I didn't go. Tickets were too damn expensive. I wished that sometimes these venues you guys put out here are a bit affordable. They would have been an awesome group to enjoy because it would take me back to high school. But OFW!!!

N.J.’s Kool & the Gang on joining Rock & Roll Hall of Fame: ‘It’s about time’

Robert “Kool” Bell has three words for Kool & the Gang ’s upcoming induction into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame .

“It’s about time.”

The trailblazer from Jersey City, whose music melds jazz, funk, soul, R&B, disco and pop, has been at it for 60 years now.

Kool & the Gang took flight just a few years after Bell and his younger brother, Ronald “Khalis” Bell , founded a band called the Jazziacs with their friends in 1964.

They were teenagers then, but the sound they created would become the soundtrack of our lives.

Take their 1980 song “ Celebration ‚” the band’s highest-charting hit. For more than 40 years, it’s been a signal of happy milestones and parties, indispensable to moments of joy — like, say, making it into a certain hall of fame.

Bell, 73, spoke with NJ Advance Media just minutes after Kool & the Gang was announced as one of the 2024 inductees during Sunday’s episode of “ American Idol .”

“I’m feeling great,” the bass guitarist, singer and songwriter said from his home in Heathrow, Florida (outside Orlando), surrounded by friends who had gathered to watch “Idol” host Ryan Seacrest make the hall’s announcement .

Those with him included T-Mac, aka Thomas McClary , 74, a founding member of the Commodores who performed in the band with Lionel Richie , a 2022 inductee to the hall and judge on “Idol.”

“I’m feeling very good about it,” Bell said of the news. “I mean, it’s about time. It’s been over 60 years in this business and finally we get to the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame.”

The induction is bittersweet — six decades after the band first formed as a teen group, Bell is the only surviving original member.

Kool & the Gang joins the 2024 class of the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame alongside A Tribe Called Quest , Cher , Foreigner , Dave Matthews Band , Mary J. Blige , Peter Frampton and Ozzy Osbourne .

Fellow Jersey music legend Dionne Warwick , who lives in South Orange , will be inducted this year as a recipient of the music excellence award, which is also being given to Jimmy Buffett , MC5 and Norman Whitfield . In 2021, Warwick was first nominated for the hall as a performer.

Big Mama Thornton , Alexis Korner and John Mayall are receiving the hall’s musical influence award, while Suzanne de Passe will be honored with the Ahmet Ertegun Award.

In order to become eligible for the hall, an artist or group has to have released its first commercial recording at least 25 years before nomination.

Kool & the Gang has put out 26 studio albums, 17 of them in the ‘70s and ‘80s.

The band’s self-titled debut album was released in 1969, which means its first year of eligibility for the hall was 1994 — 30 years ago. But its first nomination arrived in February.

“We always talked about it,” Bell said. “We always felt and hoped that one day we’d get it.”

‘The sad part’

Today the core group that nicknamed itself the “Magnificent Seven” is down to one.

That, Bell said, would be “the sad part” of Kool & the Gang’s long-deserved honor.

His brother Ronald “Khalis” Bell , a saxophonist, singer, songwriter and composer, was 68 when he died in 2020.

Drummer and songwriter George “Funky” Brown died of cancer in 2023; he was 74. Saxophonist, flutist and percussionist Dennis “Dee Tee” Thomas was 70 when he died in 2021.

Trumpet player Robert “Spike” Mickens died in 2010, at 59; guitarist Claydes “Charles” Smith died in 2006, at 57; and keyboardist and singer Richard “Ricky West” Westfield died in 1985.

“I know they’re looking down and having a happy time also, so I’m thankful that we finally got in,” Bell said.

The honor arrives after many others for the band, including Grammys, American Music Awards, induction into the Songwriters’ Hall of Fame and the New Jersey Hall of Fame and a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame .

“All our fans who voted for us ... that was a great feeling,” Bell said.

