Best Benagil cave tours and tips: How to visit in 2024

By: Author Sylvia

Posted on Last updated: February 20, 2024

The Benagil cave is probably the top tourist attraction along the impressive Algarve coast.

The coast is known for its rocky coastline with dramatic gold-colored cliffs.  The ocean has pounded these rock walls for decades and in doing so nature has created some unique sights.

Without a doubt, the Benagil cave is the pinnacle of that.

Until recently, as an experienced swimmer you could swim to the cave, but to manage the influx of tourists, the government has recently introduced some new measures. These measures are temporary and will be reevaluated at a later time.

We’ll provide more details on what’s changed later in this post. In any case, the bottom line is that you can currently only visit the cave with a guided tour .

That’s why we wrote this post to give you an overview of the best Benagil cave tours.

There are many different tours that take you to the Benagil caves ( The Grotte de Benagil as the Portuguese say ).

We have always opted for a regular boat tour.  If you visit the Algarve in summer you will find that the range of tours is much larger,  you can then also join a kayak tour or paddle to the cave on a SUP .

Which leads to the question: what is the best way to see the Benagil caves?

Below we share everything you need to know about the Benagil sea cave.

In a hurry? Here you will find the most important information about visiting the Benagil cave

  • The Benagil cave is not closed, you can still visit the Benagil cave all year round.
  • The easiest way to visit the Benagil is by boat.
  • There are both smaller and larger boats.
  • Zodiac boat trip departing from Vilamoura.
  • Zodiac Benagil cave tour departing from Portimão.
  • Zodiac Benagil sea cave tour from Lagos
  • Large boat Benagil sea cave tour from Vilamoura.
  • Algarve large boat tour to Benagil Cave from Portimão
  • An alternative is a cruise with this pirate ship You can enjoy the Algarve coastline from the pirate ship and then transfer on a smaller boat to see the Benagil cave.
  • To combine the Benagil Cave with one of the most beautiful beaches in the Algarve, check out this tour.
  • You can also visit the Benagil cave with a catamaran.
  • You can also kayak or paddle to the cave on a SUP. These tours are still going but follow a different itinerary now that it is no longer allowed to enter the cave.
  • The 7 Hanging Valleys Trail passes past the Benagil Cave but you will be disappointed if you hike this trail to see the cave. You can stand at the top of the cave, and try to see inside the hole at the top, but fences stop you from getting too close to the edge so that you can’t really see anything. (except a big hole)

The Best Benagil Cave Tours

This is our hand-picked selection of tours based on the tours we did and thousands of reviews from other travelers.

Since September it is no longer allowed to go into the cave by swimming, kayaking, or SUPs. The kayak and SUP tours below are still being conducted, but you will not get close to the Benagil cave. Currently, the best way to see the cave is with a boat trip.

The Top Benagil Cave Tours

How to Choose The Best Benagil Cave Tour

Above are our top picks but there are much more tours you can choose from. Here is a more extensive selection of tours including catamaran and pirate cruises.

We start with the boat tours and end with alternative tours such as kayak and SUPtours.

Benagil boat tour s

A Benagil boat tour remains the most popular way to visit the Benagil cave.

The main reason why boat tours are so popular is that they’re accessible to everyone, young and old. You will see a continuous stream of boats going to the cave during the high season.

Fortunately, it is all regulated. This way, there will never be several boats in the cave at the same time.

Tours leave from various locations and we have decided to group them by point of departure so that you can easily find one that leaves near your location.

Small boat tours vs a catamaran

  • Small boats usually offer shorter tours of 2 to 2.5 hours
  • On a small boat you have a better chance of entering the cave (but it is not guaranteed)
  • Smaller boats offer more of a thrill ride, catamarans offer a more relaxed/romantic experience but the ride can also be impetuous when it is windy.
  • See the FAQ below for a more detailed comparison.

Boat tours from Benagil beach

Benagil beach is located right next to the Benagil cave. This tour is the shortest tour available.

You may be tempted to go for the closest and cheapest option but other tours are preferred in our opinion.

If you leave from the beach of Benagil you only make a small trip where you really only visit the Benegal cave itself. Despite the fact that this is, of course, the highlight, you will miss the many other beautiful cliffs and caves.

The entire coast of the Algarve is a feast for the eyes.

There are a number of other reasons why we would advise against a trip from Benagil:

In high season this is by far the most popular option. As a result, there are long queues. Therefore, if you want to make the Benagil cave tour from Benagil beach, we advise you to get to the beach early.

These tours cannot be booked online.  You will have to join a possibly long queue for a short boat trip.

While other tours might be slightly cheaper they are really a better deal as you see more of the beautiful Algarve coast.

Read on to see some alternative tours leaving from other ports.

Portimão and Albufeira are by far the most popular cities in the Algarve to leave from.

The Port of Portimão

Portimão Benagil Cave tour

Benagil caves speed boat tour (with sunset option).

Rating: 4.9/5 (2500+ reviews) / Duration: 2 hours

We already did this zodiac boat trip with a departure from Portimão.

We sailed the amazing coastline between Portimão and Benagil Beach and saw a lot of caves.   We don’t remember exactly how many caves we passed but I still remember that we were surprised by the number.

In addition to the caves, we enjoyed the impressive view of the cliffs.

We took the tour around sunset, an hour that we absolutely recommend, as the setting sun then embraces everything with a beautiful golden glow.  The golden glow makes the steep cliffs even more beautiful.

The skipper also acted as a guide and he explained in an entertaining way what there was to see.

He pushed the pedal to the metal when we returned.  We flew over the water and we even did some donuts when he showed his steering skills, this to the great delight of all present.

We did this tour in January so we did not stop to swim.  The idea of swimming in water of 14 degrees Celcius does not really appeal to us…

It was a super nice trip.  We took loads of pictures of the impressive coastline and spend quite some time at the Benagil cave, which we saw from both entrances.

The return trip was fast. Provide a warm coat, gloves, and a hat during winter.

  • Less suitable if you have back problems

This tour gets excellent reviews, some travelers have even done the tour several times.

Thanks to the captain’s excellent sailing skills, you can still see the caves up close, even though this is a relatively large boat. Afterwards it is pleasant to relax on the beach with the barbecue.

Albufeira Benagil Cave tour

Benagil cave tour with a catamaran from albufeira.

Rating: 4.6/5 (950+ reviews) / Duration: 3 hours

A third alternative is to make this Benagil cave trip with a catamaran.

You then exchange the adrenaline that you experience with the speedboat for the comfort and peace of a slow-moving boat.

This tour lasts for 3 hours. From the Albufeira marina, you set sail westwards to the Benagil cave.

The boat is moving slowly so you have plenty of time to enjoy the picturesque scenery and you can take heaps of pictures.

If you’re lucky you might even see some dolphins.

You will stop for a swim if the weather allows it and the sea conditions are safe.

At the end of this beautiful tour, you’re offered a glass of champagne to toast this wonderful experience.

  • Very friendly crew.
  • You will get information in English, French, Spanish, and Portuguese.
  • You are offered a glass of champagne on the way back. Extra drinks can be bought with cash.
  • There is WiFi onboard.
  • Less suitable if you are pregnant.
  • Less suitable for people with back problems.
  • Not wheelchair accessible.

This Benagil trip is a completely different experience than the other boat tours we described above.

Romantics will almost certainly prefer this tour but if you are more adventurous, the aforementioned boat tours are more for you.

This catamaran tour might be better for you if you’re prone to seasickness.  A catamaran is usually less subject to the swells of the sea.  Speaking from experience, however, if you get seasick quickly, I would always take precautions and take something against seasickness.

This way you are sure that you will be able to enjoy this tour and the beautiful landscape.

The crew is very friendly and try their best to answer every question.

The catamaran will go inside the Benagil cave if it is safe to do so but it’s too big to enter the other caves.

  • Very friendly and informative guide.
  • A comfortable boat with individual seats
  • The trip from Vilamoura to Benagil takes about 1 hour so you don’t have that much time to spent at Benagil and other places along the way

This is a good option for a short and fun trip to Benagil from Vilamoura. You will get to see a long stretch of the beautiful coastline and the Benagil cave is the icing on the cake.

Swimming to Benagil cave

Since September it is no longer allowed to go into the cave by swimming, kayaking, or SUPs. Currently, the best way to see the cave is with a boat trip .

The Benagil cave lies only about 150-200 meters from the beach of Benagil.

So, in theory, it is easy to swim to it.

What makes it more difficult are the currents that can sometimes be treacherous.

You also have to take into account the water temperature. 20 degrees is not cold but a lot colder than the average pool where the temperature is usually around 26 degrees.

Those who count on warming up inside the cave will be disappointed.  Inside the cave, it is rather chilly, if you come out of the water hypothermic you will not be able to warm up there.

Good swimmers will be able to swim to the cave but don’t make this decision light-minded, it is not something we would recommend doing.

In July and August, the many boats create extra danger.

If you want to swim to the cave during these months it is best to do so early or late before the boats arrive.  Better yet is to do so in June or September when there are fewer tourist boats.

The water is still somewhere between 19 and 21 degrees in this period.

Be sure to check the tides in advance . When the tide is out, the beach in the cave is at its largest. When the tides rise, it is very difficult to get out of the cave swimming.

A life jacket, wetsuit, flippers, and goggles are really recommended if you absolutely want to do this adventure.

Unless you are really an experienced swimmer, we would definitely not recommend swimming to the cave.

Swim group tour with Lunch (from Lagos)

Since September it is no longer allowed to go into the cave by swimming, kayaking, or SUPs. The below tour can still be booked but will probably be cancelled by the activity provider. Currently, the best way to see the cave is with a boat trip .

Rating: 4.5/5 (94 reviews) / Duration: 4.5 hours

If you want to swim to the cave but prefer doing so in the presence of an experienced swimmer, and with the necessary safety equipment, then this group swim tour is for you.

This is a fun tour where lunch, alcoholic drinks including beer and Sangria, and a good atmosphere are all included.

You meet the group in Lagos and drive in a party van to Benagil where you will head into the ocean for a 60-minute swim to the cave. Life jackets as well as boards and inflatables are provided to ensure that everybody is safe.

Afterward you have lunch at the beach and right before you head back you do a quick hike to see the cave from above.

