Set sail from Dover
Prepare for a truly unforgettable christmas cruise.
Wave farewell to Dover's white cliffs as we set our course north towards the coast of Norway and its magical, snow-covered landscape.
Don't forget to pick up your complimentary expedition jacket, before stretching your sea legs and getting to know MS Maud – your cosy expedition ship for the next two weeks.
After your first delicious meal at sea, you'll meet our Expedition Team, many of whom grew up in the places we'll be visiting. Afterwards, get comfortable in the Explorer Lounge & Bar and watch the world go by from the panoramic windows. Your festive Arctic adventure is truly underway.
Celebrate Christmas at sea
Enjoy a traditional festive feast.
As we head towards the Norwegian coastline, your Expedition Team will host talks and answer your questions about the places, Christmas traditions, people and natural phenomena we're likely to encounter.
Norwegians celebrate Christmas on the 24th rather than the 25th December ; and the 23rd is ' Lille Juleaften' or Christmas Eve. Families get together and may weave julekurver – heart-shaped paper decorations, build gingerbread houses, decorate the tree, or eat risengrynsgrøt – a sweet, spiced rice pudding.
On the 24th, Norwegians enjoy a traditional festive feast of rich oxtail soup, fish terrine, reindeer with lingonberry marmalade, stewed cloudberries, and kransekake – a Norwegian confectionery made of almonds. You might get a taste of these dishes on board today. God jul to all!
Christmas in Nordfjorden
Enjoy the glacial beauty of nordfjorden.
Your Christmas expedition cruise continues as we sail into picturesque Nordfjorden on the 25th. Today, we'll celebrate nature in all its glory. We'll pass Hornelen, Europe's highest sea cliff.
Nestled along the fjord are old fishing communities, such as Loen. We'll land here around noon and take the Loen Skylift to the top of Mount Hoven – climbing over 3,300 feet in just five minutes. The views to Mount Skåla and Lake Lo in the east, and Jostedalsbreen Glacier and Olden to the south, are unforgettable.
You can also try optional winter activities, including snowshoeing or sledding on the mountain, and hopefully kayaking on the fjord if time and weather allow. It'll certainly be a Christmas to remember!
Towards the Arctic Circle
Relax as we head into the arctic and the auroral zone.
It's the start of Romjulen , the quieter period between Christmas and New Year’s Eve. Many Norwegians head to the slopes to go skiing or sledding. We’ll be headed to the famous Lofoten Islands and into the Arctic Circle.
Your day at sea is an opportunity to sit back and take in everything around you. Head for a soak in the hot tubs and admire the scenery as we sail through Helgeland county. Can you pick out the Seven Sisters mountains or Torghatten Mountain with the natural hole right through its centre?
We're now in the Auroral Zone, so look out for your first sighting of the Northern Lights.
Idyllic Reine
One of the world's most spectacular destinations.
A majestic wall of mountains signal your arrival in stunning Lofoten. The breathtaking scenery is a masterpiece of jutting snowcapped mountains, sheltered bays, untouched beaches and fishing villages.
You’ll spend the day in the picture-perfect fishing village of Reine Its iconic red fishing huts, or rorbuer , dotted against granite peaks, make this one of Norway's most photographed landscapes. If the Northern Lights are active, it will only add to the magic.
Your included activity for the day is a trip to Å, one of the best preserved traditional fishing villages in Norway. You'll visit the Norwegian Fishing Village Museum, and learn how fishing has shaped life of local communities here over the centuries.
Arctic Alta, Aurora city
Learn about the northern lights and go stargazing.
Lying 70º north of the Arctic Circle, Alta lies directly beneath the Auroral Oval. We’ll arrive here in the early afternoon and plan to stay past midnight to stargaze and watch for the aurora in Alta’s skies. If conditions are right, you could be in for quite a show. You'll discover more about the aurora at an interactive exhibition in the modern Northern Lights Cathedral and find out how Norwegian scientist Kristian Birkeland established Alta as an epicentre for ground-breaking Northern Lights research .
