In the four decades since James Taylor and Carole King helped launch each other’s storied careers, the notion of someday recapturing that magic never completely faded.

“Every time we would run into each other at a benefit or at an event … we’d say we have to get the band back together, get that band back together and do some touring before the chance slips away,” Taylor said in a recent interview.

On Monday, Taylor and King announced dates for the U.S. leg of their much-anticipated “Troubadour Reunion” tour. The tour, marking the 40th anniversary of the pair’s breakthrough shows, will launch May 7 in Portland, Ore.

As previously announced, the tour will begin overseas in Melbourne, Australia, on March 26.

“In a sense we started our solo careers sharing a band, sharing a stage, we did a show at the Troubadour in Los Angeles that really sort of broke both of us out of the box and established our careers,” Taylor said.

King played on Taylor’s 1970 “Sweet Baby James” album and Taylor on King’s 1971 “Tapestry” album.

“We started performing, originally she was in my band, and then I increasingly encouraged her to sing her own songs,” said Taylor. “She was used to being a writer, and to having other people do her tunes.”

King, in fact, had already written 22 Top 40 hits, including Aretha Franklin’s “(You Make Me Feel Like a) Natural Woman.”

“Tapestry,” released in 1971, sold more than 25 million copies worldwide and made King the first woman to win four Grammys in a single year.

Taylor, 61, has won five Grammys during his career. Both Taylor and King, 67, are members of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and the Songwriters Hall of Fame.

The idea for a reunion tour had been brewing for years, Taylor said.

“Finally, two years ago we played at a sort of anniversary celebration for (the Troubadour), with the original band and that was so great we decided to take it on the road.”

The tour will reunite not only Taylor and King, but key members of their original band, including guitarist Danny Kortchmar, drummer Russ Kunkel and bassist Lee Sklar.

While the shows will be at larger venues such as the Hollywood Bowl or Madison Square Garden, the performers hope to recapture at least some of the intimacy of those early Troubadour days, in part by staging the concerts in the round. Taylor said he and King will remain on the stage together throughout the show.

“I think we’ll do two sets, both of us will be on stage the whole time, either singing backup for each or playing behind the other. We’ll sort of skip back and forth, do a song of hers, a song of mine, but we’ll stay on the stage,” he said.

“It’s just going to be a blast.”

Carole King and James Taylor at The Troubadour “Live”

Carole King and James Taylor Live at The Troubadour

Carole King and James Taylor at The Troubadour “live” has been re-released by Craft Records. This iconic album is now available in 24/96KHz high-res audio and 180 Gram Vinyl!

If you ever wanted to hear a performance that has the same venue, musicians, and much of the same songs that this enigmatic couple performed in 1970, then this album is a superb example of this. Carole King and James Taylor go back to their roots, 36 years before they were signed to their first record label. This is an album for fans of the music of a particular time in history when the world was in chaos and musicians wrote their songs to both ease the pain and have a platform to talk about their viewpoints.

The Live recording features session musicians Danny Kortchmar , Leland Sklar , and Russ Kunkel and just happen to be the very same musicians that played these sets in 1970.! Leland is a Bass hero of mine as well as a beard Aficionado!

I love when artists can bring a band back together and produce the same magic that they did when they were much younger. There is just an enchantment that occurs when people get together that can musically flow and shift cooperatively and in perfect unison.  Every one of these musicians is a master of their craft and this album is another example of this mastery.

While the album is live it does have a coziness that reminds me of a small club type of show until the crowd starts cheering at the end of songs. Then you know you are at a somewhat larger event. And do yourself a favor and listen to James’s talk to the crowd between songs, He says some downright hilarious things!

James’ vocals are on point, as he does not miss a beat while hitting every note perfectly considering his age. His suave and smooth vocal tone comes through scrupulously. Here he has been recorded at center stage while moving back within the depth of the soundstage mix — as it should be. The recording catches his voice without any sibilance or overly chesty bass characteristics. James’s guitar work has great acoustic body and string detail while setting beautifully in the mix with the other instruments.

