Howard Graham, an American armaments engineer working with the Turkish Navy, writes a letter to his wife Stephanie, explaining the perilous circumstances that led to their recent separation in Istanbul: While en route to the United States, the Grahams stop in Istanbul and are met by S. Kopeikin, a Turkish employee of Graham's company, who under the pretense of discussing business, takes Graham to a nightclub. There Graham meets the Eurasian dancer Josette Maretl and her partner Gogo. When a bullet meant for Graham kills the nightclub's magician instead, Colonel Haki, the head of the Turkish secret police, comes to investigate. Haki is concerned for Graham's safety because the engineer has irreplaceable knowledge about the armament needs of the Turkish Navy, and consequently, his demise would mean a delay in arming the Navy. After showing Graham a photograph of Peter Banat, an assassin hired to kill him by the Nazi agent Muller, Haki tells Graham that he has arranged safe passage for him aboard a tramp steamer bound for Batumi. When Graham protests being separated from Stephanie, Haki assures him that he will accompany her to Batumi. At dockside, Kopeikin bids Graham farewell and presents him with a pistol, which Graham then hides under his mattress. On board the ship, Graham meets his fellow passengers: Josette and Gogo; Kuvetli, a Turkish tobacco salesman; Professor Haller, an archeologist; and Madame Mathews and her socialist husband. Lonely and frightened, Graham is befriended by Josette. When the ship makes its first stop, Graham cables Stephanie to meet him in Batumi on Saturday. After the ship leaves the port, Graham is alerted to the arrival of a new passenger by the musical strains of a record player, and Haller warns him that Kuvetli is not who he claims to be. At dinner that night, the new passenger joins Graham at his table, and the engineer recognizes him as Peter Banat. Panicked, Graham tells the ship's captain that there is an assassin on board, but the captain thinks that he is demented and laughs in his face. Upon discovering that his gun is missing, Graham turns to Josette for help. After listening to Graham's story, Josette offers to have Gogo detain Banat in a card game while Graham searches his cabin. When Graham returns to his own cabin, he is met by Haller, who identifies himself as Muller. Haller offers to spare Graham's life if the engineer will delay his return to the States for six weeks. Explaining that the Germans seek only a postponement in the communication of Graham's recommendations for arming the Turkish Navy, Haller suggests that he check into a hospital with a case of "typhoid." Before departing, Haller informs Graham that Kuvetli is a Turkish agent sent by Haki. After Haller leaves, Kuvetli contacts Graham and instructs him to consent to Haller's plan. Kuvetli also tells Graham that when the ship docks in Batumi, he should hide while the Turkish agent arranges for the arrest of Haller and Banat. Graham follows Kuvetli's instructions and agrees to Haller's terms, but when he goes to contact the Turk, he discovers the agent has been murdered and hears the familiar strains of a musical recording. Desperate, Graham asks Mathews to deliver a message to the Turkish counsel. Mathews agrees and offers Graham a pocket knife and an umbrella for protection. When the boat docks, Banat and Haller escort Graham ashore and into a waiting car. As they are driving, one of the car's tires goes flat, and when the driver leaves his seat to examine the tire, Graham sticks the pocket knife into the horn, causing it to sound. During the ensuing commotion, Graham jumps into the driver's seat, crashes the car into a store window and escapes his captors. Then as a storm rages that night, Graham runs into a hotel and joins his wife in her room, but finds Haller and Banat waiting for him. Thinking that Haller is a representative from her husband's company, Stephanie leaves them to discuss business while she joins Haki for a drink in the hotel bar. Soon after, Gogo, who has been trying to make a deal with Graham for Josette's "services," knocks on his hotel room door. When Gogo opens the door, Banat shoots at him, sending him scurrying to the lobby for help. Graham uses the diversion to jump out the window onto the cornice of the building, where he is followed by Haller and Banat. At that moment, Haki appears on the ledge and shoots Haller. Banat then wounds Haki and turns his gun on Graham. Blinded by the rain, Banat misses his target, and after emptying his pistol, the two men struggle and Banat falls from the ledge to his death. Safe in the hotel, Graham finishes writing the letter to his wife that he began on board the ship, and when Haki tells him that Stephanie is waiting for him upstairs, Graham tears up the now completed letter and joins her.

