Can You Shoot at Pirates on a Luxury Cruise Along the Somali Coast?

"the object of the cruise is to sail up and down the somali coast waiting to get hijacked by pirates.", snopes staff, published july 1, 2009.

False

About this rating

In the fall of 2008, the United Nations Security Council passed Resolution 1838, which called on nations with vessels in the waters near Somalia to apply military force to repress acts of piracy along that coastline. While pirates had been plying their trade in area since the early 1990s, the rate of such incidents had markedly increased by 2007 and 2008. Pirates either overrun ships and take their cargoes or they kidnap passengers to hold for ransom.

Attention was focused on this issue by two incidents that occurred in April 2009: six armed pirates in a speedboat attacked the Italian cruise ship Melody off the coast of Somalia (but were foiled when the Melody 's captain ordered his security crew to fire back), and Somali pirates seized the Maersk Alabama , a relief ship laden with supplies destined for Somalia, Uganda, and Kenya. The Maersk Alabama 's captain, Richard Phillips, was taken hostage; and when his life appeared in danger, U.S. Navy snipers killed three of the four pirates and effected his release. These successful defensive acts against Somali pirates were widely applauded by those who favor countering aggression with aggression over slowly negotiating for the release of hostages taken captive by pirates and then forking over hefty ransoms for their safe return.

This mood of hearty approval over those responses may have inspired a satirical piece about pirate-hunting cruises aboard luxury yachts plying the coast of Somalia, trolling for buccaneers to blast to smithereens:

THE ULTIMATE ADVENTURE CRUISE To The Point Cruise Line is excited to offer the ultimate adventure cruise along the pirate-infested coast of Somalia! We board our luxury cruise ship in Djibouti on the Gulf of Aden near the entrance to the Red Sea, and disembark in Mombassa, Kenya, seven adrenaline-charged days later. Starting at $5,200 per-person (double occupancy, inside room) and $6,900 (veranda complete with bench rest), you'll relax like never before. That's because you are welcome to bring your own arsenal with you. If you don't have your own weapons, you can rent them from our onboard Master Gunsmith. Enjoy reloading parties every afternoon with skeet and marksmanship competitions every night! But the best fun of all, of course, is Pirate Target Practice. For the object of the cruise is to sail up and down the Somali Coast waiting to get hijacked by pirates. The weapons rental costs are as follows. Rent a full auto M-16 for only $25/day with ammo attractively priced at $16 per 100 rounds of 5.56 armor-piercing: On a budget? Rent a full-auto scope-mounted AK-47 for only $9/day with 7.62 ball ammo at $12 per 100 rounds: Hello! Nothing gets a pirate's attention like a Barrett M-107 50-cal sniper rifle; only $59/day with 25 rounds of armor-piercing ammo affordably priced at only $29.95. Need a spotter? Our professional crew members can double as spotters for only $30/hour (spotting scope included, but gratuities are not.) Want to make a real impact? Rent an RPG for only $175/day with three fragmentation rounds included! Also included: Free complimentary night vision equipment - and throughout the night, coffee, pastries and snacks are always available on the main deck from 7pm until 6am. Our deluxe package comes complete with gourmet meals and all rooms offer a mini-bar. But that's not all! Twin mounted miniguns are available for rental at only $450.00 per 30 seconds of sustained fire! We guarantee that you will experience at least two hijacking attempts by pirates or you'll receive an instant $1,000 refund upon arrival in Mombassa. How can we make that guarantee? We operate at 5 knots just beyond 12 nautical miles off the coast of Somalia, thus in international waters where pirates have no rights whatever. In fact, we make three passes through the area's most treacherous waters to ensure maximum visibility by Somali "mother ships". We repeat this for five days, making three complete passes past the entire Somali Coast. At night, the boat is fully lit and bottle rockets are shot every five minutes with loud disco music directionally beamed shoreside to attract maximum attention. Testimonials from previous participants in the Somali Cruise: "Six attacks in 4 days were more than I expected. I bagged three pirates, my wife nailed two, and my 12-year old son sank two boats with the mini-gun. This wonderful cruise was fun for the whole family" — Fred D., Cincinnati , OH "Pirates 0, Passengers 32! Well worth the trip! Can't recommend it highly enough!" — Ben L., Bethesda , MD "I haven't had this much fun since flying choppers in ' Nam. Don't worry about getting shot by pirates... they never even got close to the ship with the crap they shoot and their lousy aim... reminds me of a drunken juicer door-gunner we picked up from the motor pool in Phu Bai!" — Dan J. - Denver , CO Come on board and bag your own clutch of genuine Somali pirates! But cabin space is limited so you need to respond quickly. Reserve your package before May 31st and get a great bonus - 100 rounds of free tracer ammo in the caliber of your choice. So sign up for the Ultimate Somali Coast Adventure Cruise now!   Luxury yachts offer pirate hunting cruises Luxury ocean liners in Russia are offering pirate hunting cruises aboard armed private yachts off the Somali coast. Wealthy hunters pay £3,500 per day to patrol the most dangerous waters in the world hoping to be attacked by raiders. When attacked, they retaliate with grenade launchers, machine guns and rocket launchers, reports Austrian business paper Wirtschaftsblatt. Passengers, who can pay an extra £5 a day for an AK-47 machine gun and £7 for 100 rounds of ammo, are also protected by a squad of ex special forces troops. The yachts travel from Djibouti in Somalia to Mombasa in Kenya. The ships deliberately cruise close to the coast at a speed of just five nautical miles in an attempt to attract the interest of pirates. "They are worse than the pirates," said Russian yachtsman Vladimir Mironov. "At least the pirates have the decency to take hostages, these people are just paying to commit murder," he continued.