Carole’s’ vocals are a little more aged and raspier but overall, she hits her notes and puts on a great performance. Being a vocalist is one of the hardest things to keep at a top-notch level when we age . Being that she is some 36 years older she does a fantastic job. Songs like Will You Love Me Tomorrow really show off her voice in all its glory as well as being one of my favorite songs on this album. It is just a touching song and Taylor does a remarkable job of backing vocals on this track.

Carole King and James Taylor at The Troubadour

Russ’s drums come through the mix very well and stay in their firm location behind the band driving the rhythm while the bass drum is snappy and dynamic. The toms on his kit display a great sense of depth and tone to them and stay with the set as they sweep across the full soundstage. Songs like Country Road and Machine Gun Kelly possess the full band playing and the drums sound dynamic, with great impact and weight. The cymbals for the most part are detailed and true to their sound, although at times they can get a little splashy and disconnected from the music. But the overall drum presentation on the album is quite good.

Dannys’ guitar work on this album is first-rate and although there are a lot of singer-songwriter songs played here, he does a tremendous job at filling in electric guitar parts where they work best. Country Road , Machine Gun Kelley , and Smackwater Jack showcase the talent of Danny’s guitar work). His hum bucking guitar tone cuts through the mix and sounds soulful and true.

Lelands’ bass guitar work acknowledges him to be a true legend of his craft. When the music calls for it, his bass comes through with authority and weight while never getting chesty or boomy. However, there are a few songs like Carolina On My Mind that I would have liked to hear Leland bring out the acoustic bass to get a more acoustical type of sound to go with Jame’s guitar. Nonetheless, songs like It’s Too Late put me back in my place affirming Leland’s bass sound is right on! I guess one of the kings of bass guitar knows a lot more than I do!!!

Sound Quality Analysis:

While touching on a little of this above I wanted to expand on my thoughts on this album’s sound quality. My Analysis here is based solely on the 24/96KHz high-resolution files played off of Qobuz. The high-resolution version of this recording has been finessed and re-mastered by the good people at Craft Recordings . While I have heard the original CD version of this album the revisited version is more centered on the instrumentalists. The vocals and instruments seem to spring out from a more dead silent background. Strings have a bit more shimmer and detail while the bass response is much more dynamic and punchier.

Although soundstage width is not this album’s strong suit, the stage is mostly set from speaker to speaker without a whole lot of sound coming from past the speaker’s boundaries. (Remembering the early days of stereo ). What width it does have allows the instruments to emanate within their own locational space and nicely separated.

Imaging is good on this album and vocals are only off-center when the vocalist is off-centered on the stage. Interestingly, the electric bass and guitar are where they should be whether on the right or left, and do not permeate directly from the speakers but their own space between them. That tells me that the recording and mixing were done right. One of my main problems is when an album is mixed to where you can tell that there was no time taken to position the instruments of a live event properly in the mix. Whether it’s a live or studio album there needs to be time taken to get the image localized right to fit the performance.

If you are a fan of older 70’s rock and folk music and love the soul and passion that these performers had then owe it to yourself to give this album a spin. Whether it’s the 96/24KHz files on Qobuz o r the 180-gram vinyl through Craft Recordings. This is a true masterpiece of music that celebrates a time in history that many music lovers adore.

Carole King & James Taylor - Live at the Troubadour - 2.0 download review

Carole King and James Taylor - Live at the Troubadour

When James Taylor arrived in Los Angeles as a 21 year old rising singer-songwriter in 1969 he met songwriter Carole King, a recent New York transplant. Six years his senior, King had already penned a decade-long string of chart-topping hits, including “The Loco-Motion,” “Will You Love Me Tomorrow,” and “(You Make Me Feel Like) A Natural Woman,” among many others.

Their friendship deepened when he invited King to play in his band at the Troubadour during a six-night residency he had booked at the venue. Although King preferred her common role behind the scenes, Taylor urged her to perform her own material between his sets, leading her into the spotlight as she subsequently released her solo debut a year later. Meanwhile, Taylor found his commercial breakthrough with “Sweet Baby James,” and they co-headlined the Troubadour in 1970.

For this recording the duo reunited at the Troubadour 37 years later joined by the same musicians who supported them during their original feature show back in 1970. Across the 15 tracks on this live album, guitarist Danny Kortchmar, bassist Leland Sklar, and drummer Russ Kunkel back King and Taylor as they play a selection from their vast canon of collective hits. Originally released in 2010, the widely acclaimed, gold-certified title debuted at No. 4 on the Billboard 200 and spawned a record-breaking Troubadour Reunion Tour, which found King and Taylor selling out arenas in North America, Australia, New Zealand and Japan.