  • A unique way to get to the Benagil Cave
  • Transfer from Lagos is includeded
  • Towels, beach gear and even sun screen is all included
  • Lunch is included
  • This is a private tour
  • To participate in this tour a moderate physical fitness level is required
  • Not for people with heart problems, back problems or other serious medical conditions
  • Not wheelchair accessible

This is a cool experience if you want to experience the cave in a different way. The advantage of this group tour is that you don’t need to take care of anything, the guide takes care of all your belongings and you can change into your gear at the meeting point.

All participants mention that they felt safe in the water, even when there were some heavier waves.

Benagil cave

Benagil Cave – all you need to know

What’s the benagil cave .

The Benagil cave , also known as Algar de Benagil in Portuguese is one of the most famous and beautiful caves in the Algarve, Portugal.

The origin of this cave dates back to more than 20 million years ago.

Erosion has created a huge natural cavity in the limestone.  The cave is so big that it even houses a small sandy beach.

Part of the cave has collapsed, resulting in a wide-open hole in the center known as ‘the eye’.  Natural light enters the cave through this hole, it creates an almost otherworldly spectacle, especially at sunrise and sunset.

Seeing the cave from the inside is definitely impressive and easily one of the highlights of a visit to the Algarve in Portugal.

You can only get inside the cave by sea.

This can be with a boat, a kayak, a SUP, or if you are brave and adventurous you can swim to the cave.

It’s also possible to hike to the top of the cave.  The hike takes you to the hole from where you can try to peek inside.  It’s just a short hike and it’s free but it is not nearly as impressive as getting inside the cave.

But let’s start by explaining where you can find this beautiful cave.

What’s the Benagil sea cave location ?

The Benagil cave sometimes referred to as Grutas de Benagil by the locals, is located near the small fishing village of Benagil.

You will find the cave about 150 meters east of Benagil beach (Praia de Benagil in Portuguese).

This pleasant sandy beach attracts many visitors on summer days. If you are looking for more beautiful beaches in the Algarve, click here.

Fishermen also still use the beach to land their catch.

With a bit of luck, you can see them unload the fish from their boats and transfer it to the trucks which will take it to restaurants where you can taste these delicacies in the evening. Now that’s what I call a catch-of-the-day! 😀

The closest cities to the Benagil cave are Lagoa, Albufeira, Portimao one of the best towns in the Algarve , and Carvoeiro.

From Lagoa and Carvoeiro you drive in about 15 minutes to the village of Benagil. From Albufeira and Portimão it is a 30-minute drive to Benagil.

Daily many boat tours depart from the above-mentioned cities to the Benagil cave. We will share more information about these Benagil cave boat trips further in this post.

How far is Benagil Cave from Lisbon?

The Benagil cave lies 191 km from Lisbon. It’s a 2h30 minute drive by car.

If you don’t have a car, you could take one of the buses that connect Lisbon with the Algarve or ride the train.

If you are looking for a Lisbon itinerary, click here.

Both the bus as well as the train takes between 3-4 hours. Buses cost around € 6 – € 25, depending on the time of the day, the train is slightly more expensive.

TAP also offers domestic flights between Lisbon Airport and Faro Airport.

Here’s the train and bus schedule .

What has changed in September 2023?

The local government found that the crowds of boats, kayakers, SUPs, and swimmers led to dangerous situations at the Benagil cave. It has therefore been decided to develop guidelines to ensure that everybody can visit the cave safely and responsibly.

Pending these final guidelines, it has been decided to no longer allow kayakers, SUPs, and swimmers into the cave.

Boat tours can still visit the cave and can still get very close to the cave, like they’ve always done. (depending on the weather conditions)

Here you can read the official publication .

Is Benagil cave closed?

Benagil cave is not closed and can still be visited with a boat tour .

The boats are also still allowed to get close to the cave so that you can look inside.

What has changed is that it is currently no longer allowed to use the beach inside the cave. You may also no longer kayak, SUP, or swim to the cave. Regardless of whether you do this independently or with a tour.

All this is pending final regulations. (which we expect at the end of 2023 if the proposed timing is adhered to)

Best time to visit the Benagil cave

Here we share the best month and time of the day to visit Benagil cave.

What’s the best month to visit the Benagil cave ?

There are tours going to the Benagil cave all year round but the choices are limited in the colder winter months.

Summer months

During summer Algarve’s impressive beaches attract many tourists who want to work on their tan. The climate makes it an ideal beach destination.

In summer the temperatures rise to 30 degrees and the ocean water warms up to around 20 degrees.  This allows those who are not afraid of a little cold water to even take an occasional dip to cool down.

July and August are high season.

The beaches can become crowded, the parking lots quickly fill up and all the tourist sights are usually packed.

If you plan on visiting the Benagil cave during these months it’s best to book your tour in advance to avoid disappointment.  By booking in advance you are sure, you can go on your preferred date and time.

I would argue that the best seasons to visit the Benagil Cave are spring or fall.

The temperature is slightly cooler but there will be fewer crowds and you still can enjoy nice weather.

Spring and Fall

We recommend visiting the Benagil cave during spring or fall if you can.

You will be able to enjoy this beautiful area more because there are fewer people.

The Algarve is one of the sunniest regions in Europe.

Starting in May there will be 10 hours of sunshine every day and rainfall will be only a slight inconvenience.  Temperatures easily surpass 20 degrees Celsius.

It might not exactly be ideal to spend entire days at the beach and the ocean water is still cold at around 16 degrees.  It is though an ideal period for activity holidays.

The climate in Autumn is comparable.  The temperatures don’t drop below 20 degrees Celcius until December.  Nights are considerably chiller though with nighttime temperatures around 14 degrees Celcius.

The ocean water temperature gradually decreases, October still knows temperatures around 19 degrees Celcius, by the end of November, this has decreased to 17 degrees Celcius.

Spring and Summer offer the best of both worlds.  The weather is pleasant, the huge crowds are gone but there is still a lot going on.

Carvoeiro Beach Algarve Portugal

We visited the Algarve in winter , winter is the low season along Portugal’s south coast, and many places are closed and only a fraction of the tours are going.

The ocean is a bit rougher and less predictable during these months.  This increases the chances that your trip will get canceled due to the weather.

Therefore we recommend booking your trip online in advance for one of the first days of your vacation so that you can push your plans forward by a day in case the tour is canceled due to weather.

We often book through  GetYourGuide.  This way, you can secure your spot, but, might your plans suddenly change, you can usually cancel for free up to 24 hours before the trip.

Now that you know the best season to visit the Benagil caves, we are happy to give you the best time of day for your Benagil tour.

What’s the best time of the day to visit the caves of Benagil?

The best time of the day to visit the Benagil cave depends on your interests.

If you want to feel the sand of the cave’s beach between your toes you’re best to pick a time slot around noon.  The cave is relatively dark early in the morning and late in the afternoon, midday will allow you to take some good pictures as a memory of your excursion to the cave.

Most light enters the cave through the hole on the top, the so-called ‘eye of the cave’.  The sun is best between noon and 2 pm when it is vertically above the cave at its highest point.

If you plan to take Instagram-worthy pictures from the beach in the cave we would advise you to avoid any time before 10 am or after 2 pm.

Tours to the cave are limited to ensure that it never becomes over-crowded but this doesn’t mean that you will have the cave to yourself if you go there around noon.  There’s a constant flow of tours arriving at the cave from 10 in the morning till sunset.

If you want to quietly swim or paddle to the cave, it is best to do this as early as possible before the continuous flow of tourist boats starts.

To avoid the crowds, it is best that you make sure that you are ready to leave the beach at sunrise.

We did our boat trip during the golden hour, the last hour before sunset. The sun then casts really beautiful warm golden colors on the majestic cliffs.

This makes for an unforgettable experience.

As said before, tours leave for the cave all day long, but especially during the high season, we would advise you not to wait too long before booking.

Catamaran boat

Which boat is best for a Benagil Cave Boat Tour?

Some tours use small zodiac-like boats while others use catamarans. Not sure which one to choose. Here’s what to expect from both.

Small Benagil Cave Boat Tours

The boat trips with small boats usually last 2 to 2.30 hours and cover a relatively large part of the beautiful Algarve coastline. Along the way,  you will see no less than 20 caves, including of course the famous Benagil cave.

Small boats are of the zodiac type. They are fast and very navigable, but they cannot always enter all caves.  The skippers are very experienced but don’t take any risks. If they think the sea is wild they do not enter the caves, including  Benagil cave.

When we did our tour the sea was relatively calm.  Our skipper did his utmost to bring us as close as possible to all the caves and we safely entered the Benagil cave and one other large cave.

Along the way, you should also keep your eyes open for dolphins that are swimming along with your boat.

If the weather and conditions allow, the boats also stop so you can have a swim.

Don’t forget your swimsuit, towel, and sun cream.

Also, don’t forget to bring some warmer clothes. It is always colder on the water than on land and when the boats speed up it makes it feel even colder.

Life jackets are included with all tours.

  • A small boat allows you to see the caves up close.
  • Smaller groups.
  • More opportunities than with a large boat to enter the caves.
  • English, French, Portuguese, or Spanish-speaking guide.
  • Free cancellation up to 24 hours before the boat trip.
  • The tour that departs from Albufeira is wheelchair accessible.
  • Less suitable for small children. Tours from certain ports do not allow children under 5 years old. Read the terms and conditions carefully before you book.
  • Since the boat is going quite fast the ride can be bumpy, this makes the tour less suitable for you if you have back problems.
  • Not wheelchair accessible ( except for the departure from Albufeira).

Small boat Benagil Cave trips are offered from different places in the Algarve and although the tours are organized by different companies, the tour itself is, except for a few minor differences, largely the same.

As all tours are similar our advice would be to pick the port most convenient for you .

Catamaran Benagil boat tours

The “bigger” boats take at least two to three times as many people compared to the ones on zodiacs.     Depending on which company you go with it can be a catamaran for about 25 people or a bigger one that can take up to 40 people.

Catamaran tours are also available from various ports but there are fewer options than the small boat tours. The tours also last longer, so there are fewer departures in a day (often only 1)

Despite being bigger, these boats are still not really big.

Just like the smaller boats, they will try to enter the Benagil cave. The larger the boat, the more difficult this becomes of course.    This means that with these boats you are less likely to enter the caves, especially when the sea conditions are rough.

These boats feel a little less adventurous than the smaller ones and offer a more blissful experience. It is recommended for couples looking for a romantic experience.

