  • Trivia Homer says, "I would like to go back to Brazil but I hear the monkey problem has gotten even worse." This is a reference to complaints received from Brazilian tourist officials after the episode "Blame it on Lisa" (2002) was aired, citing that it made Brazil look crime-ridden and monkey-infested.
  • Goofs In this episode the Queen appears in court against Homer Simpson. In real life the reigning British Monarch is protected from prosecution and also cannot be called to give evidence in a case of criminal law.

Ian McKellen : Please, take these free tickets to my play!

Homer : What? What play?

Ian McKellen : We thespians believe it's bad luck to mention the name of this particular play out loud.

Homer : You mean 'MacBeth'?

[a car splashes Ian McKellen]

Ian McKellen : Quiet, you blundering fool! You'll curse us all!

Homer : What, by saying 'MacBeth'?

[an anvil falls on Ian McKellen's foot]

Ian McKellen : OW! Stop saying it!

Homer : Saying what?

Ian McKellen : 'MACBETH'! Oh, now I've said it.

[McKellen is hit by lightning]

Bart Simpson : This is cool! 'MacBeth', 'MacBeth', 'MacBeth'.

[McKellen is hit by lightning each time Bart says 'MacBeth']

Marge Simpson : Bart, stop saying 'MacBeth'!

Lisa Simpson : Mom, you said 'MacBeth'.

Homer : Mr. 'MacBeth', I'm really sorry.

Ian McKellen : That's quite alright. You didn't know.

The Simpson’s greatest European excursions

Richard Luck

the simpsons visit england

The Simpsons turns 30 this December. To mark the anniversary, RICHARD LUCK recounts the family’s greatest European excursions.

the simpsons visit england

It was on December 17, 1989, that the world was introduced to Homer, Marge, Bart, Lisa and Maggie Simpson – well, that’s if you don’t include the ‘shorts’ which appeared on The Tracey Ullman Show before then which, for the purpose of this article, we won’t.

Thirty years and 621 episodes later, barely a day passes without someone remarking that it isn’t the show it used to be, and indeed it isn’t.

However, even at its worst, The Simpsons is better than a lot of shows at their best. And besides, the solid gold that was Seasons 3 through to 10 means that any survey of the cream of TV is incomplete without a nod in the direction of Springfield.

Not that all of the Simpsons’ adventures have taken place in that town. In addition to trips to New York and New Orleans – among other US destinations – Homer and Co. have racked up the air miles. Locations they’ve jetted off to include Japan, where they wound up in the clutches of Godzilla, Australia, where they pissed off the entire country, and Brazil, where the Rio tourist board threatened Fox with legal action after the show portrayed the city as being overrun with rats, kidnappers and disease-infested monkeys.

By and large, the family’s European excursions have created far less of a fuss and a lot more fun. Before we begin our tour, I should point out that this gazetteer doesn’t included excursions featured in Treehouse of Horror episodes since they aren’t considered canon.

Nor has the first episode of Season 22 made the cut, what with Krusty the Clown’s visit to the Hague’s International Court of Human Rights being very much Elementary School Confidential’s B-story. Similarly, Raging Abe Simpson And His Grumbling Grandson In “The Curse Of The Fighting Hellfish” is absent since the scenes in Belgium only appear in flashback.

So, with the rules established in true Principal Skinner fashion, let the fun – and the learning! – begin!

The Crepes of Wrath, Season 1 Episode 11

Blackboard gag: ‘Garlic gum is not funny.’

Couch gag: The family jump on the couch at the same time, forcing Homer to the floor.

Plot: Bart is sent to France as part of a student exchange only to find himself enslaved by unscrupulous winemakers. Meanwhile, Homer and Marge open their home to Adil, an Albanian boy who proceeds to spy on the nuclear power plant for his government.

Notable observations: Bart – “So basically, I met one French person.”

Sights seen: On the way to the vineyard, Bart passes through landscapes modelled upon celebrated works by Monet (Bassin Aux Nymphéas) , Manet (Le Dejenuer sur l’herbe), Van Gogh (Wheatfield with crows) and Rousseau (The Dream).

Famous friends: The Gendarme is voiced by the award-winning French journalist and author Christian Coffinet.

the simpsons visit england

Trivia: While its title might be inspired by Steinbeck, the plot of the Crepes of Wrath together with the presence of characters named Cesar and Ugolin, comes directly from Claude Berri’s Jean de Florette and Manon des Sources. The entire Simpsons clan would also head to France for the 20th episode of Season 27, To Courier With Love.

Episode: The Regina Monologues, S15 E4

Blackboard gag:

Couch gag: The Simpsons are squeezed onto the couch via a Play-Doh Fun Factory.

