Mike & Molly - “Goin’ Fishin’”

What was once a show about blue collar fat people embracing who they are by day and trying to squeeze through doorways by night is now your garden variety marital comedy. The only thing missing is the closing tag where Molly gets on stage and tells an audience about her wacky relatives and future in-laws. Not that Mike & Molly ever had much to say, but the potential was there, and it was capable of some momentary pathos before the closing zinger. It was deep only relative to its far shriller neighbors in the Chuck Lorre-verse—a frozen wasteland where angry people are trapped in suspended animation long past going off the air, if Dharma and Greg are any indication—but at least it had that premise to fall back on, an honest-to-goodness struggle for its characters. Now it seems poised to spend years mired in the deathless dilemmas of lovers who don’t always see exactly eye to eye.

Exhibit A: The Season 2 premiere, “Goin’ Fishin’,” in which Mike & Molly run smack dab into an insurmountable obstacle. Molly wants to start planning their wedding, but Mike wants to go fishing with his buddies this weekend. WHAT ARE THEY GOING TO DO?! “We’ve only been engaged for 24 hours, and she’s trying to fit me for a tux,” he tells a friend. Shockingly, this doesn’t plagiarize Home Improvement yet. It’s not until a drowsy Mike thoughtlessly refers to wedding planning as “nonsense” that Molly gets upset, all to the “No, he di’n’t!” style gawking of the held over Jerry Springer audience. What brings him back into the forgiving arms of his beloved, despite neither of them doing anything all that transgressive? A picture of Molly at yoga practice with a hot trainer (sensei?). Did y’all know that yoga with a partner looks like the kama sutra’s greatest hits? Hilarious! Of course, Dim Husband and Always Correct Wife is a conceit that anchors Emmy’s Best Comedy for two years running, so maybe this show is doing the smart thing after all.

Speaking of Emmys, it’s not hard to see why Melissa McCarthy won for Best Lead Actress in a Comedy (although last year the award went to Edie Falco for managing to make it through Nurse Jackie without her eyes rolling out of her head, so logic may not be warranted). Whereas Amy Poehler, say, is a stellar part of a stellar ensemble, Mike & Molly has one three-dimensional character playing opposite cartoons. Next to her party girl sister or her boozy broad mother or the Senegalese waiter who once spent time in the gay tent of a refugee camp (to give you a sense of how far this show will walk for a joke), McCarthy absolutely shines. Even Mike is stuck playing dim and dry all the time. Molly gets to be dry when she’s trying to make a point, momentarily serious in conversations with her fiance, and as bawdy as the next CBS gal, which considering 2 Broke Girls and The Good Wife is saying a lot.

Unfortunately, Molly is not nearly enough to keep this sitcom afloat—and speaking of floating and fat jokes, Mike singleassedly sinks a boat in this episode, just so new viewers know what they’re getting into. Which could be funny, but the show tries to walk some sort of line between having a good laugh about its characters’ insecurities and political correctness, which isn’t a line but a negative space of maximum awkwardness. It’s like Leslie Knope making a Jerry joke and then pretending like that’s the last one, unless somebody has a really good one. It’s not a point of view; it’s the anything-for-a-laugh mantra that runs the Lorre-verse.

Laughs wouldn’t be such a bad thing, though, considering how empty the show’s become. Here we’re subjected to a dash of “women are like this and men are like this” and a pinch of “that is such a Joyce thing to do.” Since Mike and Molly give lip service to their diet, it’s possible that the writers intend to continue exploring their identity issues (by which I mean Mike wanting to lose weight and Molly wanting to accept who she is) or even ground them in a real economy (he being a cop and she being a teacher). But as a taste of things to come, “Goin’ Fishin’” makes Mike & Molly looks a lot more like reheated sitcoms that weren’t funny the first time than a unique, resonant spin on classic tropes.

Stray observations:

• It’s nice to see a show, especially one produced by Chuck Lorre, where family members actually love and support one another.
• My fifth grade teacher was Mrs. Biggs. I don't blame Molly for sticking with Flynn.
• McCarthy's subdued take on "…You sunk a boat?" saves the entire bit. It is a fat joke, but she's so gentle with it that Mike doesn't feel like the butt of it.

