During our last expedition, we had the luck of encountering these couple of coyotes. With our drone sent from the boat we were able to capture this crazy video. After some chasing between them, both went back to the mangroves, leaving us with an unforgettable moment in our memories and a couple of great videos from Magdalena Island 📹🦊🦊 ...

Sometimes, you are the 🎯 of two playful grey whales 🐋 🐋 that just wanna play with you and your boat 🛥️ We had an amazing time during our private grey whale expedition in Magdalena Bay. After 30 min playing with the boat, the whales decided to come and take a closer look to the people on board of our boat. Minutes that will last forever in our memories. ...

Stay to the end and watch what the Gray whale did 😅🐋 💦 Every year, grey whales come to Magdalena Bay and other areas of Baja California Sur, place where they give birth or mate before migrating back to the north. ...

What Guests Have To Say

"Adventure of a Lifetime"

I highly recommend excursions with MagBay Expeditions. They have great attention to detail and go out of their way to make sure you have a good time. The boat captain works hard at making sure he does his best to find you incredible marine life to see. We went on a 5 day excursion to see the bait balls and see more marine life then we could imagine. The groups are small which make the trip even more enjoyable.

"A perfect ocean safari"

I did 5N6D Magbay expedition. Great staffs, eco-friendly, locally connected, nothing to complain, really. Marco was a great communicator through WhatsApp, had no problem in booking process and meet ups. He’s well organized in a timely manner and very much caring for all members. Would lve to be there again if I can.

"Trip of a lifetime!"

Mag Bay expeditions was a trip of a lifetime! Truly, it was beyond anything I could have ever dreamed of! Sabina, Tavo, and the team are so knowledgeable and confident in their field of expertise. I felt comfortable being merely a few feet away from some amazingly beautiful creatures. I got to swim with whales, hundreds of dolphins, sea turtles, sea lions, marlins, mahi mahi, an amazing kelp forest, the list goes on!

"An unique and amazing experience"

I went with Tavo to swim with stripped marlin. To begin with I wasnt expecting the color of the water, so blue you would get lost in it. then out of no where, hundreds of birds plunging into the water, from the outside i just couldn't imagine what was underneath, the concert of animals living, feeding, it was amazing!! we saw at least 20 marlins in the first snorkel. I totally recommend this to anyone interested in a thrilling adventure, in sealife and in experience a once in a lifetime experience.

- Carlos R.

"A True Expedition + Exceptional Customer Service + Nature's Wonders = Memories That Leave You Awed"

We wish we could give MagBay Expeditions 10 stars, plus exclamation marks. It is an expedition in every sense of the word: you travel to a remote site, you search for nature’s wonders and you leave awed and transformed by your experiences. So yes, it hits the bulls eye for expedition, but what makes MagBay Expeditions truly special is the staff’s commitment to service combined with an enthusiastic attention to detail: it was clear from the first moment that us having an exceptional experience was their sole focus. Our overall experience was so mind blowing that we challenged the trip planner of our dive family to find another trip to match the wonder of this expedition – good luck to him!

Frequently Asked Questions

Basic diving or snorkeling gear (mask, gloves, hood, a 5 mm neoprene wetsuit is recommended),  insurance , seasickness pills, reef-safe sunblock, camera, and whatever you think will make your trip more enjoyable.

As we know the weather is a factor that can lead us to modify our day, sometimes we will have to change location, reschedule, modify, or substitute an activity. You will be informed of the options and then can make a decision. Factors that could influence this are rain, high swell, and strong winds.

The Mexican Peso and the American Dollar.

We suggest you get bad weather-related travel insurance, we recommend  World Nomad . A medical and/or dive insurance is mandatory to participate in the expedition.

We don’t encourage people to pet the whales but they are smart animals, and we believe they can make their own decisions when we are out in the water with them. Our captains are very respectful and not aggressive when it comes to encountering whales. We approach them slowly, from a distance, if interactions occur it’s because the whales want it to happen, we don’t chase whales at any point. In case a whale decides to get close, it’s important to know that we can’t pet them in their sensitive areas like eyes and blowhole.

Our team is made up of professionals that always have your safety as a priority during the expeditions. Rules are made to be followed in order to ensure the best possible experiences while being safe.

No, our expeditions are snorkel activities, so the only request is that you know how to swim and use a snorkel. Having some freediving knowledge can improve the experience.

Magdalena Bay Whale Watching

Witness and interact with the friendly California Gray Whale on this incredible adventure set right in the heart of Baja's gray whale territory: Magdalena Bay. Magdalena Bay, a chain of lagoons protected by barrier islands, provides a favored sanctuary and winter nursery for the gray whales that travel over 5,000 miles from the Bering Strait to Baja. From January through March, pods of gray whales mate, raise their young and play in Baja's warm, sheltered waters.