Plot: After coming into some money, Bart treats the family to a trip to England, with Grampa tagging along in the hope of catching up with his war-time sweetheart Edwina.

Notable observations: Homer – “We’re big shot tourists from everyone’s favourite country, the USA. We saved your ass in Vietnam and shared our prostitutes with Hugh Grant, so give me some free maps and none of that dry British wit.”

Sights seen: St Paul’s, the Albert Hall, Harrods, Carnaby Street, the London Eye, Hyde Park Corner, the West End, the Old Bailey, the Tower of London and Buckingham Palace where Homer narrowly avoids running over the Queen.

Famous Friends: The gang are greeted at the airport by Tony Blair and bump into Sir Ian McKellen and JK Rowling over the course of their visit. Meanwhile Frasier’s Jane Leeves appears as Edwina while reality TV’s Evan Marriott (aka Joe Millionaire) plays himself.

Trivia: It took eight months to persuade Tony Blair to appear on The Simpsons, and when he did, some bloke called Alastair Campbell insisted that his lines be changed in order to promote British tourism.

Monty Can’t Buy Me Love, S10 E21

Blackboard GAG: ‘I have neither been there nor done that’

Couch gag: The family form part of a circus kick line.

Plot: Bent on becoming as popular as the Richard Branson-esque Arthur Fortune, Mr Burns asks Homer how he can win the hearts and minds of the great unwashed. When none of his employee’s suggestions work, the power plant owner sets himself the task of capturing the Loch Ness Monster. And since the show’s never been to Scotland before, Groundskeeper Willie’s along for the ride!

Notable observations: Willie – “Aye, that is my ma and pa. They own a tavern hereabouts. They still have the same pool table on which I was conceived, born and educated.”

Sights seen: Just the majestic loch, neighbouring Urquhart Castle and a local pub.

Famous Friends: Spinal Tap and Saturday Night Live’s Michael McKean stars as the Howard Stern-esque Jerry Rude.

Trivia: Much of the Nessie material is informed by the original King Kong. As for draining Loch Ness in order to get to the monster, readers will be thrilled to learn that local councillors have outlawed all such dredging operations.

The Italian Bob, S17 E8

Couch gag: A hand of cards is dealt featuring a straight royal flush consisting of Bart, Marge, Homer and Lisa, as the Jack, Queen, King and Ace of diamonds respectively; Maggie has to make do with being the Joker.

Plot: Mr Burns sends Homer and the family to Italy to pick up his new sports car. Needless to say, chaos ensues and the Simpsons find themselves in a remote Tuscan village, the mayor of which just happens to be Bart arch-enemy Sideshow Bob!

Notable observations: Homer – “Stupid Italy. Wish you’d never been unified by Victor Emmanuel II. If only you’d stayed a loose confederation of city-states, trading with each other and occasionally warring…”

Places visited: The Leaning Tower of Pisa, Pompeii, the Colosseum.

Famous Friends: Were it not for Frasier Crane, Sideshow Bob would be sufficient to secure Kelsey Grammer’s place in the TV pantheon. Here the eloquent assassin is accompanied by his wife Francesca Terwilliger, essayed by the Italian actress Maria Grazia Cucinotta (Il Postino, The World Is Not Enough).

Trivia: Coincidentally – or not as the case may be – Lisa visited Rome alone in the previous episode The Last Of The Red Hat Mamas. Kelsey Grammer, meanwhile, received the Emmy for Outstanding Voice-Over Performance; the least he deserved given his extraordinary rendition of Leoncavallo’s Pagliacci.

Northern Ireland/Republic Of Ireland

In the Name of the Grandfather, S20 E14

Blackboard gag: ‘Four leaf clovers are not mutant freaks.’

Couch gag: The family participate in a dog show which Bart wins, much to Homer’s chagrin.

Plot: In an attempt to make things up to Grampa after forgetting his family, the clan head to the Emerald Isle in search
of the pub where Homer’s old man
claims to have spent the best night of his life.

Notable observations: Derry Air Pilot: “Welcome to Ireland, also known as the Emerald Isle, Potatoville, East Boston, Freckled Bog, the Land of Poetry and the Land of Bad Poetry.”

Places visited: Blarney Castle,
the Giant’s Causeway, the Guinness brewery.

Famous Friends: Pub landlord Tom O’Flanagan’s voiced by Colm Meaney of The Commitments and Deep Space Nine fame. Meanwhile, Glen Hansard and Markéta Irglová reprise their roles from the Oscar-winning Once.