Ep 1. Goin' Fishin'

Mike & Molly season 2 episode 1, titled "Goin' Fishin'," is a hilarious journey that takes viewers on a fishing trip with Mike and Carl. The episode begins with Mike and Carl, both police officers, talking about their plans for the weekend and realizing they have nothing to do. With the help of Mike's mother, they decide to go fishing.

Despite both men knowing nothing about fishing, they head to the bait shop to get supplies. They end up purchasing way too much gear and bait, including a live octopus, which they put in the cooler along with their sandwiches. They then set out on their fishing adventure, but things take a hilarious turn when the octopus escapes.

Meanwhile, Molly is at home with her younger sister, Victoria, who is going through a rough time after breaking up with her fiancé. Molly is trying to cheer her up but is struggling as her own insecurities about her weight come to the forefront.

Back on the fishing trip, Mike and Carl are struggling to catch anything until they come across a mysterious man who shows them the secret of catching fish. The man, played by guest star William Sanderson, is hilarious and adds to the already humorous episode.

As the day wears on, Carl becomes increasingly uncomfortable and realizes he is severely allergic to one of the baits they are using. Mike, trying to help his friend, gives him an EpiPen, but it doesn't work and they have to race back to shore to get medical attention.

Once they get back to shore, they meet up with another group of fishermen who give them advice on how to catch a fish. They use the advice and finally catch a fish, but what they do with it is unexpected and hilarious.

Back at home, Molly is still trying to help Victoria but is not having much luck. She finally realizes that the best way to help her sister is to be there for her and just listen. The heartwarming scene between the sisters is a nice break from the humor of the fishing trip.

In the end, Mike and Carl return home with their catch and try to figure out what to do with it. Molly and Victoria come up with the perfect solution, which leads to a heartwarming ending.

Overall, "Goin' Fishin'" is a hilarious episode that showcases the chemistry between the characters while also dealing with issues of insecurity and sisterly love. It's a great way to kick off season two of Mike & Molly.

Summary [ ]

Mike, Carl, Samuel, Vince and Harry are preparing for their annual "guys weekend" fishing trip, when Carl irritates the group by announcing he has invited Victoria. This causes Mike to feel like he has to invite Molly, and Vince follows suit by inviting Joyce. As they get ready to leave, Victoria tells Molly she has cheated on Carl with an old boyfriend, leading to an awkward drive to the fishing site as Molly hides what she knows from Mike.

Molly Qerim thinks Caitlin Clark is ‘lucky’ to face injury-riddled UConn

Molly Qerim turned some heads Thursday when the ESPN “First Take” host brought a hot take to the program. 

Qerim, a graduate of UConn, questioned whether the hype around Caitlin Clark would be as much as it has been if Huskies star Paige Bueckers hadn’t dealt with so many injuries .

And she added that Iowa was “lucky” that UConn is dealing with so many injuries headed into Friday’s Final Four matchup.

The comment drew the ire of Stephen A. Smith, who isn’t one to miss an opportunity to give a hot take or two on the ESPN show. 

“All I gotta say is she’s lucky this UConn team isn’t healthy, and that’s a true statement,” Qerim said in a clip of the show that made its way around X. 

As the discussion continued, the proud UConn alumna took another shot at her alma mater’s upcoming opponent. 

“If Paige Bueckers didn’t basically miss two seasons, I don’t know if we’d be talking about Caitlin Clark the way we are right now. That’s facts, Stephen A.,” she said. 

It’s hard to argue that Bueckers’ injury issues have impacted her, but she has turned right back into a star this season, and she has been one of the central figures of the NCAA Tournament this year. 

UConn has dealt with a few injuries this season, including season-ending ones to Azzi Fudd and Aubrey Griffin. 

But Clark’s historic 2023-24 season and run in the NCAA Tournament has helped elevate women’s basketball to heights never seen before. 

Qerim’s take wasn’t very well received on social media, and one user on X wrote , “This is some generational hating right here. Shame on Molly.” 

The showdown between UConn and Iowa will take place on Friday night at 9:30 p.m. Eastern, with the winner advancing to the national title game to face the winner of the South Carolina-NC State battle.
