• Professor Trevor Anderson receives his teenager nephew Sean Anderson. He will spend ten days with his uncle while his mother, Elizabeth, prepares to move to Canada. She gives a box to Trevor that belonged to his missing brother, Max, and Trevor find a book with references to the last journey of his brother. He decides to follow the steps of Max with Sean and they travel to Iceland, where they meet the guide Hannah Ásgeirsson. While climbing a mountain, there is a thunderstorm and they protect themselves in a cave. However, lightening collapses the entrance and the trio is trapped in the cave. She stumbled across a box belonging to the knave's father, Trevor's brother Max, who went missing years ago. It contains a journal documenting his last journey, which happens to go to the very volcanic region in Iceland which Trevor's research, set up with Max, flashes as most notable. he decides to travel there and Sean insists to come along. They need a local guide and hire Hannah Ásgeirsson, who proves quite practical, while the Andersons provide ingenuity and bravado. Seeking shelter for a storm in a collapsing cave, they descend trough a volcanic exit into a road to the center of the world, and find it has its distinct fauna and flora, partially dinosaur-ancient, which adds to the dangers posed by the elements as they must seek a way out, which seems hopeless. — KGF Vissers

• Journey to the Centre of the Earth is a science fantasy action-adventure movie. In this movie, the main characters are Trevor Anderson, Sean Anderson, Max Anderson, Hannah, Elizabeth. So, the synopsis of this movie is as follows. Trevor Anderson is a volcanologist and teaches the student in the university also. At the work, Trevor found that his brother's lab is being shut down because of a lack of funding. So, he comes home and sits in a chair to relax and found some messages on the answering machine. When he plays that recording, he found that the messages are from Liz (Max's wife and Sean's mother). He is forgotten that his nephew Sean is coming to spend some days with him. When Liz drops Sean, she leaves Trevor with a box of items that belonged to Max (Trevor's brother and Sean's father) who disappeared years before. Sean takes interest when Trevor says about his father, whom he never really had a chance to meet. Inside the box, Trevor discovers a couple of things. In that, he found the novel Journey to the Centre of the Earth by Jules Verne. Inside the book, he finds notes written by his brother. So, he goes to his laboratory to find out more information on the notes. There he decides that he must go to Iceland to investigate further. He decides to send Sean back to his mother, but Sean protest it, so he decides to bring Sean with him. They started looking for another volcanologist. When they get to that scientist, they meet his daughter Hannah, who informs them he is dead. She tells them that both her father and Max believed in that book. After some discussion, she offers to help them climb up to the instrument which suddenly started sending data. While hiking the mountain a lightning storm arrives and forces three of them into a cave. Because the lightning storm hit the cave, its entrance got collapses and trapping them inside the cave. So, they do not have any alternative way except to go deeper into the cave, which turns out in an abandoned mine. So, the three of them decide to go deeper into the cave to investigate for Hannah farther and Max into the mine. Suddenly they found a hole in a wall after hitting a trolly on the dead-end of the mine. While investigating the fall into a deep pit, taking them to the "Centre of the Earth". They all continue the travel until they discover a cave that Max lived in. They found some old journal of Max, meanwhile, Hannah discovers Max's dead body. So, they all bury him. At that point, Trevor reads a message from the journal that was written by Max on Sean's 3rd birthday. While reading Max's journal they realize that they must quickly leave, as the temperature is continuously increasing. Trevor figures out that they must find a steam power that can send them to the surface, and it must be done in 48 hours, or all of the water which creates the steam will be gone. Also, must do this before the temperature rises past 135 degrees. They begin by crossing the underground ocean, and suddenly the Trevor and Hannah got separated from Sean. So now Sean's guide is a little bird who has been present since the three of them entered the Centre. After Sean comes closer to the river, he encounters a Tyrannosaurus. Trevor who is searching for him saves by digging a hole in the wall and putting the Tyrannosaurus in a big hole. When they arrive at the river, they found it is dried up and all the water is on the other side of a wall. Trevor uses a flare to fire the magnesium in the wall and take out the water to create a powerful steam pressure to shoot them outside that place. When they throw out from that pit and destroy the home of an Italian man, they found that it was Italy where they have landed. Sean gives him a diamond (which he had found earlier in the caves) for the penalty of the destroyed house. Trevor founds that Sean has many more in his backpack, and they can be used for funding his brother's laboratory. At the end of this movie, Trevor hand over a book titled "Atlantis" on the final day of Sean's visit with him (and Hannah), suggesting they could hang out during Christmas break.