Just know that if the see is rough, you will also feel it on a catamaran.

  • Catamarans offer a more relaxed, romantic experience
  • Some of the larger boats are wheelchair accessible.
  • Less opportunities than with a small boat to enter the caves.
  • Even though the ride will normally be smoother than on a zodiac there can be unexpected bumps and it may not be suitable if you are pregnant or have back problems

Visiting the Benagil cave will be truly one of the highlights of your Algarve holiday.

On foot, you can only see the top of the cave which is not nearly as spectacular as the inside.  The inside can only be reached over water.  It’s theoretically possible to swim to the cave but that is something that we only recommend for really experienced swimmers. (and it is currently not allowed)

Therefore our advice is to join an organized tour.

The most popular tour is a boat trip.  There’re daily boat tours to the cave, you can choose from small and fast boats, or slightly larger boats, and romantics should definitely opt for the catamaran.

The small boats are fast, agile, and adventurous. The catamaran sails stately through the water and is a blissful and peaceful experience.

Kayak and SUP tours used to be alternatives to a boat trip but have unfortunately been suspended for the time being. While the tours are still going you don’t get as close to the cave as with a boat tour.

The boat trips are available all year round, the other tours only in high season.

Benagil Cave is situated in the Algarve in Portugal’s southern region. It’s only 7 kilometers south of Lagoa where most public transport reaches and 60 kilometers west of Algarve’s capital city, Faro.

The closest towns to Benagil are Carvoeiro and Lagoa.

How to get to Benagil Cave in Algarve, Portugal

The best way to get to Benagil Cave by public transport is from Lagoa. The town is well connected to other towns on the Algarve by bus and train. From Terminal Rodoviário in Lagoa, take the 107 bus to Carvalho beach.

From there, you have to walk 15 minutes to Benagil beach to get to the caves.

Finally, the easiest way to get to Benagil Cave is by car. Once you pass Lagoa or Carvoeiro, there are brown signs pointing you to Benagil. I usually just plot in Benagil beach on the GPS and it leads me straight to it.

Benagil caves parking

Benagil beach is situated at the bottom of a steep U-turn. On top of the hill, there is a large parking space where you can leave your car free of charge. In the summer months, you should get there early so that you avoid getting to a filled-up parking lot and having to park on the steep, narrow road.

The walk down to the beach from Benagil caves parking is steep but short. You pass a couple of shops where you can rent kayaks and paddleboards on the way down, but there is also a tiny booth on the top of the beach.

Boat tours can be booked at the beach too.

Best time to go to Benagil Caves

The best time to visit Benagil Caves is spring and autumn. Though the caves can be visited all year round, the water is cold in winter and the crowds can be intense in summer.

If you visit Algarve in winter and want to see the caves, I suggest wearing a wetsuit if you go kayaking or paddleboarding – otherwise, the best alternative is to take a boat trip to stay dry. Keep in mind that boats don’t run if the waves are furious.

With that in mind, I always try to go there as early as possible in the morning to avoid the daytime crowds. It surely gets busier throughout the day.

Especially in summer, I recommend booking a tour in advance so you avoid long waiting time or that there are no available ways to get there.

Benagil Cave

Best way to visit Benagil Cave

There are three ways to explore this Portuguese treasure and I’ll list them all with their pros and cons here so that you can decide what is the best way to visit Benagil Cave for you.

Going on a Benagil Cave kayak tour is no arguing one of the most rewarding ways to see the cave. Going by kayak also means you can enter the cave and walk on the sand, getting epic pictures from inside the sea cave.

I highly recommend going as early as possible in the morning so that you avoid the crowds. As one of the most popular tourist attractions in the Algarve, I’m sure you can imagine how crowded it can get later on in the day.

Another thing to keep in mind is the boat traffic to the mouth of the cave that gets busier and busier throughout the day. You will also discover more of the breathtaking Benagil caves kayaking along the coastline.

You find Benagil Cave kayak rental at Benagil beach – either when entering the beach or along the road between the parking and the beach.

You have the option to go on your own or join a guided tour, which I recommend if you’re not used to kayaking. If you’ve done a lot of sea kayaking before and are not fond of going in large groups, you’ll have a blast going solo!

You can book a kayak tour here.

Benagil Cave tour

Standup paddleboard

Discovering the Benagil Cave by standup paddleboard gives you all the same benefits of visiting it by kayak. Yet, it’s a different adventure, and some like it more than kayaking (read: me). What I love about this, is that you get time inside the cave and can truly feel the magic and grandeur of the cave.

Paddleboards can be rented at all the same places as kayaks along the road from the parking to the beach.

If you haven’t tried standup paddleboarding (SUP) before and are curious about it, don’t worry. You can go on a guided SUP tour where the guide will give you a mini-lesson on how to use the board before getting in the water. It’s also easy to stand on your knees if you struggle to keep balance on your feet.

Book your Benagil Cave standup paddleboard experience here.

Cave in Algarve

The last way to see Benagil Cave is by boat. This is a great way to see the cave if you don’t want to get in the water, don’t want to make the effort of paddling, or don’t feel comfortable on a kayak or paddleboard.

It’s also the only way to go if you’re not a strong swimmer as it’s not recommended to do either previous activities if you’re not comfortable in the water.

The con about going by boat is that you’ll only be able to see the cave from the outside. It’s not permitted to let tourists get off the boat and enter the cave.

That said, it’s an exceptionally comfortable way to see the most bewildering cave of the Algarve.

Benagil boat tours leave from Benagil beach and can be booked directly on the beach, but you can also find loads of boat tours from other towns in Algarve .

Many of these include dolphin watching which is a great opportunity!

Benagil caves tour

Can you swim to Benagil Cave?

While it’s not far from the beach to Benagil Cave, there are strong underwater currents in this area of the Algarve. The tides also shift quickly.

For this reason, it can be extremely dangerous to try to swim from Benagil beach to Benagil sea cave.

I don’t recommend attempting to swim there as it’s a huge risk that can be fatal. It’s not that expensive to rent a paddleboard or a kayak to stay safe.

Find the best Benagil cave tour for you

There are numerous Benagil caves tours from all over Algarve. Here are a few options including tips so you can find the best Benagil Cave tour for you. All tours include a safety brief and life vests. Swimming will always depend on the water conditions – satefy first.

As for dolphin spotting, remember that they are wild animals and might or might not be spotted. The boat crew on the dolphin-watching boats are trained to look for them and will know the right spots, but there is still no guarantee.

What to expect from a Benagil Cave tour

You can expect quite a different experience of Benagil Cave depending on how you visit and when you go. In August, it will get crowded and boats queue outside the cave entrance to let tourists get a peek inside the cave.

Also, be aware that the bigger boats don’t get that far into the cave so you should go on a smaller boat to actually see the cave. The smaller boats can also mean a bumpy ride as they speed more and water can splash into the boat.

But the smaller boats also enter more of the Benagil caves along the rugged coastline. Depending on the tides, boats take you far inside hidden caves where you can touch the cave ceiling and almost feel as there’s no space for the boat.

Most boat tours visit 10-20 caves and last 1-2 hours.

Going by kayak or paddleboard gives you a more hands-on experience. Whether you rent individually or go in a guided group, you can visit more of the caves and beaches along the coast.

Personally, being close to the water and feeling nature up close, getting off at hidden beaches, and feeling the caves right there is a much more exciting experience. Yet I know, it’s not for everyone.

Going on a guided tour gives you the safety of the guide knowing the tide and safety of entering the different caves and I highly recommend it if you plan on visiting more caves than Benagil Cave.

Reflections on visiting the Cave of Benagil

After visiting the mesmerizing Cave of Benagil for the first time, I was in no doubt why Huffington Post listed it as one of the top 10 coolest caves in the world.

Before I went, I was personally not sure if Benagil cave was worth visiting and if it would feel totally overrated. Truth is, once I entered the cave and set foot on the beach, I was completely overwhelmed!

I’ve traveled extensively in the country and can say that this is the coolest sea cave Portugal has to showcase. If you have the chance to include one cave in Algarve, Portugal on your itinerary , make sure it’s a Benagil Cave tour.

How To Visit Benagil Cave – Everything You Need To Know! (Best Tours, How To Get There, Top Tips & More!)

Posted on Last updated: April 21, 2024

Benagil Cave is possibly one of the most famous places in Portugal, and for good reason.

It was made famous from a photo that went viral on social media, and it quickly became one of the most visited natural attractions of the Algarve.

We incorporated our Benagil Cave tour from Lagos with exploring other beaches in the area, and it was easily the best day of our Algarve itinerary.

I was afraid Benagil Cave would be an Instagram vs reality moment, where it looks stunning in photos but it wouldn’t be in person. I’m glad that I was proved wrong.

Benagil Caves in the Algarve is a huge sea cave with a hole in the ceiling and doors that open up directly in the sea. It’s a gorgeous natural formation, which deserves a place in your Portugal bucket list.

In this guide I put together everything you need to know about visiting Benagil Cave. Including how to get to Benagil Cave, the best Benagil Cave tours, the best time to visit, tips from my experience and more!

We visited Benagil Cave on a sunrise kayak tour, and it was the best decision we could have made. If you want to know everything about visiting Benagil Cave, read on!

What is Benagil Cave?

Benagil Cave is a huge sea cave located on the southern coast of Portugal, in the Algarve region. It’s often described also as Benagil Cathedral, because of its huge size and imposing natural formation.

Benagil sea cave is characterised by two entrances facing the sea and a giant hole on its ceiling. Inside the cave there is also a small beach where you can walk around, dip your feet in the sea and enjoy this stunning sea cave.

From inside the cave you can see all the different shades of gold and amber rock that line the cave walls, telling the history of thousands of years of sea and wind erosion. It’s a sight of incredible natural beauty.

How to get to Benagil sea cave

You can only reach Benagil Cave by the sea. Despite being located along the Algarve coast on mainland Portugal, the entrances of Benagil Cave face directly into the sea.

If you walk along the coast you will be able to look into the distinctive hole of Benagil Cave, but you won’t be able to access the cave from there.

When I visited in summer 2021 they had placed a security fence around the hole, meaning you could look into Benagil Cave but without getting too close.

Our kayaks inside Benagil Cave

Our kayaks inside Benagil Cave

Benagil Cave is just 200 metres from Benagil Beach, which is considered one of the best beaches in the Algarve .

