, but you can see the "Temple" which is a mausoleum.

From there, it takes about 3 hours of walking along a path surrounded by eucalyptus trees, conifers and shrubs to reach Lake Aguak at 4950m above sea level.

From the lagoon you get a magnificent view of Huaraz and the snow-capped peaks of the Cordillera Blanca.

How to get to the Aguak Lagoon?

The excursion takes place in one day from Huaraz, and usually includes a box lunch and the entrance to the Huascarán National Park.

Pastoruri Glacier

The Pastoruri is a glacier located in the Huascarán National Park, which rises to 5200 m above sea level.

It is infamous for having lost some of its ice cover in recent years due to climate change.

It takes about 3 hours of travel to get there from Huaraz, but the landscapes are magnificent!

On the way you can admire the imposing mountains and the Puyas Raimondi, some typical plants of the puna (Altiplano region between 3,200 and 4,800 meters of altitude).

The walk to Pastoruri only lasts 45 min-1 hour with a slight slope, but the path is not difficult. It is especially the height that can weigh.

How to get to Pastoruri?

I recommend you hire an excursion to Pastoruri that includes the pick-up at your hotel in Huaraz, the entrance fees and the guide. You can also choose the private tour option.

Multi-Day Hikes

I repeat: it is very important to acclimatize to the altitude.

The ideal is to take a quiet day in Huaraz and then do 2 days of short walks, before starting these multi-day hikes.

Mountain sickness can cause severe nausea and headache, or worse in some cases.

If you feel very bad at any point of the walk, you must go back down, it is the only way to recover.

Santa Cruz (4 days)

The Santa Cruz trek is one of the best things to do in Huaraz and yet there are not many hikers on the trail. This is the advantage of being in a non-touristy destination in Peru!

It is a trip of 4 days and 3 nights through the Cordillera Blanca that allows you to admire a series of snow-capped mountains, small rivers and beautiful lakes.

People usually go with a guide, but you can also do it on your own because the path is well indicated.

The disadvantage is that you have to bring everything (material, food for 4 days, etc.), but if you want you can rent a mule, it's very practical!

How to get there on your own?

Take a bus to Caraz, then another bus to Cashapampa which is the starting point of the walk to Santa Cruz.

Huayhuash (8 to 12 days)

The Huayhuash trek is one of the most beautiful in the world, but also one of the most difficult in the region because it requires traveling about 130 km between 4,000 and 5,490 m altitude.

The landscape is impressive, with imposing mountains that exceed 6000 m.

Along the way, we can observe the famous Andean condor, vicuñas and vizcachas. Halfway along the way you can also enjoy the thermal waters that offer a well-deserved dose of relaxation to the body.

There are many variants of the Huayhuash trek that are shorter than the full version. There is even a 4-day “mini” Huayhuash.

It can be done with an agency or alone, although the safest way is to do it with a guide.

Do the Huayhuash trek on your own?

I recommend that you do it only if you have a good experience in high altitude and the adapted equipment. It is important to understand that this trip involves risks along the way and if something happens, you will be isolated.

How to get to the starting point?

From Huaraz, you can take a taxi to Cuartelwain. Another option is to take the bus to Llamac and then walk to Cuartelwain.

Quilacayhuanca – Cojup (3 days)

2 hours from Huaraz, in the Huascarán National Park, is Quilcayhuanca (3850m), the starting point of the trek.

The first day, the trek lasts 5 hours and ends at the Tulpacocha camp.

The second day is the longest, with about 10 hours of walking. You will pass through the Cuchillacocha lagoon or the Palcacocha lagoon, and you will cross the Huapi pass (5000 m) before arriving at the Cojup camp. The third day is a 3 hour descent. The itineraries according to the organisms can vary significantly.

It is a little touristy trail in Huaraz, with views over the high mountains, waterfalls and rivers.

Olleros-Chavín (3 days)

It is a 3-day trek that begins in the town of Olleros, follows a part of the famous Inca trail or Qhapaq Ñan, and ends at the archaeological site of Chavín. Therefore, it is an interesting mixture of landscape and culture.

