You could buy the cheaper ticket, save 200$, and not show up for the first leg of the flight (California – Dallas), right? Well, it’s not that easy.

In the scenario above, I explained a term called “hidden city ticketing”, which people use to save money on flights. But airlines don’t like that passengers are getting cheaper tickets, which is why skipping a specific leg of the flight may result in the cancellation of the whole ticket and other penalties .

In this article, we’ll explain everything you need to know about skipping parts of your flight – when it’s okay, when not, what are the penalties, and when hidden city ticketing is worth it.

What Happens When You Skip the First Leg of Your Flight?

Skipping the first leg of a connecting flight is usually a bad idea. Whenever a passenger doesn’t show up for the first leg of a connecting flight, the airline cancels all the other upcoming flights on the same ticket for that passenger . This also applies to any other leg of the flight that isn’t the last one. Remember that airlines only cancel the rest of the flight because they’re combatting hidden city ticketing individuals. If you have a valid reason, and they don’t suspect that you intentionally bought cheaper tickets, they will most likely let you skip the flight.

For example, a passenger on TripAdvisor mentioned that he was able to skip the first leg because the first flight was expected to be 5 hours late, which would cause problems for him, and he could drive to the connecting terminal in 3 hours. He contacted the airline, they let him skip the first flight, and drive there instead. Note that he had slight issues in the connecting airport, so it might be worth it to ask them to send some kind of an email with approval that you could show at the airport.

What Happens When You Skip the Second (Last) Leg of Your Flight?

Skipping the last leg of the flight usually doesn’t result in any penalties (99 out of 100 times) . That’s why people who do hidden city ticketing only do it when they need to skip the last leg of the flight. Another thing worth mentioning is that skipping the last leg of the flight isn’t illegal , but it’s against the airline’s Conditions of Carriage. 

Theoretically, you don’t even need to notify the airline. However, it may be a good idea to do that anyway. That’s because whenever someone doesn’t show up for a flight, especially if it’s a connecting flight, the flight is usually delayed, which is inconvenient for other passengers. So if you’re trying to follow a polite hidden city ticketing etiquette, notify the airline that you won’t be showing up for the last leg of the flight right after you’ve landed in the connecting airport.

As I already mentioned earlier, Hidden City Ticketing is completely legal. But by skipping a leg of a connecting flight, you’re breaching the airline’s Conditions of Carriage, which gives them the right to cancel all of your frequent flyer points and any other bonuses . It’s the only REAL penalty that airlines sometimes (but still very rarely) enforce. So if you’ve got a bunch of points saved up and you don’t want to lose them, then hidden city ticketing probably isn’t for you.

In other, very, very rare instances, airlines have tried suing passengers who do hidden city ticketing and even companies that help people find hidden ticketing opportunities, such as skiplagged.com . In all of these instances, the court has dismissed the case . However, the person/company who’s being sued still has to pay legal fees for the trial, which is the only reason why airlines do this – it’s to scare other passengers into giving up (Ughh, I hope they don’t sue me for writing this). In most instances, they only go for people who do hidden city ticketing on a regular basis, costing the airlines upwards of 10 000$ – 100 000$ in lost fees.

So far I haven’t heard of anyone getting banned from future flights because of hidden city ticketing. That said, a few passengers have been banned from airline priority programs, such as the American Airlines Advantage program. So realistically, the only penalty that you could face is the loss of a few bonuses .

Can You Cancel the First or Last Leg of Your Connecting Flight?

In most cases, you’ll be able to cancel the first, second, or the last leg of your connecting flight , except if you’ve purchased a non-refundable flight. That said, it definitely won’t be cheap. You’ll need to pay any differences in ticket prices plus flight cancellation fees , which range between 100-200$.

So for example, if your cheaper, connecting flight costs 200$ and a direct flight 400$, for canceling the first leg of the connecting flight, you’d have to pay 200$ (400$ minus 200$) plus a 100-300$ flight cancellation fee, which is different for each airline.

To cancel a part of a connecting flight, you need to call the airline, find out if that’s possible, and pay any required fees. If you still haven’t bought the connecting ticket, it’s usually cheaper to buy a direct flight .

Is Hidden City Ticketing Worth It?

Hidden city ticketing is only worth it when you’re planning on skipping the last leg of the flight because skipping the first one will cancel the whole flight. In a few instances, you can save hundreds of dollars by doing hidden city ticketing.

I n the picture above, I found a hidden city flight from New York to Paris where I could save 142 EUR . A direct flight from New York to Paris costs 387 EUR. A connecting flight on the same date from New York to Malaga with a connection in Paris costs just 245 EUR. So if I’d purchase the cheaper one, I could just leave when I land at the Paris airport and save 142 EUR. In cases like that, hidden city ticketing is definitely worth it.

Another thing worth mentioning is that you can’t have checked baggage when hidden city ticketing . That’s because your checked bags will most likely automatically be forwarded to the final destination when you land at the connecting airport. You could ask the airline to short-check your bag, but they most likely won’t allow that because they might suspect that you won’t be showing up for the next flight.

And lastly, hidden city ticketing can be risky because sometimes the connecting airport may change, especially during the Pandemic . If the connecting country closes down or the connecting airports raise their fees, the airline might choose a different connecting airport, and you’ll be stuck with a useless flight.

Airlines have banned the practice, but it hasn’t stopped fliers from doing it.

Earlier this week, an unaccompanied minor departing Gainesville Regional Airport in Florida found himself in headlines after he was denied boarding to an American Airlines flight. He hadn’t committed a crime, nor was he accused of being unruly.

His offense? Attempting to make use of a money-saving hack that gutsy fliers use every year.

It’s called skiplagging, and although it sounds playful enough, it’s hardly a game in airlines’ minds. In fact, most carriers regard it as a form of fraud.

Here’s everything you need to know about the controversial practice.

What is skiplagging?

“Skiplagging — or ‘hidden-city ticketing’ — is booking a trip where you plan on getting off at a layover city and throwing away the last leg or legs of a flight,” explains Clint Henderson, an industry expert and a managing editor for the Points Guy.

