The cover of the first new album in six years from British guitar hero Jeff Beck shows a megaphone with a finger on the trigger, ready to let it blast. It’s an immediate indication that 50 years into his career, Beck is not about to head quietly into that good night.

Indeed, the album is packed with songs, written by Beck and members of his current band, in which outrage at various political and social targets is palpable, emotions made all the more visceral by the scorching guitar work that’s been a hallmark of his music since he took over the lead guitar post in British Invasion band the Yardbirds from one Eric Clapton.

He’ll be drawing from the new album, “Loud Hailer,” and others across the varied turning points of a long and varied career when he takes the stage Wednesday at the Hollywood Bowl for a 50 th anniversary concert. Given his entry into the Yardbirds came in 1965, the “50 th anniversary” tag is applied somewhat loosely, although it was 1966 when the first Yardbirds album with  Beck aboard, “Having a Rave Up with the Yardbirds,” made its mark.

The reigning mood on “Loud Hailer” comes through in song titles such as the heavy rock workout “Thugs Club” (about political power brokers who pay no heed to the damage they inflict), the sublime and haunting ballad “Scared for the Children” (the legacy his generation is bequeathing to their offspring), the hard-driving rocker “The Revolution Will Be Televised” (frustration over technological distractions provided by television and video games) and the self-explanatory political rant in “O.I.L. (Can’t Get Enough of That Sticky).”

Time’s ripping by and people are not being brought to justice. People living on a high echelon, and they think they’re above it. — Jeff Beck

“There was deep concern about things in general that have been upsetting me, and the more I delved into it, the worse it was getting,” Beck, 72, said as he sank back into a corner bench sofa in the lounge of his West Hollywood hotel on Monday.

“I think it was my time to speak out. It definitely felt like I can’t deal with it any more. …  Time’s ripping by and people are not being brought to justice. People living on a high echelon, and they think they’re above it.”

Yet Beck isn’t consumed by vitriol or anomie.

Rock guitarist Jeff Beck drove a restored 1932 Ford to Mel's Drive-In in West Hollywood on Monday to take part in a book release event for the publication of his book "BeckO1," showcasing his dual passions for guitars and vintage cars. (Jay L. Clendenin/Los Angeles Times)

The album-closing “Shrine” includes the lyric “I’ll never lose my faith in rock and roll/Never let hate make a home in my soul.” It’s a song Beck refers to as “a ray of hope” to counter much of the anger and frustration he and his collaborators from the young British band Bones — singer Rosie Bones and rhythm guitarist Carmen Vandenberg, supplemented by the rhythm section of drummer Davide Sollazi and bassist Giovanni Pallotti drafted by album co-producer Filippo Cimatti— are expressing in other songs.

In conjunction with his new solo album, Beck and high-end literary publisher Genesis Publications have just issued “BeckO1,” a large-format coffee table book priced at $500 showcasing his dual lifelong passions for rock ’n’ roll — specifically electric guitars — and vintage cars.

The connection?

“America gave us the hot rod, the B-movie, the drive-in, rock ’n’ roll,” he said shortly before leaving his hotel, hopping in his immaculately restored 1932 Ford painted vibrant orange and driving down Sunset Boulevard to Mel’s Drive-In to a book release party. In line were about 50 people who had ordered copies of the book.

Among the crowd were a few celebrities, including actress Candy Clark, one of the stars of George Lucas’ 1973 breakthrough film “American Graffiti,” and George Harrison’s musician son, Dhani Harrison, both of whom spent time chatting with the evening’s honoree.

“Just about everything I was interested in was not in England,” he said. “My mother took me to the movies — that was in ’58, I think — and the support feature was ‘Hot Rod Gang.’ It was outrageous because they were racing along the curbs. My mum said, ‘No, we’ll come back when the main feature starts.’ I said, ‘No we won’t!’  Thanks, Mum!”

The text Beck has written to accompany the multiplicity of photos is often poignantly revealing, especially where he discusses his hardscrabble youth in postwar England.

“As a child, I liked building spaceships out of Oxo [beef bouillon] tins. I also used to make buildings by piling up some ancient deckchairs. … I knew where I was headed.”

It also taps his self-deprecating sense of humor. Accompanying a photo of himself with Rolling Stones guitarist Ron Wood, from a 1990s recording session at Wood’s house in Ireland with Elvis Presley’s venerated lead guitarist, Scotty Moore, Beck notes, “I started getting a bit too extravagant and Scotty said, ‘Cut that guy’s fingers off!’”