Before the opening credits or film title appear, a fat man, later identified as the assassin, "Peter Banat," places a silencer on his gun as a broken phonograph record playing "C'est mon couer" is heard on the soundtrack. According to pre-production news items in Hollywood Reporter , RKO paid $10,000 in frozen British funds for the rights to English author Eric Ambler's novel. An April 1941 news item notes that Ben Hecht was slated to script the film and David Hempstead to produce. A February 1941 Hollywood Reporter news item adds that Michele Morgan was to star and Robert Stevenson to direct. Hempstead originally wanted Fred Astaire to play the lead, but later considered Robert Montgomery and Fred MacMurray. By early July 1941, according to a Hollywood Reporter news item, studio chief George J. Schaefer was trying to convince Orson Welles to act in and direct the film, but Welles was wavering between working on this film and Louisiana Hayride , a story about Huey Long, which was never made. By mid-July 1941, Hollywood Reporter news items identified Journey into Fear as an Orson Welles project, with Welles slated to produce and direct under his Mercury Productions banner. Ellis St. Joseph and Richard Collins were to write the script for the film, which now was to star Joseph Cotten, who, according to Hollywood Reporter , was being groomed for stardom after his appearance in Citizen Kane . The picture was to fulfill part of Welles's four-picture commitment to RKO. A September 1941 tentative shooting schedule contained in the RKO Archive Script Files at the UCLA Arts-Special Collections Library lists Welles as director, but by the time the production began in January 1942, Norman Foster was credited as director. According to a news item in Hollywood Reporter , by late January 1942, Welles's part in the film had been condensed to three to four days of intensive filming so that he could leave for Brazil on 5 February to begin production on It's All True . While rushing to finish this film, Welles was also completing The Magnificent Ambersons . In a modern interview, Welles stated that because he was in a hurry to leave for South America, the ledge sequence at the end of the film was directed by whomever was closest to the camera. Welles said, "For the first five sequences, I was on the set and decided the angles; from then on, I often said where to put the camera and described the framing, made light tests....I designed the film but can't properly be called the director." A news item in Hollywood Reporter adds that Welles also worked on the script with Joseph Cotten, but Welles is not credited onscreen for his contribution.        On March 6, 1942, six days before production was completed, a Hollywood Reporter news item reported that the raw footage was to be flown to Rio de Janiero for Welles to edit. According to another Hollywood Reporter item, the film was in the final dubbing and editing stage by May 1942, under the supervision of Jack Moss, Welles's Mercury Productions partner. Moss also played the role of "Banat" in the film. By June 1942, however, George J. Schaefer, the studio head who brought Welles to Hollywood, had been ousted and replaced by Charles Koerner, a pragmatic theater manager who, according to the New York Times , stressed "showmanship rather than genius." By the end of June 1942, the Koerner regime notified Welles that his contract with the studio had been terminated and he was to return from Brazil. In early July 1942, a news item in Hollywood Reporter reported that the studio had confiscated Journey into Fear , which was now being edited "without the benefit of those who worked on the picture." In late Aug, according to another Hollywood Reporter news item, the studio decided to delay the release of the picture after the critics panned it at a tradeshow. A New York Times article adds that as part of his final settlement with the studio, Welles agreed to recut the last reel and film some additional scenes. Materials contained in the Script Files reveal that Welles added Cotten's voice-over scenes at the beginning and end of the picture and devised the pre-credit sequence.        According to an article in New York Times and an unidentified contemporary source in the AMPAS production files, several of the actors in the film were employees of Mercury Productions. Robert Meltzer, who played the ship's captain, was a writer at Mercury. Shifra Haran, who played "Mrs. Haller," was Welles's personal secretary. Herb Drake and Bill Roberts, who played the ship's stewards, worked in Mercury's publicity department, and Welles's chauffeur, Eddie Howard, appeared in a bit role. Modern sources credit George J. Schaefer as the film's executive producer. In 1976, a Canadian production company produced another version of Ambler's novel, directed by Daniel Mann and starring Sam Waterston, Zero Mostel and Yvette Mimieux. According to an article in Los Angeles Times , in 1966, Ambler was working on a television series based on his book to be produced by Joan Harrison and starring Jeff Hunter. That series was never made.