Jules Verne is undoubtedly one of the most prominent authors in science fiction , and its no wonder that his works have inspired countless movie adaptations. One of the most translated writers in human history, the French author has written legendary tales like 20,000 Leagues Under The Sea, Journey to the Center of the Earth, and Around the World in 80 Days . Verne's daring imagination put him far ahead of his time, and it's no surprise that movie studios have sought to replicate his sense of wonder with multiple live-action adaptations of Jules Verne stories .

Jules Verne's work has become the foundation for some of the earliest films in the science fiction genre , some of which even hold up today remarkably well as enjoyable, adventurous romps through the imagination. The mid-to-late 2000s saw a resurgence of Jules Verne films as well, to varying degrees of success, with studios hoping to recapture the joy and nostalgia of the earliest films to adapt Verne's books for a new generation. With so many familiar titles, it's a difficult task to distinguish the very best depictions of Jules Verne's novels over the years.

Journey To The Center Of The Earth

An easily-overlooked made-for-TV movie, the two-part Journey to the Center of the Earth special was a solid attempt at getting to the center of what made Verne's original story so memorable. The film is decidedly slow-moving and low-budgeted, with some creature effects occasionally bordering the precipice of acceptable for a shoestring budget, but the C-List actors can often bring in decent performances amid the campy set-dressing. Despite it's many flaws, the two-part film is an entertaining, knowingly campy jog through Verne's beloved tale of subterranean exploration.

Master Of The World

Master of the World is the sole film to adapt Jules Verne's novel of the same name, and when compared to his other, more well-known stories, it's easy to see why. The narrative of a rich maniac dedicated to the idea of threatening the world's governments into laying down their arms isn't quite as whimsical as Verne's other premises. As for the film, despite rich talent from the likes of a young Charles Bronson and the legendary Vincent Price , the special effects are especially outdated, even for the time period . Master of the World is fun, but not required viewing.

Journey 2: The Mysterious Island

Journey 2: the mysterious island.

Journey 2: The Mysterious Island is the follow-up to 2008's Journey to the Center of the Earth. The film takes place four years after the original, showing Sean Anderson (Josh Hutcherson teaming up with Hank, his stepfather, to find his lost grandfather. Due to scheduling issues, Brendan Fraser wasn't able to return as Trevor Anderson but was replaced by Dwayne Johnson as the film's lead.

This semi-adaptation picks up where 2008's Journey to the Center of the Earth left off, replacing Brendan Fraser with Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson. As the passable action adventure delves into the incredible isle, the tone rides a strange line, at once too scary for younger viewers and too subdued for older ones. Amid mediocre CGI and all-too subdued performances, the best thing that can be said about Journey 2: The Mysterious Island was how it pioneered the art of throwing Johnson into a jungle, later done better in films like Jungle Cruise and Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle .

Around The World In 80 Days

Though the idea of circumnavigating the globe in the span of 80 days is now a triviality, in Verne's time, such a time was the stuff of science fiction. The 1956 take on the story is an incredibly grand adventure comedy with a runtime that feels nearly as long as the titular journey itself. The international cast is crammed with stars of Hollywood's Golden Age , who had enough charisma between them to earn the film an early Academy Award for Best Picture. Today, the spectacle and aged humor can be best appreciated as a museum of 50s stardom.

Starring a young Josh Hutcherson and Brendan Fraser, still hot off the success of The Mummy trilogy , 2008's Journey To The Center Of The Earth had all the makings of an action-adventure hit. Being the first to truly update one of Verne's classic stories with modern special effects, the film still looks great 15 years later, even if it is marred by several obvious moments clearly meant to be enjoyed in the context of a 3-D theater. Adapting the classic adventure about as well as it could have, Journey To The Center Of The Earth isn't revolutionary, but undeniably fun.

