The best Lisbon private night tours & experiences with locals

In a city as stunningly cinematic as the Portuguese capital, you know the nightlife scene will be the stuff of fantasy. Lisbon’s beautiful buildings, stupendous scenery, and flawless horizons are breathtaking by day – but when the sun sets over the city’s iconic terracotta rooftops, Lisbon becomes magical in a different way. Night tours in Lisbon with City Unscripted are the perfect way to skip the tourist traps and get right into the good stuff. Anyone with a guidebook can have a happy evening moving between the city’s moonlit monuments and landmarks – but with us, you’ll spend a night in Lisbon living it up exactly like the locals do.

Meet some of our Lisbon local hosts

Like the people who travel with us, they have different backgrounds and interests – but they’re all so passionate about the place they call home, they choose to spend their free time sharing it with the like-minded travelers matched to them.

Locals and tourists sitting at a viewpoint after sunset in Lisbon

It seems improbable, but the list of things to do in Lisbon at night is even longer than the day. Don’t forget to pack your stamina on night tours in Lisbon, because you’ll quickly learn it’s not uncommon for locals to arrive at a bar after midnight, move to a club at three, and head back home when the sun has risen. Night tours in Lisbon will leave you spoiled for choice. From cozy wine bars to live music lounges to pulsing nightclubs, the nightlife scene doesn’t only cater to revelers – but most evenings are best begun admiring the city’s skyline with a jug of sangria at a rooftop bar.

Local guide and tourists heading to a local bar to listen to fado music on a night out in Lisbon

Everyone’s idea of the perfect night is a little different, so our night tours in Lisbon are 100% personalized to suit your style. Between live music venues on the water’s edge, crowded clubs with well-known DJs, and buzzing bars that have perfected the art of mixology, Lisbon is often rated as one of Europe’s best nightlife spots. But if you like your evenings less loud and more low-key, night tours in Lisbon still have you covered. Sip a glass of regional red at a cozy wine bar, have a laid-back dinner at a local institution, or take a walk down twinkling streets lined with late-night stores.

On night tours in Lisbon, you definitely don’t have to hit the club scene – in fact, one of the most unforgettable things to do in Lisbon at night is listening to traditional fado music in the city that invented it. Perhaps you’ll make your way to a famous casa de fado for a dinner show performed by a well-known local artist while you enjoy a traditional Portuguese meal. Or maybe you’ll follow your local guide to a tiny tavern tucked away down a narrow cobbled street, where the fado is intimate and the pesticos – small plates of tasty traditional food – are the best in the city.

Latest reviews from our guests

I had a wonderful tour with Pedro. He was personable and I enjoyed conversing with him throughout the day. He asked at the start about my interests and tailored the tour to those concepts (history/architecture). I highly recommend Pedro to those looking to get to know the area.

Had a wonderful 4 hour walking tour with Pedro. We toured our first full day in Lisbon and we were glad we did. Pedro knows a lot about the history of the city and country and we enjoyed asking him many questions in an effort to learn as much as we could. He has a very easy going delivery. He paced things very well, we stopped at a couple of famous storefronts so we could taste local treats and he made recommendations for places for us to explore on our own, several of which we followed up on. Highly recommend City Unscripted and Pedro.

We covered a lot of distance, learned a lot, saw a lot and came away with a better understanding of the city

We really enjoyed the tour, he took us through Alfama, the streets we will would have never found and made the morning very enjoyable.

Things to Do in Lisbon at Night

night tour in lisbon

Our tour guides are always being asked by our guests about the best things to do at night in Lisbon. Who better to know than a local?

Using their experiences, we wrote this post about some of the best things to do in Lisbon in the evenings.

Included are free, cultural, and party-focused activities as well as famous attractions.

  • Things to Do in Alfama
  • How to Save Money with a Tourist Pass
  • Free Things to Do in Lisbon
  • Where to Store Your Luggage

Disclosure : While our recommendations are always unbiased, we may receive a small share of sales through some of the links below at no cost to you. See the full text .

1) Enjoy Local Fado Traditions

First things first! If we are talking about Lisbon evenings, we need to start with going to a Fado Restaurant.

Fado is a traditional Portuguese genre of music that started in Lisbon, and finding live performances is one of the best ways to experience the city.

You can find Fado all over the country, but the best place to find it is in Alfama - one of Lisbon’s oldest neighborhoods.

View this post on Instagram A post shared by David Ho (@david_pe_ho)

There you will find plenty of small, cozy restaurants that feature live music. If you want to have a table close to the singers, we suggest going early.

To enjoy the experience, eat a delicious “ Bacalhau ” or “Sardinhas.”

If you want to go to one famous and typical - go to Adega Machado which opened in 1937!

2) Discover Bairro Alto Nightlife

Bairro Alto is known for being a nightlife hotspot in the city. It is full of shops, restaurants, and bars.

You’ll see the typical winding, narrow streets. They’re perfect for strolling down since the neighborhood has been pedestrian-only since 2003.

It seems that small bars, cafes, and restaurants are in every doorway throughout the district. This makes it easy to make your own pub crawl night since most spots are full of locals and tourists.

Groups of friends stand outside with drinks as the evening starts. Live music in the restaurants transitions into lively club music that plays through the night.

3) Pink Street

Cais do Sodre has recently become one of Lisbon’s most popular spots. It has had some help from Pink Street’s transformation from the old Red Light District.

Pink Street is now a hub for energetic nightlife and draws in tourists for the modern bars and clubs.

In Portugal, we can drink on the streets, so locals spend the first part of their evenings in the open air.

View this post on Instagram A post shared by Portugal Natural (@portugalnatural_co)

If you want to embrace the spirit, you can be Portuguese for the night and drink some Super Bock on the street. Talking in the street is a popular pre-party event.

Also, you have the Pink Street bars and clubs that stay open a bit later than those you’ll find in Bairro Alto.

Choose one of them and enjoy a crazy fun night - the list includes Viking, Europa, The Music Box, Toquio, and Rotterdam, all in the same street.

4 ) Go on a Pub Crawl

We all know that the best way to get to know a city is through a tour. If you’re ready for a good party at the same time, a pub crawl is the perfect activity.

Lisbon’s locals and tourists both love a night out, so there will be no shortage of new friends to meet.

night tour in lisbon

In Portugal, the nights tend to start after midnight and end around 7:00 am with an amazing and fat breakfast right before bed.

5) Sailing Tour on the River at Sunset

If you’re looking for a relaxing and luxurious way to spend an evening, gliding down the Tagus River at sunset is the perfect tour option.

And believe us, the sunset on the river is one of the most beautiful things to see in Lisbon!

View this post on Instagram A post shared by Brian Cmiel (@traversethemap)

The sky displays beautiful pink and red tones and makes the city views even prettier.

Some sunset cruise options come with drinks , while others focus on commentary from a local guide .

6) Ride the 28 Tram

Riding the 28 Tram on its steep tracks is a popular activity, as it is, unintentionally, a lot like a sightseeing bus and will take you from one end of Lisbon to the other.

Considering the city is covered in steep streets, it is also a great way to rest at the end of the day.

Riding the 28 Tram at night means it could be a bit less crowded, and you’ll get a good view of the city lit up as the nightlife starts coming alive.

If you’ve been to Sao Jorge Castle, you can make it back to Bairro Alto. A great route to take is from R. Conceição to Bairro Alto.

Read our complete post on riding Tram 28 and what you will see during your journey.

If you’re taking advantage of the Lisboa Card , this also comes with a free travel pass that can be used on the trams!

7) Enjoy Opera and Classical Music

While opera is not Lisbon’s most widespread art form, there is a beautiful opera company that performs at Teatro Nacional de São Carlos.

You can find various performances throughout the year in this Milan-inspired theatre.

The theatre is in the Chiado district, which is known for its live entertainment and bohemian style.

In the past, this theatre has hosted lyrical performances from Giuseppe Verdi, concerts with the National Symphony, and ballets with the Portuguese Symphony Orchestra.

No matter what time of year, there will be something beautiful to see or hear at the theatre.

8) Find Nice Views at Rooftop Bars

There are a lot of rooftop bars in the city to take advantage of the beautiful views looking toward the river.

Depending on the neighborhood you choose, the atmosphere and the sights will be different, but they are all enjoyable!

View this post on Instagram A post shared by eriwhere (@eriwhere)

We suggest hunting down a table at Topo, at the top of Martim Moniz shopping center. Most evenings feature DJ sets to accompany your drinks.

Rio Maravilha’s terrace is a perfect option if you’re looking for delicious appetizers and cocktails.

Since there are so many to choose from, we’ve also linked to Time Out’s favorite Lisbon rooftops .

9) Go to a Theatre Performance

The theatre is something you should see in Lisbon.