The indigenous, semi-nomadic S ámi people live in the Finnmark region. Your Expedition Team may give a lecture today about Sámi culture. To get you started, Merry Christmas in Sámi is ‘Buorit Juovllat!’
Tromsø the Arctic gateway
Polar exploration heritage in the arctic capital.
Our Christmas expedition cruise continues to capital of the Arctic, Tromsø. Look out for humpback whales – your Expedition Team will let you know of any sightings nearby.
We’ll arrive around lunchtime and spend the rest of the day exploring its fascinating history, culture and architecture. With its huge stained glass window, be sure to visit the Arctic Cathedral, one of the most striking landmarks in Tromsø.
Discover the city’s hunting and exploration heritage on your included Polar Museum tour. Before we leave, drop in on the world’s northernmost brewery, Mack Bryggeri. Or try some seasonal julekake , ‘Norwegian Hole Cake’, made with raisins and orange peel.
Historik Narvik
Discover one of the world's most northerly towns.
Our Christmas cruise continues to Narvik, 150 miles inside the Arctic Circle and surrounded by three fjords. Take time to explore the galleries, shops, and restaurants – specialising in local seafood and reindeer meat.
An important port, Narvik was a strategic target for Germany during World War II. You'll visit Narvik War Museum and learn about the Allied troops' liberation of the town.
Then ride the cable car to the top of Mount Narvik, or go on optional excursion hikes, snowshoeing or kayaking on the fjord. In the evening, we'll look out for Northern Lights as we cross Vestfjorden.
New Year at sea
Celebrate the new year expedition style.
You'll spend New Year’s Eve and New Year's Day at sea. Over the next two days, we may go off the beaten track to wherever takes our fancy. There are many islands and fjords to discover in this region. We'll go ashore in expedition boats and look for wildlife in their natural habitat.
Activities and landings will be picked at the discretion of the Expedition Team, and they’ll draw on their in-depth knowledge of the area to bring you to the most exhilarating and naturally beautiful locations.
We aim to find calm waters for our special New Year’s Eve dinner. Enjoy caviar, king crab, and beef, salmon or nut roast Wellington. And as the New Year arrives, expect fireworks and – hopefully – the Northern Lights. Spend New Year's Day relaxing in the hot tub or Explorer Lounge or enjoy the sea air.
Charming Bergen
Take a festive stroll through norway's old capital.
Surrounded by mountains and the sea, Bergen is one of Norway’s most beautiful and historic cities, with cobbled streets and alleys waiting to be explored.
Enjoy a walk around the UNESCO-listed Bryggen district and discover its colourful wooden wharfs dating back to the 18th century. You'll feel like you have this charming city all to yourself, with many shops still closed for Christmas and the decorated streets much quieter than usual.
As today's included activity, you'll take the funicular railway up to the top of Mount Fløyen. It takes just six minutes and you'll be rewarded with amazing views over the city, lit up with colourful Christmas lights.
Cosy Egersund
A beautiful town of wooden houses and ancient runes.
We arrive in Egersund in the morning. You’ll love the cosy vibe of Egersund, with its brightly coloured, wooden houses and narrow streets decked out in fairy lights.
Wander around the beautifully decorated shops full of handicrafts, then pop into a café for a glass of hot gløgg (mulled wine). A visit to the local chocolate and ice cream factory is a possibility. We recommend the gingerbread ice cream.
People have lived here since the Stone Age and you can even find ancient runes carved into rocks nearby. For panoramic views, hike to the viewpoint at Varberg, a short walk from the centre.
Homeward bound
Relive festive highlights from a spellbinding adventure.
As you cruise back across the North Sea to Dover, you'll have time to relax and look back on the experiences you've enjoyed on your Christmas expedition. Like standing in awe under the Northern Lights or the spectacular scenery of the Lofoten Islands.