Craft Recordings, a label that focuses on high quality master recordings, has just reissued Carole King and James Taylor’s bestselling album “Live at the Troubadour” as a 180-gram 2-LP vinyl debut. Of greatest interest to high resolution audio collectors, the historic recording has been reissued for the first time as a 96kHz / 24-bit stereo hi-res download which had been previously sold as a CD/DVD bundle. As a fundraiser to help support the Los Angeles based Troubadour’s reopening after the devastating effects of the pandemic, an exclusive numbered commemorative poster signed by poster artist DKNG, as well as a very limited number of posters also signed by Carole King and James Taylor are available only at the Craft Recordings webstore.

The album opens with a duet that gently disperses across the stereo field as Taylor’s voice melodically sings “Blossom.” The blend between his acoustic guitar and King’s piano comfortably falls snuggly underneath his rich and clear vocals. While there is a strong central focus, the ambience lightly flows across and behind the stereo channels. With a very natural sound, the mix contains a smidge of treatment from the effects rack allowing the acoustic instruments to purely shine.

One can absolutely hear the room, feeling a sense of being present at the club during their performance as King sings and plays “So Far Away.” Dynamics are good, offering a real sense of sitting in the room with the audience spread widely across the left and right channels.

For some high resolution audio fans, the real magic will happen as the band kicks in on Taylor’s impassioned song “Machine Gun Kelly.” The solid and full bass fills out the bottom, adding punch to the tracks as it locks in with the strong drum work. The imaging of the stereo field becomes wider with the symbols and tom toms spreading out, along with adjustments to placement of instruments across the stereoscape. Some light effects are added to the crunchy electric guitar which dynamically punches through with fantastic zestyness.

Still the integration of the audience with the performance takes listeners right into the club on King’s “It’s Too Late.” As the band elevates and cools off the complement of the audience is delightful. This kind of interactive characteristic is often omitted from live recordings. Yet, having captured and included it is a most welcome addition that provides such a natural feel to this wonderful recording. As one would expect, the high resolution download files truly sound fantastic with no noticeable distortion and plenty of breathing room. A stand-out on this track for me is the biting guitar solo with its ever present sound, followed by the soft and free-flowing piano solo.

For those who intimately know both Taylor and King’s work, these renditions offer a sweet take on their classic hits with some minor stylistic adjustments. Yet, from my perspective, it is the interplay between these two longtime friends that makes this collaboration so special for fans. The set has been masterfully recorded and presented with a pure audio quality that comes through with distinct clarity. While I have reviewed the high resolution audio files here, which are available at various download sites, analog enthusiasts are sure to enjoy ample audiophile quality on the vinyl release too. Of course, for many long-time fans, the dazzling magic of this album is very likely “You’ve Got A Friend.” This King penned song is one of their most well-known and found on each of their respective solo albums from back in the day. They trade vocals throughout the tune as they move through the verses and harmonize on the choruses. Simply put, it is a very heartfelt piece that encapsulates the sentiment of this entire recording.

The album closest with one of my favorite songs by Taylor, titled “You Can Close Your Eyes.” The duo harmonizes over Taylor’s acoustic guitar finger picking, in a perfect modern folk way gently closing out a fabulous set of music.

Absolutely recommended for fans of either James Taylor or Carole King. Audiophiles will find this live recording to offer a real sense of being at the show, and depending on one’s preference, pick up either the hi-res digital download or limited edition 180g vinyl 2-LP set. Collectors of modern folk and fans of live performances will also find this a most worthy addition to their collection.

Carole King, James Taylor Perform ‘You’ve Got a Friend,’ ‘It’s Too Late,’ ‘Sweet Baby James’ in New Concert Doc Trailer

By Althea Legaspi

Althea Legaspi

Carole King and James Taylor perform their own hits — alongside harmonizing on each other’s songs — in the new trailer for concert documentary Carole King & James Taylor: Just Call Out My Name . The film premieres on Jan. 2 at 9:00 p.m. ET via CNN and will livestream via CNNgo. It will be available on demand from Jan. 3 through Jan. 9 via cable and satellite providers, CNNgo, and CNN mobile apps.

