Forward Press: Austin’s first PGA Tour stop fittingly starts at Harvey Penick’s place

Other than the former Legends of Golf and another Champions event that lasted six years, Austin, Texas has never had the young guns visit. In a town synonymous worldwide with youthful thinking, this is just so wrong. (Google South By Southwest, old people.)

Everything will change in dramatic fashion this week with Dell rescuing the WGC Match Play Championship and putting a strong Austin bent on the proceedings, like free Uber rides and plenty of parties. Whether all of Austin's fun and tech industry energy masks the uneasy feeling players have about match play two weeks before the Masters remains to be seen. But so far, so good.

"If the difficulty to get a ticket is an indication it is going to be fantastic,” says Austin resident and now-retired PGA Tour pro Joe Ogilvie. “Austin Country Club has embraced the event and they have driven the success.”

Austin-CC.jpg

The event fittingly lands at ACC, which dates to 1899 and is now at its third site. The wild Pete Dye design that figures to provide a turbulent setting for match play golf. A 1984 design that features two distinct nines that have been flipped for this week’s event, ACC’s closing lakeside stretch will play a more prominent (and fan friendlier) role than just about any course to have hosted the WGC Match Play.

Austin CC was the home club of legendary instructor Harvey Penick, whose Little Red Book became the biggest selling golf instruction book of all time and spawned two sequels with author Bud Shrake. Penick worked most of his instruction magic with Ben Crenshaw, Tom Kite and Betsy Rawls at a site since developed, but did oversee the club’s transition to the site of this week’s event.

“Folks are beyond excited,” says Kevin Robbins, the former Austin American Statesman golf writer who is the author of the new biography on Penick. “They want to see Jason Day and Adam Scott and Rory McIlroy and Jordan Spieth and Phil Mickelson.”

The top 64 are coming, minus Jim Furyk (wrist) and Henrik Stenson (well-publicized scheduling decision). The format repeats last year’s successful debut of round robin play, where 16 pools of four will play each other Wednesday to Friday, advancing 16 winners to the weekend’s single elimination 18-hole matches. This year ties in those pods will be decided by sudden death playoffs Friday afternoon starting at the first tee.

Even with the potential for match play intrigue, Robbins thinks locals will just be excited to be inside the gates of a private club only partly visible from Pennybacker Bridge on Loop 360.

Austin-Country-Club.png

“You can’t see much of ACC from roads or streets. I know some very good players in Austin who’ve never been inside the gates. So I think part of the enthusiasm has to do with television coverage of the front side of the course--the back-nine holes every other week of the year.”

Before we get to the TV times and other fun stuff planned, a few questions with Robbins about Austin and his new book, Harvey Penick: The Life and Wisdom of the Man Who Wrote The Book On Golf. Robbins will be signing the book all day Wednesday at ACC’s pro shop.

FORWARD PRESS: What inspired you to do a biography of Harvey Penick?

KEVIN ROBBINS: My grandmother gave me the Little Red Book for Christmas in 1992. Every chapter felt like an epiphany. I’d never read anything like it. It completely changed the way I looked at golf. I circled words, underlined passages, dogeared pages, filled the margins with stars and check marks and exclamation points. I bought the three other books and loved them just as much.

All these years later, after I’d written many times about Harvey and his family and his pupils as a golf writer for the Austin American-Statesman, I was lying in bed, trying to think of a book idea, because I was a college teacher now, and college teachers are expected to write books. I originally wanted tell the man-in-full story of the 1995 Masters. But Ben Crenshaw was tepid about the idea, and I really needed his participation for it to work. Literally the very next night, lying in bed again, I realized I was missing the point entirely. I didn’t want to write about the 1995 Masters. I wanted to write about the reason we remember the 1995 Masters. That reason was Harvey.

FP: How do you think Austin CC will work as a tournament venue?

KR: Great question. I've played ACC a number of times, but not until the 2012 Texas Mid-Amateur qualifier did I truly learn how to score on it. It isn’t a bomber’s golf course. You have to hit spots with tee shots — sometimes in order to avoid losing a ball in Lake Austin or in a canyon on what will play in the Dell as the front nine. It’s Texas, so you play in wind. It’s a spectacular second-shot course.

I think it favors players who excel with wedges. It’s a short course, so even with fairway metals and long irons from the tee, these players will have many approaches of 120 yards or less. Three of the par-five holes, and maybe four (I don’t know which tee they’ll play on No. 16), are reachable, so little scrambling chips and pitches will be crucial.