Journey into Fear (1943 film)

Journey into Fear is a 1943 American spy film noir directed by Norman Foster , based on the 1940 Eric Ambler novel of the same name . [1] The film broadly follows the plot of the book, but the protagonist was changed to an American engineer, and the destination of his journey changed from France to the Soviet Union - reflecting the changes in the war situation since the original Ambler book was written (France was occupied, the US and Soviet Union joined the war and became allies). [2] The RKO Pictures release stars Joseph Cotten , who also wrote the screenplay with Orson Welles . The Mercury Production was also produced by Welles, again uncredited.

In 2005, an alternate cut was shown at a Welles film retrospective at the Locarno International Film Festival in Switzerland. It was the original European release print, lacking the narration and ending of the US version but including about six minutes of footage deleted by RKO Pictures .

In an opening scene before the credits, the assassin Banat is seen preparing a gun while a gramophone sticks as it plays. The story that follows is the narrative of a letter from Howard Graham, an American armaments engineer, to his wife Stephanie. While journeying to the Soviet port of Batumi to return to the United States to complete his business with the Turkish Navy , Graham and his wife stop in Istanbul and are met by Kopeikin, a Turkish employee of Graham's company. Under the pretense of discussing business, he takes Graham to a nightclub to introduce him to the dancer Josette Maretl and her partner Gogo. Banat tries unsuccessfully to kill Graham during a magic act but shoots the magician instead. Graham is brought to the headquarters of the Turkish secret police for questioning, where Colonel Haki blames the assassination attempt on German agents seeking to delay the rearming of Turkish ships.

The colonel shows Graham a photograph of Banat, who he says was hired by a Nazi agent named Muller. Haki then orders Graham to travel secretly to Batumi aboard a tramp steamer, and Haki personally oversees the safe overland transit of Stephanie.

Graham's fellow passengers include Josette and Gogo; Kuvetli, an ingratiating Turkish tobacco salesman; Professor Haller, an apolitical German archeologist; and the henpecked Matthews and his French wife. Josette sees that Graham is frightened. Not knowing that he is married, she tries to become close to him. At an interim port call, Graham is made aware of the arrival of a new passenger by the annoying clamor of a gramophone. Haller warns him that Kuvetli is not who he claims to be. At dinner, Graham recognizes Banat and tries to persuade the ship's captain and purser to put him ashore, but they believe that he is crazy. Graham turns to Josette for help. She has Gogo engage Banat in a poker game while Graham unsuccessfully searches Banat's cabin for the assassin's gun.

When Graham returns to his own cabin, he is met by an armed Haller. Graham deduces that he is actually Muller, who offers to spare Graham's life by delaying his return to the US for six weeks by having him taken to a hospital with a case of " typhus ." Muller warns him that Kuvetli is a Turkish agent sent by Haki and warns Graham that he will be killed if he confides the plan to the Turk.

Kuvetli was eavesdropping from the next cabin, however, and informs Graham that Muller's "plan" is just a scheme to get Graham away from the ship before he murders him. Kuvetli instructs Graham to pretend to agree to the plan but, before the ship docks in Batumi, to hide himself in an empty cabin while the Turkish agent arranges for the arrest of the German agents.

When Graham goes to the empty cabin, he finds Kuvetli dead on the floor, murdered by Banat. Graham asks Mathews to deliver a message to the Turkish consul in Batumi to notify Haki. Matthews gives the unarmed Graham a pocketknife . Graham runs into Gogo, who bluntly offers to "give up" Josette for Graham to marry for a cash consideration.

Muller and Banat coerce Graham into a waiting car. When the car has a flat tire, Graham jams Matthews' pocketknife into the horn and, in the ensuing commotion, jumps into the driver's seat, crashes the car into a shop window, and escapes. That night, as a storm rages, Graham joins his wife at their hotel, but Muller arrives there first by impersonating a coworker from Graham's company.

