Norwegian Cruise Line iConcierge

norwegian cruise texting app

Staying in touch during a cruise can be a dicey proposition. In the not-too-distant past, the only way to communicate with family back home was through the ship's satellite telephone system. But prohibitive fees (usually around $7.00 per minute) made that option impracticable at best.

International calling booth businesses at foreign piers offered much lower prices. But, language barriers and long lines (all those crew members eager to call home) detracted from their appeal.

A Little Research

Everyone has a cell phone now. But not everyone takes the time to research their carrier's international calling plans . If not, they're in for a rude surprise when those international roaming charges kick in. If passengers try to use their cell phones while at sea (assuming they find a signal) they can face a double whammy. Both the cell phone carrier and in some cases, the onboard communications company, charge fees.

Skype and other internet-based services are one potential alternative. Callers still, however, incur charges for onboard Wi-Fi, which can be prohibitively priced and slow on mainstream cruise lines.

Norwegian Cruise Line passengers can take advantage of the Norwegian iConcierge App. It's a free download for Apple, Android, and Windows smartphones.

With the App, passengers can use their smartphones to interact with onboard systems from anywhere on the ship. It's a way to access real-time information about everything taking place on board. And let's face it, cruise vacations are a hotbed of activity. Lines want passengers out and about, enjoying shows, shops, demonstrations and everything else they can come up with.

Tips for Using iConcierge

If you're planning to take advantage of the iConcierge features, it's important to download the App before you leave port on Day 1 of the cruise.

The App works exclusively onboard each ship’s Wi-Fi network. So, enable the Wi-Fi connection on your phone. It's a good idea also to switch your device to airplane mode. That way, you'll avoid cellular roaming charges from your carrier.

Connect to the ship’s Wi-Fi network by searching for “Norwegian_Internet_Ship Name,” and then register using your stateroom number.

To call or text, select the phone or messenger icon on the App's home screen. You have to choose first a Phone & Messenger package on the Rates tab. The package will give you unlimited calls and texts to other iConcierge registered devices for one flat rate.

You'll also have a unique onboard number to use with iConcierge. It's located on the Contacts tab, at the top of the phone screen. Other registered mobile devices in your stateroom are automatically added to your contacts. You can also add other guests with a registered mobile device.

The unique phone number is what you'll use to make and receive phone calls and text messages. Provide this number to friends and family back home or other onboard guests using the Norwegian iConcierge App:

  • To make a call, simply dial the extension you're trying to reach. Or to make an on-ship call, dial 1 + the area code and number. Or add the number to your Contacts tab.
  • To send a text, click on the Messenger bubble next to a Contact on the Contacts tab.

The communications problem has traditionally been one of the least-favorite features of cruising. The industry recognizes that, and most major lines have rolled out apps to make things easier for passengers to keep in touch.

How to Text on a Cruise Ship for Free in 2024

Most people today use texting as an easy and convenient way to keep in touch with friends and family. But can you text on a cruise ship? You can—but it’s often very expensive. Here’s everything you need to know about text messaging on a cruise ship, and how to text on your next cruise for free.

There aren’t any cell towers out at sea, so cruise ships use an at-sea provider, like Cellular At Sea or Wireless Maritime Services , for ship-to-shore and mobile phone service.

When you’re on a cruise, you can connect to the maritime provider’s network to send and receive text messages and make phone calls. But it’s an expensive service that the cruise line doesn’t cover—even if you only connect to it accidentally!

But there are much better (and cheaper) ways to text on a cruise , both on the ship and while you’re in port. If you’d rather not return home to a giant phone bill, I’m sharing my best tips and tricks on texting during a cruise. And yes—I’ll tell you exactly how you can text for free!

norwegian cruise texting app

Sending SMS text messages on a cruise ship

SMS text messages are sent via mobile network, so you should be able to send and receive text-only messages in your phone’s native message app anywhere your phone has service.

After you leave port and your cruise ship is about nine to twelve miles out at sea, the ship will connect to the at-sea provider. If you don’t put your phone in airplane mode before this point, once your phone loses the closest cell tower signal it will automatically connect to this service.

Using an at-sea provider can be super expensive! You’ll be charged for data as well as per text if you choose to use this service—and that’s for all incoming texts, too!

How to avoid hefty charges from at-sea providers

Lots of new cruisers have returned home from a relaxing cruise only to discover they’ve run up a huge phone bill, even if they never made any calls or sent a single text message.