“Say I want to fly to Miami from New York,” he says. “Prices are high if I book direct, but if I fly New York to Miami to Orlando, I can save $130. I could book that, pocket the savings, and then get off the plane in Miami instead of continuing on to Orlando.”

It might seem counterintuitive: You’re ultimately flying fewer miles in the sky, so why should it cost more money on the ground? Well, airlines typically price flights with a connection at a lower rate than directs because the latter are often in higher demand. Plus, as Henderson points out, carriers want to route as many passengers as possible through their dedicated hubs to increase efficiency and thereby cut costs. That means you can usually save money by connecting through one of these primary bases of operation.

In the case of the teen in Gainesville, he was booked on a flight to New York City by way of Charlotte — a major hub for American Airlines. His family is based in North Carolina, however, so he never had plans to get on the connecting flight to New York, his father, Hunter Parsons, told local media. Gate agents became suspicious of his intent after seeing his North Carolina license. That’s when he was pulled aside for questioning, his ticket was canceled and the family had to purchase a new one, Parsons said.

Multiple news outlets have reported that the teen was “detained” during the incident, but a spokesperson for American Airlines refutes that description.

“Our records indicate the customer was questioned only at the ticket counter about their travel, while attempting to check-in for their flight,” AA spokeswoman Andrea Koos said in an email. “A member of our customer relations team has been in touch with them to address their concerns.”

What are airline policies on skiplagging?

The fact that the teen was denied boarding underscores how serious airlines take skiplagging. It makes sense, because the practice saps revenue from them on two fronts: Not only do passengers underpay — potentially by hundreds of dollars per ticket — but the seat on the tossed leg also could have been sold to someone else.

Most contracts of carriage from major airlines expressly forbid skiplagging as a result. If an airline catches you trying to do so, it could cancel your whole itinerary. Henderson also points to examples of travelers having frequent-flier miles and memberships rescinded, or even rare instances of passengers getting sued.

“The airlines are getting increasingly sophisticated and smart about it,” he adds. “I expect that will get even more prevalent as technology improves further.”

How to get a refund for your canceled flight

In the meantime, it remains a somewhat sticky subject in travel. It can be difficult to prove what a passenger’s itinerant intentions truly are.

Matt Meltzer, a Miami-based travel writer, said he has saved hundreds of dollars on flights by skiplagging over the past several years. He views the teen’s recent experience as an outlier and doesn’t think gate agents at major hubs are looking for skiplagging.

“If I was getting on that flight and someone accused me of not intending to fly to New York, I’d just say: ‘Nope! Got “Hamilton” tickets tomorrow night. Very excited. Go Mets!’”

And it’s not exactly a solid business practice to preemptively accuse your paying customers of fraud. Representatives from both Delta and United declined to comment for this story; Delta pointed to a link to the airline’s Contract of Carriage, which expressly prohibits hidden-city ticketing. United , American and Southwest also prohibit the practice in their contracts.

So should you skip skiplagging?

Despite airlines banning the practice, some travelers are shirking the rules — and there are resources dedicated to helping them do it. Most notable is Skiplagged.com , which helped popularize the practice, and the term itself, when the site launched in 2013. (United Airlines and Orbitz unsuccessfully tried to sue the site a year later.)

The flight-booking hack dividing the internet

Be forewarned: On top of earning the ire of airlines, skiplagging comes with its own spate of logistical headaches. Chris Dong, a Los Angeles-based travel writer and points expert who used to skiplag, says you especially can’t do this on a round-trip flight.

“Airlines will cancel your return flight if you’re a ‘no show’ for any segment of a booked itinerary,” Dong said in an email.

If there’s a schedule change, or if a flight is delayed or rerouted, which can be common in a stormy, busy travel season , then, as Dong points out, “there’s a possibility your entire skiplag plan could go out the window.”

Finally, Henderson introduces another pitfall: “What if you are last to board, and they make you check your carry-on?”

“You’ll be in trouble, because your bag will end up in the wrong city,” he said. “The airlines can take your loyalty account, ban you from the airline and even sue you. It’s definitely not worth the risk to try this just to save a few dollars. Don’t do it!”

A teen that wanted to skip his last leg of travel to save money on his airfare is bringing to light a travel hack that got him in trouble with American Airlines by using a controversial strategy: skiplagging.

“Skiplagging,” or booking a flight with a layover to skip the last leg of travel, is a common hack for travelers who don’t want to pay for a direct flight, but it ultimately ends up costing the airlines for seats on planes. Or travelers use it to get cheaper tickets to a destination.

It’s also sometimes known as “hidden city” ticketing.

For example, an airline may charge more for a ticket from Dallas to Cleveland than it does for Dallas to New York. But in certain instances, the plane may connect in Cleveland and the passenger can simply walk off the plane for less money.

That’s because sometimes an airline charges lower fares between destinations to stimulate demand or move aircraft and crew.

According to Insider, a teen planned to ditch during his layover in Charlotte, instead of New York City, where his final leg of travel ended. His father told Insider that he was caught when a gate agent noticed his North Carolina ID.

“The practice of hidden city ticketing is prohibited by American’s Conditions of Carriage and agency agreements,” said Curtis Blessing, spokesman at American Airlines. “In some cases, there are entities acting as accredited agents of American, but fraudulently obtaining American’s content and misrepresenting its products and services to the detriment of the traveling public.”

If a customer knowingly or unknowingly purchases a ticket and doesn’t fly all the segments in their itinerary, it can lead to operational issues with checked bags and prevent other customers from booking a seat, Blessing said.

“Intentionally creating an empty seat that could have been used by another customer or team member is an all-around bad outcome,” Blessing said.

In 2021, American released a notice to travel agents that it would be monitoring bookings for this sort of behavior, according to SimpleFlying. There’s even a website called Skiplagged.com , which claims to “find flights the airlines don’t want you to see.” In 2015, a Chicago judge threw out a lawsuit from United Airlines against the website, according to CNN .

While it isn’t illegal to skiplag, the airlines can take further action against a passenger who tries to take advantage. Southwest Airlines ’ contract of carriage states “purchasing a ticket without intending to fly all flights to gain lower fares” as a prohibited booking practice. American’s conditions of carriage states the same language for a prohibited practice.

