Day 1 : Hanoi

Our guide meets you at your hotel at 13:00hrs for a bike fit.

Post that, walk the busy streets of Hanoi visiting some of the cultural and historical highlights of Hanoi. Visit the Ho Chi Minh Mausoleum, One Pillar Pagoda, which was constructed nearly a millennium ago, and is delicately elevated in a pond. Also visit the Temple of Literature, dating back close to a thousand years, is a wonderfully preserved piece of ancient Vietnamese architecture and stands to honor the scholarly achievements of the country’s academics and philosophers. Continue exploring the area around Hoan Kiem (Sword) Lake, the old quarter including Ngoc Son Temple, which sits perched on a little island in the lake. In the evening, we convene over dinner.

Day 2 : Halong City

Day 3 : Halong Bay - Cat Ba Island

A quick ferry journey amidst spectacular limestone mountain scenery brings us to Cat Ba Island. After lunch, get on the bike for a loop around the island. Enjoy the stunning sunset over the limestone mountains.

Cat ba island Loop.PNG

Day 4 : Kayak and Shuttle to Ninh Binh

After a hearty breakfast, get on board a smaller boat and take a journey to the more remote and secluded parts of the Lan Ha Bay waters and islands. Trade your boat with a kayak and explore the lagoons, the coral reef, beaches, and limestone peaks. Ferry back to Hai Phong and journey towards Ninh Binh.

The distance from Halong to Ninh Binh is approximately 170km. We spend around 3 hours in transit, and if time permits, unload the bikes for a cycling journey on backroads, along the dike, covering approximately 20-25km to reach the hotel. Anticipated arrival time at the hotel is between 16:00 and 17:00.

Itinerary Image

Day 5 : Cuc Phuong National Park

A short cycling ride along the river brings us to Trang An, known as Halong Bay on land. The landscape is largely dominated by limestone mountains, rivers, caves, and pagodas. Here we take a boat ride and get to experience the magical scenery dotted with natural and cultural wonders.

We take a break at the ancient city of Hoa Lu for a quick temple tour and then continue riding toward Cuc Phuong National Park through the stunning landscape.

Nin Binh-Cuc Phuong National Park.PNG

Day 6 : Pu Luong

In the early morning hours, visit the Cuc Phuong National Park, an important site for biodiversity in Vietnam

It’s a long day interspersed with transfers and rides. We start with a transfer of about 90min to the starting point for our cycling. Unload the bikes and cycle on largely undulating paths. We continue cycling past acacia plantations, sugarcane fields, and corn farms dotted with Thai and Muong Tribes' villages. Arrive in Pu Luong, and check in at a family lodge located in the heart of Pu Luong Nature Reserve.

Day 7 : Pu Luong

Pu Luong is a beautiful region located in northern Vietnam and known for its stunning natural landscapes, lush green rice terraces, ethnic minority villages, and pristine forests. The area is characterized by its tranquil and picturesque scenery and offers a variety of trekking and hiking opportunities. There are numerous trails through the terraced rice fields, across suspension bridges, and into the heart of the forested hills.

Today we go hiking in Pu Luong, promising an immersive journey through the picturesque terrains of Don Village, Hieu Village, and culminating at the breathtaking Hieu Waterfall.

For those seeking a leisurely day, feel free to opt for a rest day and enjoy the tranquil surroundings. Whether hiking or relaxing, Pu Luong invites you to savor the richness of its landscapes and culture at your own pace.

Hiking : 10-15km

Itinerary Image

Day 8 : Mai Chau

Another day of the undulating ride. Cycle past a spectacular mountain range with karst cliffs, terraced rice fields, and a typical agricultural landscape, ending at the beautiful valleys of Mai Chau. The experience is truly unique as we get to experience a good change in landscape.

Mai Chau is a collection of villages and offers a true rural cycling experience. Do enjoy the evening walking around the valley and admiring simple rural life amidst spectacular scenery.

Itinerary Image

Day 9 : Fly to Hue

Today enjoy a thrilling loop around the gorgeous valley and experience Mai Chau village life at close quarters. It’s an off-beat trail and some sections are over a gravel road. We pass by many bucolic villages where children come to greet us and through tumbling steams. The region is mainly inhabited by White Thai people.