The Hollywood Bowl show is also slated to feature Aerosmith lead singer Steven Tyler, Czech rock keyboardist Jan Hammer, blues singer Beth Hart and an opening set from one of Beck’s own blues guitar heroes, Buddy Guy.

Over half a century, Beck said, if anything he’s become more committed to “keeping good rock ’n’ roll alive, and good blues. As Buddy will tell you, he’s sometimes in fear of the blues fading away. But I can tell you, when people go and see him, they won’t have any fear of it fading away. He’s still amazing. I think the resurgence of vinyl is encouraging as well. It means people have got a keen ear, and they’re attuned to quality sound.”

The people at Fender asked me what they could do to improve the guitar, and I said ‘Nothing.’ Just give me an in-the-box guitar from 1954, that’ll do. — Jeff Beck

Although Beck hasn’t generated as much public recognition over the years as other rock guitar gods such as Clapton, Jimi Hendrix and Led Zeppelin’s Jimmy Page, he’s widely regarded to be among the most talented to ever pick up the instrument. He’s a two-time inductee into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame — in 1992 as a member of the Yardbirds (the band that launched the careers of Beck, Clapton and Page), and again in 2009 for his solo career.

Rolling Stone’s 2011 ranking of the 100 Greatest Guitarists placed him at No. 5 (behind the Stones’ Keith Richards, Page, Clapton and, at No. 1, Hendrix.)

“Jeff is quite simply a ‘born’ guitarist,” fellow guitar master John McLaughlin writes in his foreword to “BeckO1,” after citing Beck as “my all-time favorite electric guitarist.”

“Not only does he have the mysterious talent that is innate,” McLaughlin continues, “he has not stopped evolving over the years. He has forged a unique and wonderful style of playing that is instantly recognizable. He has the most fluid style of playing I’ve ever heard.”

Beck’s goal over a lifetime playing music has been toward more human emotion, less reliance on any of the myriad technological gadgets available to him and other musicians.

“There are unlimited technical aids and stuff, which I’m not the slightest bit interested in,” he said. “I will be interested in quality reverbs, because if you want to get the sound that’s on ‘Scared for the Children,’ that’s a beautiful sounding reverb.

“Other than that, when you get the plug-in, you sound like everybody else,” he said. “I don’t like the idea of any other device covering up the touch, and they do that with the compression, and distortion covering up a multitude of sins. Also it gives you a cookie-cutter sound.”

What about all the advancements in guitar-making techniques in the six decades since pioneers of the instrument such as Leo Fender and Les Paul created the first generation of mass-produced electric guitars?

“The people at Fender asked me what they could do to improve the guitar, and I said ‘Nothing.’ Just give me an in-the-box guitar from 1954, that’ll do just fine,” he said with a hearty laugh. “They said ‘We need to add something to make it yours,’ so I said, ‘Just put a push button on/off switch or something.’ When you get something perfect, you don’t try to improve it.”

Jeff Beck Remains Six String Bad Ass On 50th Anniversary Tour (SHOW REVIEW)

  • By L. Paul Mann

For the second time in as many weeks a truly legendary pop music icon has made an appearance at the newly upgraded Chumash casino resort in Santa Ynez. Two weeks ago it was the inimitable Stevie Wonder who made an astounding two night sold out stop at the Samala Showroom inside the resort. Thursday night, August 11, Jeff Beck brought his guitar drenched 50th anniversary show to the same venue. Beck, who is arguably the greatest living rock guitarist, played nearly two hours for a very lucky sold out crowd of just over one thousand ecstatic fans. The show was even more remarkable considering that Beck had just played the 18,000 seat Hollywood Bowl the night before.

The English musician began his career as a guitarist in his teens, playing in a series of mostly R&B cover bands with some regional success. But it was in 1965 that Jeff Beck rose to international prominence as a member of the hugely successful pop rock group The Yardbirds. Led Zeppelin guitarist Jimmy Page recommended Beck as a replacement for original guitarist Eric Clapton. Later Page and Beck both played in the band. In the 1966 British film “Blow Up,” by then a young director named Michelangelo Antonioni, there is a scene where the main character in the film runs through a club where the Yardbirds were playing. In the brief sequence Beck and Page can be seen trading riffs on The Yardbirds remake of the Tiny Bradshaw blues classic “Train Kept A-Rollin”. Beck has been dubbed the “Guitarists Guitarist” and may be the most innovative of the triumvirate English rock icons to emerge from The Yardbirds.