It also doesn’t work with round-trip tickets. Airlines usually cancel future legs of a trip if a passenger misses an earlier flight.

Airlines can ban or suspend customers from future flights if they discover the behavior.

Airlines often charge extra to fly on nonstop flights. One stark example of this is found on transcontinental flights. For example, when we checked for a nonstop flight from San Francisco to Newark on Sept. 9, the cost was $268 one way in basic economy, or $298 for standard economy.

However, searching through Skiplagged, you could have booked a "nonstop" on the same route for just $144 one way. You just need to book it as a flight from San Francisco to Charleston routing through Newark.

Skiplagged is a legit way to reduce the cost of certain flights. By booking a hidden-city ticket, you might be able to save hundreds of dollars off the cost of a flight.

Understandably, airlines hate this practice and have tried to get it shut down. That's why United Airlines and Orbitz teamed up to sue Skiplagged back in 2014. When they lost their legal battle with Skiplagged, airlines turned their attention to punishing passengers for engaging in this practice.

And this leads to why you should be careful about using Skiplagged. Even if you can save some of your hard-earned money, there are several downsides to hidden-city and throwaway ticketing.

Saving hundreds of dollars on a flight is undoubtedly appealing. However, booking a Skiplagged hidden-city ticket comes with several risks. These include hassles from having to carry on a bag up to significant issues like potentially forfeiting all of your airline miles.

No checked bags

You shouldn't check a bag when flying on a Skiplagged ticket. That's because your checked bag will be tagged through to your final destination — a destination you aren't going to. And no, you can't just convince the check-in agent to just check it through to your actual destination. That's a huge red flag for these agents and will likely lead to some additional scrutiny.

The only exception to the no-bag rule is when both of the following are true:

Your intended destination is also your first U.S. airport after an international flight.

You don't clear immigration and customs at a Customs and Border Protection Preclearance facility before your flight.

In this case, you can collect your checked bag to clear customs when arriving in the United States. Then, you can skip over the bag recheck area after clearing customs. But even in these cases, it's still not a good idea to check a bag.

No round-trip flights

When booking a Skiplagged ticket, you aren't going to be able to book a round trip. That's because the airline will cancel all of your remaining flights once you miss your first flight.

Say you want to fly from Atlanta to Paris. You might find a cheaper itinerary from Atlanta through Paris onto Budapest. However, if you skip your flight from Paris to Budapest, the airline will cancel your flights home. And you won't be able to save them even if you were to make your way to Budapest for your flights home.

The lack of being able to book a round-trip flight can make Skiplagged impractical. One-way flights — especially international one-way flights — can be much more expensive than just booking a round-trip flight.

Schedule changes can ruin your Skiplagged ticket

Airlines are constantly tweaking their flight plans. And these schedule changes can wreck your best laid plans.

For example, I booked a round-trip flight from Munich to New York connecting in Charlotte. In a schedule update a couple of months in advance of my flight, the airline canceled my Munich-Charlotte return flight. Instead, the airline routed me on a flight through London on the way to New York.

I personally don't risk booking throwaway tickets. However, this shows how a scheduled change could wreck a hidden-city ticket. If you booked this itinerary hoping to get a cheap flight from Munich to Charlotte, you'd be stuck on a flight through London to New York instead. The best you can do is request a refund because of the flight cancellation and rebook another option.

Getting on the airline's bad side

Many airlines expressly forbid hidden-city ticketing in the terms and conditions that you agree to when purchasing a ticket. Violating these rules won't mean a police officer meets you at the gate. What you're doing isn't illegal — it's just against the airline's rules. And that can come with consequences.

For one, your mileage account could get shut down. That would mean losing your accumulated miles and any elite status you have with the airline. To avoid this fate, even Skiplagged recommends that you don't put your mileage account on your ticket.

Not listing your frequent flier account means you'll lose out on mileage earnings and credit card perks, such as preferred boarding. That comes with its own set of downsides. Boarding last might mean having to gate-check your carry-on bag — which would then be checked to your final destination.

Some airlines have taken things further. American Airlines passengers report receiving a bill from the airline. That's something that the airline gives itself the option to do in the contract you agree to when booking a flight. Another American passenger reported being met at the airport by an agent to explicitly warn them against using Skiplagged tickets. Lufthansa went so far as to sue a passenger for using hidden-city ticketing, seeking thousands of dollars in damages.

Booking a hidden-city ticket is a legit way to save money by booking a cheaper flight that connects through your intended destination. And Skiplagged makes it as easy as ever to find these lower-cost throwaway tickets.

However, it doesn't come without potential consequences. Airlines have tightened their regulations to explicitly forbid hidden-city ticketing. If you break the rules enough, the airline might end up sending you a bill or even taking you to court to recuperate the savings.

It’s called skiplagging, a travel hack that some fliers use to score cheaper airfares. here are the airlines’ policies regarding the practice..

A cheaper flight, but at what cost?

In an era of high airfares , travelers will often get creative to find cheaper flights—and while that craftiness can be admirable, it’s also a bit risky. Case in point: A strategy known as “skiplagging” has been making headlines after a teenager who was flying with American Airlines last week from Florida to New York, and planned to get off in the connecting city of Charlotte, North Carolina, was prohibited from boarding the original flight and asked to rebook a direct flight to Charlotte.

At the airport in Florida, when Logan Parsons presented his North Carolina driver’s license, an American Airlines agent “kind of got out of him that he was planning to disboard in Charlotte and [was] not going to make the connecting flight,” Hunter Parsons, Logan’s father, told local news agency Queen City News . The agent canceled the ticket and made the family buy a direct flight to Charlotte.

Here’s what travelers should know about skiplagging, including the risks and airlines’ official policies regarding the practice.

What is skiplagging?

Skiplagging is the practice of booking a connecting flight that is lower priced than a nonstop flight and not flying the final leg (or legs) of the flight. It is also known as hidden city ticketing,

“Plain and simply, hidden city ticketing is a way to find a direct flight without the direct flight price tag. Stumbling on a cheaper connecting flight that just so happens to stop in your desired city means you can technically get to where you want to go for considerably less,” explains Katy Nastro, spokesperson and travel expert with flight deals newsletter Going.com .