And they are also llamas instead of donkeys carrying the luggage!

Other Walks and Activities

There are many things to see and do in Huaraz such as rafting on the Santa River, mountain biking in the Cañón del Pato, climbing in Hatun Machay, rappelling, zip-lining, etc.

  • You can also do many hikes that I have not mentioned in this article:
  • The hike in the Valley of Ischinca (3 days) in a shelter or a tent
  • The trek to Alpamayo (10 days)
  • The Cedro Trek (9 days) that allows you to cross the Cordillera Blanca
  • The Peak of Mateo (1 day) is short, but intense because you reach 5150m climbing
  • It's up to you, depending on how much time you have!

Entrance to the Huascarán National Park

The cost of entering the Huascarán National Park is 30 soles for 1 day, 60 soles for 2 or 3 days, or 150 soles for 4 to 30 days (per person).

Take into account that, in general, the entrance to the park is not included in the tours from Huaraz.

What is the weather like in Huaraz?

In the heights it can be hot during the day and very cold at night.

In the rainy season (from November to April) the temperature is around 11C. March is the rainiest month. But usually it only rains in the afternoon, and in the morning you can enjoy the sun.

In the dry season (May to October), which represents summer in the Andes, the temperature is around 15C. The rains are practically non-existent between June and September.

When to go to Huaraz?

The best time to visit Huaraz is from April to October to avoid the rainy season which is from November to mid-April.

How much time to visit Huaraz?

Most travelers stay in Huaraz for 3 days and 2 nights, taking the night bus from Lima.

If you don't have much time, I recommend 3 days in Huaraz, to take 1 day of acclimatization to the altitude and to be able to enjoy at least 2 full days of excursions.

It all depends on the hikes you want to do, since some are longer than others, but there are so many options that the ideal is to spend a week in Huaraz.

If you plan to do a multi-day hike, I recommend doing it only after the 3rd or 4th day to make sure your body is ready.

What to take to Huaraz?

  • Light clothing for the day and warm clothing for the night.
  • If you go in the rainy season (from November to April) do not forget to bring a raincoat.
  • You will easily find stores that rent all the equipment you will need.
  • Also bring water, sunscreen and good sunglasses as the sun is very strong at this altitude.

How to get to Huaraz?

By bus: buses leave Lima every day (ex: Cruz del Sur, Movil Tours and Ormeño) and the journey lasts 8 hours. If you don't want to waste a day on the bus, there are also night buses.

By plane: it is the fastest way to get to Huaraz since a flight from Lima only lasts one hour. Anta Airport is 15 minutes from Huaraz by car.

It is a long established fact that a reader will be distracted by the readable content of a page when looking at its layout. The point of using Lorem Ipsum is that it has a more-or-less normal distribution of letters, as opposed to using 'Content here, content here', making it look like readable English. Many desktop publishing packages and web page editors now use Lorem Ipsum as their default model text, and a search for 'lorem ipsum' will uncover many web sites still in their infancy.

Huaraz: Complete Travel Guide For Peru’s Hiking Capital

Snow-capped mountain in Peru's Cordillera Blanca

Travelers often say they’re going to Huaraz but the city is more often used as a stopover point before journeying into the Cordillera Blanca – where the real action is.

The Cordillera Blanca is touted as the mountaineering capital of Peru. Its name means White Range which hints at the wonderland of picturesque glacier lagoons and less trodden trails that are amid these snow capped mountains. Here, trekkers, rock climbers, runners, and mountain bikers have access to world-class experiences without mass crowds. Even folks who visit Huaraz and prefer a lighter agenda of day excursions by car with minimal walking are easily overwhelmed by the region’s beauty.

Huaraz Attractions

Huascarán national park.

Declared a protected natural area by UNESCO in 1985, Huascaran National Park safeguards 340,000 hectares of the Cordillera Blanca. It’s home to more than 27 mountains above 6,000 meters but none surpass the soaring 6,768 meter (22,205 feet) summit of Mount Huascaran – Peru’s highest peak. Alongside rugged mountains are turquoise lakes, deep ravines, glaciers, and a diversity of vegetation types. With some luck you may spot local wildlife favorites like vicunas or Andean condors .

Santa Cruz Trek

Glaciers clinging to jagged mountaintops, piercing turquoise lagoons, and grazing herds of alpacas amid river ravines are around every bend of the Santa Cruz Trek. These striking landscapes are no doubt why this trek is the most popular option in the Cordillera Blanca. Typically organized on a 4-day/3-night itinerary, the daily walking distances and uphill climbs paired with the high altitudes make the Santa Cruz Trek best suited for people in good physical condition.

Laguna 69 is one of the most recognized day hikes within Huascaran National Park. The uphill journey to Laguna 69’s blue waters backed by snow covered peaks is your picture perfect reward. It takes about 3 hours to arrive to the lagoon, and 2 hours to return.

“I loved this hike! It starts off in a beautiful field with streams and cows before you start going up. All the views throughout the hike were gorgeous and the lake itself was nice and bright blue. This is a hike I’d recommended for active people.” – Rachel W, Travel Advisor

Llanganuco Lakes

Sandwiched between towering cliff faces, these iconic lakes in the national park sit at the bottom of the Huascaran Peaks. On a sunny day their waters are a dazzling shade of turquoise. Driving into the park, the first Llanganuco Lake of Chinancocha is often dotted with rowboats filled with passengers. The other lake is Orconcocha. Along the lakes’ shores you’ll come across trees with unusually flakey red trunks known as queñua trees that grow in high Andean regions.

Rock Climbing

Huaraz is likely on your Peru trip planning radar if you’re a person who spends their weekends scaling walls and a lot of free time at the local indoor climbing gym. Accessible from Huaraz are numerous routes for sport climbing and bouldering.

Chavín de Huántar

In a region where nature gets most of the limelight, the archaeological site of Chavin de Huantar (near Huaraz) reminds us of the early human civilizations that called these mountains their home. This pre-Inca complex is a UNESCO site that served as a ceremonial and pilgrimage center. The lithic art and symbolic carvings that decorate the plazas and columns are among its most significant features.

At Chavin de Huantar visitors can marvel at the rich history and culture of the Chavín culture , which is believed to have developed from 900 BC to 200 BC. The site consists of a principal pyramid-shaped temple that presides over a large plaza. Walls were constructed from large stone slabs, polished and stacked one atop the other. One of the Chavin site’s most extraordinary facets is the abundance of stone art – carvings, sculptures , pottery , and tenon heads   – decorated with plant, animal, and human motifs. Depictions of jaguars, monkeys, serpents, eagles, and caimans are common.

Lanzón Stela at Chavín de Huántar

Beneath the pyramid structure is an enigmatic maze of underground passageways with a single entrance. Small ducts circulate air into the tunnels and transmit sun beams from the outside, creating plays of light and shadow on the carved iconography of the gray stone walls. The passages also display remarkable acoustics ; the sound of water rushing into the temple via small canals becomes amplified and replicates the roar of a jaguar. Most thrilling of all is the Lanzón de Chavin , a knife-shaped stone monolith carved with the figure of an anthropomorphic god with a feline mouth and a head of snakes.

First excavated by the famed Peruvian archaeologist Julio C. Tello in the early 1900s, Chavin retains many of its mysteries. The ruins feature a museum which boasts a number of original artifacts, but many have been taken to museums in Lima and replicas put in their place.

Huayhuash Circuit Trek

The Huayhuash mountain range neighbors the Cordillera Blanca in Peru. Noted as one of South America’s premier multi day treks, the Cordillera Huayhuash Circuit is packed with high mountain passes, glacial lagoons, hot springs, and remote villages. The 8 to 14 day itinerary for the Huayhuash Circuit – frequently compared to trail routes in Nepal – is far more demanding than the classic 4-day Inca Trail to Machu Picchu in southern Peru. Most people organize their Huayhuash expedition from trekking providers based in Huaraz.

Trail Running

Each year a growing number of events bring runners to the Cordillera Blanca. These include the 45K Sierra Andina Chavin Trail and the Sierra Andina Mountain Trail.