It will be cozy. The club isn’t easy to get to, or to walk. It’s bound in many places by the lake, the canyons or, to a lesser extent, neighborhoods/houses/mansions. It’s not roomy like, say, an Oakmont or Augusta National. Think Colonial, only up-and-down like Augusta — with less space for spectators.

FP: Favorite TexMex spot in Austin?

KR: Trap question. Mine is Matt’s El Rancho, with about 33 other places in a close tie for second.

FP: Favorite golf course in Austin?

KR: Another trap question. I have a rotation of four, and I often answer differently, depending on the occasion.

If this were any other week of the year, I might say The Hills Country Club (designed by Jack Nicklaus, a shot-carver’s dogleggy dream, home of the long-lost Champions Tour event in Austin known as the FedEx Kinko’s Classic), the Onion Creek Club (designed by Jimmy Demaret, birthplace of the Champions Tour in 1978, the prettiest little cypress-lined course east of Houston) or Austin Golf Club (designed by Ben Crenshaw and Bill Coore, a quiet delight of walkable purity — it feels like a sanctuary to me -- tucked into the ranch land west of Austin).

But it’s not any other week of the year, so my answer is this: ACC.

Here are two social media posts of the big build-out on ACC’s back nine:

Match Play Brackets That Can't Be Leaked!

Golf Channel is taking the PGA Tour’s bracket show to Austin’s Paramount Theater and they’re predicting some big appearances, including Ben Crenshaw, Tom Kite, Rickie Fowler, Rory McIlroy and UT’s former quarterback, Colt McCoy. Oh, and current UT football coach Charlie Strong (will there be boo-birds?).

The 7-9 PM show will be live so there won’t be any need to check Twitter for leaked brackets.

Here’s how it works. The top seed for each of the 16 four-player groups will be filled by the top 16 players in the field by order of their position in the Official World Golf Ranking. The remaining three in each group will be determined by a blind draw from three pools based on each player’s OWGR standing.

For instance, No. 1-ranked Jordan Spieth is the No. 1 seed in the tournament, making him the No. 1 seed in group 1.

The final three spots in his group will be randomly drawn from the pools below.

• Pool B – Players seeded 17-32

• Pool C – Players seeded 33-48

• Pool D – Players seeded 49-64

Golf Channel says completed groups will be posted live to PGATOUR.COM and “fans will be able to follow analysis and commentary throughout the draw.”

The match play begins Wednesday, with 35 hours of Golf Channel and NBC coverage.

Austin Means Save Lions Talk

Lions Muni, the public course where Ben Crenshaw and Tom Kite honed their games and which was a historic place in desegregating the game, is in danger. Count on hearing more about it this week. Leased to the City of Austin by the University of Texas, the richest school in America based on endowment size -- yes I just typed that sentence -- wants to develop the course.

Locals are not pleased and have until 2019 to make their case. The good folks at Criquet are hosting a huge party Friday of WGC-Dell Match Play week to raise funds .

Guitarist extraordinaire and Austin-favorite Gary Clark Jr. has signed something to help raise funds.

Talk, Talk And More Talk

Feherty has another huge “get” in President George W. Bush, Monday at 9 pm ET on Golf Channel.

A preview clip of the former president talking about what you can learn from playing golf with someone.

feherty-bush.png

Feherty is off to a huge start, with the two-part Jordan Spieth premiere seeing an increase in week two, with a 351,000 viewer average, up from a 325,000 average for part 1. With repeats, they’re the most watched episodes of the show, and second only premiere-wise to the 2011 chat with Lee Trevino.

Callaway Live features a doubleheader this week with the LPGA in Carlsbad for the Kia Classic. Lydia Ko stops by Tuesday and Morgan Pressel on Wednesday. Both shows stream at 9 pm ET at Callaway Live’s page.

LPGA’s Final First Major Tune-Up

The Kia Classic returns to Aviara Resort in Carlsbad to give players one last tune-up prior to the ANA Inspiration (aka the Dinah Shore).

Golf Channel airs tape-delayed coverage Thursday and Friday at 8 pm ET, then goes live Saturday and Sunday from 6-9 pm ET.

2024 CJ Cup Byron Nelson odds, picks, prediction, bets

Mcilroy finding his smile may be exactly what he needed, timberwolves sweep 'superteam' suns; nfl draft grades, sam burns wins final match play in rout over cameron young.