Nastro offered this example. Say, for example, you wanted to fly from New York to Los Angeles, and the direct flight cost $114, but there is a flight to Dallas from New York with a connection in Los Angeles that costs only $84. “You have just found a hidden city ticket, which means you can turn a connecting flight to Dallas into a direct flight to Los Angeles, hop out at your connection and pay 26 percent less than you would have paid to fly direct.”

How do you find skiplag or hidden city ticket flights?

You can, of course, scour travel booking sites like Google Flights or Kayak in search of skiplag options, but as you can imagine, it’s a bit of challenge because you are actually searching for a destination city that doesn’t match your true destination. So, using Nastro’s example above, you would need to search numerous flights from New York to destinations other than Los Angeles to discover whether there are some cheaper flights that fly through Los Angeles. The more you search, the better you are likely to become at identifying which routes typically have specific layovers.

The main resource for finding these flights more easily is a website called Skiplagged that does the work for you.

Skiplagged was founded in 2013 in an effort to disrupt the airline airfare model by automating the process of finding more affordable hidden city tickets. And it was the website Hunter Parsons used to book the American Airlines flight for his son from Gainesville to New York via Charlotte.

“We’ve used Skiplagged almost exclusively for the last five to eight years,” Hunter Parsons told Queen City News.

What are the airlines’ policies regarding skiplagging?

All of the major U.S. airlines have policies prohibiting the practice of skiplagging—or what they refer to as hidden city ticketing—written into their contract of carriage statements.

According to American Airlines’ conditions of carriage , “Reservations made to exploit or circumvent fare and ticket rules are prohibited,” including “purchasing a ticket without intending to fly all flights to gain lower fares,” or what is known as hidden city ticketing.

American states that “if we find evidence that you or your agent are using a prohibited practice,” the airline reserves the right to cancel any unused part of the ticket; refuse to let the passenger fly; not refund an otherwise refundable ticket; or charge what the ticket would have cost.

Can you be banned from flying?

American Airlines does not say anything about banning passengers for the practice, but United Airlines does.

In United’s contract of carriage document , hidden city ticketing is also listed as a prohibited practice. And when passengers violate its rules, United says that it reserves the right to invalidate the ticket(s); cancel any remaining portion of the passenger’s itinerary; assess a fee for “seat blocking,” delete miles, points, or credits from a passenger’s frequent flier account; and/or “permanently ban or refuse to board the passenger.”

Delta Air Lines, too, prohibits hidden city ticketing but doesn’t get into the long list of possible repercussions that American and United provide. Southwest also has a clearly defined policy against hidden city bookings, and JetBlue remarks in its contract of carriage that “fares apply only between the points named and via the routing as shown in carrier’s current schedule and are not applicable to or from intermediate points.” It doesn’t say anything more on the topic.

What are the risks involved in skiplagging?

“It is not illegal to engage in throwaway ticketing” Gary Leff, founder of the View from the Wing blog, wrote in a post last week about skiplagging, following the American Airlines incident.

While it may not be illegal, there are ample risks associated with skiplagging, beyond any repercussions passengers might encounter for violating the airlines’ rules.

“If your flight is delayed or canceled , your airline may want to reroute you through a different hub than the city you actually wanted to fly to,” writes Leff. “You can’t check bags, because those will go to your final ticketed destination rather than where you’re flying. And if you’re forced to gate check a bag when overhead bins are full, you’re in a bind. Plus, you can only book these one-way because if you throw away anything other than the last flight in your itinerary, the rest of the trip gets canceled.” In other words, if you skiplag on the outbound ticket of a round-trip flight, you risk having the return flight invalidated. This is why Leff mentions that this is best done only for one-way flights.

Even Skiplagged admits on its website that there are several risks to be aware of when booking a hidden city ticket, including the possibility of being rerouted, for instance when airlines are forced to make weather-related itinerary changes.

Additionally, Skiplagged recommends “only bringing a backpack that can fit under the seat in front of you. Anything larger risks getting checked at the gate,” and all checked bags are sent to the passenger’s final destination.

It’s also not a good idea to connect a hidden city ticket to your frequent flier account in case the airline decides to invalidate any miles you’ve accrued with them.

“Some airlines may require proof of a return ticket during check-in. If this happens to you, just buy a refundable return ticket directly from the airline and cancel it ASAP after boarding,” Skiplagged advises. And lastly, “Do not overuse hidden-city itineraries. Do not fly hidden-city on the same route with the same airline dozens of times within a short time frame. . . . You might upset the airline, so don’t do this often.”

Ultimately, says Going.com’s Nastro, “It is definitely a practice not for novice travelers. Once in a while, utilizing this technique may help to score a cheaper flight, especially last-minute, but being aware of the nuances and risks is paramount. For example, the twice-a-year vacationer might not be aware that if you try this on a round-trip ticket, the airline will cancel the rest of your itinerary once you are counted as a no-show. The cost of that mistake would greatly outweigh the savings of purchasing a hidden city ticket to begin with.”

The only way this will work is if you travel hand luggage only.<<<

As Charlotte will be the first port of entry to the US the OP will be required to retrieve luggage before going through Customs, so won't have to ask for it to be short checked.

You will be fine. Go through immigration and customs, and instead of re-checking your bag and going through security, walk out of the airport to meet your friends.

IF this is the outbound flight for the OP and there are more flights on this ticket it's not only likely, but probable that the return will be cancelled. But I believe that this is the return flight home for the OP.

When Can I Skip a Flight Without Having My Entire Trip Cancelled?

There are many ways to save some dough when booking flights, including flying into (or out of) alternate airports that offer cheaper alternatives. But what happens if you don't want to actually fly the entire itinerary? TPG reader Jason wants to help his aunt, who lives in Michigan but booked a connecting flight to Europe out of Chicago-O'Hare (ORD) instead of a nonstop out of Detroit (DTW), saving over $1,000 on the round-trip ticket...