Baja Unbound offers an exclusive adventure as only we have permission to camp on the island so near to the calving grounds. Watch these impressive, friendly whales as they breach, spy-hop, and fluke--and occasionally, you may reach down and actually touch these sociable giants. Spotting whales is a guarantee on these tours, so you don't have to keep your eyes peeled; instead, find yourself immersed in their world. When you're not on the water doing some whale watching, explore Magdalena Bay's incredible ecosystem, where colorful desert flora and mangrove-hedged estauries dot the arid stretches of sand dunes. Enjoy dune hiking, birding throughout mangrove channels and beachcombing.

Our 3 and 4-day Magdalena Bay Whale Watching tours include camping at our exclusive safari-style basecamp set on a secluded beach. With the highest concentration of Baja gray whales right offshore, there's no better place to witness the gray whales as they play.

The area around our camp boasts the highest concentration of whales in Baja. Each day motorized skiffs take you out to the deeper waters of the bay, where "friendly whales" swim up to the skiffs for a closer look and often let guests touch their noses. On shore your guides will take you dune hiking, beachcombing and birding in mangrove channels - a mecca for migratory shorebirds.

magdalena bay europe tour

The camp provides all the gear and amenities you need for a comfortable wilderness experience. Your guides will give entertaining, informative presentations on whale natural history. There's also an extensive library with books on whales. Ideal for families with children ages 8-18 and those wishing a shorter, more focused experience with whales.

For more adventure, add a day of snorkeling around beautiful Isla Coronado in the Sea of Cortez to your Baja whale watching tour. Observe sea lions on rocks, snorkel, sunbathe, eat a picnic lunch and take a nature hike on this hat-shaped cinder cone island with sandy coves.

*NOTE: Day zero is your arrival day to Baja. This itinerary can be run from either Loreto or LaPaz. Please inquire with an Adventure Consultant for additional details. *An additional $100 per person transportation fee will be added for all tours out of La Paz. Add an extention and fly in a day early for a snorkel and skiff tour in the Sea of Cortez! Keep in mind that Baja's gray whale lagoons are protected by the government, and so you may only whale watch with a licensed tour operator like Baja Unbound.

Whale Watching in Magdalena Bay

After breakfast, depart for a 2-hour drive to Magdalena Bay's Puerto Lopez Mateos. Your whale watching adventure beings upon arrival--and you might even be able to spot passing whales from the dock. We explore the bay and enjoy our first meet and greet with the whales before we are ferried to our exclusive Magdalena Bay basecamp situated on a secluded barrier island.

Once we've settled into our camp, enjoy a delicious lunch prepared for you. Then spend your afternoon hiking across wind-swept dunes, taking in the arid landscape and desert flora. Reach camp by sunset just in time for happy hour and a fresh, healthy dinner under Baja's balmy skies.

ACCOMMODATION : Beach Camping

MEALS INCLUDED : Lunch, Dinner

Whale Watching in Magdalena Bay

Wake to the fresh scent of coffee and tea, and possibly fit in an early morning whale-watching session from the beach while the guides prepare your hot breakfast. Today is filled with beachcombing,  swimming, hikes through the island's dunes and, of course, plenty of whale watching.

We take out our motorized skiff in the morning and afternoon for two sessions of whale watching and close encounters with the friendly gray whales. We also have the opportunity to explore the mangrove-lined estuaries filled with flitting birds. With our naturalist guides' studies in marine biology, your time whale watching and birding is both informative and entertaining.

MEALS INCLUDED : Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

3-day trip: Return to Loreto or 4-day trip: Another Day at Whale Camp

For guests embarking on a 3-day journey, the day begins with a final whale-watching session post-breakfast, followed by a serene return to Puerto Lopez Mateos via panga. Upon arrival, we transition to a restaurant managed by the local fishing cooperative for a delectable seafood lunch. Subsequently, we head back to Loreto, typically reaching our destination between 3 and 4 pm. After settling into your hotel, take a refreshing shower or opt for a leisurely stroll along the malecon before joining your group for a farewell dinner (no-host). Here, you can fondly reflect on the marvels of nature encountered during our adventure.

Alternatively, for those indulging in a 4-day voyage, the morning brings another opportunity for whale watching, either alongside our 3-day companions or in a separate panga, contingent upon trip numbers. Following lunch back at camp, we set out for another thrilling whale-watching excursion. Returning to camp, guests can unwind with a leisurely walk or simply enjoy the serene bay, often graced by the presence of dolphins and distant whales. Appetizers are served as we bask in the beauty of a breathtaking sunset, before concluding the day with a delicious dinner and a relaxed evening under the stars.

ACCOMMODATION : On 3-day trip, not included.  On 4-day trip, another night at whale camp.

MEALS INCLUDED : Breakfast, Lunch.  Also dinner for those on a 4-day trip.

Depature Day

This morning, complete your packing and savor a final breakfast at whale camp amidst the invigorating sea breeze. Afterwards, embark on a panga for one last enchanting whale-watching excursion. Spend two unforgettable hours observing these magnificent creatures as we journey southward towards the town of Lopez Mateos. Upon arrival, we'll enjoy a delicious lunch at a restaurant managed by the local fishing cooperative.

