About Speedy Route

Speedy Route calculates the best route when visiting multiple locations and then returning back to the start. It is ideal for delivery drivers, sales people on the road, or anyone who needs to make multiple stops. Speedy Route re-orders the locations you enter into the best optimal order, so that every location is visited once before returning to your start location in the shortest and quickest way possible.

Speedy Route is available in the United States and also world-wide, e.g. in the United Kingdom and the rest of Europe, as well as in Canada, Australia and New Zealand, the Far East, South America, and the rest of the World. Find the best route with Speedy Route.

Single or Multiple Delivery Vehicles

Speedy Route can plan your route for a single vehicle or multiple delivery vehicles, and will produce the optimal route for the number of delivery vehicles you have available. If you set the number of available delivery vehicles to be more than one, the calculated route may use any number of vehicles up the maximum available. The calculated route might not use all the vehicles available if the optimal route can be achieved using fewer vehicles.

Calculating the optimal route is an example of the Travelling Salesman Problem solved by Route planning software, in which given a list of places to visit, and after having calculated the time to travel between each place, the optimal route is that which visits every location exactly once before returning to the start location by the fastest route.

Speedy Route is a charged subscription service for the calculation of routes containing more than 10 locations, and also for more than three calculations within a rolling 24 hour period for routes containing any number of locations. Subscription periods are activated immediately upon purchase, and are available on a monthly rolling basis. We only accept payments in U.S. Dollar ($).

$69/mo: Up to 5 drivers, 500 stops per route $99/mo: Up to 10 drivers, unlimited stops per route

Speedy Route attempts to solve optimal route calculation requests as a 'best-effort' service. The time elapsed required to calculate a result is dependent on many factors, including route complexity, server load, internet connectivity, and the presence and performance of other consumed down-stream services. Some routes may not be solvable within a reasonable amount of time, and therefore may not be solvable by Speedy Route. The maximum number of locations in a route that Speedy Route will attempt to calculate is 500 (five hundred) locations, although we may increase this limit in the future.

We monitor our systems to maintain the performance and reliability of Speedy Route. All users of Speedy Route (both paid subscription and free users) agree to be abide by our 'Fair Use' policy. Users shall not maliciously attempt 'Denial-of-service' style attacks on Speedy Route, or repeatedly use the service to calculate the same route with no good reason. Users shall also not attempt to circumvent security features. Any user found to be in breach of these policies may have their registration and subscription with Speedy Route cancelled, and be blocked from using the service in the future.

A subscription may not be used from more than 5 different client IP Addresses over a rolling 24 hour period.

Registered email addresses provided to Speedy Route as part of the registration process are not sold or passed on to third parties. We will only ever use your email address to contact you regarding the Speedy Route service, and your supplying an email address to us confirms your acceptance of this. Please contact us if you wish us to delete your account.

Free Service

Speedy Route is currently a free web service when calculating routes containing 10 or fewer locations, but we reserve the right to withdraw or change the functionality, parameters, or availability of the free service in the future without notice. Only three free route calculations per client IP Address over a rolling 24 hour period are permitted. To calculate more than three routes from the same IP Address within 24 hours, you must purchase a subscription.

The multi route planner details:

  • Stop sequences
  • Drive, arrival, and departure times

These details are electronically transmitted to each driver’s mobile device.

Then as each drop route is executed, a real-time GPS-based signal updates the multi drop delivery schedule in real time, recalculating delivery ETAs and notifying planner/dispatchers if route plans are deviated from or a delivery is at risk of being missed.

Equally, planners/dispatchers can easily update drivers on any customer changes or new orders/collections. All of this activity is viewed through an intuitive, graphically based user interface.

Each driver utilises a GPS-based mobile application, easily loaded on to any smartphone. While providing route directions to the driver the app will also help to ensure that routes are executed to plan and any exceptions to the route are communicated immediately back to planners.

Customers like to be kept informed.

Not only will continual communication with customers help to ensure a successful delivery and minimise failed deliveries where the recipient needs to be present, but the multi drop route planner software will help ensure that delivery vehicles stick to and achieve the intended delivery sequence and time originally supplied to the consumer.

However, issues outside of your control can work to prevent schedules from being met and timely information via the multi drop route planner software enables updates of expected arrival times for deliveries to be sent to the consumer to proactively manage expectations.

Drivers can acquire proof of delivery details via a mobile app, signatures and/or images for access later, either by route planners, customer services or the customer. This eliminates traditional paper-based processes and reduces the associated overheads such as paper, ink and printers.

Descrates' proof of delivery system will reduce customer enquiries for proof of delivery documentation and the associated administration work by up to 80%.

Feedback from our clients

Rob Barr

Track-POD is an easy-flowing system that’s not difficult for drivers. It dropped us from an average of 24 minutes per delivery down to 17 minutes per delivery, which is a huge saving when you have 100+ drivers. The difference between then and now is that we have the flexibility to adjust on the fly.

Ian Nolan

Track-POD is one of the only all-in-one software options with good auto route planning, e-signatures, and live tracking. Versatility, ease of use for new staff, adaptable to our system. Drivers picked up the use quickly, even older, less tech-savvy team. The geolocations and photos/signatures are excellent PODs.