The Rock & Roll Hall of Fame cites Kool & the Gang for creating rock ’n’ roll’s " most danceable anthems .”

The versatile band moved from a soulful jazz sound to funk, disco and ‘80s pop.

“ Jungle Boogie ” became its first big hit, reaching No. 4 on the Billboard Hot 100 in 1974. Months later, the Kool & the Gang song “ Hollywood Swinging ” was No. 6.

The group shared in the “Saturday Night Fever” soundtrack ’s win for album of the year in 1979. “ Ladies’ Night ,” released the same year, hit No. 8 in 1980, when “ Too Hot ” scored No. 5.

James “JT” Taylor , who grew up in Hackensack, joined Kool & the Gang as lead singer in 1979.

Taylor, now 70, was with the group for its peak run on the pop chart. He left the band in 1988 before making a brief return in 1996.

“ Celebration ,” with its jaunty, insistent guitar, jubilant horns and exclamations of “yahoo!” went No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 in 1981.

The party-time juggernaut was inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame in 2016 and added to the Library of Congress’ National Recording Registry in 2021.

Kool & the Gang’s pop dance and ballads made the ’80s a particularly successful time for the band.

“ Get Down on It ,” “ Fresh ,” “ Victory ,” “ Stone Love ” and “ Misled ” all soared into the top 10, and “ Joanna ” and “ Cherish ” peaked at No. 2 (in 1984 and 1985, respectively).

Still fresh, 60 years on

Bell is especially looking forward to the rock hall induction ceremony in Cleveland this October.

While he grew up in Jersey City — in 2016, the intersection of Maple Street and Pacific Avenue, where the Bells lived, was renamed Kool & The Gang Way — he was born in Youngstown, Ohio. The group was the first to be given a star on the Youngstown Walk of Fame.

“I’m a Buckeye,” Bell said. “So it means a whole lot. We hope to do more touring with some of these inductees ... we have worked with Foreigner before, but we’d like to do something with Foreigner and a couple of other inductees.”

Joining Bell in the current Kool & the Gang lineup are longtime trumpet player and singer Michael Ray ; guitarist and lead singer Shawn “Shawny Mac” McQuiller ; and saxophonist, keyboardist and music director Curtis “Fitz” Williams .

Reflecting on the band’s early days in the ’60s, when most members attended Jersey City’s Lincoln High School , Bell is grateful.

“We were very young and we were happy about what we were doing musically,” he said. “We grew over the years and moved to the ’70s and ’80s and to where we are today. It’s a blessing because it’s not an easy business, a lot of hills and valleys ... I remember one time they asked me ‘are you still working?’”

Yes, he’s still working.

Kool & the Gang’s most recent album, “ People Just Wanna Have Fun ,” was released in 2023.

The band is touring internationally through the fall.

Hip-hop gold

Kool & the Gang didn’t just pave the way for other artists.

The band’s jazz, soul and funk riffs resound in the music of fellow Rock & Roll Hall of Fame inductees and nominees.

A Tribe Called Quest famously sampled the band’s 1972 songs “ Soul Vibrations ” and “ Funky Granny ” in its “Scenario” remix (1992) featuring Busta Rhymes .

(Paterson producer Just Blaze also used “Soul Vibrations” in the 2003 song “ Pump it Up ” from Jersey City rapper Joe Budden .)

“ Don’t Sweat the Technique ,” the hit 1992 song from Eric B. & Rakim , who were nominated this year for the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame, samples Kool & the Gang’s 1969 song “ Give it Up .”

The many songs that have sampled Kool & the Gang play like a who’s who of hip-hop’s golden age, from the ’80s to the ’90s.

DJ Jazzy Jeff and the Fresh Prince — Will Smith — set their chilled-out 1991 success “ Summertime ” around the striking Kool & the Gang instrumental “ Summer Madness ” from 1974.