In the evening, take a short flight to Hue. Our guide meets at the airport and then transfer you to your hotel. Hue is a city located in central Vietnam, known for its rich history, cultural heritage, and scenic beauty. The Perfume River flows through Hue, adding to the city's charm. Taking a boat trip on the river is a popular activity. Hue is also known for its traditional arts and crafts, including delicate porcelain, intricate embroidery, and distinctive Hue-style cuisine, which is renowned for its sophisticated flavors and presentation.

Itinerary Image

Day 10 : Hué

Today take your bicycle out for an early morning leisurely loop around the imperial town of Hué. Ride past the Citadel, Thien Mu Pagoda, Mausoleums, and the merchant’s houses along the banks of the Perfume River and through quiet lanes with lush gardens.

If you're up for more riding, explore the ‘purple city’ on a short countryside loop on a bike, swerving to unthreaded nooks and corners through the beautiful rural countryside and absorbing this historic capital city of Vietnam at your own pace. Take a short transfer out of Hue to visit the Thanh Toan Bridge, an ancient architectural monument extremely valuable in terms of its history and culture. This is one of two bridges remaining in Vietnam today that retains its unique architectural style. We then cycle on to Dam Chuon Lagoon, a part of the Tam Giang Lagoon system. This is a must-see spot for all those who are lovers of beautiful scenery and keen photographers.

We continue riding to Thuan An beach, an ideal place for relaxation. On the way to the beach, there will be many houses, temples, pagodas, rice fields, and beautiful gardens to see and explore. Upon arrival at the beach, enjoy a swim and then jump back on the bikes and head to Con Te Islet.

Loopback to Hue, and stop at Sinh Village – an ancient village well known for its artists and beautiful, traditional, craft woodblock paintings.

Hue Loop.PNG

Day 11 : Hoi An

After a hearty breakfast, we take a short transfer out of Hue to the coast. Begin riding off the beaten track along a picturesque, narrow peninsular road. Cross the estuary of the Perfume River and from here, challenge yourself by cycling up the Phuoc Tuong Pass then take a short transfer to Lang Co and have lunch by the gorgeous lagoon.

Later, ride along the Lang Co Bay with spectacular views of winding paths, wooden fishing boats, waterfalls, mountains, and forests, and bike over gradual hills to climb Hai Van pass for views of this splendid bay. This rugged pass is the final section of the Truong Son Range stretching to the sea. From the pass, go downhill to the base and shuttle to Hoi An, a delightful old trading town and UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Hue-Hoian(Part1).PNG

Day 12 : Hoi An

The architectural beauty of Hoi An will captivate you as this UNESCO World Heritage Site offers a melange of Vietnamese, European, Chinese, and Japanese monuments in an unhurried, timeless setting.

Today you can plan your own day, and enjoy the enchanting Hoi An town at leisure. A paradise for shoppers, a walk through the town gives a feel of an open-air museum.

Itinerary Image

Day 13 : Fly to Saigon

Get up early today for a short flight to Saigon. Our guide meets you at the airport and transfers you to your hotel. Later, go on a walking tour to explore some of the most popular sites (Ben Thanh Market, Saigon Opera House, Continental Hotel, The Reunification Palace, Notre Dame Cathedral and Post Office, and The War Remnants Museum). This walking tour gives an excellent introduction to the city’s history and provides you with plenty of opportunities to soak up the unique mix of chaos and tranquility that is modern-day Saigon.

Itinerary Image

Day 14 : Tra Vinh

A short shuttle transfer brings us to the outskirts of My Tho — the gateway to the Mekong delta. We ride along a small creek to Mekong estuary past gorgeous paddy fields and lush orchards. Along the way, we cross a river on a local ferry. After 20 kms (12.5 mi) of biking, we stop for lunch at a local restaurant.

Post-lunch, we ride in the van for 30 minutes before beginning our afternoon cycling. We ride past coconut plantations on a smooth surface, and under a green canopy of trees growing on either side of the road. En route, we stop at a local family to see how they use coconut fiber to make ropes and use coconut leaves to make thatched huts. After another 30 kms (18.6 mi) miles of cycling, we load our bikes in the van and drive for 40 minutes to our hotel, the Coco Riverside Lodge.

