15 Secrets of Disney’s Jungle Cruise You Might Not Know

Ever since opening in Disneyland in 1955, the Jungle Cruise has been one of the “boulder attractions” amongst guests who don't take adventure for “granite.” Due to its popularity at the Anaheim location, the ride was introduced to the Magic Kingdom in Orlando and officially opened with the park in October 1971.

Since its inception, this classic adventure has whisked millions of eager explorers away on a journey through dense, exotic landscapes, teeming with animatronic wildlife. Walt himself called the ride “the waterways of our man-made jungle.” The Jungle Cruise boasts an approximately 10-minute boat ride through “10,000 miles” of river wilderness, encompassing the Egyptian Nile, the African Congo, the Amazon in South America, and the Southeast Asian Mekong River.

In this exploration of the Jungle Cruise's hidden wonders, we'll delve into the secrets and behind-the-scenes tricks that bring this jungle to life. This includes the meticulous craftsmanship, the clever storytelling techniques that unfold along the riverbanks, and the artistry behind creating an immersive experience that has stood the test of time.

So come aboard, fellow adventurers, as we navigate these waters and discover the enchanting mysteries that make the Jungle Cruise an enduring favorite among Disney enthusiasts of all ages.

It Was Originally the Only Ride in Adventureland

is disney jungle cruise on a track

As the gates of Disneyland swung open in 1955, Adventureland made its debut, featuring a lone attraction that stole the show – the Jungle Cruise. Drawing inspiration from Disney's acclaimed True-Life Adventures documentary films and the movie The African Queen , the ride and its surrounding area became a gateway to wild and captivating narratives.

In the early stages, there was a plan to christen the area “True-Life Adventure Land,”  a nod to the documentary series that fueled its creation. However, simplicity prevailed, and the name was gracefully shortened to the now-iconic “Adventureland.”

Real Animals Were Almost Used

is disney jungle cruise on a track

In the early days of envisioning the Jungle Cruise, Walt Disney himself dreamt of infusing a touch of authenticity by featuring live animals on the attraction. His passion for creating immersive experiences led him to contemplate the idea of incorporating real wildlife to bring the jungle to life. However, practical challenges and safety concerns soon became apparent. Maintaining the well-being of the animals, ensuring their safety and the safety of the visitors, and the unpredictability and inconsistency of live creatures in a controlled environment posed significant hurdles.

In the spirit of innovation, Disney opted for a groundbreaking solution–Audio Animatronics. This decision not only addressed the logistical challenges but also allowed for a level of creative control that would ensure a consistent and magical experience for every guest. By pioneering the use of animatronics in Jungle Cruise, Disney successfully blended imagination with technology, creating a timeless attraction that captures the essence of the wild in a safe and enchanting manner.

The Skippers Don't Drive the Boat

is disney jungle cruise on a track

While the charismatic skippers of the Jungle Cruise may appear to be masterfully navigating the winding rivers with expert precision, there's a delightful secret beneath the surface–the boats are actually on a track! Yes, the magic of Disney extends even to the waterways of this iconic attraction.

Behind the scenes, the boats are guided along an unseen track beneath the surface, ensuring a seamless and controlled journey through the exotic landscapes. What makes the experience truly enchanting is the skillful touch of the skippers. The skippers excel in making you believe they are steering the ship with ease with perfectly timed spins of the captain's wheel. While they can control the speed of the boat and move it forwards and backward, the track guides the boat along the Jungle Cruise's journey. This way, the skippers can focus on bringing the adventure to life with their wit and “niles and niles” of punny jokes.

There's Something in the Water

Have you ever wondered why the water on the Jungle Cruise river has such a murky appearance? Personally, I have. Come to find out, it's not a natural muckiness! In fact, it's Imagineers employing a clever technique!

The Imagineers introduced a water-soluble dye, tinted in green-brown hues, to give the water an authentic jungle aesthetic. Located behind the “Eighth Wonder of the World” a large pump disperses the dye into the water.

Beyond its visual impact, this dye serves a crucial purpose—it conceals the boat tracks and wiring essential for the animatronics. It also helps give the illusion that the water is much deeper, like it would be in the wild. In reality, the water is only about 4 feet deep in most areas. This thoughtful technique ensures that guests remain fully immersed in the jungle ambiance.

Sensors Help the Skippers

“Does anyone know what kind of snake that is? Begins with P… not Python – good guess though! Plastic!” – Anonymous Skipper

Personally, I was always curious how the skippers had such impeccable timing with their jokes hitting at the exact right moment with an animatronic. If you’ve ever wondered about this too, wonder no more–it's no mere coincidence!

According to DisneyFanatic.com and TPM Vids , there are sensors in The Jungle Cruise that trigger a specific effect to go off when the boat passes. This clever technological integration allows skippers to synchronize their narration and punch lines perfectly. Harnessing the ability to control the boat's speed, skippers ensure that their witty commentary aligns precisely with the sensor signals preceding each animatronic encounter.

An Animator Added the Fun

“It’s okay to take pictures folks, they all have their trunks on.” – Anonymous Skipper

When The Jungle Cruise initially debuted in 1955, it embraced a more educational tone reminiscent of the documentaries that inspired its creation. However, by the early 1960s, Walt Disney envisioned injecting additional drama and humor into the ride to enhance the overall experience. To bring this vision to life, he enlisted the talents of animator Marc Davis, one of Disney's esteemed “Nine Old Men.”

Starting his journey with Disney in 1935 as an animator for “Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs,” Davis became a crucial collaborator on various iconic rides, including Haunted Mansion, Jungle Cruise, it's a small world, and Pirates of the Caribbean. Walt Disney's request for humorous sketches from Davis marked the beginning of transforming the once-serious wilderness into a “wise-cracking” adventure. Among Davis' notable contributions is the creation of the Elephant Pool scene, leaving a lasting mark on the Jungle Cruise's whimsical evolution.

Too Good for Backstage

In addition to his work on the Jungle Cruise, Marc Davis was enlisted to create entertaining scenes adorning the outskirts of various lands visible from the train, serving as lively advertisements for the attractions within. According to a Marc Davis conversation with Disney Archaeologist Scott Wolf detailed in a Keeping the Magic Alive YouTube video and The Kingdom Insider article , the “Trapped Safari” scene was initially designed as a promotional visual. However, Walt Disney, captivated by Davis' ingenuity, declared that it had to be in the ride.

Fast forward to today, and the once-promotional sketch has evolved into a cherished fan-favorite scene on the attraction. Notably, it has become the “butt-of-the-joke” for many of the skippers' witty punch lines.

Easter Eggs Laid by The Rock

is disney jungle cruise on a track

In July 2021, Walt Disney Pictures unveiled the highly anticipated summer blockbuster “Jungle Cruise,” featuring the dynamic duo of Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson and Emily Blunt. While the Jungle Cruise attraction predates the movie, the film drew inspiration from the iconic Disneyland ride. Disneyland's queue, in a stroke of cinematic magic, received some delightful Easter Eggs courtesy of the movie.

Notably, across from Dr. Kon Chunosuke’s insect collection, visitors will discover the map from the film—a map that Dr. Lily (Emily Blunt) reveals to Skipper Frank (Dwayne Johnson), leading them on a quest to find an ancient, powerful healing tree poised to revolutionize medicine.

The Disneyland queue holds additional hidden gems from the movie. Dr. Lily and Skipper Frank's attire is suspended behind Alberta Falls’ office door in the Jungle Cruise boathouse. Frank's coat also adorns Alberta's office, discreetly placed behind a wicker hutch. Further intrigue awaits in the Safari Supply Storage Room, where a Conquistador's helmet serves as another nod to the film's adventurous narrative.

Recent Changes to the Jungle Cruise Attraction

is disney jungle cruise on a track

Returning visitors to Disneyland and Magic Kingdom will notice a change in the Jungle Cruise attraction, as the character known as the “Head Salesman” Trader Sam is no longer present in person. Following a 2021 refurbishment at both parks, which aimed to address concerns about cultural sensitivity, several scenes underwent renovations to ensure they were more respectful to Indigenous people.

In response to criticisms regarding the representation of Indigenous people on the ride, Disney Parks took action in January 2021. The refurbishments were designed to “reflect and value the diversity of the world around us.”

As part of these changes, scenes featuring a war party with spears, native dancers, and Trader Sam selling shrunken heads have been completely removed from the attraction. However, Trader Sam is still part of the ride in a different capacity, as guests can now encounter him within the new “Gift Shop,” where he sells explorers' lost items.

Special Holiday Overlays

is disney jungle cruise on a track

During the merriest season of the year, both Disneyland and Disney World once joined in the festive transformation of The Jungle Cruise, giving rise to the enchanting “Jingle Cruise” holiday overlay. While Disneyland stopped doing this festive overlay in 2017, Disney World still partakes in the merriment every year.

From early November through approximately the first week in January, the classic attraction dons holiday decor, ushering guests into a yuletide wonderland.  This joyous holiday makeover, accessible to all park visitors and not exclusive to Christmas event party-goers, brings a delightful twist to the Jungle Cruise experience. The animatronics and scenes get a festive facelift with whimsical decorations, and even the jokes take on a special holiday flair. It's a seasonal spectacle that infuses an extra dose of magic into the already boisterous attraction, making the Jingle Cruise a must-see holiday treat for all park-goers.