“ Hollywood Swinging ” can be heard in Too Short’s “Money in the Ghetto” (1993), DJ Kool’s “Let Me Clear My Throat” (1996) and Mase’s “Feel So Good ” (1997).

“ Jungle Boogie ” pops up in EMPD’s “ You Gots to Chill ” (1988), while Kool & the Gang’s “ Chocolate Buttermilk ” (1969) lays the foundation for Pete Rock & CL Smooth’s “Straighten it Out " (1992).

“ Ladies’ Night ” occupies a prominent position in a rap supergroup remix of Lil’ Kim’s “Not Tonight” (1997).

And that’s just a sampling of the samples.

This year’s induction of A Tribe Called Quest and Mary J. Blige , queen of hip-hop soul, sustains a tradition that started 21 years after the hall’s first class was inducted in 1986.

Grandmaster Flash and the Furious Five became the first hip-hop act to be inducted in 2007. ( Jay-Z , who introduced them, was inducted in 2021 .)

The name may be the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame, but Bell said he’s glad honorees represent (and defy) a wide range of genres:

“Hip-hop or R&B or jazz, it’s all about the music.”

The 2024 Rock & Roll Hall of Fame induction ceremony will be streaming live Saturday, Oct. 19 on Disney+ and will at a later date air on ABC as a special, which will stream on Hulu the next day.

Kool & The Gang Inducted into Rock & Roll Hall of Fame

CLEVELAND, Ohio – Kool & The Gang, the iconic R&B band founded and led by Youngstown native Robert “Kool” Bell, has been inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame.

The class of 2024 was announced Sunday night.

The inductees in the Performer category, in addition to Kool & The Gang, are Mary J. Blige, Cher, Dave Matthews Band, Foreigner, Peter Frampton, Ozzy Osbourne and A Tribe Called Quest.

The induction ceremony will take place Oct. 19 at Rocket Mortgage FieldHouse in Cleveland.

In a career that has now spanned almost 60 years, Kool & The Gang has been an innovator in funk, soul, disco, R&B and pop. The act’s hits include “Celebration,” “Ladies Night,” Too Hot,” Get Down on It” and “Fresh.”

The band released its 34th studio album, “People Just Wanna Have Fun,” last year. The album included the single “Let’s Party.”

The band became the first artists inducted into the Youngstown Walk of Fame on July 1, 2023, in a ceremony at Covelli Centre. Kool & The Gang played a concert at The Youngstown Foundation Amphitheatre that evening.

Although Kool & The Gang launched its career in New Jersey, the band’s founders spent much of their childhood in Youngstown.

Robert Bell, 73, and his late younger brother, Ronald, lived with their family on Youngstown’s east side in the 1950s. The family moved to Jersey City, N.J., in 1960, when Robert was 10 years old. Ronald died in 2021.

Robert started the band while still in high school in New Jersey in the mid-1960s, and the band released its first album in 1969.

The band has sold more than 70 million albums worldwide, earning two Grammy Awards, seven American Music Awards, 25 Top Ten R&B hits, nine Top Ten Pop hits and 31 gold and platinum albums.

Kool & the Gang is also one of the world’s most sampled bands, according to its press site.

Segments of Kool & the Gang’s music has been sampled on recordings by stars such as Madonna, Jay-Z, Beastie Boys, Janet Jackson, Cypress Hill and Sean Combs. Kool’s music has also been featured on various film soundtracks, including “Rocky,” “Saturday Night Fever,” “Pulp Fiction” and “Wreck-It Ralph.”

Kool & the Gang received a star on the famed Hollywood Walk of Fame in 2015.

The Rock Hall also unveiled its award winners Sunday night.

The Musical Excellence Award went to the late Jimmy Buffett, the MC5, Dionne Warwick and Norman Whitfield. The Musical Influence Award went to Alexis Korner, John Mayall and Big Mama Thornton, and the Ahmet Ertegun Award went to Suzanne De Passe.