Many of us are used to having unlimited data plans at home. Our smartphone apps are often working behind the scenes—updating and checking emails. We often don’t even notice, since we’re not charged any extra on our cell phone bill. But an at-sea provider will bill you for all of that data usage!

To make sure you’re not charged a penny for accidentally using this expensive service, just keep your phone in airplane mode .

But if you want to be able to send and receive texts and phone calls through the network while you’re at sea, here are some tips to help you avoid running up your bill:

  • Disable apps running in the background
  • Disable automatic email updates
  • Turn off roaming data
  • Unsubscribe from text alerts

Depending on your cell phone carrier, you might also be able to prearrange a cruise ship package with talk, text, and data included.

Most larger cell phone providers in the US have special rates or packages to send and receive texts on a cruise ship. For example:

  • AT&T cruise packages
  • T-Mobile cruise ship rates (on select ships)
  • Verizon international plans (includes select cruise lines)

How to tell if your mobile phone is connected to an at-sea provider

When you’re out at sea (and your phone isn’t in airplane mode) you might wonder how you’ll know if you’re connected to a maritime provider. Your phone can sometimes pick up a signal from a cell tower even when you’re several miles from land.

But when you lose that signal, your phone will connect to the at-sea provider. You might see one of these names pop up on your phone’s home screen, in place of a familiar land-based network:

  • Cellular at Sea
  • Wireless Maritime Services (WMS)
  • Telenor Maritime

norwegian cruise texting app

If you didn’t mean to connect to the service, just switch to airplane mode to avoid any further charges.

Using messaging apps to text for free on a cruise ship

If you use text messaging apps like Facebook Messenger, WeChat, or WhatsApp, you can use them on a cruise ship whenever you have an internet connection. Many cruisers who use the free ShipMate app for cruise roll calls also use that app to message other passengers on the ship.

But you’re probably thinking, Wi-Fi on a cruise is expensive! It’s often still a little spendy, even though prices have dropped over the last few years. But on many cruise lines, you can connect to the internet for free!

Some of the more all-inclusive luxury cruise lines, like Regent Seven Seas and Viking Ocean, offer free Wi-Fi as part of the cruise fare, so you’ll be able to send and receive unlimited texts through your messaging app.

Most mainstream lines offer paid internet packages as well as pay-by-the-minute Wi-Fi use. But if you want it to be completely free, here are some tips to slash that price to zero:

Use free onboard credit for a Wi-Fi package

Savvy cruisers know that racking up free onboard credit is a great way to save money on a cruise . Why not use some of it to purchase a Wi-Fi package for your voyage? You can get free credit in a variety of ways—from booking during cruise line promotions, from your travel agency, even from being a cruise line shareholder !

Book when the cruise line is running a free Wi-Fi promotion

Some cruise lines always seem to be running sales that include lots of free perks, and a free Wi-Fi package is a popular promotion.

For example, Norwegian Cruise Line almost always has their Free At Sea promo in effect. You can often choose an internet package, among other free goodies.

Signing up for your favorite cruise line’s email list is the best way to see when they’re offering free Wi-Fi . Or, ask your travel agent to keep an eye out on your behalf.

Join your cruise line’s loyalty program

Most cruise lines have a free loyalty program to reward repeat cruisers with free perks. Once you reach a certain tier in the program, you’ll often earn free internet on each cruise. Some even offer onboard credit for loyal cruisers, which you can use for Wi-Fi.

Do any cruise lines have free messaging apps?

Today, several of the larger cruise lines offer text messaging as part of their onboard apps. Most are free for you to use while you’re on the ship! The catch? You can only send and receive texts with other passengers on your ship, and only while you’re on board. The chat function won’t work when you’re in port and on land.

But, these texting apps are a handy way to stay in touch with friends and family you’re cruising with, or to reach out to new friends you’ve met on board.

norwegian cruise texting app

Let’s look at which cruise lines have a texting or chat function in their onboard apps:

  • Carnival Cruise Line: Carnival HUB
  • Celebrity Cruises: Celebrity Cruises App
  • Disney Cruise Line: Navigator
  • Holland America Line: Navigator
  • MSC Cruises: MSC for Me
  • Norwegian Cruise Line: Cruise Norwegian
  • Princess Cruises: MedallionClass App
  • Royal Caribbean: Royal Caribbean International App

Tip: Be sure to download your cruise line’s app before you set sail. Once you’re at sea, the only way to get the app on your device is by connecting to the ship’s Wi-Fi.