jeffbeck2

The 72 year old master of guitar innovation came right out of the gate leading his masterful quartet of musicians with all guns blazing, launching straight into a song from Loud Hailer , his brand new album, the 17th of his solo career. The group opened with “The Revolution Will Be Televised” from the new album, that is a homage to musician, poet and social activist Gil Scott-Heron, and in fact, the album is probably the most politically oriented that Beck has ever recorded. He collaborated with two of the members of his touring band singer Rosie Bones and guitarist Carmen Vandenberg, known as Bones, while making the politically charged album. The gritty vocal style of Bones lends itself well to the fiery lyrics on the new release. She confused the audience a bit at the Samala showroom Thursday as she wandered about the back of the venue singing through a megaphone, without a spotlight.

Meanwhile, Beck and the band began wailing in a cacophony of sound and light on the main stage. As adulate fans stood to get a better look at the rock icon, few knew where the vocals were actually coming from. Bones disappeared into the darkness as the band launched into the second song, an instrumental hit song called “Freeway Jam” from Beck’s innovative 1975 album Blow By Blow . This fusion era highlighted Beck’s unique and innovative style of playing electric guitar. For the most part he gave up using a pick in favor of using his calloused fingers. Sometimes he bashes the strings with  his thumb creating a funk like sound almost like a bass player. His picking style is constantly in flux constantly searching for new microtonal areas. His use of the tremolo bar keeps his sound rooted in 60’s hard rock, while at the same time expanding his tones into constantly new and innovative territory. The result is a symphony of guitar sounds that a trio of experienced pickers would be hard pressed to emulate. The explosive song also highlighted the requisite skills of the fusion rhythm section composed of Rhonda Smith on bass and Jonathan Joseph on drums. Their jazz oriented style matched perfectly with Beck’s masterful techniques.

jeffbeck

After several more songs from the new album, Beck changed up the tempo with one of the most dramatic songs of the night, a cover salute to Mahavishnu Orchestra and their 1972 classic “You Know You Know”. The explosive cover was a testament to the powerful guitar style of one of the only modern music guitar players to rival Beck’s finesse, John McLaughlin. The dramatic song also highlighted the immense rhythm section talents of Smith and Joseph, with their respective bass and drum solos.

Beck then changed the mood again bringing out his longtime collaborator Jimmy Hall, the former lead singer and harmonica player for the Southern rock band Wet Willie. Hall has played with Beck as far back as 1985, when he was nominated for a Grammy his work on Beck’s album Flash. The band with Hall on the microphone launched into two soul drenched blues covers of  “Morning Dew” and “A Change Is Gonna Come,” by Bonnie Dobson and Sam Cooke respectively. On the latter, Hall was able to hit some ear shattering and starling high notes that wowed the crowd and repeatedly brought them to their feet.

Beck returned to the Blow By Blow album with another nod to Stevie Wonder, playing and astonishing version of  “Cause We Ended As Lovers”. Bones returned to sing lead vocals on several more songs from the new album in a blues drenched style finding the throaty singer sprawling across the floor of the stage. The mood returned to the political vent of the new album and the singer expressed the anguished emotion of the lyrics perfectly.

jefffeck0

The band returned to the instrumental mode with one of Beck’s most well known tracks “Bolero.” The  stinging guitar drenched track was first recorded in 1966 by Jeff Beck on lead guitar, Jimmy Page on a 12 string, John Paul Jones on bass, Keith Moon on drums and Nicky Hopkins on piano. Jimmy hall returned to sing and play harmonica on the last four songs of the set. These included yet another homage to Stevie Wonder featuring a spirited version of  “Superstition.” The crowd by this time had surged forward pressing against the barricades and as is the custom at the Samala showroom, eager fans were allowed to swarm the front of the stage for the end of the show.

The double encore began with a Muddy Waters classic American blues song, “Little Brown Bird”. Hall returned to sing and play an appropriately rocking harmonica solo. The final encore featured an almost magical instrumental version of The Beatles classic, “A Day in the Life”. The huge crowd that stayed to meet him was a testament to the power of this amazing group of musicians.

Jeff Beck sets 50th anniversary date in Hollywood

He'll play the Bowl on August 10 with Buddy Guy and Beth Hart in support

jeff beck 50th anniversary tour

Jeff Beck will celebrate his 50 years in the music business with a show at the Hollywood Bowl in California this year.

The show takes place on August 10 and Beck will be supported by blues icon Buddy Guy – who will himself be celebrating his 80th birthday – as well as Beth Hart.