Head Off to Adventure

Embark on a river cruise where dangerous beasts and dry wit abound. Board a canopied tramp steamer piloted by your trusty skipper, who will expertly navigate you through some of the world’s most treacherous waters.

Steam past lush foliage, butterflies and waterfalls on the Amazon in South America. Glimpse an abandoned camp overrun by curious gorillas on the shores of the African Congo.

Along the Nile, watch for bathing elephants, angry hippos and hungry lions. Be on the lookout for a tribe of headhunters recently spotted in the area. Your cruise continues down the Mekong River in Asia, home to baboons, cobras and other fearsomely life-like creatures.

The Disney World Jungle Cruise ride is a Disney classic. It goes back to the days of Walt Disney, and is one of his original creations. Being an original ride, the Jungle Cruise holds many secrets.

View this post on Instagram A post shared by Seconds to Go at Disney (@seconds2go_at_disney)

What is Disney World’s Jungle Cruise?

On Disney World’s Jungle Cruise, inside of the Magic Kingdom, you board a boat for a “multi week” journey through rivers of Asia, Africa, and South America.

Through your journey, you’ll see animatronics of various animals including elephants, zebras, lions, monkeys, gorillas, and more. All while taking in the sights, your boat skipper will tell a slew of punny jokes.

Jungle Cruise Inspiration

While Disney World’s Jungle Cruise is based off of the original inside of Disneyland. The Disneyland original inspired Walt to keep things changing and forever improving inside the parks.

After hearing a mother tell her son they were not going to ride the Jungle Cruise again because they had already experienced it, Walt decided to always change, evolve, and improve the parks he built.

Water Color of Disney World’s Jungle Cruise

Have you ever ridden rides at Walt Disney World and noticed the color of the water? Disney often adds dye to the water rides to fit the theming as well as cover the ride tracks below.

In the Jungle Cruise, the water is dyed, and the color has changed over the years. Originally it was more green, then brown, and today it is a greenish/ brown color.

Elephants on the JUngle Cruise Ride

What is Under the Water?

Under the water of the Jungle Cruise ride are not alligators, hippos, or even fish. Instead, the dark water hides the track for the boats.

The skippers do drive the boats forwards and backwards, but they do not actually steer them.

Nighttime Rides on the Disney World Jungle Cruise

When riding Disney World’s Jungle Cruise ride, don’t just take the tour during the day. A nighttime ride can be just as much fun, or even more.

In the dark, the skippers shine flashlights at the views in the tour. You’ll also get different jokes that only work at night.

Boat Approaching the Dock on the Disney World Jungle Cruise Ride

The Jingle Cruise

The Disneyland and Disney World Jungle Cruise become the Jingle Cruise each holiday season. The boats and many of the animatronics are decked out for the holidays, and even the queue changes. Holiday themed jokes are added by the cast members during the boat trip as well.

Be sure to check out the new holiday names on the boats for a laugh.

Real Animals and Plants

When Walt Disney designed the Disneyland Jungle Cruise, which was later recreated as the Disney World Jungle Cruise, he wanted to utilize real animals and authentic plants to the location.

Unfortunately, the animals would be very costly to care for and purchase and ship to the park. Instead, the animatronic animals were used as a cost friendly alternative.

Later on, the idea of exotic animals on display for guests became the Animal Kingdom park.

An Example of the foliage on the Jungle Cruise.

Additionally, Walt wanted authentic plants inside of the Jungle Cruise. These plants were very costly and many did not grow well in the climate the park was in.

Instead, the Imagineers created a “Hollywood Jungle” using native and authentic plants that mimicked the real thing.

Guest Skipper

Caste members working at Disney World’s Jungle Cruise can give guest the opportunity to become a Guest Skipper. This comes with a specialty souvenir card and the opportunity to skip the line.

Cast members typically pick a guest who has a birthday or anniversary pin, or is celebrating something.

True Life Scenes of the Disney World Jungle Cruise

Many scenes from the opening day Walt Disney World Jungle Cruise, and Disneyland version were based off of some short films produced by Walt Disney Productions.

The True Life Adventures were a series of short documentary films about wildlife and nature. Many of the ideas for scenes depicted in the original Jungle Cruise come from scenes in these films.

Disney World’s Jungle Cruise and The Great Movie Ride

Disney World’s Jungle Cruise ride shares a secret with the now defunct Great Movie ride which used to reside in Hollywood Studios. The Great Movie Ride was a slow moving ride which took guests through scenes from classic movies, and even had some guest and cast member interaction in those scenes.

The ride was recently replaced by Mickey and Minnie’s Runaway Railway. But, during its run, the Great Movie Ride had a scene from Casablanca, featuring an airplane.

The airplane is a Lockheed Model 12 Electra Junior plane, and the front half was used for the Casablanca scene. Airplanes are expensive, so to get more bang for their buck, Disney placed the back half of the plane in the Disney World Jungle Cruise ride.

Pirates are Nearby

During parts of the Jungle Cruise ride, the show building for Pirates of the Caribbean can be scene through the foliage if you look closely. Most guests do not notice this because the skippers draw attention to animatronics and scenes in the opposite direction.

Jungle Cruise Disney World ride review

Jungle Cruise Disney World ride review

The Jungle Cruise, nestled inside Adventure Land at the edge of Disney’s Magic Kingdom park, is a classic attraction. The idea for the classic attraction was born in the mid 1950’s and has been a hit ever since. While it’s not the most thrilling or visually stimulating ride at Disney’s Magic Kingdom, it holds appeal for a lot of different age groups and demographics.

It’s one of the few rides that Guests in wheelchairs don’t have to transfer out of – many attractions claim to be handicapped accessible but often require the Guest to be able transfer from the wheelchair to the ride vehicle – the Jungle Cruise is able to allow Guests to stay in their wheelchairs but still have the pleasure of experiencing a moving attraction. It also is accessible for children of any age, any height and many languages, including American Sign Language.

First Impressions

Upon entering Adventure Land from Main Street (where Cinderella’s Castle is located), you will find yourself walking through a jungle themed area. A strong smell of grass washes over Guests as they enter this land, and many consider this part of the experience. Unfortunately, many also find the scent overwhelming and migraine inducing. Either way, this smell can be avoided if Guests enter from the back side of Adventure Land (near the Pirates of the Caribbean ride ), which is connected to Frontier Land.

Magic Kingdom Resort Hotels

If you do end up walking in the main entrance and enjoying (or enduring) the scent, you will be greeted first with lovely tropical plants that lead to the Swiss Family Robinson Treehouse before making your way past and down a hill to the left into the queue for the Jungle Cruise attraction.

The ride is meant to look a bit run down and put together by hand, as if you’ve stumbled across an expedition in the wild jungle. The queue line is mostly covered from the sun and does have large fans, but it is still outside. If you have one of those portable fans that also spray water, you’ll probably want to bring it along for the wait. Tight quarters in the Florida heat can often mean that even if it is well-circulated, it’s still stuffy and humid.

In addition to environmental discomfort, isn’t much to do in the queue line either. Aside from a few well-themed crates, clever signs and allusions to a grander story, it’s a pretty bare queue. You will probably want to bring a phone to play a game on, especially if you have restless children. As you progress through the line, you’ll see Cast Members who work there, deemed “skippers,” who will direct you with phrases that will even get the dads in your group to groan. As you approach the end of the line, you’ll get sectioned off into another line and boarded onto a boat.

The boats in the Jungle Cruise are all real boats and while there are some areas that have bumpers, it does not have a track. In addition, the water can get up to 102 inches or 260 centimeters (over eight feet!). Because these are real boats and not simply cars on a track, the Cast Members are extensively trained in safety and will enforce it. Everyone must be sitting on their “back pockets” with their appendages inside the boat at all times.

They will stop the boat and call you out on it if you don’t. I have ridden this attraction over fifty times and I can personally attest that it’s done for safety. I have seen Guests almost get their arms crushed because they dangle them out of the boats. For a seven-year-old child, the weight of the boat against the dock is enough to break bones. Just be aware of your children and know that if someone mentions something, it’s for your own safety.

Fast Pass+ Reservation

Whether you should use a Fast Pass+ reservation for this ride will depend entirely upon your preferences. If you prefer thrill rides, save them for the coasters. If you prefer character meet-and-greets, save them for Mickey and the princesses; however, if you prefer classic attractions and want something that is fun for the entire family, Jungle Cruise should be at the top of your list.

Typically, the wait for this attraction isn’t outrageously long but it can get to be over an hour on a busy day. The queue line isn’t terribly exciting, and the wait is outside so there are better rides that provide more entertainment (and air-conditioning!) for your wait. Also, because this attraction is on the water, there are inevitably more mosquitos and humidity than in the rest of the park. It gets sticky and uncomfortable if you have to wait longer than half an hour. For that reason alone, I would suggest using a Fast Pass+ Reservation on this attraction if you don’t need it for the higher demand rides.