Banat intimidates Graham from leaving and Muller persuades Stephanie to join Haki downstairs while he "talks business" with Graham. He leaves Graham to be killed by Banat, but Gogo enters the room to promote his deal for Josette and Banat shoots at him. Graham flees out of the room's window onto the cornice of the building in the torrential rain, pursued by Banat and Muller. Trapped between them, he is saved when Haki appears and shoots Muller. Banat wounds Haki but, blinded by the rain, misses Graham. The two struggle, and Banat falls to his death. Back in the present, Haki tells Graham as he finishes the letter that Stephanie is waiting for him but wonders why the engineer took decisive action when he had been so indecisive earlier. Graham tears up the now-completed letter and tells Haki, "I got mad. Spent too much time running away."

RKO bought the film rights to the novel in 1941 intending to use it as a vehicle for Michèle Morgan . [5] Morgan's intended American debut Joan of Paris was postponed; Ben Hecht was signed to write the script, Robert Stevenson was to direct and David Hempstead to produce. [6] Fred Astaire was discussed as the male lead. [7] Dennis O'Keefe was also discussed. [8]

Eventually Joseph Cotten was assigned the lead on the basis of his performance in Citizen Kane . [9]

In July, Stevenson was assigned to another movie, resulting in Morgan doing Joan of Paris after all. [10]

In July 1941 it was announced that Orson Welles would play a lead role and direct the film. [11] He would do this following completion of his second movie, The Magnificent Ambersons , and aimed to do it before commencing on It's All True . [12]

Welles disregarded Hecht's script and wrote a new one with Joseph Cotten. He also brought in Jack Moss from Paramount as producer. [13]

Welles's involvement saw the addition to the cast of other people from his stock company, such as Ruth Warrick, Agnes Moorehead and Everett Sloane. Morgan was no longer associated with the film, being replaced by Dolores del Río.

Welles's work on Ambersons would mean that ultimately, he was unable to direct the movie. He gave the job to Norman Foster , who had impressed Welles with his screenwriting work on It's All True . [14] [15]

Journey into Fear was in production January 6 – March 12, 1942. [3] The director was Norman Foster. Peter Bogdanovich later asked Welles if he had anything to do with directing the scene on the building ledge. "Well, we all did—whoever was nearest the camera, there was no other way to get it made, because of the difficulties", Welles said. "It was a terrible situation." The cast and crew had all been working for 24 hours to complete Welles's scenes before he departed for Brazil, to film It's All True . "It was a collaborative effort", Welles said. [16] :   165

Welles did produce and design the picture and wrote the script with Joseph Cotten. Welles's main contribution as producer was the opening sequence in which the assassin listens to an old gramophone record while loading his gun. Welles said that at the time he thought he was the first to come up with a scene before the titles begin. He later learned that Lewis Milestone had done it in Of Mice and Men , a film Welles hadn't seen. [16] :   166

Modern filmographies acknowledge Welles's contributions as director, producer and screenwriter. [16] :   377   [17] :   306

During the film's post-production, Welles was fired by RKO and his Mercury unit told to leave the studio. The film was edited without Welles's involvement. [18] [19]

According to Mark Robson, " They made an incomplete film; that is to say, the film was finished but it had no finish. It had wonderful things in it, but it also had much that was very silly." Robson says he "was on very good terms with" Welles "and asked him if I could try to put Journey into Fear back into some continuity that would please him. He agreed and I did. He was quite pleased with the results and only then consented to come in and make a finish to the picture." [20]

According to RKO records, the film made a loss of $193,000. [21]

Turner Home Entertainment released the film on laserdisc in 1989 and on VHS (Cat. No. 2049) in 1991. It has been released on DVD in Italy.

A remake was released in 1975.

In an auction April 26, 2014, a script of Journey into Fear was sold for $7,500 [22] and a collection of approximately 180 stills and production photos sold for $2,375. [23] The materials were among those found in boxes and trunks of Welles's personal possessions by his daughter Beatrice Welles . [24]

“It all began that night we arrived in Istanbul.”