The Municipal Theater São Luiz at Praça do Rossio has beautiful architecture as well as a great schedule of plays, film and documentary screenings, book signings, and stand-up comedy performances.

The architecture and history of the building are a big draw for private events, but many of them will still be on the public calendar.

If you check the calendar for public showcases by local artists, some of them are free!

10) Miradouros Viewpoints

The light of Lisbon is iconic and so is the moonlight.

If you are not looking for rooftop food and drinks but prefer the views, you can take a tram ride or a walk to many different Miraduoros in the city.

If you are on a romantic trip you need to do this! If you are traveling solo or with friends, it is a perfect opportunity to relax, chat, or take some great pictures.

View this post on Instagram A post shared by Paulo Faria (@ppfaria)

Since these terraces are free to access, you can visit as many as you like! Each lookout spot will have a slightly different angle looking out over Lisbon.

The Alfama neighborhood has multiple Miraduoros, like Miraduoro da Graça, pictured above. Read more about this amazing vantage point in our post on Alfama .

11) Lux Fragil - The Most Iconic Disco

If you are a house and electro music fan, you absolutely must go to Lux Fragil . The crowd tends to party until morning.

If you’re there all night, we suggest staying on the terrace to watch the sunrise over the river.

View this post on Instagram A post shared by Ana Ferreira (@ana_dancingqueen)

Keep in mind that it can be a bit difficult to get into Lux, as well as other big discos around.

Be prepared for lines at the entrance, and you cannot wear beachwear or flip-flops inside.

12) Bike Night Tour

Looking to get your workout in while sightseeing? If you’re ready to tackle Lisbon’s seven hills and enjoy the views, take an evening electric bike tour.

The e-bikes will keep you from getting stuck going up the winding streets.

This 3-hour tour begins at 18:00 each evening and includes the e-bike, a reflective vest, and a helmet to keep you safe.

You will ride past the National Pantheon and Bel Monte Palace, and learn about your local tour guide’s favorite spots.

Find more information on the bike tour here .

13) Evening Tour of Belém

If you’re looking for a walking tour that starts in the late afternoon to early evening, Take Lisboa offers their Belém tour at 16:00 on Wednesdays, Fridays, and Saturdays.

It lasts 2.5 hours and takes you past the bright houses, the National Palace, gardens, and important historical monuments like the Tower of Belem.

View this post on Instagram A post shared by Dani de las Heras (@bacalaodisfrazao)

You’ll end up close to the River Tagus, which is perfect for finding a cafe or restaurant with open-air seating and enjoying the sunset as you rest after the walk.

Find pay-what-you-like Belém tours here .

14) Take a Ghost Tour

If you enjoy scary stories, go on a ghost tour to learn about the spooky side of Lisbon’s history.

One of the famous tours is Lisbon Mysteries - Untold Stories .

This walk explores places and landmarks with stories you probably haven’t heard - about serial killers, police stories, and local horror stories.

View this post on Instagram A post shared by Katie (@k8thawk)

The 2-hour tour will pass by Chiado, Praça do Comérico - where there have been punishments from past centuries - and will enter the cursed Church of São Domingos .

You will also pass through places that have seen World War II events and been part of conspiracy theories.

15) Enjoy an Exploration Game

Interested in learning more about the history of Lisbon? Well, you can do that at night in a fun way by playing a self-guided treasure hunt.

You can play the game at night, or anytime, once you have purchased it as you play with an app.

Over 2 hours, you'll discover some of the most interesting and notable locations in the oldest districts of the city.

Book this Exploration Game or learn more .

16) Visit the Banksy Museum

Bring some cutting-edge street art into your night at the Banksy Museum.

In this immersive digital experience, you’ll see an array of works by this anonymous world-famous street artist .

View this post on Instagram A post shared by António Cruz (@tomcrux)

From murals, projections, and video installations, take in a carefully curated collection of 100 of Banksy's works, including the well-known "Girl with Balloon'  to lesser-known, but just as fascinating, pieces of art.

Banksy: The Exhibition is open until 7 pm on Sundays to Fridays and 8 pm on Saturdays. Tickets are 13€.

17) Time Out Market

This popular food market is quite lively at night with locals dining at more than 25 restaurants and drinking at the market's 8 bars.

View this post on Instagram A post shared by einwandervogel (@einwandervogel)

The vibe is energetic and hip. Plus shows and special events are held there at affordable prices.

From samba to emo to alternative, there’s always a great gig going on.

Time Out Market Lisbon is open every night until midnight.

Hello there, night owls and party lovers! As a seasoned Lisbonite and a nocturnal creature myself, I can confirm that the city’s life truly begins after sunset. Lisbon’s nightlife is a treasure trove of experiences – from the strains of fado resonating through the ancient Alfama streets to lively rooftop parties under the stars. Dive into the excitement with my comprehensive guide to the best night activities in Lisbon . I’ll unravel my top 10 list of these thrilling experiences that will help you uncover the magic of Lisbon after dark.

Table of Contents

Explore Bairro Alto – Night Activity #1 in Lisbon

Bairro Alto, a quaint neighborhood by day, transforms into a vibrant hub of life as the sun sets. With a labyrinth of bars and small clubs, it’s an essential part of the Lisbon night scene. I have lost count of the number of nights I’ve spent bar-hopping here, meeting a fascinating mix of locals and travellers.

Attend a Fado Show – An Unforgettable Night Activity in Lisbon

Nothing embodies the soul of Lisbon better than fado. These melancholic tunes echoing through the narrow streets at night stir a deep sense of nostalgia. Casa de Linhares and Clube de Fado are among the best places to get lost in these heart-rending melodies.

Dine at a Rooftop Restaurant

One of my favorite night activities in Lisbon is having dinner at a rooftop restaurant. Venues like PARK and Topo Chiado offer not just delectable dishes, but breathtaking nighttime views of the cityscape that transform your meal into a sensory delight.

Experience Night Market at LX Factory

Every Sunday, LX Factory, Lisbon’s creative hub, comes alive with a vibrant night market. Browsing through a myriad of handmade goods, vintage items, and unique arts under the stars is a wonderful way to spend your evening.

Enjoy Alfama District’s Nightlife

For a more traditional night out in Lisbon, head to the Alfama district. The winding, narrow lanes come alive with small taverns and bars playing live music. I remember my first night in Alfama – the harmonious blend of laughter, clinking glasses, and soulful fado tunes was truly enchanting.

Night Photography at Belém Tower

Photography enthusiasts (like myself) will find a night visit to Belém Tower a rewarding experience. The monument’s intricate details, beautifully lit against the night sky, make for stunning compositions.

Visit Casino Lisboa

For those who enjoy a bit of a gamble, Casino Lisboa offers an exhilarating night of games, live shows, and fine dining. I’m not a big gambler myself, but the electrifying atmosphere here is something worth experiencing.

Night Tour of Lisbon’s Illuminated Monuments

One of the most mesmerizing night activities in Lisbon is a tour of its illuminated monuments. As the city lights up, landmarks like the Lisbon Cathedral and Saint George Castle reveal a whole new facet of their beauty.

Experience Cais do Sodré’s Pink Street

Once Lisbon’s red-light district, Pink Street is now a go-to spot for a fantastic night out. Pulsating with music and energy, it’s a must-visit for dance lovers. I have fond memories of dancing the night away here!

Attend a Performance at Teatro Nacional D. Maria II

Ending the night with a performance at one of Lisbon’s grandest theatres is a classy way to experience the city’s cultural side. Even as a local, I’m always awed by the grandeur and talent on display here.

So, there you have it, fellow night-owls – a round-up of the top night activities in Lisbon . From haunting fado music to riveting casino games, Lisbon’s nocturnal offerings promise experiences to cherish. No matter your age or interest, Lisbon after dark has something in store for you. So why wait? The city of seven hills is all set to dazzle you under the stars. As we say in Portuguese, ‘divirta-se’ – have fun!

Lisbon, the coastal capital of Portugal, sits in the southern half of the country, facing out into the Atlantic. Portugal’s rich history of exploration is clear to see when you visit Lisbon. Its origins date back to Roman times, yet it was the “Age of Discovery” from the end of the 15th Century that defines Lisbon. Portugal has a population of just over 10 million, a quarter of whom live in the greater metropolitan region of Lisbon.

Tourism plays a major role in the national economy, and significant numbers visit Lisbon annually. They come for the history and culture, the varied cuisine and the warm climate between Easter and the onset of winter. You will not encounter the crowds expected in some European cities, but it is still worth buying advance tickets for some of its attractions to avoid the queues. Here are some ideas for how to spend your time in Lisbon at night.