That satirical item was a 7 May 2009 article written for, and posted to, the humor section of the web site To the Point News . The joke was subsequently picked up and reworked by another web site, Somali Cruises .

As an editor at the Cruise Critic web site observed of this improbable business scheme:

Common sense would likely tell most of us that the idea is ridiculously absurd. The last time we checked, killing people is illegal, and arming blood-thirsty, inexperienced cruise passengers with high-powered weapons is probably not a good idea. (It's also doubtful that John Doe would have much success filing a travel insurance claim after accidentally blowing off his own foot with an M-16.)

Nonetheless, after the Ananova online news site presented the Somali pirate cruise send-up as a factual item, several other news outlets and publications (including Canada's National Post newspaper) picked up the story and ran it as true, thereby fostering belief that the spoof "pirates cruises" were a real offering.

Ananova.   "Luxury Yachts Offer Pirate Hunting Cruises."     25 June 2009.

CNN.   "Italian Cruise Ship Thwarts Pirate Attack."     26 April 2009.

National Post.   "Armed Private Yachts Offering Pirate-Hunting Cruises Off Somalia."     25 June 2009.

Sunday Mercury.   "Crazy World."     28 June 2009   (p. 26).

Black Raven Adventures

Black Raven Adventures hosts the only live and interactive pirate cruises in St. Augustine. The Black Raven was designed and built to be a floating performance stage, and the talented crew of buccaneer lads and lasses engage with the audience as they present their live, unscripted show on all things pirate. Black Raven Adventures offers several different cruising options.

Please note that the start times change with the clocks in March and November.

Treasure Hunt — Suitable for all Ages

The show starts when a small group of pirates from Queen Anne's Revenge steal the treasure chest from the stalwart Black Raven crew. A sea chase, sword fight, and cannon fire culminate in a sea battle between the two ships. Along the way, there are plenty of activities for kids and adults, including treasure sharing, sword fighting lessons, face painting, and the opportunity to purchase food and snacks from the ship's bar.