If it’s a nice day and you go in the morning or evening, a Fast Pass+ Reservation probably isn’t needed; however, if you aren’t able to make it during those perfect conditions, a Fast Pass+ Reservation is going to make the experience much more pleasant. It should be noted that it does occasionally close early on event days like Halloween parties and After-Hours events so getting there in the morning is always the best bet if you don’t want to use a Fast Pass+ Reservation. Also, it is an entirely outdoor, water attraction so if there is any lightening in a certain radius, it will be shut down. Safety first!

One unfortunate feature of this attraction is how Fast Pass+ Reservation Guests are handled. All standby Guests enter one queue line while Guests who have Fast Pass+ Reservations enter another. This is typical for Walt Disney World Resort; however, eventually, the two lines converge.

Thankfully, a Cast Member directs the convergence, but it can still make for some nasty stares when a Fast Pass+ Guest walks right in front of a Guest who has been waiting there for an hour. Ideally, the attraction would feature two entirely different lines that do not intersect like many other attractions but for now, you might have to avoid eye contact with some exasperated parents who didn’t choose to secure a Fast Pass+ Reservation for the Jungle Cruise.

Attraction Features

Once you decide if you’re going to use a Fast Pass+ Reservation on the Jungle Cruise, you can finally enjoy and immerse yourself into the story of the Jungle Cruise. Guests are taken on a boat tour of the Nile River and quickly they find out that things don’t exactly go as planned. The skipper leading your expedition will point out animals, locations and other interesting facts but the best part is undoubtedly the monologue each Cast Member prepares.

The skippers dive head first into puns, “dad” jokes and other dry witticisms. Each skipper has a unique slant to the story and they will perform their own curated jokes along with the tried and true classics. Along the ride, you’ll see local “headhunters,” camps that have been wrecked by animatronic animals and even their local celebrity, the Rock!

In addition to the corny humor, if you pay close attention, there is a tale to be unearthed in the attraction. The attraction wasn’t originally based on a Disney film, so it was given a backstory. The atmosphere and props used suggest that it was set in the late 1920’s. It is expedition based and it features a clash between the “modern” world and that of the natives in the Nile River area.

“Modern” men find there is a steep learning curve between the wild animals and crashed planes to hostile natives and ancient tradition. It’s based loosely on the past but mostly uses the past as a jumping off point for the rest of the narrative. For a more thorough history of this attraction, click here .

Popular Disney designers and engineers (referred to as Imagineers by the Walt Disney World Company) are mentioned in the story and via props so any Disney history buff is sure to love this attraction. There are lots of hidden Mickeys (more on those here ) and each detail was considered before opening the attraction. Even if you’re not one of the people who is super knowledgeable about Disney history (often affectionally referred to as Disnerds ), it is still an enjoyable attraction and excellent for the entire family to enjoy.

Child-Friendly

Most children will probably not understand the jokes but it’s a nice rest for ten minutes with plenty for them to look at. Walt Disney wanted his parks to be enjoyable for both old and young Guests and this attraction exemplifies this beautifully. The older Guests will appreciate the wry humor and the younger Guests are likely to enjoy the waterfalls, giant animals and many other sights along the way.

In addition, there is no height requirement, making it an ideal choice for Guests looking at attractions in Disney World for toddlers . There are no drops or jump scares to startle young children. There also aren’t any harsh or jerky movements to scare Guests; however, there is one section of the tour that goes through an ancient tunnel.

The tunnel is dark but not pitch black. There are a few illuminated sections featuring golden statues but it’s generally uneventful. If nothing else, it’s one minute of cool air where Guests can actually look around at their surroundings and check in with their youngsters before emerging from the other side of the tunnel with more high energy jokes. If you want more details about accessibility, this is a great place to start.

Aside from any pictures you take yourself or recordings of your favorite jokes, the options to commemorate your visit to this attraction are not abundant. A few pieces of merchandise are sold in the nearby Agrabah Bazaar but compared to the surrounding rides, the pickings are slim. Fortunately, the company has recently started stationing a PhotoPass Photographer outside the ride.

The photographer typically has a sign Guests can hold that features the name of the attraction and will pose Guests in front of the ride queue, which is probably the best place to get a themed photo anyway. They are obliging enough to take it with your personal camera or with their very nice professional cameras and link it to a My Disney Experience PhotoPass account. More on Walt Disney World’s PhotoPass Service can be found here.

In general, this ride is a great option for the entire family. It features humor that isn’t inappropriate but is witty enough that the adults will love it (with a few simpler jokes thrown in for the kiddos). It is an enjoyable ten-minute ride where Guests can get a short reprieve from the unconventional amounts of walking Walt Disney World requires. It is accessible for any age and disability and it features ideas directly from Walt Disney.

In addition, if you’re planning to visit during the holidays, it makes the transition from the Jungle Cruise to the Jingle Cruise! It features new scenery, new costumes, new boats and best of all, new jokes. Because Cast Members are in charge of giving the tour, they have the luxury of changing the theming and do so to reflect the season.

This brings us to another fantastic aspect of the attraction: humans! As odd as this may seem, very few attractions feature actual humans anymore! Most feature screens or animatronics but there is nothing like having a living, breathing Cast Member with a personal sense of humor to provide a unique experience every time.

Overall, I give this attraction a rating of four out of five stars. If the queue line was airconditioned or even featured interactive elements, it would receive five stars.

But if you’re still trying to decide if this attraction warrants a visit for your vacation, take a look at my list of reasons why it’s one of the best rides at Disney World:

  • Walt Disney himself worked on this ride and was present for the original opening.
  • It is one of the few rides that wasn’t based on a Disney film and has a full backstory.
  • It is ten minutes of sitting, which can be welcome in the Florida heat!
  • All heights and ages are allowed on this attraction.
  • It is entirely handicapped accessible and Guests can stay in his or her wheelchair.
  • It features humans, which means every cruise will be different.
  • During the holiday season it transitions from Jungle Cruise to Jingle Cruise.
  • The humor is sure to elicit groans and inspire inside jokes for the rest of the trip.
  • It’s close to a lot of other larger attractions so if you’re waiting for a FastPass+ Reservation on Splash Mountain, Big Thunder Mountain or Pirates of the Caribbean, it’s a good way to spend some time without wasting it.
  • The Jungle Cruise sits across from arguably the best treat in Walt Disney World Resort – Dolewhip!

Five Things to Know About the Jungle Cruise

Every trip to Walt Disney World should include a couple classic attractions. Peter Pan, it’s a small world, and of course, the Jungle Cruise. If you’re a first-timer to WDW, you’ll want to be sure to add the Jungle Cruise to your itinerary – you won’t be sorry you did! And if you’ve ridden before, you already know why you need to sail again. Here are five things you should know about this classic pun-tastic ride – including why you should plan to be sent up the river on your next trip.

1. A river runs through it.

The full name of the attraction was originally the Jungle RIVER Cruise. Because you’re cruising down a river (four rivers actually, but we’ll get to that), not just through the jungle. It still bears that same name at Disneyland Hong Kong. But most of us continue to call it the Jungle Cruise, because who has time these days for an extra two syllables? I shore don’t.

2. You gotta go with the flow.

The original version at Disneyland was inspired by Walt Disney’s True-Life Adventures films and the classic movie, “The African Queen.” When it was first imagined, the attraction was way more serious than today – no jokes or puns at all. Walt wanted it to be more like Kilimanjaro Safaris in Animal Kingdom. He wanted live animals throughout the attraction before learning that wasn’t the best idea. When the Walt Disney World version opened on October 1, 1971, it was an instant hit.

As time passed, the Jungle Cruise became more about the skipper’s pun-filled narration and visual humor of the scenes. The freedom of the skippers to spin their own spiels while sticking loosely to a script means that you’ll never have exactly the same ride twice. And because the ride has been able to retain much of its vintage charm over the years, the Jungle Cruise remains a classic Disney attraction.

In January 2021, Disney made the announcement that the ride would be updated. New characters, new scenes, more humor, and more wildlife would be added. There was a sense that some of the scenes had become dated and out of step with the times. Scenes of the “headhunter” party and the Trader Sam “head salesman” – portraying negative representations of native peoples – would be eliminated. The experience would, as Bob Iger tweeted, “reflect, not only the best in storytelling, but also the values and rich diversity of our world.”

Seen through the side of a Jungle Cruise boat with the railing and canopy framing the picture are a partially sunken boat in the foreground and a yawning hippo in the background.

Updates at WDW were completed in August 2021 including:

  • a new skipper’s office in the queue
  • trapped skippers up the pole menaced by a rhino
  • a sunken boat near the hippos
  • chimps on the wrecked boat
  • and animatronic characters added to Trader Sam’s.

Worth noting: Back in 2013, the Magic Kingdom’s Jungle Cruise received one of the park’s first holiday overlays. The “Jingle Cruise” has holiday-themed jokes and Christmas decor courtesy of homesick skippers. This festive overlay is offered during the Disney Christmas season starting in November and ending shortly after New Year’s Day. Our family had a holly jolly time when we experienced it!