Top 3 Tours

1- enjoy a pub crawl, 2- take a cruise at night, 3- go solo in old town, 4- take in the fado, 5- watch a game, 6- learn at a cookery class, 7- enjoy dinner and the fado, 8- taste portuguese tapas , 9- head for the oceanarium , 10- eat and drink at the hard rock café, 11- test your mini golf skills, 12- save the world, 13- ride the 28 tram, 14- learn about lisbon’s ghosts, 15- enjoy a night at the opera, 16- get a view from a rooftop bar, 17- go clubbing, 18- go shopping before dinner, 19- discover pink street, 20- roam bairro alto, lisbon at night.

  • Lisbon Card – Save money and gain free access to Lisbon’s top attractions with a 24, 48 or 72-hour pass.
  • Oceanarium Entrance Ticket – Skip the line and go straight through to see over 8000 marine creatures.
  • ‘Fado in Chiado’ Live Show – Listen to the magical music of Lisbon.

If you are new to the city, what better way to find its best bars than to take a guided pub crawl ?

With a few more nights in the city, you will get plenty of ideas for places to revisit later in your break in Lisbon.

Each of the bars you visit will offer you a welcome drink with special deals at every turn.

The top bohemian neighbourhood in Lisbon is Bairro Alto, your likely destination for the evening.

Lisbon at night Tagus River Aerial view of multilane road leading on suspension bridge over Tagus river in twilight

You can get a different perspective of any city from a boat.

The Tagus flows through Lisbon into the Atlantic and cruising along the river will give you a chance to see the significant landmarks on either bank.

You can sit back, drink in hand, and see many of Lisbon’s highlights at night.

You’ll need to put your drink down regularly because there are plenty of photo opportunities, including Sao Jorge Castle, the Belem Tower, Jeronimos Monastery and the Monument of Discoveries.

In a couple of hours, you’ll see enough to plan what you intend to do and see the following day.

Lisbon at night Alfama Lisboa

A good way to get around Lisbon under your own steam is to take a sitway tour .

Easy to use, a sitway scooter allows you to cover a far greater area than you would be able to cover on foot.

You can visit different neighbourhoods, pass bars and restaurants, and listen to nighttime activities.

Lisbon is hilly and not ideal for walking too far unless you are a regular walker, so a sitway solves that problem.

The neighbourhood of Alfama, with its narrow streets, historic monuments and the Castelo de Sao Jorge, is captivating under lights.

You can reach several impressive viewpoints from places such as Miradouro Largo das Portas do Sol, formerly the entrance gates to the old city.

waht to do at night solo travel lisbon fado guitars

Taking a guided walking tour around Lisbon at night is great fun as it’s a busy city at night but the walk is leisurely.

Starting in the city’s heart, you will pass Lisbon’s major landmarks and follow the Tagus River for a while.

Among the highlights is the Monument to the Discoveries, the UNESCO World Heritage site of the Belem Tower, followed by views of Lisbon Bridge and the statue on the hill, Mosteiro dos Jeronimos.

When it’s time for something to eat, you’ll stop at a local restaurant with live entertainment, folk music and the Fado. You’ll love the ‘Fado in Chiado’ live show, which is highly popular, so reserve your tickets here .

lisbon streets at night

The Portuguese love their football and Lisbon’s most famous club is Benfica, former winners of the European Cup.

Its stadium, Luz, better known as the Stadium of Light, is open to visitors who can see the club’s history in its museum. Reserve your tour and ticket here .

The relatively new stadium replaces Benfica’s original home, which held 120,000 spectators yet remembers the days of the great Eusebio and his team.

If you are in the city when Benfica has a game, you should be able to get a ticket to see today’s team because the capacity is still 65,000.

Benfica continues to compete at the highest level of Portuguese football and a game under floodlights is a great experience.

If you’re keen on cooking, you can learn about local cuisine and evening classes can cover several different things.

Those with a sweet tooth should try learning to make the delicious pastries you may have sampled with a coffee.

Pastel de Nata is a Portuguese favourite and you can bake a batch yourself in a pastry class.

You will do the whole process, feeling the texture of the dough and smelling the great aroma from the oven.

The final treat is eating the pastry you have prepared.

Lisbon at night old Alfama District

Alfama is Lisbon’s oldest district and a guided introduction to its delights, and the famous Fado is a fun way to enjoy a night in Lisbon .

Sample local cuisine in Alfama before heading off through cobbled streets in Mouraria to a Fado concert.

UNESCO recognised Fado a decade ago, adding it to the list of Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity items.

It dates back to the 19th Century and involves somewhat solemn lyrics to a Portuguese guitar.

Fado is common within the city and you will hear the music coming from many places during your time there.

Anyone unfamiliar with Lisbon can do worse than employ local expertise to introduce them to Lisbon at night.

There’s no hurry on a walking tour that involves learning about and tasting Portuguese wine and sampling tapas in places that specialise in this popular cuisine.

Guides are well-versed in the traditions behind the best tapas, whether from the north of Portugal around Porto or the Algarve in the south.

Everything is very relaxed and casual. Check out this food and win e tour .

Lisbon at night Oceanarium

Lisbon’s Oceanarium has been popular with visitors since it opened in 1998.

The largest indoor aquarium in Europe, it features a series of permanent exhibitions from the North Atlantic to the Antarctic, the tropical Indian Ocean to the temperate Pacific.

You will find the Oceanarium on the site that hosted Expo 1998 and buying a ticket in advance makes sense to avoid any queues .

In total, there are over 500 different species with more than 8,000 creatures in the place.

Its design is such that you will get the impression that you are within one stretch of water, even though the four sections are separate. The Oceanarium is open until 8 pm.

There are many international brands that you will find in cities worldwide.

One such brand is the Hard Rock Café.

It is not typical of Lisbon, but the brand’s success is because of its marketing and content.

Music fans are certain to like this place in downtown Lisbon, and the queues suggest its popularity continues.

If you buy a ticket in advance, you can bypass the line and head straight through the door.

The menu across the many outlets worldwide is standard, the music energetic, and the souvenirs you can buy often mean you will wear something that helps to advertise the brand wherever you travel.

Even if you are not a regular golfer, the Mini Golf Experience , new to Lisbon, is great fun.

It is indoor and uses UV Neon and natural light.

There are 18 holes in total, several challenging and quirky but it is all about fun, not the score you make.

The complex also has pool tables, air hockey, soccer tables and a bar to relax and watch all the activity.

Whatever your preference, this is an excellent venue for everyone with children likely to want to return during their holiday in Lisbon.

Perhaps you will agree with them if you are unlucky enough to have a rainy day while in Lisbon.

Video games are hugely popular and offer challenges on the screen, but Lisbon has an attraction that is similar to a video game.

The real-life challenge involves walking around two kilometres (1.3 miles) to defeat a threat to the world and you have 90 minutes to do it.

Armed with an iPad and action pack, you head out as a Time Cop, having been given a briefing at Lisbon Escape Hunt Headquarters on your specific assignment.

The clock begins as you leave, then you head back to HQ to hand over the action pack and relax, especially satisfied if you have succeeded. Check it out here .

what to do at night in lisbon

One of the attractions of Lisbon is its hills and the views it offers from on high, which means you can face a challenge.

The 28 Tram is one way to see its many highlights and landmarks while sitting down.

There are no hills to climb; the tram does it for you.

It opened at the end of the First World War and went from Martim Moniz to Campo Ourique, passing through all the popular tourist districts of Alfama, Baixa, Estrela and Graca.

Trams are regular, every 10 minutes or so, and the whole route of around seven kilometres (4.4 miles) takes up to an hour, depending on the traffic.

28 is busy as it has become one of the best ways for visitors to see Lisbon’s main attractions. Save money with this 72-hour tram, bus and boat ticket .

how safe is lisbon to walk at night

Most cities have a history that combines fact and legend.

Lisbon is not alone in having some famous ghosts associated with its past. Ghosts include Custodio, a 19th Century tobacco worker who seemingly “lives” in the building where he once worked.

Working conditions were deplorable then, and today the building is a school. Ghosts inhabit the Faculty of Arts, making the elevator run, so it seems.

Arguably the best local story concerns a blind girl who legend says fell into the sea.

They say she is regularly seen carrying a doll in her hand.

If the supernatural interests you, check on the tours that will help you to learn more about Lisbon’s ghosts and nighttime is the time to “enjoy” them.

Lisbon at night commerce square

Teatro Nacional de São Carlos has played host to opera since the end of the 18th Century.

Its history is fascinating and well worth learning about.

The architecture has an Italian influence, with the building becoming a National Monument in 1928.

There is a resident artistic group, and the national symphony orchestra has been resident since 1993.

A regular programme of events is published well in advance so you can plan ahead of your visit to Lisbon.

There are three venues in one.