The exclusive trailer includes archival photos from the first time they performed together in 1970 at the storied Troubadour, alongside King and Taylor being interviewed in July 2021 at the Southern New Hampshire University Arena in Manchester. The clip features setlist highlights from their 2010 Troubadour reunion tour, where they duet “It’s Too Late,” “Sweet Baby James,” and “You’ve Got a Friend.” King also delivers “So Far Away” and Taylor performs “Fire and Rain.”

Directed by Frank Marshall and commissioned by CNN Films and HBO Max, the documentary showcases previously unseen performance footage from their 1970 Troubadour concert debut, the pair reprising that show for the West Hollywood venue’s own 50th anniversary in 2007, and several full song performances from their 2010 reunion tour.

The documentary’s new interview with King and Taylor, coupled with their performances, highlight the camaraderie and chemistry radiating from their enduring music and lifelong friendship. They reflect on their collaborative relationship and share several stories about their songs, including “You’ve Got a Friend.” In the film, King explains the song “purely came through me.” Taylor first heard King play the then new song at soundcheck before their debut Troubadour show together, and they share how he came to cover it. Band members of the Section — Danny Kortchmar, Russ Kunkel, and Lee Sklar — who backed the duo through all three concert eras are also interviewed, along with insight from musician/producer Peter Asher.

  • Carole King, James Taylor and the Original Band Celebrate the "Troubadour's" 50th Anniversary

with a Special Three-Night Engangement for Charity

LOS ANGELES, CA - The Troubadour was honored to celebrate its 50th anniversary with a return three-night engagement, November 28, 29 and 30, 2007, with two shows per night at 7 and 10pm from two of its most beloved singer/songwriters, Carole King and James Taylor. The special performances featured songs from their 1969 debut Troubadour shows that helped propel them both to the world stage. This historic show marked Carole's debut as a solo artist. She is arguably the most successful and most revered female songwriter in pop music history.

In the last 50 years, The Troubadour has been a Los Angeles musical institution to countless artists and music fans alike. It helped launch the careers of the Eagles, Linda Ronstadt, Jackson Browne and Elton John, just to name a few. "In these walls there is a deep musical history that spans many generations. To have Carole and James back to help celebrate the last 50 years and to bring in the next 50...is quite an honor," says Brian Smith, the Troubadour's booker.

"When James asked me if I wanted to join him for the 50th Anniversary of the Troubadour I thought, what a perfect opportunity to celebrate our longtime friendship and shared musical history," notes King.

Carole and James reunited with guitarist Danny "Kootch" Kortchmar, drummer Russ Kunkel and bassist Lee Sklar, famous in their own right as The Section. There were two performances each night with ticket proceeds benefiting charities including Natural Resources Defense Council, MusiCares, Alliance for the Wild Rockies and the Los Angeles Regional Foodbank, a member of America's Second Harvest-The Nation's Food Bank Network.

LOS ANGELES (AP) — He’s gone to Carolina in his mind and on tour for much of 2024.

Not long after his 76th birthday, James Taylor & His All-Star Band will take their show on the road in the United States, hitting 24 cities for 31 shows in five months.

Over Zoom from his studio in western Massachusetts, Taylor tells The Associated Press “It’s been September since the last time I’ve been out.” That, he says, is “a long time for me.”

The tour kicks off in Los Angeles at the Hollywood Bowl on May 29 and ends at Wolf Trap Filene Center in Vienna, Virginia, on Sept. 15.

The tour hits Salt Lake City; Morrison, Colorado; Kansas City, Missouri; St. Louis; Highland Park, Illinois; Noblesville, Indiana; Nashville, Tennessee; North Little Rock, Arkansas; Thackerville, Oklahoma; Clarkston, Michigan; Darien Center, New York; Syracuse, New York; Bethel Woods, New York; Bangor, Maine; Gilford, New Hampshire; Lenox, Massachusetts; Philadelphia; Wantagh, New York; Saratoga Springs, New York; Bridgeport, Connecticut; Burgettstown, Pennsylvania, and Boston.