Trader's hut on the "Jingle Cruise", with Christmas tree on the porch and holiday lights wrapped around the railings.

In 2015, the Jungle Navigation Co. LTD Skipper Canteen restaurant opened in Adventureland further expanding the Jungle Cruise’s mythology. Here, the skippers are your servers, and the menu reflects flavors from all the parts of the world featured in the Jungle Cruise, as well as a few of the puns! How a-boat that?

3. You visit four rivers until you “Congo” no further.

As you probably know, the ride is an outdoor boat tour which Disney describes as, “a 10- minute, 10,000-mile journey that you won’t soon forget!” During your ride, you’ll glide through the Amazon in South America, the African Congo, the Egyptian Nile, and the east Asian Mekong River.

Your skipper pilots you safely through “the world’s most treacherous waters,” all the while delivering a pun-filled narration. You’ll come across scene after scene of audio-animatronic wildlife, visit a mysterious temple, and – pay attention here – the eighth wonder of the world! As you pass under the waterfall (insert famous “backside of water” joke here) and a couple of spraying fountains, you may get a little … damp.

An animatronic elephant sits on a rock, spraying water from his trunk as water cascades down the rocks in the background.

4. Waiting can be an “oar-deal,” but you won’t get seasick.

No need to pack your Dramamine; the Jungle Cruise is a gentle, slow-moving boat ride. While there’s a lot of water involved, the depth is never much greater than three feet. We think it’s the perfect family attraction as it truly offers something for everybody. As such, the Jungle Cruise has retained its status as a must-do ride when visiting WDW. Lines can get really long and standby wait times often exceed 60 minutes, especially during the middle of the day.

While the main part of the queue is covered, it’s not enclosed, and those waiting in the extended queue may be exposed to the elements. The mid-day sun can become an issue for some. If you can’t ride Jungle Cruise when Adventureland opens or near closing time, visit a bathroom before you get in line and bring along a refreshing beverage and the SPF of your choice.

A chalkboard sign in the queue features the "Crew Mess" lunch menu, with entrees such as Fricasse of Giant Stag Beetle, all described as "chicken-esque" or "has a chicken flavor"

Once under cover, you’ll quickly see that the queue itself is one of the most richly themed at WDW. Be sure to read all the signage and take note of all the props. You’ll discover that the visual humor and pun-tastic narration of the Cruise begins before you even board the boat! As they say, “getting there is half the pun” – er, I mean “fun.”

5. The nuts and bolts.

You’ll board your exciting ride from the dock in Adventureland at the Magic Kingdom. It’s next to the Swiss Family Treehouse and across from The Magic Carpets of Aladdin. Lightning Lanes are available for this ride through Genie+ which can help you avoid the long lines and cut down on your wait.

While the Jungle Cruise boats are covered, certain weather conditions may result in the attraction’s closure.

An empty jungle cruise boat, the Zamesi Zelda, sits even with the dock, waiting for passengers

Each Jungle Cruise boat accommodates around 30 guests. To board, guests must step over a moderate-height wall onto a bench and then down a moderate step. Cast Members usually lend a hand to help guests step from the dock and into the boat, as well as to disembark. Guests may remain in a wheelchair/ECV.

Bench seats line the interior perimeter of the boat with some seating provided in the middle. There are no safety restraints due to the slow-moving nature of these ride vehicles. There are no health and safety advisories for the Jungle Cruise and there is no height requirement to ride.

The bottom line.

The Jungle Cruise is the perfect ride for those who want a classic Disney attraction laced with puns that make even Dad groan. Some say it’s even better at night. Whenever you ride, the Jungle crews will ensure your Jungle Cruise is simply “pun-derful.”

I love this attraction at night. I’ve taken it I don’t know how many times but now that I’ve started taking it at night I love it again. Also very handy because getting a lightning lane later in the evening means you can turn a few others before you book it with genie+

Great suggestion! and yes, the nighttime trip is LOTS of fun! Thanks for sharing!

Love Albert AWOL’s background music!

After seeing your comment, I did a little online “research” and read that Albert was replaced by his sister, Skipper Missy, at WDW. But to be totally honest, I have to admit that this past December I don’t even remember hearing ANYTHING as we waited in line. Anybody have any recent info?

It is helpful to know that this attraction, despite its age, remains quite popular. I recommend it and would suggest further that riders spring for Genie+ Lightning Lanes to book a ride time and avoid a surprisingly long wait.

Thanks for your suggestion. Our last visit, we were in line as the wait times went from 30 to 40 and finally 60 minutes. We were surprised, indeed!

15 Facts About Disney's Jungle Cruise

By stacy conradt | may 9, 2018.

Flicrk // Thomas Hawk // CC BY-NC 2.0

Everyone turn around and wave goodbye to the folks back on the dock … they may never see you again. But then again, you probably never saw them before, either. Here are 15 facts about Disney's Jungle Cruise.

1. WHEN IT DEBUTED, IT WAS A VERY SERIOUS TRIP THROUGH EXOTIC LOCATIONS.

For the first few years, the Jungle Cruise was more of a documentary-style attraction. All of the funny scenes and jokes were added years later—and thank goodness. The ridiculously bad jokes delivered with perfect apathy (“And now, we’re approaching beautiful Schweitzer Falls, named after the famous African explorer, Dr. Albert Falls.”) are the best part of the ride for many people.

2. WALT DISNEY WANTED TO INCORPORATE LIVE ANIMALS.

is disney jungle cruise on a track

When the ride was still in development, Walt Disney wanted to use live animals. When a zoologist explained that many of the animals were nocturnal, which would leave daytime guests gazing at catnapping creatures, Walt opted for creatures he could control. For a time, however, the ride queue did feature live alligators.

3. DISNEY DROVE A CAR THROUGH THE DRY "RIVERBEDS" TO PROMOTE THE RIDE.

As Disneyland was being constructed, Walt often gave TV viewers a preview of what was being built. Before the Jungle Cruise had water, he drove a Nash Rambler (one of the show’s sponsors) through the “riverbeds” to show off Schweitzer Falls and the crude mechanics of the animals.

4. IT'S THE RIDE THAT LED DISNEY TO VIEW HIS PARKS AS NEVER BEING COMPLETE.

It may be apocryphal, but the story goes like this : Walt was strolling through Disneyland when he heard a young boy asking his mom to take the eight-minute trip through the jungle. Not even slowing her stride, the mother replied something to the effect of, “No, we did that last time we were here.” Hearing that, Walt decided he had to keep changing and improving things in order to keep guests coming back.

5. SOME JUNGLE CRUISE SKIPPERS HAVE GONE ON TO BIGGER AND BETTER THINGS.

Famous wisecracking skippers include Kevin Costner and Ron Ziegler (Richard Nixon's press secretary).

6. MOST OF THE "EXOTIC" JUNGLE PLANTS AREN'T EXOTIC AT ALL.

is disney jungle cruise on a track

How do you get the tropical aesthetic provided by exotic plants without shelling out the big bucks for shipping and maintaining them? Just use Disney’s tactic: “ plant ” an orange tree upside down and let vines grow and twine around the exposed roots.

7. THE WATER IS CLEANER THAN IT LOOKS.

That murky water passengers sail through is dyed brown, dark green, or muddy blue. The coloring serves two purposes: It provides a more realistic portrayal of swampy waters, of course, but it also conceals the fact that the cruise ships are on a track in a pool that’s less than four feet deep in most areas.

8. DISNEY WAS THRIFTY WHEN IT CAME TO THE AIRPLANE USED IN THE RIDE.

If you pony up the cash for a Lockheed Model 12 Electra Junior airplane, you might as well get your money’s worth, right? Disney used the back half for the scene near the Jungle Cruise's hippo pool at the Magic Kingdom, and the front half for the Casablanca scene in "The Great Movie Ride" at Hollywood Studios.

9. SOME OF THE SPECIAL EFFECTS ARE PRETTY LOW-TECH.

You might think that getting the animals’ eyes to glow as you make your way through the Asian temple is a high-tech trick, but it’s really just the opposite. Their eyes are really just marbles painted with a reflective coating.

10. LOOK FOR INSIDE JOKES HIDDEN IN THE QUEUE.

At the Magic Kingdom at Disney World, a pair of crates sits bundled with some barrels as if they’re cargo ready to be shipped. A close look at the addresses reveals that one is going to “Thomas Kirk, Esq., M. Jones, Cartographers Ltd. Field Office, Island of Bora Danno.” The other is addressed to “Kenneth Annakin, Director of Imports, Wyss Supply Company, Colony of New Guinea.”

This is a reference to the Disney movie Swiss Family Robinson . Tommy Kirk played Ernst Robinson in the 1960 film, then went on to play the title character in the 1964 movie The Misadventures of Merlin Jones. James MacArthur, the actor who played Fritz Robinson, later played Danny Williams—you know, “Book ‘em, Danno” on Hawaii Five-O. So that’s the first crate explained. The second crate refers to Ken Annakin, the director of Swiss Family Robinson, and “Wyss Supply” is a little wink to the author of the original book, Johann Wyss.