You can only get to the Benagil Cave location by sea with a kayak, SUP or boat. Some people also swim to Benagil sea caves, as the distance is fairly short.

However this isn’t recommended unless you know the location and tides really well, and unless you’re a confident and strong swimmer. Joining a kayak , SUP or boat tour is the easiest and safest way to get to Benagil Cave.

The tours to Benagil Cave usually start directly in Benagil Beach, unless you book one specifically with a transfer. Since the town around it is fairly small, most people usually stay in either Lagos , Albufeira or Portimao to then visit Benagil.

These popular Algarve destinations are all within a 25 to 40 minute drive from Benagil. If you’re driving your own car to Benagil Cave, you can find a big free parking area here .

Best time to visit Benagil Cave

The best time to visit Benagil Cave is as early as possible in the morning. I’m not joking when I say that the time of visit could make or break your Benagil Cave tour.

We did a 7AM kayak tour to Benagil Cave and our group was the only one there. We spent half an hour wandering around the cave and taking photos, sharing this gorgeous natural rock formation with only 10 other people.

When we walked past the cave entrance later in the afternoon and peaked in, we were shocked by the amount of people and kayaks stacked inside the cave, to say nothing of the chaos that was Benagil Beach.

You should also check the tide times. We visited during low tide so there was a lot of sandy beach to sit and walk on. In the afternoon the tide had gone up, so besides there being more people, it also felt more crowded as the beach was smaller.

Our experience visiting Benagil Cave

I’ll be honest and say that before visiting Benagil Cave, I was convinced it would be one of those overhyped locations that became famous on social media but which is actually disappointing in real life.

I was very happy to be proved wrong. Benagil Cave in Portugal is a place of truly stunning natural beauty, which I believe should feature on everyone’s Europe bucket list .

Walking on the small beach inside the cave, looking up at the hole in the cave ceiling and admiring the layers of rock and erosion that brought it to look like that over millions of years, really has a way of making you feel small.

I also really enjoyed kayaking along the rest of the coast, exploring other sea caves and admiring the golden cliffs of Praia da Marinha. I thought it would be a lot of hype just for one cave, but there was actually more to it.

We did the 7AM sunrise kayak tour and were not disappointed. I heard from others who visited during the day that they hated it because huge number of kayaks, boats and people crowded into the cave.

Benagil Cave is a truly unique natural rock formation, which deserves its place on every Portugal itinerary . If you want to fully enjoy it, make the effort to wake up early and give it the attention it deserves.

Where to stay to visit Benagil Cave

The town surrounding Benagil Cave and Benagil Beach is fairly small and quiet. This is the reason why most travellers visiting Benagil Cave stay in other towns of the Algarve .

We stayed in Lagos and loved it, although it is the town furthest away. The drive from Lagos to Benagil Cave is around 40 minutes, but the town itself is very cute, as well as being close to Ponta da Piedade and other awesome Algarve beaches.

Albufeira is closer, only a 30-minute drive to Benagil, and a great place to stay for young travellers looking to party. The town has a beautiful beach right in front of it, and a reputation for being a party destination.

Portimao is also around a 30-minute drive from Benagil. It’s a great starting point for many of the boat and kayak tours to Benagil that I’ve listed above.

Some people try to visit Benagil Cave on a day trip from Lisbon but that’s not worth it in my opinion. You would spend longer driving back and forth than enjoying Benagil.

You should plan your Portugal itinerary to visit cities like Lisbon , Sintra and Porto on separate days from Benagil.

Luxury in Portimao – Jupiter Marina Hotel : With its infinity pool with sea views, spacious rooms and spa, it’s the perfect place to treat yourself after an early morning kayaking to Benagil Cave!

The Ultimate Guide to Visiting Benagil Cave Portugal in 2024

How to visit benagil cave portugal – grotte de benagil.

Is it worth visiting the famous Benagil Cave in Portugal?  Absolutely.  The Algarve Caves are a particularly stunning part of the Algarve, Portugal region.

benagil cave tour near me

My trip to Benagil Cave, Portugal was my favorite thing I did while I was in the Algarve.

There are a lot of beautiful beaches near Lagos but the Benagil Sea Cave is the highlight of the Algarve.

Many locals call it the Gruta de Benagil, because it looks like a stunning grotto upon the ocean.

Benagil Cave or Benagl cuevas de benagil portugal

Algar de Benagil, its Portuguese name, is spectacular inside the cave with the sunlight streaming through the roof and the golden sand and beautiful azure waters.  It is a natural wonder of the world and pure travel inspiration for those who have not been.

Discovering Benagil Cave was more than just ticking off a bucket list item; it was a dive into the heart of nature’s artistry. From the echoing songs of the waves inside the cave to the mesmerizing light show painted by the sun, each moment was a testament to the cave’s living beauty.

Join me as I recount the essential tips for navigating your visit, from the best times to avoid the crowds to capturing that perfect photo.

benagil cave tour near me

I invite you to see Benagil through my eyes: not as a mere tourist, but as a Portuguese resident drawn to this part of Portugal. I’ve included all the most current information to make your experience truly exceptional.

My favorite boat tour I ever took to Benagil Cave was the one I took with my nephew leaving from Portimao. We took this boat tour and it was great because he was free.

Where is Benagil Beach Cave – Benagil Sea Cave Location ?

This particularly stunning Portugal Cave (sometimes known a the cave beach Algarve) is located along the coast next to Benagil Beach (Praia de Benagil), in the Algarve Portugal.  The closest cities are is  Portimao, Albufeira, Carvoeiro and Lagoa.

Benagil Cave is about a 40 minute drive east of Lagos or as the map shows a 15 minute drive from Lagoa in South Portugal.

How can you get to the  Benagil Cave Algarve Portugal ?

There are several ways you can visit the Benagil Cave and Benagil Beach.  I recommend taking one of the Benagil Caves boat tours to get there.  The cave can be visited any time of year.

How to Visit Benagil Cave- Four Options

Update 2024 – You are no longer allowed to swim, kayak or paddleboard into Bengil Caves.

Swim – from Benagil Beach you can swim approximately 200 metres to the Benagil Cave.  You must be a strong swimmer to reach the cave.  The tides and currents change quickly here and I recommend a life jacket or lido to make it there.

I actually do not recommend swimming here but I have seen some people do this.

Kayak or Paddleboard – You can rent Kayaks or Paddleboards for about the same price as a sea boat tour if you want.  Its a cool idea but I think for the price it is so much better to take the tour as you will see more of the Algarve coastline.

Take one of the Benagil Cave Boat Tours .  This is the best way to visit the Benagil Caves.  It is the safest and best option as you will visit other caves in the area on the boat trips. This is the top rated boat tour I took from Albufeira.

benagil cave tour near me

I have visited the Algarve at least 20 times and I have gone to the Benagil Caves at least 10 times as I always take visitors. I have done this tour from Lagos , and this boat trip from Portimao as well.

Drive – you can actually drive to Benagil Cave.  You will only be able to view the cave from above and look down at the beach.  You can walk up to the hole in the ceiling of the cave and see it from above, but there is no way to get to the cave itself on foot.

It is cool to see the cave from above and if you are visiting the beach it is worth a look.   Then you can take one of the Benagil Cave Tours to go into the cave from below.

What’s the best way to see the Benagil Sea Cave Portugal – Take a  Benagil Cave Tour!

Most people will leave from Benagil Beach or one of the surrounding cities in the Algarve to visit the caves.  It is right next to the beach if you are looking for a direct boat tour to the caves.

Benagil Sea Cave Portugal benagil cave beach portugal

I highly recommend taking one of the Benagil Cave Tours to visit the Benagil Beach Cave.  These tours leave from Benagil Beach, last 2-3 hours and cost anywhere from 30-50 Euro and will take you straight to the Algarve Cave Beach, among many other locations along the coast.

Taking a boat tour is absolutely the best decision. I learned so much about the coast on these tours. This top rated tour from Faro is great because you get to see so much more of the Algarve. I had a great time on this boat tour from Portimao as we were able to see dolphins as well.

There are many different tour companies offering trips to the sea caves.  My suggestion is to go early as it gets quite crowded later in the day.  You will be amazed at how many more boats you will see the closer you get to the cave.

Cave in Algarve

You will want to take one of the smaller boats as this means there will be less people on the boat and they are also faster.  So less time in the boat with fewer people and more time in the cave!

Some of the tours combine the sea caves along with dolphin watching which is well worth it as well.

My experience getting to the Portugal Sea Cave in Algarve

The first time I visited, I flew into Lisbon and spent a few days there before taking a bus to Lagoa (not Lagos).  The bus takes three hours and costs around 30€.

Sea Cave in Algarve

You can also take the train but this takes the same amount of time and costs a little bit more.  From Lagoa you can take a 15 minute taxi ride for 10€.

I then took a boat tour from Benagil Beach to the sea caves.  Please note the tours also leave from Lagos, Portimão, Albufeira and Vilamoura.

benagil cave tour near me

To visit Benagil cave, you’ll want to plan on about two and a half hours.  I mentioned before that some parts of the boat ride were quite rough but it was never scary or dangerous.

I went first thing in the morning and we were one of the first boats to the sea cave.  Once inside it was absolutely beautiful.  I took a few pictures and it was time to go again.

When we were leaving the cave there were quite a few boats lined up to come inside.  As the entrance is quite narrow and the cave is not huge it gets quite congested waiting for boats to leave so others can get in because it is just not big enough for all the boats.

Benagil Algarve Portugal

This is also why I think some boats do not allow you to get out of the boat once inside.  It is a timing thing where they want everyone to be able to go inside.

After the cave we spent our time going along the coast checking out the beautiful coastline.

Things to know about Benagil Algarve Portugal

The views inside the cave are absolutely beautiful – even with all the people there.  There is some conflicting information about whether or not you can actually get off the boat when you get inside the cave.

beaches of lagos portugal and Carvoeiro town

I was able to get off the boat every time I went from 2012 to 2023 and go to the beach inside of the cave.  I have read recently that this is no longer possible.

I am wondering if this is being left up to the boat tours?  Are they trying to get in, let you click, click and then want to leave again so that more boats can get in?  As there was quite a line of boats waiting to get in this made me wonder if it is because of the sheer number of people going.

