Famous movies filmed in Chicago

Grab some popcorn and watch your favorite movies come to life in Chicago. The city has been featured on the silver screen for over a century, including starring roles in classics like The Blues Brothers , Ferris Bueller’s Day Off , The Dark Knight , and more. Here are just a few ways to go behind-the-scenes while you’re here.

Famous film locations in Chicago

The Blues Brothers On a mission from God? This  Blues Brothers guide will set you on the trail of the most recognizable locations from The Blues Brothers — like the Soul Food Cafe and Ray’s Music Exchange. Just don’t forget your Fedora and sunglasses.

The Dark Knight Christopher Nolan transformed Chicago into Gotham City for his 2008 blockbuster. Wayne Enterprises was actually the former IBM building at 330 N. Wabash Ave. And, in an especially intense aerial shot, Batman surveys Gotham City from the top of the Willis Tower . Don’t leave without taking a cab through Lower Wacker Drive in downtown Chicago, where the highly explosive chase scenes between Batman and the Joker were shot.

Ferris Bueller’s Day Off Ferris evaded the suspicious Principal Rooney during an action-packed day off in Chicago. You can see where Bueller browsed masterpieces in the Art Institute of Chicago , caught a Cubs game at Wrigley Field, peered down from the 103rd floor at Skydeck Chicago , and led a spontaneous rendition of Twist and Shout while parading down Dearborn Street. Check out more Ferris Bueller’s Day Off movie locations in Chicago .

Transformers: Dark of the Moon In the third installment of this blockbuster franchise, downtown Chicago gets destroyed in a battle between Autobots and Decepticons. But, lucky for you, the city has fully recovered. You’ll recognize the Jeweler’s Building and Trump International Hotel & Tower along the river, which were heavily featured in the movie.

The Fugitive Wrongfully convicted of murder, Dr. Richard Kimble shakes U.S. Marshalls by running around downtown Chicago (and happening by some of its most iconic sights). Kimble runs past The Picasso statue in Daley Plaza , escapes the Feds at the Chicago Hilton Hotel , and makes an ill-fated phone call to the U.S. Marshalls from beneath the Wells Street Bridge. Another location to check out: the Kimble residence at 336 W. Wisconsin St. in Lincoln Park .

High Fidelity Rob Gordon went on a personal journey by reliving each of his romantic failures. He was dissed at Lane Tech College Prep High School in Roscoe Village, denied by Peggy outside the Music Box Theatre in Lakeview , and waxed poetic about Laura at The Green Mill in Uptown . Championship Vinyl was located at the corner of North Milwaukee Avenue and North Honore Street in the Wicker Park neighborhood.

Home Alone Who needs a security system when you have a clever 9-year-old? Kevin McCallister sabotaged a home invasion with a couple of paint cans and the help of his misunderstood neighbor. The film featured the McCallister home in beautiful suburban Winnetka, shots of the Trinity United Methodist Church in suburban Wilmette, and a memorable scene of a panicked, family-wide sprint through Chicago O’Hare International Airport .

Public Enemies Johnny Depp as John Dillinger meets his demise outside the Biograph Theater in Lincoln Park , the actual site of the notorious gangster’s death. Then make your way to the main hall at Union Station in the Loop , where the anti-Dillinger crowd gathered in the movie.

The Color of Money Fast Eddie Felson ran Chicago area pool halls alongside his star pupil Vincent Lauria. The film featured shots inside Chris’s Billiards on the far North Side, while the purported tournament in Atlantic City was actually shot in Navy Pier’s Grand Ballroom.

The Untouchables The classic crime drama featured Chicago as it was during the height of Prohibition, with memorable scenes shot at the Chicago Board of Trade , Michigan Avenue Bridge , and Union Station . You can also pay a visit to the Rookery Building , the location of the Untouchables’ offices, the lobby of the Auditorium Theatre at Roosevelt University , where Elliot Ness confronts Capone. Oh, and Capone’s infamous pep talk about “teamwork”? It was shot in the historic Blackstone Hotel .

And on Tuesday evenings from June through August, visitors and locals head to the Jay Pritzker Pavilion for the Millennium Park Summer Film Series . Kick back, picnic, and watch blockbusters, family favorites, and cult classics surrounded by the lit-up skyline.