11. A JUNGLE CRUISE MOVIE STARRING TOM HANKS AND TIM ALLEN WAS PLANNED, AND SCRAPPED.

Buzz and Woody meet Jumanji ? It almost happened. Entertainment Weekly  first reported on a Jungle Cruise movie starring Tom Hanks and Tim Allen back in 2011, which clearly never came to be. But that doesn't mean that a movie isn't happening: Though no release date has been set, Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson, Emily Blunt, and Jesse Plemons have all signed on for starring roles in the film.

12. ONE OF THE BOATS ACTUALLY SANK.

is disney jungle cruise on a track

Perhaps its name was prophetic, because “Sankuru Sadie” at the Magic Kingdom did, in fact, sink. In 2004, the boat took on more water than it could hold and went under—though, given how shallow most of the water is, it probably didn’t go far. The boat was refurbished and put back into rotation.

13. THERE USED TO BE A KATHARINE HEPBURN CAMEO.

The ride was largely inspired by the movie The African Queen, starring Humphrey Bogart and Katharine Hepburn. As a somewhat macabre homage to the film, the Florida Jungle Cruise once featured a little nod to Hepburn—literally. Near the end of the ride, Trader Sam the headhunter cheerily holds up a couple of shrunken heads. “Trader Sam has a deal for you. Two of his heads for one of yours,” is how the joke typically goes. Riders who looked closely would have noticed that one of Sam’s shrunken heads looked an awful lot like Hepburn.

14. ED SULLIVAN RODE THE JUNGLE CRUISE IN A 1959 KODAK COMMERCIAL.

If you want to see what the Jungle Cruise looked like just a few years after Disneyland’s opening day, check out this commercial for Kodak’s innovative new Brownie camera, available for just $74.50!

15. DISNEYLAND'S JUNGLE CRUISE FEATURES A PALM THAT PRE-DATES THE PARK.

Located just outside the entrance of the Jungle Cruise in California is a large palm tree. Referred to as “the Dominguez Palm,” this bit of vegetation has been around way longer than Mickey has been; it dates back to 1896. It’s named after the family who lived there before the land became a theme park. The rancher who sold the land to Disney requested that this particular tree be spared, and Disney obliged, moving all 15 tons of tree from the parking lot area to Adventureland.

Jungle Cruise entry

Jungle Cruise... the animatronic heavy, family-friendly boat ride you can experience while enjoying cheesy jokes told by your personal skipper has become a staple in Disney parks worldwide. While hundreds of guests board the boats every day, very few know the history behind the show scenes and animals features on the ride, and even fewer know just how many changes the ride's layout has gone through since its introduction.

During its planning stages, Jungle Cruise intended to make use of live animals along the river, but Walt Disney and his imagineers were persuaded to use animatronics after being informed that most of the animals would be shy and reclusive during most of the day.

Jungle Cruise, Kayleigh Igou

Because of this, the original concept for Jungle Cruise was reworked to feature a number of animal animatronics. When the ride officially opened in Disneyland in 1955, Jungle Cruise was short and its cheesy jokes favored a more serious and adventure-driven approach. After boarding their boat, guests would first pass by an abandoned Cambodian shrine, overgrown with foliage and currently inhabited by a gang of monkeys.

The monkeys play around the large mossy stones and fight over bananas, but after less than a year of operation, the monkeys were removed from the attraction and never returned. Guests would also encounter giraffes, elephants, lions feasting on a zebra, alligators, and rampaging hippos that the skipper would shoot a prop pistol at in hopes that they would back down. Toward the end of the ride, guests would experience the most controversial aspect of the ride--a hut owned by indigenous headhunters.

During the next few years of operation, Jungle Cruise experienced its first big update, hoping to entice some visitors to ride again to witness the new show scenes and animals. In addition to some new animals, the indigenous hut was expanded into a full village of animatronics, including the addition of the now iconic Trader Sam.

Around this time, the boat house and attraction entrance were demolished and rebuilt with a new theme after the lookout tower built atop the boat house was no longer in service. It was believed around this time that the foliage in the jungle around the river had grown too tall and too dense for any of the lookouts to see the boats from the tower.

Disneyland Jungle Cruise boats

During the early 60s, Jungle Cruise saw another large expansion with an overhaul of the original Cambodian shrine and a new scene featuring a handful of Indian elephants playing and bathing in the river. The expansion's second half changed the lion pride eating a zebra to a larger scene with more lions and more zebra pieces scattered about. Another addition to the show scenes was a rhino standing guard at the base of a pillar while tourists and explorers took refuge just out of range of the rhino's sharp horn. A pack of hyenas watched from nearby, laughing at the explorers' predicament.

The attraction proved to be so successful that Walt Disney World adopted its own version. This second incarnation of the classic ride featured more show scenes and expanded areas, including another reimagined temple and a group of adorable large frogs. Unfortunately these frogs did not make it long into the attraction's history before being removed for being "too cartoony" for the Cruise.

The second incarnation's success encouraged the original to implement some changes of its own. Scenes were added in Disneyland's version where guests would pass by a gorilla facing off against an angry alligator, and a group of alligators snapping at a brave hornbill on a branch just out of reach. Around this time, some of the animals were shuffled and relocated to new areas. The lions were moved to a proper den, and a tiger took up residence within the shrine.

Both Tokyo and Hong Kong introduced their own versions to their respective rosters and combined aspects from both the original and the Magic Kingdom's versions, as well as adding their own unique scenes and twists. For around twenty years, little changed on the Cruises. A few outdated animatronics that were beginning to show their age were occasionally replaced with new animals, but no scene additions were made for quite a long time.

Elephants splashing in the river

In 1993, the attraction's entrance was demolished and updated to fit the aesthetic of the new neighboring Indiana Jones attraction. Because of the addition of this new ride, Jungle Cruise's river was slightly shortened to make room. The hornbill and alligators scene was removed to adapt to this change. The boats were also changed to fit the surroundings and give them more of a jungle boat theme. In 2001, the longtime tradition of skippers firing guns at charging hippos was removed permanently, and four years later, the campsite was changed to add some gorillas playing around with the supplies. The lions were moved from their original spots and into a new expanded location, a group of piranhas chased the boat in a new scene, and a baby elephant was added near the river.

Aside from a few minor changes here and there, Jungle Cruise has not received a major update in several years. The History and Evolution of the Disney’s Jungle Cruise

is disney jungle cruise on a track

Since it opened in Disneyland Park in July of 1955, Jungle Cruise has become one of the most iconic attractions in Disney’s theme park catalogue. Everything from the distinctive ride vehicles, comical tableaus, animatronic animals, and even the purposely over-the-top skipper spiel have become iconic elements of the Disney theme park experience, explaining why the Jungle Cruise has been cloned to nearly every Disney resort around the world.

is disney jungle cruise on a track

However, despite its beloved stature, the attraction has met its fair share of controversy over the years, which has led to numerous changes, including a major refurbishment in 2021 .

To analyze this attraction’s controversial history, we must first look at its origins, years before Disneyland was constructed.

The origins.

The origins of the Jungle Cruise can be traced back to the late 1940s, when Walt Disney Pictures began production on their True-Life Adventures series. Beginning with Seal Island in 1948, these somewhat staged wildlife documentaries followed various groups of animals in their natural habitats. The series was so successful with movie-goers and critics that it eventually evolved from two-reel shorts to full-length documentary films that quickly became a cornerstone of Walt Disney Studios.

is disney jungle cruise on a track

Guests would view the animals from skipper-guided ride-vehicles modeled after the titular boat from the 1951 hit film The African Queen, while traveling through a jungle designed by Disneyland landscape extraordinaire Bill Evans.

Welcome to the Jungle

Jungle Cruise opened with the rest of Disneyland on July 17, 1955. However, a modern guest would be hard-pressed to recognize much of the attraction. Sure they would be familiar with Goff’s general concept, and if they squinted they could imagine how the rather light jungle Evans planted would grow into the lush greenery seen today, but many iconic elements of the attraction would be absent. There was no ad-libbed humor from the skippers, who played the entire experience straight. In fact, there was no humor period.

is disney jungle cruise on a track

The Jungle Cruise, like Disneyland overall, was a massive success upon its opening, quickly becoming an integral part of American pop culture. However, as the park’s first decade came to a close, Walt Disney felt his park needed some new blood. According to legend, he once overheard a child ask his mother to ride the Jungle Cruise and was aghast when the mother responded that they’d ridden it last time and didn’t need to again. Whether this story is apocryphal or not, in the early 1960s Walt brought over animator Marc Davis from the Studios to “plus up” some of Disneyland’s attractions.

is disney jungle cruise on a track

One of the first attractions Davis – who would go on to become one of the company’s most influential Imagineers – worked on was Jungle Cruise. A visual comedian by nature, Davis decided to liven up the attraction by adding the playful elephant pool and comical trapped safari sequences.

These comedic elements in-turn influenced the ride’s skipper narration, which became more and more comical over the years. Davis’ changes led to the attraction becoming even more popular.

Disney World’s Jungle Cruise

The Jungle Cruise’s status as one of Disney’s premier attractions was further solidified when a version of the ride opened with Walt Disney World and Magic Kingdom in 1971.

is disney jungle cruise on a track

The Orlando version of the ride was similar to its Anaheim counterpart, though not a direct clone, and served the same purpose as the anchor attraction of the park’s Adventureland section.