You will definitely have a better chance of stepping foot on the beach in the off season compared to the middle of summer when everyone is on holiday in the Algarve.  Something to think about when you go.

Practical Information about Praia de Bengali or  Benagil Beach Algarve and Benagil Sea Cave – Grutas de Benagil.

When is the best time to visit benagil caves.

You will want to go early in the morning to the Benagil Sea cave to avoid the crowds.  The boat tours take 2-3 hours and are cheaper in the off season.

The beach is also known as Praia de Benagil in Portuguese and you will find the cave under grutas de Benagil.

You can go out for the morning on the boat tour and then spend the afternoon at Benagil Beach and pack a picnic to make a day of it.  To get to the beach you need to go down a steep walkway to get down to the sand.

beaches of lagos portugal near carveiro portugal

The sea can be quite rough which makes the boat ride quite bumpy.  As it is such a short ride to the caves I would say it is worth it.  Also, it is only rough in certain places and the driver can always take breaks as well.

My driver liked to turn and spin the boat and get us wet.  No problems with that I brought my wet seal for my camera so it was well protected.

You can check out my post to see the mirrorless camera that I use.  I wish I had taken my gopro to use as that is water safe.

Ensure you wear sunscreen and apply it before you even arrive at the beach.  Also pack plenty of water and snacks.  I actually wore my swimsuit under my clothes and brought my towel as well as we were able to swim along the coast.

Restaurants near Benagil Beach

There are many restaurants located along the coast if you want to stop for lunch or a snack.  Most of the restaurants have beautiful sea views and fresh seafood.

  • Casa de Pasto “Brisa do Mar” Praia de Benagil – Great food at a great price
  • Restaurante O ALGAR Praia de Benagil – Great atmosphere, good food and brilliant service
  • O Pescador Benagil Estr. de Benagil – Wonderful place with great food just up from Benagil Beach

Benagil Cave Update : 2024

Recent regulations have changed the way visitors can experience this natural wonder. As of September 2023, swimming into the caves or using kayaks and stand-up paddleboards (SUPs) to enter the caves is no longer permitted due to safety concerns. This is a temporary directive from the Maritime Authority.

However, boat tours are still available, offering a close-up view of the caves’ stunning interiors. On these tours, disembarking from the boat inside the cave is not allowed. It’s essential to check with tour operators for the latest updates and options for exploring the Benagil caves.

Are these entry restrictions permanent?

It seems that the restrictions on entering the Benagil Cave might be temporary, but there’s no clear indication of when they might be lifted. The good news is that boat tours are still an option. For a more intimate experience, consider a smaller boat tour, as they can maneuver more easily inside the cave, offering a closer view of its stunning features.

Where are The Benagil Caves Portugal?

The famous Benagil cave, also known as Algar de Benagil , is located in the Algarve region of southern Portugal along the Atlantic coast. The caves are close to several popular Algarve destinations, including Lagos (45 minutes away), Albufeira (30 minutes away), and Portimão (45 minutes away).

The Algarve caves themselves are situated on Portugal’s southern coastline . The nearby towns of Carvoeiro, Lagos, and Armação de Pêra are also worth visiting, as they offer a range of dining, shopping, and entertainment options, as well as access to some of the Algarve’s most beautiful beaches.

In addition to the nearby towns and cities, the Benagil Caves are located near several other natural attractions, including the Seven Hanging Valleys Trail , Ria Formosa Natural Park , Praia da Rocha , Praia da Marinha (Marina Beach), and the Algar Seco rock formations , making the area a popular destination for nature lovers and outdoor enthusiasts.

How Can you Get To the Benagil Caves?

This beautiful cave in the Algarve region of Portugal is a must-see natural wonder. There are several different ways to reach the grutas de Benagil , each offering a different experience. Here are some of the best options:

Traveling by Car or Bus

For those who prefer a more independent approach, it is possible to take public transportation to the Benagil Caves. From major cities like Faro, Lagos, or Albufeira, you can take a bus to the nearby town of Lagoa. From Lagoa, you can catch another bus to Praia de Benagil, a beautiful beach located just a short swim from the caves.

If you do come by car, please be aware that parking , in general, can get crazy , especially during the high season. But, a big plus is parking is free (if you can find a spot). Parking is at the top of the cliff, and once you park, you will have to walk downhill to the small beach.

If you plan on coming by car, make sure to come early. Remember that the Benagil caves are an extremely popular spot. The tours start arriving at 9 am, usually when the kayak and SUP rental kiosks open. Come a little bit early to avoid all the madness.

Benagil Cave Tours

The most popular way to visit the Benagil Caves is by booking a guided tour . Tours typically depart from nearby cities like Lagos, Albufeira, and Portimão. This is the best option for those who prefer a guided experience, as a knowledgeable tour guide will not only take you to the caves but also to the surrounding area.

How Far Is Benagil Cave From Lisbon

The Benagil Caves are approximately 170 miles (275 km) from Lisbon , the capital of Portugal. By car, the journey takes around 2.5 to 3 hours via the A2 and A22 highways.

🚗 If you’d like to  explore the Algarve , why not rent a car? It is the  easiest way to get around  and explore the region. Our recommendation is to use a comparison website like  Rentalcars  or  Discovercars  to see what’s available and compare prices between rental companies.

Alternatively, you can take a train or a bus. The train ride from Lisbon to the Algarve region takes about 3 hours, with the closest train station to the caves being Tunes or Albufeira. From there, you can hire a taxi or use a rideshare service to reach Benagil. Buses are also available, taking around 4 hours to reach the area , with the closest bus stop in Lagoa. From Lagoa, it’s a short drive, taxi, rideshare trip, or bus to Benagil.

Benagil Caves Portugal

What is the Best Time To Go

The best time of year to visit is during the fall and spring seasons when there are fewer people around. The shoulder seasons are between April and June or September and October. The weather conditions are nice during these months, with warm temperatures that aren’t too hot.

In spring, you can expect an average temperature of around 64°F (18°C), while in fall, it’s about 68°F (20°C). Make sure to pack a light jacket for cooler evenings. Good weather and fewer crowds are a good reason to come and visit during these months. It is also possible to visit the cave during the winter season (or low season) , but we’d recommend only doing a boat tour as the weather can be chilly.

If you plan to visit during the busy summer months , which are between July and August, there are a few ways to avoid crowds . First, book your tour early and choose the earliest time available. Mornings are a better time to visit because it’s less crowded, and the caves look amazing in the morning light. Also, try to visit on a weekday instead of a weekend. Also, opt for low tide as the beach is much bigger inside the cave during low tide.

Things to Know Before You Go

There are a couple of key things that you should know before you go to the Benagil sea cave:

There isn’t much around

So to get to the Benagil Caves, you must first get to Benagil beach. Once you get to the location, the parking lot is on top of the cliff , and then there is a small one-way main road that makes a U-loop from the top down to the beach and back again to the top. The road down to the beach is steep and usually filled with cars trying to find a parking space. It’s chaos.

There are no hotels nearby, and only two restaurants, O Pescador and Dumar d’Benagil . If you plan on staying for lunch or dinner, reserve a spot.

The beach itself is small and not the ideal beach for lounging. At the entrance, there are several kiosks renting kayaks and SUPs by the hour. Along with a kayak/SUP, you’ll get a waterproof bag for your valuables. The beach also has a bathroom and a small snack kiosk.

It can get really crowded

If you Google the top things to do in Portugal, the Benagil caves will probably pop up. The caves are magical, but because of their popularity, they are overrun with tourists, especially during the peak season. During the summer, it is common that are no kayaks or SUPs available for rental due to the high demand.

If you plan on visiting the caves during the high season, the option is to either book a tour or arrive early (7h00-8h00) to avoid all the crowds.

The caves are right next to the beach

Yes, you heard right. The beach is just outside of the cave. Although previously you were able to kayak, SUP, or swim to the saves, this is no longer allowed.

You can’t really see the cave from above

If you want to see the top of the cave, you can do it yourself. It is a short hike from the parking lot. All you need to do is walk along the cliff going east, and you’ll happen upon the opening to the cave.

Be aware that there are fences all around the opening, which limit your ability to actually see the beach below. Many people hop the fences for a better view, but this is not recommended for obvious safety reasons.

The Benagil Caves Portugal

A tour is really the best way to experience the caves

Trust me when I say there’s no better way to experience the stunning Benagil Cathedral Cave in Portugal than by taking a guided tour . Imagine you and your pals taking a boat ride, cruising through the turquoise waves, and marveling at the majestic cliffs and golden sands of the Algarve coastline.

An expert local guide will not only navigate the waters for you but also share fascinating stories about the cave’s history and formation, giving you a richer understanding of this natural wonder. If you get on a boat trip from Lagos, Portimão, or Ferragudo, for example,  you will see about 15-20 sea caves (along with the main attraction) and visit nearby beaches. Depending on the tides, your skipper will take you through tunnels and into completely dark caves.

This is just one of the reasons why a tour is the best way to see the caves and the surrounding region. And there are many different tour companies departing for all major Algarve cities, including Lagos, Portimao, and Albufeira.

Benagil Cave: What You Need to Know About Visiting The Algarve’s Stunning Location

Planning a trip to the Algarve’s Benagil Cave? Discover exactly why you need to visit, how to get there and where you should stay with this brilliant guide.

I remember when Benagil Cave was a little-known destination for travellers, a hidden landmark in one of Portugal’s dreamiest escapes, the Algarve .

Well, those days are long gone, and it’s no surprise why.

The impressive rock formation is one of the most iconic sea caves in the world and a perfect place to take some impressive AF photos on your holiday in Portugal. But there are a few things you’ll want to keep in mind when heading out to see the Benagil Cave.

So, let me guide you through all the essentials and give you some helpful tips for making the most of your visit to the seaside cavern. Ready to explore?

What is Benagil Cave?

Benagil Cave

Hold up – before you wack out your kayak, put on your swimsuit and get your camera ready for a Portugal landmark you have to see to believe, you might want to know what exactly it is you’re looking at.

Benagil Cave is a naturally formed sea cave resulting from centuries of water shaping the limestone walls both inside and out. It sits on the rocky coastline of the Algarve between two of my favourite places to stay in Portugal , Lagos and Faro.

The large opening on top was most likely a result of rain taking its toll on the cave’s ceiling over a really long period. Inside the cave, the otherworldly-looking patterns on the rocks show this natural attraction’s age.