Water Flicks features movie screening at another iconic Chicago attraction — Navy Pier . This free series takes place at the Lake Stage in Polk Bros Park, with Lake Michigan as a backdrop. As the sun goes down, the lights come up on the big screen and the surrounding pier, including its famous Centennial Wheel. Screenings are from June through August.

Attend a film festival It makes sense that a city with a long film history is also home to tons of groundbreaking film fests — almost 40 throughout the year that showcase everything from LGBTQ+ to underground to international films and more.

The main event is the Chicago International Film Festival in October. It’s been going strong for almost 60 years, making it North America’s longest-running competitive film festival. The fest showcases more than 150 films from over 50 countries, plus filmmaker Q&As, red carpet galas, tributes, panels, and, of course, an awards ceremony. Check out more of Chicago’s annual film festivals .

A tour of Ferris Bueller’s Chicago

Stuck at home? Take a trip through 1980s Chicago by revisiting this John Hughes classic.

If being stuck indoors while you practice social distancing has you pining for a day out on the town, dust off your copy Ferris Bueller’s Day Off and distract yourself with a nostalgic trip through 1980s Chicago. The movie was a “love letter” to the city from filmmaker John Hughes. “I really wanted to capture as much of Chicago as I could,” he said. “Not just in the architecture and landscape, but the spirit.”

Chicago isn’t just a backdrop for the beloved 1986 film. Places like Willis Tower, Wrigley Field, the Art Institute, and Lake Shore Drive played pivotal roles in the story—almost taking on lives of their own. And by capturing the city’s skyscrapers, cultural landmarks, streets, and people on film, Midwesterners were able to claim a piece of Hollywood for themselves.

Many of the sites featured in Ferris Bueller’s Day Off also were personally meaningful for Hughes. For instance, as a high schooler growing up in Northbrook, Illinois, the future director often escaped suburbia by wandering the halls of the Art Institute.

Here are some of the most iconic Chicago filming locations in the ’80s classic.

Cameron's House

Ferris’s loyal sidekick Cameron Frye lives in a modernist home designed by architect A. James Speyer located in Highland Park. The property’s glass-encased garage plays an important role in the movie. It’s the site where the precious 1961 Ferrari plummets down into the ravine. The North Shore home was on the market for five years before it finally sold in 2014 .

  • Open in Google Maps

A glass garage over a ravine with trees. There is a red convertible parked inside.

333 West Wacker

Just before the scene at Ferris' dad's office, the film focuses on the then-new 333 West Wacker Drive. The movie was shot in 1985, and the curved high-rise designed by Kohn Pedersen Fox Associates was completed just two years prior. The office tower was the epitome of cutting edge postmodern design at the time and it reflects the bend of the Chicago River in its glassy green facade.

Glenbrook North High School

In the movie, Ferris and Cameron speed over to Glenbrook North in the collectible Ferrari to bust Ferris' girlfriend Sloane Peterson out of school. The concrete stairs Sloane walks down are still mostly the same today, and students occasionally recreate the scene. Glenbrook North was Hughes’s alma mater and also served as the setting for The Breakfast Club one year earlier.

In 1986, Millennium Park wasn’t a thing yet. Construction for the famous downtown park began in 1998. Aerial shots in the film show the sprawling train yards that would later get capped by lush gardens, playgrounds, art sculptures, and a Frank Gehry-designed bandshell.

Watching Ferris Buehler’s Day Off and forgot about how much awesome 80s footage of Chicago they had. Posted by Pat Hammond on  Friday, January 11, 2019

Lake Shore Drive

If you steal your dad’s Ferrari, how can you not cruise down Lake Shore Drive in the warm weather? It’s perfectly Chicago: skyscrapers on one side, and a clear blue lake on the other. The movie depicts Ferris, Cameron, and Sloane heading south on LSD with the John Hancock Center visible in the distance.

Italian Village

Italian Village on Monroe Street opened in 1927—it still serves up Tuscan fare today and represents one of the last old school Chicago dining rooms . After the trio exit Lake Shore Drive, there’s a shot of them driving past the restaurant’s iconic neon sign.

Parking Garage

The garage where the teens drop off the Ferrari (and where the “professional” parking attendant can’t help but take the convertible for a spin) is on Madison Street.

Wells Street

As soon as Ferris and company leave the parking garage, the attendant and his buddy hightail it out on the road. Hughes shot the beginning of their joyride on Wells Street, where the hot red Ferrari is framed by the familiar elevated CTA tracks.