None of these cruise lines require you to purchase an internet package to use their apps. However, some of them—including Norwegian and Carnival—charge a small fee to use the chat function during your cruise. In 2023, Royal Caribbean made the chat function in their onboard app free for all guests.

Using messaging apps to text for free when you’re in port

Once you’re in port and back on dry land, you might be tempted to take your phone out of airplane mode to check your texts. Make sure you only do this if you’re within your data coverage zone! If you’re not, you could be hit with some pretty hefty roaming charges.

It’s a good idea to check your coverage zone with your phone provider before your cruise departs, especially if you’re cruising outside of your home country.

Tip: Many phone companies offer short-term international data, talk, and text plans that you can pre-purchase before your cruise.

But if you’re outside of your coverage area, you can still send and receive texts on messaging apps for free as long as you connect to a Wi-Fi hotspot. (However, you still won’t be able to use SMS texting if you don’t have cellular data.)

Finding free Wi-Fi when you’re in port

At some cruise ports, it’s super-easy to find a Wi-Fi signal. But at other ports it can be more of a challenge. Before you leave the ship for your day in port, ask the experts—the staff and crew on the ship!

Traditionally, crew members have had to pay for onboard Wi-Fi (although this hopefully will be changing in a post-pandemic world). So they know all the best spots to pick up a decent signal for free!

If you forget to ask, here are some spots I often find free Wi-Fi in ports around the world:

  • In the cruise terminal
  • At cafés and restaurants (many do require a purchase)
  • Near fast food restaurants and coffee shops
  • At larger shopping centers or malls
  • Inside public libraries

You might not find a strong signal for free (you probably won’t be able to video chat), but it’s usually enough to send and receive texts.

How to prepare friends, family, and coworkers for your cruise when there’s limited texting

Are your friends, family, and coworkers used to you replying to texts right away? Especially if they’re not cruisers, they might not realize you won’t even see their messages if you’re not connected to the pricy at-sea provider on the ship.

For friends and family, I always let them know that “regular” texting won’t work once I set sail—I’ll be in airplane mode. If they want to keep in touch during the cruise, the best way to do it is via a messaging app.

Tip: Most cruise lines have a special emergency phone number if a family member on land urgently needs to reach you. They’ll need your full name and the ship’s name to send you an emergency message.

For coworkers and business associates who normally text your cell phone number, it’s a good idea to give them a heads-up that you won’t be able to see or reply to any of their texts during your entire cruise.

I’ve noticed that some of the SMS text messages people told me they’ve sent while I was cruising just never arrive—even once I’m home. So for any important messages that coworkers want you to see later, asking them to send an email is a better bet.

Do you have any other questions about how to text on a cruise ship for free? Do you prefer to stay connected by text messaging on a cruise, or would you rather take a vacation from your phone? Let me know in the comments below!

I like an app that’s easy to follow

Of course we are curious about things and we all want to see what’s happening on our cruise. Using an app that’s easy for one to follow and use. It takes time to get use to an app to learn from an app. Time is precious & so is your money. This app is easy to use to find out what’s happening on your cruise. From excursions to shopping on board. To eating out to shopping. Norwegian has done it again. Easy , helpful & delightful 🙂
So much better than the old website booking option. Really well designed

Poor design, unreliable content

The app is extremely unintuitive compared with other cruise lines, lacking basic functionality to book experiences and missing key information you’d expect like restaurant opening times. However the biggest issue by far is the repeatedly incorrect schedule that can severely impact your holiday experience by providing wrong times and locations causing guests to miss out. Based on the numerous inconveniences we encountered on the Norwegian Bliss because of the app, I wouldn’t sail with NCL again.

Stranded cruise passengers in Spain race to catch up with their ship

norwegian cruise texting app

By Maureen O’Hare, CNN

(CNN) — A month after eight Norwegian Cruise Line passengers were stranded in Africa when their ship left without them because they were late getting back, a US couple – ages 84 and 81 – were also left behind by the cruise line in Spain.

Richard and Claudene Gordon of Salt Lake City, Utah, were on a Mediterranean cruise aboard Norwegian Viva with family and friends and looking forward to celebrating Richard’s 85th birthday later this week.