It’s hard to know exactly what to make of Journey into Fear . There’s something tentative about it, as if it’s a sketch or a dress rehearsal rather than a true film. The reasons Nazi agents are after American ballistics expert Howard Graham (Joseph Cotten) are a bit vague. Their object is to kill him, and he’s lucky they’re such bumblers because they blow so many opportunities.

Because our hero is an innocent American played by Cotten falling into a nest of snakes while abroad, the film is like a warmup for The Third Man . Orson Welles’s Colonel Haki pops up now and then just as his Harry Lime does in Carol…

"Who ever heard of a simple Turkish businessman?"

An Orson Welles production -- based on a spy novel -- edited and completed without Welles' consent. The story of that is really interesting, a messy dive into Hollywood politics of the 1940s. I won't get into it here but I suggest you read about it a little. Norman Foster directs, instead.

The film itself is quite odd. First, it's abnormally short, like literally less than 70 minutes. In some ways that's refreshing; it really moves and there is not a wasted second. The set-up is fast, characters fly in without much introduction; I can kind of feel how this would sound on the radio from Welles, not dissimilar from the film…

Good B-potboiler from Mr. Moto director Norman Foster for Welles’ Mercury Productions. Star Joseph Cotten adapted Eric Ambler’s well-known thriller about an American Navy officer who escapes a Nazi assassin by stealing away on a boat, only to find he has also boarded. A solid noir-ish tale with memorable overtones—the scratchy 78 the dumpy Nazi plays, Dolores del Rio’s leopard dance, a final rain-soaked shoot-out on the side of a hotel. Cotten has been better, but he’s fine here, while Welles plays a small but pivotal role as Turkish police captain Colonel Haki. Enjoyable stuff, when taken for what it truly is.

Joseph Cotten displays strong John Mulaney energy when he doesn’t wanna go to a secondary location, reacts to a murder by saying, “I gotta call my wife!” and wears three piece suits like he was born in one, but that’s kind of where the similarities end.

Journey Into Fear (1943) has some incredibly haunting scenes along with a lot of incredible pedestrian moments. Felt like there was two different visions trying to get along. Creates a rather frustrating feeling since you can see how good this could be, yet how the plot is driven doesn't deliver on it's potential.

Yet another Welles' picture (not directed by but very much shaped by) chopped up by the studio. I get why this doesn't *really* work because it's obviously torn up, but this is filled with fantastic actors in a strange 70-minute trip. As bizarre as the edit is, it's brisk and maintains this dreamy potboiler boiling. Making due with what we have, it could really be a lot worse.

Eric Ambler didn’t invent the espionage novel, but by adding cynicism into the recipe, he transformed the thriller and was the greatest influence on Graham Greene, Ian Fleming, and John Le Carré.

In 1939 and 1940, Ambler released two transformative novels, The Mask of Dimitrios and Journey into Fear , set in the seedy, liminal margins of Europe on the eve of war. Both were adapted in to excellent films and both featured a Turkish secret police chief named Colonel Haki who’s as suave and sinister and as irresistible to women as Orson Welles and with “a somewhat vultural air” in Ambler’s great description. Both feature typical Ambler Wrong Man heroes, sophisticated innocents, for which Joseph Cotton is perfect.

Having just read the book, seeing this highly studio-compromised film version made me appreciate its slow build of suspense a lot more, since this movie isn't afforded that luxury and thus loses a lot of the thematic meat about the mind-wrenching fear that accompanies the realization (and its aftermath) that someone is trying to kill you.

This is still a wildly entertaining movie though, and miles ahead of the usual B-thriller product (which I happen to love, but never mind). The fact that this won't be your usual Norman Foster joint is abundantly clear very early on, during an awkward dinner between Joseph Cotten, Ruth Warrick, and Everett Sloane, which captures with delicious detail two very tired people trying to…

I'm a sucker for any mystery that has a magic show as a setpiece-- and this has one of the greats-- but at 69 minutes short one can feel the cuts that keep this pleasingly brisk and light doing so at the expense of creating a more effectively dramatic and character driven film. What a performance by Joseph Cotten, though, remaining composed and rather stoic* while the world around him turns into a hall of mirrors/pit of vipers as he is forced into assuming the role of an accidental spy. I would have loved to see Cotten play James Bond.