Your Expedition Team will be on hand as always to answer any questions on all the wonderful places you've visited. Continue the festive mood in the Explorer Bar and swap stories with other guests, or enjoy a relaxing soak in the hot tubs or the views from the panoramic sauna.
Arrival in Dover
Wonderful memories of norway at christmas.
Your festive expedition cruise of the Norwegian fjords draws to a close. We'll pass the white cliffs of Dover in the early morning, and after breakfast it's time to head ashore.
Dover is the gateway to the English countryside, so we'd recommend taking time to visit Dover Castle and the Roman lighthouse – reputedly the UK’s oldest building. You can also tour the underground hospital and secret WWII tunnels beneath the castle.
As you leave, we hope you'll carry with you unforgettable memories of coastal Norway, the Northern Lights and a magical festive adventure.

You will be able to not only learn about it but experience it up close during trips and excursions, either to capital cities like Oslo, Stockholm or Reykjavik, but also to smaller towns such as Trondheim in Norway, or Akureyri in Iceland. How well do you know the United Kingdom? If you need a plan for your 2024 vacation, there are many hidden treasures within Great Britain and Ireland, the only thing you need to do is jump on an MSC cruise around the UK and discover these local attractions. The ports for the British Isles cruises act as gateways to other cities and you can even book a Norway fjords cruise or other Norway cruises in 2024. For starters, you could begin your cruise from Southampton, a port city that has always been a bright spot for cultural exchange. Why not take a stroll down its medieval town walls? During a stop at South Queensferry in Edinburgh, marvel at the beauty of this city. Visit the castle for a look at the Scottish crown jewels or amble down the Royal Mile for a bit of shopping or a cup of tea. If you are lucky, you might get to experience –or hear—the Edinburgh Military Tattoo, the Art Festival or the International Book Festival. Other capital cities included in an MSC Baltic cruise are Riga, Stockholm, Copenhagen or Helsinki, an up-and-coming destination where you can explore Suomenlinna, an 18th century fortress that is also a UNESCO World Heritage Site. If UNESCO World Heritage Sites do intrigue you, or you simply appreciate history and culture, choose a Baltic cruise and enjoy the beauty of Visby, on the island of Gotland. You will be charmed by Visby’s botanical gardens and its beautiful medieval town center. Don’t forget to visit the 12th century St. Mary’s Cathedral. There is much more to see and more hidden gems to discover in Northern Europe! What are you waiting for?

Our Northern Europe cruises have stops at Icelandic ports such as Reykjavik and Akureyri, where you can dock and experience the beauty of this unique country. When you set sail for your Iceland stopover and first dock in Reykjavik, don’t miss an excursion to Þingvellir National Park where you can see Iceland’s largest lake or head southeast on the island and to find Strokkur, the only regularly erupting geyser. In Akureyri, you can choose excursions such as Godafoss, a waterfall approximately 40 feet tall, the pseudo-craters of Skutustaðir, and Dimmurborgir, an incredible labyrinth of lava. From waterfalls to craters and geysers, it has something for everyone. Explore beyond Scandinavia with an Iceland stopover on an MSC cruise!
How much does a Baltic cruise cost?
There’s a Baltic cruise waiting for you, independently of your budget. MSC cruises offer a wide range and selection of experiences, which will determine the overall price. Factors to consider are different cabin types and accommodation preferences, the excursions you book, as well as the numerous on-board services and experiences we offer. The earlier you book your cruise, the better the price you will find. Although, you can also take advantage of our special promotions available at different times throughout the year. You can also come across a bargain through our flash sales and last-minute deals. What are you waiting for?
Can you see the Northern Lights on a Baltic cruise?
The Arctic viewing season for the Northern Lights on a Baltic cruise is from late September to late March or early April. However, the best months to view the Northern Lights are December through March, when skies are darkest due to the darker winter days and the higher probability of clear skies. Keep in mind that while it is possible to catch a glimpse of the Aurora Borealis in places like southern Finland, you will have a much better chance if you choose a cruise that travels farther north into Scandinavia.