Stephanie Chupp

Because Track-POD is so easy to use, as the driver drives with it, they get extremely consistent and fast. I love that with Track-POD there is a way to make it very easy and just say: we have this many vehicles – go for it and create our routes.

Catherine Powell

Customers know exactly when they’re getting their deliveries and they’re able to track the vans’ progress through Track-POD – this has been a massive asset in building trust. No one struggled with Track-POD for more than a few days – it’s really easy to use for everyone.

best fleet routing software

Frequently Asked Questions

What is route optimization software.

Route optimization solution is finding the best routes that pack the most orders and require minimum drivers' working time throughout the day with reducing mileage. Driving route optimization businesses use delivery route optimizers with intelligent algorithms. The best route optimization algorithm helps enterprises maximize their fleet and driver resources to do more jobs with less time and miles.

Can Google Maps do route planning?

Yes, Google Maps is the best free route planner app for personal use. However, if you're managing a business with a varied fleet and cargo to transport, you need advanced route planning software. This is because it is built to consider all of the variables and build smart and efficient routes for commercial transportation.

Google maps route optimization offers the most efficient route from point A to point B based on current conditions and can only include 24 drops. An advanced route optimization app helps you optimize more than 24 stops accounting for customers' preferred time windows, customer priorities, and driver breaks. The best route optimizers consider vehicle restrictions, service time, cargo, and driver parameters, as well as road and other restrictions to build the fastest, cheapest, and safest route.

Track-POD combines all order, fleet, GPS, and driver data, as well as customers' preferred time windows, to create the fastest, safest, and cheapest routes possible. What would otherwise take hours of planning can be done in seconds. The best routing software is one that’s as easy to use as Google Maps but built for growing your business.

What are the benefits of delivery route planning?

To plan a route manually, you need a map of your service area as well as insider knowledge. Your vehicles, cargo specifications, road traffic, drivers' availability, customers' preferred time windows, and any other constraints need to be taken into account.

Another way to go about it is to automate the whole process. For this, you can use free delivery planning software. With a tool like that, you can build routes considering all of your business and customer preferences to minimize your costs and maximize efficiency. The best part is that all the heavy lifting happens in the background while you're focused on growing your business.

Track-POD advanced routing planning software helps you utilize trucks more effectively, delivering profitable route strategies for your staff. As a result, you can reduce the total number of vehicles and miles driven. By optimizing truck routes, you do more in less time, boost the productivity of your operations and give your customers on-time delivery every time. Best practices show that you grow the percentage of   on-time deliveries up to 99% , increase   profits by 25%   through efficient routes and repeat orders from   happy customers .

What is the best way to plan a route with multiple stops?

Building a route with multiple stops requires in-depth knowledge of your resources (vehicle, driver, etc.) and service area as well as designated software. While you can plan personal trips manually, commercial vehicle routing calls for more advanced solutions.

The best way to plan a route with multiple stops is by using a planner like Track-POD or similar logistics tech solutions. Not all software is created equal, so you need to make a choice with the best results for your business needs. To keep your shipping costs low, make sure you find a tool that offers multi-stop routes with the option to consider different vehicles and assign priority to orders.

How does dynamic route optimization work?

Track-POD smart, dynamic route optimization calculates and postpones the start time of your driver to meet the first customer time slot, thereby reducing operational downtime. Additionally, Track-POD software adjusts your accurate ETA if your drivers are delayed. Providing accurate ETA helps the customers to receive the deliveries on time, improving customer satisfaction levels and minimizing the costs of re-deliveries.

Does route optimization software provide GPS?

Comprehensive route optimization solution includes GPS tracking to offer Live ETA for your customers. That helps predict when your vehicles will be at customer locations, providing an estimated distance with time. GPS with delivery route optimization saves fuel costs, increases your profits, provides better ETAs, and makes the best customer service. The most important thing is that the Track-POD does not require any special equipment for installing GPS and additional costs. It just uses mobile devices (Android and iPhone iOS).

How much does route planning cost?

Track-POD route scheduling solution is a part of the Advanced Plus plan that also includes real-time vehicle tracking, dynamic ETA for the customer, geofencing, and PDF reports. The Advanced+ plan comes at $69/mo per vehicle if you choose to pay annually. Alternatively, you can choose to pay per number of orders a month, which is a go-to option for larger operations. You can also experience Track-POD route management software free of charge during a live demo.

11 Best Free Route Planners with Unlimited Stops in 2024

11 Best Free Route Planners with Unlimited Stops

From delivery services to GPS to fitness trackers, technology is transforming how we live. This shift is vital for businesses, especially in e-commerce and retail, where fast and efficient deliveries are key.  Studie s show over 90% of consumers expect 2-3 day delivery, with some wanting it same-day. But faster deliveries come at a cost: and with a record $2.3 trillion in spend in 2023, US logistics costs have hit an all-time high .

The answer? Route optimization! By planning the most efficient routes, businesses can save money and be more sustainable. Luckily, there are several free route planning tools available. Keep reading to discover the 11 best free options for your business.

1. Here WeGo – Alternative to Google Maps with Unlimited Stops

Here We Go Route

HERE WeGo is a free route planner and navigation app that offers a variety of features designed to make travel easier and more convenient.

