Off peak train times.
Off-Peak train times are generally accepted as those outside of the traditional morning or evening rush hour. But how do you know when your ticket is valid? Put simply: When is Off-Peak?
When are the Off-Peak train times?
On short hops and local journeys, Off-Peak train times usually start at 08:45, 09:00, 09:15 or 09:30 on weekdays. On longer distance trips, especially on trains to London, restrictions can be more complicated. They can be based on when you arrive at your destination, rather than when you leave.
For journeys in certain areas, such as Greater Manchester and West Yorkshire , some Off-Peak tickets aren’t valid in the evening peak, either. This is normally between 16:01 and 18:29.
Do Off-Peak train times vary by company?
Yes, they do. For example, on Avanti West Coast and LNER , all peak times have been abolished on Fridays. This means that you can use an Off-Peak (or Super Off-Peak) ticket on their trains at any time on a Friday.
If you’re travelling on CrossCountry , Off-Peak usually starts at 09:30 on a weekday. Many companies also restrict Off-Peak train tickets during the evening rush hour.
When are Super-Off Peak train times?
Super Off-Peak tickets are tickets that usually have more restrictive conditions attached. For example, a lot of tickets have restrictions meaning that you need to avoid both the morning and evening rush hours.
How strict these restrictions are can depend on the specific ticket. If you’re travelling on West Midlands Trains to London, the restrictions on some tickets also apply on a Saturday.
Some companies also have ‘weekend’ Super Off-Peak tickets. These are pretty simple to understand, as they’re valid all day on Weekends and Bank Holidays only.
Are Bank Holidays Off-Peak?
Yes. The railway treats a Bank Holiday like a weekend (or more specifically, a Sunday) when it comes to train tickets. This means that you can use Off-Peak and Super Off-Peak tickets all day on Bank Holidays.
Don’t forget that the timetable will likely be different to a normal weekday too, so check ahead before you make your way to the station.
When are the Off-Peak train times on my route?
While we can’t list when every single ticket is valid, there’s an easy way for you to check. Every ticket comes with a ‘restriction code’ which tells us about any time and date restrictions that might apply. Let’s take a look at where to find this code on an eTicket:
Below all of your journey details, you’ll see a heading called ‘ Ticket Details ‘. This will tell you the restriction code that applies to your ticket. In this case, the restriction code is ‘1L’. By following the link on the ticket, we’ll reach this page:
That’s a lot of information at once! Here’s what this page can tell us:
- Which trains we’re not allowed to use on our outward and return journeys
- That if we break our journey overnight on the outward journey, the same morning restrictions will apply (so we can’t set off again first thing in the morning on a Monday to Thursday!)
- Other restriction codes that apply if you’re taking a particular operator
- That the restrictions don’t apply at all on a Friday if we’re going to or from London Kings Cross or Stevenage
- That restrictions will be lifted on certain dates, such as over Christmas.
So, how can we apply this to our ticket?
- We’re travelling through London Kings Cross, so on Monday to Thursday afternoons, we can’t leave there between 15:00 and 18:59
- We’re booked on the 18:58 train, so this wouldn’t be valid on a Monday to Thursday. However, we’re travelling on a Friday, so we’re all good!
Looking to check when your ticket is valid? Simply click here and select ‘Restriction Code’ before typing yours in.
Are Off-Peak train tickets refundable?
Yes! When you book with Railsmartr , all Off-Peak train tickets are refundable. Your journey doesn’t have to be disrupted, you can simply change your mind.
Many companies charge an admin fee if you try to refund them, which can sometimes wipe out most of the value of the ticket. That’s why we’d always recommend booking with us.
When are Super Off-Peak train times?
In most cases, Super Off-Peak train times on long-distance journeys are from around 10:00 to 15:00 and after 19:00 on weekdays. If you’re travelling out of London King’s Cross with LNER or London Euston with Avanti West Coast , then Super Off-Peak tickets are usually valid all day on Fridays, too.
The main exception to this rule is if you’re travelling with West Midlands Trains (or London Northwestern Railway as they’re known on some routes). Their Super Off-Peak tickets are very restrictive. Here’s what you need to know about West Midlands Trains Super Off-Peak tickets:
- They’re usually only valid to arrive in London after 13:00 . You also can’t leave your origin station between 16:00 and 19:00
- When you’re leaving London, they’re valid after 10:30 , before 15:59 and after 19:01
- These restrictions apply on Mondays to Saturdays, so you can only travel at any time on Sundays or Bank Holidays.
If you’re travelling with South Western Railway , then you’ll also find similar restrictions. Their Super Off-Peak tickets are only valid to arrive in London after 14:01 (Monday to Saturday) and you can only return from London between 12:01 and 15:59 and after 19:01 .
Some operators in the South East also do Super Off-Peak tickets that are only valid on weekends and Bank Holidays, such as Great Northern , Thameslink and Greater Anglia .
I’m still not sure if my ticket is valid!
We know that Off-Peak train times can be challenging to navigate. When you book with Railsmartr , we’ll only offer you tickets that are valid on the itinerary that you’re following. If we offer you an Off-Peak or Super Off-Peak ticket for your chosen trains, then it will be valid for your trip.
Best of all, we don’t charge any fees. Need to change your trip? No problem. You’ll only ever pay the difference in price, if there is one.
Alternatively, please feel free to contact us if you have any questions about buying your ticket.

How to check when Off-Peak trains are?
Unfortunately, there is not one set rule that applies to all Train Operators. Most Off-Peak tickets are found during weekend travel or through the week outside of commuting hours, but the only way to know for sure is to check an individual journey using our app or website.
Our app highlights if train times are Off-Peak or Super Off-Peak. If neither is displayed, then it’s a Peak train.