Trivia: The only episode to have been broadcast in Europe before the US, In the Name of the Grandfather was originally set to star Kenneth Branagh. The model and actress Kathy Ireland also turned down an opportunity to appear; Simpsons semi-regular Tress MacNeille took over the voicing duties while the following caption accompanies Ireland’s cameo: “Not actually Kathy Ireland. We asked her to do the show but she said no. We wish her well.”

The Greatest Story Ever D’ohed, S21 E16

Couch gag: A repeat of the previously mentioned dog show skit.

Plot: Determined to save Homer’s
soul, Ned Flanders whisks the Simpsons away on a trip to the Holy Land. Naturally, once there, Homer becomes convinced that he is the new Messiah while his pious neighborino loses his faith.

Notable observations: Homer (preaching at the Dome of the Rock) – “I will unite the Christians, the Muslims and the Jews. From now on, you shall
be known as Chrismujews! Because in the end, aren’t all religions the same? They tell us what to eat, when to pray, that this lump of clay called man can somehow shape himself to resemble the divine.”

Places visited: The Dome of the Rock, the Church of the Holy Sepulchre, the Wailing Wall and the Dead Sea.

Famous Friends: Besides Sacha Baron Cohen as the Simpsons’ tour guide Jakob, the singer-songwriter Yael Naim appears as Doreet, Jakob’s niece.

Trivia: Given the potential for controversy, it must have come as a great relief to writer Kevin Curran when his work on The Greatest Story Ever D’ohed was nominated for a Humanitas Prize, an award for film and TV writing intended to promote tolerance, dignity and understanding.

The Saga of Carl, S24 E21

Couch gag: The family appear as sea creatures who are promptly devoured by Blinky, the three-eyed fish who’s been something of a series mascot since Season 1.

Plot: When Carl disappears with the syndicate lottery winnings, Homer, Moe and Lenny depart for Reykjavík, Lisa having discovered that Carl’s family hails from Iceland.

Notable observations: Homer (torturing Carl): “Tell us where the money is or we’ll feed you shark meat fermented in its own urine.”

Places visited: The Perlan, the Hallgrimskirkja and the Blue Lagoon.

Famous Friends: The Saga of Carl features original music from Icelandic recording sensation Sigur Ros, complete with a fresh take on Danny Elfman’s Simpsons theme music.

Trivia: Carl’s Icelandic heritage had previously been hinted at in the Season 14 episode ‘Scuse Me While I Miss the Sky. Would that such close attention had
been paid to his family’s surname – they’re frequently referred to as the Carlsons but everybody knows that Iceland favours patronyms and matronyms rather than family names. Did Matt Groening and friends really think we wouldn’t notice?!

Throw Grampa from the Dane, S29 E20

Couch gag: The family emerge from computer printers. When the page featuring Homer gets stuck, he remarks, “Mmmmmmm, jam.”

Plot: With Grampa in need of medical attention, the Simpsons head off to Denmark to take advantage of the healthcare system.

Notable observations: Homer – “Tubby or not tubby? That is the question. Whether ’tis nobler in the
mind to withstand the wings and nachos of outrageous portions, or just have fish and end it. Aye, there’s the rub! Brisket rubs, Memphis rubs, all the rubs I’ll miss when I shovel off from Buffalo, mozzarella…”

Places visited: Amalienborg, the Land of Legends, the Louisiana Museum of Modern Art, Kronborg Castle, the statue of the Little Mermaid.

Famous Friends: Danish comedian and actress Sidse Babett Knudsen plays the woman who dances with Homer, leaving Marge distraught.

Trivia: Plenty of critics have pointed out that Throw Grampa from the Dane has a very similar plot to the Season 28 episode Havana Wild Weekend, in which Old Man Simpson’s ill-health prompts a visit to Cuba. As such, it’s often sighted when people talk of The Simpsons having run out of ideas. Oh yes, and ‘fart’ really does mean ‘speed’ in Danish.

Screen Rant

Every country visited by the simpsons.

Over the course of more than 30 seasons on the air, the Simpsons have visited everywhere from China to Italy to Mexico to Antarctica.

Over the course of more than three decades on the air, the eponymous family in The Simpsons has traveled all over the world. They went to China so Selma could adopt a baby, they went to Italy to pick up Mr. Burns’ new sports car, they went to Brazil to search for Lisa’s missing pen pal, and they went to Canada to smuggle back cheap prescription drugs.

Binge-watching every season of The Simpsons would provide a surprisingly useful education in world geography. From Mexico to the UK to Antarctica, the Simpson family has been to a bunch of different countries.

The Simpsons have been to China a few times. When Bart worked as a courier in “Bart on the Road,” he was sent to Hong Kong. In “Homer the Father,” Homer was sent to China to manage the construction of a nuclear power plant in China. In “Goo Goo Gai Pan,” the whole family went to China with Selma so she could pretend to be married to Homer to adopt a child.