*The way he lets the French "socialist" (quotes because the guy admits he only claims it to annoy his wife) give him an umbrella for self-defense without telling the guy off is a masterclass in stoneface comedic timing.

I never mind the obvious severe cuts as it is barely been there plotwise feeds into the movie nightmare paranoid logic. The best scenes are great fun and make up for Foster never doing m,ore than marking time between them. I love that the great climax play as unintentional Ambersons commentary.

Journey Into Fear

Classic Film Noir exposes the myths by which we fulfil our desires — sex — murder — and the family unit.

Journey Into Fear (1943)

journey into fear movie cast

The film was based on a popular Eric Amber novel, the rights of which RKO had bought in 1941 intending to use it as a vehicle for Michèle Morgan.

Ben Hecht was signed to write the script, and Robert Stevenson was to direct and David Hempstead to produce. Fred Astaire was discussed as the male lead —  as was Dennis O'Keefe.

Eventually Joseph Cotten was assigned the lead on the basis of his performance in Citizen Kane. and in July 1941 it was announced that Orson Welles would play a lead role and direct the film, following completion of his second movie, The Magnificent Ambersons. So Orson Welles was on board!

The hand of Welles is visible across the finished film, and of course Welles' disregarded Hecht's script and wrote a new one with Joseph Cotten.

Welles's involvement saw the addition to the cast of other people from his stock company, such as Ruth Warrick, Agnes Moorehead and Everett Sloane.

Morgan was no longer associated with the film, being replaced by Dolores del Río. As he was ultimately unable to direct the movie, Welles gave the job to Norman Foster — although the Welles' touch remains.

Possibly one of the most Wellesian aspect of the finished version of Journey Into Fear (1943) is how the film is carried by the supporting cast. This is typical of so many Orson Welles productions, notably Mr Arkadin (1955) .

In Journey into Fear , the closed set on which much of the action takes place is a ship — and the characters on board form an incredible human menagerie of various sorts, sinister, vaguely comic, or simply guignol in the rather grotesque manner of a sombre human comedy.

journey into fear movie cast

Journey Into Fear (1943) is an early example of the full-on film noir style at play. It features a quite new at the time brilliant visual style which includes extreme camera angles, overhead shots, and scenes of night and rain.

journey into fear movie cast

It is not obvious that Journey Into Fear is a classic film noir, like the large numbers of examples of the style that Hollywood made between 1944 and the early 1950s.

Instead, and because of the themes of espionage and intrigue, which do not seem to be backed up with any noir psychology or a similar tale of a weakened male lead thrust into an unsure world, it maybe feels like this is a film on the pathway to the full evolution of noir.

In its film noir favour Journey Into Fear (1943) does generate a pleasing amount of paranoia en route to its window ledge climax. Perhaps paranoia is not quite the correct description — because Joseph Cotten's character Howard Graham is well aware of the assassination plot against him — and has good reason to worry about what is round every corner, behind every door, and within every pocket.

The world this American is in, which is from the start Istanbul, is so disconcerting and strange, and it's a world where rules are different — of course they seem arbitrary — especially when iterated and administrated by Orson Welles' character — predictably larger than life — Colonle Haki of the Turkish secret police.

Welles booms and blusters and wears a dramatic hat. He makes all the Welles' moves, and with the addition of the Mercury Theatre supporting cast, the oblique and novel camera work, the wonderful alienation created by strange rules, behaviours, words, signs and a hell of a lot of rain — and the script re-write which he shared with Joseph Cotten — this is very much an Orson Welles movie it —  moves like it and feels like it sounds like it — a film noir feel despite the subject matter.

Journey Into Fear is a spy movie, and this was a well established form which rose and flourished and burst out many films in the early days of World War II, both in England and the United States —  although there had been terrible many good spy films in the 1930s, not least from Alfred Hitchcock.

The espionage films form an equivalent tradition, and definitely influenced the rising style of film noir, not in the least for their darkness, fogs, violence and sense of mystery.

Mike Grost: Like many spy movies, Journey Into Fear is set abroad. Also like many spy films, it involves a chase over a great swath of territory, unlike many film noirs, which often take place within a single US city.