Following our meal, we'll drive back to Loreto, aiming to arrive between 3 and 4pm. Upon checking into your hotel, take some time to freshen up with a relaxing shower and perhaps take a leisurely stroll to explore the charming town of Loreto. Later in the evening, gather with your group for a farewell dinner (no-host) where you can fondly reminisce about the awe-inspiring wonders of nature that we've encountered throughout our journey.

ACCOMMODATION : None

Our whale-watching sessions run for two hours each, offering a captivating glimpse into the marine world. While we strive to ensure memorable encounters with these majestic creatures, we cannot guarantee the presence of whales or their calves during our trips. Our whale watching season is carefully timed to coincide with the usual migration patterns of whales in Magdalena Bay. However, we have no control over their movements, arrival, or departure from the bay. To maximize your chances of spotting whales, we have selected conservative dates for our tours.

Additionally, tidal conditions play a crucial role in whale sightings. During low tide, whales may exit the bay and cannot return until tides rise. As the season progresses, we conclude our tours around the third week of March at Magdalena Bay. Depending on various factors, such as weather and wildlife patterns, we may redirect trips either north to San Ignacio Bay or south to Puerto Chale for continued exploration.

While we make every effort to adhere to the itineraries and descriptions outlined on our website, we reserve the right to modify them if deemed necessary to enhance your whale-watching experience or due to unforeseen circumstances. Changes in tour itineraries or subcontractors (such as transportation or accommodation providers) may occur due to factors beyond our control, including Acts of God or adverse weather conditions.

We encourage you to reach out to us with any questions or concerns you may have, and we provide pre-trip emails with updated details closer to your tour date. It is essential to read all communications we send to ensure a seamless experience. Rest assured, we are committed to delivering the best possible tour experience and exceeding your expectations to the best of our ability.

Life-changing experience

The four-day gray whale camping trip with Rafa was particularly well organized. We so valued Rafa's commitment to responsibly enjoying all the gray whales that we saw that day. Rafa’s enthusiasm for seeing these magnificent creatures was almost as fun as seeing the animals themselves! His late afternoon lectures on whale conservation and the history of whaling were particularly interesting. Being so close to gray whales was a life-changing experience that all of us will remember forever. We cannot recommend this tour and these two guides highly enough.

Sea Kayak Row Adventures was amazing! The staff knowledgeable and helpful, the transportation was comfortable and delivered as promised to and from Magdalena Bay. The food good, tents and beds comfortable and, most importantly, the whale watching was exceptional!!!!!!!!!

Can’t wait to go again!

Awesome experience, great guides beautiful place to spend some time Whales were incredible, can’t wait to go again!

What’s the difference between San Ignacio and Magdalena Bay?

Visit this page for a better understanding of which whale watching tour is best for you: San Ignacio Lagoon vs Magdalena Bay .

When is the best time to see whales?

We design our wilderness adventures to provide you with the best whale encounters imaginable. Magdalena Bay is a whale-watchers' paradise and we GUARANTEE gray whale sightings on this tour! The whales migrate down from their Alaskan home waters to calve in Magdalena Bay  from January through mid-March, so this is the only window to see them in Baja.

How long are the whale watching sessions?

You will spend two-hour sessions on the water in motorized skiffs (called pangas) whale watching. Be ready to go immediately when the boat arrives to maximize your time out whale watching, as the 2-hour session starts promptly.

How many people are in a panga during the whale watching session?

All whale watching excursions are in open fiberglass 22-foot motorized boats called “pangas” that hold a maximum of six passengers each, plus a guide and driver. Each panga is equipped with life jackets, radio, first aid kit, and piloted by an experienced, government-licensed Mexican “pangero” who will allow us safe and proximate viewing of the California Gray Whale.

Can I kayak with grey whales?

No kayaks or private boats are allowed in the nursery lagoons of Baja’s Pacific Coast including San Ignacio. Only licensed Mexican whale watching boats are allowed in the lagoons when the whales are present.

Are there any physical requirements?

It is important to understand that this is a camping trip and we want to be sure that you are prepared, both mentally and physically, for the challenges it will present, and have clear expectations about the trip. During the day, we'll spend two hour sessions on the water in motorized skiffs (called pangas) whale watching. While whale watching from a boat is not strenuous and the water is usually calm, the bay can be choppy when it is windy, so if you are susceptible to seasickness, bring medicine or whatever you need. The hiking could best be described as leisurely. We do require that anyone over 70 or with any health or weight concerns consult us before signing up to make sure you are up to fully participating.

What is whale camp like? Are there toilets and showers at camp?

A roomy full-height wall tent with two cots, night stand, rectangular sleeping bag with clean sheet, small pillow, and comfortable self-inflating pad are provided for your convenience at camp. There is also a washroom tent with a portable toilet. We recommend packing biodegradable shower wipes to freshen up with as there is no fresh water at whale camp.

