Joe Jackson was great last night, even more enjoyable to see a show with my old friend, Matt Garrett with whom I've seen some legendary concerts. Joe and his touring band: Graham Maby (bass), Teddy Kumpel (guitar), and Doug Yowell (drums) were fantastic and capable of covering a broad range of Joe's catalog and covers (Scary Monsters!) with their freakish musicianship and solid vocal skills as well.

Joe (and his fans) aren't getting any younger, but for most of the gig you could close your eyes and it would be 1986 all over again. His piano playing has always been stellar and that combined with his beautiful grand piano and the always great sound at The Majestic Theatre made it sublime. We suffered a slight embarrassment of riches in that we were so close to the stage and had a bit of a proximity imbalance with the mix. Doug Yowell's deceptively diminutive frame belied a powerhouse player who literally beat the skins off his kit. That's not to say he wasn't subtle and nuanced when needed. Doug and the band join a long roster of amazing musicians that Joe seems to attract magnetically.

Graham Maby doesn't need my description or endorsement. He's a legend in the Joe canon, and deservedly so. Teddy Kumpel was a previously unknown player to me but he adeptly covered a broad range of not only guitar tones but several other instruments during the performance (often covering brass, string and even vocal parts). Joe's set progressed in an additive fashion, with just Joe on piano and vocals for the first few songs and Graham joining for "Is She Really Going Out With Him?" followed by Doug Yowell, and finally Teddy Kumpel. They ended the set the same way, which is such a Joe thing to do. He's always had the aesthetic symmetry to his art, demonstrated in the global resonance of Big World, recently mirrored in the four "City" EPs that make the new album. The devil is always in the details and Joe's music has always had multiple layers to discover over progressive listenings. Supposedly some private New York gigs were recorded for television, hopefully these will surface at some point.

In 1979 I bought a music sampler issued in a tin can (some joke about KY rations). Among songs by unknown bands like The Police was a track called "Got the Time" by Joe Jackson. I then purchased a sampler LP which had "Sunday Papers" and I immediately knew I liked this guy. Over the years he grew and matured producing such songs as "Steppin' Out", "Breaking Us in Two" and whatever.

The show was more 'Joe Jackson' the jazz keyboardist than 'Joe Jackson' the Punk/New Waver' but he still did "Sunday Papers", "Is She Really Going Out with Him" and he opened with "It's Different for Girls" (2nd album 2001).

The crowd was my age (50's) but I was pleasantly admonished for using my phone as I turned it on to write down the setlist being told it was 'distracting'. I happily pocketed my phone and enjoyed the rest of the show. If only more people would tell the folks in front of them to turn that shit off. For the record I wanted to record the setlist to upload to setlist.fm since it had made me happy filling in memory blanks.

He also had his new album on vinyl at the merch booth so I had more money to give him.

Did I mention ample free parking?

If it wasn't for 11PM Bay Bridge traffic being so bad that we bailed at 5th st., drove to the San Mateo Bridge and made it to the East Bay faster than if we stuck it out it would have been the perfect night.

If he comes back we will go see him and you should too.

So, first time seeing Joe Jackson for just over 20 years, at London Palladium. Curiously, it was marketed that he would be the 'support act' too, doing a solo (i.e. sans band) set. If this was the case, then both this (20 mins) and the main set (90 mins) were very short indeed.

However, I think you can reasonably say this was one gig, without support, but even then, at 1hr 50 mins, it was still at least 10 minutes too short, especially for someone with Joe's catalogue, and when three of the songs were covers!

Anyway, aside from the short length of the concert, it was excellent. He remains in great voice, and the band (with long-time bassist Graham Maby) were great, with a new guitar chorus part instead of the vocal (which would probably be difficult for Joe to reach these days) on 'Real Men' a welcome addition. That song was the highlight, alongside 'Another World', new song 'A Little Smile' and 'One More Time' in the encore. 'Steppin Out' was slowed up so much that it lost it's magic. In the solo set, 'It's Different For Girls' was fabulous.

All up a good gig, but too short and too many covers!

My dad is a Joe Jackson fan, so he decided to take me to see a show. Honestly, I thought it was going to be so lame - but man was I wrong! I fell in absolute love with his performance.

