Midnight Oil Protest Exxon

Australian rockers Midnight Oil make headlines when they stage a protest concert outside of the Exxon building in New York City in response to the Exxon Valdez oil spill that devastated Prince William Sound in Alaska the year before. Vocalist Peter Garrett says: "We can't treat the world like a garbage dump, and there's more to life than profit and loss."

The company's refusal to accept responsibility for the disaster, which was caused when one of their oil tankers crashed into Bligh Reef and leaked nearly 11 million gallons of crude oil into the ocean and surrounding coastline, outraged the " Beds Are Burning " hitmakers. Armed with a banner that proclaims "Midnight Oil Makes You Dance, Exxon Oil Makes Us Sick," the band pulls up on the back of a flatbed truck and blasts through an eight-song set for the astonished Exxon employees and thousands of passersby during the lunchtime rush. "The day was completely chaotic, even though it had been planned with military precision. It was a guerrilla raid on New York City," the Oils' guitarist and keyboardist Jim Moginie tells Blurt Magazine . "The police wanted to shut it down as we were disrupting traffic. There were heated negotiations between the mayor's office, our record label Sony and the NYPD to keep it open for us." They manage to squeeze in eight songs, including the Blue Sky Mining track "River Runs Red" and a cover of John Lennon's " Instant Karma! " The event makes headlines the next day, with clips of the performance airing on MTV News. Says Moginie: "We played 'Instant Karma' for the first time, which summed up matters pretty well about the oil spill. It felt good to make the point that needed to be made about Exxon. It was only afterwards I realized the event was front page news all around the world. I’m so glad it was filmed and recorded. Everybody heard about it in the mainstream media world so in that sense it put us in front of more people." The concert is included in the documentary Black Rain Falls , with proceeds going to Greenpeace.

It was great to watch Midnight Oil again at the height of their powers in this concert film. Their "guerilla action" performance in front of the Exxon building still hits home today more than 30 years later. It's awesome.

Here's an old review I wrote of Black Rain Falls back in 2013: www.ptsnob.com/2013/06/that-was-rockin-show-marathon-midnight.html

  • On May 30, 1990, Midnight Oil interrupted its North American tour for a "special guerrilla action" on the crowded Avenue of the Americas in midtown Manhattan. The agit prop event was a live concert from the back of a flat-bed truck that eventually drew more than 10,000 people at the high noon hour. The Australian band took this chance to make public its feelings on the planet's crumbling environment "There are things we think are so important that they need to be said." Lead singer Peter Garrett told a packed international press conference after the performance. "and the best way we could say it was with song." Here are the six songs captured live that day: "Progress" (from the 1986 EP, Species Deceases); "Sometimes" and "Dreamworld" (from 1987's Diesel And Dust); Blue Sky Mine" and "River Runs Red" (from Blue Sky Mining); the apropos tribute to John Lennon, "Instant Karma"; and finally, the video clip for Midnight Oil's "King Of The Mountain" (from Blue Sky Mining) available here for the first time. The message is clear and continues to reverberate through the canyon known as Sixth Avenue, the symbol of corporate responsibility for so many of our global problems. "What happened this morning," says Garrett, "was just another of the things that this band has tried to do for the last decade or so. We want to take some of the issues that are in the songs back onto the streets where they belong."

Midnight Oil

“ Midnight Oil : The Hardest Line,” a documentary feature about the veteran Australian rock band Midnight Oil, has been set as the opening gala title at the Sydney Film Festival .

It will have its world premiere at the State Theatre on June 5, kicking off the festival that runs until June 16.

The film is written and directed by Paul Clarke and produced by Carolina Sorensen. It was executive produced by Mikael Borglund, Paul Clarke and Martin Fabinyi.

Popular on Variety

“This documentary not only chronicles the formidable journey of one of Australia’s most influential bands, but also captures the spirit of an era that reshaped our cultural and political landscapes,” said Sydney Film Festival director Nashen Moodley.

“’Midnight Oil: The Hardest Line’ is a film for our time. Observant of Australian politics and culture, and fearless in calling out environmental and racial issues, ‘The Oils’ maintained their relevance for over 40 years by writing and performing music with global resonance. Featuring timeless anthems, we cannot wait for audiences to witness the power and the passion behind the legend that is Midnight Oil,” said Borglund.

“When Australia was creaking under the weight of its own myths, they told us the truth. Their songs pinpoint the fault-lines in our culture, they rage against the strange and dangerous times we’ve lived through, and they offer hope. After following them [as filmmakers] for seven years, we thank ‘The Oils’ and we feel we have an important film to share,” said Clarke.