One of the most useful features of HERE WeGo is its ability to download maps for offline use. This is especially helpful when traveling in areas with limited internet connectivity. Users can download entire cities or regions, and the app will continue to provide directions and other features even without an internet connection.

In 2023, HereWeGo unveiled a fresh new design, emphasizing clearer navigation and ease of use, with features like simple walking directions, public transit information for over 1,900 cities, and turn-by-turn voice guidance for driving, enhancing the overall user experience. Last year’s new features and functionalities included:

  • A customizable map view empowering users to tailor their maps by displaying traffic, city, and topographic features according to their preferences.
  • A new functionality allowed users to toggle the display of a progress bar, providing a comprehensive overview of traffic, stops, estimated travel time, and arrival time.
  • A convenient hotel booking feature, allowing users to book accommodations directly through the app via Booking.com partnership, streamlining the booking process.
  • Highway rest stop amenities enabled drivers to locate available facilities along their route, particularly beneficial for electric vehicle drivers seeking charging points.

In 2024, HereWeGo is adding a number of improvements and new features to the platform:

  • Intermodal Journey Planning: The app now includes intermodal journey planning, enabling users to view the total travel time by car, including walking to the vehicle and from the parking spot to the final destination. The app also remembers the parking location to provide an accurate estimated time of arrival.
  • Offline Map Downloads: Users now have the option to download maps for offline navigation of entire regions, countries, or continents. This feature ensures reliable routing even without an internet connection, making it ideal for travel to avoid data roaming charges.
  • New Road Signs Indication: Finally coming out of beta, this feature tells users about important road signs as they approach, so they can see road sign icons with remaining distance indicated on the screen.
  • Future Transportation Modes and On-the-Go Services : HERE WeGo plans to introduce more transportation modes such as biking and car-sharing in the near future, along with additional on-the-go services like parking.
  • A web version of the app featuring 3D maps is also expected to launch in 2024.

Here WeGo offers turn-by-turn navigation with voice guidance, making it easy to follow directions while driving, cycling, or walking. It includes pretty accurate traffic information, though it lacks the ability to actively modify an assigned route when the app detects that there is congestion on the way.

Because of this and the limited options it offers for route optimization, users may need to manually adjust their route to achieve the most efficient path.

  • Unlimited stops
  • Download maps for offline use
  • Detailed public transit options, including bus and train schedules
  • Real-time traffic updates
  • Customizable route options
  • Safety features, including speed limit warnings, lane guidance, and alerts for sharp turns and railroad crossings
  • Limited voice guidance
  • Incomplete point of interest database
  • Slow loading times
  • Limited route optimization options

Is This Tool Right for You?

It’s a solid alternative to Google Maps, particularly for users who prioritize privacy and need unlimited stops.

Available on: PC, Mac, iOS, Android

  • Optimizes your stops for a more efficient route

3. google maps – best for simple routes.

Google Maps Route Planner

By far, the most common route planner app is Google Maps. Virtually everyone uses this tool to get from one place to another, but not many are aware that it’s capable of planning routes with multiple stops.

Google Maps advertises that they’re able to plan routes with up to ten spots. However, there’s a trick you can use to create routes with up to 25 stops. Google Maps’ user-friendly interface and familiarity make it an excellent choice for a wide range of businesses.

Google is so revolutionary when mapping that many other providers have built their tools using Google’s API. So, it’s clear the company is doing something right when it comes to its mapping tool.

In 2023, Google Maps added a few new features driven by AI integrations, including Immersive View, which can help users plan their trips ahead of time whether driving, walking, or cycling. Immersive view gives users visual turn-by-turn directions and can help avoid getting stuck in congestion thanks to simulated traffic and weather conditions.

At CES 2024, they also announced a new battery notifications feature for EV vehicles directly in Google Maps. This new integration will make life much easier for EV drivers using Android Auto. It will allow them to see estimated battery levels upon arrival at their destination and even flag charging stops along the way. Other improvements and new features for 2024 include:

  • New default map style: A fresh map style with an updated color palette and enhanced usability. Starting March 21, 2024, apps using map IDs can preview and opt-in to the new style, which will become the default on March 18, 2025.
  • Redesigned interfaces: Key interfaces, including the directions search experience, have been revamped to reduce clutter and bring important elements within easier reach.
  • Precise business entrances: In the near future, Google Maps will show precisely where the main entrances to businesses and points of interest are located, improving user navigation.
  • Glanceable Directions feature: This feature displays real-time navigation info on the lock screen, allowing users to track their journey without constantly unlocking their phone.
  • AI-powered features: AI-powered features such as dish identification in restaurant photos, menu information, and a cleaner interface design.
  • Enhanced recommendations : Google Maps will include recommendation lists curated by publishers like Lonely Planet and The New York Times, as well as algorithmically generated lists of trending and popular places.

The biggest downside of Google Maps is you can’t optimize the order of your stops. Google will calculate your route in the order you enter your stops. For a truly optimized route, you’ll need to list your stops in the most efficient order, which isn’t always easy to figure out.

  • User-friendly
  • Most people already know how to use it
  • Google Street View helps you see what your destinations look like
  • Industry-leading technology
  • Can only add 10 stops (25 with a workaround)
  • You can’t optimize the order of your stops.