This interview has been edited for clarity and brevity.

AP: Before the continental U.S. tour, you’re headed to Japan, the Philippines, Australia, New Zealand and Hawaii. What keeps it interesting?

TAYLOR: The audience, always. The event itself has never failed to supply the motivation and the energy that is required. You know, it’s very compelling to go a great distance and to find a crowd of people that have bought tickets to come see me and the band play again.

Over time, it’s something you learn to do, to keep your strength up, keep your health... also, I don’t do more than a couple of shows in a row without a day off. I’ll do more than that if I’m in one town, but generally speaking, we pace ourselves now.

AP: That’s good advice.

TAYLOR: I definitely burned myself out a few times.

AP: You’re performing at Tanglewood, in your home state of Massachusetts, 50 years since you first performed there. What significance does it hold?

TAYLOR: I was trying to figure out whether or not it was 50 years or 50 shows that I’ve been playing at Tanglewood, and it turns out it’s both. 1974 was the first time I played there. It averages out to one a year, although at one point we skipped a whole decade.

We had an episode where one of my crew members, in a fit of pique, drove a truck across the Tanglewood lawn and made a mess of it. He was told he had to get the truck off the lawn because it had been raining and it was making an imprint on it. As we were breaking down after the show, he was driving out there to unload the mixing board and stuff. But he put it in reverse, stomped the accelerator and tore a great trough, a great furrow in the Tanglewood lawn. And they never asked me back. It was only when (my wife) Kim came along and resurrected my reputation that I was allowed to come back.

It’s been a great privilege... It’s turned out to be a great thing for me, to play Tanglewood every year.

AP: Does an anniversary like that — 50 years — allow you to reflect on your career?

TAYLOR: This is the time of life when you feel like you ought to get in touch with a lawyer and make a will. You see, the older generation, the people that were your friends and mentors, sort of checking out one by one . It is a time when you feel as though things are being summed up a little bit and you start thinking about, the whole thing as a totality. You know, a line from one of my songs, “Copperline,” is “I’m only living ‘til the end of the week,” and I think that really does describe me.

But, you know, it is a period of time when you look back and see the whole thing, it’s important not to internalize that idea of being a big deal. It’s important to focus on what it is that you do — and that thing as a craft that allows you to have your place in the world.

AP: What has that allowed you to learn?

TAYLOR: As time goes by, I think it’s wrong for people to judge other people and even to evaluate them, and yet it’s something we constantly do, and we can’t avoid it. But we should mitigate it by knowing that when we judge someone, we’ve got it wrong. They know who they are, and not we. But, of course, in a million ways, all day long, we evaluate ourselves and other people and it’s complicated. It’s not up to me determine what my ultimate position in popular culture turns out to be 50 years from now.

AP: That’s a value judgment, too.

TAYLOR: I see people selling the rights to their catalogs. That baby boom generation musical expression, which happened between ’62 and 1980, that sort of 20 years of amazing activity that happened, I was in the center of it and actually got my start in London with the Beatles . So, I had a real sense of this generational phenomenon that the music that I was part of, was a big feature in the landscape and we were communicating to each other. We invented a kind of music there. It was predicted by rhythm and blues and folk music. And those two resurgences sort of fueled it and supplied it. It was big.

You see those people now, being in my sort of age group generally, selling the rights to their catalogs and sort of evaluating what their life’s output was worth. You know, David Bowie ’s went for like 250 million. I think (Bob) Dylan ... got like 300 million... (Bruce) Springsteen is said to have gotten more than that, like half a billion or something. It’s sort of like monopoly money.

AP: What do you hope people take away from your live show, and are you working on a new album?

TAYLOR: I feel like I’ve got another one in me — sounds like an egg — but I’m writing a little bit.

And as to what I hope people take away from live performances, I hope they take away a sense of connection. You know, live music — the thing that I’m so attached to about it, why I can’t let it go — is that there’s something (that) happens when people come together for a couple of hours for two or three hours and have a sort of collective experience.

It’s indescribable. You prepare for it, but when it happens, it’s spontaneous and, in a way, unique. I love it when that happens, and it does most nights.

AP: Give us a call if you consider selling your catalog.

TAYLOR: If someone comes sniffing around, I’ll get in touch.