Pastoruri Glacier

The Cordillera Blanca is home to some of the highest tropical glaciers in the world. In total, the range tallies over 700 glaciers, and one of these ice masses is Pastoruri. Like many destinations within Huascaran National Park, Pastoruri resides in a very remote location and there is no direct public transportation to get there, so the best way to reach the glacier is by tour.

Santa Cruz Trek Info

Altitude map of the Santa Cruz Trek

Violeta from Chavin Tours in Huaraz answered some common questions about the Santa Cruz Trek:

Why is the Santa Cruz Trek so popular in Huaraz?

The Santa Cruz Trek takes you to beautiful areas full of nature. The trek follows a path with breathtaking views, quenual forests, lagoons, rivers and other attractions of the Santa Cruz ravine.

What are unexpected highlights along the Santa Cruz trail?

Definitely all the spectacular views of the Cordillera Blanca. It’s breathtaking!

What is the most challenging day of the trek? Why?

The third day is the most difficult one as the highest point of the trail goes over a mountain pass of 4,750 msnm. High altitude trekking is always a challenge!

The Santa Cruz Trek is best suited for what type of outdoor lover?

The Santa Cruz Trek is one of the best in the region and is suited to trekker in good physical condition. Training in advance is a must as it’s a high altitude trek. There is also others good treks such as Cedros Alpamayo and Huayhuash that are also challenging!

Lesser-known Hikes Near Huaraz

The most publicized hikes are located on the North side of the Cordillera Blanca approximately 60 to 100 km (37 to 62 mi) from Huaraz , a town that serves as the region’s home base for climbers, hikers, and other outdoor adventurers. Typically, any given hike takes around 2.5 to 3.5 hours one way of travel time to reach the trailhead, equating up to a 10 to 12 hour day. Time and distance combined with large numbers of people to popular areas during high seasons, take away from the beauty and silence of the mountains.

A great benefit of the southern side of the Cordillera Blanca is the access from Huaraz . Travel time to the trailheads take between 45 minutes to 2 hours of driving one way, and there is minimal to no tourists . There you will find day hikes that are equal in beauty to the northern hikes in terms of the glaciers and lakes that make the Cordillera Blanca unique. Below we share 3 of our favorite hikes on the southern side of the Cordillera Blanca (that you probably haven’t heard of): Laguna Rajucolta, Quebrada Shallap, and Quebrada Llaca.

Laguna Rajucolta

This is a good day hike for acclimatizing as the lake sits about 250 m (820 ft) lower than most lakes in the Cordillera Blanca, the hike is shorter than most and it’s a gentle incline from the trailhead gates to the lake, making it a great acclimatization hike .

The snow-capped mountain of Huantsán as seen from the path to Laguna Rajucolta.

The added bonus is there’s never many hikers and you are rewarded with a crystal blue lake cradled under the towering Nevado Huantsan which boasts an impressive height of 6,395 m (20,984 ft) and is the 2 nd highest mountain in the Cordillera Blanca. While it requires more driving than the other two hikes, the payoff is driving by the massive Puya Raimondis , the largest bromeliads in the world, right off of the road, past the indigenous village of Macashca.

Trail Stats: Rajucolta

  • The hike is out and back and takes about 5 to 6 hours, (2 hours longer if going up to the glacier)
  • Total round-trip is 13 km (8 mi).
  • Elevation gain is 450 m (1,476 ft).

johnny tours huaraz

  • Laguna Rajucolta is at 4,250 m (13,944 ft).
  • The entrance is via the small town of Macashca located 20 minutes outside of Huaraz. Follow the road over an 18 km (11 mi) bumpy dirt road, when it splits stay to the right, to the Huascaran National Park gates. It typically takes about 1.5 hours to travel to the park gates from the city center of Huaraz. If you are feeling good you can hike up to the glacier and get up-close and personal with Mountain Huantsan.

Quebrada Shallap

Quebrada Shallap is a great day hike for people that are still acclimatizing but would like to experience Huascaran National Park and its iconic lakes. This can also be a great option for older or younger trekkers that need a gentler ascent with a lake at a lower elevation , as Lake Shallap is almost 250 m (850 ft) lower than other lakes in the area.