Great general-purpose tool for anyone needing basic navigation with traffic updates (good for personal errands or deliveries with few stops).

Available on: PC, Mac, iOS, Android 3. Waze – Best for Personal Trips

4. Waze – Best for Personal Trips

If you’re looking for an app with excellent directions and a great user experience, it’s hard to beat Waze. The company was purchased by Google back in 2013, so you might expect it to be reasonably similar to the Maps app. However, Waze offers some innovative features that truly make it unique.

What sets Waze apart is that it collects real-time data from other users. This allows it to provide you with live traffic updates, adjusted routes, and shortcuts. The app also integrates with Spotify, which lets you receive directions while listening to music.

While Waze’s community feature is a nice perk, it’s only effective on routes that other users are traveling. If you’re in a more remote area, you won’t have access to the same amount of real-time data.  And if you are on a route with many other users, the number of icons on the screen can block your directions.

Last year, Waze was expected to launch quite a few new features in the near future, including warnings regarding roads with an increased likelihood of accidents, support for Android Auto Coolwalk, and additional toll road controls. In November 2023, Crash History Alerts was indeed launched as its newest safety feature, notifying users of crash-prone roads along their trips.

However, Google–Waze’s parent company–has continued to consolidate the app into its own mapping products and users have noticed that throughout 2023 Waze actually removed some core functionalities, especially across iOS devices. New features and functionalities launching in 2024 include:

  • Enhanced user safety features : A host of six new features that improve user safety and convenience during navigation. They include assistance navigating roundabouts, alerts for upcoming speed limit changes, warnings about road hazards like speed bumps and sharp turns, and integration with Flash to provide detailed parking information and reservations.
  • Route insights: Waze now offers users helpful information about their favorite routes, including live traffic updates and delays. This enables users to compare their usual routes with alternatives and select which option they prefer.
  • First responder alerts: In an effort to prioritize the safety of first responders, Waze notifies drivers when an ambulance or fire truck is stopped along their route. This feature is currently available in the US, Canada, Mexico, and France, with more countries expected soon.
  • Redesigned reporting feature: Waze has revamped its reporting feature on both Android and iOS platforms to enhance usability. However, certain options, such as reporting roadkill, were removed in the process.

The biggest downside of Waze is that you can’t add multiple stops to your route. However, its great directions and fun interface still make it worthy of being included on this list. You can always use it in conjunction with another logistics tool for routes with more than one stop.

  • Makes directions fun
  • Real-time updates via community data
  • Integrates with Spotify
  • Add friends and share directions
  • You can only add 1 stop in addition to your final destination
  • Lacks data in more remote areas
  • Includes ads that can be distracting

Ideal for drivers who want real-time traffic updates and crowd-sourced navigation (especially good for deliveries in congested areas).

5. Apple Maps – Best for Apple Users

Not to be outdone by Google, Apple came out with its own mapping app included on all iOS devices. It offers many of the same features as Google Maps but does lag behind in a few areas.

Where it excels is its map design. The maps look great, and they include a 3D view and buildings. Apple users will also appreciate that maps and directions are synced between all Apple devices. So, you can instantly move directions from your iPad to your iPhone.

With the iOS 17 update, Apple Maps added Offline Maps, allowing users to download maps for use when a Wi-Fi or cellular signal is not available, and EV routing improvements, including “the ability to select a preferred charging network when getting directions for your electric vehicle”. And for all outdoors enthusiasts, Apple Maps has also added thousands of park trails across the U.S. “with place cards that include detailed information like trail length and type, difficulty, and elevation gain”.

New product features and updates specific to Apple Maps in 2024 include:

  • Custom Routes: Expected with iOS 18 in September 2024, this new feature will allow users to pick specific roads for their routes.
  • Topographic Maps on Multiple Platforms : Originally introduced on the Apple Watch in watchOS 10, topographic maps will become available on the iPhone, Mac, and Vision Pro. These maps offer detailed information crucial for hiking and outdoor activities, including trails, contour lines, elevation data, and points of interest. Anticipated for release with iOS 18, macOS 15, and visionOS 2 in 2024.
  • User Reporting : Though limited compared to Waze as of early 2024, Apple Maps now includes user reporting for accidents and hazards, with potential for expansion.
  • Expansion of Mapping Efforts : Apple is continuing vehicle-based data collection in countries like Malaysia, aiming to enhance its map database and introduce features like Look Around.

The biggest downfall of Apple maps is that it only allows you to add two stops. So, busy delivery drivers likely won’t be able to get much use out of this tool. Users have also complained about inaccurate information, which is a big concern for businesses.

The app is only available on Apple devices, so PC and Android users will have to look elsewhere for their route-planning software.

  • Works similarly to Google Maps
  • 3D maps and building views
  • You can only add 2 stops
  • Inaccurate information
  • Only available on Apple devices

Apple Maps is a solid all-around choice for people looking for simple navigation with traffic updates. It’s great for running personal errands or handling deliveries with minimal stops.

Available on: Mac, iOS

6. TruckRouter  – Best for Truck Drivers & Fleets

TruckRouter is a free route-planning tool designed specifically for the trucking industry. If you’re a trucker, fleet manager, or dispatch professional looking for a solution to meet your needs, this is likely the one.

