Customer Reviews

Previous feedback  .

Comments: This motor itself is great, however the bracket is absolute trash on it. Had mine on for three trips before the latch failed and motor deployed while running across the lake. Lake was rough but nothing I haven't handled before. Contacted Motorguide about warranty replacing my now destroyed motor and their response was "If you knew what you were doing it wouldn't have happened. Also I did have the strap on it as well. Motorguide used to be the best out there but now I would rather replace boards on an ultrex every few months instead

From: Dustin : Oklahoma 5/12/23

Comments: After buying a Ultrex and fighting it non stop, selling it to get a force which is a pile of junk that stays messed up I have to say getting the tour pro was the best decision ever. spot lock is the most accurate I've used, no more jerky motion like the force, quiet and just hands down the best motor that is a true cable steer system that you dont have to call customer service on daily like the force and Ultrex.

From: Adam: 4/19/21

Comments:  I have a 2015 ranger Z118. MotorGuide tour pro fit no problem. Pedal works really smooth and plenty of power with the 82 trust 45 shaft. I have had the old M.G. brute on one of my older bass boat and the old M.G. tour on my 2015 Ranger and I like them but my new tour pro works so grate. Awesome job MotorGuide grate motor.   From: Unknown: 2/6/21

Comments:  Bad buy if you own a Phoenix. I order one and finally got one. Call tech support had a question regarding assembly. The tech had no idea what I was talking about, because he didn't have a book on the tour pro. After assembly, prepared to drill mounting bolt holes in my Phoenix, turned out the tm sets on the shroud. An 1.5" difference.  TM needed to be raised 1.5.  The bounce buster being in the center of the bracket will rest on the hull. Contacted Motor Guide support again, they had no idea the bracket would not work on a Phoenix bass boat. Contacted Phoenix techs, they said it wouldn't fit. Motor Guide suggested that Phoenix needs to change their shroud. Really!! I've had motor guide for 30+ years, they have really gone downhill. Bad design! From: Robert: Texas 1/24/21

The MotorGuide Tour Series is back! The NEW Tour Series is MotorGuide's latest and most advanced cable-steer motor. It's a huge leap forward for anglers who still demand the reliability and responsiveness of MotorGuide's pure cable-steer trolling motors.

Recommended for:

Medium sized, freshwater bass boats, pontoons and general fishing boats. The 82 lbs thrust motor is recommended for boats weighing up to 3,500lbs. For more help picking the right thrust level - or to learn how much your boat weighs - please refer to our thrust guide .

How It's Unique

The new Tour series motors are a step-up from the MotorGuide wireless Xi Series as well as the cable-steer X5 and X3 motors. The TOUR Pro is available with thrust options of 82 and 109 lbs.

Water Type:

Freshwater Only

Shaft Length(s):

Tour models are available in a shaft length of 45". To make sure that 45" is enough for your boat please see our shaft guide .

  • HD+ Integrated Sonar

Mounting Details:

The Tour model includes a 360º breakaway mount which protects to shaft from breaking when hitting a stump or rock. The motor is bolted directly to the bow of the boat using the included mounting hardware, and requires drilling into the boat for installation. However, if accessing the underside is impossible you can use no access bolts to secure the motor from the top. For more information see our compatibility and mounting guides.

i-Pilot is like magic. Like a magician in a black cape standing next to me in my boat sprinkling pixie dust and saying, “Abracadabra! More fish!” Thanks TrollingMotors.net for making this magical purchase so easy and fun. You guys are the best. Phil in Arcadia, FL

Why buy from Bass Pro or Cabelas when you can buy from these guys? From start to finish this was one of the best, if not the best, online shopping experiences I’ve ever had. The owner answered all my questions, the prices were great, and the motor arrived in two days. Don’t buy anywhere else. Jason in Lake Charles, TX

"The personal service provided was fantastic. They responded very quickly to my emails and phone calls. The order was delivered faster than expected. I will definitely (and already have) told others that this is the only place to go for trolling motors.” Alan in Metairie, LA

"My $1,700 Terrova 80 i-Pilot purchase was a big investment so I was a little nervous ordering my motor online, but I'm sure glad I chose TrollingMotors.net! Not only did they have the motor I was looking for, but I also saved a lot of money. Oh, and the motor arrived the next day. Keep up the great work, guys!” David in Okeechobee, FL

Helpful Tips: Choosing the right trolling motor for you

Fishermen aren't just different from the rest of the world. They're different from each other. That's why MotorGuide offers trolling motors for a wide range of fishermen, boats and fishing styles. Learn about some of the most essential factors to consider when choosing a trolling motor such as power, shaft length, and steering.

Motorguide, X3, Trolling Motor

Pound Thrust

Power is a specific metric that you require for a trolling motor. A general guideline to determine the right pound thrust is 2 lbs. thrust for every 100 lbs. of total weight (boat, fuel, occupants, gear, etc.). Also, if you frequently fish in strong currents or windy conditions, add 10 lbs. thrust.