Before dinner, our hotel organizes a fun cooking class where they teach how to make rice pancakes.

Saigon-Tra vinhh.PNG

Day 15 : Can Tho

We begin the day with a 40 minute shuttle transfer to head deeper into the delta. We then visit a beautiful Khmer Pagoda before beginning the day's biking. We ride past numerous rice fields, rivers, and canals, and over a multitude of bridges that may offer views of floating villages. Apart from rice fields, the region is dotted with many plantations of banana, coconut, and citrus trees.

We stop for coffee after biking for 25 kms (15.5 mi), and then bike another 21 kms (13 mi) before stopping for lunch at a local restaurant.

It’s a long ride today through the interior trails of Mekong Delta to Can Tho. Post lunch, we ride another 20 kms (12.4 mi) on these trails and even cross a river on a local ferry before loading our bike in the van and driving for 90 minutes to Can Tho.

Tra Vinh-Can Tho.PNG

Day 16 : Cai Be

We start this day at 7:30am and hop on to a boat to experience the early morning Cai Rang floating market. Each boat in this market showcases its distinct specialty, which can be identified by the items hanging on tall poles. While many boats anchor in place, a few gracefully float around, particularly those dedicated to snacks or coffee, catering to the shop owners' needs. The majority of the boats appear weathered, constructed from aged wood and exude a rustic charm.

This bustling market primarily focuses on the sale of fresh produce and food items, ranging from sweet potatoes and watermelons to lychee. Unlike clothing or household goods, the market solely revolves around agricultural products. Exploring this lively marketplace provides a fascinating glimpse into the authentic daily life of the locals. After the boat ride, we disembark onto a pathway made of old railroad ties and proceed to walk along a busy road lined with numerous meat markets, eventually making our way back to the van.

Later ride into the heartland of the Mekong Delta, past the pristine hamlets nestled in the orchards and coconut plantations. Along the way, see farmers working in nursery fruit tree gardens.

We stay tonight at the Ba Linh homestay, which was one of the first homestays started in this region to welcome tourists. They cook their meals in the traditional Vietnamese fashion using firewood which adds a more authentic flavor to the food. The homestay, however, does not have AC, and the beds come with mosquito nets to make sleeping comfortable.

Itinerary Image

Day 17 : Saigon

Take an early morning boat trip to the bustling floating market, and visit handicraft villages and the Cai Be market on land. After the boat trip, cycle to Cai Lay and along the way discover the gardens of Longan (Dragon eyes). We continue cycling to My Tho and visit the ornamental Khmer pagoda of Vinh Trang. Later shuttle to your hotel in Saigon or the airport.

Like most tropical regions, Vietnam has hot summers, mild pleasant winters, and an extremely wet rainy season. Being located in the northern hemisphere, the best season for cycling in Vietnam is generally from September to May, with regional variations as described below:

North Vietnam – Hanoi and Halong Bay: The cycling tour season in this region runs from October to May. December and January can be cold with occasional rainfall. May to October is hot, with heavy rain in the months of August and September.

Coastal Vietnam – Hue to Nha Trang: Coastal Vietnam is a narrow crescent-like coastal strip that is at times only 60 km wide. As a result, it experiences coastal weather phenomena such as high rainfall and occasional typhoons during the wet season that runs from September to December. Travelers during this season should be prepared for last-minute changes to the itinerary. The Best season to visit this region is from January to September with the average temperature hovering around 30°C.

South Vietnam – Saigon and Mekong Delta: South Vietnam is a year-round cycling destination because of its pleasant tropical climate. April and May can be hot, but for the rest of the year, the temperature hovers around 30°C. There is moderate rainfall from May to early November but it settles soon, leaving the weather cool and the countryside lush. November to February is the best time for cycling in South Vietnam with warm weather, clear blue skies, and a light ocean breeze blowing in from the Pacific.

Residents from a number of countries have visa exemption status for tourist visits to Vietnam. For a full list of up-to-date visa-exempt countries, see the Vietnam Foreign Affairs website .