What common space is available?

We have a spacious 30’ wide dome tent that serves as an evening gathering space if it’s too cool or rainy outside (rare) or just a place to get out of the sun during the day.  There are also miles of beach and sand dunes to explore!

How big are the tents at whale camp?

Our tents are 8’ x 12’ and about 7’ tall.  They are made of canvas and have a nice big window on one side.  They are equipped with cots, comfortable sleeping pads, sleeping bags and pillows.

What gear do I need?

Sea Kayak Adventures will provide you with a detailed packing list prior to your trip. We provide all of the necessary camping, paddling and snorkeling equipment, which you will need to fully enjoy your adventure. If you are interested in more specific information, check out our general Baja packing list here ! If you have any questions, or need help deciding what to bring, you can call or e-mail one of our friendly Adventure Consultants at any time for some extra advice!

Who will my guides be?

We know your Guide will make the biggest difference on your trip! Which is why we pride ourselves on employing only the best local guides for all of the incredible locations that we visit. Part of this is to support our eco-tourism efforts, but we also believe that there is no better way to experience a new destination than through they eyes of a local! We find talented and skilled local guides, train and certify them, and provide a positive and consistent source of income to them and their families. Most of our guides are with us for the long-term, despite the seasonal nature of the industry.

What kind of food will I eat? Do you accommodate dietary restrictions?

Our renowned wilderness meals are prepared daily by our guides using local, fresh, healthy ingredients. In Baja you can expect an authentic dining experience, with savory dishes like chiles rellenos, tostadas, ceviche, and chicken mole. We even serve delicious desserts like brownies and pineapple upside-down cake! Each morning, we serve up freshly brewed coffee or tea. Throughout the day we provide an abundance of local fruits, vegetables, and other snacks. Wine and mixed drinks are served with hors d’oeuvres each evening for happy hour.

We do our best to accommodate special dietary requests, working within the parameters of the destinations in which we operate. If you have a very strict diet, we recommend packing extra snacks that you know you can eat.

How many guests per tour?

To keep our group size small and our impact minimal, we typically limit our tours to 14 people or less. Our standard minimum to confirm a departure is 4 guests for our Magdalena Bay whale watching tour.

Is there a single supplement fee for solo travelers?

Solo travelers will typically have their own tent at whale camp, at no additional cost.  However, we are unable to guarantee individual tents at whale camp due to limited tent capacity.  If you are asked to share a tent at our whale camp, rest assured that tents are very spacious, full-height canvas wall tents, with two cots and plenty of room to stand and maneuver around your tent-mate without difficulty.

What’s the weather like in Baja?

Please check out this great website Weather Underground for temperature averages in Baja.

Where can I store my luggage while I’m on your tour?

You can leave your luggage at your hotel while you are on tour. We recommend getting a luggage lock if you are leaving any electronics in the bags. We’ve never had any issues with guests leaving their bags at the hotel but it’s always better to be safe just in case. Please confirm this with your hotel at check in.

Is there a deposit required? Is my deposit refundable?

A deposit of $500 per person is required within 10 days of your reservation to hold your spaces. If the tour you are signing up for is a confirmed departure your deposit is non-refundable. For this reason, we strongly encourage you to purchase travel insurance to protect your vacation investment. US residents may purchase travel insurance directly through ROW Sea Kayak Adventures offered by Travel Insured International .

What is your cancellation policy?

If you find it necessary to cancel your trip, you should notify ROW Sea Kayak Adventures in writing, by e-mail or fax immediately. If written cancellation is received (call to verify) before the final balance is due, you will be given a refund less the amount of deposit. Deposits are not refundable. If cancellations are made on or after the final due date, no money will be refunded. If you are unable to go on the trip, you are welcome to find a replacement for yourself. Please understand that once you've signed up, we are unable to sell your reserved space to other individuals or groups. Therefore, we regret that we cannot make exceptions for personal emergencies. For this reason we strongly recommend you consider purchasing a Travel Protection Plan to protect your vacation investment.

When is payment in full due?

Full payment is due 60 days prior to the launch date, as indicated on your invoice. Due to the high demand for these trips, please be sure to pay your balance on time so as to not jeopardize your reservation. Your final payment must be paid by check or bank draft in US funds.  Alternatively, you may pay your final balance with a credit card, but a 3% administrative fee will be added.

Magdalena Bay Announce First-Ever U.S. Headline Tour

Los Angeles-based electro indie-pop duo Magdalena Bay-a.k.a. Mica Tenenbaum and Matthew Lewin-released their long-awaited debut album, Mercurial World, this Fall to mass critical acclaim.