Just how ancient is it? Most experts estimate this beautiful landmark is around 20 million years old.

Tip: If you take a kayak inside the arching entrance, park it on the sandy beach area at low tide and walk around to get the best vantage points of this cave beach in Algarve, Portugal.

Why Visit Benagil Cave?

Benagil Cave

Now that you know exactly what the Benagil Cave is, you might be asking yourself if it’s worth the trouble of figuring out how to get there. I’ll make it easy on you and give you a one-word answer: Yes.

Ok, simply saying you should go to this isn’t doing it justice. I’ll go out on a limb and say that no Portugal itinerary is complete without making time to visit the Algarve coast and adding Benagil Cave to your schedule of travel adventures.

If you want to post the most epic story for the ‘Gram, Benagil Cave provides the perfect backdrop.

Time this right, when the sun is hitting at just the right angle through the large opening on the ceiling, and you’ll get a photo that looks like you’re staring through a portal to another world.

If all this sounds like hyperbole, I assure you it’s not. Benagil Cave is genuinely one of the most photo-worthy destinations in Europe, one you can’t afford to miss when visiting the Algarve.

Planning Your Visit to the Benagil Cave

Benagil cave address .

Benagil Cave

The official address for Benagil Cave is 8400-401 Lagoa, Portugal . But try giving that street number to a taxi driver, and you might have a lost cabbie that you need to tip much higher than I recommend in my handy guide to tipping in Portugal .

To make it easier, just ask your driver to take you to Benagil Beach or wherever the meetup location is for your Benagil Cave tour if you reserve one on Get Your Guide (more on those in a minute). Or, if you’re heading there solo, plug in Benagil Cave into Google Maps and let technology handle the fine details of creating a Benagil Cave map for you.

Benagil Cave Opening Times

Technically speaking, Benagil Cave is open rain or shine, all day, every day of the year.

However, you’ll want to show up shortly after the sun rises to have the best light for your photos. You’ll also want to get there before the crowds begin to swell quicker than the nearby waves. Keep an eye on the tide chart because high tides can make matters a bit more complicated when navigating the terrain.

Visiting Benagil Cave Independently

If you want to forgo a Benagil Caves tour and take more of a DIY approach, you’re in luck because you can access the Benagil Cave independently.

First of all, you’ll need to get to one of the amazing Algarve beaches near Benagil Caves, Portugal. The good news is it’s close to many of my favourite locations in the Algarve.

You can take a train from Lagos or Faro to Portimão and then take a taxi or bus from there. On average, taking a combination of train and taxi will cost you around $15 (£12.5) from Lagos or $20 – $25 (£16.5 – £21) from Faro to reach the Benagil caves.

If you’re staying in Lagos, the journey to Benagil Cave, Portugal, takes around 40 minutes, but it’s over 1 hour if you start in Faro.

Getting Inside the Cave

Benagil Cave

How can you reach the caves of Benagil all by yourself? You can take a rather long and somewhat challenging swim from Benagil Beach – however, you really should only do this in low tide if you’re a strong swimmer. It’s not far at all, but it’s better to be safe than sorry.

For those who don’t fancy swimming, chartering a boat is the easiest way to get to the cave.

Or, if you’re not up for that. You can easily walk to the cave if you want to look down from a bird’s eye view, which can make for incredible photo ops.

Now for a cautionary tale. Never, I repeat, never try to fly your drone through the top of the cave. I did this: It lost GPS, lost control and plummeted into the abyss. I had to charter a boat to get into the cave to retrieve it – and the poor thing was never quite the same again.

It did mean I got to spend time in one of the best landmarks in Portugal , which I took full advantage of, but I’d rather it was under (much) less stressful circumstances.

So do yourself a favour and be content with the photos you snap from inside the gorgeous Benagil Cave in Algarve.

Visiting Benagil Cave On a Tour

Benagil Cave

Benagil Cave tours are on my short list of cool things you must do when visiting Portugal. And to be completely honest with you, I think you’ll get way more out of visiting Benagil Cave if you book a tour.

But you can’t just book any random tour and expect great results. Like many of the best places to visit in Europe , you want to do your homework when booking a Benagil Cave tour.

Luckily, I did that part for you and discovered a couple of incredible options for your cave beach adventures in Portugal.

By Speedboat

For the busiest travellers who want to get in, get out, snap that photo, and tick that Benagil Cave box, book the Speedboat Adventure Tour .

You’ll meet near the Port of Portimão before taking a 90-minute high-speed adventure with friendly local guides along the incredible Algarve coast. It’s a fun and unique way to see the Benagil Cave and surrounding shoreline, but remember that you won’t be able to explore inside the cave.

If you want to get a little more up close and personal with the legendary Portugal sea cave, make your tour a Kayaking Experience to remember.

This aquatic excursion is popular for a reason and sells out quickly. So book in advance if you want to join an expert-guided adventure paddling through Portugal’s Algarve region on your way to the magnificent Benagil Sea Cave.

Where to Stay Near Benagil Cave

Locating a hotel near Benagil Cave can be challenging. While there are Portugal Airbnbs and vacation rentals, luxury and boutique resorts in the surrounding area are few and far between.

But don’t stress; I’ve found the perfect hotel in the Algarve if you want to be a short ride away from the Benagil Sea Cave by boat.

Casa Bela Moura Boutique Hotel

Location is one of many reasons to choose Casa Bela Moura Boutique Hotel . The down-to-earth 4-star hotel has only 15 rooms, which helps it to provide a totally intimate atmosphere.

The charming boutique hotel has an outdoor pool, jacuzzi and a wine bar on-site, giving you plenty of opportunities to discuss your adventures in style and comfort. Each room is uniquely designed and feels like a home away from home on your holiday in Portugal .

Check Rates and Availability

Alternatively, check all accommodations near Benagil Cave on Booking.com .

Why do a Boat Trip to the Algarve Caves? Video

The Algarve coastline is one of the most beautiful in the world. The erosion work is fascinating with pinacles, arches and sea caves. There are several places where you can enjoy boat tours, but I think the best tours include the fascinating Benagil Sea Cave.

Let’s start with a 2min video, showing you what to expect on a 1-hour Boat Trip around the Algarve caves including the famous Benagil Sea Cave, which, as you will see, was the hardest one to film…

The easiest way to see those amazing caves is to take a boat tour. Here are some options – Photos continue below

Boat Tours including Benagil

  • From Portimao, tours along the coast to Benagil sea cave and other Algarve caves – Check out boat, program and price
  • From Albufeira, tours along the coast but not entering Benagil – Check out boat, program and price
  • Or these tours from Albufeira (but not all enter the cave) –  See options
  • Drive to Benagil beach and enjoy a 1h boat tour to the Algarve caves and cliffs – book at the beach
  • Kayak Tour including Benagil – See Options
  • And also from Armaçao da PEra, Lagos, Vilamoura…   CHECK ALL TOURS TO BENAGIL COASTLINE

Other Algarve Boat Tours (with other caves and cliffs)

  • Near Tavira for the islands and the lagoons
  • Near Faro, boat tours to the Ria Formosa reserve and its bird life
  • From Lagos for the Western Algarve Sea Caves under Ponta da Piedade –  you can explore them by Kayak

Departure from Benagil Beach

I wanted to see the Benagil sea caves and reduce the amount of time on the water (because my dad and I can be seasick), so I opted for one of the tour companies departing from Benagil Beach (see review at the end).

Benagil beach is not very interesting, but you can see how busy it gets with all the boats coming from around.

How to access the Benagil Sea Cave

Benagil sea cave location  .

The photo below has been taken from the Benagil Beach at mid-tide. Where the boat is is the left entrance to the Benagil sea cave, one of the most famous places in Portugal .

Options to get inside the Benagil cave

There are 3 ways to get inside the Benagil Cave:

  • Option 1  – Take a boat trip along the coast including the cave (as we have just seen above) – the rest of my amazing Boat Trip Algarve continues after with many more photos
  • Option 2 – From Benagil beach you can reach the cave by kayak if the sea is quiet enough
  • Option 3 – Benagil cave swim (not recommended) – If you want to admire it better, it is possible to swim from the Benagil Beach to the cave. However I don’t recommend it. But if you are considering it, read this:
  • You have to be a strong swimmer. The owner of the boat company I used explained to me that few people drowned
  • Go only when waters are calm and at low tide
  • Be careful with all the boats coming in and out
  • Don’t swim too close to the cliffs as a wave can push you against it
  • If the boats stop operating because of rough sea, do NOT go, read about the couple who was stranded there for 12h
  • You can have a look at Christoph Papenfuss’ experience and photos of the Algar de Benagil

Entering the Benagil cave by boat

Benagil is a very famous location. My boat tour included entering the famous sea cave. So below, you can see that we are queuing to enter it…

Note, that conditions must be good to enter the cave. The pilot can decided not to go.

Benagil sea cave entrance

The dome is very impressive with the different colors of rings and the hole with the blue spot at the top.

Benagil Sea Cave Algarve 2

Benagil cave Beach

Mid-tide is the better time to enter by boat, as you can get deep enough in the cave. However, there are big waves, so it is not so easy to take pictures.

On the next shot, you can see 2 persons standing in the beach of the cave – see further below about the Benagil cave swim.

The 2 photos below from the right entrance of the Benagil sea cave – again big waves and big boulders…. not that easy to photograph

Other large Caves in Algarve Portugal

During our Algarve cave tours, we also visited 2 other large caves.

The cave that I call The Tunnel had 2 large entrances, one at each side. It was the most accessible one and looked more like a tunnel. I believe the name is Lanchão do Ladrão but I am really not sure. I can’t find sources to confirm.

It had a lot of light:

Paradise Cave Algarve

When I discussed with the owner of the boat company before my tour, he told me his favorite cave in Algarve Portugal was the one he called ‘Paradise cave’ under the Alfanzina lighthouse.

You can see the entrance in the pictures below. With mid tide, the entrance was not very big, and the pilot had to enter at the right moment considering the waves. Plus, getting out was also exhilarating.

Paradise Cave Algarve

It is a very difficult cave to photograph as it is all in height. You can see it a bit better in the video. But I think I prefer the Benagil Sea Cave.

Coastline and other Algarve Caves

As you can see below on the coastline pictures, there are many many sea caves in Algarve Portugal. It is quite impressive to discover it from the sea. I strongly recommend doing one of the Algarve caves tours by boat to discover the unique coastline!