Generally speaking, whenever you book a flight on any airline, it treats the trip as one, complete itinerary. If you then don't show up for any portion of it, the rest of the unflown flights will be cancelled and then subject to a change fee and possible fare difference if you then try to rebook. As a result, you should never skip a leg in the middle of an itinerary.

An analogy could be made to a chef cooking a recipe. The steps laid out in the recipe are carefully prescribed in a specific order, and leaving one out will run the risk of completely ruining a dish. Sure, the chef can customize each step slightly with different spices and cooking techniques, but the core of the recipe remains consistent. The same holds true for a trip. You're able to personalize it a bit (seat selection, meal choice, etc.) but must keep the core itinerary intact. If you simply skip a flight in the middle of a trip, you'll likely have the rest of it automatically cancelled.

But what about Jason's aunt? Is there anything to stop her from simply not taking her final flight? The short answer is no: since she'll need to claim her bags in Detroit anyway, there's nothing to stop her from simply walking out of the airport as if she has reached her final destination. She technically doesn't even need to let the airline know; when she doesn't board the plane at the designated time, the gate agent will simply fill her spot with a passenger waiting for a seat assignment or on the standby list.

That being said, there are a couple of important caveats if you choose to skip your final flight:

• Make sure you can retrieve your luggage : Some airlines are fine checking bags only to an intermediate destination on an itinerary, especially if you have a long (or overnight) layover. And if your final flight is a domestic connection in the US, you must claim your luggage after clearing customs and then recheck it before your connecting flight. However, skipping the last flight becomes a problem if your bags are checked through to your final destination.
• Make sure you're allowed to enter the intermediate country : If you're trying to do this while connecting through a country (rather than within that country), make sure you have the proper documents to allow this.
• Don't make this a habit : What Jason's aunt is doing is referred to as "throwaway ticketing" where a trip is booked from a different airport to save money but the last flight is thrown away. I actually did this once with an unnamed airline that wanted an insane amount of money for the one-way flight I needed. A round-trip itinerary was 40% cheaper, so I booked the round-trip, flew the outbound, then cancelled the return. Doing it once or even a few times probably won't raise any red flags; doing it consistently could lead the airline to boot you from its frequent flyer program.

(Like the chef analogy? Imagine leaving out the garnish. Not a requirement, but do it enough and a restaurant owner may let you go.)

Airlines are (obviously) out to make money, and they're frequently able to charge a premium for nonstop flights from key destinations due to demand. You in turn can get around these hiked fares by looking at alternate airports, but you generally must then fly the entire itinerary or else risk having the rest of the trip cancelled. The lone exception would be your final flight; if you're fine with the above caveats and are able to skip that last leg for any reason, you shouldn't encounter any problems.

Man Lost His Leg After Tree-Cutting Accident, But He’s Still Alive Thanks to Heroes Who Rescued Him

A man has reunited with the rescue crews who helped save his life after a tree fell on him while he was working in Massachusetts last month.

Crews responded to the scene in Dighton on March 9 and found a man whose leg was pinned underneath a tree, according to a news release from  Dighton Firefighters Local 4332 .

Manuel “Manny” Teixeira, 67, sustained life-threatening head and leg injuries while cutting down a tree on Oak Street,  CBS affiliate WPRI-TV  reported.

Crews quickly determined “the tree was not stable” and posed a threat to both the patient and personnel on scene,” Dighton fire officials said.

Officers Kenneth Almeida and Aaron Swartz “worked to provide life-saving medical aid” to Teixeira, “which included the use of multiple tourniquets,” until paramedics arrived at the scene, according to  Dighton Police .

Eventually, crews “were able to safely remove the tree from the patient, utilizing technical lifting equipment.” The ordeal lasted less than 15 minutes after authorities were contacted.

Teixeira was transported to the Rhode Island Hospital Level 1 Trauma Center. His injured leg was later amputated.

Officers Almeida and Swartz were honored for their efforts at a Board of Selectmen meeting on Wednesday, April 24. The duo received letters of commendation for their response to the incident, which likely saved Teixeira’s life.

They also had the opportunity to reunite with Teixeria, who is still recovering from his amputation.

“These officers relied on the training they have acquired throughout their years of service and their quick action helped to save this man’s life,” Police Chief George Nichols said in the DPD’s news release.

Dighton firefighters thanked Teixeria for sharing his story and wished him “a speedy recovery."

Meanwhile, Teixeira is thankful to be alive, according to  NBC affiliate WJAR .

"If it wasn't for them, I don't know where I would be. I wouldn't be here today," Teixeira said.

WASHINGTON — In an effort to crack down on airlines that charge passengers steep fees to check bags and change flights, the U.S. Department of Transportation has announced new regulations aimed at expanding consumer protections .

One of the final rules announced Wednesday requires airlines to show the full price of travel before passengers pay for their tickets. The other will force airlines to provide prompt cash refunds when flights are canceled or significantly changed.

"Passengers deserve to know upfront what costs they are facing and should get their money back when an airline owes them - without having to ask," said Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg in a statement announcing the new rules.

Taking on junk fees is popular. But can it win Biden more voters?

Surprise junk fees have become a large and growing source of revenue for airlines in recent years, according to the DOT.

"Today's announcements will require airlines to both provide passengers better information about costs before ticket purchase, and promptly provide cash refunds to passengers when they are owed — not only saving passengers time and money, but also preventing headaches," Buttigieg said.

The airline industry is unlikely to welcome the new rules. At a hearing on the proposed fee rule in March 2023, an industry lobbying group representing American, Delta and United said it would be too difficult for airlines to disclose their charges more clearly.

"The amount of unwanted and unneeded information forced upon passengers" by the new policy would only cause "confusion and frustration," warned Doug Mullen, the deputy general counsel at Airlines for America . "Very few, if any, need or want this information, and especially when they are initially trying to understand schedule and fare options."

But the DOT insists its new rule will give consumers the information they need to better understand the true costs of air travel.

"I believe this is to the benefit of the sector as a whole," Buttigieg said in an interview with NPR's Morning Edition , because passengers will have "more confidence in the aviation sector."