CLEVELAND, Ohio -- Joy and degrees of surprise were among the prevalent emotions among the 2024 class of Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductees after the list was announced on Sunday night’s episode of ABC’s “American Idol.”

Suzanne de Passe, the longtime Motown executive who will be receiving the Ahmet Ertegun Award on Oct. 19 at Rocket Mortgage Fieldhouse, even said that she “I burst into tears when they told me.” de Passe -- who held several titles at Motown and helped build the careers of the Jackson 5, Lionel Richie and others -- said she was particularly honored because her mentor, Motown founder Berry Gordy Jr., received the same honor in 1987.

“Berry Gordy gave me the opportunity of a lifetime,” says de Passe whose credits include the Emmy Award-winning “Motown 25: Yesterday, Today, Forever” special in 1983. “I really learned a lot and was able to go out on a limb in some cases and either rise or fall, but never not be in a position of learning and growing. I’m very, very grateful for the career I’ve had and the opportunities that have come my way because of that launching pad.”

With another Motown veteran, the late Norman Whitfield, set to receive a Musical Excellence Award, Berry Gordy himself issued a statement saying: Today marks a moment of intense pride as two members of the Motown Family will be honored at the upcoming Rock & Roll Hall of Fame Foundation Awards, Suzanne de Passe and Norman Whitfield. I want to congratulate, Suzanne, my protégé and longtime friend, on being selected to receive the prestigious Ahmet Ertegun Award! Suzanne’s vision and passion contributed to Motown’s success. Every task I ever threw at her, she not only accomplished, but exceeded my expectations. Suzanne went from being my creative assistant, helping to launch the careers of Michael Jackson, the Jackson 5, Lionel Richie, the Commodores and more, to co-writing a screenplay for “Lady Sings the Blues,” for which she received an Oscar nomination. Suzanne has great instincts, a sharp wit, and a creative sense that has made her a formidable player in the entertainment world. I continue to be extremely proud of her.

“I am also so thrilled that Norman Whitfield, whom I consider a true musical genius and one of Motown’s most important creative forces, has been selected for the Rock & Rock Hall of Fame’s Musical Excellence Award. His brilliant body of work was versatile and bold. He had early collaborations like Marvin Gaye’s “Pride and Joy” and the Temptations “Just My Imagination.” He had numerous #1 hits, including two with the same song, “I Heard It Through The Grapevine,” back to back on two artists – Gladys Knight & the Pips and Marvin Gaye. Then, with his ear to the streets, he took the Temptations and Motown in a whole new direction. Norman’s music reflected the social consciousness of the times with songs like “Ball of Confusion, “War,” “Papa Was a Rolling Stone.” His incredible body of work makes him one of the most important creative forces of his time.

2024 rock hall inductees

Ozzy Osbourne, who famously attempted to have Black Sabbath removed from the 1999 Rock Hall nominations list (he considered it “meaningless” at the time), told Billboard that an induction for his solo career “feels big. I’m more than honored.” And, he added, it feels different than the band’s induction in 2006. “My solo career, it’s been a much larger part of my overall music career as a whole,” he explained. Osbourne, who’s effectively retired from touring due to many health issues, including Parkinson’s disease, would not commit to performing at the induction ceremony but promised that his attire for the evening “will most certainly be black.”

Foreigner

Foreigner founder Mick Jones told Billboard that his band’s induction means “obviously a lot,” especially coming after 22 years of eligibility. “Every year was the same thing, so eventually I didn’t really worry about it,” Jones said. “I certainly haven’t been overly consumed by it...It’s a great honor to be included amongst all these great artists that have been inducted over the years...I’ve had a great career and this like the whipped cream and cherry on top.” Jones was also “very grateful” grateful to his son-in-law, hit-making producer Mark Ronson, for a video campaign during the public voting process that included testimonials from Rock Hall members Slash, Dave Grohl, Slash, Chad Smith of the Red Hot Chili Peppers and Paul McCartney. “I had a good laugh seeing Paul’s Instagram post regarding Foreigner not being in the Hall of Fame,” Jones said, referencing McCartney’s off-the-cuff, “Foreigner? Not in the Hall of Fame? What the f***?!”) comment.