Beck says: “Sharing the stage and this moment with Buddy is a dream for me. His live concerts are legendary and the music world would be a very boring place without his influence.”

Beck got his break in 1965 when he replaced Eric Clapton in the Yardbirds after being recommended by Jimmy Page. He went on to be inducted into the Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame both with The Yardbirds and as a solo artist.

He is also working on a book that focuses on his two passions – rock’n’roll and hot rodding. Titled Beck01 , the book will be published by Genesis Publishing Group later this year. He’s also working on an autobiography and an officially sanctioned documentary.

Beck adds: “Right from the beginning, I’ve tried to do something with anything I’ve got hold of. At the age of 13, I built two or three of my own guitars. I painted the frets on. It was fun just to look at it and hold it. I knew where I was headed.”

Tickets for the Hollywood Bowl are available at the venue’s website .

Video: Jeff Beck Joins The Rolling Stones at 50th Anniversary Show for "Going Down"

jeff beck 50th anniversary tour

Over the weekend, The Rolling Stones finally took the stage in the year of their 50th anniversary, delivering a 23-song set to the crowd assembled at London's O2 Arena.

Guests on hand included Mary J. Blige — who added a soulful flavor to "Gimme Shelter" — and guitar legend Jeff Beck, who joined the band for a ripping rendition of "Going Down," the Don Nix tune made famous by Freddie King, and recorded by Beck for 1972's Jeff Beck Group (not to be confused with the Rolling Stones' deep cut, "I'm Going Down").

Check out fan-filmed footage from the performance below. And while you're at it, here's former Stone Mick Taylor's guest appearance from that same night. He performed "Midnight Rambler" with the band.

The Stones are scheduled to play four more shows celebrating their 50th anniversary, including one in Brooklyn at the brand-new Barclays Center and two in Newark, New Jersey.

The band recently released a new greatest-hits package, GRRR! , which included two new songs recorded in Paris earlier this year, "One More Shot" and "Doom and Gloom."

Grand Funk Railroad Announce We’re an American Band 50th Anniversary US Tour

Celebrating 50 years of the band's seminal 1973 album and hit title track

Grand Funk Railroad Announce We’re an American Band 50th Anniversary US Tour

Grand Funk Railroad have announced a US tour celebrating the 50th anniversary of their 1973 album We’re an American Band and its hit title track.

The veteran rockers will kick things off with an appearance at the Clewiston Sugar Festival on Saturday (March 18th) in Clewiston, Florida. From there, they’ll play an April 1st show in Akron, Ohio, followed by select dates throughout April, May, June, and July. The tour’s final headlining show is set for July 7th in St. Louis, with Grand Funk Railroad then supporting Kid Rock for a two-night stand in their hometown of Detroit on July 14th and 15th.

Tickets are on sale now via Ticketmaster . Alternatively, you can look for deals or find tickets to sold-out shows on StubHub , where your purchase is 100% guaranteed through StubHub’s Fan Protect program.

“We’re an American Band” remains an FM staple decades after it shot to No. 1 on the Billboard charts back in 1973 and stands as Grand Funk’s most well-known hit. Founding drummer Don Brewer is credited with writing the song and singing lead vocals, and he fondly recalled its origins in a press release for the upcoming tour.

“’We’re an American Band’ came to me when we were flying from town to town on our ‘Phoenix Tour’ in 1972,” Brewer said. “We were being sued by our former manager Terry Knight and he was trying to stop us from performing. The line — ‘We’re comin’ to your town, we’ll help you party it down’ — came to me first and I wrote the song around that line. Taking snippets of things going on during the tour at that time, like staying up all night with Freddy King playing poker, four young chiquitas in Omaha, sweet sweet Connie in Little Rock, and finally the declaration, ‘We’re an American Band,’ because it sounds great and sings well. I feel lucky and blessed every time we play it live.”

The Rolling Stones’ 50th Anniversary Tour Blasts Off in London

By Mark Sutherland

Mark Sutherland

The Rolling Stones began their 50th anniversary tour with the biggest possible bang on Sunday night, as a host of special guests joined them for a hit-packed show in London’s O2 Arena. Former Stones comrades Bill Wyman and Mick Taylor returned to the ranks, while Mary J. Blige and Jeff Beck were also on hand to help with the celebrations.

Wyman – who left the Stones in 1992 – was greeted with warm applause and a handshake from Keith Richards as he returned to play bass on “It’s Only Rock and Roll” and “Honky Tonk Women.” But the biggest cheers came for Taylor, who hasn’t been a Stone since 1974 – he played trademark blues guitar solos on an extended version of “Midnight Rambler” and looked like he was enjoying every second of the reunion.