Starting August 15, 2023, the Vietnam government will start offering an e-visa valid for up to 90 days with multiple entries, replacing the current 30-day, single-entry option. Furthermore, passport holders from Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, South Korea, Russia, Spain, Sweden, and the United Kingdom will benefit from an extended visa exemption period of 45 days, up from the current 15 days. Eligible foreign nationals will either benefit from a longer duration of stay and greater flexibility with the extended e-visa validity of up to 90 days and multiple entries, or enjoy an extended visa exemption period of 45 days.

e-Visa – You can apply for an e-visa through the government website, then, once approved, simply print it out and present it upon arrival in Vietnam. The additional benefit of the e-visa is that it's valid at land borders, not just airports. The processing time ranges from 2 to 7 working days. We recommend applying 2 weeks in advance to avoid unexpected delays. Read more about tourist e-visas for Vietnam at the Vietnam Immigration portal and apply there.

While applying online for an approval letter, please ensure that you have the following documents:

  • Passport scanned copy: A scanned copy of your passport - front (main) page. It shouldn't be a mobile photo or a photo taken from a laptop. Strictly scanned copy done through a computer scanner.
  • Passport size photo: portrait photo (4*6 size, colored photo, white background, straight looking without glasses). A photo taken from a mobile or laptop may or may not work, so I would strictly advise getting one made through a nearby photo studio (retail shop) that specializes in taking photos for visas.

Here is an excellent resource on Vietnam visas that may be worth looking at.

Reviews from our friends

Richard r from us.

I feel that we got a realistic view

I feel that we got a realistic view of Vietnamese citizens which is what we wanted. The bicycles were a great way to see things and engage with people. It was good to have the experience of traveling the length of the country and we are glad we got to Siem Reap as well. All transfers went smoothly and the itinerary was well planned. The guides were helpful in picking our food options and we ate some excellent food. Cycling in Vietnam was not like our other cycling trips in other countries as far as road quality. That was mentioned in the trip literature and should be taken to heart. We rode on some very rough, pitted roads, through gravel, through sand, standing water, and heavy mud. It was a good trip and we are glad we did it.

Trip of a Lifetime!

Doing this trip to Vietnam on by bike, we saw so much more than we otherwise would have. We went to out of the way places and really got to experience how people live. The guides were also knowledgable and accomodating. The excursions were fun and interesting. I learned so much about the country and its history. I would do a trip like this again for sure.

Corrine Livingston from US

We loved the trip!

We loved the trip! The cycling was fun and beautiful, the guides were very gracious and informative, of course the food was fabulous and our hotels were very nice. Vietnam is a very special place in our hearts as the people are so warm and friendly.

What Client Say

As a family of four we did a 4 day , 3 night cycling tour around the Mekong Delta from Ho Chi Minh to Chau Doc . It was the highlight of our trip so far largely thanks to our amazing guide Ut and lovely driver Kit, we saw so much that we wouldn’t have been able to any other way, and seeing the people getting ready for Tet was fantastic, although they all took time to shout hello and high five you along the way. The accomodation at the homestay in particular was excellent as was the food, and I have never slept so well. Thank you so much for such a wonderful experience.

We booked SinhBalo Adventure Travel from home having read the reviews on TA and our party of 4 adults opted for the 2 nights and 3 days cycling and boating around the Mekong Delta. From start to finish the whole trip was very well organised, professional and did exactly what it said on the tin. We were very pleased with the whole experience and trip.

We did the Can Tho / hotel stay bike and boat tour with SinBalo, which was a highlight of our Vietnam Trip. Ut was a fantastic guide, a Mekong Delta local giving us a lot of information and answering our many questions. He and the van driver were good-natured, friendly, professional, and responsible.

We did a 3 day orivate cycking tour with asinhbalo in the Meking Delta. Everything was great: the bikes were very good and well looked after, the driver in the support car was quite good, an waitedmfor us with cold water and nice wet towels at the end of each cycling segment. The guide looked after us in the bits of rozds which were busy without being over-protective.

river landscape in Northern Vietnam

North Vietnam: A picture-perfect region

North Vietnam is an adventurer’s paradise: Explore the magnificent mountainous inland, the lively capital of Vietnam, Hanoi, and the spectacular Ha Long Bay rocks.

Ha Long Bay, with its 2,000 islands and striking limestone formations, is one of the most spectacular sights in Vietnam. The sinking limestone plateau, with its rich vegetation and biodiversity, was declared a UNESCO World Natural Heritage Site in 1994. The name of the bay means “The Descending Dragon”. According to legend, the bay was created when a dragon carved deep furrows in the land with its tail, which was then filled with seawater.

The best way to admire this mythological landscape is on board a traditional junk. On our Islandhopping tour, you will also have the opportunity to take a guided kayak tour to explore lagoons, beaches, and caves hidden amongst these limestone giants. The area northeast of Ha Long Bay belongs to Bai Tu Long National Park, which has a bay of the same name, just as beautiful as its famous neighbour.

One of the best places to visit in Vietnam is the vibrant capital of Hanoi with its labyrinthine style alleys and colourful houses. This city is a mix of old and new, the traditional and the modern. A walk through the night market is one of the top 10 things to do in the city. Its beautiful colours, scents, and tastes make a holiday in Vietnam a feast for the senses!

Central Vietnam: Rich in culture and history

Central Vietnam is one of the most exciting regions on our tour through the country. The region is considered the cultural centre of Vietnam, not in the least because of the old imperial city of Hue, easily one of the top 10 places to visit in Vietnam. The former capital was the main residence of the emperors between 1802 and 1945. The citadel with its forbidden city still bears witness to the splendour of the time. There were more than 10,000 people living within the high walls of the palace who cared for the well-being of the imperial family. Next to the palace are the historically significant Imperial Tombs and the world-famous Thien Mu Pagoda (the Pagoda of the Celestial Lady), which was built seven storeys high. The cuisine in Hue is also considered one of the best in the country.

120 kilometers further south you can find the picturesque town Hoi An. The city impresses with its striking French and Chinese architecture and has a wealth of tailor shops where every traveller is sure to find something. Cyclists visiting the city also have a special treat to look forward to: The riverside path along the Thu Bon River is considered one of the most beautiful cycling tours in the country and a must do for any biker visiting the area.

Mekong Delta: The rice bowl of Vietnam

The Mekong Delta is often called the lifeline of Vietnam. In this region with its tropical climate, numerous canals wind through the mangrove swamps and rice fields. This precious water influences every aspect of life here: Houses on stilts, rice mills, people washing laundry, heavily loaded boats, waving children, and snorting water buffaloes line the banks. Watching this go by onboard a boat is a special experience and arguably one of the best things to do in Vietnam. At walking pace, we will pass by lavish nature, presenting itself in a rush of colour and fragrant fruit.

This is then contrasted with the bustling areas along the river such as the floating market of Cai Rang or the lively metropolis Can Tho, the so-called little Venice of Vietnam. For cyclists, the many islands in the middle of the delta offer ideal conditions for varied cycling tours: Shady paths, little traffic, and numerous bridges make these bike routes a relaxing pleasure.

Ho Chi Minh City, north of the Mekong Delta, should not be missed on a tour through Vietnam. As Vietnam’s largest city, there are plenty of things to do here, with numerous historical and cultural attractions on offer.

Since our groups never have more than 10 travelers, we stay in small, authentic accommodations that can’t take large tour groups. MTB Vietnam offers basic amenities and simple comforts with an emphasis on the character of your destination because it depends on the place you are staying in each destination, home-stay or small hotels. But actually, the hotels in our programs are 2-3 star ones with standard and deluxe rooms with wifi and warm shower. If you choose a basic tour, you will share in a twin-room.

The cost you pay for your trip includes everything related to your tour which we mention in each specific tour on our MTBVietnam.Com webpage!

We have designed a range of tours to suit every kind of cyclist from off road mountain biking in Vietnam and cycling in Laos. All level can join our cycling trips!

Vietnam is a long country with several distinct climatic zones. The best time to take our bike tour is December – March, which is the Vietnamese winter. November is also a good time although you might strike the end of the monsoon season and have one or two wet days.

In the Far North of Vietnam, March – May or October – December are the best times to visit (January and February, which are the height of winter, can be too cold).

The winds from January on will mostly come from the north, so it is best to bike from the north to the south. The wind is not so strong in November/December.

We strongly recommend you take out travel, accident, medical, baggage and cancellation insurance. Medical Evacuation insurance is compulsory in Vietnam and India.

For New Zealand, you can purchase travel insurance from Southern Cross Travel Insurance.

For Australia, you can compare travel insurance policies.

For Vietnam, check your medical policy to see if Medivac type air transport is included in your policy (or Aflac type supplemental policy) first. If not you can buy medical insurance only at Access America or CSA Travel Protection.

A full cancellation policy is the only way to cover yourself for any problem that may happen before the trip.

The geography of Vietnam is endlessly stunning. From the fertile green hills to the picturesque rice growing lowlands and the jagged rocky coastlines that gives way to beaches and fishing villages for thousands of kilometers. It's a place that will stay with you long after you have ridden it.

Vietnamese people are some of the most engaging and sophisticated in the region. A rich history and culture, combined with a modern history that has shaped the current national psyche, has created a society that is likely not what you expected. The pace at which the country and its people are advancing is unparalleled in Southeast Asia. You will get to experience all of this first hand and we won't be at all surprised if it makes you want to return again and again.

434 km / 270 mi riding:  This tour includes some terrific variety in the riding conditions. In the highlands, you are on undulating roads with some sustained climbs to vantage points. Then you descend to the coast and enjoy rolling hills all the way along the craggy headlands and the long, sand dune peninsulas. You will be on road for the vast majority of the time and for the most part, this is well-laid tarmac or concrete. We do seek out some fun little single trails, but these are always in good condition with a firm surface.

See what has become the number 1 escape destination for the hard-working people of Saigon and learn about the many crops and agricultural products produced in the Dalat region.

Day 1: Dalat - Welcome to the Highlands

The tour kicks off with an 8 am pickup from your Ho Chi Minh City Hotel. You should have your riding gear ready and easily accessible, but you need not wear it on the short flight up to Dalat. On arrival in Dalat, we will prepare for the ride, enjoy morning tea, and have a briefing on the tour ahead. Then we will ride into the city via a back route that takes us over a few hills with great views and some fun downhill sections.

Along our route today we will see coffee plantations and flower gardens as well as a number of small vegetable farms. The people in this area are generally referred to as highland people or hill tribes. There are three main ethnic minorities that make up the "hill tribes" and those in this area are typically the Lach tribes. Historically, hill tribes had been allowed a high degree of autonomy for various cultural reasons, but these days the youth are quite heavily integrated into the general lowland society, so many are in the cities. Often on these back roads, we can still see people wearing little bits and pieces of traditional dress and using some traditional farming practices.

We arrive at the hotel in the mid-afternoon and what a nice place it is to see out the day. With lovely views over the hills and a welcoming pool to cool off in, the hotel is a converted colonial-era property from the days when the French would retire to the hills to see out the hottest parts of the year.

Day 2: Nha Trang - Mountains to the Beach

After a delicious breakfast, we leave the hotel in the van to get past the traffic of the city, then enjoy a ride through undulating terrain on quiet roads. The occasional passing car or small truck will likely give you a toot and a wave, such is the entertainment value that your presence is likely to provide the locals.

Along the route today we will stop at a Bana House. The Bana people build houses out of wood and thatch with a roof pitch as you have likely never seen. It towers above the actual wood structure, the reasons for which your guide will delight in revealing for you.

The descent from the hills will leave you with an ear to ear grin and as you reach the foot a river comes into view, you have arrived at lunch. From here it is a short 1-hour drive into Nha Trang, a buzzing little coastal city, built around one of the best-known beaches in the country. Our hotel is just a short walking distance to the beach.

Day 3: Quy Nhon Ride

This morning a 3-hour t ransfer to get out of town to  the starting point . th e ride up to Quy Nhon is along a very nice stretch of road with views out over the sea . It is the kind of rolling road that winds around headlands and the momentum from one down is almost enough to ascend the next with minimal pedaling . We will stop about 7km short of the city to spend two nights in a secluded resort on a lovely beach that has quite a swell , it also has a good pool to cool off in.

Day 4: Quy Nhon - Ride to Cham Towers

We start today with a van transfer to put us in an optimal ride start location. This is inland, to the north of the city. We will be riding through a landscape of rice fields and villages on quiet, concreted backroads where most other vehicles are motor scooters and local bicycles.