The tour departs in the early afternoon at 2:15 p.m. in the winter and at 1:15 and 4:15 p.m. in the summer.

Tickets are $42.95 for adults, $32.95 for children ages 3-12, and toddlers two and under are $9.95.

Black Raven Pirate Ship in St. Augustine, Florida.

Rum Runners — Adults 21+ Only

This adult-oriented and audience-driven show is not for the easily offended and is full of outrageous fun aboard ship. Guests enjoy a mix of songs, jokes, skits, and stories, all delivered pirate-style and unscripted, as the lively crew interacts with the audience. A cash bar is available.

The tour departs on Fridays and Saturdays at 7:15 p.m. in the winter and 8:15 p.m. in the summer.

Tickets are $34.95 per person. This is an adult cruise, and those 21 and over may purchase tickets. A parent on the trip may purchase a ticket for a young adult child who is 18 and older.

Birthday Adventures

This special pirate adventure combines a birthday party with a treasure hunt featuring swordplay, pirate treasure, and cupcakes. With a focus on the birthday guests of honor, this cruise includes a fight with pirate thieves, just as the regular pirate adventure does. Each child celebrating a birthday on board can, if the parents choose, receive a treasure chest with gifts delivered by the pirates aboard the Queen Ann's Revenge . All children get a loot bag and all passengers are served a cupcake and soft drinks.

The tour departs on Saturdays at 12:15 p.m. in the cooler months and at 11:15 a.m. after the clocks change.

Tickets are $42.95 for adults, $32.95 for children aged 3 - 12, and $9.95 for toddlers two and under. Call to find out ticket prices for groups of ten or more. This Treasure Hunt cruise is public and welcomes guests not part of the birthday party.

Birthday Party for Adults 21 and Over

A mutiny trial for the birthday celebrant can be arranged during the Rum Runners Adventure. The charges for the public mutiny will be crimes reported by the celebrant's friends and family. Once the trial is over, the birthday guest will receive a present from Black Raven's crew.

The birthday mutiny is $95.00 plus tax, in addition to the group's tickets.

Tropical Sunset Cruise

This two-hour cruise sails north toward Vilano while the temperature and drinks head south to the tropics. With margaritas and mai-tais at the cash bar and warm ocean breezes, the only thing missing would be music by Jimmy Buffet or Bob Marley. Black Raven' s Steed McQueen fills the void with guitar and vocals — featuring (of course) music by Jimmy Buffet and Bob Marley. This cruise is open to all ages: $44.95 for adults, $34.95 per child, and $9.95 for those two and under.

Paying Money to Murder: Russian Luxury Yachts Offer Pirate Hunting Cruises

The yacht tour promises photogenic sunsets… and heavy artillery.

Last month, I talked with an official of the U.S. Navy and asked him about the military’s role in preventing and responding to piracy. “We’re working on it,” he said with obvious frustration. “But it’s not an easy thing; you’re in international waters, there are all sorts of other competing interests….” He trailed off and then changed the subject, clearly annoyed by constraints that prevent direct action.

He might be interested in Russia’s new strategy for responding to piracy: folding anti-piracy actions into its tourism industry.

In a brilliant–if deeply disturbing–stroke of entrepreneurial genius, Russian luxury yachts have begun to advertise adventure cruises where passengers pony up almost $6,000 USD per day to cruise from Djibouti to Mombasa in search of pirates.

The yachts trawl at a deliberately slow speed, hoping to attract pirates. If attacked, the cruise passengers are ready to respond with heavy machinery: machine guns and grenade and rocket launchers. And if they want to tack on an extra $8.00 a day, passengers can hoist their very own AK-47. Ammo, though, costs an extra $11.50.

There’s no word yet on whether any of the passengers have successfully taken out any pirates… or whether there’s a money-back guarantee if a showdown fails to occur.

“They are worse than the pirates,” said Russian yachtsman Vladimir Mironov. “At least the pirates have the decency to take hostages, these people are just paying to commit murder.”