His warm personality really shines through not only in his lyrics, but his smile and how he interacts with the crowd. He is able to switch between different genres, covering some jazz pop, new wave, classical and more!

Such a phenomenal performer. The crowd was awesome, the whole vibe of the show was amazing. Even as an 18 year old girl with her dad, I still had a great time, that obviously says a lot!! I cannot pick just one favorite song, but I really enjoyed "Inbetweenies" and "Steppin Out". Just incredible!

We were very lucky to be able to meet him briefly after the show, and his personality is just as good as his music. After the show I bought his CD I was that impressed.

If you haven't seen him in person yet, you need to. And if you've already seen him, go again! You won't forget this experience!

Great concert, with a nice mix of old and new songs: the new songs, from the Fast Forward album, were rockers reminiscent of Volume 4; the classics were pretty much what a fan would expect--Is She Really Going Out With Him?, You Can't Get What You Want, Different For Girls, One More Time, Real Men, etc.--and performed with energy and joy. It's great that Joe Jackson has a rich back catalog to draw on that he's not afraid to exploit, and that he's also moving ahead with great new music.

His band--bassist Graham Maby, guitarist Teddy Kumpel, and drummer Doug Yowell--were exceptional musicians, with great solo turns and solid arrangements.

Joe Jackson put on a special show in a great venue. The show began with Joe alone at his piano, and the band joined him one at a time; then left one at a time, leaving Joe spotlighted at the piano during the last song. In between, he touched old and new, fast and slow with his wonderful piano playing, exhibiting his legendary songwriting and throwing in covers from Steely Dan and Television. He played for 2 hours and it was well worth the $64!

It had been 20 years since my last JJ show. The Roxy, big band and a baby grand. It was magical. But things change in 20. Orpheum show was a dissapointment. JJ was stripped down for the road as a 4 piece and no piano, an electric piano (cheesey). Without a big band his best stuff is not playable. I don't get it, The Roxy is a third of the size of The Orpheum and he packed a small stage w/everything but the kitchen sink.

Joe Jackson totally exceeded my expectations. He began his set with just him and his piano and played a few tunes before bringing out his fantastic band.

He went through plenty of the hits and some of the newest batch of songs from the album Fast Forward. Even the new songs were tremendous... well written and played. He is in fine voice, amazing piano chops, and his band is top notch. A show not to miss!

This was my 14 or 15th JJ concert and he always delivers a great mixture of fresh versions of all time favorites, a touch on the new and a couple of right in the pocket standards. He was in a great mood very talkative and seemed to enjoy himself as much as the audience. I just never know when it will be the last time for any of my really great top performers - so I enjoy every moment very much - way to go Joe

Joe Jackson was amazing!! Songs from his whole catalog along with a few from his great new album Fool. The band was tight and my man Graham Maby on bass was the highlight for me. Any fan of Joe Jackson, casual or diehard, will thoroughly enjoy this show!

Joe Jackson: Two Rounds of Racket Tour

Door Time: 7pm

£40.20 - £57.60

JOE JACKSON PRESENTS “THE TWO ROUNDS OF RACKET TOUR”

Featuring Joe Jackson solo set followed by Joe Jackson with a 9 piece band playing the music of Max Champion.

Following the newly released album by earMUSIC, Mr. Joe Jackson presents: Max Champion in ‘What A Racket!’ – reviving the songs of enigmatic early 20th-century English Music Hall artist Max Champion – renowned musician and producer Joe Jackson announces “The Two Rounds Of Racket Tour” appearing at 10 venues across the UK in October 2024, including two nights at London’s Alexandra Palace. Tickets are available from 10am on Friday 15 March!

“The Two Rounds Of Racket Tour” promises to be festive, fun, and unlike anything else music fans, will see next (or any other) year. The show will be in two parts: a solo set by Joe Jackson of his original songs, and a set based on the album What A Racket! – the first performance in more than 100 years of the songs of forgotten Music Hall genius Max Champion, with Joe and a nine-piece band.