Jungle Cruise International

A near-direct clone of the Magic Kingdom version of the attraction opened with Tokyo Disneyland in 1983, but when Disneyland Paris, then known as EuroDisney, opened in 1992, the park became the first “castle park” not to feature a Jungle Cruise on opening day. This was due partially to the cold French climate not being hospitable to water rides and partially because there were several knockoff Jungle Cruises already built at various French amusement parks.

Disneyland Levels Up

While these alternate versions of the Jungle Cruise were being built around the world, the Disneyland original continued to be “plussed” over the years. Throughout the 1960s and 70s, various new animals and show-scenes were added to the attraction. The biggest changes up to that point came in 1994, when the attraction was rerouted and shortened to make room for the then-upcoming Indiana Jones Adventure attraction. In addition, the ride (and the entirety of Adventureland) were rethemed to be set in the 1930s to tie into Indy.

is disney jungle cruise on a track

While these changes were substantial, they were nothing compared to the original plans , which were going to see a portion of the Jungle Cruise take place inside the Indiana Jones show building, as part of a plan to build a massive complex that would house four attractions.

Holiday Overlays

Following these mid-90s refurbishments, the Jungle Cruise continued to be one of Disney’s marquee attractions. As a testament to said importance, in 2013, both American versions of the attraction were given a holiday overlay and temporarily renamed The Jingle Cruise.

is disney jungle cruise on a track

The overlay was so successful that it was greatly expanded for 2014, and remained in both parks through 2016. For reasons unknown, Disneyland dropped The Jingle Cruise from its Holiday offerings in 2017, though the overlay remains a Magic Kingdom staple to this day.

Controversy in the Jungle

Despite Jungle Cruise’s ongoing popularity, in recent decades the attraction has become controversial due to its purported negative depictions of native people, specifically the “headhunter” party as well as the Trader Sam “head salesman” character.

is disney jungle cruise on a track

In January 2021,  Disney announced that it would be making significant story changes to the Jungle Cruise at both Disneyland and Walt Disney World to alleviate these issues. Carmen Smith, creative development and inclusion strategies executive at Walt Disney Imagineering, explained the changes in a statement to the Los Angeles Times , saying:

As Imagineers, it is our responsibility to ensure experiences we create and stories we share reflect the voices and perspectives of the world around us. With Jungle Cruise, we’re bringing to life more of what people love – the humor and wit of our incredible skippers — while making needed updates.

Disney Chief Executive Bob Iger added , “The exciting changes we’re making to one of Disney’s most popular classic attractions, Jungle Cruise, reflect our commitment to creating unparalleled experiences that reflect, not only the best in storytelling, but also the values and rich diversity of our world.”

is disney jungle cruise on a track

As part of these announcements, Disney made it clear that these changes to the attraction were not going to be related to the upcoming film based on the attraction.

is disney jungle cruise on a track

Said film, simply titled Jungle Cruise , was released in July of 2021. The film starred Dwayne Johnson, Emily Blunt, Édgar Ramírez, Jack Whitehall, Jesse Plemons, and Paul Giamatti and was directed by Jaume Collet-Serra. It was such a hit, a sequel is already in the works.

How do you feel about the upcoming changes to the Jungle Cruise? Do you agree that they’ve been years in the making? Beyond that, how do you feel about the attraction overall? Let us know in the comments below.

Behind the Scenes: Do They Drive the Boats at Jungle Cruise?

Instead, the boats are propelled along the predetermined track by an underwater system, giving the illusion that the skippers are skillfully navigating through the dense foliage and treacherous waters. This hidden mechanism ensures the safety of both the guests and the skippers while adding to the magical and immersive experience of the Jungle Cruise. Behind the scenes, a team of technicians and engineers work tirelessly to maintain and operate this intricate system, ensuring that every boat glides smoothly along it’s designated route. While the skippers may not have direct control over the steering, their charismatic commentary and comedic timing are what truly bring the Jungle Cruise to life. So, next time you embark on this classic Disney adventure, remember that while the skippers may not be physically steering the boats, their wit and charm are steering you towards a memorable and entertaining journey through the wilds of the jungle.

How Many Boats Are in Jungle Cruise Ride?

When it comes to the iconic Jungle Cruise ride at Disney theme parks, one question that often arises is how many boats are actually in operation. Well, the answer may surprise you. There are a total of 15 Jungle Cruise boats, each with it’s own unique name and character. These boats play a vital role in bringing the jungle-themed adventure to life for visitors from all around the world.

Among the fleet of Jungle Cruise boats are Amazon Annie, Bomokandi Bertha, Congo Connie, Ganges Gertie, Irawaddy Irma, Kwango Kate, Mongala Millie, Nile Nellie, Orinoco Ida, Sankuru Sadie, Senegal Sal, Ucayali Lolly, Volta Val, Wamba Wanda, and Zambezi Zelda. These names not only help distinguish each boat, but they also add an extra layer of whimsy and fun to the experience.

The design of these boats is carefully crafted to resemble the steam-powered riverboats that were commonly used in the early 20th century. From their authentic paddlewheel propulsion to their intricate detailing, each boat is a true work of art. And while they may look vintage, they’re actually modern vessels equipped with the latest technology to ensure a smooth and safe ride for guests.

The Jungle Cruise boats are operated by highly trained Disney Cast Members who’re responsible for steering the course and delivering the hilarious and pun-filled script that’s become synonymous with the ride. These skilled skippers are masters of improvisation and are known for their comedic timing, making sure that every trip on the Jungle Cruise is a memorable one.

Behind the scenes, the Jungle Cruise boats undergo regular maintenance and inspections to keep them in top condition. From routine cleaning to mechanical repairs, Disney takes pride in maintaining the authenticity and quality of these beloved attractions. So the next time you embark on a Jungle Cruise adventure, take a moment to appreciate the craftsmanship and dedication that goes into bringing this classic attraction to life.

The Jungle Cruise boats, known for their whimsical and adventurous journeys, are powered by 4-cylinder Chevrolet engines. These engines provide the necessary propulsion for the 27-foot long boats, allowing them to reach a top speed of 3.2 feet per second. Now, let’s delve into the fascinating details and history behind these iconic vessels.

What Engines Are in the Jungle Cruise Boats?

The captivating and iconic Jungle Cruise attraction at Disney theme parks has left guests in awe for decades. As visitors embark on a delightful journey through exotic landscapes, one question often arises: What engines power these magnificent boats? The answer lies in the heart of these vessels, as the Jungle Cruise boats are equipped with 4-cylinder Chevrolet engines.

These boats, measuring 27 feet in length, may not be the fastest vessels on water, but they glide seamlessly through the tranquil jungle-inspired rivers at a top speed of 3.2 feet per second. The choice of a 4-cylinder Chevrolet engine may seem modest, but it perfectly aligns with the purpose of the attraction – providing a whimsical and immersive experience rather than a high-speed thrill ride.

The selection of a Chevrolet engine for these boats speaks to the longevity and reliability of the brand. Chevrolet has a rich history of producing engines that stand the test of time, ensuring that the beloved Jungle Cruise boats can charm and entertain guests for years to come. These engines offer the necessary power and performance to navigate the waterways with ease, while maintaining the enchanting atmosphere of the attraction.

Behind the scenes, the use of these engines ensures that the Jungle Cruise boats remain a crowd-favorite. Professionals meticulously maintain and service the engines, ensuring that they run smoothly and reliably. This level of dedication guarantees that guests can embark on their Jungle Cruise adventure without worry, immersing themselves in the whimsical and humorous tales shared by the skilled skippers.

The choice of a 4-cylinder engine also helps minimize the noise produced by the boats, allowing guests to fully engage with the immersive experience. The quiet hum of the Chevrolet engine blends harmoniously with the jungle sounds and realistic audio effects, seamlessly blending fantasy with reality. This attention to detail is a testament to the care and consideration put into creating a truly magical experience for every guest.

As guests embark on their adventure, they can be assured that these boats, driven by skilled skippers and propelled by Chevrolet engines, will continue to transport them to a world of wonder and laughter for years to come.

The Design and Construction of the Jungle Cruise Boats

The Jungle Cruise boats are carefully designed and constructed to provide an immersive and safe experience for passengers. They’re built to resemble early 20th-century expedition boats and are equipped with various mechanical and visual effects to enhance the ride. The boats are engineered to navigate through the dense jungle environment, featuring a shallow draft and a durable hull. Skilled artisans and engineers carefully craft each boat to ensure they’re both aesthetically pleasing and structurally sound. The construction process involves selecting high-quality materials and utilizing advanced techniques to ensure the boats can withstand the rigors of the water. Overall, the design and construction of these boats play a vital role in creating the magical experience of the Jungle Cruise.

Jungle Cruise is more than just a ride – it’s an immersive adventure into the heart of a lush and vibrant jungle. Embark on a scenic journey, gliding through picturesque waterways that bring to life the wonders of nature. From dense forests to exotic wildlife, this classic attraction transports guests to a realm where realism meets fantasy. Originally debuting at Disneyland, Jungle Cruise remains a beloved icon of adventure and discovery for all who set sail on it’s captivating waters.