France is another country that Homer and Bart went to individually in addition to the whole family going together. In “The Crepes of Wrath,” Principal Skinner transferred Bart to the French countryside in a foreign exchange scheme. In “The Devil Wears Nada,” Homer went to the Annual Nuclear Power Expo in Paris to act as Carl’s assistant.

In “Bart-Mangled Banner,” after the Simpsons escape from Alcatraz Prison, they’re picked up by a French freighter and move to France. However, before too long, they miss America, because that’s where all their stuff is.

In the episode “The Greatest Story Ever D’ohed,” Homer took the family on a church retreat to Jerusalem on Ned Flanders’ invitation. As it turned out, Ned extended the invitation in the hope of saving Homer’s soul.

The United Kingdom

When Bart found a $1,000 bill in the episode “The Regina Monologues,” Lisa convinced him to take the family on vacation to London. There, they met then-Prime Minister Tony Blair and accidentally got into a car accident with the Queen herself.

That wasn’t the Simpsons’ only jaunt to the United Kingdom. In “Monty Can’t Buy Me Love,” Homer accompanied Mr. Burns to the Scottish Highlands in a bid to capture the Loch Ness Monster.

After finding a golden giraffe cracker in a 30-year-old box of animal crackers in “Simpson Safari,” Homer won a family vacation to Tanzania . There, they met a chimp-friendly scientist named Dr. Joan Bushwell, a parody of Jane Goodall.

After trashing his 1936 Stutz Bearcat at the beginning of “The Italian Bob,” Mr. Burns sent Homer and his family to Italy to pick up his new sports car: a Lamborgotti Fasterossa. There, they found Sideshow Bob hiding out with his new wife and son.

When Bart found Denis Leary’s cell phone in “Lost Verizon,” Marge used the phone’s GPS tracker to keep tabs on him. To teach the family a lesson, Bart attached the GPS to a bird, which sent Homer, Marge, Lisa, and Maggie all around the world. They ended up at Machu Picchu, which was Marge’s dream vacation.

When Homer lost all the family’s savings in “Thirty Minutes Over Tokyo,” they had to allow fate to choose their next vacation destination. They wound up flying to Japan with the cheap tickets of a last-minute booking.

The Simpsons took Grampa to Ireland in the episode “In the Name of the Grandfather.” Years earlier, Grampa spent the best night of his life at O’Flanagan’s Pub. Upon his return to the Emerald Isle, Grampa enjoyed a night of drinking at O’Flanagan’s with Homer.

In “Blame It on Lisa,” Lisa unwittingly drained Homer’s bank account by sponsoring a South American orphan named Ronaldo. When Ronaldo was reported missing, the Simpsons went to Rio de Janeiro to search for him and found that he’d become a celebrity in Brazil.

The Simpson family returned to Brazil in the episode “You Don’t Have to Live Like a Referee,” after Homer became a soccer referee and was recruited as a ref for the 2014 World Cup.

The Simpsons have visited Canada a few times. They went to Toronto to interrupt a movie shoot in “The Bart Wants What It Wants.” Homer went back and forth across the border to smuggle cheap prescription drugs from Winnipeg when Mr. Burns scrapped the plant’s health plan.

Homer and Marge got into curling and made it to the 2010 Vancouver Olympics in “Boy Meets Curl.” Lisa took part in the Spellympics in Calgary, Alberta, in “I’m Spelling as Fast as I Can.”

Homer has been to India twice. He accompanied Apu to the Kwik-E-Mart headquarters to beg for his job back in “Homer and Apu.” He was later sent to manage Mr. Burns’ new Indian power plant in “Kiss Kiss Bang Bangalore.”

Homer went to Cuba with Mr. Burns and Smithers to attempt to buy the island from Fidel Castro in “The Trouble with Trillions.” Homer later returned to Cuba with the whole family, including Grampa, to get inexpensive medicare in “Havana Wild Weekend.”

The Netherlands

Bart and Homer went to the Netherlands with Krusty the Clown in “Elementary School Musical,” supposedly so Krusty could receive a Nobel Prize. But they were instead sent to The Hague so Krusty could be tried for international criminal activity.

Bart ended up in trouble of international proportions while trying to prove Lisa wrong in “Bart vs. Australia.” After making a prank call in an attempt to refute her claim that toilet water spins the other way down under, Bart sparked an international incident.

The State Department sent Bart to personally apologize to the people of Australia, but the Simpsons decided to turn the trip into a vacation. They ended up having to flee when Bart’s apology backfired – and accidentally brought a native species home with them.