Max Champion was born in 1882 in London’s East End and is thought to have been related to the great Victorian entertainer Harry Champion. As an up-and-coming performer he shared the stage with big stars such as Gus Ellen and Vesta Tilley, but his career (much like the Music Hall era itself) was cut short by the First World War, and his songs faded into obscurity. That is, until 2014, when Max Champion sheet music started to surface: first in Malta, then in England, and, intriguingly, in Belgium, where Max probably met his end in the trenches. By 2019, enough songs had been recovered for Joe Jackson to resurrect them with a 12-piece orchestra.

According to producer Joe Jackson, “These were wonderful songs in their time, but they’re surprisingly modern, too. Sometimes it’s almost as if Max is speaking, from his London of the early 20th century, directly to us in the early 21st.” A newly released documentary now sheds light on the early 20th century artist from England. Music Hall originated in 19th-century London, transitioning from pubs and street performances to grand theaters by 1900. It attracted a diverse audience, spanning from commoners to aristocrats.

The songs in this genre depicted life in the Victorian and Edwardian eras, often infused with humor, satire, sentimentality, patriotism, and occasionally darker themes like jealousy and murder. Some songs were also risqué but cleverly expressed.

The upcoming Joe Jackson show, due to take place on 17 Mar 2022, has been rescheduled for 29 Jul 2022. All tickets will remain valid for the new date, if you have any questions please speak to your point of purchase.

Joe Jackson is launching a new tour with the same band as his last, the successful Four Decade Tour of 2019, and his last album Fool: Graham Maby (Bass, Vocals), Teddy Kumpel (Guitar, Vocals) and Doug Yowell (Drums, Vocals, Electronics). The show will feature both the full band and a 'mini-set' of Joe solo.

The songs will be drawn from Joe's whole career, including some that haven't been heard live in many years. Watch out also for some surprises, including some completely new material. The tour will take the band to some cities Joe has never been played (Saarbrücken, Valencia) or hasn't played for a long time (Bordeaux, Lisbon, Oporto) as well as seven shows in the UK and new venues in Berlin, Paris and other cities.

"We've been dealing with two viruses over the past two years, and the worst - the one we really need to put behind us - is Fear.Love is the opposite of fear, so if you love live music, come out and support it!'

Joe Jackson and his band will be joined by the incredible Coruja Jones as the support act for this show!

Mr. joe jackson presents: joe jackson solo and the music of max champion.

joe jackson uk tour

Joe Jackson is coming to Portsmouth with an unprecedented two-part performance with no intermission.  First, listen to the music of Joe Jackson solo, performing songs from his catalog.  Next, Mr. Joe Jackson presents the music of Max Champion, featuring a nine-piece band.

Joe Jackson was born in 1954 in Burton-on-Trent, England, but grew up in the South Coast naval port city of Portsmouth.

At age 16, Joe played his first paying gig, as pianist in a pub next door to a glue factory just outside of Portsmouth. This was followed by other pub gigs (in which he was often trying to entertain crowds of drunken, bottle-throwing sailors) and accompanying a bouzouki player in a Greek restaurant.

By 1978 Joe was living in London and hawking an album-length demo, with his own band (Graham Maby, Bass; Dave Houghton, Drums; Gary Sanford, Guitar) standing by.  That demo – Look Sharp – eventually found its way to American producer David Kershenbaum, a talent scout for A&M Records.  Joe was immediately signed and Look Sharp re-recorded in ‘78. The Joe Jackson Band finally started to play regular gigs and the album was released in 1979.

Look Sharp was followed within a year by the very similar I’m The Man , and in 1980 by the darker, more reggae-influenced Beat Crazy . At the end of 1980 when drummer Houghton decided to quit, Joe decided to dissolve the band and try something new.

In 1981, Jackson recorded Jumpin’ Jive , a ‘musical vacation’ paying tribute to Swing and Jump Blues artists such as Louis Jordan and Cab Calloway. Joe spent a large chunk of 1982 in New York – the result was Night and Day , a more sophisticated and melodic record built around keyboards and Latin percussion, rather than guitars. With a new guitar-less band, Jackson hit the road, and the album became his biggest success, going platinum in the US. During the tour, Joe also somehow found time to write his first film score, for James Bridges’ Mike’s Murder . (He would go on to write several more, including most notably for Francis Ford Coppola’s Tucker in 1988).