AUSTIN, Texas (AP) Sam Burns won the WGC-Dell Technologies Match Play on the 13th green, most appropriate for this unpredictable tournament because that's where he thought he had lost it.

Some four hours earlier, Burns stood on that same green ready to remove his cap and congratulate defending champion Scottie Scheffler, who had a 4-foot birdie putt to win their semifinal match in overtime.

And then it all changed, quickly and dramatically, like so often in match play.

Scheffler missed. Burns birdied the next hole to win. And then Burns delivered a masterclass performance with eight birdies over his last 10 holes for a 6-and-5 victory over Cameron Young in the final edition of the Match Play.

“Crazy week,” Burns said.

Rory McIlroy was 2 up with three holes to play against Young in the semifinals when one swing (into a bunker) and one bad break (into the side collar of a bunker) and one missed putt (on the 19th hole) left him playing a consolation match.

Young went from one of the most satisfying rounds of his career to feeling helpless. He made a few mistakes in the championship match, but there was no stopping Burns and that silky putting stroke at Austin Country Club.

“I was a million under for the week,” Young said. “It's really easy to think you’re so close. There’s only one guy standing between you and winning a tournament. But that one guy is Sam Burns playing really well.”

Indeed, the final edition of this wild and wacky tournament ultimately turned into a downer for just about everyone but Burns.

Burns went on a tear Sunday afternoon in the championship match, with just enough help from Young at the end for the second-largest margin of victory over 18 holes in match play.

Young had to settle for his sixth runner-up finish in the last two seasons on the PGA Tour, disappointed but not without perspective. With concessions, he was 41-under par for the week. There wasn't much he could do against Burns.

“There might not have been anybody beating him today the way he played,” Young said.

The gallery, strong and loud and thoroughly entertained during the semifinals, thought they were going to get the world's top two players in the final match of the final Match Play. That turned out to be only partially true. Burns was celebrating his fifth PGA Tour title as McIlroy and Scheffler played on. McIlroy won the consolation match, 2 and 1.

Burns went from 3 up to 2 down to 1 up playing the final hole against Scheffler until the No. 1 player in the world hit a beauty of a pitch-and-run up the slope to a back pin on the 18th for a birdie to send it to extra hole.

It was the first time in the 24-year history that both semifinal matches went overtime.

Scheffler was 4 feet away from becoming the first player in three straight title matches, and then he missed the short birdie putt on No. 13, their 20th hole.

“That's the nature of this match play,” Burns said. “It’s one holed putt or missed putt away from winning or losing. He gave me a gift there on 13.”

Burns answered with a fairway bunker shot to 15 feet and a birdie putt to win.

He fell behind early, and briefly, against Young. Burns went 2 up on the seventh hole when Young missed a 6-foot par putt for his first bogey since the seventh hole on Thursday. Burns made a 20-foot birdie on the eighth to go 3 up, and he was on his way.

The end was anticlimactic. Young pulled his shot from rough into the water on the par-5 12th, and then he came up short of the green and into the water on the reachable par-4 13th.

Burns chipped to just inside 3 feet, and Young removed his cap without making him putt.

The highlight for Young was his semifinal win over McIlroy, who was in full flight for so much of the week. McIlroy was 2 up with three holes to play when Young won the 16th with a birdie and then hit a nifty pitch-and-run up the slope and his purest putt of the week.

On the first extra hole at the par-5 12th, Young was in such a bad spot in the bunker next to the lip that he could only blast out to 169 yards with McIlroy just over 200 yards for his second. Young hammered pitching wedge to 9 feet and made birdie. McIlroy played short and right of the green, chipped to just inside 9 feet and missed.

That was the kind of theater that graced Austin Country Club all week, particularly Sunday morning with the prospect of a McIlroy-Scheffler title match. Instead, it got a championship match that felt like a mismatch the way Burns was playing.

It was a flat ending to what has been 23 dynamic events of Match Play since the World Golf Championships began in 1999. Match Play was the first one, a 38-hole final won by Jeff Maggert at La Costa. That was a nail-biter. This was a rout.

Match Play will not be on the schedule in 2024 as the PGA Tour moves toward elevated events for the top 70 or so players, a response to the threat of Saudi-funded LIV Golf.

Burns moved to No. 10 in the world and collected $3.5 million from the $20 million purse. Young got $2.2 million for finishing second, though a trophy after so many close calls would seem to be invaluable.