Jones, who announced his own battle with Parkinson’s disease in February. said he plans to attend the ceremony, but whether he’ll perform “hasn’t really been decided yet.” Original frontman Lou Gramm recently told the Plain Dealer that he’s anticipating performing, likely the group’s 1984 hit “I Want to Know What Love Is” and one other song.

Peter Frampton

Peter Frampton proclaimed himself “a little bit in shock, and speechless” to Billboard, adding that people always said, ‘You should be in;’ I said, ‘Eh...What is to be,’ y’know? So mixed emotions, because it’s something that I just never expected, whereas other people did for me. (laughs) It’s wonderful.” Frampton, who finished second in the Rock Hall’s Fan Vote with 528,000, said he’s starting to consider who he’d like to invite to perform with him at the ceremony but said his first call will be to Sheryl Crow, who had the guitarist perform with her during last year’s induction ceremony in Brooklyn.

Robert “Kool” Bell, the only living founding member of Kool & the Gang , feels “very good about” the band going into the Rock Hall after a 2018 induction into the Songwriters Hall of Fame and other honors. The Youngstown-born bassist promises that he’ll be on hand to “Celebrate” good times in October, and he feels that his band definitely has enough rock cred to put it in the Hall. “I did 48 shows with Van Halen, man, 10 shows with Kid Rock, opened for the Dave Matthews Band, Elton John, Rod Stewart. I also worked with Foreigner,” Bell, 73, says. “If you call it a Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, hey, you could say I feel like a rock ‘n’ roller.”

MC5

After six previous nominations, most recently in 2022, the MC5′s Musical Excellence Award is a “bittersweet” in the wake of co-founder Wayne Kramer’s passing on Feb. 2 at the age of 75. Three other bandmates -- Rob Tyner, Fred Smith and Michael Davis -- are also gone, leaving only drummer Dennis “Machine Gun” Thompson alive from the venerated and provocative Detroit band.

Kramer’s widow Margaret Saadi Kramer -- a Youngstown native and John Carroll University alumnus who manages MC5 affairs along with the Kramer-founded Jail Guitar Doors USA initiative -- called the honor, “Perhaps even the exact right thing at precisely the wrong time, yet, I’m certain he would have landed in gratitude for this recognition and received it like the beautiful free radical he was, an underdog victorious.”

Kramer did record one last MC5 album before his death -- the guest-filled “Heavy Lifting,” which is due out later this year along with a bonus live disc from 2018 in Detroit.

Rock & Roll Hall of Fame 2024 Class Includes A Tribe Called Quest, Mary J. Blige, and More

The list of inductees is also highlighted by Cher, Dave Matthews Band, Kool & The Gang, and Jimmy Buffett, among others.

The Rock & Roll Hall of Fame has announced the names of 16 artists who will be inducted in 2024.

The 2024 class includes A Tribe Called Quest , Mary J. Blige , Cher, Ozzy Osbourne, Jimmy Buffett, Foreigner, Dave Matthews Band, Peter Frampton, Kool & The Gang, Dionne Warwick, MC5, Big Mama Thornton, Norman Whitfield, Alexis Korner, John Mayall, and Suzanne de Passe.

“Rock & Roll is an ever-evolving amalgam of sounds that impacts culture and moves generations,” said John Sykes, Chairman of the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame Foundation. “This diverse group of inductees each broke down musical barriers and influenced countless artists that followed in their footsteps.”

To be eligible for the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame, an individual artist or group must have released its first commercial recording at least 25 years prior to the year of nomination. Four out of the eight inductees in the Performer category (Cher, Foreigner, Kool & the Gang, and Frampton) were on the ballot for the first time.