The new rules require airlines to disclose all baggage, change, and cancellation fees, and to share that information with third-party booking sites and travel agents.

The regulation also prohibits bait-and-switch tactics, the DOT says, that disguise the true cost of flights by advertising a low base fare that does not include all mandatory fees.

"This is really about making sure that we create a better experience for passengers, and a stronger aviation sector in the United States," Buttigieg said in the NPR interview.

Secretary of State Antony J. Blinken arrived in China on Wednesday to try to preserve the recent and delicate stabilization of ties between the United States and China, as tensions over trade, territorial disputes and national security threaten to derail relations again.

Even before Mr. Blinken’s plane approached Shanghai, the challenges ahead were apparent. He landed just hours after the U.S. Senate passed a bill , which President Biden is expected to quickly sign into law, that provides $8 billion to Taiwan and the Indo-Pacific region, and could also lead to a nationwide ban on the Chinese-owned app TikTok .

The political season in the United States also looms as a complication. With the presidential election nearing, Democrats and Republicans are vying to appear tougher on China. And if former President Donald Trump is re-elected, he could reverse Beijing’s and Washington’s efforts to steady the relationship.

During Mr. Blinken’s three-day trip, which will also include a visit to Beijing, he plans to press Chinese officials on a wide range of issues, including its support for Russia, cheap Chinese exports that U.S. officials say threaten American jobs, and Chinese ships’ aggressive maneuvers in the South China Sea, a senior State Department official told reporters in a telephone briefing.

Chinese officials are likely to bring up American support for Taiwan, the self-governing island that China claims, and trade restrictions that Beijing calls discriminatory.

Mr. Blinken is expected to meet with China’s foreign minister, Wang Yi. It is not clear whether he will meet with China’s leader, Xi Jinping, as he did during his last visit , in June.

That visit — the first by an American secretary of state to China since 2018 — came at perhaps the worst moment in U.S.-China relations in recent years. High-level military communications were cut off, and neighboring countries worried that the two powers might stumble into a war.

Since then, relations have thawed somewhat. China’s economy is slowing, and Beijing has adopted a softer diplomatic tone to attract more foreign investment. Washington, though continuing to warn that China poses a global security threat, has said it wants to keep communication open.

In November, Mr. Biden and Mr. Xi met for four hours near San Francisco. Afterward, China agreed to resume cooperation with the United States on fighting the global production of fentanyl, and both countries affirmed the importance of restoring cultural exchanges. The two leaders also spoke by phone this month.

Last week, the countries’ top defense officials held a video conference, their first substantive engagement since late 2022.

But new sources of tension are rising. Western officials have grown increasingly vocal about concerns that China is backing Russia in its war in Ukraine. Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen, during her own visit to China earlier this month, warned of “ significant consequences ” if Beijing provides material support. China has maintained that it is not, while deepening ties with Moscow. Mr. Xi hosted Russia’s foreign minister this month, and President Vladimir V. Putin of Russia is expected to visit China soon.

U.S. officials have also said China is dumping cheap electric vehicles and solar panels in overseas markets, hurting American companies. China has rejected the accusations as smacking of protectionism.

Chinese ships’ aggressive behavior in waters disputed with the Philippines and Japan has also raised concerns about a possible clash that could draw in the United States, a treaty ally of those countries.

On Taiwan, perhaps the most sensitive issue in the U.S.-China relationship, the island is set to inaugurate its new president , Lai Ching-te — whom Beijing reviles as an advocate of Taiwanese independence — next month.

Asked at a regular news briefing on Wednesday about Congress’s new aid for Taiwan, Wang Wenbin, a spokesman for China’s foreign ministry, said that stronger military cooperation between the United States and Taiwan would “not bring about security for Taiwan” and would “only escalate tensions across the Taiwan Strait.”

China’s defense minister, Dong Jun, had told U.S. Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin during their call that China would “brook no compromise” on Taiwan, according to the Chinese readout .

Mr. Wang declined to answer repeated questions about TikTok on Wednesday. He referred reporters to previous statements from China’s Ministry of Commerce, which has said it would “ firmly oppose ” a sale of the app.

Within the United States, anti-China rhetoric is likely to intensify as the Democrats and Republicans compete to outdo each other on one of the few areas of bipartisan agreement. Campaigning last week in Pennsylvania, a steelworking stronghold, Mr. Biden called for raising tariffs on steel imports from China.

“We had high hopes after the San Francisco summit, but recent developments are putting a lot of stress on the relationship,” said Xie Tao, the dean of the School of International Relations and Diplomacy at Beijing Foreign Studies University. “When you add all these negative developments together, you have a pretty depressing picture of the U.S.-China relationship right now.”

Both countries have reason to try to prevent escalating tensions. The United States has asked China to help restrain Iran, with which it has good relations, from pushing its hostilities with Israel into full-blown war. And China is eager to stave off further tariffs from the United States, as strong exports have helped it counterbalance its housing crisis and weak consumer spending.

But both countries may also have little room for diplomatic maneuvering, because of hardening public opinion on both sides.

“There are already so many irritants and issues of mistrust within the relationship,” said Allen Carlson, a professor of international relations at Cornell University.

“If you have a pot which is already close to boiling, it only takes adding a degree or two to push things over the edge.”

'Amazing Race' season 36 recap: Did the Wisconsin firefighter moms survive the leg in Uruguay?

Warning: Spoilers ahead from Episode 7 of CBS' "The Amazing Race" season 36 that aired on Wednesday, April 24.

Wisconsin firefighters Sunny Pulver and Bizzy Smith came into tonight's episode of "The Amazing Race" aiming for the stars.

"The goal today is to get first place," said Smith, who lives in New Berlin.

"First place," her partner, Pulver, who lives in Edgerton, reiterated for the camera before they departed from the top of Fortaleza del Cerro in Montevideo, Uruguay.

It might have been a reach given that they were once again starting from the back of the pack like they were all season. But viewers of season 36 of the CBS reality competition TV show know by now not to count these self-proclaimed "badasses" out .

However, their season-long navigation problems resurfaced at the worst time during tonight's episode.