Motorguide, X3, Trolling Motor

Shaft Length

The trolling motor's shaft length is a specific measurement that varies across boats. Measure from the top of the bow where the motor is mounted to the waterline. Then add 20 inches to this measurement. Your ideal shaft length should be at least as long as the combined sum.

Motorguide, X3, Trolling Motor

The final factor that can influence your trolling motor of choice is the steering type. This is usually driven by your preference (and your budget), so choose wisely! Some options include hand-control, foot-controlled cable steer, electric (remote) control, and premium traditional cable steer.

MotorGuide Tour Pro: Common Problems & Fixes

  • Post author: Tom
  • Post last modified: November 1, 2022

The Tour Pro was released in January 2020 and it is arguably one of the best motors on the market today.

However, there have been reports of problems with its Pinpoint GPS, resulting in a recall, as well as other issues with latching and transducer interference.

In this article, we discuss the most common problems associated with the Tour Pro.

Let’s get started!

Table of Contents

Spot-Lock Problems

The most common issue is when a Tour Pro can’t get a GPS signal. It is very annoying, as your MotorGuide’s spot lock (GPS anchor) won’t work without it.

Interestingly, the problem is not apparent at first, when PinPoint GPS works fine but stops working after some time on the water.

One possible explanation is voltage drop. According to MotorGuide, PinPoint GPS is very voltage-sensitive.

So the very first thing that should be done is to check the voltage, and possibly have the batteries load tested to rule out voltage drop as the source of the problem.

Tour Pro Recall

A far more serious problem when spot lock becomes unpredictable, turning back and forth and engaging at full power. It could potentially throw unexpecting people off the boat.

This behavior is due to a faulty PinPoint GPS system and is the reason why MotorGuide announced a recall .

MotorGuide tells you not to use anchor mode on the Tour Pro and to have the motor inspected by a dealer.

MotorGuide is still working on the fix, and when it’s available, it will be at no cost to owners.

Heading Data Problem

This issue can occur when you have your Tour Pro connected to a fish finder via the NMEA network.

What happens is that you can’t get accurate heading data from a networked Point 1. When you add your trolling motor node to the network, the Point 1 antenna data shows as “invalid”.

The problem happens with Lowrance fish finders and is most likely an interface compatibility issue.

Transducer Interference

Some users find it really hard to eliminate radio frequency interference when using the internal transducer on the Tour Pro.

No matter how far they would move wires away from the trolling motor, interference wouldn’t get any better.

Even ferrite added to each cable wouldn’t solve the problem.

Latching Problem

Sometimes the Tour Pro latches so well, that is almost impossible to pull it up . You may have to pull it very hard several times before it unlatches.

One solution could be to press down gently with your foot on the bracket, although it doesn’t always work.

The issue is most likely caused by uneven torque on the mounting bolts , so try to correct that first.

If that doesn’t work, you can also spray the locking mechanism with lithium grease. More specifically, spray the locking pin and move it back and forth afterward.

Design Issues

The motor is not brushless . It’s true there many trolling motors out there still using the old brushed technology. However, most of these have been designed years ago, and for such a new product as the Tour Pro, we would expect MotorGuide to introduce a brushless DC motor.

It would then be in the good company of Lowrance Ghost and Garmin Force, both excellent trolling motors.

Brushless means more efficiency, less maintenance (no brushes to replace), less noise, and transducer interference.

Lift-assist works fine when you want to deploy your motor. However, it doesn’t prevent a hard landing when you want to stow it.

Speed lock is adjustable only down to 1 mph . Anything slower than that means you need to adjust the speed manually. This is unfortunate, as some species require trolling at slower speeds.

Sticky Steering . On some units, the foot pedal felt stiff after disengaging anchor mode.

Frequent Compass Calibration

According to MotorGuide, you need to calibrate your compass every time you go to a location that is 100 miles away from your previous calibration.

Frequent calibration is inconvenient , especially if you tend to go to different lakes.

Of course, chances are your trolling motor will still work, but the compass could be inaccurate.

Warranty Problems

Unfortunately, the recall left some users without the ability to fish and with no chance to have the motor fixed anytime soon.

Apparently, the motherboard on the control unit needs replacing, but as for now, there seems to be no replacement available.

We can only speculate why, one reason could be a global shortage of chips.

It’s a shame really, as otherwise, MotorGuide provides an excellent warranty service.

GPS Reprogramming Steps

According to MotorGuide customer service, some trolling motors left the factory not completely programmed.

They provide codes and actions needed to perform on the water in the following order:

GPS steering program

Remote code M [hold] 284. The motor and the foot pedal will move in different directions. There will be a beep once finished.

GPS foot pedal travel program

Remote code M [hold] 285. Again, the trolling motor and the foot pedal will keep moving during the process, which will finish with a beep.

Compass calibration program

Remote code M [hold] 111. Drive your boat with the outboard, making two full circles. The calibration process will end with a beep.

PinPoint GPS program

Remote code M [hold] 112.