The hero of an espionage thriller is usually unambiguous — he fights with the Nazis, or whichever enemy is in play. The hero of an espionage thriller does not make the film noir journey, whether a journey of redemption or a descent.

Further, an espionage hero does not normally have the same flaws as a film noir hero, and although he may be weakened by circumstances, does not habitually struggle with morality, usually knowing what to do. So although an espionage hero works in the shadows and deals blows to villainy where they can, an espionage hero is not usually on a fateful decline, or is even in the fashion of many a noir cop, a rogue or corrupt individual.

Ideologically neutral scenes take place near the finale where the action moves into the Soviet Union. Here the movie does neither endorse nor condemn Communism. Welles' political line was that he was a Roosevelt Democrat, and he seems to have politically consistent as a liberal Democrat throughout his career.

Early on, Journey Into Fear delivers the character of a magician, played by Hans Conried — the actor who famously voiced Captain Hook in the Disney Peter Pan. Welles adored magic and performed it well himself, touring with a stage magic act.

Look also here for a good performance by Mexican cinema great Dolores Del Rio as the most mysterious and attractive passenger on the freighter, destined to aid Jospeh Cotten in his fight for life, and unravel the mysteries of the floating mis en scene.

Another certain Welles touch is the addition of a musical menace with a killer-theme on the soundtrack to Journey Into Fear, where the little killer obsessively plays a scratchy old 78 rpm disc of the song Chagrin d'Amour  — which literally becomes a stuck record even the film begins.

The assassin is a comically threatening figure, made scarier by the fact that he barely says a word — if at all. Additionally, his pebble lenses and his atrociously scratchy record confuse his presence even further, and as the needle jumps and damages the disc, he seems immune to the discord.

When Graham had to suddenly disappear he left behind a wife, and Colonel Haki has taken upon himself the duty to inform her of the crisis but elects to mislead, indirectly suggesting that Graham is a womanizer, with the possible objective to seduce her in this weakened state.

"What's to become of me?" She asks.

"We'll think of something." Is Haki's coy reply

What is the plot of 'A Journey' aka 'Podróż'?

Three lifelong friends embark on an unforgettable journey, discovering harsh truths along the way. Kaye Abad portrays a character who, upon learning her cancer has returned, decides to forego treatment.

She invites her husband and best friend for a road trip across Tasmania, Australia, aiming to fulfill her bucket list wishes.

Paolo Contis, with a blend of Italian and Filipino heritage, stepped into the spotlight as part of 'Star Circle Batch 3' in 1993. Renowned as a child actor in the mid-90s, he was a familiar face on shows like 'Ang TV'.

In 2002, Paolo made a switch to GMA Network, embracing more mature roles as he transitioned from a child actor to a teen idol. At GMA, he showcased his versatility in various shows, frequently appearing in supporting, comedic, and villainous roles.

His acting prowess was recognized in 2008 when he secured the Best Actor award for his role in 'Banal', directed by GMA reporter Cesar Apolinario, who also won Best Director at the Metro Manila Film Festival that year. This accolade marked the start of his popularity surge, fueled by numerous awards.

Patrick Garcia

Patrick Garcia, born Franz Patrick Velasco Garcia on September 14, 1981, is a celebrated Filipino actor. Encouraged by his sister Cheska, a renowned actress, he ventured into acting at 13.

His debut in the 1994 hit movie 'Separada' instantly made him a heartthrob and a favorite among critics in the Philippines.

Following his successful debut, Garcia quickly secured roles in films and soap operas like 'Gimik', 'Araw-araw, gabi-gabi', and 'Asero'.

His outstanding performance as Ryan in 'Madrasta', a film by Olivia M. Lamasan, earned him the Best Child Actor award at the 1996 FAMAS Awards. The next year, his role in 'Batang PX' brought him multiple accolades.

Starting as a part of 'Ang TV', Garcia was later introduced as a member of 'Star Circle Batch 2' by ABS-CBN.

In 2006, Abad took on the role of Cynthia in 'Super Inggo,' a prequel fantasy, and continued with its sequel 'Super Inggo 1.5: Ang Bagong Bangis' in 2007.