Now, as the band just wrapped up a largely sold-out support tour with George Clanton, Magdalena Bay announce their first-ever headline tour. See below to find a show near you, and watch a live performance video of "You Lose!" to get a sneak preview of what to expect when you see the duo live and step into their Mercurial World. See below to find a show near you, and get your tickets when the go-on sale Friday, December 10th at 10am local time here .

One of the most irresistible, refreshing and exciting pop records you'll hear this year, Mercurial World was entirely written, produced, performed, mixed and mastered by Magdalena Bay, and the album has just made its debut on the Billboard charts.

The album took the #1 slot in both Top New Artist Albums and Alternative New Artists, made top 20 in Heatseekers, Current Alternative Albums, Independent Current Albums, and Current Rock Albums, and also charted in Internet Albums, Top Current Albums, Current Album Sales and Album Sales.

Few artists are at once artful and savvy enough to transcend the endless scroll, but over the past 18 months, LA-based indie-pop duo Magdalena Bay have used social platforms to dispatch their music, and what you might call their philosophy, in hypnotic, ephemeral bursts. A long trip through their feeds produces music videos in miniature, irreverent pontifications on the state of the music industry delivered via home video VHS aesthetics, and existential meditations on everything from International Women's Day to the clone craze of the early aughts to the indefinite lifespan of plants. To Mica Tenenbaum and Matt Lewin, reality can be unmade, manipulated beyond all recognition; their project is as much musical as it is an experiment in pop persona and visual aesthetics.

On October 8th, Magdalena Bay released their debut full-length LP, Mercurial World, via Luminelle. Entirely written, produced, recorded, mixed and mastered by the duo, Mercurial World proposes an abstract theory of time and explores the staggering "what ifs" that make up the human experience.

1-2 Day Whale Watching Tours Magdalena Bay

Magdalena bay whale watching.

If you're visiting Baja, we highly recommend making time for one of the most incredible wildlife encounters on Earth, gray whale watching in the sheltered Pacific lagoons along the Baja peninsula.

For those who have time, our best gray whale tour in Baja is our 3 or 4-day  Magdalena Bay whale camp.  However; we realize not everyone has the luxury of time or maybe you've done another exciting adventure and you just want to squeeze a day in to see the gray whales, we don't blame you, they're amazing!

For those looking for a quicker whale watching experience, we offer a full-day tour or a 2-day/1 night visit to our whale camp. On the full-day tour you have one 2-hour whale watching session. On the 2-day tour, there are 2 sessions.  Our camp is located on a barrier island with the Pacific coast on the west side and Magdalena Bay on the east. There is no better-located whale camp in all of Baja.  From your walk-in tent, you can watch the whales swim by!

Seeing the gray whales in Baja is truly one of the pinnacle wildlife experiences in the world. Using the boats of local fishermen, you visit the whales accompanied by one of our naturalist guides who are a font of information about the whales and natural history of the area.  The whales come to Baja each winter to nurse their calves in the first few months of their lives. Thus most of the whales in the bay are mothers with calves.

We always stop our boats at a respectful distance from the whales, giving them comfortable space.  It is up to the whales whether to engage with us or not. Curiously, a certain percentage of the population practices what is known as “friendly” behavior and they are known as the “friendlies.”  These whales will approach whale-watching boats (pangas) of their own free will.  Sometimes a mother will actually nudge her calf towards us.  It’s not uncommon for them to come close enough that we can whisper hello to them.

Gray whales grow to around 40’ and the young calves are generally from 12 to 15’ (4-5 meters) in length.  They spend their summers in arctic waters feeding.  Then in the fall they begin their migration south.  Thousands of whales pass by the coasts of British Columbia, Washington, Oregon and California on their way to Baja.  It is the longest migration of any mammal in the world, covering some 10,000 miles.

Once they arrive in Baja there are three lagoons that they visit to rest and nurse their newborn calves.  Furthest north is Ojo de Liebre (Eye of the Rabbit) where at least half the gray whale births take place.  This lagoon or bay was formerly known as Scammon’s Lagoon, named after Captain Charles Scammon, who was a whaler in the 1800s, but also a keen observer and naturalist.  In fact, his knowledge of gray whales was not surpassed for another hundred years.  He wrote The Marine Mammals of the North-western Coast of North America  which is considered a classic by many.

Moving south the next whale nursery is San Ignacio Lagoon where we also offer our San Ignacio whale watching tour,  We offer this from mid-March to mid-April which is the time when the whales have typically left Magdalena Bay and are moving north.

Further south is Magdalena Bay, the end of the whales’ migration.  Fewer whales come here than the lagoons to the north, but because it is the smallest of the three, the whale watching is superb.  Both our Magdalena Bay whale camp, and San Ignacio whale watching tour combine with our 3-day kayak programs in the Islands of Loreto National Park on what we call our 3x3 tour .

Extend your multi-day trip with a visit to Magdalena Bay on the Pacific Coast of the Baja Peninsula! These are the calving grounds of the gray whale. Here in the shallow waters of the bay, gray whales are becoming world-famous for their "friendly" behavior toward whale watchers. The whales will often bring their calves right up to look back at you! This is one of the world's closest whale encounters.