If you have children ages 2-10, DO THIS! From start to finish, they had so much fun planned for the kids. The bar and scenery was fun for the adults. I've paid a heck of a lot more money at Disney and had a heck of a lot less fun!

Thank you so much!

Oh my goodness this completely exceeded our expectations! It was absolutely wonderful! The staff were in costume and occupied the kids with all sorts of games, and gave them pirate hats. The captain pirate was also the MC and was really funny. The kids had an absolute BLAST! Two full hours of entertainment, and the ship was super clean. I was so impressed with the bathrooms! They had water gun wars, did a solemn oath of pirate allegiance (hilarious), for face paint and temporary tattoos, and let every single kid get a handful of prizes from the treasure chest. I would come back to this every year if we could! Such a fun adventure!

Thank you so much for sharing your experience and the 5 stars!

This was so fun! They had fun activities for the kids while we sailed that lasted two hours. My son is in a wheelchair and was not able to go down the stairs to the "dungeon" for a story and one of the pirates stayed with him on the deck and told him the story so he wouldn't miss out. They did face/arm paining in the galley and he was not able to fit in there either so the pirate came out and gave him his on the deft as well. This was such a amazing surprise for them to remember him and include him in the activity because that doesn't happen often especially without me asking for them to include him somehow. We saw dolphins which was great! They kids found buried treasure. We got photos with the pirates. Definitely recommend!

pirate hunting cruise

If you've got kids, this is a "must do" activity while you're in PCB! The cruise is about two hours, and the kids were kept busy with a variety of "pirate activities". We even managed to see several dolphins and a few deer on the shore. They have a bar and snack bar in case you get hungry. The crew was fun and friendly and the ship was well maintained. Book early if you can.... It seems as if the sunset cruises book up a couple days in advance.

Arrrggggg fabulous way to spend time with the family out on the water! We took a relaxing sunset cruise that lasted 2 hours and the best part was how much fun the kids had while on board! The crew kept them entertained and we were able to sit back, relax and enjoy the sunset! Our children are 9 & 12 and both had a blast...literally! They were able to shoot the cannons, squirt each other with water guns, explore the dungeon, get tattoos, face paint and pull up buried treasure! I would say the ideal age for kids is between 4-12 yrs old. There are drinks and snacks aboard and don't worry if you can't find a seat at the start of the cruise, once the activities begin the kids are up and at em the entire time! Be sure to bring cash for goodies and don't forget to tip the crew at the end of the journey! Ahoy!

Very much a must do thing if you have little kids. A super awesome adventure with cannons, sword fights, and treasure hunt! Parents aren't allowed to work, and the pirate staff keep the kids moving through the trip. The captain finds the water without waves so your kiddos have a blast.

What a fun evening! My kids are 3 and 7 and had an absolute blast tonight on the Sea Dragon. The crew was wonderful and kept all the kiddos entertained and happy the entire 2 hours-which is a feat in itself! I highly recommend booking this- worth every cent!

Didn't say anything about putting 2 tours together, which lead to chaos. Not everyone could sit down so that lead to 1/3 of the people standing along the rail. Due to overcrowding, children's activities were not properly executed, which could lead to someone getting hurt. One young guy in particular, was not that respectful to our toddler entertainment wise. Not that fair that we had all those problems cause of overcrowding, but still payed the same price as others. Overall, it was still fun and everyone had a good time. Just wish it was executed properly. We took our tour on Monday, at 5:45.

Cruising the Moskva River: A short guide to boat trips in Russia’s capital

pirate hunting cruise

There’s hardly a better way to absorb Moscow’s atmosphere than on a ship sailing up and down the Moskva River. While complicated ticketing, loud music and chilling winds might dampen the anticipated fun, this checklist will help you to enjoy the scenic views and not fall into common tourist traps.

How to find the right boat?