Others who were nominated this year but not selected for the 2024 class include Mariah Carey, Eric B. & Rakim, Jane’s Addiction, Lenny Kravitz, Oasis, Sinéad O’Connor, and Sade.

The 2024 Rock & Roll Hall of Fame Induction will stream live on Disney+ on October 19, with the ceremony airing on ABC at a later date.

Northeast music legend doesn’t want to perform this song at Rock Hall of Fame

It took decades for Foreigner to finally get inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame . And while the band’s original lead singer and Northeast native Lou Gramm is ecstatic about the honor, there is one thing that he is not too thrilled about the upcoming ceremony.

The upstate New York native opened about the monumental moment for his band and induction ceremony during a recent Rolling Stone interview. While bands often get a three-song set during induction into the Rock Hall, Gramm reportedly told Rolling Stone that Foreigner would have less time.

“I was first told we could play two. I was told we had 12 minutes to play. And I heard there’s going to be a segment of the introduction where people like Pete Frampton and a number of other people will say why they think we should have been in, and how glad they are that we are” the singer reportedly told the outlet. “That’ll leave us with about six minutes left, so I heard we’re going to play one song.”

With a plethora of hits like hard-hitting hits like “Feels Like the First Time,” “Cold as Ice” and “Hot Blooded,” the band went with a softer option: The power ballad “I Want to Know What Love Is.”

The 1984 single is Foreigner’s sole single to top the Billboard Hot 100 and has been certified platinum by the RIAA . Despite arguably being the band’s biggest song, Gramm would have preferred to play a different tune.

“I love the song, but it pigeon-holed us into something that we were not,” the 73-year-old reportedly told Rolling Stone. “I knew that influenced Mick [Jones] enough that you could find a soft, smushy ballad on every album after that.”

Gramm went on to say that the song is does not necessarily represent what the band is about and did not feel it was “suitable” for being their sole representation going into the Rock Hall.

So what would the music legend rather perform? Gramm said that if the band could cut out some parts of “I Want to Know What Love Is,” then they could incorporate bits of “Juke Box Hero” from their 1981 album “4″. Gramm has also said this song is his favorite Foreigner track overall .

“I think that the [video] of people saying nice things about us could be whittled down to two minutes, thus giving us eight minutes. Eight minutes would be substantial to do two songs. And then we can do ‘I Want to Know What Love Is’ and ‘Juke Box Hero.’ That makes perfect sense,” Gramm reportedly told Rolling Stone.

He added, “My next call after we’re done here is to Foreigner’s manager. I’m going to tell him how I think we can do two songs if we cut down the segment a little bit. It’ll still be a classic ballad and then we can end with our best rocker.”

Foreigner will be inducted into the Rock Hall of Fame this year alongside Mary J. Blige, Jimmy Buffett, Cher, Dave Matthews Band, Peter Frampton, Kool & The Gang, Alexis Korner, John Mayall, MC5, Ozzy Osbourne, Suzanne De Passe, Big Mama Thornton, A Tribe Called Quest, Dionne Warwick and Norman Whitfield.

The induction ceremony will be held Oct. 19 at the Rocket Mortgage Fieldhouse in Cleveland, Ohio. It will stream live on Disney+ with an airing on ABC at a later date and be available on Hulu the next day.

Rock and Roll Hall of Fame Announces 2024 Inductees: Cher, Jimmy Buffett, Mary J. Blige, Dave Matthews, Peter Frampton, Foreigner and More

Cher, Jimmy Buffett, Mary J. Blige

The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame has revealed the names of 16 artists or other musical figures who will be inducted in 2024. It’s a diverse list that stretches from R&B/rock pioneer Big Mama Thornton to pop superstars Cher and Dionne Warwick, and from ’70s-rooted rockers like Peter Frampton, Foreigner and Ozzy Osbourne to ’90s icons the Dave Matthews Band , Mary J. Blige and A Tribe Called Quest.