A snow-capped Andean Mountain as seen from the Shallap Valley.

While hiking through the mounds of the valley you will find chozas, traditional resting huts , and frequently see the local indigenous people in large skirts and tall hats tending their fields. Typically you won’t find any tourists in the area and only the Quechua speaking locals.

A rustic shelter along the path to Quebrada Shallap.

The valley is filled with large boulders the size of whales , in fact the word “Shallap” is the Quechua word for place of boulders.  As the trail flattens out into a meadow you have panoramic views of the area peaks, the largest is San Juan looming an impressive 5,780 meters (18,963 feet) overhead. This hike is also known for a large cave you can explore when ascending the scree field to the lake.

Trail Stats: Quebrada Shallap

  • Generally the hike takes between 5 to 6 hours.
  • The hike is 16 km (10 mi) out and back, but feels shorter due to the gentle ascent.
  • From Huaraz, the best way to get to the trailhead is from the small village of Jancu, located about 1 hour outside of Huaraz.
  • From Jancu the elevation gain is 350 m in 8 km (1,150 ft in 5 mi).
  • Drive to the small town of Jancu to the mouth of the Shallap Valley. From here you head to the left and follow the path to the National Park boundary and up the valley. When the river meets the scree, field stay to the right to access the cave and lake.

Quebrada Llaca

Llaca Valley is one of the most under-used hikes and lakes on the southern side of the Cordillera Blanca and is characterized by a celestial blue glacial lake surrounded by the three glaciers : Oshcapalca, Ranrapalca and Vallanaraju.

Llaca Lake overlooked by snow-capped Andean mountains in Huascarán National Park near Huaraz.

Llaca is one of the few hikes that allows you to get close enough to the glaciers to notice their sounds and movement , which can be very ethereal. In the Llaca Valley you also find a dense forest of endangered Polylepis trees which serves as a habitat to birds that are rare in the area, such as the Giant Conebill and the Pied Crested Tit-Tyrant to name a few.

Years ago a road was built to facilitate building a dam to help control the lake level as the melting of the glaciers created a surplus of water. After the road was built the park service built a refugio in hopes it would bring more climbers, but it hasn’t happened. Currently the refugio is rarely open to the public and is used by the Casa de Guias (a local guide association) for large group climbing courses, wilderness first aid courses and training exercises for the Peruvian military for outdoor rescue. The road is hardly used due to its rough condition and currently the only traffic you’ll find are hikers or climbers that are headed to the base camps to climb one of the surrounding peaks.

Trail Stats: Llaca

  • The Llaca Lake hike takes about 7 to 8 hours starting on the single track above Caserio Cachipampa.
  • The total hike is 15 km (9.3 mi) and is an out and back trail.
  • Elevation gain is 850 m (2,788 ft) in 7 km (4.7 mi).
  • The lake is located at 4,550 m (14,600 ft) and it’s best hiked after at least 48 hours of acclimatization.
  • The Llaca hike starts a few steps up from a white post marked KM 12, across from “The Lazy Dog Inn” sign on the Wilcahuain/Llaca Country Road above Caserio Cachipampa, and is marked with a painted boulder placed on the right side of the trail.

A small river and some bright green and yellow grass on the path to Laguna Llaca near Huaraz.

Llaca Trail Bonus, For Serious Trekkers

If you want more of a challenge, you can add a hiking loop to the Vallunaraju Base Camp where you can gain an additional 400 m (1,300 ft) in elevation then descend through the adjacent valley coming out next to an indigenous community called Uquia. This add-on offers two more high glacier lakes and sweeping views of Ocshapalca, Ranrapalca, and Vallunaraju glaciers.