To make up for the failure of the titular summer camp in “Kamp Krusty,” Krusty took the kids to Tijuana. When Sideshow Bob kidnapped Bart and took him to Five Corners in “The Bob Next Door,” he left a false trail that led the Simpson family to Mexico.

Bart had so much fun on the family’s cruise vacation in “A Totally Fun Thing That Bart Will Never Do Again” that he faked a virus outbreak to keep the ship at sea. When the prank was rumbled, the family was kicked off the ship at the nearest land – Antarctica – where they made their own fun with the local penguin population.

20 Places Around The World The Simpsons Have Visited (And We Can Too!)

Just don't let Homer hold onto the passports

Ah, The Simpsons . It’s tough to know where to begin with this long-running, much-beloved show. I remember, decades ago, flipping through the TV channels and coming across this odd, super yellow cartoon family. I had no idea what to make of it at first, but I soon settled in and watched the whole episode.

It was the season one episode ‘The Call of the Simpsons,’ where Homer is mistaken for Bigfoot, because you totally needed to know that. Anywho, the important thing was that, at that moment, I became a huge fan.

Like a lot of committed fans, though, I haven’t had the easiest relationship with the show. After almost 650 episodes, it’s totally understandable that fatigue would start to set in, things would get a little hackneyed, plotlines a little… well, bizarre at times. There are many who would tell you that the golden age of The Simpsons has long since passed, and there’s more than a kernel of truth in that.

Still, heck, I’m not here to be a Daniel Downer all over your faces. Even if the show were to end right now, today, it would leave behind a glorious legacy, a well-earned place among the most popular and influential TV shows ever.

Over its long course, the Simpson family has been taken on a veritable world tour of sights, cities and other destinations. The wacky, Simpson-fied takes on certain places might be beyond our reach, but we can certainly follow along to some of these places. Let’s take a look.

20 Paris? What Could Go Wrong?

In the fifth episode of season 21, “The Devil Wears Nada,” Homer takes a trip to a city that many visitors and natives agree to be the most romantic on Earth: Paris, France. Sadly for him, he’s traveling not with Marge but with his Power Plant colleague and close friend Carl Carlson.

As is The Simpsons ’ wont, their trip becomes a bit of a farce, culminating in Carl’s flirting with Carla Bruni (the wife of Nicolas Sarkozy, whom he doesn’t recognise). The first couple’s appearance on the show was an internet sensation in 2009, ABC News reports.

When you go yourself, it might be better to stick to selfies in front of the Eiffel Tower and samples of top-notch cheese and wine.

19 Isn’t Burns Rich Enough Already? - Belgium and Luxembourg

As fans of the show will know dang well, Abe Simpson is the oldest, crotchety-est, tall-story-spinning-est member of the family. He often exasperates his family and other Springfield residents with his meandering stories, but there was one time that tales of his past became all too real.

In season seven episode “Raging Abe Simpson And His Grumbling Grandson In ‘The Curse of the Flying Hellfish,’” Grandpa tells Bart about the history of his old platoon, the Flying Hellfish. His flashbacks centre around the Ardennes, a beautiful forested and mountainous region that is primarily found in Belgium and Luxembourg. It’s a little different today to the Ardennes that Abe remembers, that’s for darn sure.

18 When The Simpsons Crossed The Pond - London

For some, the early 2000s mark a time when the show began to fall into a bit of a decline. Everyone’s going to have different opinions on that one, of course, but the team was still firing on all cylinders at times. One of my very favourite episodes was released in 2003: season fifteen’s “The Regina Monologues.”

When Bart comes into some money, the family decides to spend it on a vacation to London, England. Naturally, Homer falls foul of the Queen (he crashes into her carriage in a Mini Cooper and is imprisoned in the Tower of London) in this hilarious, star-studded episode.

Tony Blair, JK Rowling and Sir Ian McKellen all appear as themselves (David and Victoria Beckham were considered but eventually deemed to not be famous enough, CBBC Newsround reports). Your own trip may not be quite this eventful, but London still has so much to see and do.

17 The Loch Ness Monster? Why Not? - Scotland

While we’re in the United Kingdom, let’s take a quick hop up north (it’s not a quick hop at all, as you’ll know if you’ve tried it) to Scotland. More specifically, to Loch Ness, supposed home of the most famous cryptozoological creature of all time.

In season ten’s “Monty Can’t Buy Me Love,” Mr. Burns becomes jealous of a popular millionaire named Arthur Fortune. In order to become beloved himself, he devises a scheme to wow the whole world: capturing and exhibiting the Loch Ness Monster.

Off he went to Scotland, then, along with Homer, Groundskeeper Willie and Professor Frink. When you go yourself, I don’t recommend trying to drain the Loch to capture the monster, as Burns did. Just appreciate the astonishing natural beauty that surrounds you.