View this post on Instagram A post shared by Dave Gil (@undercoverchef) on Sep 28, 2019 at 8:01am PDT

Willis Tower

The crew’s first stop downtown? The Sears Tower observation deck—now named the Willis Tower Skydeck. In the movie, Ferris mentions it’s the tallest building in the world which was true through the ’80s and into the ’90s. When the Petronas Towers in Malaysia were completed in 1996, the 1,451-foot tower lost its title. The iconic skyscraper managed to hold onto the claim of highest roof in the Western Hemisphere until 2019.

Chicago Board of Trade

The Board of Trade shown in Ferris Bueller’s Day Off looks quite different today. In the ’80s, traders wore color-coded jackets, completed sales on paper, and yelled across the pit. Now, that same room is filled with digital screens, computers, and far fewer traders.

Even if you’re Abe Froman the sausage king of Chicago, you won’t be able to get reservations at this fancy French restaurant because it simply doesn’t exist. The exterior shots of the fictional Chez Quis were a private home in Gold Coast which has since been remodeled and doesn’t feature the ivy-covered wall anymore. The interior shots were all filmed in Los Angeles.

View this post on Instagram A post shared by Timmy (@timmyo) on Oct 22, 2015 at 4:23pm PDT

Wrigley Field

What did generations of Chicagoans learn from Ferris? If you play hooky, go to a Cubs game. Of course, Hughes couldn’t resist adding in a scene set at one of the most beloved ballparks in the country. A neat detail you might have missed: Ferris catches a foul ball in this scene and later uses the same baseball to switch off the snoring soundtrack on his bedroom stereo at the end of the film.

View this post on Instagram A post shared by @ontheboomchicago on May 16, 2019 at 9:47am PDT

Art Institute of Chicago

Hughes choreographed a memorable montage at the Art Institute of Chicago, one of his favorite places in the city growing up. The three protagonists enter behind a group of school children, and then proceed to be goofballs throughout the massive museum. Then, Cameron comes face to face with Georges Seurat’s A Sunday on La Grande Jatte and has a moment . Meanwhile, Ferris and Sloane find themselves in front of Marc Chagall’s America Windows .

Daley Plaza

An impromptu musical number at the Von Steuben Day Parade shows the best of downtown Chicago—including the Picasso sculpture at Daley Plaza and Dearborn Street. Requiring nearly 10,000 extras, the scene brought the people of Chicago into the film and was Hughes’s favorite part of the entire movie.

View this post on Instagram A post shared by Katianna Lee (@katiannalee) on Feb 1, 2016 at 11:34am PST

Federal Center

While Ferris is serenading the Germans on a parade float, Cameron and Sloane take a walk through the plaza at the Mies van der Rohe-designed Federal Building and Post Office to talk about what happens after they graduate from high school. You can also spot Calder’s Flamingo sculpture —another beloved Federal Center landmark.

View this post on Instagram A post shared by @fvckpoliteness on Jan 8, 2020 at 9:39am PST

Glencoe Beach

As the trio head back to the North Shore, Cameron’s meltdown reaches a rock bottom when he realizes how many miles were put on his dad’s car. Ferris says, “I think Cameron may have blown a microchip or two,” and the three take a moment to regroup on the rocky wall overlooking Glencoe Beach.

The Dazzling Interiors of the Loop tour highlights truly spectacular interior spaces that are often overlooked or taken for granted, and all are within easy walking distance of each other. She has notebooks of historic reference photos that help her visitors make sense of what they’re seeing, and her conversational skills elicit interesting questions and help build an instantaneous bond within the tour group. It’s noteworthy that she has such a great rapport with the security staff in all the spots we visited, and that a number of passersby couldn’t resist eavesdropping on the tour. • segan10462 0 contributions 4.0 of 5 bubbles Great Chicago architecture starter tour. 5 stars if group was smaller. Guide was prompt, kind, and knowledgeable. Group of 20 was too big, which caused small problems throughout the tour. We were too big for everyone to hear well. Just entering and exiting buildings took extra time. And, even our street crossings resulted in a couple of delays, when the group stretched apart, and everyone didn't make the lights. With a slightly smaller group, we could have seen more, and waited less. Fix that, and it's a 5-star tour for sure. Read more Written March 31, 2024