Your guides provide a short whale watching orientation before you board a local panga for your 2-hour whale watching session. During the whale watching session you are accompanied by a local driver and one of our Naturalists who share with you detailed information about the gray whales of Baja. The Thorough Guide to Magdalena Bay Whales’ Grey Whale Camp

A complete guide to magdalena bay whale camp in baja california sur – the best place in mexico to see grey whales.

Discover everything you need to know about meeting Baja California Sur’s friendly grey whales in Magdalena Bay, Baja California Sur, with the original whale watching company Magdalena Bay Whales . In this thorough guide, we will give you a run down of what to expect at Magdalena Bay Whale Camp, including the accommodation, logistics, facilities, activities, hikes, meals, and of course the whale watching. We have also included details on how to get to Magdalena Bay from La Paz or Loreto with an interactive map, as well as information on when grey whales visit the bay so that you can perfectly plan your trip for grey whale season in 2024. Let’s get started.

Time needed: 2-4 days.

When to go: December-April for grey whale watching, but February-March for the highest numbers of whales.

Weather: Sunshine is common all year round, with temperatures of 16-23°C in (60-73°F) the winter and 21-32°C (69-89°F) in the summer. The bay can be windy and evenings in winter can be especially chilly.

Language: Spanish, but English is widely spoken too.

Currency: Mexican Peso.

Grey Whale Watching in Baja California Sur

Baja California Sur (BCS) is home to several species of whale, making the peninsula a popular filming location for broadcasters like BBC and National Geographic. Whales can be found up and down both of BCS’s coasts – in the Sea of Cortez and the Pacific Ocean. On the west coast of Baja California Sur sit 3 lagoons, which provide sheltered birthing and breeding grounds for grey whales. Here, between the months of December-April, whales can be found in abundance as they migrate from the cooler waters of the Arctic to the warm waters off the Pacific coast of Mexico.

Two grey whales surface together in the waters of Magdalena Bay.

Magdalena Bay Grey Whales

The most accessible lagoon, Magdalena Bay, lies a 3 hour drive from the peninsula’s capital La Paz and a 2 1/2 hour drive from the popular vacation town of Loreto. By far the best and most intimate Magdalena Bay whale watching tour includes staying in the Magdalena Bay Island glamping camp. The owners, Magdalena Bay Whales , are the original Magdalena Bay whale watching tour operator with over 45 years experience operating in the bay. Their camp boasts panoramic views of Magdalena Bay and all the captains are local fisherman who work as guides during whale season. As a small locally-owned company, Magdalena Bay Whales really care for the protection and conservation of grey whales and we’d highly recommend choosing them for your next grey whale watching trip in Baja California Sur.

Interactive Magdalena Bay Map

Hotel isabela, puerto san carlos.

For most people, a trip to Magdalena Island Whale Camp starts at Hotel Isabela . Situated in the small town of Puerto San Carlos, Hotel Isabela is a small but charming hotel with a traditional Mexican style. There’s not much to do in San Carlos, it’s a tiny town full of dogs with not much else, but the hotel’s palapa-style restaurant is a lovely place to relax with a glass of wine or tequila and the food is delicious. The bed is one of the comfiest we’ve ever slept in, so you can get a good night’s sleep before an early morning boat ride to the island (unless you make friends with other visitors who buy you too much tequila for your birthday and therefore stay up far too late, like we did – thanks Greg and Sheila!).

Magdalena Bay Whales have their office located within the hotel so you’ll likely stop here to meet the team before you head out to the island. It is possible to skip the first night in the hotel and head straight to camp. Just mention this in your communication with Magdalena Bay Whales and they’ll tailor your itinerary to suit you.

The Magdalena Bay Whale Camp

Magdalena Bay Whales’ Camp is situated on Isla Magdalena – the outer island of Magdalena Bay, which lies on the Pacific Coast of Baja California Sur. The bay is a popular breeding and birthing spot for grey whales, who come here every year between January-March.

The camp itself is set into the hillside and built around a big palapa-style restaurant, where your all-inclusive meals are served. The restaurant features a fire oven, which is the perfect spot to warm up at night with a hot chocolate, as well as lots of seating areas and traditional Mexican blankets. It’s position at the base of camp gives you the perfect view of the sea for whale and dolphin spotting while you eat. There’s also a bar in the restaurant offering local beers and wines (which can be paid for when back on the mainland) and the toilet block is situated just behind the restaurant too. The WiFi in the palapa is excellent and there are lots of charging ports for all your tech so you can go out on the water every day with full camera batteries.

The Glamping Tents in Magdalena Bay Whale Camp

There are two types of glamping tents, some with wooden decks and some situated right on the beach. Each tent has rocking chairs, a camp shower (bag of water heated by the sun), an emergency toilet and some tents have sun loungers too. One of our favourite things to do in camp was sit on our deck watching whales in the bay. We’d highly recommend getting up early each morning and watching the sunrise from your deck. If you’re lucky you may be greeted with a pod of dolphins or the odd whale too!