There are plenty of boats and selecting the right one might be challenging. The size of the boat should be your main criteria.

Plenty of small boats cruise the Moskva River, and the most vivid one is this yellow Lay’s-branded boat. Everyone who has ever visited Moscow probably has seen it.

pirate hunting cruise

This option might leave a passenger disembarking partially deaf as the merciless Russian pop music blasts onboard. A free spirit, however, will find partying on such a vessel to be an unforgettable and authentic experience that’s almost a metaphor for life in modern Russia: too loud, and sometimes too welcoming. Tickets start at $13 (800 rubles) per person.

Bigger boats offer smoother sailing and tend to attract foreign visitors because of their distinct Soviet aura. Indeed, many of the older vessels must have seen better days. They are still afloat, however, and getting aboard is a unique ‘cultural’ experience. Sometimes the crew might offer lunch or dinner to passengers, but this option must be purchased with the ticket. Here is one such  option  offering dinner for $24 (1,490 rubles).

pirate hunting cruise

If you want to travel in style, consider Flotilla Radisson. These large, modern vessels are quite posh, with a cozy restaurant and an attentive crew at your service. Even though the selection of wines and food is modest, these vessels are still much better than other boats.

pirate hunting cruise

Surprisingly, the luxurious boats are priced rather modestly, and a single ticket goes for $17-$32 (1,100-2,000 rubles); also expect a reasonable restaurant bill on top.

How to buy tickets?

Women holding photos of ships promise huge discounts to “the young and beautiful,” and give personal invitations for river tours. They sound and look nice, but there’s a small catch: their ticket prices are usually more than those purchased online.

“We bought tickets from street hawkers for 900 rubles each, only to later discover that the other passengers bought their tickets twice as cheap!”  wrote  (in Russian) a disappointed Rostislav on a travel company website.

Nevertheless, buying from street hawkers has one considerable advantage: they personally escort you to the vessel so that you don’t waste time looking for the boat on your own.

pirate hunting cruise

Prices start at $13 (800 rubles) for one ride, and for an additional $6.5 (400 rubles) you can purchase an unlimited number of tours on the same boat on any given day.

Flotilla Radisson has official ticket offices at Gorky Park and Hotel Ukraine, but they’re often sold out.

Buying online is an option that might save some cash. Websites such as  this   offer considerable discounts for tickets sold online. On a busy Friday night an online purchase might be the only chance to get a ticket on a Flotilla Radisson boat.

This  website  (in Russian) offers multiple options for short river cruises in and around the city center, including offbeat options such as ‘disco cruises’ and ‘children cruises.’ This other  website  sells tickets online, but doesn’t have an English version. The interface is intuitive, however.

Buying tickets online has its bad points, however. The most common is confusing which pier you should go to and missing your river tour.

pirate hunting cruise

“I once bought tickets online to save with the discount that the website offered,” said Igor Shvarkin from Moscow. “The pier was initially marked as ‘Park Kultury,’ but when I arrived it wasn’t easy to find my boat because there were too many there. My guests had to walk a considerable distance before I finally found the vessel that accepted my tickets purchased online,” said the man.

There are two main boarding piers in the city center:  Hotel Ukraine  and  Park Kultury . Always take note of your particular berth when buying tickets online.

Where to sit onboard?

Even on a warm day, the headwind might be chilly for passengers on deck. Make sure you have warm clothes, or that the crew has blankets ready upon request.

The glass-encased hold makes the tour much more comfortable, but not at the expense of having an enjoyable experience.

pirate hunting cruise

Getting off the boat requires preparation as well. Ideally, you should be able to disembark on any pier along the way. In reality, passengers never know where the boat’s captain will make the next stop. Street hawkers often tell passengers in advance where they’ll be able to disembark. If you buy tickets online then you’ll have to research it yourself.

There’s a chance that the captain won’t make any stops at all and will take you back to where the tour began, which is the case with Flotilla Radisson. The safest option is to automatically expect that you’ll return to the pier where you started.