While the ship was docked in Motril, Spain, on Monday, the pair took an independent excursion by themselves to the historic city of Granada, not organized by the cruise line. On their return, their bus was delayed for an hour by a rain storm, Richard Gordon told CNN by phone.

“I am a very experienced traveler and have probably been on as many as 30 cruises during my lifetime,” Gordon said. “Never before have we ever missed catching a ship on time at a port. So we are not someone who abuses the system.”

The pair missed the ship’s all-aboard time of 5.30 p.m. local time, for a sail away at approximately 6 p.m. Gordon said that at around 5.45 p.m. he spoke to a relative on board who raised the alarm that they were nearby and running late, but the relative was told by Norwegian Cruise Line staff that as the ship needed to sail on time, nothing could be done.

According to the Gordons, they arrived at the dock by taxi at 6.10 p.m., while the ship sailed away with Claudene’s medication, Richard’s eyeglasses and both their spare hearing aid batteries and phone chargers on board.

“Our cruise began in Lisbon and we departed from Lisbon about one and a half hours after the scheduled departure at 4:00 p.m.,” Gordon told CNN. “Then the next night or two, at least a half-hour late from the dock, so it is clear that they do not always leave on the exact moment scheduled.”

“They looked around and they looked around and no one was there,” Marilee Barker, the couple’s Utah-based daughter, told CNN by phone. They got a taxi to the police station where “the policeman helped them call back to the dock. And they said, ‘there’s nothing we can do.’ ”

The couple says they received no further assistance from Norwegian Cruise Line at that point, from the ship or on land.

No medication, no hearing aid batteries

“Luckily my dad has traveled, but he’s still 85,” Barker said. As the Norwegian Viva wouldn’t be docking again until Tuesday on the island of Ibiza, “they took a bus up to Granada and found a cute, cheap little B&B.”

Meanwhile, Barker says she and her husband were up to 3 a.m. finding flights and a hotel, eventually getting them on a plane to Palma de Mallorca, where their ship would be docking at 8 a.m. local time on Wednesday May 1.

Claudene Gordon texted her daughter late Tuesday afternoon Spanish time to say that Norwegian Cruise Line had made contact with them for the first time since the incident and had offered them a taxi from their Palma hotel in the morning to reunite them with their boat.

“We really received the royal treatment today,” Gordon told CNN after being reunited with the ship on Wednesday morning, two days they disembarked at Montril.

“They picked us up at the hotel in a beautiful black BMW limousine to take us to the ship. There we were met by the head of ship services who escorted us inside the ship to meet the general manager of the ship, then they escorted us to breakfast, then they escorted us to our cabin.

“We simply told them that we were abandoned at the dock with no one to meet us or tell us where to go, and they said they have already complained about the harbor master who was supposed to take care of things for them. But of course the ship had not contacted us directly for two days so that doesn’t speak so well for them.”

Norwegian Cruise Line said it disputed the time of the couple’s arrival at the pier. “The two guests who went ashore independently arrived at the pier approximately an hour late and missed the all-aboard time of 5:30 p.m. local time, for a sail away at approximately 6:00 p.m.,” a spokesperson said via email.

“A cruise ship follows a set itinerary with designated arrival and departure times. Itineraries are carefully coordinated and planned out well in advance of each voyage to ensure that all of our guests have the experience they are expecting,” they said. While there is a small window of time where late guests can be accommodated, they added, the Gordons arrived outside of this.

“After several attempts to contact these guests with the phone numbers provided, as well as trying to phone their emergency contact, we were unable to speak to them directly. However, we worked closely with the local port agents to make arrangements for the guests to rejoin the vessel.”

The spokesperson said that, prior to the hotel pickup on Wednesday morning, the cruise line had coordinated an airport pick-up for the Gordons at Palma de Mallorca the evening before but were still unable to contact the couple by phone.

In the similar incident last month, eight passengers were late getting back to their Norwegian Cruise Line ship on the African island nation of São Tomé on March 27. They then struggled for days to catch up with their ship as it made its way up the western coast of Africa.

In that case, Norwegian emphasized that the delayed guests were on a private tour that was not organized by the cruise line.

Complete Guide to Using Your Phone on a Cruise (Carnival, Royal Caribbean & More)

At this point, it’s beyond the debate of taking a cruise without bringing a phone. Phones are so much more than a simple device to call or text. Now they are our social lives, our entertainment devices, our cameras, and more.

norwegian cruise texting app

And on the cruise ship they do all that, plus they are useful for the cruise line’s app, which features schedules, maps, and more, all right on your phone.