16 Dang That Cowardly Carl! - Iceland

In TV shows, as in real life, sudden windfalls are a great catalyst to taking trips. We can’t all afford to jet off around the world whenever we fancy, after all. Who am I, Kanye West? As such, lottery wins and the like are the perfect time to head off on one of your bucket list trips.

As we saw in “The Regina Monologues,” the Simpsons is quite fond of this plot device. Season twenty-four’s “The Saga of Carl” offers an interesting spin on it, seeing the Simpsons traveling to Iceland in pursuit of Carl Carlson.

The Iceland native took off with the combined winnings from a pooled lottery win, in search of an expensive piece of family history that would clear his cowardly ancestors’ names (or so he hoped).

That didn’t quite go as planned, but this beautiful, picturesque country in the North Atlantic is travel goals for sure.

15 Gah! What’s Bob Doing Here? - Italy

In season seventeen, the Simpsons pay their first visit to Italy. It may have taken them 364 episodes to do so, but they certainly make up for all of that on their arrival.

In “The Italian Bob,” Mr. Burns sends Homer to the country to pick up a Lamborgotti Fasterossa (snark language for Lambourghini Gallado) for him, after the children of Springfield make fun of his old-fashioned car. While in Italy, they visit all of the biggest tourist hotspots; Rome, Venice, Pisa and Pompeii among them.

It sounds like quite a trip. Why not imitate them? I can’t promise you’ll happen across a small village where Sideshow Bob is suddenly mayor, but you never know.

14 Because YOLO, That’s Why - Barcelona

Now, as far as I’m concerned, the whole YOLO thing is totally played out now. I suppose, as a way of embracing life and pushing limits, it’s just the right attitude, but as a buzzword? Heckles no. We’ve all heard far too much of that nonsense.

One cartoon character who certainly embraces that spirit to the full is Homer Simpson. The season 25 episode “YOLO” sees him visited by his old childhood pen pal from Spain, Eduardo, who comes to Springfield to help Homer realise those childhood dreams they wrote about all those years ago.

After getting to ride n the back of a fire truck (and other childhood dreams), Homer is due to take Eduardo back to the airport. Feeling inspired, he instead takes an impromptu trip to Barcelona. Now that is a great idea for us all.

13 Ain’t No Party Like An Irish Party - Ireland

For the next stop on our The Simpsons world tour, we’re heading back over to the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland. In 2009, the season twenty episode “In the Name of the Grandfather” was first broadcast, adding another country to the family’s checklist of places visited: Ireland.

After Grandpa reminisces about O’Flanagan’s, a pub where he once spent a memorable night, the Simpsons decide to visit. While Homer and his father (predictably) spend most of their time at the bar, the rest of the family embark on a tour of some of the greatest sights Ireland has to offer. Among them are Blarney Castle and the Giant’s Causeway.

12 Because You’ve Just Got To - Egypt

Now, of course, everybody’s travel bucket list is going to be different. In terms of priorities, particular places and such, it’s never going to be quite the same. At the same time, though, there’s going to be a fair amount of overlap. Some places are just universal must-visits. The Colosseum in Rome, the Eiffel Tour of Paris, the Pyramids of Egypt… these are the real big-ticket items.

Now, canonically, we’ve never seen the Simpsons visit Egypt (yet). They have done so, though, because Patty and Selma have a photograph of themselves taken at the pyramids (it’s seen in season two’s “Principal Charming”). As TV Tropes also reports, the 1991 video game Bart vs the World also features an area set in Egypt, complete with an “obligatory Great Pyramid level.” Not to mention those stories.

11 TIL: That’s Not How The Coriolis Effect Works - Australia

Over the years, Bart Simpson's scandalous ways have gotten him into all kinds of trouble with all kinds of authorities. Not just his arch nemesis Principal Skinner, but the inept police chief Clancy Wiggum and even beyond. His crowning achievement was probably the time that a prank saw him offend the entire distant nation of Australia.

“Bart vs Australia,” of season six, sees a collect call prank escalate until the family are brought to the U.S Embassy in Canberra to deal with Bart’s fraud. You don’t need to cause international drama to visit Australia’s beautiful capital city for yourself, though.

10 Good Old Animal Crackers - Tanzania

So, that was one far-flung trip to Australia right there. It’s a little extreme to cause an international crisis just for a trip to an exotic region, though. How about a journey that the family took under happier circumstances, when they were the lucky winners of a trip of a lifetime?

Season twelve saw Homer rifling through the house for food in “Simpsons Safari.” Happening on an old box of animal crackers, he finds a sold gold giraffe inside, and (through a technicality) they’ve won a trip to Tanzania!