The foyer has informal chamber recitals, while the Main Hall and the Grand Hall both offer plenty that might interest you.

seeing lisbon at night

The warm climate for many months makes outdoor drinking and dining a nightly activity.

The hilly terrain offers plenty of panoramic views, and rooftop bars and restaurants do likewise.

You can even find rooftop pools in Lisbon.

As an example, Hotel Tivoli in the centre of the city has the Sky Bar, an ultra-modern bar with views to the river and across the city.

The range of drinks is extensive, with DJs and live acts regularly in attendance.

There are many other alternatives with plenty of information online, including dress code details, usually smart yet casual. Check out this bar crawl .

lisbon at night clubs

Lisbon has several nightclubs where you can dance until the small hours.

Perhaps the most famous is Lux, which opened more than 20 years ago.

The cover charge is around £10, charged locally in euro, of course.

There are two dance floors and a rooftop terrace. If you have the stamina, you can stay until the sunrises, a great view from the rooftop.

Lux is busy, with queues forming in the early hours after some places have closed.

It’s not where you can spend long hours if you have a busy itinerary the next day, so plan your time accordingly.

things to do at night in lisbon Christmas lights in a cobblestone street

The Avenida da Liberdade is the street in Lisbon where you will find the poshest shops, famous international brand names and boutiques selling designer clothes.

It is a tree-lined avenue where Rolex, Cartier and Louise Vuitton sell their exclusive goods.

The bars and restaurants are top quality, so a little shopping before dinner is an option.

There is no late-night closing, but, in many cases, you can shop until 8 pm before you head to a restaurant for dinner.

Rua Nova do Carvalho or Pink Street, is a pretty street, regularly photographed by everyone because it’s so charming.

It is in Cais do Sodre district and has many of the most popular bars in the city. Cais do Sodre.

Cais do Sodre was once Lisbon’s Red-Light District, when it was an important port with plenty of transient sailors and travellers as customers.

It is no longer the district that attracts criminals, “ladies of the night” and gamblers.

You would never guess Pink Street’s history if you head there for a night out. Why pink?

Well, a decade ago, the painters got to work and pink was their favourite colour to make an impact in the street.

Lisbon at night Bairro Alto

By day, Bairro Alto, a hilly neighbourhood in Lisbon, is very quiet. At night, it is utterly transformed with crowds filling its narrow streets.

Its bars are small, so drinkers spill out into the streets, creating a great, and completely safe atmosphere.

The Bica Funicular will take you to São Roque Church and open up views from Miradouro de São Pedro de Alcântara.

Centuries-old houses in the neighbourhood are vividly decorated while the restaurants inevitably play Fado music.

Tables are out in the street, enjoying the mild night climate.

Bairro Alto is the party district of central Lisbon and you should visit one night during your stay in Lisbon.

It will be crowded, especially at weekends, but it is great fun. It doesn’t close down until 4 am.

Traditional fado music, beautiful sunsets, and the clinking of glasses as people sip Portuguese wine: these are just a few things you’ll find when looking for the best things to do in Lisbon at night!

Set sail on the Tagus River with a sunset sailing cruise.

To date, this remains one of our absolute favorite things to do in Lisbon at night!

The views of Lisbon from the Tagus are wonderful, and there’s nothing quite like experiencing the city from the water.

Lisbon’s history and culture are deeply tied to the  Tejo  and to the wide open sea that lies beyond it, and relaxing on a sailboat is a fantastic way to reflect on your trip to Portugal so far.

Plus, it’s simply lots of fun, and more affordable than you might expect!

Book your sunset sailing cruise in Lisbon today!

… or enjoy sunset views from the banks of the Tagus River.

Love the idea of enjoying views of the Tejo and its many sailboats, but don’t want to board one yourself?

If so, consider simply pulling up a spot along the riverfront to enjoy the views!

A couple of popular places to watch the sunset in Lisbon along the river include from the front of (or top of) the Museum of Art, Architecture, and Technology (MAAT) in Belém, and from the Cais das Colunas near the Praça do Comércio.

You’ll also find outdoor restaurants, bars, and food/drink stands along the riverfront–some seasonal and some not–that can be wonderful places to pull up a chair and soak in the sunset views!

Soak in the atmosphere of classic Portuguese fado music.

Fado, Lisbon’s most iconic form of music, is near-synonymous with the city.

Deeply heartfelt and nostalgic, fado is traditionally performed with a female singer and a male guitarist, each performing with deep emotion that is described in Portuguese as  saudade .

Melancholic nostalgia is a fairly close translation, but it’s one of those words that can’t quite be defined in other languages–only through Portuguese music.

This popular fado show  in Chiado is a popular, easy introduction to fado over the course of a one-hour performance and a great addition to your trip to Lisbon.

Chiado, in addition to being one of our favorite neighborhoods in Lisbon, is also located right next door to both Bairro Alto and Príncipe Real, making it easy to combine this fado show with other popular places to visit in Lisbon at night!

Grab dinner in trendy Príncipe Real.

Known for its trendy restaurants and shopping, plus beautiful views, Príncipe Real is a beautiful Lisbon neighborhood that thrives in the evenings.

It’s also one of our favorite places to grab dinner in Lisbon!

Restaurant options abound, from traditional Portuguese fare to international cuisine, so whatever you’re in the mood for, Príncipe Real has you covered (just be sure to make reservations–it’s a very popular place to eat!).

You’ll be spoiled for choice among restaurants here, but consider  Atalho Real  for steak (don’t skip the garlic bread–and they have a beautiful back garden, too),  A Cevicharia  for casual seafood, or  Tapisco  for incredible  petiscos  (Portuguese tapas).

Watch the sunset from one of Lisbon’s iconic miradouros.

Lisbon is famous for its hills… and the flipside of that is that Lisbon has absolutely incredible viewpoints over the city.

Called miradouros–which is a delightful word to keep an eye out all over Portugal–many of the city’s viewpoints rank among the top things to see in Lisbon.

For a different perspective (and often fewer crowds), though, consider visiting at night!

A few miradouros to consider include the Miradouro das Portas do Sol, the Miradouro de São Pedro de Alcântara (the perfect next stop if you have dinner in Príncipe Real), and the Miradouro da Graça.

The famous Miradouro de Santa Luzia loses a bit of its beauty at night (it’s harder to capture both the azulejos and view at the same time after dark), but it’s still worth a visit!

Learn about Portuguese cuisine on a food tour.

We’re big proponents of food tours around the world: combining traditional local food with a chance to take a walking tour of a city is a fantastic way to get acquainted with a new place!

We’ve taken a few Lisbon food tours over the years, all wonderful, but on your first trip to Lisbon, there’s none that I recommend more highly than  this food and wine tour .

With a convenient starting point that is very close to the Church of São Domingos,  this food tour  is filling, delicious, and informative–and you definitely won’t need to eat dinner afterward.

Best of all, it focuses primarily on introducing you to classic Lisbon cuisine, which will help you with ordering in restaurants for the rest of your time in Portugal.

Perhaps the biggest endorsement we can offer is that we have returned to several of the included establishments since, including bringing our friends and family to some of them when they visit us in Lisbon!

Don’t want to wander around or get overly full, but do want to explore Portuguese cuisine through the lens of an expert?

This popular tapas and wine tasting is perfect for wine and charcuterie lovers who want to learn what makes Portugal’s local wine, cheese, and meat special.

Portugal makes one of our absolute favorite cheeses in the world, not to mention excellent wine–if you ask us, it’s definitely worth familiarizing yourself with!

(Want to skip the cheese and meat and just stick with the wine? This budget-friendly wine tasting is a great alternative!)

Head over to LX Factory to experience a different side of Lisbon.

A one-time industrial complex that was given new life as a center for food, art, and more, LX Factory offers a chance to see a fun and modern side of Lisbon.

Packed with restaurants, shops, bars, and even offices (not that you’ll need to visit those!), LX Factory stays busy well into the evening, making it one of the best places to visit in Lisbon at night.

Bibliophiles like us shouldn’t miss Ler Devagar , one of Lisbon’s most beloved bookstores (it’s open until 10:00 PM on weekends and 9:00 PM on weekdays).

Step inside the Carmo Convent.

Looking for early evening activities in Lisbon–perhaps something to do right before dinner Príncipe Real?

Consider paying a visit to the roofless Carmo Convent, which closes at 7:00 PM!

Construction broke on the magnificent, Gothic-style Carmo Convent in 1393.

Fast forward a few centuries, and the church collapsed in the infamous earthquake of 1755.

And fast forward a couple  more  centuries, and you have the fascinating Carmo Convent of today: a roofless church stretching out over the Lisbon skyline.

The Carmo Convent was partially restored after the earthquake, but its roof was never put back on–and the resulting atmosphere is worth a visit.

In addition to the church itself, the small Carmo Archaeological Museum features artifacts from both Portugal and around the world, including 2 Peruvian mummies.

Meander through Baixa and stop by A Ginjinha for a drink.

Ginjinha, also known as ginja, is Portugal’s most popular liqueur.

And, as someone who typically doesn’t care for liqueurs, let me say–this one is absolutely fantastic.

Made with morello cherries among other delights, ginjinha is served in a small, shot-sized glass (which is sometimes made of chocolate), but it is meant to be sipped.

We’ve tried many brands in Lisbon,  Obidos , and beyond, but remain partial to Ginjinha Espinheira (it’s fabulous).

For a memorable place to sample this local drink, head to the popular and centrally located A Ginjinha bar in Baixa, which also happens to be a great neighborhood for walking around Lisbon at night!

… and head to the top of the Rua Augusta Arch.

The gorgeous Rua Augusta Arch, which stands at the edge of Praça do Comércio and at the entrance to Rua Augusta in Baixa, is one of Lisbon’s best hidden gems (granted, one that’s hidden in plain sight).

While just about everyone who visits Lisbon admires the arch from below, very few people enjoy the view from the top of the arch.

I’ve never seen a line here and personally walked right in when I climbed it.

For a small fee (3.5 Euro at the time of writing), you can head to the top of the arch via a combination of elevator rides and stairs.

The Rua Augusta Arch doesn’t close until 7:00 PM, which means that during part of the year, you’ll be able to enjoy views of Lisbon at night–or even, with the right timing, at sunset!

Visit the iconic Time Out Market in Lisbon after dark.

Lisbon’s famous Time Out Market is one of the most popular places in the city, but daytime isn’t the only option for visiting!

For a different Time Out Market experience, head over in the evening (it’s open until 12:00 AM, though some stalls may keep different hours) and eat dinner via a selection of stalls featuring some of Lisbon’s most beloved restaurants.

Once you finish, you’ll also find yourself just around the corner from Lisbon’s iconic pink street, which makes an excellent next stop for exploring Lisbon at night.

Grab dinner on Lisbon’s green street (Rua da Silva).

Sure, you’ve probably heard about Lisbon’s famous pink street–but what about its green one?

This narrow, charming street is full of decor, including the many plants perched on the edges of windows and balconies that give Rua da Silva its nickname of Green Street.

At night, small tables spill out into the streets as restaurants and bars take over the area, making for a relaxed but lively evening atmosphere.

We can heartily recommend A Obra for a tasty dinner while you’re there!

See an opera at the Teatro Nacional de São Carlos.

Hoping to enjoy a beautiful opera during your time in Lisbon?

The 18th-century Teatro Nacional de São Carlos in Chiado has you covered!

You can check show dates and ticket prices on the opera house’s website .

If you’re planning to be out late, keep an eye on the metro hours.

Lisbon’s metro system closes at 1:00 AM, which is well before most bars and clubs do–so if you’re planning to be out late, have a plan on how to get back to your hotel (usually a taxi is easy enough to find).

Some minor stations close before 1:00 AM, and while that’s unlikely to impact you in central neighborhoods it’s best to double-check when planning your night out in Lisbon.

Make dinner reservations in advance.

Restaurant reservations are the standard when dining out in Lisbon at night, so it’s best to plan ahead!

This can be as simple as calling (or even simpler these days, setting an online reservation) during lunch hours to schedule an evening visit.

If you’re headed to a particularly trendy place (especially on a weekend) or are dining with a large group, you may want to plan a bit further ahead.

It helps to be flexible with your eating schedule, too: early dinner reservations are usually easier to make than ones for later in the evening!

Don’t expect to visit a lot of official museums or attractions.

While many European cities keep their museums open after-hours, even if only for specific guided tours, that’s not something that’s typically done in Lisbon.

There are a handful of attractions that close as late as 7:00 PM, as we highlighted above, but generally speaking, sightseeing in museums and historic monuments is a daytime-only event in Lisbon.

What are the best neighborhoods for nightlife in Lisbon?

For traditional nightlife (clubs, bustling bars, etc.), Bairro Alto, Cais do Sodré, the Santa Amaro Docks on the Tagus, and Parque das Nações are popular neighborhoods.

What time do people eat dinner in Lisbon?

While dinnertime in Portugal tends to be on the early side when compared to their famously late-dining next-door neighbors in Spain, Portuguese people do still tend to eat later than those of us from the US!

8:00 PM or 9:00 PM is a standard time to eat dinner in Lisbon.

Restaurants tend to open for the evening around 7:00 PM, though they tend to be rather quiet and empty then–which can be an advantage for early diners (it’s easier to get reservations).

Of course, this all goes out the window with extremely famous or trendy restaurants–they’ll stay busy for much longer!

view of narrow streets in lisbon night

What’s the best way to get around Lisbon at night?

The best ways to get around Lisbon at night are more or less than same as during the day: walking, taxis (or Ubers), the metro, and trams are all popular options.

Keep in mind that trams stop running earlier than the metro (which closes at 1:00 AM).

The popular Tram 28 stops running around 11:00 PM on weekends and 10:30 PM on weekdays, and some other routes stop earlier.

Can you walk around Lisbon at night?

Yes, you can definitely walk around Lisbon at night!

Like any major city, you’ll want to take standard precautions (be aware of your surroundings, watch your inebriation level, don’t wander down mysterious dark alleys alone, etc.), but Lisbon is generally considered to be a very safe city.

Central neighborhoods like Alfama, Baixa, Chiado, and Bairro Alto are popular places to walk at night.

view of praca do comercio from the water at sunset in lisbon in 4 days

What are the best neighborhoods to visit during the evening in Lisbon?

If you’re looking for cozy atmospheres, historic architecture, excellent food, and fado, Alfama and Chiado are both deservedly popular with visitors, as is Baixa to an extent.

For trendy, upscale restaurants, Príncipe Real is hard to beat (it’s one of our favorite neighborhoods for evenings out in Lisbon).

Campo de Ourique and Estrela, though a bit further out, are beautiful neighborhoods with excellent restaurants.

If you’re looking for nightlife, Bairro Alto, Cais do Sodré, and the Santa Amaro Docks on the Tagus are popular.

Parque das Nações is too, though further from downtown Lisbon.

Is Lisbon lively at night?

Lisbon’s central neighborhoods are very lively at night and are generally filled with people enjoying food and music in all forms.

If you’re looking for a relaxed evening of fado music, a late-night club scene, or anything in between, Lisbon has tons of options to offer.

One thing nighttime in Lisbon really doesn’t offer much of, though?

Official tourist attractions, like museums.

When dinnertime hits, the attractions close and the relaxing and socializing begins.

14 Unmissable Things To Do In Lisbon At Night

night tour in lisbon

Best Things to do in Lisbon at Night

1) night tour of st. george’s castle.

St. George’s Castle, sat atop the highest hill in the city of Lisbon, is a must-see at any time of day. But come night, it’s an experience in itself.

The lights give the ancient structures an ethereal glow, creating a magical, otherworldly atmosphere that you wouldn’t find during the day. Plus, the city’s twinkling nightscape stretching out beneath you? It’s absolutely mesmerising!

Sao George Castle Lisbon lit up at night

The castle’s history stretches back over 2000 years, and wandering its moonlit courtyards, you’ll get a sense of the numerous cultures that have left their mark on it. From Romans to Visigoths to Moors, it’s like an open history book.

The best bit? It’s not as packed with tourists as during the day, so you might even get a bit of serenity thrown in with your history lesson.

2) Explore Bairro Alto

Lisbon nightlife wouldn’t be complete without a visit to its most famous neighbourhood, Bairro Alto.

During the day, it’s pretty quiet and unassuming – just another serene Lisbon neighborhood with narrow streets and tiled houses. But at night, it transforms into a buzzing hub of activity.

With some of the best bars in the city spilling out onto the streets, musicians playing live music and people gathering in groups chatting and laughing – the atmosphere is infectious, and you’ll find yourself drawn into the energy of it all.

Tip: Don’t miss out on trying Ginjinha, a cherry liqueur that’s a local favourite. You can find it at various bars in Bairro Alto – look for the yellow signs with cherries on them!

3) Watch a Fado Performance

Fado is a traditional Portuguese music genre that originated in Lisbon and is deeply intertwined with the local culture.

Fado performance: Woman dancing with two men on guitar

In the evening, you can catch live Fado performances at various bars and restaurants around the city. These intimate shows usually feature a singer, guitarist and sometimes even a violinist or accordionist.

The songs are usually melancholic and emotive, telling stories of love, loss and longing. Even if you don’t understand the lyrics, the passion and emotion in the music is enough to transport you into the soul of Lisbon.

Check out tickets for this live Fado Show , or  combine with dinner and a city night tour here .

4) Go Wine Tasting in the City

Lisbon’s wine scene is thriving, with lots of local wineries producing excellent wines.

You can taste these wines at most bars and restaurants around the city, but I recommend visiting one of Lisbon’s wine bars for a full tasting session.

Some popular wine bars include Winebar do Castelo, Garrafeira Alfaia, and Wine-O-Clock.

And if you want to learn more about Portuguese wines, you should consider taking  this wine tasting tour.

5) Visit Sintra at Night

The town of Sintra, located just 30 minutes outside of Lisbon, is something most visitors head to for a day. It’s kind of a a must-visit for its fairytale-like palaces and castles.

But did you know that you can also visit Sintra at night?

Sintra has quite a sordid past, and many believe that it’s haunted by ghosts and spirits.  This night tour of the town  allows you to explore some of Sintra’s most notorious haunted sites, such as the Moors Castle, Sintra Forest and the Palácio Nacional da Pena.

For a unique dining experience, head to the  Time Out Market   in the Cais do Sodré neighborhood. This fantastic food hall features over 40 different restaurants, bars and cafes offering a variety of dishes from traditional Portuguese cuisine to international delights.

I recommend taking a stroll around first before you settle on the food you want – that way you can make sure you get a taste of everything!

One of the best ways to explore Lisbon by night is to hop on a sailboat tour along the Tagus River, the lifeblood of the city. The cityscape is a treat at night, with the city’s most beautiful landmarks all lit up.

Sunset from Wooden Sailboat

Whether it’s the illuminated silhouette of the Belém Tower or the twinkling lights of the Ponte 25 de Abril (the bridge that looks like the Golden Gate Bridge in San Francisco), every view is a photo-worthy moment. A sailboat really is the perfect place to take it all in.

My favourite part about  this tour  is when the captain put the sails up and we cruised along with the wind sipping wine – it was incredibly peaceful!

Despite its lively nightlife and bustling streets, Lisbon is generally a safe city at night. As with any destination, it’s important to take precautions and be aware of your surroundings, especially in areas with large crowds or late at night.

The most common crimes in Lisbon are pickpocketing and theft, so it’s important to keep an eye on your belongings and avoid carrying large amounts of cash or valuable items. It’s also recommended to take licensed taxis and avoid walking alone in dark or isolated areas.

However, the city is well-policed and there are many security cameras in public spaces. Lisbon has a low crime rate compared to other major European cities.

Visit Tasca do Chico

Tasca do Chico

Fado is the soul of Portuguese culture expressed through music. We think one of the best venues for fado is Tasca do Chico. Keep in mind that there are two locations, so choose the one that better suits you. Tasca do Chico in Bairro Alto is perhaps a bit more livelily, but that means it’s more crowded too. Tasca do Chico in Alfama offers a more personal touch. Either way, get ready for a moving night of hauntingly beautiful singing and plenty of wine. Don’t forget to order a couple of petiscos too (Portugal’s take on tapas).

Book a moonlit tour

Book a moonlit tour

Book a night tour through some of the city’s most beautiful landmarks. There are possibilities for a range of interests and budgets. Let a local guide you toward amazing fado and dinner or drive you to the popular sites. Lisbon’s Facebook groups for expats and locals occasionally share upcoming dates for guided night tours to the main miradouros (viewpoints). It’s beautiful during the day, but Lisbon is extra special at night when the lights are twinkling and music floats down the narrow alleys.

Dance under the stars

Dance under the stars

Dance Under Stars

During the weekends, groups gather outside to dance to music like Brazilian forró and kizomba, a dance originally from Angola. On most Friday nights you will find forró at the Jardim de Lisboa Antiga in São Bento. The dancing begins at 8 pm and lasts until midnight. During the summer months, the number of events that are designed to keep locals outside skyrocket, even at night.

Visit Lisbon’s pink street

Lisbon's pink street

Once Lisbon’s “red-light district,” Rua Nova do Carvalho had a makeover and is now another trendy street filled with a myriad of bars and clubs. It is locally known as Rua Cor-de-Rosa or Pink Street because it is painted pink. Get there around sunset and stay to see how the night unravels. Here, you will have some of the city’s best and popular bars and nightclubs too.

Sit at a miradouro and take in the beauty of the city

Sit at a miradouro

At the end of a long day, sit and relax at one of the miradouros and enjoy the twinkling lights that blanket the city at night. Two of the more beautiful spots are the Miradouro de São Pedro de Alcântara in Bairro Alto, where you will see over the city to the Castelo de São Jorge and the river, and the Miradouro das Portas do Sol with views over Alfama.

Best Bars in Lisbon

Nightlife in Lisbon, like the city’s behavior in general, is lively but relaxed. Whatever you elaborate for the evening, whether it’s a hard-to-find craft beer (Cerveteca Lisboa), an elevated cocktail in a swanky speakeasy setting (Red Frog), or a glass of the country’s beloved green wine (BytheWine), there is an atmosphere to fit your impulsive mood. Here are the city’s some most appealing watering holes to tie one on, so keep our picks of Lisbon’s best bars handy:

Cerveteca Lisboa

Cerveteca Lisboa

Cerveteca Lisboa is an airy craft beer bar and shops in Principe Real that’s simply decorated: just wood, marble, and several cozy nooks. The array of bottles creates an engaging backdrop. The beers rotate; every week, a new roster of bottles highlights from the stash of more than 100 varieties, and the 14 taps change several times a day. The owners are passionate about both Portuguese and imported brews, and highlight such producers as Lisbon’s own Dois Corvos and To from Denmark.

Park

Lisbon is especially beautiful from above, and this bar, crowning a Bairro Alto parking garage, provides rapturous views. Outside, in a magical urban garden setting lush with greenery, there is crate-like patio furniture. Inside, there is a lodge-like feel with lots of wood, vintage-style chairs, and dangling white pendants. You are here for the distinctive, surprising setting, not the thought-provoking mixology, so kick back with a straightforward, breezy Mojito or margarita.

Cinco Lounge

Cinco Lounge

Low-lit and polished, Cinco is the essence of a lounge: quiet enough to chat, comfortable enough to stretch out on a pillow-accentuated banquette, and sexy enough to linger over cocktails on a date. Located in lively Príncipe Real, a wood floor and hues of green and blue provide warmth, while the glass tables and curtains shrouding floor-to-ceiling windows lend an elegant, mysterious aura. Nice cocktails – along with wine and non-boozy quaffs – have made Cinco a local favorite for 15 years. The classics are always on point here, as are the more playful drinks.

Pensão Amor

Pensão Amor

Set in a former brothel in the red light district – the name translates roughly to “pension of love” – Pensão Amor still bears the imprint of its bordello roots, what with the red wallpaper and ceiling graced with images of cavorting naked men. The bar’s jumbled array of photographs – many of them fittingly seductive – and tchotchkes create a kitschy element, balanced by chandeliers, drapes, and velvety tufted chairs. The menu consists of classics like the French 75 and Boulevardier, as well as original cocktails like the Bing Qing, made with ginseng tea – infused Beefeater 24 gin, ginger, and lychee.

By the Wine

By the Wine

By the Wine’s arched ceiling is unquestionably its most striking design feature: row after row of green-glass wine bottles that reinforce the raison d’être of this bar in the trendy Chiado neighborhood, which belongs to the winemaking empire José Maria da Fonseca. As its name implies, wines by the glass – all from Portugal – are the name of the game here. There are also plenty of bottles. Try wines like Domini from the Douro and Puro Talha from the Alentejo. Several thousand bottles are up for grabs in the shop. Come to get a good grasp of the thrilling Portuguese wine scene and try some equally impressive food in a buzzy atmosphere that puts the spotlight on one of Portugal’s oldest wine producers.

Café Klandestino

Café Klandestino

Indeed a cozy place for people looking to get off the compressed path, its concept is tied to the era when coffee was a hot commodity for smugglers (hence the name). There’s coffee in almost every cocktail. Try the Mojito Raiano (rum infused with coffee, ginger beer, vanilla, and passion fruit), or go for something different and try a Padrón pepper margarita (hibiscus, triple sec and tequila). Remember to thank, bartender and co-owner, for his creativity.

Best Bar Restaurant in Lisbon

Meals are not rushed in Portugal. It is absolutely regular to sit at a restaurant for two to three hours. Before exploring all of the fun things to do in Lisbon at night, take your time to taste the local eateries. Alfama, Chiado, Bairro Alto, and Príncipe Real are four popular neighborhoods where you will find an overabundance of Bar Restaurants. You can skip the usual tourist path by heading to any special one or can select some of the best Bar Restaurant given below:

The Wine Cellar

The Wine Cellar

The Wine Cellar, a Cais do Sodré neighborhood joint, is a huge hit with locals who love wine paired with elevated twists on Portuguese cooking. The expansive wine list reads like who’s-who of Portuguese producers. Reasonable prices make it easy to experiment – you could spend your night tasting your way through such producers as Vértice, Dona Paterna, and Quinta da Leda. The food here is as much a draw as the wine; try the tuna loin with sweet potato or rump steak with port sauce.

Rio Maravilha

Rio Maravilha

No matter how many times you go up to the terrace at Rio Maravilha, the view will make your chin drop. The place has always been known for its relaxed mood, fit for dancing or drinking; now, it’s new kitchen brigade presents a strong cocktail and snacks menu served outdoors. You can have a brandy sour with grapefruit and coriander to go with pork cheeks and smoked cottage cheese, or a raspberry and pop rocks margarita to go with sweet potato chips.

Bota Sal

The team behind beloved seaside Sal Restaurante in Comporta has finally opened Bota Sal, a more youthful Lisbon offshoot in the Estrela district. Lined with seafoam green corrugated metal walls and weathered wood chairs, space channels its salty older sibling while delivering a more modern take on maritime cuisine. Try the sirloin steak, which comes with a house-made sauce and French fries; there is also an octopus salad, deep-water rose shrimp from the Algarve, and cuttlefish with bacon strips and coriander. For dessert, go for the lavender-infused milk custard.

The Food Temple

The Food Temple

The nourishing dishes at this temple to vegetarian cooking in the up-and-coming Mouraria district go a long way in undoing a weekend of indulgences. The Food Temple, Lisbon’s altar of vegetarian food, is located on a silent street in the slowly (but steadily) up-and-coming Mouraria district. Outside, there is seating and sufficient of tables; inside, the intimate, bohemian-chic space is marked by a colorful chalkboard menu and a kitchen draped with Nepali prayer flags. A small menu changes regularly, but it is always got hearty vegetarian soups, tapas, and mains, including warm quinoa salad with pistachios and goji berries and homemade polenta with artichokes and mushrooms.

Boa-Bao

It’s worth the inevitable wait for a seat at Boa-Bao, a popular restaurant in Chiado where the menu reads like a love letter to Asian flavors and recipes, from Japan to Laos. The eclectic food includes wok stir-fries, spicy soups, and an entire section devoted to the ever-popular gua-bao, or Taiwanese steamed buns (opt for the Peking duck, stuffed with hoisin, cucumber, and spring onion). An expansive selection of curries lets you compare and contrast those from different countries, including Malaysia and Thailand.

Feitoria

Located in the Altis Belem Hotel, the glamorous, Michelin-starred Feitoria is a destination in itself. Sure, there is an epic view of the river, but it is the gold-leafed panel (a replica of one at the National Museum of Ancient Art) that commands all the attention. The menu leans heavily on produce – Kombu, turnip, and smoked-beetroot or pigeon, cherries, and foie gras – with the chefs transforming ingredients into edible works of art. The restaurant also runs a visiting-chef program with talent from around the world.

Best Nightclub in Lisbon

The Portuguese capital is full of places to have great fun-nights. Clubs are plentiful and very busy for a little city compared to other European capitals. Nightclubs are mainly located in three districts: Alcântara (on the docks and in the area), Cais do Sodré (around Nova do Carvalho Street and on the docks) and Santos (on the docks and in the district around Avenida 24 de Julho). There are so many great things to do in Lisbon at night, whether you love dancing or prefer laid-back socializing with a few close friends. Multicultural, artistic, and progressive, it is possible for anyone to find fun things to do. Here are some of our recommended night-time haunts and activities:

Ministerium Club

Ministerium Club

Opened in 2012, the Ministerium Club is located on the Praça do Comércio, in the former premises of the Portuguese Minister of Finances, hence the noun of the club. Many worldwide known DJs have already played their music in that nightclub such as Ricardo Villalobos, Carl Craig, Maya Jane Coles or Miss Kittin. Obviously, famous Portuguese mixmasters also come to this nightclub. Be careful, you should be stylish and sleek if you want to go inside! The bouncers are known to be harsh and very exigent.

LUX – The staple of Lisbon

LUX – The staple of Lisbon

One of the well-known nightclubs in Lisbon for many years, you must probably have already heard about his club without having gone to Lisbon. Located on the docks of Santa Apolónia, the terraces of the nightclub provide a beautiful view of the Tagus. National and international DJs and artists with different musical styles performed at the Lux. Beware, it is very hard to go inside, especially during the evenings of a rush. Make sure to be well-dressed and no to come only with men.

Lust in Rio

Lust in Rio

Lust in Rio is a multi-purpose establishment, located on the docks of Cais do Sodré. On the first floor, you will find the SushiRio restaurant, with a modern and eclectic decoration. On the terrace, there is an amazing view of the Tagus and you will be served traditional and fusion Sushis. Every evening, the program is different from DJs, instigators, and themes that change all over the year.

The Docks Club

The Docks Club

Located in the former warehouses of the docks of Alcântara, the Docks Club exists for many years and has always been successful. Very busy by the Angolan community (except on Tuesday), it is a perfect place to dance on African kinds of music such as Kizomba, samba or African-house. The program also plans hip hop and R&B. The inevitable and very busy Ladies Nights take place on Tuesday nights.

Barrio Latino

Barrio Latino

The Barrio Latino was in the district of Parque das Nações but has recently moved to the docks of Santos. This is one the reference nightclubs in Lisbon if you want to dance on kizomba, salsa, other Latin kinds of music or African rhythms. So this nightclub is an absolute and right place for you.

Music Box

This highly regarded live music venue champions the alternative music scene and regularly hosts local bands as well as more established World Music acts and visiting DJs. True to form, the club tends not to advertise itself and the frontage set under a bridge in the city’s Cais do Sodre district is totally bereft of signage or neon. Ask a local for directions, or check the numerous flyers posted up on nearby walls. The range and style of music performed here are refreshingly diverse and includes drum ‘n’ bass, electronic soul and fado, indie rock, hip-hop, jazz, dance, and reggae. Music Box also showcases new media events like podcasts and video. Occasionally, non-musical nights are arranged when poetry is read.

Let us conclude the topic here; we had a brief introduction of Lisbon City along with highlighting some of its prominent norms, culture, and nightlife. We also went through different activities and places to enjoy the nightlife of the City, Musical venues, Bars, Restaurants and Nightclubs as well. Such activities provide a great source of entertainment for tourists and locals as well. Moreover, such activities also help in understanding the exact cultural norms of a city. As already elaborated the city is relatively small and dense, the nightlife of Lisbon is mainly based in its three districts: Alcântara, Cais do Sodré and Santos where city’s best pubs & bars are located. These pubs & bars are truly satisfying the desire of thirsty visitors where you can enjoy your cocktail with the mesmerizing architectural beauty of the hand-crafted bars and their decors. You don’t feel any hunger during your trip that is why we also suggested some of the finest restaurants in the city that offer exotic and delicious food along with your favorite drinks. You can really enjoy the taste of good food along with some great booze.

And lastly, we went through comprehensive options of Nightclubs that offered great music with some delightfully exotic choices for drinks and cocktail that will definitely delight your overall experience at Lisbon City. All of the aforementioned experiences will work together to make your tour really memorable. A perfect and balanced blend of the above-identified activities can actually boost your experience and make your trip unbelievably unforgettable for you.

Lisbon is culturally rich with many historic sites and museums. It might sound boring to teenagers, but some are really cool! There is always something going on in this lively and vibrant city. Be sure to check out any special events, festivals, or music performances that are scheduled during your visit.

How to Get Around in Lisbon

The best way to explore Lisbon is by foot. However, there are plenty of steep hills throughout the city, so it might take longer to walk from one place to the next.

We had good luck using Uber if we needed it, but there are also plenty of taxis and tuk tuk drivers to take you to your destination.

There is also a hop-on hop-off bus tour  for transportation with several routes through the city. It’s a great option for saving tired feet. No matter how you choose to explore Lisbon, we are sure the whole family will enjoy Portugal’s capital city.

1. The Oceanarium

The  Oceanarium  is one of the most visited places in Lisbon amongst families. It’s one of the largest indoor aquariums in Europe, and it’s located in Parque das Nações. The aquarium features a central tank that holds an incredible 5 million liters of saltwater!

The aquarium is designed to represent the open ocean, and you can discover many unique species of marine life in the water. Keep an eye out for rays, sunfish, sharks, and fish from around the world. There are dedicated spots where otters and penguins play and do their shenanigans.

If there are younger children in your family there are plenty of educational opportunities, and the Oceanário de Lisboa is a highlight for many visitors.

2. Go surfing

If you or your kids prefer to be in the ocean, why not try surfing lessons? Lisbon is very close to The Atlantic Ocean, and you can find several surf schools along the coast. Do you know how to surf? You can also rent your gear here.

Ericeira is a famous surf town, but Praia do Guincho is closer to Lisbon. Other popular surf spots are Praia da Adraga and Costa da Caparica.

Lisbon’s surf season runs from September to May, but that means the waves are also higher. The surf in Lisbon can be challenging during this time, so it’s best for intermediate to advanced surfers.

Did you know some of the highest waves surfed are in Nazaré Portugal? Between October and March, you can expect ginormous waves here, and it is a must-see if you like surfing.

In summer, the waves are smaller and perfect for learning how to surf. The ocean will also be slightly warmer!

The surf camps offer lessons and coaching for all levels of surfers. They also usually provide all the necessary equipment, including wetsuits and boards, and can arrange transportation to the best surf spots.

3. Take a day trip to Sintra

Sintra is a picturesque town located just outside of Lisbon, and you can easily reach it in 40 minutes by car. You can also use public transportation to reach Sintra from Lisbon by taking the metro from Rossio Train Station to Sintra at the end of the route.

If you want someone else to do all of the transportation, consider  booking a local guide  to take you to Sintra.

Sintra was a popular destination for Portuguese royalty and aristocracy, and the place is famous for its many palaces and mansions.

There are many historic landmarks, including the Moorish Castle, the Pena Palace, and the Quinta da Regaleira. In addition to the stunning architecture, there are fabulous gardens that you can visit.

Sintra is located within the Sintra-Cascais Natural Park, which is also an excellent place for hiking. Along the coast of Sintra, you’ll discover some of the best beaches close to Lisbon.

If you’re up for a coastal hike, Praia da Ursa is one of the area’s most beautiful beaches! However, Praia da Adraga and Praia Grande are a lot easier to reach.

4. Visit the LX Factory

In the Alcântara neighborhood of Lisbon, you can visit the LX Factory . This complex was once a textile manufacturing factory but has become a cultural and creative hub. It’s a popular spot for all ages due to the many restaurants, shops, street art, and design studios.

Check out the sculpture Bumblebee by Bordalo II, visit the coolest bookstore  Ler Devagar  or discover the fabulous shops. There are often events such as concerts, DJ nights, and cultural festivals. So from early morning until night, there is always something to do here!

5. Check out the street art

Speaking of street art, Lisbon has plenty of it! It’s scattered throughout the city, and a  guided tour   will ensure you’ll get to see the most important displays.

Bordalo II is one of Lisbon’s favorite artists, and he creates sculptures and murals from waste. Discover the artworks of Raposa, Big Raccoon, Monkey, Pelicans, and Iberian Lynx in the city. Vhills is another prominent artist with works all over Lisbon. Brazilian artists Os Gemeos, Italy’s BLU, and Spain’s SAM3 all left a mark on the city!

Other well-known works are from Pichiavo at Rua de Santa Apolonia, the revolutionary mural by Shepard Fairey on Rua Natalia Correia, and chief Raoni Metuktire by Eduardo Kobra on Rua Alberto José Pessoa.

6. Take a ride on Tram 28

Tram 28 is an icon in Lisbon, and a ride on the historic cable car is a favorite of many! The tram has been in operation since 1914 and is one of the last remaining traditional streetcar routes in Lisbon. It was originally used to transport goods and people, but today it is a popular tourist attraction.

Unfortunately, the queue can be long, but there is also an option to take an old historical tram tour instead. The tram ride goes through some of the most picturesque neighborhoods in Lisbon! If you have a public transport card, you pay a little less, but it’s public transport, so you pay per ride. There are, however, many interesting points where you can disembark.

Examples are Miradouro da Graça, Sé Cathedral , Miradouro de Santa Luzia, and Igreja de São Vicente de Fora, which are all located in the Alfama district.

The endpoint of the train is on the other side of town, close to Jardim da Estrela. While Tram 28 is a classic Lisbon experience, it’s not the only way to see the city’s historic neighborhoods. Walking tours, bike rentals, and other forms of transportation are also available, offering a more personalized and flexible way to explore the city’s many sights and sounds.

7. Discover Alfama

Alfama  is the oldest neighborhood in Lisbon. It’s also a charming place with many narrow streets and tourist highlights. On top of the hill, you can visit Castelo de São Jorge (St. George’s Castle). You can walk along the castle walls to enjoy some of the best views over Lisbon! The surrounding park is full of peacocks, and around the castle are many beautiful streets.

Besides the castle, there are many other viewing platforms throughout the city. From Miradouro das Portas do Sol and Miradouro de Santa Luzia, you enjoy a stunning view over Alfama and the river Tagus.

Discover the small streets full of azulejo tiles and enjoy a night of Fado. Alfama is the birthplace of Fado, a traditional Portuguese music style that is often described as melancholic and soulful. There are many Fado bars and restaurants where you can experience this unique cultural tradition.

On Tuesdays and Saturdays, it’s fun to visit the flea markets at Feira da Ladra. And if you’re in Lisbon in June, Alfama is THE place to be. The Santo António is celebrated throughout Lisbon, but most celebrations are in this neighborhood. There are parades, street parties, and a lot of sardines!

8. Fun museums to visit in Lisbon with teenagers

Although it doesn’t rain often, having a backup plan for your family vacation is always a good idea. Lisbon has a lot of museums, especially in the Belém neighborhood! Some of the museums that teens might like in this area include –

  • Berardo Collection Museum (modern art)
  • The Museum of Art, Architecture, and Technology (MAAT)
  • The National Coach Museum (a collection of horse-drawn carriages)
  • The Maritime Museum
  • Calouste Gulbenkian Planetarium
  • National Archaeological Museum.

A relatively new museum in Belém is  Quake – The Lisbon Earthquake Experience . This one is a bit more serious, in the sense that it’s about the destroying 1755 earthquake that hit Lisbon and many other places in Portugal.

You travel back in time to relive Lisbon’s most dramatic and transformative event and learn more about the history and science of earthquakes. It’s an immersive experience with simulators, video mapping, and interactive 4D technology. This is sure to be a favorite for teens!

Belém is also home to several UNESCO World Heritage Sites, including the Jerónimos Monastery which dates to the 16th century, and Belem Tower (Torre de Belem) which was a departure point for many of Portugal’s famous early explorers, including Magellan and Vasco da Gama. While you’re exploring the area, be sure to stop at Pasteis de Belem, which has been baking the famous pasteis de nata (Portuguese custard tarts) since 1837.

If you need another place to explore on a rainy day in Lisbon, check out the  3D Fun Art Museum Lisboa . As the name implies, everything here is in 3D, which is great for pictures! You can take pictures upside down and in distorted rooms with illusions. Your imagination can roam freely here! It’s a fun activity for all families!

9. Ride the Santa Justa Lift to the Bairro Alto

The Santa Justa Lift, an iconic elevator towering over the city, offers breathtaking panoramic views of central Lisbon and beyond. This is the easiest way to get between the Baixa district and the Bairro Alto. A ride is included in a 24-hour Lisbon transportation ticket.

Once you’ve arrived at the top, walk to the Carmo Convent and the convent ruins. This building was mostly destroyed in 1755 by the deadliest earthquake in Lisbon’s history. Teens will be fascinated by the remains of this building with its gigantic arches and columns. There’s also a small archaeology museum on-site that’s included in the ticket price.

10. Outdoor Activities on the Water

If your teens want more than surfing, you can visit Lisbon beaches such as Praia de Carcavelos, Praia do Tamariz, and Praia das Avencas.

Cascais is also a lovely beach town to visit, and from Lisbon, you can travel here easily by train. You can also take the ferry across the Tagus River and see the Christ statue in Almada. There is a fabulous view over Lisbon and the Ponte 25 de Abril bridge from this point.

From here, you can easily reach Costa da Caparica, with many more beaches. Along these coastal towns are opportunities to try kayaking, kitesurfing, and canoeing. You can even  book a sailing tour  on the Tagus to enjoy a relaxing view from the water. Most ships depart from Belém, and a  sunset tour  is especially magical.

11. Try all the food!

Portuguese cuisine does not disappoint and teens will love a  Lisbon food tour  that allows them to try bite-size dishes of local favorites. If you don’t have time for a tour, be sure to make a stop at Time Out Market in the Mercado da Ribeira. This food hall showcases some of the best chefs in the city, and teens will love the variety of dishes. Our teens loved it so much, we ate there for dinner two out of three nights!

Lisbon is the perfect spot for a vacation with teens. With beaches, a rich history, unique museums, and delicious food, it’s sure to be a trip they will never forget!