While most adaptations of Verne's work make at least some departures from the source material, 2004's Around The World In 80 Days completely re-imagines the story as a raucous action-comedy. Though critically-panned at the time, the film is endlessly re-watchable today , with eye-popping action choreography courtesy of Jackie Chan's Passepartout and deadpan comedic timing from Steve Coogan's Phineas Fogg. If the anachronisms and deviations from Verne's novel can be forgiven, Around The World In 80 Days is a creative globe-trotting adventure that doesn't get the respect it deserves.

There's simply no replicating the cheesy fun of the original Journey To The Center Of The Earth , an earnest science fiction adventure movie that wears its heart on its sleeve. The special effects are certainly dated, but it's hard not to wring a certain level of charm out of the delicately hand-painted backgrounds and practical lizardman costumes. Beyond the addition of the deliciously dastardly villain, Count Saknussemm, the film is also one of the most faithful to Verne's work, a commendable effort in and of itself.

The Mysterious Island

The Mysterious Island is one of Jules Verne's lesser-known stories, but the 1961 film of the same name takes every advantage of the novel's conceits. Following a group of Union soldiers in the Civil War who escape prison in a hot air balloon only to wash up on a bizarre uncharted island, the film's sense of tension only ever dials up, as the heroes contend with grimy human pirates and giant fauna rendered by the talent of stop-motion legend Ray Harryhausen . Not the deepest narrative, this thrilling tale of danger holds up decades later remarkably well as a harrowing odyssey.

20,000 Leagues Under The Sea

One of Disney's earliest forays into live-action storytelling, 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea presented the aquatic crew of the Nautilus with untold dangers then-undreamed of by 50s audiences. Beyond the great creature and sci-fi technology designs that still hold up today, the film offers substantially more heart than most other Verne adaptations, taking the time to acclimate the viewer with its intrepid adventurers. It's no wonder that 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea was influential enough to earn a spot as a Disneyland mainstay even seven decades after its original release.

General Electric's 132-year journey from American manufacturing icon to fallen giant

• General Electric was an icon of American innovation and manufacturing for most of its history.
• The company reached its peak in 2000, but had a rocky journey entering the 21st century.
• In April, GE finished splitting its remaining divisions into three stand-alone, publicly traded companies.

Over the course of the 20th century, General Electric grew into a powerhouse — literally — of American industry.

Founded by Thomas Edison, the company expanded into everything from appliances to broadcasting, jet engines to computing. It became a household name for millions of consumers.

But a series of financial missteps in the early 21st century shook GE to its core, and it announced that it would break up its operations into three separate companies. That process concluded on April 2, 2024, with all three of its separate entities now publicly trading on exchanges.

Here's a timeline of GE's long and storied history.

1889-1892: Edison General Electric

In 1879, inventor Thomas Edison patented the incandescent light bulb after his laboratory tested 3,000 designs over two years . 

By 1889, Thomas Edison had formed Edison General Electric from a handful of electricity companies he'd been operating.

Three years later, Edison merged his company with the Thomson-Houston Electric Company, and The General Electric Company was formed.

1896: The Dow Jones Industrial Average

Just four years after its formation, General Electric became one of the original 12 companies to be a part of the Dow Jones Industrial Average.

GE was included, on and off, for most of its existence until June 2018 , when it was replaced by Walgreens Boots Alliance as one of the current 30 companies included.

The roaring '20s: New technologies

GE began making electric home appliances in 1922, such as the first electric stoves, washing machines, and refrigerators. And in 1927, GE developed the first television. 

1940s and 1950s: Mid-century modern

GE built the first American jet engine in 1941, and in 1957, opened the first nuclear power plant near Pittsburgh, which stayed open until 1982.

1981-2001: The Welch years

GE's best-known CEO, Jack Welch, took over in 1981 and kicked off a frenzy of sales and acquisitions that reshaped the American corporate landscape.

One of his biggest acquisitions in 1986 – RCA, which owned NBC – advanced Welch's goal of taking GE beyond manufacturing to become  a "boundary-less" business .

By the time Welch stepped down in 2001, GE had grown to a nearly $130 billion behemoth.