Inside the tents you’ll find two double beds, a table with map of Baja California Sur, antibacterial gel and spray and a bin. The beds are kitted out with the fluffiest blankets and are super comfy. The temperatures at Isla Magdalena drop considerably at night but you won’t notice because you’ll be snug as a bug in a rug. If you don’t fancy emerging first thing in the morning, you can unzip the window flap and watch the waves lapping at the shore from the comfort of your bed.

There are two washed up grey whale skeletons in camp which have been reassembled, demonstrating the sheer size of a grey whale. During our visit an osprey couple had chosen one skeleton to be their nest and they had 2 babies, which we enjoyed watching from our deck too. Don’t forget to bring a pair of binoculars and a zoom lens for your camera as these can give you a much better view of the local wildlife!

The Food in Magdalena Bay Whale Camp

All 3 meals a day are served in the restaurant. You’re provided with a menu and order whatever you want to eat – it’s all included in the price of camp! And it’s all delicious so you can be assured you’ll be well fed. We’d recommend getting chilaquiles for breakfast, totopos and ceviche for lunch and fish tacos for dinner. At lunch time, snacks are left out in the buffet area so if you fancy something lighter you can help yourself to totopos, salsa and fresh ceviche. There are plenty of vegetarian and vegan options on the menu too and the staff are nothing but helpful, if you have any specific requests.

A raw prawn dish with onions, cucumbers and a dark chilli sauce.

The Sunsets and Sunrises at Magdalena Bay Whale Camp

Magdalena Bay Whales’ Camp offered us some of the best sunrises we’ve ever seen. This one in particular was like waking up to the sky being on fire! In February the sun rose at about 6:50 and set about 18:30 but you can check the times online. We’d recommend getting up about half an hour before sunrise, sitting out on the deck with some blankets and taking it all in. You could even pop down to the restaurant for a cup of coffee or tea to warm up while you watch the sun appear over the horizon. Sunrise and sunset are also the best times for wildlife watching, as this is when most animals are active, and is the time you’ll most likely see dolphins in the bay. We saw a pod of dolphins from our tent on both of our mornings in camp.

What is there to do in and around Magdalena Bay Whale Camp?

There’s plenty to do in and around camp. There are kayaks and paddleboards for use in the bay, or you can walk up the beach and visit Puerto Magdalena. This little village is only home to around 70 people and all the residents earn an income through fishing in the bay. There’s a little shop (more of a shed with a few products) if you get caught short, bar and restaurant.

You can also explore the sand dunes and mangroves that lie around the bay, many of which are home to some of the 100+ species of birds that call the bay and the surrounding area their home. Your captain will be able to take you out on the boat if you wish to do any of these activities.

Hiking to the Pacific Ocean from Magdalena Bay Whale Camp

We’d also recommend making time to hike to the Pacific Ocean. The trail can be found 5 minutes from camp and is marked with a small sign (pictured below). The hike takes about half an hour each way and follows a dried up river bed. Wear sensible shoes and take lots of water because it’s a little rocky in places and can get very hot. The path is an easy-moderate hike and is uphill on the way there and downhill on the way back.

At the Pacific, you’ll be met with stunning panoramic views. You can take the steep path down to the ocean where you’ll find a little rocky beach. Keep a look out towards the sea as we also spotted a whale swimming past the headland when we were there.

The Magdalena Bay Whale Watching Trips

On each day of camp you get a private whale watching tour. You’ll be assigned a Captain who takes you out into Magdalena Bay to watch the grey whales for about 6 hours at a time. We were there in the peak of the season and there were roughly 60-70 whales in the bay. Due to how still the water was, you could see them blow from miles away. If you’re lucky you’ll also witness behaviours like spy-hopping (bobbing head out of the water), breaching (jumping from the water), tail slapping, fluking (showing tail as the whale dives) and sleeping at the surface. It’s also possible to see other species of whale within Magdalena Bay and around the area where the bay meets the sea. We twice saw humpbacks in Magdalena Bay, including a mother and small calf.

Grey Whale Watching at Magdalena Bay Whale Camp

Baja California Sur is the only place in the world where you can actually touch grey whales, due to their friendly nature and unusually curious behaviour. The grey whales in Magdalena Bay may actually approach boats, seeking human interaction. It’s said that the whales forged a special relationship with the local fisherman, coming to recognise and trust them. The whales became so comfortable that they would come up to the boats and even introduce their young to visitors.

During our visit, we had whales come right up to our boat, swimming underneath the boat, spy-hopping and showing playful behaviour like tail flicking. To experience this you need to find a quiet spot in the bay where the whales feel safe, which is why choosing a licensed company with respectful captains is very important. A wildlife experience built on trust, respect and consent will be better for tourists and whales alike.

The Magdalena Bay Whale Camp Guides

Magdalena Bay Whales’ guides are local fishermen who know the bay like the back if their hand. Our guide spoke great English and was incredibly knowledgeable about the whales and the surrounding area. We learned so much about grey whales and their habits, as well as other wildlife in the bay and its history.

What we appreciated most was our guide’s obvious care for the whales. He would drive slowly towards a spot where a whale had blown, turn off the propeller and use the oar when around a whale, so as not to bombard it with sound. He would never join a group of boats or crowd the whales. We learned he served as the Director of Tourism and Ecology in BCS for 3 years and still regularly attends meetings about protecting the grey whales. When we noticed boats that were unlicensed or displaying unethical practices (like driving too fast or crowding around a whale) he would film and take photos to report back to the government. These reports hopefully put pressure on the government to regulate the bay better, or tighten the restrictions further.

Can you touch Grey Whales in Magdalena Bay?

For unknown reasons, grey whales are some of the friendliest cetaceans on earth. Usually touching animals in the wild is a big no. It can disrupt them, stress them out, transfer harmful bacteria and put you at risk of injury. But the grey whales are an exception (and we researched this endlessly to be extra sure it was ethical). Some grey whales are super curious and will rub against boats, display playful behaviour, pop their heads out of the water and actually enjoy human contact. It’s for this reason that tourists flock from all over the world for the chance to touch and kiss a grey whale in Baja California Sur. Not every whale is like this and you have to wait until an interested whale approaches your boat. There are quite tight regulations within the bay too. Whales are a bit like buses, you wait for a while for one and then three come along at once! There was nothing more exciting than watching a whale slowly make it’s way towards your boat, wondering if it wanted to play.

Are there other animals in Magdalena Bay?

Yes there are lots of other species which you’ll probably see when out on the boat.

As if grey whale watching couldn’t get any better, on our final day we came across this massive pod of common dolphins on our way back to camp. It was difficult to count how many there were, but we think at least 100. We actually tried to take trips out to see common dolphins twice in 2021. Common dolphins can be found off Pembrokeshire and Dartmouth (UK) but both times our boat trip was cancelled due to bad weather. So we count this as third time lucky!

Below is a picture of a Brown Pelican, the smallest of the 8 kinds of pelican. It feeds by diving head first into water and it eats small fish. You can tell this one is a juvenile due to its plain brown colour. As it grows it will develop a white and yellow neck and head as well as red on it’s pouch and beak. The different colours indicate whether the bird is a nonbreeding, pre-breeding or breeding adult. They can be found all over Mexico in coastal areas.

And of course we can’t not mention the cheeky sea lions. They hang around Magdalena Bay in clusters (colonies). They’re very curious creatures and enjoy playing in the wake of a boat. When they are not playing, they are generally lazy and enjoy sunbathing on the surface of the water.

Embracing the volatility and vulnerability of the real world, LA-based indie-pop duo Magdalena Bay create a reality of their own – one that is equally shimmering as it is self aware. The band have used social platforms to dispatch their music, and what you might call their philosophy , in hypnotic, ephemeral bursts. To Mica Tenenbaum and Matt Lewin, reality can be unmade, manipulated beyond all recognition; their project is as much musical as it is an experiment in pop persona and visual aesthetics. In October 2021, Magdalena Bay released their debut full-length LP, Mercurial World , via Luminelle, to critical acclaim. Written, produced, recorded, mixed and mastered by the duo, Mercurial World proposes an abstract theory of time and explores the staggering “what ifs” that make up the human experience. With roots in prog-rock and inspired by bleeding edge producers like Charli XCX and Grimes, the duo creates striking yet self aware soundscapes and visuals that are becoming their true Magdalena-Bay-world signature. With a live show as captivating and dimensional as the music itself, 2022 boasts a sold out North America headline tour, and support dates with the likes of Flume, Porter Robinson and Charli XCX. Approaching actuality as a construct allows Magdalena Bay to enact their own, one that is committed to nothing but expanding the possible.

VERNIER, Switzerland (AP) — Carlos Rodriguez protected his yellow jersey through a rain-soaked final stage Sunday to win the six-day Tour of Romandie for the biggest race victory of his career.

Four previous winners in the French-speaking region of Switzerland went on to win that season’s Tour de France, including Chris Froome in 2013. Rodriguez placed fifth in cycling’s marquee event last year and won a stage.

Rodriguez started Sunday’s flat stage that looped round the suburbs of Geneva — won in a sprint finish by Dorian Godon — with a seven-second lead he took by placing third in a mountain stage Saturday.

The 23-year-old Ineos Grenadiers rider kept that winning margin over runner-up Aleksandr Vlasov, the 2022 Romandie winner. Third-placed Florian Lipowitz was third, trailing Rodriquez by nine seconds.

Godon sealed his second stage win this week, edging Simone Consonni with Dion Smith third.