TruckRouter differs from other route optimization apps because it offers truck-specific routes. Trucks aren’t always able to travel everywhere due to height and weight restrictions, and the tool factors that in when it’s creating its routes.

TruckRouter also alerts drivers to low clearances, provides information on toll roads and costs, and offers a trip cost calculator to estimate your expenses.

The only downside is that the tool is web-based, meaning there aren’t downloadable apps for iOS and Android mobile devices.

  • Designed for the trucking industry
  • Truck specific routes
  • Alerts truckers of low clearances and road elevation
  • It helps you estimate expenses
  • No mobile apps are available
  • Only allows up to 5 stops

Specifically designed for truck drivers with features like height clearances and weight restrictions, it is essential for trucking companies and logistics.

7. SalesRabbit   – Best for Sales Teams

SalesRabbit is a lead generation and team management solution for businesses. They also offer a free multi-stop route planner.

This tool features turn-by-turn directions, and multiple stops per route and lets you plot your leads on an interactive map. As you would expect, it works seamlessly with SalesRabbit’s other solutions, so this is ideal for anyone already using their software.

Sales Rabbit’s tool also offers appointment setting services. You can filter your appointments by status, set scheduled reminders, and get directions.

To use this route planner, you’ll need to sign up for Sales Rabbit Lite, which is a free version of their sales management software.

In October 2023, Sales Rabbit announced improvements to Proposals, Scheduler, Importer, and Lead Cards. Proposals now integrates with solar design tools and financing options, Scheduler is in early access and can sync with calendars, and Lead Cards have been improved with multi-disposition tracking, owner display, and a DGAI toggle.

While they have not announced what they have planned for the rest of 2024, in January SalesRabbit released the Amplify app for SalesRabbit Gamification users , which includes battles, competitions, achievements, social surround activities, and dashboards to boost motivation and productivity.

  • Perfect for salespeople
  • Works seamlessly with SalesRabbit
  • Offers appointment scheduling feature
  • A limited number of stops available for each route
  • No desktop functionality

SalesRabbit is a tool built specifically for sales teams to plan efficient routes for visiting clients or prospects.

Available on: iOS, Android

8. Speedy Route – Best for Simple Sales Routes

Speedy Route is an excellent route optimizer for delivery routes, salespeople, and anyone who needs to plan complicated trips. There are a few features that make Speed Route superior to many other options.

First, it will automatically reorder your stops to create the quickest and most efficient route possible. It also supports timeboxing, which accommodates situations where you can only arrive at a location before or after a specific time.

After your route is calculated, Speedy Route’s drag-and-drop feature makes it easy for you to tweak your stops’ order and make adjustments as needed. Once you’re happy with your route, you can export your directions to a spreadsheet.

While there are many great things about this tool, there are a few negatives. The free version only allows you to enter ten stops, and the interface isn’t as sleek as some of the other options. Finally, because it’s a web-based solution, they don’t offer any downloadable apps.

  • Simple to use
  • Reorder your stops to create the most efficient route
  • Offers time boxing to accommodate specific arrival times
  • Easy to make adjustments to your route
  • Can only add 10 locations
  • Poor interface
  • Downloadable apps not available

Tailored to meet the needs of sales teams, SpeedyRoutel is designed for planning efficient routes for visiting clients or prospects.

9. Circuit – Good Alternative for Professionals

Circuit provides route optimization software with several advanced features that professionals will love. They offer a free version for those on a tight budget and a paid subscription service ideal for large businesses with more complex needs.

There are many features that make this an excellent tool. First, it allows you to set time constraints on locations if you need to arrive within a certain timeframe. You can also prioritize locations that require you to be there ASAP to ensure they’re first on your route.

Once you set your parameters, Circuit will rearrange your stops based on your parameters to create your optimal route. The app is available on the App Store and Google Play, so you can take your directions with you wherever you go.

You can find all Circuit product updates as they happen, here’s every new feature from last year:

  • A new function to compare estimated and actual route durations.
  • The ability to set a custom cost per delivery, a maximum number of stops per driver, and to create custom delivery zones, so you can hand a clear plan to your teams on the ground. Users can also create read-only team member roles, to ensure data privacy and allow for information to be accessed or hidden based on their job functions.
  • Integration with Circuit’s API, which was not available in earlier versions. Now users can integrate their existing systems with the Circuit for Teams API for end-to-end automation of delivery operations, including data import and optimization & distribution of routes and drivers.
  • Stop markers on the maps have been simplified.
  • New delivery analytics reports allow users to take a deeper dive into their data to analyze delivery costs and performance metrics, and to gain valuable insights across a number of factors: from the most common reason for failed deliveries to monitoring the percentage of late stops to tracking the average cost per delivery over time.

One of the only downsides to Circuit’s free route planner app is that it only lets you add ten stops which likely won’t be enough for many businesses.

  • Assign time constraints to certain locations
  • Prioritize the stops you need to get to first
  • Optimizes your stops to create the best route
  • It only allows you to add 10 stops

Circuit is a great tool for businesses, big or small, seeking to streamline delivery routes with 10 stops or less.