Transport for London Off-Peak Fridays trial
Make your Fridays more rewarding
Embrace the ease of Off-Peak travel every Friday
Southern Railway is excited to be a part of the Off-Peak Fridays trial by Transport for London (TfL), offering our passengers a unique opportunity to travel at off-peak fares all day on Fridays. This TfL-led initiative, running from 8th March to 31st May 2024 , aims to make your commutes more affordable and encourage exploration of London's vibrant offerings.
Enjoy off-peak travel all day within the London Pay As You Go (PAYG) area with contactless payment options including keyGo , Oyster , and contactless bank cards . With this trial, every Friday transforms into an off-peak day, allowing you to enjoy reduced fares on your journeys across parts of our network. Whether it's a regular commute or a spontaneous city adventure, the Off-Peak Fridays trial makes your travel plans more budget-friendly and flexible.
Use TfL's Single Fare Finder to check Pay As You Go (PAYG) fares for a particular journey and maximise your savings by planning your journey ahead.
Included in the Off-Peak Friday trial
- Pay As You Go (PAYG) Travel: All journeys made using keyGo, contactless or Oyster cards within the Transport for London payment zones. This includes travel to or from Gatwick Airport, Luton Airport Parkway, Welwyn Garden City and Hertford North. See our network map for full details.
- Daily Cap Adjustments: Benefit from an adjusted daily cap at Off-Peak rates, maximising savings if you are making multiple journeys. Please note that while you will benefit from Off-Peak fares on our services using keyGo , a keyGo Smartcard can not be used on other rail services and Transport for London services. If you are planning on making multiple trips around London between tube, bus and rail, then you are best using a contactless card or Oyster to benefit from daily and weekly capping.
- Special Concessions: 60+ London Oyster photocard, Disabled and Older Persons’ Freedom Pass and Veterans Oyster photocard holders can enjoy free travel before 09:30, extending the convenience of off-peak travel throughout the entire day on Fridays
- Railcards: If you hold a valid railcard , and have attached this to your keyGo account, you can benefit from railcard savings all day on Fridays within the relevant zones.
Not included in the trial
- Paper Tickets and Travelcards: Single paper tickets and Day Travelcards will retain peak-hour restrictions and are not included in the off-peak Friday trial. Season tickets also remain unaffected as there is no off-peak option for these tickets
- Bus and Tram Fares: Fares remain consistent at a flat rate of £1.75, as these services are not included in the off-peak trial journeys that go outside the London PAYG area
- Train tickets and One Day Travelcards: Train tickets and One Day Travelcards will retain peak-hour restrictions and are not included in the off-peak Friday trial. Season tickets also remain unaffected as there is no off-peak option for these tickets

Total solar eclipse April 8, 2024 facts: Path, time and the best places to view
In the U.S., 31 million people already live inside the path of totality.
Scroll down to see the list of U.S. cities where the April 8 total solar eclipse will be visible, the duration of the eclipse in those locations and what time totality will begin, according to GreatAmericanEclipse.com .
"Eclipse Across America," will air live Monday, April 8, beginning at 2 p.m. ET on ABC, ABC News Live, National Geographic Channel, Nat Geo WILD, Disney+ and Hulu as well as network social media platforms.
On April 8, 2024, a historic total solar eclipse will cast a shadow over parts of the United States, prompting a mass travel event to the path of totality -- from Texas to Maine and several states and cities in between.
A total solar eclipse occurs when the moon passes between the sun and the Earth and, for a short time, completely blocks the face of the sun, according to NASA .
The track of the moon's shadow across Earth's surface is called the path of totality, and to witness the April 8 total solar eclipse, viewers must be within the 115-mile-wide path. To discover when to see the solar eclipse in totality or the partial eclipse in locations across the U.S. outside of the path, check out NASA's Eclipse Explorer tool .
Eclipse travel
In the U.S., 31 million people already live inside the path of totality, bringing the celestial phenomenon to their doorsteps, Michael Zeiler, expert solar eclipse cartographer at GreatAmericanEclipse.com told ABC News.
MORE: Eclipse glasses: What to know to keep your eyes safe
But for individuals outside of the path, investing time and money are needed to experience the event in totality.
Eclipse chasers, or umbraphiles, are individuals who will do almost anything, and travel almost anywhere, to see totality, according to the American Astronomical Society .
"There's a very active community of solar eclipse chasers and we will go to any reasonable lengths to see solar eclipses anywhere in the world," Zeiler said. "All of us are united in pursuing the unimaginable beauty of a total solar eclipse."
MORE: The surprising reason why a Texas county issued a disaster declaration ahead of April total solar eclipse
Bringing together both eclipse experts and novice sky watchers, the total solar eclipse on April 8 is projected to be the U.S.'s largest mass travel event in 2024, according to Zeiler, who likened it to "50 simultaneous Super Bowls across the nation."
"When you look at the number of people expected to come to the path of totality for the solar eclipse, we estimate those numbers are roughly the equivalent of 50 simultaneous Super Bowls across the nation, from Texas to Maine," he said.
Eclipse map, path of totality
In the U.S., the path of totality begins in Texas and will travel through Oklahoma, Arkansas, Missouri, Illinois, Kentucky, Indiana, Ohio, Pennsylvania, New York, Vermont, New Hampshire and Maine. Small parts of Tennessee and Michigan will also experience the total solar eclipse, according to NASA.
Best times, places to view eclipse
Below is a list of some American cities where the April 8 total solar eclipse will be most visible -- pending weather forecasts -- the duration of the eclipse in those locations and what time totality will begin, according to GreatAmericanEclipse.com.