Jackson’s next album Body and Soul (1984), was in a similar vein to Night and Day but featured a horn section (which, along with the Blue Note-inspired cover art, led many people to wrongly assume he’d made a jazz record). For Big World (1986), Jackson stripped everything down to a 4-piece again, and recorded live. In 1989 he went in the opposite direction with the majestic, semi-autobiographical Blaze of Glory . Laughter and Lust (1991) was more like a mainstream (though still idiosyncratic) rock record, but yet another lengthy world tour left Jackson exhausted and at a creative dead end. As he sees it, his workaholic phase – which also included several film scores, a live album ( Live 1980-86 ), an instrumental album ( Will Power , 1987), guest appearances with Suzanne Vega, Ruben Blades and Joan Armatrading, and endless touring – was over.

The 1990s brought some of his most challenging and eclectic works: the gentle, soul-searching Night Music (1994), Heaven and Hell (1997), and the album Joe considers his best (and most underrated): Night and Day II (2000). The turn of the century saw a burst of creativity: Jackson won his first Grammy (Best Pop Instrumental Album for the non-traditional, non-orchestral Symphony No.1) and published his book, A Cure For Gravity.

In 2003, Joe reformed the original Joe Jackson Band for a stunning new album, Volume 4 , and a lengthy tour. The reunion was always intended as a one-off, but it also produced a live album, Afterlife , in 2004.

Having failed to happily re-establish himself in London, he moved to Berlin, where his next album Rain was recorded in 2007. Consisting of ten powerful, timeless new songs, Rain creates a surprisingly epic sound with just voices, piano, bass and drums. The trio toured for the next three years. A live album, Live Music , was released in 2011.

In 2012, Joe released a tribute to one of his greatest musical heroes, Duke Ellington. The Duke is an often radical re-interpretation of fifteen Ellington classics, arranged into ten tracks, and featuring an eclectic roster of guest artists including Iggy Pop, Ahmir ‘Questlove’ Thompson and other members of The Roots, Sharon Jones, Steve Vai, and jazz violin star Regina Carter, who joined Joe on the subsequent tour.

Jackson released the album  Fool in 2019, which debuted in the top 20 album charts in Holland, Belgium, Germany and Switzerland. In the US, it debuted at No. 25 on Billboard’s Top Album Sales Chart. In the UK, it entered the Indie Albums Chart at No. 13.

After a Covid induced layoff, Joe toured the US and Europe in 2022 for a tour named “Sing, You Sinners!” featuring songs from his catalog plus a few select covers. The tour featured his band Graham Maby on Bass, Teddy Kumpel on Guitar and Doug Yowell on Drums.

November 24,  2023 saw the release of  “Mr Joe Jackson Presents “What A Racket”: The Music Of Max Champion”, a collection of songs written by the long forgotten Music Hall performer Max Champion.

Joe will be out on the road during 2024 touring both the US and Europe performing a 2 part set. First part will be solo performances from his catalog. The second part will feature songs from the What A Racket album performed with a 9 piece band.

Jackson splits his time between New York, Portsmouth, UK, and Berlin.

JOE JACKSON

Joe Jackson was born on August 11 1954 in Burton-on-Trent, England, but grew up in the South Coast naval port city of Portsmouth

At age 16 Joe played his first paying gig, as pianist in a pub next door to a glue factory just outside of Portsmouth. This was followed by other pub gigs (in which he was often trying to entertain crowds of drunken, bottle-throwing sailors) and accompanying a bouzouki player in a Greek restaurant.

At age 18 Joe won a scholarship to study Composition, Piano, and Percussion at London’s Royal Academy of Music.

By 1978 Joe was living in London and hawking an album-length demo, with his own band (Graham Maby, Bass; Dave Houghton, Drums; Gary Sanford, Guitar) standing by. That demo — already called Look Sharp — eventually found its way to American producer David Kershenbaum, who was in London in the capacity of talent scout for A&M Records. Joe was immediately signed and Look Sharp more professionally re-recorded in August ’78. The Joe Jackson Band finally started to play regular gigs and the album was released in January 1979.