Of course, while it’s a good idea to put the phone down for a while and enjoy your vacation, it’s also reasonable to wonder if your cell phone will work on a cruise.

The good news? Yes, you can use your phone on a cruise . This includes major cruise lines like Carnival, Royal Caribbean, and Norwegian and more.

The bad news? It might be expensive, and there are several details you need to know about how your phone uses cell service at sea — or the shipboard wi-fi — before you get started.

Below, we’ve outlined what you need to know about using your phone to call, text, and browse the web. In addition, we’ve added some specifics for certain cruise lines.

One thing to keep in mind is that internet and cell phone service are regularly being updated on modern cruise ships . As time goes on, you can expect your access to improve.

In This Article...

How to Use Your Phone on a Cruise

First things first, you have to understand that there are no cell towers in the middle of the sea. Meanwhile, even the strongest cell towers with the best range in perfect conditions can only extend about 30-45 miles. In other words, after the first hour or two of your cruise, you’ll be too far away to pick up any reliable cell signal.

So what do you do in the middle of the water?

To use your cell phone on your cruise, you have two options — either connect to the ship’s cellular service or connect to the ship’s wi-fi . Both will cost you extra.

Cellular Service on Ships For traditional cell service, today’s modern cruise ships use providers such as “Cellular at Sea” or “Wireless Maritime Services”.

For the vast majority of plans, these services are considered international roaming plans by your cell phone company, and you will be charged accordingly for use. That said, if you want to (or need to), you can simply make a phone call or send a text as you would back home — you’ll just be charged significantly more than usual.

Keep in mind that sometimes data service isn’t available through this method. For data, you’re better off using a wi-fi plan (discussed below).

Cell providers offer packages you help cruisers better budget. For example, AT&T offers a couple of cruise ship packages, starting at $50 for a package of minutes and texting. Other carriers will have something similar.

Just be warned of high prices. On AT&T’s $60 plan, it includes only 100 minutes of phone calls, and a $1 per minute overage cost.

In other words, if you use the ship’s cellular service, it’s considered international roaming and will cost you quite a bit of money. This applies to any carrier you have.

Luckily, there is a cheaper way to use your cell phone on the ship — wi-fi.

Cruise ships have cellular service that you can connect to. However, it’s usually considered international roaming and means you’ll be charged high rates to access.

Wi-Fi Service to Use Your Phone on Ships (Recommended) You likely know that instead of using a cell signal, you can hook your phone up to wi-fi and use the internet to make calls, send texts, and surf the web. Some apps like WhatsApp also let you make calls, chat, and even chat via video. You can use these features while a cruise ship.

Today’s cruise ships all come equipped with wi-fi, but there is a charge for passengers to use it. For example, Carnival offers three levels of service — Social (~$15 per day), Value (~$20 per day), and Premium (~$21 per day) — which all offer different speeds and access.

Wi-fi allows you to connect just like you were at home. This includes doing things like making calls from within communication apps like WhatsApp, iMessage, texting, and surfing the web.

Just like at home, you can hook up to the ship’s wi-fi and use your phone as normal. Just keep in mind that you will want to ensure any calls you make are over wi-fi or else they will be considered international roaming calls if connected over the ship’s cellular service. (For that reason, we suggest setting your phone to airplane mode once you get on the ship and then just connect through wi-fi.)

One other thing to know is that different cruise lines and even different ships within a cruise line may offer different online experiences. Some ships are updated with the latest technology while others can have slower service or more limited options of what you can do regarding video calling or streaming.

More details on specific ship wi-fi plans are featured later in this article.

  • Read more about using internet/wi-fi on a cruise
We’d recommend accessing the ship’s wi-fi with your phone to use it as you would back home. This gives you the ability to access the internet, send messages, use apps, and even make calls with some plans/cruise lines.

Using Your Phone in a Port of Call

norwegian cruise texting app

While most of your time is spent on the ship, there will be large chunks of the day spent in port. You might wondering about using your phone during this portion of your cruise.

Cellular Service in Ports of Call In port (and off of the ship’s cellular or wi-fi service), you phone will work just as if you had taken a flight to another country. That is to say you will be reliant on international cellular services.