Bohls: PGA Tour bidding ACC fond — and too soon — farewell

pga tour austin tx

  • After an eight-year run, including the COVID-canceled tournament in 2020 -- the PGA Tour and Austin Country Club will part ways.
  • It's a shame to lose the WGC-Dell Technologies Match Play event because it's been a huge success and offers the only such format on the schedule.
  • "It's a bittersweet time," ACC golf pro emeritus Dale Morgan said. "We've had a great run and we're going to have a great champion."

So long, Dell Match Play.

Nice knowing you.

After Sunday’s final round concludes, Austin will say goodbye to the both cherished and cursed 8-year-old event, and it will be a sad farewell to a friend.

The mouthful of all golf tournaments, the World Golf Championships-Dell Technologies Match Play, quickly became one of the more popular dates on the schedule among the players, fans and sponsors and remains so. Or did.

The event at venerable Austin Country Club has seen major champions such as Scottie Scheffler, Dustin Johnson, Bubba Watson and Jason Day loft the Walter Hagen Cup on Sundays but also an ultimate grinder, Kevin Kisner. But because of the beauty of the quirky format and the depth of the field, it’s never disappointed.

Little chance of that when you have, as this year, a tournament with 64 of the best 77 golfers in the world, minus the nine ineligible LIV players. It’s been a huge success that’s almost universally embraced by the players.

Bohls: Spieth falters again at the Dell

So it makes little sense that the WGC-Dell Match Play is going away for good after Sunday. In the city that always keeps it weird, how weird is that, especially since there are zero plans for the PGA Tour to replace it with another match play event elsewhere?

“I would love to see there still be a match play event at some point,” said Rickie Fowler, who didn’t make it out of group play. “I prefer kind of the 64 knockout (from the start). But it’s fun. We obviously wouldn’t want it every week just because of how volatile it is, but I would love to see a form of it be in the future on the Tour.”

Fowler’s sentiments have been pretty much shared by all in the field and most who have been associated with the event.

“It’s a bittersweet time,” ACC golf pro emeritus Dale Morgan said. “We’ve had a great run, and we’re going to have a great champion. And who knows? Maybe someday we’ll get another tournament here with a different format.”

It gave as much as we got, and I’m not just talking the $6 million donated to Dell Children’s Medical Center and First Tee. Upwards of 10,000 a day have walked through the gates to see golf royalty.

Golden: Boom or bust for the Texas men

And while we’re used to saying goodbye to Austin institutions such as Threadgill’s and Armadillo World Headquarters and Hut’s and Players — the hamburger joint, not TPC Sawgrass — it’s incredibly sad to lose something so special. Just when the Austin metro area is neck-deep in international events and high-caliber sports such as South by Southwest, the Austin City Limits Music Festival, Formula One racing, MLS soccer and Triple-A baseball and doesn’t really need more top-shelf stuff, the city is losing a remarkable sporting event.

But at least we still have pickleball. And, we hope, Muny.

We’ve seen our share of history.

We saw the tournament help launch the practically homegrown Scheffler as the game’s next superstar, a meteoric ascent for the Longhorn ex that spawned a Dell title to go with a runner-up finish and a Masters championship. He outlasted J.T. Poston with three late birdies for his ninth straight match victory here to advance into the Elite Eight, and there’s a lot of that going on these days.

On Saturday, Scheffler came within 2 inches of acing the 17th hole and beat Day 2 and 1 to win his 10th straight match and reach Sunday's semifinals. He'll face LSU ex and good buddy Sam Burns, who got the better of Mackenzie Hughes 3 and 2 to improve his record to 5-0 in his tournament debut. Burns toppled Scheffler in last year's Colonial, beating him in a playoff with a 38-foot putt off the green.

“He is pretty competitive,” Scheffler said of Burns. “I’ve been taking him on my team in pickleball recently. Usually, when he gets on the other team I’ll beat him pretty handily in that one, so pickleball for me is not much of a challenge."

Heck, Scottie’s almost as famous as Bijan Robinson, the Texas running back/Austin mayor who traded cellphone numbers with Tampa Bay’s new quarterback, Baker Mayfield, as he followed Scheffler on the back nine of his win over Poston on the final hole.

“I came out to support Scottie,” said Robinson, decked out in a bright burnt orange shirt. “He’s a Texas grad, and I’m just a sports fan. I love to watch golf.”

More: Longhorns focused on Miami in the Elite Eight

We saw Day break in the event with a stirring wire-to-wire victory in 2016 with a perfect 7-0 record during his five-day assault on the course but also tearfully withdraw to be with his mother battling lung cancer. But he bested Louie Oosthuizen for the title in ’16, and sponsor Michael Dell walked the back nine and openly worried that King Louie could win because “I’m not sure how to pronounce his last name.” Alas, Day won 5 and 4 to spare him concern.

We saw Sergio Garcia and Matt Kuchar feud for a moment over what’s a conceded putt and what isn’t, but they kissed and made up.

We saw Dustin Johnson bomb the layout and take down Jon Rahm, but we can’t remember if he ever even made it to the 18th green, he was so dominant.

We applauded Tommy Fleetwood’s ace on the par-3 fourth hole last year and Garcia’s the year before.

We've seen Scheffler and Jordan Spieth serenaded with "Texas Fight" from the party boats on Lake Austin.

"Even if I wasn't winning I'd be sorry to leave this place," Scheffler said, having won 10 straight matches here. "This is a great tournament and the fans here are amazing and it's very fun to play in front of them. Yeah, we're for sure going to miss this place a lot."

More: Morehouse leads Texas past Texas Tech

Heck, we even witnessed the Tiger Woods Affect as golf’s No. 1 citizen graced us with his red-shirted presence and wowed us with an eagle from 82 yards out to whip Rory McIlroy in the Sweet 16 . Too bad he lost to Lucas Bjerregaard 1 up in the 2019 quarterfinals. McIlroy has survived in this year's marathon and will square off against 15th seed Cameron Young, who's yet to win on Tour but has five runnerup finishes.

This week we saw Scheffler continue his spectacular play without so much as a hiccup. He was one of five of the top 16 seeds — including three of the past five champions — to move on to the Saturday afternoon quarterfinals. All four semifinalists are ranked among the top 15 seeds in the Dell.

We’ve also observed Bubba Watson’s pink golf balls and experienced Ian Poulter’s candor, Paul Casey’s friendliness and Brooks Koepka’s gruffness.

We saw McIlroy speak out in favor of controlling the unfathomable distances with a tamer golf ball, then blast his tee shot from the 18th tee to the fringe just right of the green to edge 46th seed Lucas Herbert, who played masterfully after a horrific time at the Players.

But that’s the unpredictability of this unforgiving format.

“This 18th hole has been good to me over the week,” McIlroy said after holding off Herbert. “It would be nice not to have to play it.”

We cringed with every Spieth missed putt or watery tee shot as he came up short of the knockout stage once more and walked away with frustration.

We watched as Match Play master Bill Horschel didn't trail in a match until Saturday’s fourth round and advanced to the Sweet 16 once more. But we waved a fond goodbye to 2021 champion and 2022 runner-up Kevin Kisner, who won only one of his three group play matches.

And after we watch Sunday’s drama, we’ll say goodbye to one of the coolest, kid-friendliest sporting events that has ever made Austin home, albeit far too briefly. The PGA Tour will pull up stakes and bid adieu to Austin Country Club because … well, that’s a very curious subject.

The relationship soured in the past year because (1) LIV golf drastically altered the sport’s culture forever and its way of doing business, (2) the PGA Tour got greedy, (3) ACC membership got greedy and tired of the course being shut down for four weeks a year for course prep and the tournament, (4) the golfers got tired of Kisner and Horschel schooling them, (5) it has to be Patrick Reed’s fault, right? (6) some nonsense about elevated tournaments, (7) it ran its course, or (8) nothing lasts forever.

Take your pick. But don’t blame Kiz or Billy. Has to be the Saudis’ fault.

It’s most likely a combination of confluences. The Tour stonewalled the club in negotiations for months after a great offer of $3 million from ACC. Some powerful ACC pooh-bahs didn’t want to renew the contract and never took any proposal to a membership vote. (Hey, it’s a private club.) Then there’s the drastic upheaval brought on by the no-cut, 54-hole, turn-up-the-loud-music, who-cares-who’s-watching-or-if-anybody-at-all-is-watching grinch that is LIV golf.

A shame, no matter where the fault lies.

It’s been a stirring event full of spectacular play and fascinating personalities and a captivating tournament that no doubt has inspired some 8-year-old to take up the game with hopes of becoming the next Scheffler.

It’s equally sad that the PGA Tour has no plans to stage a match-play event on next year’s schedule.

Golf needs this once-in-a-blue moon format, if not to better prepare Americans for play in the Ryder Cup and Presidents Cup, at least to provide a change of pace for the golfers, an opportunity for the best in the world to compete and offer some different entertainment.

But we do get that it’s not the best ratings blockbuster on television since the format allows for only four golfers left standing for the Sunday semifinal and final rounds.

Few love this event more than Day, who battled Scheffler head to head in the quarterfinals.

“I do (love it). It's a great match play golf course,” Day said. “It just presents so well. The holes down on the water. It's definitely going to be sad to see this go.”

It will because for seven straight days, Austinites can follow every shot by these top-flight golfers in person and then wonder why they can’t drive the ball as far as McIlroy on Monday.

As Herbert said before bowing out against McIlroy, “It’s just a lot of good positives to take into the future. But yeah, just sucks that I came up against the best player in the world today.”

True. But they’re almost everywhere you look on the course.

But only for one more day.

The architect of the Travis Club, which officially broke ground this week near Austin, Welling insisted what drew him to this project was the idea that a golf course can do more than just determine a handicap. In fact, he said in his first meetings about the property, the conversation had more to do with experience than it did layout.

“We didn’t talk about golf holes. We talked about what this project could mean to the community, even the greater community of Austin and the Hill Country and I immediately was attracted to that,” Welling said during his introductory speech on Tuesday, noting that at 54 his best playing days are behind him, but he still finds happiness on the golf course.

Golfweek’s Best: Top public and private courses in Texas

“The light bulb that went off was that golf was something that attracts people together to have these human moments, create memories and be together. And I think we all learn kind of going through the pandemic that we as a species like we need to be around other people. Well, golf is an incredible fosterer of that. And that’s kind of what we talked about in some of our initial conversations.

“I think about my life and half the memories of my father on the golf course, half my friends come from the golf course. And I think what’s driven our practice really is trying to take our craft, the golf course design and create golf experiences that allow people to have these human moments.”

Although he hails from South Carolina, Welling is familiar with the Lone Star State, having crafted one of the two golf courses at Fields Ranch , the PGA of America’s new masterpiece in Frisco, as well as Bluejack National outside Houston and Escondido near Marble Falls.

Cloudy day, but this will eventually be the fifth hole at Travis Club, a new golf community to be shaped by @beauwelling near Austin, Texas. The official groundbreaking ceremony was Tuesday. pic.twitter.com/rOjMXFYcy1 — Tim Schmitt (@TMSGolfweek) April 24, 2024

And while he talked primarily about relationships, he did add that the piece of property where the signature fifth hole sits — the site of Tuesday’s groundbreaking — should be special. The hole will likely max out at about 221 yards from the back tee, offering a spectacular view of the lake and its surroundings.

“You look here at this setting like this, when the lake fills back up it’s going to be super dramatic. It’s super dramatic right now with this big ravine, this big canyon,” Welling said. “Alister MacKenzie, the designer of Augusta National, Cypress Point and Royal Melbourne, he said that the chief consideration of any good golf hole is this idea of drama or overcoming a hazard and that all good golf holes have that. And so we will have tons and tons of drama throughout the experience that will be the Travis Club.”

The first phase of the project, which includes 106 home sites, is about half-sold and the remaining sites, which range from a half-acre to just under three acres, start at about $800,000.

“We are thrilled to introduce this new lake and golf community on Lake Travis. What sets this project apart is the unique natural beauty and recreational opportunities that Lake Travis offers. We have designed Travis Club intentionally by taking great care to preserve and complement the local environment and surroundings, with over 50% of the property dedicated to golf, open space, or conservation areas,” said Leisha Ehlert, CEO of Travis Club. “We have integrated the stunning lakeside views and lush landscapes with the development of exceptional facilities, providing members and their families the ability to enjoy the serenity of lakeside living while having access to a world-class golf and recreation experience.”

Phillips carded a career-low 10-under 61 in the first round that included three eagles on his way to a third-place finish, his second top-three of the season. After starting the season with back-to-back missed cuts in the Bahamas, Phillips has made the cut in seven straight starts and is up to No. 5 on the Korn Ferry Tour points list. Cummins tied his career low with an 8-under 63 in the second round and tied for fifth, his third top-10 finish of 2024.