Russian Commandos Arrest Pirates, Free Tanker

May 6, 2010 / 2:01 AM EDT / AP

Russian special forces rappelled onto a disabled oil tanker taken over by Somali pirates, freeing 23 Russian sailors and arresting the pirates during a dawn raid Thursday, the commander of the EU Naval Force said.

The raid against the Liberian-flagged ship Moscow University came 24 hours after pirates had taken the ship over and the crew locked itself in a safe room. The vessel is carrying 86,000 tons of crude oil worth about $50 million.

The special forces had been aboard the Russian anti-submarine destroyer Marshal Shaposhnikov, which rushed to the scene after Wednesday's attack. The special forces boarded a helicopter and rappelled down to the Moscow University, Rear Adm. Jan Thornqvist, force commander of the EU Naval Force, told The Associated Press.

Shots were fired during the raid but no one was injured, Thornqvist said.

Russian Defense Ministry spokesman Col. Alexei Kuznetsov said the pirates are being held aboard the tanker. Russian news agencies reported the death of one pirate during the raid, but Kuznetsov told AP that information was still being looked into.

The crew of the Moscow University had previously told officials they believed the pirates were trying to enter the engine room, Thornqvist said. The ship had been disabled and was not moving. Safe rooms, where crews seek shelter, are typically stocked with food, water and communications equipment and have reinforced doors that can only be opened from the inside.

The ship's owner, Novoship, said in a statement that the decision to free the ship was made knowing "that the crew was under safe cover inaccessible to the pirates and that the lives and health of the sailors was not threatened by anything."

"Excellent Operation All Around"

Cmdr. John Harbour, a spokesman for the EU Naval Force, called the rescue "an excellent operation all around." He said the EU Naval Force had been working at a tactical level with the Russians, and that EU Naval Force personnel talked to the Russian crew by VHF radio. He said the EU had offered support to the Russians.

The attack occurred about 500 miles (800 kilometers) east of the Somali coast. The ship was not registered with the Maritime Security Center, said Harbour. The ship's route was from the Red Sea to China, the ship's owner said.

Novoship is a subsidiary of Sovcomflot, which is owned by the Russian government.

The fact that Russian special forces stormed the Moscow University shortly after it was taken over is in line with a trend by international military forces who are more aggressively combating piracy.

In February, Danish special forces prevented the hijacking of a ship after pirates had boarded it. Special forces from the Danish Absalon boarded the Ariella while the crew locked themselves in a secure room.

EU Naval Force ships are disrupting pirate groups and destroying their ships at a much higher rate than in previous years. U.S. warships have fired back on pirates and destroyed their boats in several skirmishes in the last several weeks.

Pirates currently hold more than 300 hostages taken from ships attacked off East Africa in the last several months. Eleven suspected Somali pirates were indicted in U.S. federal court late last month, but the international community has had problems formulating an accepted policy to try and jail pirate suspects.

Along with the increased pressure by international navies against pirates has come some criticism.

On Wednesday, a French prosecutor said a French rescuer was responsible for killing the skipper of a sailboat hijacked by Somali pirates during a rescue operation.

Chief prosecutor Hever Pavy in the western French city of Rennes said investigators found a French military bullet had killed Florent Lemacon in April 2009 when a special intervention team came to rescue his yacht, the Tanit, off the Somali coast.

I'm scared for tom cruise if mission: impossible 8 doesn't end the franchise.

  • Mission: Impossible 8 may be the end of Tom Cruise's action franchise, sparking debate on his potential departure.
  • The new sequel needs to bring Ethan Hunt's story to a close, exploring his psyche and loneliness without his team.
  • Ending the Mission: Impossible franchise is best for Tom Cruise's safety, allowing him to pursue other roles and avoid further risks.