The good news? Cell phone companies offer short-term international plans that are surprisingly affordable and provide calls, texts, and data.

In addition, many companies — such as T-Mobile — include calling in Mexico and Canada (home to several popular cruise ports) automatically in their plans. You can use the phone exactly as you would at home for no extra charge.

Below, we’ve charted out the cost for some international plans offered by cell phone companies. Remember that these prices could change, so you’ll want to contact your provider before heading out on your cruise.

You can read more about international service from the major carriers below:

  • https://www.verizon.com/plans/international/international-travel/travel-pass/
  • https://www.t-mobile.com/cell-phone-plans/international-roaming-plans

Understand that this is only for service while onshore in a port. When you are on the ship and in the middle of the ocean, you will need to use the ship’s wi-fi or cellular service. It may be worth it to use just one service or another instead of paying for both during your cruise.

When in port, you’ll be connecting to international towers. Phone companies have international plans (sometimes you can simply pay for a single day pass) that allow you access just as you would have at home.

Wi-Fi Service to Use Your Phone in Port Want to save some money? Then you may be able to skip dealing with international plans altogether and just connect to wi-fi hotspots in port. In fact, it may even be free.

norwegian cruise texting app

To be sure, your wi-fi plan from the ship won’t work in port (unless you are at a private island; sometimes ships extend service to their islands.) But many ports of call offer wi-fi service.

Sometimes there is service sold that will cover the port area. Other times spots like restaurants or shops will offer free wi-fi service to customers as a perk for shopping there.

Either way, it’s a cheaper and easier way of using your phone in port if you are fine with having access on a more limited basis.

Many ports have wi-fi service at shops or restaurants that can get you access while you’re there. It’s an easy way to check in back home if you don’t need constant access.

Using Your Phone on a Carnival Cruise

As mentioned above, we recommend using the ship’s wi-fi to use your phone . This will allow you to make calls (you may have to use an app like WhatsApp to do so), send messages, email, and browse the web.

To access Carnival’s wi-fi, you’ll have to sign up for one of three packages :

Social (~$15 per day) — Offers access to social media sites like Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, WhatsApp, Snapchat and more. It also provides access to airline sites. However, it doesn’t include access to most of the web, nor does it support in-app calling, streaming services (Netflix, Spotify, YouTube), or Skype.

Value ($20 per day) — Offers everything in the Social package, with the addition of popular news, weather, banking, finance, and entertainment sites. However, it still doesn’t allow streaming or Skype/FaceTime calling.

Premium (~$21 per day) — Offers the fastest speeds on the ship and full web access. While Carnival’s website says this plan doesn’t support video streaming (outside Netflix) or FaceTime calls, we’ve personally done both with this plan. If you are a heavy phone user on your cruise or want to make video calls, then you’ll likely want the Premium package.

You can purchase a plan at a discount before your cruise starts or you can simply purchase when you are on the ship. Note that shipboard prices are higher than what’s shown here.

Read more about Carnival’s internet service here .

Using Your Phone on a Royal Caribbean Cruise

Just like with Carnival and other major cruise lines, we think you’ll be best off connecting to the ship’s wi-fi in order to use your phone on a Royal Caribbean ship.

The cruise line offers VOOM internet access across its fleet, which is touted as one of the fastest wi-fi services of any major cruise line. With it, you can hook up your phone to wi-fi and make calls (via wi-fi), text, use apps, and browse the web.

Prices are not set in stone, but vary between around $15-25 a day. Discounts are available for ordering online ahead of time.

Read more about Royal Caribbean’s Internet service here .

Using Your Phone on a Norwegian Cruise

Norwegian offers two different levels of wi-fi access on their ships that allow you to connect with your phone. From there, you can use wi-fi to send messages, talk, and send email to keep in touch.

First is the Unlimited Wi-Fi Package ($30 per day) that includes access to things like Facebook, Twitter, and Snapchat, along with the rest of the web. This includes apps like WhatsApp, iMessage, and FaceTime, allowing you to keep in touch. However, it doesn’t allow streaming services.

Second, there is the Unlimited Premium Wi-Fi Package ($40 per day), giving you full access to the web and streaming services — including YouTube, TikTok, and Netflix. With this level of service, making calls, sending texts, and video chats are no issue.

You can read more about NCL’s internet service here .