What is the best time to go on a Baltic cruise?
The Baltic Sea is characterized by seasonality. That is to say there is a large difference in the weather depending on the month. Winters are long, cold and dark, while summers are short and relatively warm. Although, you can still experience some weather changes and spots of showers on a Baltic cruise in the summer. Because the Baltic Sea is located between the cooler winds of the North Atlantic and the harsher continental European climate, conditions and temperatures can vary greatly throughout the year. This means summers can be warm and relatively dry, with some chances of precipitation. MSC cruises go to the Baltics when the weather is best, although you should take into consideration how variable the conditions can be when packing your suitcases. Discover a unique part of Europe with MSC and find your Baltic cruise for the summer!
What do you wear on a Baltic cruise?
The best time to go on a Baltic cruise is in the late spring or summer, seasons when the temperatures range between 53ºF and 72ºF. With such a temperature range as that, you will be able to wear anything from shorts and a T-shirt to jeans with a hoodie or windbreaker. We recommend you choose a varied wardrobe and add plenty of layers to your outfits for your cruise, just in case. Also, even though the precipitation rates are lower in May, June and July, we would still advise you to pack a rain jacket along with you, because you might encounter light showers during your cruise. Another detail you might want to consider that the Baltic States experience long daylight hours, especially during the months of May, June, July and August. So, remember to pack your sleep mask if you think you’ll need it. Go on an incredible adventure with an MSC Baltic cruise.

Top Northern Europe FAQs
What is the best time of year to take a cruise to Northern Europe?
Northern Europe is enchanting at any time of year, but May to September is the best period. You’ll enjoy long, bright days and almost 24 hours of daylight in June. Summer for the locals is a time of festivals, exploring the countryside, and enjoying al-fresco dining.
How long are typical itineraries?
Our Northern Europe itineraries vary from seven to 14 nights, with a vast range of choices, whether you’re looking for a week in the Norwegian fjords or a longer itinerary that explores the capitals of the Baltic. You can even sail from Southampton, England deep into the Arctic Circle, to Norway’s Nordkapp.
Are there any specific visa requirements for cruising to countries in Northern Europe?
It is the responsibility of each guest to identify and obtain all required travel documents and have them available at the pier when necessary. Before leaving home, take a few minutes to familiarize yourself with the required travel documents you will be asked to provide prior to boarding the ship. You’ll find more information here .
The vast majority of countries visited by European cruises do not require a visa. From 2024, Americans, Canadians, and British citizens will be required to register for the new European Travel Information and Authorization System (ETIAS) to enter 30 European countries.
This will be easy to apply for, inexpensive, and is simply a pre-authorization system similar to the ESTA that Europeans need to travel to the U.S. and Canada. Once you have the ETIAS, it will be valid for three years. You should make sure you have at least six months before your passport expires, too.
What kind of weather can be expected during a Northern Europe cruise?
You can expect all kinds of summer weather, from bright sunshine to occasional mist, rain, and drizzle. Evenings can be cool. Come prepared for all eventualities, with light layers, a waterproof jacket, and sturdy shoes.
What types of excursions are available?
We offer excursions for a range of interests, from guided hikes to scenic boat rides, in-depth visits to castles and museums, and immersive explorations of local food and drink. Whether you’re traveling as a couple, an individual, a family, or a group of friends, you’ll find a fantastic range of cultural and experiential activities in every port.
Are there any cultural or language tips I should know before cruising to Northern Europe?
On your travels in Northern Europe, you will experience a number of different cultures, currencies, cuisines, and languages. It’s important, and fun, to acknowledge these differences and learn a little about the historical events that have shaped each destination. English is widely spoken in Scandinavian countries, especially in the service industry, although it’s always appreciated if you learn a few words of the local language.
Prepare to encounter a number of different currencies on your travels; Finland, Estonia, and the Republic of Ireland use the Euro, but other countries have their own currencies. U.S. dollars are not necessarily accepted, although credit cards are widely used, and there are plenty of ATMs.