There's a chance that Mission: Impossible 8 is the end of Tom Cruise's action franchise, and I'm scared for him if it doesn't. Reports of the Mission: Impossible franchise preparing for Tom Cruise's exit after the seventh and eighth installments first circulated in early 2022. This immediately kicked off a debate about whether the action star would really be willing to permanently walk away from his biggest franchise. Cruise has done his part to push back on the idea he's prepping to leave Mission: Impossible and tell audiences Ethan Hunt could remain in the franchise for years to come.

For anyone who has followed and loved the Mission: Impossible movies as much as I have, the idea of losing Tom Cruise is a difficult one to process. Cruise is the franchise in many ways , as it is his fearlessness as an action star that helped transform the spy films into massive global action epics. The series tried to replace Cruise before and failed, and a Mission: Impossible movie where he isn't around would be strange, even if there is room to explore other characters. But, I hope Mission: Impossible 8 really is the end for him and the franchise.

Is Mission: Impossible 9 Happening? Franchise Update Is A Good Sign For Tom Cruise's Return

A new update for the Mission: Impossible franchise's future sounds like a good sign that Tom Cruise will return. Will it be in Mission: Impossible 9?

Mission: Impossible 8 Needs To Bring Ethan Hunt's Story To A Close After Dead Reckoning

It's time for ethan to say goodbye.

Mission: Impossible - Dead Reckoning was an excellent start to what can be the end of Ethan Hunt's story by the time Mission: Impossible 8 rolls around. Watching Ethan's past come into play and grapple with the reality that he cannot save everyone was truly thrilling, and the emotional consequences put him in a different mindset than the franchise has previously explored. Mission: Impossible 8 is brilliantly positioned to continue down this path and explore Ethan feeling like he is the only person who can keep the world safe from The Entity and other threats.

With Ethan set to be mostly isolated and without his team, Mission: Impossible 8 can dive deeper into his psyche and story all as part of giving him a fitting conclusion. The next sequel needs to tell a story of the often lonely IMF agent coming to grips with his own mortality, becoming willing to fully trust others, and push his hubris aside. By doing this, Mission: Impossible 8 can end Ethan Hunt's story in a place where he's ready to retire, knowing that there are others who can keep the world protected - which would be quite satisfying.

Mission: Impossible Ending Is What's Best For Tom Cruise

He can't do these stunts forever.

Ethan Hunt's arc coming to an end in Mission: Impossible 8 instead of needlessly continuing on for more adventures is also a benefit for Tom Cruise. For as much enjoyment I and others have had watching Tom Cruise perform dangerous Mission: Impossible stunts , there is always the thought that he could one day push himself too far. All the safety precautions and practices are a great way to try and prevent tragedy, but his showmanship and desire to top himself keep amplifying the risk involved . The best way to prevent something horrible from happening is for Mission: Impossible to end.

Cruise already broke his foot on Mission: Impossible - Fallout , and while he's managed to avoid any further serious injuries, that outcome becomes a greater fear with each new film - especially as he enters his 60s. Leaving Mission: Impossible might sound risky for his career, but doing so would create a major opening in his usual schedule. He has Top Gun 3 and other action movie roles to satisfy himself and audiences moving forward, as well as mixing in some more dramatic work again. Mission: Impossible 8 ending the franchise and Cruise's time in it can make this happen.

MOSCOW — A Russian Navy destroyer has fended off a pirate attack on a container ship near the western coast of Africa, Russia’s Defence Ministry said on Tuesday.

Destroyer Vice Admiral Kulakov received a distress signal from Panama-registered container ship Lucia en route from Togo to Cameroon on Monday, the ministry said in a statement, and dispatched a unit of marines on a helicopter to it.

The pirates immediately fled, allowing Russian soldiers to free the ship’s crew.

The Russian destroyer was part of a group patrolling the Gulf of Guinea to ensure the security of civilian navigation. (Reporting by Olzhas Auyezov Editing by Raissa Kasolowsky)