Our pilot also took us inside smaller caves. Sometimes you can’t even turn around, you have to reverse. Below are a few examples. The Boat trips Algarve from Benagil Beach normally take you around to around 20 caves.

On the Algarve boat trip I did from Benagil beach, they took us all the way to Marinha Beach which is considered one of the most beautiful beaches in Portugal .

It is famous for its double arch: the “Arcos de Marinha” and other sea stacks:

PLANNING TIPS – Boat Trips Algarve Caves

How to visit the algarve caves and benagil.

  • You can Take a boat from Benagil Beach (which is what I did). You can see below how to get there and my review of the tour
  • Or you can do a boat tour directly from Portimao – it will cover the same but you don’t have to drive 🙂 – Check out Boat, program and price  or you can  book a private tour to enjoy it even more
  • Or you can leave from Albufeira – (not all boats enter the cave) –  See options
  •   CHECK ALL TOURS TO BENAGIL COASTLINE

How to get to Benagil Beach

  • Benagil is a small beach located east of Portimao, near the town of Benagil
  • Not far from the famous Marinha Beach and its rock formations
  • 30min drive from Portimao
  • Parking is limited near the beach and the road quite steep – be ready for a little bit of walking up and down

The Algarve coast is included in my travel guides to help you plan your Portugal road trip :

Selection of my Boat Trip to the Algarve Caves

I selected the Taruga Benagil Tours Company  for the following reasons:

  • They departed Benagil beach reducing the time on water
  • They had been operating this tour for a long time
  • They had excellent reviews on the web

What I booked:

  • Taruga offers boat tours of 1h or more with groups of roughly 10 persons
  • However I wanted the freedom to move in the boat, take pictures and also be able to turn around if it was too much for our sea-sickness – so I contacted them for a private tour.
  • Plus Ana took the time to discuss with me over emails. She told me the best time was at mid-tide and when the weather was clear. She checked the time and the forecast to pick me the best time. Loved it! Talk about customer service… 🙂

Taruga Benagil tours

I paid entirely for my Algarve Boat tour and this is my own opinion based on one experience in October 2016

  • Check in was smooth
  • They are quite busy so the departure time can slide slightly but it is fun to watch them turn the boats around for the next groups. Great way to stay fit.
  • The pilot was great and even though the entry to some cave seems unpossible I can complete trust in him. I never felt in danger
  • Plus the pilot was fun
  • All the boats from the company I have seen seems to be in good condition
  • I had a wonderful time!
  • Turning around to take picture, I did get a little bit of sea-sickness with those big waves, but by focussing on the amazing scenery it went well

Hi, My husband and I are currently in the Algarve and would love to visit the Benegal Cave. We have a car so can just go straight to the beach but how much should we expect to pay for a boat tour if we just show up there? Thanks!

Are there any boat trips from Lagos to the Benagil cave?

April 22, 2018 at 8:22 PM

Hi Leslie I think Seabooking.com may do it depending on the date and if there are enough people. Have a great trip!

April 23, 2018 at 1:14 PM

Thanks Clair for the Info. You are right, seabookings does do a boat trip to Benagil but it’s 1:45 mins which I think will not do justice to the visit to the caves. On your blog when I clicked on “boats, programme and price” from Portimao, it led me to getyourguide.com which offers a 2 hr ride to Benagiland other caves. However I can’t see any reviews for them on the web. Any feedback on this company/website?

April 23, 2018 at 8:43 PM

Getyourguide is a booking platform only. I use them whenever I look for a tour. You can see the ratings given by many people who actually took the tour and read their comments on the page.

If you’re planning to visit the Algarve, you’ve probably heard about the Benagil Cave, one of the most famous landmarks of Portugal .

If you’re wondering what exactly is the Benagil Cave, or how to get there in 2023, then you’ve come to the right place!

In this complete guide to visiting the Benagil Cave, we will go over everything you need to know to plan your trip to Portugal and make sure you can properly visit it.

The Ultimate Guide to Visiting Benagil Cave

What is the benagil cave, where is the benagil cave, how to get to the sea cave, best time to visit the benagil caves, expert tips for visiting the benagil sea cave, where to stay near benagil cave, best places to see in algarve after visiting benagil, faq: quick answers & information about benagil cave.

During my recent trip to Portugal, I went to the south coast, also known as the Algarve. The coast is absolutely stunning, and there is plenty of beautiful places to see around. One of the most epic locations in the Algarve is the Benagil Cave. If you don’t know what it is, don’t worry – I had no idea before actually starting to plan my trip.

Let’s get started with the first part of this guide.

The Benagil Cave, also known as Algar de Benagil in Portuguese, is a geological marvel. The Benagil Cave is an open-sky cave, with a dream-like sand beach inside.

When you’re inside the cave, on the beach, you can see the sky through the opening on the top of the cave. Similarly, when you’re above the cave, on the cliffs, you can see the beach below through the hole.

benagil cave from inside

The cave boasts a warm orange tone, that contrasts nicely with the blue of the sea. The cave is only accessible by sea, and that’s part of its charm.

You might wonder how was the cave created. Well, the cliffs are made of limestone and, years after years, the waves and wind have created the cave, while the rainwater has made the opening on top of the cave. The Benagil Cave is more than 20 million years old.

You can visit it in 2 different ways: from the cliffs above while hiking on the Algarve coast; or you can go inside the cave. Whatever way you’ll choose is up to you! Keep reading below to learn exactly how you can visit it.

The Benagil Cave is located in the south of Portugal, in the region called Algarve.

benagil caves location

  • From Lagos : To go to the Benagil Cave from Lagos , which is one of the major towns in the Algarve, it will take you around 40min of driving.
  • From Lisbon : If you’re going from Lisbon to Benagil Caves, it’s a 2,5 hours drive.
  • From Lagos: You can also take a bus from Lagos. There seems to be only one main bus from Lagos to Benagil, leaving twice a day. The first departure is at 9:25 am, and the second one is at 3 pm. Check out the times here: Algarve bus times .
  • From Lisbon : You can take the bus from Lisbon. It takes around 3 hours and costs 20 euros. The buses are pretty comfy, they have air conditioning and toilets. Check out the bus times on this page : enter “Lisbo Oriente” or “Lisboa Sete Rios” as the departure point and choose “Lagoa” as a destination. Be careful, you need to choose “LAGOA” and not “LAGOS”. Lagoa is 15min away from Benagil, while Lagos is 45min away. Once you arrive in Lagoa, you can take a taxi that will take you to Benagil Beach.

✈️ By plane : Faro airport is the nearest airport, located only 62km from Benagil. From there, you can either rent a car, take a taxi (but this will cost you), or choose public transportation.

  • Bus transfers from the airport : reach Benagil in 2,5 hours taking the 56 Aerobus (Faro Airport – Lagoa) and then the bus line 110  to Monte Carvoeiro for 10-12 euros. There are also private shuttles that will take you there in only 45 minutes for 25 euros, you can check them here .
  • Taxi from the airport : will take only 45 minutes to reach Benagil, but it will cost about 65-85 euros.

praia da corredoura

Once you arrive close to the Benagil Cave, in Benagil Beach, for example, you’re not totally done yet. You still need to find out how to get to the cave.

There are actually several ways you can get to the cave. I will list them below:

1. Walk to the Cave

While you will not be able to go inside the cave by walking, you can go above it. All along the Algarve coast, you’ll find walking paths on the cliffs.

I recommend starting your day at the Cao Raivoso beach . Then, you can hike your way towards the caves, which you will reach in 10 minutes. Along the way, you’ll walk on the cliffs above Praia da Corredoura, a beautiful protected beach.

The Benagil Cave is also pretty impressive from above. There are wooden fences around it, which I do not recommend crossing, as the area around the hole is pretty unstable – cross at your own risk. From above, you’ll see the beach below, which makes for a pretty unique sight!

benagil cave from the cliffs

2. Drive to Benagil

Same as walking, driving will not get you inside the cave, but it will get you on the cliffs above. Head for Benagil Caves with your GPS, and then head out from the main road on a dirt lane. This will get you very close to the cave. Simply park your car somewhere, and go for a short walk 🙂

3. Swim to Benagil

Swimming is the first way to get inside the cave. The swimming distance is around 200 meters at low tide.

Start at Praia de Benagil (Benagil beach), swim along the cliff for 1 minute, and you’ll soon see the cave after turning around the bend of the cliff. Then you have to swim 100 meters to the cave.

how to swim to benagil cave

Swimming to the cave is the easiest at low tide. In any case, low or high tide, swimming along cliffs remains dangerous. Do not attempt if you’re not an experienced swimmer, and please do not attempt to go with kids.

Now, if you’re a terrible swimmer like me, swimming is not really an option. Check out the following options if you still want to visit inside the cave, while being safe.

4. Rent a Stand-Up Paddle or a Kayak

If you’re not confident in your swimming abilities, don’t worry! You can rent a SUP (stand-up paddle) from the Benagil Beach, and paddle your way inside the cave. It will cost you around 20€ for one board.

If you don’t like paddling or if you’re afraid of carrying your things on a stand-up paddle, you can prefer to rent a kayak on a beach nearby. It will make your experience a whole better as you can fit your bags in the kayak, and this will be way safer for your belongings than on the stand-up paddle.

You can rent a kayak in Benagil Beach: this will cost around 30€ per hour.

Here’s the best paddle/kayak tour you can book for your visit to the caves: From Albufeira: Benagil Tour by Kayak or SUP

5. Go on a Boat Tour

The last option to visit the Benagil Caves is to go on a boat tour. This is by far the most popular way to get to the caves, and you’ll have no difficulty finding a tour.

benagil cave drone view

2019 update : boats are no longer authorized to disembark on the beach. They have to stay at sea, away from the beach. Some boats allow you to go in the water and swim to the beach.

If you choose to do so, you’ll have to go early morning. The area gets crowded pretty quick, and boats are queuing up to enter the caves. If you don’t go early enough, your boat won’t be able to stay long enough at the cave for you to swim to it.

Benagil is not the only destination for boat tours. Rather, you will go along the Algarve coast, and you’ll discover the many caves of the region. Check out Taruga Benagil Tours ; they’ll take you to 20 different caves, for around 18€.

seagul in corredoura beach

Have you chosen how you’ll discover the Benagil Cave Algarve? If not or if you can’t do any of the above, you should know there’s one last option to visit the caves in-depth: using your drone!