10. Mappr – Best for Delivery Routes

Formerly known as Flightmap, Mappr is an impressive online route planner that’s perfect for sales and delivery professionals. What’s unique about this tool is that it optimizes routes based on your vehicle’s size, speed, and volume. This makes it perfect for companies with different vehicle types.

This delivery route planner app is free for up to 200 stops per month per vehicle for two vehicles. While that might seem like a lot, if you’re delivering every business day, it works out to about 18 stops per day split between two vehicles. While not a ton, that’s still more than most apps.

For an extra charge, Mappr integrates with Tookan, a popular delivery management solution. So, if you’re already using that service, this might be a good choice for you.

Mappr also offers a number of sharing options, including exporting to a spreadsheet, sending your map in an email, or using a shareable link.

  • Optimizes routes based on vehicle type.
  • Integrates with Tookan
• Plenty of sharing options
  • Only about 9 stops per day per vehicle, which won’t be enough for most businesses
  • No downloadable app

Ideal for delivery services that need to optimize routes with frequent stops and tight delivery windows.

11. Komoot   – Best for Outdoor Activities

Komoot is a popular route planner and navigation app that’s designed specifically for outdoor activities like hiking, biking, and running.

It allows users to plan their route based on their preferred activity and fitness level and offers a variety of map types, including topographical and satellite maps, that people can use to customize their route based on factors like distance, elevation, and surface type.

Though voice guidance and offline maps are paid features, Komoot’s free version offers turn-by-turn navigation that makes it easy to follow directions while on the go while also giving users access to its large database of popular hiking and biking trails, scenic views, and other outdoor attractions.

And for outdoor enthusiasts who want to plan excursions that go beyond day trips, Komoot also allows users to plan multi-day tours, complete with overnight accommodations and points of interest along the way.

In 2023, Komoot made a lot of updates and released new features that make the app even more powerful and user-friendly:

  • Route planner enhancements improved their map display which makes their interface much cleaner, significantly improving overall readability and clarity.
  • Advanced surface analysis lets users gain deeper insights into their route’s terrain, including detailed information about surface types, waypoints, and elevation changes.
  • Precise distance and elevation data help users better gauge their physical effort.
  • The new “Suggest” functionality can recommend suitable routes based on chosen sport, desired distance or duration, and even public transport accessibility.
  • The new “Round Trip” option lets users create circular routes, which ideal for exploring new areas without getting lost.
  • The app’s offline functionality was also improved to make sure users can access maps and navigation even in areas with limited or no internet connectivity.

Komoot has announced a lot of new exciting features and updates for 2024:

  • Group Tours Feature : Launched on March 27th, 2024, this new feature enables users to easily plan and share social adventures with others. Group simplifies the organization and navigation of rides for friends and groups.
  • Partnership with HomeToGo : Komoot announced a strategic partnership with vacation rental platform HomeToGo in early April 2024. This collaboration is expected to facilitate travelers in planning outdoor activities and finding suitable accommodations along their routes.
  • Incremental Improvements to Mobile App : Komoot regularly updates its iOS and Android apps to address bugs, enhance performance, and introduce new features. The latest versions, rolled out in early 2024, focused on delivering a smoother user experience.

Though first-time users will find themselves facing a bit of a learning curve, the app has gained a strong community of users who share their favorite routes, making it easy to discover new places and activities. However, it’s worth noting that users have reported ongoing frustration with Komoot’s routing algorithms occasionally favoring gravel paths over paved roads for road cycling routes, a concern that persists into 2024.

One of Komoot’s particularly useful and community-oriented features includes tracking activity data, including distance, elevation, and speed and can sync with other fitness tracking apps like Garmin, Strava, and Apple Health.

  • Customizable routes
  • Turn-by-turn navigation with voice guidance
  • Large database of points of interest
  • Plan multi-day tours
  • A strong community of users
  • Premium features require a subscription
  • Learning curve

Focuses on outdoor navigation, great for cyclists, hikers, and other outdoor enthusiasts.

Available on: PC, Mac, iOS, Android

Where Free Solutions Fall Short

Free route planning tools are great for small businesses on a budget, but you’ll likely realize that you’ll need a more robust solution once you start to grow.

Here are a few drawbacks of free solutions:

  • Most only let you add 10 – 20 stops
  • Not all of them optimize the order of your stops
  • You can only plan one route at a time

If you have a large fleet that makes many stops per day, these limitations will greatly reduce your efficiency. If you have the budget, we highly recommend looking into an affordable paid tool like Maptive .

  • Add an unlimited number of stops to your routes
  • Automatically reorder your stops to create the most efficient route
  • Plan multiple routes at once
  • Upload all your locations within seconds from a spreadsheet

The Complete Guide to Multi Stop Route Planning

Multi-stop route planning is incredibly complex and difficult to do well. Luckily for you we have put considerable resources into developing technological solutions that are proven to work.

Brendan Tobin

Brendan Tobin , Caroline Hassett

Multi-stop route planning is incredibly complex and difficult to do well. In essence, the idea is to identify the most efficient route between multiple stops. It's not just about picking the shortest distance between stops – that might not be the best way to go. There's a whole bunch of things to consider when you're figuring out the best route for multiple stops. Delivery teams that have efficiently planned their multi stop routes can benefit from things like lower costs, time saved and happier customers!