Rare and Intimate Pictures of the Rolling Stones

Blige brought a gospel feel to “Gimme Shelter,” trading vocal acrobatics with Mick Jagger , and Beck did a flashy guitar turn on 1969’s “I’m Going Down.” But, despite the headline-grabbing special guests, the evening remained very much about the Stones’ core members and their remarkable career, with the set spanning from their second-ever single, 1963’s “I Wanna Be Your Man” to their latest, 2012’s “Doom and Gloom.”

In fact, it ended up pretty much like anyone else’s 50th birthday party: there were some old friends, some laughs, some tears, plenty of memories and a lot of embarrassing dancing – plus it was all over in time for everyone to get the last train home.

That said, the evening began half an hour later than billed, at 8.30 p.m., with a video in which stars from Iggy Pop to Elton John and Johnny Depp to Nick Cave revealed how their first time hearing the Stones impacted them. Then a host of drummers wearing gorilla masks – a nod to the cover of their new hits compilation, GRRR! – paraded around the arena before “I Wanna Be Your Man” kicked things off.

Editor’s picks

Every awful thing trump has promised to do in a second term, the 250 greatest guitarists of all time, the 500 greatest albums of all time, the 50 worst decisions in movie history.

Simian percussionists and the massive, lips-shaped stage set aside, this was a relatively gimmick-free Stones set, both in terms of stage production and musical feel. This was the Stones in the raw – or, at least, as raw as they can be after 50 years together and when playing in front of 20,000 fans. So hits like “Get Off of My Cloud,” “It’s All Over Now” and “Paint It Black,” plus a raucous “All Down the Line” were rattled through with minimum ceremony, at maximum volume.

Jagger, however, was in vintage showman form. In between pumping up the crowd with regular forays down a runway that ran around a central “lips” pit full of hardcore fans, he brought plenty of funnies, at one point even joking about the controversy over the cost of tickets for the show, which started at £90 (some were re-sold for thousands of pounds online).

“Everybody alright in the cheap seats?” Jagger asked. “They aren’t so cheap though, are they? That’s the trouble . . . “

“What a year it’s been for British celebrations,” Jagger quipped later. “There was the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee . . . We didn’t do that. The Olympics . . . We didn’t do that. James Bond’s 50th anniversary . . . And we didn’t do the song for that either! But I’m so glad that we’re here and that you’re here.”

Richards – while seemingly content to let Ronnie Wood do some of the heavy lifting on guitar – was in similarly jocular form. “It’s good to see you all,” Richards grinned as he took the mic for a two-song stint, “Before They Make Me Run” and “Happy,” adding, “It’s good to see anybody.”

The other members also took their moment in the sun, Wood milking the applause to such an extent that Jagger was moved to jokingly warn him that people “had to catch the last tube.” In contrast, drummer Charlie Watts only reluctantly stepped to the front of the stage to take his bow.

The set closed with a peerless run of classics, including “Start Me Up,” “Tumbling Dice” and “Brown Sugar,” before Jagger donned a feathery cloak for an epic “Sympathy for the Devil” to close the main set.

After a brief break they returned with not one, but two choirs for a stunning “You Can’t Always Get What You Want” before a final “Jumpin’ Jack Flash,” with Richards’ kinetic riffing center stage, ended the evening with a massive crowd singalong.

True, even after 50 years, the Stones still couldn’t get any “Satisfaction” – the 1965 hit was the most notable absentee from the set, despite appearing on the set list handed to the media. But as Jagger left the stage, still jogging and shaking his maracas after two and a half hours and 23 songs, it was clear that even at these ticket prices, the Stones’ 50th anniversary shows deliver value for money.

Depp agreed and they started in 2019. Over the next three years, they recorded a mix of Depp originals along with a wide range of covers that touches on everything from Celtic and Motown, to the Beach Boys and Killing Joke. “We were going to call the album ‘Kitchen Sink’ because we threw everything in it,” the two-time Rock and Roll Hall of Famer says with a laugh. “The only game plan we had was to play songs we like and see where they took us.”

Beck is universally acknowledged as one of the most talented and significant guitarists in the world and has played alongside some of the greatest artists of rock, blues, and jazz. Over the course of his distinguished 50+ music career, he has earned an incredible eight Grammy Awards, been ranked by Rolling Stone as one of the “100 Greatest Guitarists of All Time,” and been inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame twice – once as a member of the Yardbirds and again as a solo artist.