While in the east of Africa, they enjoy a safari in the Massai Mara and a trip to Olduvai Gorge, which sounds like a fantastic trip to take in real life.

9 So Homer IS Talented After All - Vancouver, Canada

Of all the innate talents that you’d expect of Homer Simpson (sleeping and snacking doesn’t qualify, sadly), curling probably isn’t one of them. Nevertheless, in season 21’s “Boy Meets Curl,” he and Marge find themselves trying the sport out after their date night plans fall through, and they discover that they’ve got a lot of natural ability.

So much so, in fact, that a trip to Vancouver, Canada was in order to take part in the 2010 Vancouver Games. Now, sure, nobody without a TARDIS can take that trip anymore, but who needs an excuse to come and see this wonderful city (consistently ranked among the most liveable cities in the world, The Economist Intelligence Unit reports)?

8 Cuba, Land Of Opportunity (For Grandpa)

While we’re visiting some of the United States’ closest neighbours on our tour, how about a trip down to Latin America?

The Simpsons have travelled to Cuba twice in the show’s run. One of these trips was back in season 9, when Burns was having a kerfuffle with ‘his’ trillion-dollar bill in “The Trouble With Trillions.” Much later, in season 28, the family returned in search of alternative medical care for grandpa in “Havana Wild Weekend.”

As is generally the case with the show, The Simpsons presented a rather more colourful take on the country, but that’s just how family trips are when Homer’s involved.

7 The Simpsons Movie That Never Was - Tijuana, Mexico

As any ardent fan of The Simpsons will tell you, “Kamp Krusty” was one episode that the producers originally thought could be made into a feature-length movie. Due to various constraints, this didn’t pan out, and the children’s awful experience at Kamp Krusty instead became the plot for the first episode of season four.

As bad as the camp was, though, there was an upside to the whole thing. When Krusty the Clown eventually did arrive, he promised to make it up to the poor children by taking them to his idea of ‘the happiest place on Earth.’ Where’s that? Tijuana, Mexico, that’s where.

6 Ned Flanders, Part Animal - Las Vegas

Now, I know that Las Vegas is essentially the party capital of the entire planet. With its gaudy lighting, incomparable shows and moral ambiguity, there’s nary a visitor to the Nevada city that doesn’t come away forever changed in some way. Or so the stories would have you believe.

If you’d expect anybody to be able to resist that siren call, though, it’d be the goodly Ned Flanders. Sadly, as season 10’s “Viva Ned Flanders” reveals, the sixty-year-old is just as susceptible as anybody else, coming home with a new wife (as does Homer).

Myself? I’d just be in it for the world-renowned fine dining and hotels.

5 Now THAT’S A Mid-Life Crisis - New Jersey

When the ever-impulsive Homer hears that he’s passed half of the average male’s life expectancy, it throws him for a loop. Desperate to become more productive, he models his life around great inventor Thomas Edison.

Attempting to invent things of his own, his only success is his untippable chair with extra legs, which he learns Edison had also created previously (though without patenting it). To keep this a secret, Homer sets off for the Thomas Edison memorial museum in New Jersey, intending to smash the original before having a change of heart.

The real Menlo Park Museum/Edison Memorial Tower is situated in Edison, Middlesex County, the site of Edison’s ‘Invention Factory.’

4 When The Simpsons Go Full Tourist - Machu Picchu

So, yes. Over the course of this rundown, we’ve seen the family journey to all sorts of places. Some in their native United States, some far beyond. Some for vacations, some because… well, because Bart was doing his usual Bart thing and causing an international crisis.

Their trip to Machu Picchu, however, is probably one of their most contrived of all. The whole thing came about in season 20’s “Lost Verizon,” where Bart steals a cellphone and Marge has the GPS activated so that he can’t disappear from her and get into trouble.

In response, Bart attaches the GPS chip to a bird’s leg, which leads them on a chase all the way to Machu Picchu. Needless to say, the revered Incan site is one of the most popular tourist destinations on the planet, so I don’t really need to recommend that one to you.

3 A Brazilian Odyssey

If Homer’s impulsive ways and Bart’s malevolent pranks send the family off on their travels at times, so do Lisa’s goodly ways. In season 13’s “Blame It On Lisa,” the family wonder why their phone bill is so high, and discover that Lisa has been making international calls to an orphan she’s been sponsoring.

He’s a little Brazilian boy by the name of Ronaldo, and the family heads off to Brazil to look for him when they discover he’s in danger. Naturally, the loose cannon that is Homer finds himself in a bind almost as soon as the family lands, but the rest of us can enjoy a trip without all of this drama unfolding.