Using Your Phone on Other Cruise Lines (Disney, Celebrity, Princess, and Others)

As you can see, the easiest way to use your phone on a cruise is to use it to connect to the ship’s wi-fi. While we’ve spelled out more details for Carnival, Royal Caribbean, and Norwegian Cruise Line, this method will work on any ship you sail.

Through the wi-fi offered on your cruise ship, you should be able to connect and use your phone just as you would on land. This includes web browsing, messaging, and calls through wi-fi. Just keep in mind that you might have to upgrade to the highest-tier service in order to get full benefits of the internet like streaming and video calls. In our experience, lower-tier wi-fi plans are slower, meaning choppier connections on things like video calls.

Hey Tanner: Thanks for the great article. We are going on Norwegian to the Panama Canal. My cruise buddy has Verizon and wants to make a voice call to her husband. He does not know how to use WhatsApp or FaceTime. Can they make regular voice calls using the ships Wi-fi? We understand that she can call him from ports with her Verizon Travel Pass, but she is concerned about sea days. Thanks!

Typically phones have a “call over wi-fi” setting. I’ve used it before and it worked well, but usually I use Facetime to call back home.

Tanner – I will going on a Norwegian cruise and would like to use WhatsApp for audit calls. I don’t need to make any viedo calls. Can I get by with the Unlimited plan or do I need the Unlimited Plus?

My advice is to always go with the fastest plan just because in general speeds are slower on cruises (getting better in some cases with Starlink).

But it looks like voice calls don’t require that much bandwidth. My suggestion is if you only want access for these calls, then opt for the cheaper plan and test it out. If it’s not enough, then you can always upgrade.

Tanner, my brother in – law just started his job on a cruise ship – they are provided only 5 gigabytes per month for phone use – he uses what’s app – what can advise him to do to get more gigabytes ? Approximate cost ?

I’ll be perfectly honest: the Royal Caribbean cruise was fantastic except for the beverage package issue, gratuity, and the cell service/internet packages. For the price of the cruise, surely you could include water, tea, coffee, and fountain soda. Those are cheap! I did know ahead of time that 18% gratuity was added to everything, yet for some reason I bought the gratuity package. Then would forget and add tip above the 18% plus the gratuity package. I know I’m responsible, but still felt taken advantage of. AT&T charged me 100.00 within 3-4 hours (started before we even left port). Then cut off service to “protect” me. So I pay another 100.00 for their “international data plan”- which is NOT 10.00 a day. Then I pay 75.00 for better internet speed through Royal. Guess what- 275.00 and I STILL couldn’t use my phone half of the time. I felt nickeled and dimed to death between just getting a bottle of water and checking my work email. And now that I’m home, my phone has ZERO internet. Sigh. FYI: This was my first cruise, but I did research the best I could ahead of time. I didn’t even think about the cell issue. But really- RC is first class.

Do you know if you can get reception on the ship from an island nearby if you are docked at a tender port, or is that still too far away? I have a virtual doctor visit the day I’m in Grand Cayman that I really don’t want to cancel and I would rather use my international phone plan then waste my limited ship wifi minutes.

We’re traveling on Cunard next month. Their website says that even if a phone is in airplane mode but connected to the ship wifi, voice call charges will still be incurred by the cell provider. That doesn’t make sense. Are they just saying that to protect their “assests”?

Never heard that before. I’d likely just take them at their word and plan around it.

If I purchase the cruise plan through AT&Tfor 100$ Do I still have to purchase the wifi on princess as well?

Does regular wi-fi calling (Not WhatsApp) work on Carnival social plan?

That I don’t know. I haven’t personally tested it.

I have straight talk, would I still be able to call or txt since it’s a pay as I go an each month. We will be on Carnival Horizon in October.

Well at sea you won’t have service, but you can hook up to the wi-fi and use your phone that way.

If I purchase the International Plan on Verizon, will it connect to the ship’s tower? I am going on Carnival Horizon in March 2023 to the southern Caribbean (Aruba, Bonaire, Dominican Republic). If I’m signing up and paying for this plan, I want to make sure I actually have coverage my entire cruise (on and off the ship). Can you help?

I’m not sure how the service works on the ship (I personally use wi-fi). You’ll need to contact your carrier to ask as it’s their plan.