And when they checked in at the pit stop host Phil Keoghan wasn't telling them that they were "Team No. 1" like they had hoped hours earlier.

Unfortunately, he told them that they were the last team to arrive and were eliminated. After Milwaukee native and Custer High School graduate Shelisa Williams and her husband Derek were eliminated in episode 6, it was the second straight week a team with a Wisconsin connection saw their dream for the $1 million prize end.

But you wouldn't have known it by Pulver's and Smith's demeanor on the mat this week.

"Look at these big smiles," Keoghan said to Pulver and Smith at Playa Malvín, the site of the pit stop. "Probably the biggest smiles ever for any team being eliminated."

But that was Sunny and Bizzy on "The Amazing Race."

The sisterhood that they shared only grew stronger while running the race, Pulver said.

Smith had the honor of running the race with "a great woman, friend and partner," in Pulver, she told Keoghan.

Amazing Race firefighters went home tonight during episode in Uruguay after navigation problems

"The Amazing Race" experience for Pulver, 41, and Smith, 37, wasn't easy. They weren't at the front of the pack at any point of the race, which meant they were always starting with a disadvantage the following leg by starting well behind a majority of the other teams.

And in addition to the emotional ups and downs that the race presents, Pulver experienced loss back home with news about the death of her grandma ahead of the third leg in Colombia .

Then there were the driving issues at nearly every turn each leg, something that could frustrate even the most mentally tough teams. But through it all, their teammwork and focus in the tasks allowed them to pass teams when it mattered most in previous episodes and survive several close calls .

That left them optimistic for the start of the seventh leg. Six of the 13 teams had already been eliminated heading into Wednesday's show. There was little room for error as they left with the fifth and sixth-place teams from the previous leg, 30 minutes behind teams 1 and 2 and 15 minutes behind teams 3 and 4.

Up first was the Roadblock challenge. One team member had to weld two pieces of metal together at a correct angle to withstand the impact of a hammer.

Pulver, noting her experience in welding for firefighting, completed the task in her second attempt.

They left the Roadblock in sixth place ahead of dating couple Yvonne Chavez and Melissa Main. But their slight advantage evaporated when they got lost driving to their next clue — the historic neighborhood of Ciudad Vieja — that would tell them where their Detour challenge would be.

Pulver and Smith eventually found the clue box but not before spending so much time driving around the area. But when they learned that one of the Detour options had teams perform a drum routine, there was some optimism. Smith noted she played the drums in high school.

They again completed that task with relative ease. But Pulver and Smith had too much time to make up even if the show made it initially appear like there could have been a photo finish.

Yes, they would have wanted to win this leg to be awarded a destination trip — customary for the winning team of each leg. It's something they even mentioned at the start of this episode in a fun exchange.

"We need to win some vacations," Smith said at the beginning of the episode. "Some money, something for the kids. We gotta," Pulver added.

"No, this vacation, I need to win a vacation for myself," Smith said. The exchange continued: "I can’t wait to be with the kids and the family."

It was fitting Pulver mentioned her kids and family. The two said in the season premiere over a month ago how they wanted to be an inspiration for their children and working moms.

It was clear they achieved what they set out to do even if they didn't win "The Amazing Race."

"I'm like a new person and rejuvenated," Smith told Keoghan, and that the experience shows that you can "reach for the stars" in your goals.

Former NFL player on Amazing Race: Rod Gardner, wife Leticia Gardner are in third place after tonight's episode

Rod and Leticia Gardner continue to have big goals on "The Amazing Race."

They have been one of the more consistent teams all season and have been out front every leg .

Rod Gardner, who played two games for the Green Bay Packers in the 2005 season and whose intensity comes across every episode, was in the right mindset during this leg.

"I feel the adrenaline pumping," Rod said to the camera while driving to the Roadblock at the start of the episode. "This is what I live for, like I love the challenge of whatever’s ahead of us. I don’t even know what we have to do. But I’m up for the challenge. And I like this part of the game.

"Game time has started."

Rod delivered during the "games" in this episode.

Rod crushed the Roadblock welding challenge and passed two teams to leave in first place.

Unlike last week when teams were helping each other out in tasks and in navigation, it was every team for themselves this episode.

As a result, we saw one team — dating couple Amber Craven and Vinny Cagungun — crack under pressure when things got tough. That wasn't the Gardners even when other teams passed them when driving to get their next clue.

The married couple complements each other and understand each other's strengths and weaknesses. They have the ultimate confidence even when things don't go their way. And despite not getting back to the top this episode they finished in third place for a second straight leg, easily advancing and looking strong in the process.

Leticia has repeatedly talked about making her kids proud back home. It's a safe bet her three children were proud of mom and dad again.

Amazing Race is heading to Barbados in next week's episode: Spoilers

In the preview to next week's episode, Keoghan told viewers that "The Amazing Race" will head to Barbados for the first time in the show's history.

Episode 8, titled "That's What Being Strong Will Do," has teams visiting the childhood home of superstar Rihanna.

What else is in store for the final six? The next episode airs at 8:30 p.m. Wednesday, May 1.

An Air New Zealand passenger was left with a broken leg in the air for over 6 hours after severe turbulence

• A man suffered a broken leg due to severe turbulence on an Air New Zealand flight.
• It happened 30 minutes into a seven-hour journey from Indonesia to Auckland.
• The crew asked other passengers to move seats so he could lie down for the rest of the trip.

A 47-year-old man had to endure six-and-a-half hours in the air with a broken leg after severe turbulence on a flight, the New Zealand Herald reported.

Niko, a German who's been living in Bali for 13 years, was flying with Air New Zealand from Indonesia to Auckland on Tuesday. The newspaper reported he and his partner, Sasha, were heading on vacation for around three weeks.

On board the Boeing 787 Dreamliner , Niko visited the bathroom 30 minutes into the flight — but the jet encountered turbulence on his way back to his seat, per the Herald, breaking his leg in the process.

A friend who picked Niko up from Auckland Airport told the Herald: "His leg pretty much snapped in half." He added that Niko suffered a fractured tibia and fibula.