Here is what you will learn in our complete guide to multi stop route planning :

What is multi-stop route planning?

How to do multi stop route planning, why is multi stop route planning important.

What Features Must Multi Stop Route Planning Software Have?

Best Multi Stop Route Planners

Multi-stop route planning is a strategic method used to optimize delivery routes by identifying and arranging multiple destinations in the most efficient order. It considers various factors like distance, traffic conditions, time constraints, driver breaks & availability, zones, priority of stops and more. This approach helps businesses save time, reduce fuel consumption, and streamline logistics by determining the most logical sequence of stops to reach multiple locations in the shortest time possible.

It’s important to embrace technology when planning routes with multiple stops . Algorithms consider real-time travel data and can readjust routes if circumstances change. Multi stop routes planners help by accounting for various factors like:

  • Distance between stops: Optimizing the order of stops for the shortest overall distance.
  • Delivery time windows: Ensuring timely arrivals within specified time frames.
  • Vehicle capacity: Maximizing load efficiency for each trip.
  • Driver skill and availability: Assigning routes based on individual capabilities and availability.
  • Driver hours: Managing schedules to comply with legal driving hour restrictions.
  • Load balancing: Distributing loads evenly across routes to prevent overburdening.

Creating territories within delivery areas is a game-changer. It not only increases customer concentration, which minimizes per-stop costs, but also facilitates familiar routes for drivers, enhancing efficiency.

Assigning specific territories to drivers reduces their commute time to the initial stop, significantly cutting down miles driven—often by 10-15%. Additionally, organizing territories by days of the week optimizes delivery schedules. For instance, dedicating one vehicle to a particular area on Mondays and another on Wednesdays ensures fully loaded trips and maintains cost-effectiveness.

Attempting to manually plan these intricate routes can result in costly human errors. Mistakes in multi-stop route planning may lead to missed or repeated deliveries, misplacements of packages, and delays in deliveries. The precision afforded by technology-driven planning significantly mitigates these risks, enhancing overall operational efficiency and customer satisfaction.

Multi-stop route planning stands as more than a mere supplementary task in delivery operations or sales visits; it's intricately interwoven with a business's entire operational framework. Inefficiencies in this area can trigger ripple effects impacting packing teams, factory productivity ('up-time'), and various other facets of the business. For this reason, it is critically important to get your systems connected. Your online ordering system should feed orders directly through to your packing teams and your delivery drivers, facilitated by robust multi-stop route planning software. Similarly, for field sales, integrating CRM systems with multi-stop route planners ensures consistent and efficient customer outreach.

What features must multi-stop route planning software have?

Route planning & optimization.

Efficient last-mile planning is integral, as inadequate strategies can spike overall logistical costs by a staggering 20-40%. Robust route optimizing algorithms within the software play a pivotal role in reducing the cost per delivery by a substantial 33% when compared to conventional planning methods.

Live Fleet Tracking

The capability to visually track and manage the delivery fleet in real-time through live maps is a hugely important feature. This functionality enables on-the-fly adjustments, allowing managers to adapt routes promptly based on changing conditions or unforeseen circumstances. Such dynamic control not only maximizes efficiency but also ensures a smoother, more adaptable workflow for the entire fleet.

2. RouteSavvy

Price: $39 per month per vehicle

Available on: iOS, Android

Most useful for: Small to mid-sized fleets

RouteSavvy is a basic route planner for delivery teams and logistics or courier companies. They cater to a large cross section of business types but are relatively expensive for the feature set.

  • RouteSavvy has route optimization and address import as standard.
  • They have a visualization of multiple route options that can be useful in deciding which route to take. This is similar to Google Maps.
  • On the mobile app you can choose to navigate turn by turn in the app itself.
  • Delivery driver tracking via mobile GPS location services is available.
  • Reporting can be exported to third-party systems like Microsoft Excel.

3. MapQuest

Price: Free

Most useful for: Simple routing, business location

MapQuest has been around since 1996 and the interface feels like it hasn’t changed much since then. You have access for free but the ad pop-ups on the mapping functionality itself are very off putting.

  • Route planning can be done simply on the map
  • You can do voice navigation and it has real-time updates on traffic conditions

MapQuest does the job, just about. If you are old-school in your tastes this could appeal and it does do the job of route optimization very well, plus it is free. If, on the other hand, you want a more modern interface and better functionality then your business might be better investing in something a bit better.

4. Speedy Route

Price: $39 per driver per month

Speedy Route is a super simple routing platform that does the job of multi-stop routing in a clean interface. • Battle-tested and clean UI to go along with solid route optimization.
  • Fully customizable routes with post-optimization re-ordering as necessary.
  • Time window allocation for improved delivery success rate.
  • Free for up to 10 stops (like Google Maps)

What is a multi-drop route planner?

September 21, 2020 by Webfleet

Multi-drop route planning is the process of planning the best route for a driver to make more than two deliveries to various locations. A vehicle routing software solution automates the process for you by collecting and analyzing thousands of data points to determine the best route for multiple deliveries.