Jungle Cruise at Disneyland vs. Walt Disney World: Which Version is Better?

by Jenn Marrazzo | Oct 17, 2023 | Disneyland , Disneyland Parks , Magic Kingdom , WDW Blog

Jungle Cruise at Disneyland vs Disney World

What makes the Jungle Cruise at Disneyland different from the version at Walt Disney World? We’re breaking both attractions down below.

Disneyland Park in Anaheim may be the original Disney theme park, but Walt Disney World’s Magic Kingdom Park shares plenty of similarities with it – including some of the very same attractions! One of the most beloved Disney attractions that’s found at both Disneyland and Disney World is the Jungle Cruise. But do the two theme parks really offer different ride experiences? Or are both versions of the Jungle Cruise totally identical?

As an opening day attraction at both Disneyland Park in 1955 and Magic Kingdom Park in 1971, this popular, beloved ride has been entertaining Guests for decades. However, the experience varies depending on where you’re riding (and some people prefer one park’s version over the other!). Below, we’re comparing both the Jungle Cruise at Disneyland and the Jungle Cruise at Walt Disney World to determine which is the better attraction.

The history of the jungle cruise.

Believe it or not, the Jungle Cruise attraction we know and love today at both Disneyland and Disney World had an interesting origin story. Walt Disney Pictures produced a True-Life Adventures series in the late 1940s, which gave Walt himself the inspiration to add an “Adventureland” to Disneyland Park. The centerpiece of this Adventureland would be a “jungle river cruise.” Walt’s initial idea for this cruise was larger than life; he dreamed up the idea of populating the attraction’s landscape with real animals. But, due to logistics, that grand idea morphed into animated animals similar to audio-animatronics.

On July 17, 1955 – Disneyland’s opening day – the Jungle Cruise made its debut. The attraction was a huge success, and Guests loved the idea of a river cruise through a “realistic” jungle. 16 years later, Walt Disney World Resort opened and on October 1, 1971, the Jungle Cruise made its debut on the East Coast inside Magic Kingdom’s own Adventureland.

During the attraction’s long history, both versions at Disneyland and Disney World theme parks have seen updates and refurbishments. Over the years, new animals have been added, adjustments to the attraction’s storyline have been made to reflect cultural and social changes, and even seasonal overlays have been introduced.

In fact, the Jungle Cruise has even gone global! Disney theme parks in Hong Kong and Tokyo have their own versions of the attraction. Today, only two Disney parks in the world don’t have a Jungle Cruise: Disneyland Paris and Shanghai Disneyland .

What’s the jungle cruise like at disneyland vs. disney world.

Whether you’ve experienced both the Jungle Cruise at Disneyland and the Jungle Cruise at Disney World firsthand or you’re simply interested in which theme park offers the better, more exciting, or even punnier experience, here’s a look at what the two versions of the attraction share – and what’s different.

The Attraction Queue

The queues at both the Jungle Cruise in Walt Disney World Resort in Orlando, Florida and Disneyland Resort in Anaheim, California, are extremely similar. When you enter the queue at either location, you’ll be waiting outdoors (but there is some cover overhead). You’ll wind your way past areas decorated with pictures, maps, journals, and more all themed around explorations and river cruises through the jungle.

There is one big difference between the Jungle Cruise queues, though: At Disneyland, the queue features two stories and at Disney World, it’s all on a single floor.

The Ride Time

Both versions of the Jungle Cruise at Walt Disney World and Disneyland have almost identical ride times – the attraction lasts just under 10 minutes long, unless there’s a boat backup (which will then make the ride time longer).

Once you’ve boarded your boat and met your skipper on the Jungle Cruise at Disneyland or Disney World, you’ll notice a big difference: The attraction story differs depending on the theme park. You’ll also tour the jungles of the world in a different order, which leads to an overall different ride experience.

At Disney World’s Magic Kingdom, the Jungle Cruise starts inside a Cambodian temple . Guests onboard enter the temple, where they’ll spot a Bengal tiger, cobra, and monkey. Disneyland’s version of the Jungle Cruise doesn’t have an indoor temple. Instead, the ride begins by taking Guests past a series of Cambodian ruins. As a result, the ride’s scenes are in a different order at each park, leading to a bit of a mixed-up or different story order. and everything just seems a bit more elaborate. You feel more isolated on the Walt Disney World attraction, which makes the experience seem more realistic.

Additionally, while both Disneyland’s Jungle Cruise and Disney World’s Jungle Cruise take Guests under Schweitzer Falls , the “Backside of Water” does look different at each park. At Magic Kingdom in Disney World, the falls are a larger and more impressive feature. With more space and more flair, the Jungle Cruise at Disney World feels more elaborate overall – and there’s more of a “wow” factor. Guests also feel more isolated on this version of the attraction, which makes the experience seem more realistic.

The Theme Park Location

At both Walt Disney World Resort in Orlando, Florida and Disneyland Resort in Anaheim, California, the Jungle Cruise is located in Adventureland . In both theme parks, this is where you’ll also find the Enchanted Tiki Room and Pirates of the Caribbean . The area is home to attractions and food that increase a sense of wonder and adventure. While the lands may be laid out differently, and feature slightly different theming, they’re quite similar.

Which Version of the Jungle Cruise is Better, Disneyland’s or Disney World’s?

Trying to decide whether the Jungle Cruise at Disneyland is better than the Jungle Cruise at Disney World – or vice – is no easy feat!  While the attractions are fairly similar in queue design, ride time and location, they do differ in their execution of the story. We think you really have to try each iteration of the Jungle Cruise out for yourself to get a sense of the look, feel, and overall story told through the Disneyland and Disney World versions. .

But, based on our experience riding both versions of this classic attraction, our pick for the superior version does go to the Jungle Cruise at Walt Disney World. It’s the subtle differences from the original at Disneyland that make the Magic Kingdom version even better, like the bigger and bolder theming. However, you’ll have to experience both for yourself to truly be able to compare and contrast them!

T he launch of Disney Cruise Line in 1998 was a game changer for family cruises. Now in its third decade of operation, Disney Cruise Line consistently tops the list of best cruise lines for families. And its newest ship (for now), Disney Wish , is unquestionably one of the best cruise ships for kids ever made. But Disney isn't the only major player in the family cruising space.

A host of other cruise lines, including Carnival Cruises , Princess , Norwegian , MSC , and Royal Caribbean , have helped usher in a new era of family vacations on cruise ships with amenities like kids clubs, water parks, stage shows, theatrical dining experiences, reduced fares for young children, and even kids sail free deals . And because the best cruise ships for kids are also great for grownups , you have plenty of options when it comes to the best family cruises.

NO HIDDEN FEES: 7 best all-inclusive cruise lines in the world

Start the day smarter. Get all the news you need in your inbox each morning.

1. Disney Wish

Disney Cruise Line

The sheer volume of onboard entertainment options for families on Disney Cruise Line's newest ship, Disney Wish , takes things to a whole new level. From action-packed dinner-and-a-show experiences like Worlds of Marvel and Arendelle: A Frozen Dining Adventure to the Star Wars: Hyperspace Lounge , and Incredibles-themed inflatable obstacle course , you'll never run out of things to do.

BIG SAVINGS: Kids sail free: 7 cruise lines with kids cruise free deals this year

Sailings on the Disney Wish also include a stop at Disney’s private island, Castaway Cay , which is always a highlight of any family cruise. Castaway Cay’s family beach is a great place for swimming, and you can rent bikes, kayaks, and snorkeling gear to see colorful tropical fish and perhaps even a sea turtle munching on seagrass.

2. Disney Magic

While every ship in the Disney Cruise Line fleet has a claim to be among the best family cruises, the original DCL family cruise ship deserves a special mention: Disney Magic is the ship that launched Disney Cruise Line in 1998, and with DCL's constant improvements and upkeep, the ship doesn’t feel outdated at all. Pirates, princesses, superheroes, and a thrilling water slide with a three-story drop are just a few of the fun features that make this a kid-favorite ship on one of the best cruise lines for families. In 2013, Disney added the AquaDunk high-speed thrill slide and Marvel Avengers Academy kids club. In 2018, a Tangled dinner theater restaurant made its debut.

WATER WORLDS: 50 best cruise ship water parks for kids and tweens

As one of the smaller ships in the Disney Cruise Line fleet, Disney Magic can be a less overwhelming experience for younger kids and first-time cruisers, especially given the trend among family cruises to be bigger and louder with every new ship. (The fabulous Disney Wonder is similarly sized.) But there's more than one reason to consider a Disney Magic voyage in 2024. This year, the ship will be the first to sail to Disney Cruise Line’s newest private island destination, Lookout Cay at Lighthouse Point , in the Bahamas.

3. Disney Treasure

Making its debut in December 2024, Disney Cruise Line's sixth ship will be called Disney Treasure and it will be the ship for fans of the Disney theme parks. Venues inspired by classic attractions such as the Haunted Mansion, Jungle Cruise, and 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea are among the highlights to look forward to when the ship sets sail. The sister ship of Disney Wish will also have a high-tech Worlds of Marvel dinner show and a theater-in-the-round dining experience, this time themed to Pixar’s Coco.