There was a doctor on board the flight, but only paracetamol was available to try and ease Niko's pain, the Herald reported. That meant he was left suffering for the rest of the seven-hour flight.

"Crew asked some passengers to move from their seats so he was able to lie down for the remainder," the friend added.

The local ambulance service confirmed to the Herald that they attended an incident at the airport around 5:40 a.m.

Air New Zealand also confirmed the incident to the newspaper. The airline did not immediately respond to a request for comment sent by Business Insider outside local working hours.

The airline's chief operational integrity and safety officer told the Herald that a flight would only divert if it was operationally viable, and the team was "sufficiently concerned" about the injured person's welfare.

Coincidentally, this incident comes a month after another Boeing 787 suddenly dropped on its way to Auckland Airport, injuring 50 people. Reports said it was caused by a flight attendant accidentally hitting a switch in the cockpit that pushed the pilot's chair into the controls.

Both incidents serve as reminders for airline passengers to wear their seatbelts whenever possible — even if the cabin sign is off. But sometimes, as in Niko's case, bad luck can't be avoided.

The Oklahoma City Thunder have heard about their inexperience all year long. It is one of two concerns any consumer can raise about a 57-win team in the toughest conference the NBA has ever seen.

On Saturday, the team will embark on another first for this young group - their first playoff round game. Though, that is a bit of a technicality.

For all the hoopla that will follow Oklahoma City this postseason as they enter their year of firsts, the only place they have experience is inside the Smoothie King Center.

The exclamation mark on the 2022-23 season for the upstart Thunder is their play-in tournament win over the New Orleans Pelicans last April. Fighting their way through a sea of red to eliminate the Pelicans from the posteason.

Despite falling the next game in Minnesota to end a game shy of their first trip to the NBA Playoffs, the Thunder earned valuable experience on the road in a high stakes game.

Despite the rocking atmosphere in the Bayou, the Thunder weathered the storm and now knows what it takes to win in NOLA.

Without getting caught off guard by the road crowd, a win on Saturday afternoon would almost assure a series victory. In what is a pseudo must-win contest for the Pelicans as no team has ever mounted a 3-0 comeback.

Florida center Micah Handlogten to sit out next season while recovering from a broken left leg

GAINESVILLE, Fla. (AP) — Florida center Micah Handlogten, who gruesomely broke his left leg in the Southeastern Conference championship game last month, is planning to take a medical redshirt next season and work toward returning to the court and becoming “an absolute monster” in the fall of 2025.

Coach Todd Golden said the decision, which he and Handlogten made during a recent conversation, gives the 7-foot-1 sophomore time to make a full recovery.

“Now he can just pour all his efforts into his rehab and not feel the pressure of ‘I need to try to get back on the court by November,’” Golden said Friday. “My hope is now — obviously not next year but the year after — he should be an absolute monster as he comes back fully healthy with a lot of confidence on the leg.

“His recovery is going as well as it could. His mentality has been amazing. I’m really proud of him and the way he’s gone about it, so he’ll be back.”

Handlogten landed awkwardly on his left foot while going for a rebound against Auburn. He immediately fell to the court in pain and rolled onto his side, putting his hands to his face. Handlogten’s parents were escorted onto the court to be by his side. Handlogten’s leg was stabilized in an air cast before he was placed on a backboard and taken off the court on a stretcher.

He had a rod and two screws inserted into his leg at nearby Vanderbilt University Medical Center, but he still managed to rejoin the team for the NCAA Tournament in Indianapolis a few days later. The Gators lost to Colorado in the opening round with Handlogten watching from behind the bench.

Handlogten started 32 games this season and averaged 5.3 points and 6.9 rebounds. He led the team with 108 offensive rebounds and ranked third with 29 blocks.

Golden signed Washington State center Rueben Chinyelu and Chattanooga forward Sam Alexis out of the NCAA transfer portal in hopes of helping fill holes left by Tyrese Samuel’s graduation and Handlogten’s injury.

“He’s doing great,” Golden said. “Just talking to him, it would be best for him to know that he doesn’t feel pressured to get back quick, which we didn’t want him to feel anyway. So, when we had that conversation, it was great. It provided clarity to him.”

7 hikers arrested for attempting dangerous Hawaii hike before its permanent removal

People are flocking to Hawaii’s arguably most infamous – and illegal – hike , the Stairway to Heaven, before it is removed for good. Arrests and dozens of citations have immediately ensued.

Just two weeks after the announcement of the infamously dangerous Oahu hike’s permanent removal, the Honolulu Police Department on Thursday reported that seven hikers had been arrested for trespassing and 56 had been cited. Over the weekend, around 60 warnings were issued.

Second-degree trespassing is considered a petty misdemeanor and requires a court appearance, HPD said. 

The hike, also known as Haiku Stairs, has been illegal since 1987. Nevertheless, hopeful hikers have continuously trespassed – while causing disturbances – through residential neighborhoods and private property to ascend the nearly 4,000 World War II-era steel stairs for a panoramic view of Oahu. Due to the inclement weather and steepness of the hike, it’s not uncommon for people to have to be rescued, often by helicopter.

The City and County of Honolulu announced on April 10 that the aging stairs would be removed forever in a project Honolulu Major Rick Blangiardi called “long overdue.”

Residents who live by the hike said more people than ever before are trespassing onto their property to access the hike since the announcement, according to KHON2 .

“Be good people and understand it’s not about you and don’t be selfish,” said District Four Commander Maj. Randall Platt in a press conference on Monday, according to KHON2. “Think about what you’re doing to the work people, the environment, it’s all of thise, tracking invasive species in on top of putting the work people at risk on top of putting yourself at risk, it’s really not pono (righteousness) is really what I want to say, it’s not right.”

Ian Schuering, spokesperson for the City and County of Honolulu, told USA TODAY the entire stairway is considered an active work site and extremely hazardous for anyone attempting the hike. 

HPD reminds the public that it is “illegal and unsafe to access Haiku Stairs.” 

As crews are currently preparing the stairs for removal, the first set of stair modules will be flown off the mountain within the next couple of weeks, Schuering said.