If you have a drone with you while visiting Portugal, you can use your drone to see the caves from above, and experience them through your smartphone screen (or even better, 3D glasses if you have a pair!)

As you may already know, Algarve is a top summer destination in Europe thanks to its beautiful beaches and very pleasant weather. But because of the crowds, summer is certainly not the best time of the year to visit if you need relaxation and calm.

For me, the best time to go to Benagil Cave and enjoy this marvel is in spring (April – June) or autumn (September – October) . There are fewer tourists than in July and August, and the weather is still appropriate for swimming as temperatures are between 18°C and 35°C.

Nevertheless, if you decide to spend your summer vacations in the Algarve, you should know that the boat or kayak excursions to the caves are quickly taken over. It is highly recommended to book in advance.

If you’re in the last steps of planning your trip to the Algarve and the Benagil Cave, I’ve listed below several tips that will help you during your adventure:

  • plan in advance : the worst thing you want to do is go to the Benagil Cave without any planning, thinking you’ll just wing it. If you do so, you might leave the place without having experienced it the way you wanted to. Make sure to plan correctly what you want to do, in which way you want to visit, and at what times.
  • wake up early : this is true especially if you’re visiting in summer. The cave is the most popular attraction in the Algarve, and it gets crazily packed during the day – boats line up in front of the entry, and people battle for a spot on the beach inside the cave. Wake up early, and visit the caves first thing in the morning to have the best experience possible. Use the rest of the day to visit some less famous locations in the area.

cave in algarve portugal

  • pack your GoPro or waterproof camera : it’s rather hard to bring camera gear inside the cave (you can with a kayak), so if you want to take photos inside the cave, the best bet is to pack your waterproof camera. It’ll be easy to carry it when swimming to the cave from the beach, from the boat, or while paddling on the stand-up paddle.
  • book your activity as soon as possible : if you’re thinking of going to the cave with a stand-up paddle, a kayak, or a boat, you need to book it as soon as possible. The Algarve is a pretty popular region, and it gets pretty crowded. Save yourself some troubles, and book early. You’ll have peace of mind when coming to the spot, with your mean of transportation to the cave already booked.
  • check the tides : if you plan to swim, it’s best to visit at low tide, as it will be much easier to swim to the cave.

The Algarve is one of the most visited regions in Portugal and the Benagil Caves are one of its top attractions. So whatever your travel style and budget, you’ll definitely find something that will best suit you. Below, find out my top 3 recommendations close to the caves:

💰 Budget – Olive Hostel Lagos : Located in the center of Lagos, this hostel is certainly not the closest to the caves, but it is a very good value for money. It’s also a smart choice if you’re traveling Algarve, not only Benagil. Clean, comfortable with a nice decoration and all commodities, you will feel like in a hotel.

✅ Comfy – O Quintal Guesthouse : Located a 15min drive from Benagil beach and a 2min walk from Carvoeiro Beach, this bed & breakfast offers everything you could need. Air conditioning, a terrace, a kitchen, an outdoor swimming pool, etc. You will feel at home there.

⭐️ Luxury – Rocha Brava Village Resort : Located only a 10min drive from the caves, this 4-star-resort has 3 swimming pools, several tennis courts, a gym, and more. Rooms are pretty well furnished, each of them has everything to be independent (washing machine, dishwasher, microwave…). The perfect luxury choice!

Not satisfied with this selection? Find more options in this dedicated guide of the 20+ Best Hotels in Algarve . If you want to know more about the best neighborhoods where to stay in Algarve, check here .

While the Benagil Cave is the most famous thing to see in the Algarve, there are plenty of other beautiful things to discover on the south coast of Portugal.

Right next to the caves, you’ll find the secret beach – Cao Raivoso . You can drive there, park your car on the cliffs, and then start your day hike up on the Algarve cliffs.

benagil cave from above

Among all the amazing things to see on the Algarve coast, here are a few:

  • Ponta da Piedade
  • Student beach
  • Camilo Beach
  • Albandeira Beach
  • Tavira Castle

You can also check out this post for a list of all the incredible locations in the Algarve: 36 best places in Algarve

Find below a quick sum-up of this post thanks to these answers to the questions you might have about Portugal’s Benagil.

When is the best time to visit the Benagil caves? The caves can be visited any time of the year and boat trips are also available all year round, but I strongly recommend going in May-June or September-October. In winter, it will be more complicated to swim because of the temperature of the water, but the more adventurous among you can try.

Where to sleep around Benagil?  The best place you could stay in if you want to be close to the sea caves is O Quintal Guesthouse. It’s a comfy hotel not too expensive located on the Carvoeiro beach at only 15min from the sea caves.

Is it possible to visit Benagil on your own or do you have to book a tour? You can visit it by yourself easily by hiking or driving, but this won’t take you inside the cave. To get inside, I recommend booking a tour (either a boat tour, a kayak tour, or a paddle-SUP tour as you prefer).

Click here to find the best Benagil cave tours on Get Your Guide .

Where to park around the Benagil cave? Due to the limited parking around Benagil beach, it is recommended to leave your car in the large parking lot located 300 meters from the beach when coming from Lagos. The place is very touristic and well indicated.

Where to eat around Benagil cave? Several restaurants are located near the sea cave of Benagil, here are some recommendations:

  • O Pescador : located on the main road, not far from the parking, this place serves seafood, fish, and gourmet cuisine in a nice trendy setting with a view of the cliffs.
  • Casa Lamy : directly at the beach, this restaurant serves typical Portuguese food , grilled seafood, salads, and more for a good price.
  • O Litoral : cozy restaurant near the beach, serving local products including squid, monkfish, and other grilled fish.

What to pack for a cruise to the Benagil cave? Bring warm clothes. Even if it feels warm on land, at sea the temperatures are cooler. Add to that the speed of the boat and the splashes that could get you wet… It is wise to take a warm garment or a windbreaker. Don’t forget sunglasses and sunscreen, as the sun reflects on the sea, which can sometimes be annoying.

I hope this guide helped you plan your trip to Portugal and the Algarve, and that you’ll include the Benagil Caves in your schedule! Do you still have any questions about the cave after reading this guide? Ask in the comments below, I always reply!

Hi, we are plan on mid of December to visit Benagil Cave. My I know the weather is suitable

Hi Thereseas! Temperatures in December vary between 10 to 20°C (feeling can be cooler due to the sea wind), and access to Benagil is usually possible if the sea is calm. You can check the Benagil weather forecast here for more details. Have a nice trip to Benagil 🙂

I have plan to visit Benagil cave on This August. I have a question. How many days are there in August when it is impossible to visit a cave by kayaking due to high waves?

Hi Sangyoung! Unfortunately, we can’t forecast the temperature and sea level with certainty, yet. So I can’t give you the right answer. However, you can check here the surf forecast in Benagil in August, based on the 2020 and 2021 data. According to it, you can see that the waves shouldn’t be too high between the 7th to the 17th of August. But again, as we can’t be sure about that, I recommend having a plan B if you’re worried. I hope you’ll have a blast there 😉

Hi thanks for your post about Benagil Cave. We will be flying into the Faro airport around 2 pm and will get a rental car. I’ve looked for kayak/SUP rentals but I have not found anything that we can book for late afternoon/early evening. We are short on time and would not be able to drive back to the area again. Do you think they will still be renting down on Benagil beach?

Hi Susan, sorry for my late reply! If I remember, kayak renting on Benagil Beach are available until 4-5pm, as the tour lasts about 1,5-2 hours. But I’m not very sure, so I recommend booking in advance at a time you’ll be able to be there on Benagil Kayaks or Secret Algarve . Don’t hesitate to contact the companies before booking, they’ll be able to give you the right info.

Hi Kevin, This is literally the best post, with the exact location, very helpful. I am planning to go there in the summer, and I am planning to go there during the night. Do you have any experience with getting to the cave in the night? I would like to go to the cave by SUP, swimming is ok, but i prefer not doing it during the night 🙂 Thanks Gonzalo

Hi Gonzalo, What a great plan! Unfortunately, we haven’t experienced Benagil at night, so we can’t give you relevant info. But we’d love to get your feedback if you succeed doing it!

Hello Germana! Did you find anything yet? You can try booking online on Secret Algarve , you can book from 8am, or give them a call to secure a 7am booking. Otherwise best way is to go to the beach a day before, go to a rental stand, and secure a booking for the next day. Enjoy your trip!

Hi! I have a question. We will be traveling with luggage. We wanted to stay in Carvoerio since that seems to be the closest town. Will luggage fit on the bus or should we take a train to Lagoa then taxi to carvoeiro?

Hello Ashley, most bus companies have big buses with dedicated luggage storage space. You can usually see photos of the buses beforehand (like for Eva Transportes ), this will give you a good idea.

Such an amazing and well-written blog post! I had a few questions. As of 2020, can you go inside the cave with a boat tour? I don’t want to swim at all so are there still any boat tours that dock at the cave at all? Also, when you say go early, how early are we talking? The earliest tour I see is at 9am. Is there any way to get there earlier like 7 or 8am that doesn’t involve paddling or swimming? You can email me on [email protected] .

Thank you so much!!

Hello Danya, Thanks so much for the kind word! Glad you found this post helpful 🙂 No sadly there aren’t any boats docking in the cave anymore, as it’s been forbidden by the local government. Boats still get inside the cave, but they will stay away from the beach, in the sea. You can jump from the boat to get to the beach, though, and it will be a small swim (30seconds). I had the same problem because I wanted to get inside the cave with my photo gear, but sadly going there with a boat is just not the option :/ And you’re right, the earliest tours are around 9am! Sorry I couldn’t be of more help, Best, Kevin

We will be in Lagoa for 2 days, March 19 and 20, and want to visit Benagil Cave. How is the sea if we take a boat tour? Would it be too rough to take a small boat tour? Which tour company you would recommend? Please email me your responses to me at [email protected] .

We had a hard time with the SUP because it was our first time and the waves were a bit choppy, but Ana stayed with us the whole time while Bruno went ahead with the kayaks. Ana was very helpful and made us feel comfortable and have fun even though we fell in the water when we tried to stand up. It was great getting out of our campervan and into the water ☀️ Read more Written April 4, 2024