GOING TO BAHAMAS AND ORLANDO FLORIDA. WHEN IN FLORIDA AND I AM OFF THE SHIP CAN I USE THE PHONE TO CALL AND TEXT WITHOUT BEING CHARGED MORE THAN MY NORMAL BILL. I WONT BE ON THE SHIP USING THE PHONE ONLY FOR PICTURES. I AM GOING ON NCL AND I AM A VERIZON CUSTOMER

Depends on your plan, but likely not. Most of the time, however, you can get a short-term international plan for cheap:

https://www.verizonwireless.com/solutions-and-services/international-travel/

everyone gives info for making calls, etc. what about getting calls???? have a disabled son and I need contact with him each morning around 6 am Central. how do I arrange that?

The best idea we can suggest is to sign up for the Internet package and use a program like WhatsApp to talk.

Question about the NCL App (texting feature)

Am I reading the information correctly that once onboard and after the NCL app has been activated to use the communication feature, you will be assigned a new "number" to use instead of your room number or phone number?  What kind of number (how long is it?) I'm trying to put together some contact cards for our group and if that is the case, then I need to leave a blank for that information next to everyone's room number.  Thanks!

The phone receives a unique ID, but if I recall you can search by name and room number to add someone.

Thank you - that makes sense. I do know (or so I've been told) that once you create a group you cannot add someone to it and that a new group has to be created but I wasn't sure about how the new number worked.

Sorry, I don't know how the group thing works, I only interacted with one person using it.

Those features and onboard functions are unlocked once connected to ship's WiFi inTRAnet, registered and activated.  By agreeing to the optional texting/messaging features for a one-time fee, the server/system will generate/assign an unique 8 digits number/extension ... at least, that's how it was.

App has been updated recently, again, it is best to check it prior to embarkation.  For Android devices, the latest App dated 30 Jan, 2020 "now you can receive and respond to stateroom upgrades" (Upgrade Advantage bidding, I assume ...)

I was just on the Getaway end of January. The app still works the same, unless there was a significant change with the Jan 30th update. I use a Samsung S9. The texting and calling features work well. Not sure on adding someone to a group once you have created the group, I did not try that. Ask the person at the Internet Café desk,  that is the person I was directed to talk to when I had a question.

What is the cost to use the app ? And do you have to sign up to use the ships wifi in order to use it ?

I believe it is $9.95 regardless of how long the cruise is. The app is actually free and you can do a lot on it prior to the cruise. Then, about 2 days prior to the cruise, the format changes to "vacation mode" and you access a map to the pier and your e docs. Once in the ship, you select "I am on board" and it gives you directions on how to enable the wifi and at THAT time you will pay the fee to use it. You do not need a wifi plan and it does not take minutes from any plan you have.

- app is free and any shipboard activity is free (making show or dinner reservations, schedules, etc)

- access ship's wifi is free and no additional internet package required.

- $10 per device for texting / calling functionality

This is what it looks like a couple of days pre cruise. It is not what it looks like if you download it before that. It will look similar to your page on NCL.com where you select tours, dining, etc.

Can you only call/text other people on the same cruise or can you call anyone over the wifi? Do I need an internet package or can I access the internet with the app?

- you can call people not on the cruise at a discounted rate (but still expensive per minute as it's sent off the ship via satellite)

- as mentioned, you do not need to purchase an internet package for the text/call functionality of the app

- internet is NOT able to be accessed as this is not an internet app

Sounds like you may want to look at the Social Mesia Package to communicate back home or the Unlimited Internet Package.

I bought the Unlimited package for our teen daughter. I was hoping to make and receive phone calls from my parents, just in case.

Thank you!!!

Yes, the numbers are different than the room numbers. They do this to protect privacy, as you might meet people on the ship you want to exchange numbers with, but don't want to give out your room number. They usually start with 77-

As of when I last sailed in October, you could not add new people to a group chat within the app, you have to start a whole new group chat with the people you want in it. Once you start a group chat, the people you start it with the ones locked into that chat.

You can call or text others onboard that registered and paid the one time fee to unlock the optional features in the free app, which uses the ship's WiFi inTRAnet, as it only connect to onboard servers, not to external websites or Internet.

  6. 11 Things to Know About the Cruise Norwegian App

There's little argument that wi-fi on a Norwegian cruise is expensive. It can cost up to $35 per day. The good news is that you don't need to pay for wi-fi in order to use the app. While the app connects to the ship's internet system, it's free to use. The only part of the program that costs money is the call and messaging feature.