  • This add-on to Llaca will take a total of 10 to 12 hours by foot or with car support to the Llaca Lake Refugio 5 to 6 hours.
  • Elevation gain is 1,250 m (4,101 ft).
  • As the base camp is located at at 4,950 m (16,240 ft) you will want at least 3 days of acclimatization before attempting this hike.
  • The extension start is located approximately 200 meters before the Refugio Llaca, marked by a small concrete staircase. Follow the staircase and the trail markers up a steep incline for 1.5 hours to a hut at Campo Morrena, located at 4,950 m (16,240 ft). From Campo Morrena follow the trail markers across the sloping rock faces, passing two glacier lakes on the right. To descend follow the sign post marked “A Uquia”, which descends half way down the adjacent valley through a quenal forest, passing the National Park border until you reach the main country road next to the Caserio of Uquia. Turn left and a 45-minute walk will bring you to The Lazy Dog Inn , turn right and a 45-minute walk will bring you to the Wilcahuain ruins.

Huaraz Travel Tips

Follow this essential info and advice for planning your trip to Huaraz.

How to Get to Huaraz

Take the bus, fly, or drive to Huaraz from Lima. The city of Huaraz is the region’s main transport hub.

Bus travel is the easiest and most affordable way to get from Lima to Huaraz. Daily departures also permit more trip planning flexibility if you don’t know your desired travel dates far in advance.

  • Direct bus service Lima to/from Huaraz is about 8 hours
  • Lima – Javier Prado Bus Terminal
  • Huaraz – bus companies have separate terminals

Cruz del Sur, Movil Tours, and Oltursa are reputable bus companies that offer comfortable service to Huaraz. Upgrading your ticket to VIP generally includes a fully reclinable seat, a personal TV screen with entertainment, and meal/snack service. Travel Tip: Take the overnight bus to Huaraz. That way you arrive to Huaraz early in the morning between 6 to 7 am and can maximize daylight hours to acclimate and soak in the region’s beautiful scenery.

The 45-minute flight from Lima to Anta Airport in Huaraz is the most time efficient transport. Flights are best booked from May to September during the dry season months. Inclement weather may delay flights or cancel them altogether during the rainy season. Update: As of 2020, flight service is not available to Huaraz. Contact Peru for Less for help planning your trip to Huaraz and up-to-date transport details.

The journey from Lima to Huaraz in your own transport takes approximately 5 to 6 hours. Traveling during the daytime is advised due to the curvy road conditions and limited phone coverage in the mountains.

Altitude Sickness in Huaraz

Soaring elevations of 9,840+ feet (3,000+ meters) greet you in Huaraz and the Cordillera Blanca. Monique, our general manager at Peru for Less, shares her advice for adjusting to the altitude:

“In Huaraz, most activities start early in the morning (especially treks) so try not to cram too much in; your body will already be dealing with altitude and the long bus ride from Lima.

Acclimatization in Huaraz is more key than Cusco, arguably. Why? I arrived super tired from the bus ride, so the combination of little sleep plus higher altitude meant I was out of it for the first day completely. In general, this is a region for doing more outdoor and adventure activities so you want to make sure you’re feeling as good as possible.

Ideally, arrive at least 2 days before starting any rigorous activity. Don’t have anything planned for the first day you arrive, and on the second day consider doing one of those van tours. Lago Llanganuco was great, for example, with several stops and a modest amount of walking. Don’t feel guilty about taking it easy!”

Huaraz Packing List

Don’t forget to pack these essential items for your trip to Huaraz:

  • Passport (valid for at least 6 months after the end of your trip).
  • Copies of passport, visas, travel itinerary, credit cards (front and back), travel insurance, and emergency contact information.
  • Trekking or hiking boots/shoes.
  • Shoes to wear after hikes.
  • Quick-dry long sleeve top.
  • Hiking pants.
  • Rain jacket with hood and/or rain poncho.
  • Warm down jacket.
  • Warm fleece beanie.
  • Fleece gloves.
  • Sun hat with brim and chin strap.
  • Trekking backpack.
  • Trekking poles (these mountains are rugged).
  • Water containers (Nalgene or similar water bottle, 32oz or reservoirs).
  • Flashlight or headlamp.
  • Lots of sunscreen.
  • Insect repellent.
  • Compressed toilet paper.
  • Day snacks (nuts, chocolates, energy bars).
  • First aid kit.
