The story of the birth of the palace started when Pratap visited Jhunjhunu and saw Khetri Mahal.Maharaj was impressed by the unique design of the Khetri Mahal, and that was when he decided to create a better version of it. Lal Chand Ustad designed this palace and ended up making one of the best monuments history has ever created. The primary purpose for creating this palace was to give royal women a separate place. It has five floors adorned with 953 jharokhas and latticework. The technology of Venturi effect is utilised well to make the air coming inside the palace cool. This effect always helped the Hawa Mahal stay serene and pleasant, so royal women never had a problem staying here in hot temperatures. At several times, the entire royal family used to get together here and escape the summers together. This honeycomb-like monument is a proud heritage left by the bygone era, which is an integral part of the history as well as architecture.

7 royal meals to have in Jaipur
By Shalbha Sarda
During your trip to Jaipur, you see forts, and palaces, hear the stories of glory and valour, feel the history wafting in the air, and wonder what life would be like, as a king or a queen. Good news! You do not need a royal bloodline for royal treatment in Jaipur. Think rose petal showers, traditional rituals and eating off precious metal dinnerware in a palatial setting. At these restaurants in Jaipur, you can dine on specially curated menus at an exclusive table for you to pamper 'the highness' in you!
Where to eat like royalty in Jaipur
Kigelia Court Restaurant, Royal Heritage Haveli, Khatipura
The bonfire at Kigelia Court Restaurant
The luxury hotel was a former hunting lodge of the royal family, built in the 18th century by Madho Singh, the former ruler of the kingdom of Jaipur. If you are looking for royal touch beyond ambience and food, book the culinary experience to uncover the lost recipes of the Khatipura kitchen. The young Princess Kumari Shambhavi of Gamph learned these recipes from her grandmother. The meal itself is a slow and immersive experience: everything is prepared fresh on an earthen flame in ancient copperware by Shambhavi, a graduate of Bengaluru’s Lavonne Academy of Baking Science and Pastry Arts. Huddle under a 200-year-old Kigelia tree (an African tree) at a rustic wooden table with a bonfire close by while the princess accompanies you for a drink and takes you through her royal lineage and the family’s culinary practices. Forget lal maas, as naranagi maas, made with freshly plucked in-house oranges, steals the spotlight here. You would even be satisfied with its vegetarian version, made with jackfruit.
What's on the menu : Argentinian wine, nararangi maas, dal tadka, till ke aloo, papad ki chutney and methi matar. The menu needs to be booked 24 hours in advance. Plot No. 116 & 117, Near Khatipura Tiraya, Khatipura. Website Baradari, City Palace, Gangori Bazaar
This restaurant is located in a Jaipur landmark. Baradari lies deep within the walls of Pink City and right inside the courtyard of the current palatial residence of the Jaipur royal family; The City Palace. The restaurant is a conceptual pavilion with 12 pillars ( baraah dwar), a bar and a dining hall reminiscent of Indo-Saracenic architecture. Pre-book a special dining experience at Baradari and they will make sure you have an amazing night with a flower-laden table lit by candles in antique holders that offset the walls adorned by thikri mirror work, Mughal motifs and photographs of the royals. To amplify your royal experience, the plates at the table bear the seal of the palace and the menu comes with a few favourites that the royals frequently order from their in-house restaurant. What's on the menu : Roasted pumpkin seed soup, mozzarella kachori with potato chaat, wild mushroom risotto, pan-seared salmon with Dijon mustard and curd cheese. Finish the experience with the Baradari signature dessert, apple jalebi, with homemade rose petal ice cream. Jaleb Chowk, City Palace. Instagram
Rajmahal, Oberoi Rajvilas, Goner
Oberoi Rajvilas
Condé Nast Traveller
Laura Lai Coughlin
Geetika Sachdev
While the Oberoi group has turned many a palace into a hotel, for this property, the group built a new structure inspired by Rajasthan’s forts, complete with traditional craftsmanship and architecture across 32 acres. Dinner at the hotel begins with a traditional aarti and rose petal shower. As you are whisked to the Rajmahal restaurant in a golf cart past the colossal gardens, reflecting pools and marble elephant fountains, know that you are just at the beginning of a royal experience in terms of both hospitality and food.