2001-2017: Troubled times

GE's next CEO, Jeffrey Immelt, was hand-picked by Welch and took over as the company's market capitalization was declining from its peak of more than $450 billion.

A lot happened during Immelt's 16 years running GE.

The 2008 financial crisis dealt a huge blow to the company: Its stock fell 42% in 2008 , forcing GE to rethink its operations. Warren Buffett even stepped in and invested $3 billion to keep the company afloat.

GE quickly sold off some of its biggest past money-makers, like NBCUniversal, GE Plastics, and GE Water, and the selloff continued with financial services in 2014, home appliances in 2016, and oil and gas in 2017.

In spite of the company's performance, Immelt maintained a pair of private corporate jets without telling GE's board of directors. The day Immelt announced his retirement, June 12, 2017, GE stock went up 4%.

Although Welch publicly supported Immelt, he later admitted to other GE executives that the choice was one of his biggest mistakes, according to Fox Business .

2017-2018: John Flannery's stint as CEO

John Flannery, the head of GE's health care business, took over after Immelt after having been with the company for 30 years.

He served as CEO for 14 months before being removed in October 2018 by a unanimous vote from the board of directors, receiving an exit package worth $10 million .

The company lost over $100 billion in market value during his tenure.

2018-2021: A leaner manufacturer

Since Larry Culp took over in 2018, GE has been steadily reducing its debts and selling off parts of its business.

The years were not without controversy however, as a whistleblower accused the company of accounting fraud in 2019. Those claims did not appear to have merit.

In November 2021, the company said it would spin off its remaining three business divisions — aviation, healthcare and power — into separate publicly traded companies.

"This is the best way to fully realize the potential of these businesses," Culp told the Wall Street Journal .

2024: The official end of the old GE as people knew it

GE's breakup was fully consummated on April 2, 2024, when two of the three split-up portions of the company began trading on the New York Stock Exchange as separate entities for the first time.

The GE Corporation was restructured as GE Aerospace, with Culp as its CEO, while the company's energy operations, which include its power generation and electrification divisions, were spun off into GE Vernova.

GE Healthcare, which develops hospital equipment and software, had previously begun trading on the Nasdaq in January of 2023.

"With the successful launch of three independent, public companies now complete — today marks a historic final step in the multi-year transformation of GE," Culp said in a statement .

Hi Everyone I'm just looking to get a count of how many fellow members are scheduled to have an interview this month in Moscow!

My finance has her interview scheduled for the 19th of this month! She is a bit on edge... and a bit pessimistic that she will receive the visa and will be with me in a month.

She hears a he/she say of people not passing the interview.... and so on. I tell her judging from VJ community not 1 person has been rejected for Russia!

So what you guys think? Any last advices?

How about those in the same situations as me? Are you ready for the task at hand? Any preparation queues?

MY wife should schedule one within next month

Here is my story. I've lived problem free life, payed my taxes. One day I decided to marry this girl. But to do so would require her to come to US of A, and so it started. My problem free live turned in to free problems from USCIS! Sure things turned to unsure, certain dates turned to aproximation within months. All logical thinking was out the door, as I filed my papers withing famous Vermont Centre!

My fiance had her interview on May 28th. While I do not have the exact details I believe that she had a fairly positive experience. My advice is to ensure you have plenty of documentation in regards to your affidavit of support and proof of your ongoing relationship. Finally she should relax and feel confident.

While i am sure that there are some rejections it seems that almost everyone That I have have met on this site has passed there interviews. The worst case scenario was that the visa was delayed in a few instances but eventually granted.

We had our interview on Wednesday and had our visa in hand by Saturday. She waited in Moscow with her son for her Visa. It was faster than I expected. She should arrive with her son this Friday. Good luck to all of you June interviewees ! May you be reunited soon !

My fiancee is in Moscow now. Her interview is scheduled for tomorrow, June 2. I am uncertain if either her or her son will receive a visa. She gets frustrated easily and her son is very quiet and shy. She is going to the Embassy with the wrong attitude. She thinks they treat all Russian girls badly at the interview. It has taken a long time to get to this point and it's a bit nerve racking. In a few days I'll find out what happened...

My Irina is going for her interview this Friday June 6. The things that we did was to make sure that all of the paperwork was correct and that I gave her all of the sample questions that they could ask at the interview and the answers as it applies to us. She then went to her English teacher and they practiced answering the questions in English.

I have my fingers crossed for all of us going through this process.

Putting the clock back by Centuries

The journey into Russia has been described as the crossing of the boundary from one economic system, Capitalism, into another, Communism.  But this description is too simple, for each country has a different type of Capitalism.

German Capitalism, which is almost a State Socialism or, as a German banker described it to me, “a Socialist State run by capitalists,” is totally different from American Capitalism, where the State has up to recently kept aloof from business, and where the Government which rules least is considered the Government which rules best.  French Capitalism, in which the Government has great control over finance and makes finance a tool of politics, is totally different from British Capitalism, where finance is more independent of politics and where the national income is less evenly distributed than in France.

Nor is Russia the land of Communism.  Any Communist would refute this, and say that the Soviet Union is only building up Communism, and that Communist classless society will not be brought into being for many years.

 West to East 

A journey into Russia is, therefore, not journey from clear-cut Capitalism into clear-cut Communism.  It is rather a journey from Europe into Asia into Russia is, therefore, from a Western civilization into an Eastern civilisation.  It is a journey back several centuries.  Russia never had the Reformation, which affected so deeply the life of Wales.  Russia is now in the middle of her Industrial Revolution, which Britain went through over a century ago.  The effects of the French Revolution were slight.  Russia only abolished serfdom in 1881.  The fight for freedom which created the free British and French characters had been crushed.  Thus Russia remains Asia, although territorially in Europe.  It is Asiatic in the past and present poverty and in the fatalism of its peasants.

Such were my thoughts as the Russian frontier came nearer.  My companions had different ideas.  They were all Communists who had fled from Canada or America and expected to find perfect conditions in the Communist State of Russia. They felt embittered at capitalism.  One of them was a Hungarian who had lived in Canada and been arrested by the police and sentenced without a trial.  Finally he was deported.  Where was he to go?  If he went back to Hungary he would be hanged as a Communist.  So he came to Russia, where, he said, the working class had built for themselves a magnificent fatherland.

Foreign Deportees 

His case was typical of other foreign deportees from Canada and America- victims of the depression.  These workers coming from Hungary or Poland scrape up a few dollars, travel steerage to immigration offices and after weeks or months of confinement are deported.  They make their way to Soviet Russia.  There were many of these men bitter with capitalism on the train.  When we crossed the Soviet frontier they raised a cheer.  “Now, boys, we’re safe in the land without unemployment,” they said. 

We looked out of the train.  They were delighted with everything they saw.  The slightest building was exaggerated in their imagination into a Socialist triumph.  We arrived in Moscow, and indeed there was little in the centre of the city which America lose their jobs, sleep in the American parks, are finally seized by, could disillusion them [SIC - this sentence is meaningless in the original].  The children looked well fed and most of the people had warm clothes and sufficient footwear.  The, streets had improved greatly and several new buildings were in course of construction.  My first impression was good.  I had forgotten one thing [this line missing at end of page of article]… in the whole of the Soviet Union is collected for the capital city. 

A Contrast 

No greater contrast could be found than the feelings of those who left Russia the same time as I did several weeks later.  These were American workers, who had come two and a half years earlier, expecting to find good conditions.  They now cursed the Soviet Government with all the vituperation they could command.  Their American passports had been taken away from them in order to make it difficult for them to leave Russia. 

It was only through the efforts of an American journalist that they had received their passports.  Their two sons had lived on a collective farm and had had nothing but potatoes and cattle fodder for six months. 

They said: “No one wants to work.  No one cares whether the machines are smashed or neglected.  In the factory where I was, almost 100 per cent of the workers are against the Government.  The workers are too weak to do real work.  Now they are afraid of losing their jobs because in some factories up to 50 per cent of a the workers have been dismissed.” 

When I heard the other workers in the train, Germans and Italians, talk of their experiences in Soviet factories and saw their joy when the Soviet frontier was passed I thought of the hope of the deportees as they entered the Soviet Union, and wondered how they were faring in that Asiatic country which had tried in vain to catch up many centuries of industrialism in the brief span of five years.