Popular on Variety

For the first time, the inductees were announced as part of an “American Idol” broadcast, during a Sunday night episode themed around the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.

Following is the complete list of inductees for 2024:

Performer Category:

  • Mary J. Blige
  • Dave Matthews Band
  • Peter Frampton
  • Kool & The Gang
  • Ozzy Osbourne
  • A Tribe Called Quest

Musical Influence Award:

  • Alexis Korner
  • John Mayall
  • Big Mama Thornton

Musical Excellence Award:

  • Jimmy Buffett
  • Dionne Warwick
  • Norman Whitfield

Ahmet Ertegun Award :

  • Suzanne de Passe

The eight “performer” inductees are the ones selected by a ballot sent out to the Hall’s voters after the 15 nominees were announced on Feb. 10.

That leaves seven nominees from this year who will have to wait for another crack at getting in: Mariah Carey, Jane’s Addiction, Sade, Sinead O’Connor, Oasis, Lenny Kravitz and the duo Eric B. and Rakim.

One question mark now is how Cher will react to her induction. Just last December, in an appearance on “The Kelly Clarkson Show,” she said, “You know what, I wouldn’t be in it now if they gave me a million dollars … I’m never going to change my mind. They can just go you-know-what themselves.” At that point, though, she had never received so much as a nomination, so the odds favor her changing her tune on that vow, now that she got voted in her first time actually appearing on the ballot.

Five out of the eight voted in this year were first-time nominees: Osbourne, Cher, Frampton, Foreigner and Kool & the Gang.

A Tribe Called Quest got in on the hip-hop collective’s third time on the ballot (and their third year in a row being nominated). Blige and Matthews both got in on their second try (she was previously up for it in 2021; DMB had a prior nod in 2020).

Frampton, for his part, beyond the merits of having had one of the biggest albums of all time, may be a sentimental favorite this year, due to his being in the acknowledged twilight of his musical career. He has been out on a farewell tour off and on since 2019, following his diagnosis with the debilitating disease inclusion body myositis in 2015. The rocker just wrapped up the last round of dates he had scheduled, although he has not said there won’t be more.

Osbourne becomes a second-time inductee this year; his group Black Sabbath was voted in all the way back in 2006. Sometimes there is contention over whether singers who are already in the Hall of Fame, as group members, really need to be pushed to the front of the line as solo artists, too, ahead of other contenders. In any case, voters decided that Osbourne’s post-Sabbath career established him as one of rock’s major icons, even apart from his initial round of influence and success as a frontman.

De Passe is getting her flowers for a career that included a long stint as one of the major players at Motown, developing the Jackson 5 into superstars and signing the Commodores, among other triumphs, before becoming a film and TV executive. She was profiled by Variety about her long and wide-ranging career in 2022.

Motown is also being celebrated with the induction of Whitfield, a songwriter and producer whose astonishing catalog of hits in the ’60s and ’70s included “I Heard It Through the Grapevine,” “Just My Imagination,” “Papa Was a Rollin’ Stone,” “War,” “Ball of Confusion,” “Ain’t Too Proud to Beg,” “(I Know) I’m Losing You,” “I Wish It Would Rain,” “I Can’t Get Next to You” and “Car Wash.” He died in 2008.

Coming on under the “musical influences” umbrella, Alexis Korner may be the name among this year’s inductees that is least known to contemporary music fans. He was a major player in the British blues scene of the 1960s and became a popular broadcaster as well; he died in 1984 at age 55. With John Mayall also being selected by the committee for the same honor, it’s an unexpected banner year for British blues-rockers.

But in 1984, "Celebration" was still a recent hit. It was a jam. And it was a really good one at that. But also in 1984, "Celebration" wasn't even the best Kool & The Gang jam, not even by a long shot. Because again in 1984, the band put out an LP called Emergency that had all of these jams on it:
