Pitbull

Previous Latin pop combinations of Enrique Iglesias, Pitbull and Ricky Martin have proven immensely popular, but put them all together, and “The Trilogy” Tour is truly unbeatable.

In a packed start to a United Center stand, continuing on Thursday, November 2, the peers and pals, backed by live bands, each turned in a super tight hour of Spanish singles and crossover chart-toppers, though no matter the language, it was always a party.

The alternating slots started with Ricky Martin and his line of dancers, who after an explosive opening of “Pégate,” “María” and “Adrenalina,” also featuring Wisin and Jennifer Lopez on record, had everyone “Shake Your Bon Bon.”

Pitbull

The pace really reached a pinnacle thanks to “Livin’ La Vida Loca,” which could’ve easily been the conclusion had it not been for the rousing call and response prompted by a euphoric drink from “The Cup Of Life.”

Up next, Iglesias made sure to let the United Center know “Tonight (I’m Lovin’ You)” and kept the sentiment going with “Be With You,” eventually dancing his way around “Bailamos” and serenading fans up close on a secondary stage.

His own “Escape” and the Eurythmics’ “Sweet Dreams (Are Made Of This)” made the arena feel like a sweaty club, as did the Pitbull studio collaboration “I Like It,” though sadly and strangely, they didn’t recreate the moment together.

Even so, Enrique came up a “Hero,” particularly during “El Perdón,” normally with Nicky Jam, and “Bailando,” all proving he could singlehandedly command a crowd like few others.

Last but certainly not least, Pitbull and his flashy entourage brought basically nothing but bangers, starting ever so appropriately with “Don’t Stop The Party” and delivering other standouts, such as “Hey Baby (Drop It To The Floor)” and “Hotel Room Service.”

Pitbull

However, Mr. Worldwide especially captivated after yelling “Timber,” making sure everyone had the “Time Of Our Lives,” while seizing every moment just like those who appeared earlier in the endlessly entertaining evening.

The Meaning Behind “Livin’ La Vida Loca” by Ricky Martin

by Bryan Reesman January 30, 2024, 3:26 pm

When the Latin pop music explosion took hold in America starting in 1999, former Menudo singer Ricky Martin was at the forefront of the movement. He had released four Spanish language albums prior and had sold out stadiums throughout Mexico and South America. His Grammy Awards performance of “La Copa De La Vida” (“The Cup Of Life”) in February 1999 was this country’s introduction to a man who would soon crossover into the English language market and become a superstar in his own right.

Videos by American Songwriter

Finding the right hit.

Sony Music executives already knew they had a star on their hands, and this was a well-planned Grammy introduction to Martin as the debut single from his first English language album was arriving a month later in March 1999. Draco “Robi” Rosa (who had worked with Ricky Martin before and sung with Menudo) and Desmond Child (hit writer for Bon Jovi and KISS) were brought in to craft “Livin’ La Vida Loca” which featured big brass sounds and a twangy guitar melody. The duo wanted to come up with “The Millennium Party Song from Hell,” and they helped create an international sensation that kicked off the 2000s Latin pop craze. (They co-wrote other songs for the album as well.)

“The mandate was, you know, I had [to write] pop with some authenticity,”  Rosa told NPR in 2021 . “Push to be honest, push to be as real as possible. But make sure it’s pop. That it’s, you know, commercially — that there’s a potential. … I was channeling [Jim] Morrison. I mean, there’s elements of big band [and] a little bit of surf guitar.”

In 2012, Child, who is half-Cuban, told Songfacts , “His [Martin’s] manager, Angelo Medina, thought there was a market in radio stations that were doing songs that were going back and forth between English and Spanish. He said, ‘Well, what if you do one song that’s kind of both?’ If you look at ‘Livin’ La Vida Loca,’ there really is very little Spanish in it. But when we presented it to the record company, one of the top executives came back to me and said, ‘Could you write that song in English now?’ I said, ‘It is in English.’ And in fact, when the first ads came out, he insisted that underneath ‘Livin’ La Vida Loca,’ in parentheses, it said, ‘Livin’ the Crazy Life.’ We were scratching our heads, like, Come on now, anyone who has ever gone to Pollo Loco knows what the word ‘loco’ is.

“That particular song had parts that sound like Spanish but aren’t. Like, ‘skin the color of mocha.’ ‘Mocha’ is an American term – we don’t say that in Spanish. But it sounded like Spanish. It took three days to work out the right combination of sounds and words. That’s pretty much the longest I had ever worked on a song before. That was before I started working in theater. These days it takes me three or four days to write a proper song.”

Devilish Desire

“Livin’ La Vida Loca” (which translates as “Livin’ the Crazy Life”) is about a desirable woman who makes one’s nights memorable but also brings trouble.