2 Aren’t You A Little Young To Be A Courier? - Hong Kong

So far in this rundown, we haven’t really seen the Simpson family venture over to Asia. They certainly have done, though, although again, they really shouldn’t have. Dang it, Bart, what are you up to now?

In season seven episode “Bart on the Road,” the lawless young Simpson makes himself a fake driver’s license at the DMV while nobody’s looking. When his ride with Milhouse, Nelson and Martin inevitably goes awry, the boys become stranded in Tennessee. Bart’s only way to get home (without his parents finding out what he’s done) lies in getting a job as a courier.

His first assignment? Taking a package to Hong Kong, the mighty region of China which famously has the most skyscrapers in the world, according to Skyscraper Center.

1 Are We In India Yet?

Speaking of trips to Asia, our final entry in this list is one that a lot of fans will have fond memories of. In the memorable season 5 episode “Homer and Apu,” Homer inadvertently gets his friend fired for serving him spoiled meat (which he enjoyed at the time, naturally).

To make up for his involvement in the sting, Homer joins Apu on a trip to India, where the head of the Kwik-E-Mart corporation is found. As always, Homer manages to blow their chances, but everything works out and the status quo returns before the credits roll. If nothing else, the family have another country to tick off of their collective to-visit list.

The Simpsons visit Scotland: What we know about upcoming episode

Here's what we know about The Simpsons' trip to Scotland.

  • TV & Streaming

Famous cartoon family The Simpsons have ventured across the pond for an adventure in Scotland.

In a newly released episode of the long-running show, viewers will see Homer and his family fly to Edinburgh over fears that Scottish character Groundskeeper Willie has been kidnapped.

The episode is titled AE Bonnie Romance and features some of Scotland’s most famous voices including Inverness actor Karen Gillan, who voices Maisie.

After making their way to the land of the brave, the Simpsons quickly realise they’ve been tricked into attending Groundskeeper Willie’s wedding to Maisie.

In true fashion, the trip is not without it’s challenges with Homer and Marge enduring a series of arguments throughout their Edinburgh trip.

However, the long-time loves manage to rekindle their romance at ‘The St Andrews Golf Club’.

Doctor Who star David Tennant also makes an appearance in the episode, voicing a villain who is set to betray Willie and lock away Bart.

Lisa Simpson seems to make the most of her trip to Scotland as she is seen enjoying everything the Edinburgh Fringe Festival has to offer.

Scots band Belle & Sebastian also make an appearance, providing the soundtrack for The Simpsons’ trip to Scotland.

The band, who appear as The Belle and Sebastian Experience in the episode, are set to perform at Willie’s wedding.

They perform an original song entitled Willie and the Dream of Peat Bogs, which is similar to their 1996 hit Judy and the Dream of Horses.

The episode is the eighth instalment of season 35 of The Simpsons and will be available for UK viewers next year.

'The Simpsons' To Tackle Trip To Boston, Lampoon Patriots In New Episode

October 5, 2016 / 10:00 AM EDT / CBS Boston

By Matt Dolloff , CBS Boston

BOSTON (CBS) -- The iconic Simpson family doesn't venture outside their hometown of Springfield terribly often, let alone travel to real-life American cities. But Sunday, Oct. 9 brings a new episode of The Simpsons that will hit extremely close to home.

Titled "The Town," the newest Simpsons episode will follow the family as they go on a trip to Boston, a trip which Homer Simpson apparently calls a "hate-cation." Here's how the episode description reads, via FOX:

After Homer catches Bart rooting for Springfield's football rival, the Boston Americans, he plans a family "hate-cation" trip to Boston in an attempt to show Bart that Boston is a terrible city in the all-new "The Town" episode.

As if there were any doubt, yes, the "Boston Americans" are a direct parody of the Patriots, complete with caricatures of Bill Belichick, Tom Brady, and Rob Gronkowski.

Bill Belichick - simpsons_2717_thetown_sc_1026_hires2-e1475602840968

The episode description implies that Homer will discover that Boston is indeed not as terrible a city as he imagined. Executive producer Al Jean told Entertainment Weekly that New England's time-honored tradition of candlepin bowling will win him over, which is not surprising given the producers' long-time fascination with old-timey American customs.

But surely, this will garner plenty of reasonable, measured, rational reactions from Boston's more protective citizens. Joking aside, hopefully most of us can handle a few harmless jokes at our expense.

Boston's own Bill Burr is listed as a guest star on the episode as "Townie," as well as Lexington, Mass. native Rachel Dratch as "Doctor." The episode airs Sunday night at 8 p.m. ET, after the Patriots play the Cleveland Browns at 1 p.m. and the Red Sox face the Cleveland Indians at 4 p.m..