The vehicle routing software system should be able to plan, re-direct, or reschedule without compromising safety, environmental and business obligations. There are many checkpoints, such as the number of distribution centers, warehouses, or residential areas a driver must visit, so resource availability and driver safety must be taken into consideration.

How does multi-drop route planning work?

The vehicle routing software monitors all vehicle movements while taking into consideration the delivery timetables. And there should be a team or individual to ensure that the system has scheduled and assigned routes accordingly. This includes looking at distances, travel time and fuel consumption.

Once this is all set, the vehicle routing software uses data to choose the best vehicle and driver for the loads being delivered. It connects the dots based not only on the route the vehicle takes but also the client’s orders to bring them closer together. Also, using algorithms, it calculates the time to cover a certain distance under conditions such as driver hours regulations and weather conditions. Further, many multi-drop route planning systems allow drivers to communicate with fleet managers and clients in real-time for updated ETAs or other status updates.

How does multi-drop route planning help your business?

Multi-drop route planning helps you boost efficiency, keep fuel costs to a minimum, automate safety and stay compliant with driver hours regulations. It helps increase the efficiency of your fleet by automating all these tedious but important tasks.

By optimizing for the best route for multiple deliveries, it factors in fuel consumption. This helps drivers stay on the course without making unnecessary trips and saves fuel. It helps you stay compliant by calculating driver hours and notifying you before there is a risk of a breach.

Multi-drop route planning software

A  fleet management solution like Webfleet offers fleet managers a well-organized multi-drop route planning software. Besides the benefits mentioned above, it also ensures resources are used efficiently, high levels of customer service are maintained and optimal working conditions are provided for drivers and employees.

Multi drop delivery route planner software

Multi drop delivery route planner software

Multidrop route planning is an art….one that transport planners have perfected over many years. Historically a manual process, involving the use of maps, pins and spreadsheets, there is now a simpler way to tackle the challenge of creating and optimising a multi-drop route that is cost effective, resource efficient and meets your customer expectations.

Here we take a look at how the Podfather delivery route planner and electronic proof of delivery system can help you remove the headache of planning and managing a multi stop route plan, improve customer service, and unlock the hidden potential sitting within your logistics, healthcare, service management or home delivery vehicle fleet.

PODFather’s Multi Drop Route Planner

Using Podfather’s multi-drop route planner functionality you can build routes that automatically take business critical factors, such as time windows, vehicle capacity, and driving hours into consideration. Once you have your job information – whether it be sitting in an order management system or as a CSV file – you can upload it into Podfather either through our robust API or by CSV import.

The Podfather system also holds information about your customers, your drivers, your depots, and your vehicles – all this is added as part of your system onboarding process. Now that you have uploaded a day’s worth of delivery information you just need to hit the optimise button and our advanced algorithms will get to work and return a set of routes that take fleet capacity, customer time window restrictions and driver availability into consideration.

Your planning team can review routes on a map, or in table form, using our intuitive drag and drop functionality to move stops between routes, or make any required multi-drop route changes. You can instantly see the impact each change has on the plan for the day. Once finalised, these routes are shared automatically with drivers who can review their shift information using the Podfather app which runs on even the most basic of smartphones.

The benefit of multi-drop route planning with Podfather

So, what makes the Podfather multi-drop route planner way better than the manual way of old? Well…. planning a multi-drop route is an extremely difficult thing to do manually. It requires a lot of knowledge and experience to create a plan that can handle the delicate balance between meeting customer expectations, making best use of the resources you have available and controlling costs. With Podfather helping to create an optimised plan you can be assured that your multi-drop plan won’t break any of the rules, restrictions or customer constraints that could easily be overlooked. In addition, a Podfather multi-drop route planner will ensure that your available vehicle capacity is fully utilised, vehicles won’t be overloaded and that empty running is reduced across your fleet.

If you are a planner and are worried that this means you are no longer needed, then think again. You still get the benefit of using your knowledge as once we’ve done our bit your teams can then use their knowledge and experience to make those manual tweaks needed to perfect your multi-drop route plans prior to your vehicles heading out on the road.

Reporting – learn, refine, improve

Let us now fast forward in time to when your drivers are completing their shifts and returning to the depot. Historically, for operators doing their multi-drop route planning manually, there is no way of knowing exactly what happened when the vehicles were out on the road. Did they carry out their route in the right order, were there any product issues, or did they hit the promised customer time window?

With Podfather’s multi-drop route planner, you can close the loop on your multi-route plan by using the data that the system collects to review and refine your future plans. Are there customers who are always keeping drivers waiting?  Podfather can tell you this and you can refine your route times or use Podfather to send them an ETA message, so they are ready and waiting when their next delivery is coming. Are you losing customers due to poor service?  Podfather will create plans that are feasible, and our Driver App integrates with satellite navigation to keep drivers on the right track, so they if everything goes to plan your drivers should arrive on time, every time. But what happens if a driver gets stuck in traffic or must take a detour?

Historically you would have had no visibility of this but with Podfather managing, your multi-stop route plans you will get delivery tracking as part of the package. If you see that a driver has fallen behind or missed a drop, the ETAs sent to customers can be updated to show where the driver is and when they are now expecting to be making each delivery… after all an informed customer is less likely to be disgruntled compared to one who doesn’t have a clue where their delivery is.