“She’s into superstitions

 Black cats and voodoo dolls

 I feel a premonition

That girl’s gonna make me fall

She’s into new sensations

 New kicks in the candlelight

 She’s got a new addiction

 For every day and night

She’ll make you take your clothes off and go dancing in the rain

She’ll make you live her crazy life, but she’ll take away your pain

Like a bullet to your brain

 Come on!”

But there is a darker side to the tale when Martin sings: “Woke up in New York City in a funky cheap hotel/She took my heart, and she took my money/She must’ve slipped me a sleeping pill.”

The song is a fun, boisterous, cautionary tale. Be careful what you wish for…

A Global Smash and Lasting Impact

“Livin’ La Vida Loca” broke big across all borders. It went No. 1 in America, Canada, the UK, Mexico, and 13 other countries, and it went Top 10 in over 15 more. Global sales of the single surpassed 4 million units. Ricky Martin’s self-titled, English language debut, which also featured two songs written by Diane Warren, would spawn two more hits and go on to sell 7 million copies by January 2000. Martin had arrived in a big way.

In the wake of Martin’s success, other artists like Shakira, Enrique Iglesias, Marc Antony, and Jennifer Lopez also joined the chart-topping party. It was something new and refreshing, and it was a boost to Latin pop music worldwide. Since the 1980s the two big Latin crossovers had been Gloria Estefan and the Miami Sound Machine as well as Selena, but now the market had expanded considerably. There are those who would contend that the Latin pop trend then was nothing more than a marketing gimmick, but it did expose mainstream listeners to artists they might not have paid attention to before.

Today, “Livin’ La Vida Loca” has racked up a half billion views on YouTube and nearly 400 million plays on Spotify. The video features a ballroom full of sexy Latin dancers and an exuberant, hip-swiveling performance from Martin. It’s easy to see why his star rose so quickly.

In speaking to Digital Spy in 2011 , Martin looked back on the success of “Livin’ La Vida Loca”.

“Musically speaking it’s rich,” he said. “It has a fantastic fusion of cultures from rock to ska to Latin, with the horns. During my sabbatical I spent two years not listening to my songs at all. Then one day I walked into my studio and I just pressed play and ‘Livin la Vida Loca’ came on and I was like, ‘What the f**k is up with this track?’ I don’t want to sound arrogant, but I thought, ‘This is perfect.’ The multicultural influence, the harmonies, the story – it’s a really fun track. The timing of it all was really good too – Latin sounds at the turn of the year 2000 were of the moment. The cosmos was manifesting in a very powerful way for that track to be a success.”

For the last two weeks, Ricky Martin has been shaking his bon bon up and down North America on his exuberant Trilogy Tour.

The 19-date arena trek launched on October 14th in Washington, D.C.–with fellow co-headliners Enrique Iglesias and Pitbull–and features stops in major cities like New York, Chicago, Los Angeles, Miami, and Houston, before winding down on December 10th in Vancouver.

The newly single 51-year-old has been performing around 12 to 15 songs, so fans are getting to hear a slew of his bops like “Maria,” “She Bangs”, “Shake Your Bon-Bon”, “The Cup of Life”, and, of course, his 1999 blockbuster “Livin’ La Vida Loca,” among others.

USA Today was especially enthralled with the fancy footwork during the Puerto Rican hunk’s bombastic set.

His hips were on auto-swivel during a feverish, horn-infused “Shake Your Bon-Bon” featuring Martin brandishing his tattooed biceps, while the still goofily fun “She Bangs” found him encircled by his dancers as he romped through the song, full of sex and swagger.

Speaking of his dancers, Martin’s backup crew have been bringing the heat as they flaunt their goods alongside the night’s main character.

Ricky Martin on coming out as gay: 'I've been super happy ever since'

Ricky Martin presents the Album of The Year Award onstage during the 20th annual Latin Grammy Awards in Las Vegas on Nov. 14, 2019 in Las Vegas, Nevada.

Ricky Martin is opening up about his decision to come out as gay.

The music superstar recalls being on his Livin’ La Vida Loca tour in 1999 when he decided he had to take some time off.

“My music was being heard all over the world, regardless of the language,” Martin said during an appearance on Proud Radio on Apple Music. “I could high five God, but I wasn’t living to the fullest. I was sad. I was depressed. I would walk on stage to perform because that was the only way I could balance my emotion is to snap out of this heavy sadness that I was moving in. And then actually there came a moment that I said, ‘We need to stop. We need to stop the tour.’ I remember I was in Australia and from Australia, we were going to go to South America. And I said, I can’t. I can’t do this. I need to go home. I need silence. I need to cry. I need to be angry. I need to forgive myself for allowing myself to reach this level, to get to where I’m at. And I took some time and I took a sabbatical.”

While everyone in his life knew about his sexuality, Martin didn’t go public with his private life until he published his 2011 memoir, “Me: Ricky Martin.”