The Rajmahal restaurant operates only six months a year, serving traditional Indian cuisine with a twist. The pavilion is an arched arcade lit by fabric lanterns. Local women from the village nearby dole out fresh rotis of makki and bajra on a chulha in one corner while musicians playing the flute and tabla take centre stage. Start your dinner by cleansing your hands with kaccha doodh or unpasteurised milk, an old cleansing ritual before a meal. Your meal will be a culinary showcase by chef Kushagra Seth, with royal dishes inspired by different dynasties of the country that showcase India as a melting pot of culture and cuisine. What's on the menu : Ghevar ki chaat, khad murg, khumb ki galawat, aamras ki kadhi, anjeer ke kofte with khameeri roti. Babaji Ka Modh, Goner Road, Prem Nagar. Website
Jaipur Pavilion, ITC Rajputana, Gopalbari The red brick-clad walls, courtyards, and arched arcades hark back to a traditional Rajputi haveli at the ITC Rajputana, weaving culture in a modern luxury setup. The all-day dining restaurant Jaipur Pavilion offers the quintessential Rajasthani thali on a huge silver platter that’s served under glittering Moroccan lamps, and chandeliers for the royal in you. Chef Parul Kapoor requests you to begin with chogni ke laddoo. “Most Rajasthani royals were fond of sweets; in a traditional 'jeeman' (feast), sweet dishes are not meant to be only deserts; you start with a sweet and end with another; the thali is designed in such a manner that it comes to a sweet circle,” explains Parul. What's on the menu : Boondi ka ladoo, kachumber salad, raita, paneer papad ki sabzi, dal tadka, ker sangri, baati, choorma, rice and malpua. Palace Road, Gopalbari. Website
The Baradari Mahal, Diggi Palace, C- Scheme
The thali at Diggi
Majestic and peaceful are words one would use to define this 150-year-old garden estate haveli owned by the Thakur's of Diggi. Over the years, the palace has hosted great literary minds for the Jaipur Literature Festival. The kitchen sure knows how to whip up an authentic Rajasthani experience with the Diggi special lal maas and tradition-perfected thali for guests. On a winter afternoon, the restaurant can be set up for an experience amid frescos, courts and the porches (durbars and deodis) for you to enjoy a grand thali while admiring the lush green 18 acres of gardens flanked by mahogany trees. What's on the menu : masala baati, saadi baati, besan choorma, aata choorma, daal, ker sangri, lal maas, lehsun ki chutmey, kadhi, gatte ki sabzi, salad, rice and gulaab jamun. The experience needs to be booked a day in advance and ican be shared with one family of four people. Diggi House, Shivaji Marg, Sawai Ram Singh Road. Website
Suvarna Mahal, Rambagh Palace, Bhawani Singh Road
Suvarna Mahal, Rambagh Palace
If you have ever hankered to dine in what was once a Maharaja's private dining room, head to the Suvarna Mahal, the regal banquet inside the Rambagh Palace, previously the home of the late Maharaja Sawai Man Singh II and his queen, Maharani Gayatri Devi. This is by far the most opulent dining room in the city: the high ceiling is emblazoned with mirrors, Russian and Venetian frescos and Italian chandeliers that lend the room a golden glow. The walls are clad with ivory and mounted with flags and trophies from the royal era. The drapes are made of the finest silk, and the hefty cutlery is polished with gold. Embark on a food journey that takes you across the royal kitchens of Rajasthan, Awadh, Punjab and Hyderabad. You can take your pick of the region or mix and match as per your craving. What's on the menu : Chakki ka saag, kakori kebab and dal Suvarna Bhawani Singh Road, Rambagh. Website
Sheesh Mahal, Samode Palace, Chomu
Samode Palace
Translating to 'The Palace of Mirrors', the Sheesh Mahal was once part of the Zenana (ladies) complex of the 16th-century palace and continues to channel the immense elegance, style and sophistication of the Samode feminine nobility. Decor palates of the opulent yesteryear, fresco art, as well as rubies and emeralds still adorn the walls of this complex. These thoughtfully restored rooms keep up with the glamorous ambience. The carefully crafted dinner experience offers guests a selection of the finest wines from 10 countries, followed by a plated dinner that features favourites of the Samode family.