CAPTAIN MICKEY: 7 best Disney cruises for families in 2024

Disney Treasure will also feature a brand-new original Broadway-style production called "Disney The Tale of Moana" in the Walt Disney Theatre. Other shows performed on board will include "Beauty and the Beast" and "Disney Seas the Adventure." Best of all, Disney Treasure will sail seven-night itineraries to both the Eastern Caribbean and Western Caribbean. That means you can enjoy two distinct dinner shows in the Worlds of Marvel and Plaza de Coco restaurants, and all of the Broadway-style shows on stage during one family cruise.

4. Icon of the Seas

Royal Caribbean

A brand-new class of ship is heading to North America in 2024, and it starts with Royal Caribbean's Icon of the Seas in January. Among the many firsts for Icon of the Seas is the AquaDome, the largest glass and steel structure on any cruise ship, seven pools, six record-breaking waterslides, eight separate neighborhoods, 40 ways to drink and dine, four stages, and a three-level ultimate family townhouse. The innovative AquaDome is a peaceful oasis during the day and a vibrant hotspot at night with a 55-foot-tall water curtain and AquaTheater that debuts performances with divers, skateboarders, and robots.

FAMILY CRUISES: 5 best cruise ships to entertain your teen

Thrill-seekers will love Category 6, the largest waterpark at sea with six waterslides. There's also the Crown’s Edge, which is part skywalk, part ropes course, and 100 percent thrill ride where you can dangle 154 feet above the ocean. And, of course, you'll also find the Royal Caribbean staple FlowRider surf simulator and the Lost Dunes mini golf course. Those looking to take it easy should head to Chill Island, which features four pools spread over three decks with sweeping ocean views.

Fans of Royal Caribbean will enjoy the Royal Promenade with 15 restaurants, bars, and lounges; Central Park's open-air neighborhood filled with live plants and trees; and Surfside, the first neighborhood designed specifically for young families. The ship's seven-night Eastern and Western Caribbean family cruises all stop at Perfect Day at CocoCay , the line’s award-winning private island. Families will find an array of activities on Perfect Day at CocoCay, such as its beaches and freshwater pool (included) and an expansive water park and zip line (available for an extra charge).

5. Wonder of the Seas

Royal Caribbean's Oasis-class ships debuted in early 2022 and instantly ignited buzz that they might be the most kid-friendly cruise ships in the entire world. At 1,188 feet long and 18 decks tall, there's plenty of room for families to spread out and find entertainment onboard the Wonder of the Seas . Two dedicated private teen spaces onboard make vacationing with teenagers a little easier. In fact, teens aged 16 and up can even enjoy a massive teens-only hot tub that literally protrudes over the edge of the ship on Wonder of the Seas' deck 15.

SCENIC VOYAGES: Everything you need to know about river cruises in the USA

Grade school kids and even the littlest ones have it pretty great, too. For big kids, there’s an enormous multiple-deck play area called Wonder Playscape . For the youngest passengers, there's the Adventure Ocean play area full of soft toys and games for toddlers. And a playground with climbing equipment gives them a space to work off their energy. Wonder of the Seas also has the most amazing family suites around. They come complete with two levels of space, an in-suite slide, table tennis, and plenty of room for the whole family.

6. Oasis of the Seas

When it launched in 2009, Royal Caribbean’s Oasis of the Seas was the largest ship in the world, accommodating more than 5,500 passengers per voyage and cementing the line's place among the best cruise lines for families. After a reimagining 10 years later, Oasis of the Seas is still a popular option for family cruises in 2024 with its Caribbean-inspired pool deck, rock climbing walls, and Perfect Storm trio of multistory waterslides. Among the many reasons that make Royal Caribbean one of the best cruise lines for families is that its Symphony of the Seas builds upon the strengths of the line’s other Oasis Class ships.

7. Norwegian Viva

Norwegian Cruise Line

What makes Norwegian one of the best cruise lines for families? For one thing, you’ll never hear "I’m bored" from kids. And with its three-story race track, two escape rooms, The Rush and The Drop dry slides, The Wave waterslide, immersive virtual reality games, Topgolf simulator, mini golf, waterpark, splash ground, and kids’ clubs, your family’s biggest problem on the Norwegian Viva might just be deciding how to balance all the activities with quiet relaxation.

GO ALL IN: These 6 cruise lines offer the best themed cruises

The Norwegian Viva arrived in North America in December 2023 and offers Caribbean cruises from San Juan, Puerto Rico, in early 2024 before heading to Europe through November. The ship's Observation Lounge has panoramic 180-degree views to soak in the scenery or take Insta-worthy photos on Oceanwalk’s glass walkway. After playing the day away in port or on the ship, your family can enjoy dinner followed by a live performance of Beetlejuice: The Musical, based on the cult-classic Tim Burton film.

8. Carnival Panorama

Carnival Cruise Line

One of Carnival Cruise Line ’s newer ships, the Carnival Panorama 's many kid-friendly features have already made it one of the best cruises for families. The Panorama has supervised kids programs in three different age categories, a massive aqua park, the popular SkyRide aerial attraction, SkyCourse ropes course, and the first SkyZone trampoline park at sea.

DON'T OVERPAY: How to save money on a Carnival Cruise (with or without kids)

In addition, Carnival's exclusive partnership with Dr. Seuss Enterprises provides "Seuss at Sea" experiences on family cruise vacations, such as Dr. Seuss Bookville, Green Eggs and Ham Breakfast, and the Seuss-a-palooza Parade. Based in Los Angeles, Carnival Panorama sails week-long round-trip cruises to the Mexican Riviera in 2024.

9. Caribbean Princess

Princess Cruises

Made famous by the classic '80s TV series "The Love Boat," Princess Cruises now hosts more than two million passengers each year. Kid-friendly Caribbean Princess underwent an extensive renovation in 2017 that boosted its family offerings to include Camp Discovery Youth and Teen Center, HD Movies Under the Stars, and the Reef Family Splash Zone (the line's first splash zone at sea).

MOVIES UNDER THE STARS: 11 best outdoor movie screens for your backyard staycation

Caribbean Princess will be 20 years old in 2024, but another extensive drydock refurbishment in 2022 has kept the ship from feeling dated. Other features that earn the Caribbean Princess a spot on my list of best family cruises include its partnership with Discovery Inc. for "Discovery at SEA" activities, which feature Animal Planet and Discovery Channel programming, the Stanley the Bear experience, and JrChef@Sea cooking classes. In summer 2024, Caribbean Princess heads to Southampton for a series of European cruises before heading back to Florida.

10. MSC Meraviglia

Unless you're a hardcore cruise family, MSC Cruises might be the largest cruise line you’ve never heard of. One of the leading cruise lines in Europe, South America, and other parts of the world, MSC is working hard to get a foothold in North America by offering great deals on family cruises. These include kids ages 18 and under sailing free on select departures , and young children ages two and under always sailing free.

FIRST-TIMERS: 19 things to know before your first cruise with kids

Family-friendly MSC Meraviglia launched in 2017 and it features seven different kids’ clubs for children from babies to age 17. Teens have their own space with a cinema, game room, and live stage. And Meraviglia’s Polar Aquapark has three different waterslides, including a high-speed “champagne flute,” that easily make it one of the best cruises for families. Families can play together in the vast entertainment area that includes an MSC Formula One Racing Simulator, a full-sized bowling alley with two lanes, an interactive XD cinema, a flight simulator, and a video games arcade. There’s also a Sportsplex facility for basketball, tennis, squash, volleyball, pickleball, mini golf, and five-a-side soccer.

11. MSC Seascape

Disney Bought Jeffrey Epstein's Island to Build a Theme Park?

According to an article, the island would be used as a cruise stop., anna rascouët-paz, published april 12, 2024.

Labeled Satire

About this rating

On March 8, 2024, Mouse Trap News posted a TikTok video positing that Disney was buying the island of late sex offender Jeffrey Epstein to build a theme park:

The video had gained more than 183,000 views and 12,000 likes, as of this writing.

Along with the video, Mouse Trap News published an article with the same story:

The Walt Disney Company Buys Epstein Island The Walt Disney Company officially buys Epstein Island. They plan to build a new theme park there as well as make it a stop for their cruise ships. In fact, Disney purchased the island for a whopping $3 billion.

However, this item was not a factual recounting of real-life events. Mouse Trap News  describes its output as being humorous or satirical in nature, as follows:

Mouse Trap News is the world's best satire and parody site. We write fake stories about Disney Parks stuff. From Disney Park announcements to Disney Hotel and resort news to made-up Disney partnerships, you can be assured that anything you read here is not true, real, or accurate, but it is fun. So technically our slogan The Moused Trusted Name in Disney News isn't true, but we thought it was creative and funny, so we are running with it.

In June 2023, we  debunked a rumor that Disney Cruises made a stop on Epstein's island.

For background, here is why we sometimes write about satire/humor.