“I got to the place I was fighting as I was writing my book between saying, ‘Am I gay? Am I bisexual? Am I gay? Am I bisexual?,’” he said. “And either is okay, just go within and do not lie to yourself. And then I said, ‘Rick, you are a very fortunate homosexual man. You are gay.’ And I wrote it and I pressed send, and then I cried like crazy. And I’ve been super happy ever since.”

Martin also talked about his love of Elton John. “I just remember growing up and looking at Elton and saying like, ‘I love his music. I like his colors. I love his wigs. I love it. Do I want to be him or do I like him? I’m so confused,’” he said. “At the end of the day, I remember just warm, loving, comforting … just emotions every time I saw him. Let’s give him a lot of credit for that.”

The Grammy winner also weighed in on the intersection of the LGBTQ community and Black Lives Matter. “I think we have to join forces,” Martin said. “At this point it’s all about listening. It’s about learning, it’s about being respectful, and it’s about understanding that at this point it’s not about us. At this point it’s about giving the platform to those incredible voices that has helped us and has taught us about the injustices that, in this case the LGBTQ+ community goes through.”

Ricky Martin

At the height of his success, Ricky Martin proclaimed to the world that he was “Livin’ La Vida Loca.” But in a new interview, Martin is revealing that life at that time was actually much more painful than his popular song let on.

On the latest episode of Apple Music’s Proud Radio, Martin explained to host Hattie Collins what life was really like living in the closet in the late ’90s. “The world was giving me back the hours that I had put into music, the hours that I had put into this career,” he said. “I was the king of the world. My music was being heard all over the world, regardless of the language. I could high five God, but I wasn’t living to the fullest. I was sad. I was depressed.”

The 48-year-old singer explained that he would perform as a means of survival, as a way to “snap out of this heavy sadness” he felt from being trapped in the closet. At one point, during a subsequent world tour, Martin says he couldn’t even bring himself to perform. “I was in Australia and from Australia, we were going to go to South America,” he recalls. “And I said, I can’t. I can’t do this. I need to go home. I need silence. I need to cry. I need to be angry. I need to forgive myself for allowing myself to reach this level, to get to where I’m at.”

After taking time off to learn about himself and his sexuality, Martin still wasn’t ready to publicly come out — his friends and family knew, but his fans still didn’t. It wasn’t until he began working on his memoir that he finally summoned the courage to publicly come out to this fans. “I wrote it and I pressed send, and then I cried like crazy. And I’ve been super happy ever since,” he says.

But the star explains that it’s not only important to have more out, LGBTQ stars for people to look up to — Martin also said it’s important for straight stars to be supportive, vocal allies for the community. To offer an example, he said to look no further than Bad Bunny.

“Bad Bunny is doing an outstanding job,” Martin said. “We will forever be grateful, because we need them. They are an important part of our history, allies are, and I appreciate it. That’s why I needed to work with him.”

Ricky Martin Recalls His Dad Encouraging Him to Publicly Come Out as Gay: 'You Gotta Be Open'

The Puerto Rican superstar recalled immediately starting to "cry like a baby" upon sharing his gay identity with the masses

Ricky Martin may not have publicly revealed his gay identity in March 2010 if it weren't for his father.

In a new interview on SiriusXM’s Andy Cohen Live , the Puerto Rican superstar revealed his father, Enrique, encouraged him to take a leap of faith and come out as gay to his fans in order to live his truth.

Thinking back on his life and career before coming out, Ricky, 52, said his professional team encouraged him to continue concealing his sexuality. "'This is gonna be the end of your career,'" he recalled being told. "'You don't have to tell the world. Your friends know, your family know. Why do you need to stand in front of the camera and talk about it?'"

While his team "didn't understand the importance" of coming out, the "Livin' La Vida Loca" singer's father did — especially after Ricky welcomed his twin sons, Matteo and Valentino, in 2008.

"He said, 'What are you gonna [do], teach your kids to lie? You gotta be open. You gotta go out... I want to help you. How can we do this?'" said the Grammy winner. "And I'm like, 'All right, Dad, I'm working on it. Gimme a second. I don't know how. I don't know if it's through an interview. I don't know if I want to write a letter and tweet it. I don't know. Gimme a break. It'll come.'"

Ricky came out to his mom at age 18, though she needed some time to understand the matter. "She was concerned because she was, 'Oh my God, I just don't want you to hurt and people out there are really cruel,' and so it took her a minute to accept it," he said.

"But obviously when I did it, I made sure she was on an airplane on her way to see me. So, she was on her airplane, and I did what I did," explained the former Menudo member. "I wrote a letter, and I tweeted it."

Ultimately, coming out was rewarding for Ricky. "I wish I could come out 20 times. It felt amazing. Of course, I started crying like a baby. You know, I pressed send and I was like, 'Oh, that's it?'" he said. "My assistant who's still my assistant, Paco, he was next to me and I'm like, 'I think I need a hug.'"