– – – – – – – – – –

Joe Jackson’s story up to this point is much more fully, fascinatingly, and hilariously recounted in his book A CURE FOR GRAVITY. From here on, though, it becomes more a matter of public record. Look Sharp was followed within a year by the very similar I’m The Man, and in 1980 by the darker, more reggae-influenced Beat Crazy. At the end of 1980, drummer Houghton decided to quit, and Joe decided to dissolve the band and try something new.

In 1981 Jackson recorded Jumpin’ Jive, a ‘musical vacation’ paying tribute to Swing and Jump Blues artists such as Louis Jordan and Cab Calloway. Returning to songwriting, Joe spent a large chunk of 1982 in New York. The result was Night and Day, a more sophisticated and melodic record built around keyboards and Latin percussion, rather than guitars. With a new guitar-less band, Jackson hit the road for a whole year, and the album became his biggest success, going platinum in the US. During the tour Joe also somehow found time to write his first film score, for James Bridges’ Mike’s Murder. (He would go on to write several more, including most notably for Francis Ford Coppola’s Tucker in 1988).

Jackson’s next album Body and Soul(1984) was in a similar vein to Night and Day but featured a horn section (which, along with the Blue Note-inspired cover art, led many people to wrongly assume he’d made a jazz record). For Big World (1986) Jackson stripped everything down to a 4-piece again, and recorded live, direct to 2-track master. In 1989 he went in the opposite direction with the majestic, semi-autobiographical Blaze of Glory, and toured with an 11-piece band. Laughter and Lust (1991) was more like a mainstream (though still idiosyncratic) rock record, but yet another lengthy world tour left Jackson exhausted and at a creative dead end. As he sees it, his workaholic phase — which also included several film scores, a live album (Live 1980-86), an instrumental album (Will Power, 1987), guest appearances with Suzanne Vega, Ruben Blades and Joan Armatrading, and endless touring — was over.

The 1990s brought some of his most challenging and eclectic works: the gentle, soul-searching Night Music (1994), the ambitious and original song-cycle based on the Seven Deadly Sins, Heaven and Hell (1997), and the album Joe considers his best (and most underrated): Night and Day II (2000). The turn of the century saw a burst of creativity: Jackson won his first Grammy (Best Pop Instrumental Album for the non-traditional, non-orchestral Symphony No.1) and published his book A Cure For Gravity.

In 2003 Joe re formed the original Joe Jackson Band for a stunning new album, Volume 4, and a lengthy tour. The reunion was always intended as a one-off, but it also produced a live album, Afterlife, in 2004.

By this time Jackson was living mostly back in London. He made quite a few solo appearances, including on an unusual triple-bill tour with Todd Rundgren and the string quartet Ethel. He sang and played piano on Rickie Lee Jones’ It’s Like That and William Shatner’s Has Been (produced, arranged and co-written by Ben Folds). He was also awarded a Fellowship by the Royal Academy of Music and an Honorary Doctorate by the University of Portsmouth.

In 2006 Joe turned his attention back to pure songwriting and did a short Trio tour with Graham Maby and Dave Houghton. A live album, Live Music, was released in 2011.

in 2012 Joe released a tribute to one of his greatest musical heroes, Duke Ellington. In 2015, Jackson announced the completion of his follow-up to The Duke via his official website. The album’s title, Fast Forward, and track list were confirmed in addition to North American tour dates. The titular first single was released for streaming via his official SoundCloud page.

On 18 January 2019, Jackson released the album Fool. Jackson said about the album on his website: “One of my inspirations for this album was the band I’ve been touring with on and off for the last 3 years. I’ve had many different line-ups but this one is special.” Jackson and the band performed “Fabulously Absolute” on Jimmy Fallon’s Tonight Show on 21 January 2019.[20] Fool debuted in the top 20 album charts in Holland, Belgium, Germany and Switzerland. In the US, it debuted at No. 25 on Billboard’s Top Album Sales Chart. In the UK, it entered the Indie Albums Chart at No. 13.

After a Covid induced layofff Joe toured the US and Europe in 2022 for a tour named “Sing, You Sinners!” featuring songs from his catalog plus a few select covers. The tour featured his band Graham Maby on Bass, Teddy Kumpel on Guitar and Doug Yowell on Drums.