After a little while on the bikes, we come to the ruins of the Cham Towers. This particular site features a set of twin towers in an unrestored state and rarely with any other visitors. There are actually many ruins remaining along the coastal plain from Nha Trang and well north of here. The Champa Kingdom declined and eventually vanished in the 15th century. The towers are thought to date back to the 11th Century.

After a dive into Vietnam's history we will return to the bikes for some more countryside riding, then the afternoon and evening is free to enjoy at your leisure. Your guide can help with any recommendations.

Day 5: Thu Xa (Quang Ngai) - Coastal Riding

Today we set off for another province, Quang Ngai. To get there, we first ride along the coast into the city on rolling hills as we pass a former Leper Colony and then descend into Quy Nhon. Passing through the city along the harbor where colorful fishing boats are moored, we ride out over a bridge and up a stunning peninsula with massive sand dunes shielding our view of the ocean, but with a large lagoon on our left.

As we come over the first major hill the vista opens up. A beautiful coastline appears and suddenly you really see what all the fuss is about the coast of Vietnam. It's a lovely ride and lasts all the way through to lunch where we pack up and transfer about 2 hours by van to a village called Thu Xa. This village is located on a river inlet just outside the provincial capital. It is a quintessential fishing village where squid boats can be seen moored during the mornings and then heading out to sea in the evening, with their bright lights dotting the horizon. The resort here is a recently opened property, aiming to introduce its guests to the local community in a low impact way while creating jobs for local people.

Day 6: Tam Thanh - Village Riding & Ferries

The day starts out on a sobering note this morning with a visit to the My Lai Memorial. The memorial, dedicated to the villagers who lost their lives in the massacre, is located nearby the resort in a village that became well known around the world and particularly in the US during the Vietnam/US War. In fact, it was said by many to be the most shocking episode in a shocking war.

Moving on, we start our ride from the memorial and pedal first on an inland route on small roads and then out onto the coast again. Here the coastline is flatter and often consists of peninsulas around inlets and lagoons. We move through this landscape with the assistance of small, community ferries where a motorized barge goes back and forth, loaded with motor scooter drivers, often with their scooters piled high with produce going one way or another. These are often the most amusing moments where the locals get a decent look at you all in your colorful riding gear and often there are questions as to what brings you to these parts.

We are staying this evening in another beach resort that has only opened very recently. It sits on a very long beach that is uninterrupted by headlands for almost 50km. Again, the developers were lured by the local government trying to create meaningful employment opportunities for their young, enthusiastic residents.

This is our final overnight location, so we will dine together before we enjoy our last ride the next day.

Day 7: Hoi An & Conclusion - Fishing Villages & Estuaries

It is a fun ride to close with. After starting out on the bikes, we will stop at a local fish market that just sets up on the side of the road each day. There is minimal permanent infrastructure, just lots of buckets and basins full of fish and seafood. It's such a colorful and vibrant scene and the vendors are extra cheeky in the morning, often cracking harmless jokes about the foreign visitors and getting a raucous cackle from their contemporaries. There are usually some snack vendors around the edges, so we can try some of the traditional morning snacks that are found in this area.

The ride from here is through small fishing and farming communities on a sandy landscape with casuarina trees providing the only needle-shaped bits of shade for the residents. The streets are mostly quiet, aside from the odd motor scooter and kids playing on their own bikes. One of the villages participated in a street art project some years ago and we can see the remnants of that event on some of the houses as we ride through.

We conclude our ride at the inlet of the Thu Bon River, the same waterway on which Hoi An is situated. We then take a wooden boat along the estuary, arriving in this picturesque, world heritage listed town in the best way possible. A few steps off the boat and we are sitting in one of the oldest, well known, family-run restaurants in town looking out over what was a trading port many centuries ago.

Our tour concludes with a drop off to your hotel in Hoi An.

The hotels we use are a great, and sometimes unexpected, part of this tour. In the larger cities and established tourist centers we use stylish and supremely comfortable hotels and resorts, while in the smaller and more out of the way areas we stay in the best available accommodation, which is often simple yet always well run, clean and comes with air-conditioning and a private bathroom.

An experienced English speaking, local leader will host you on this trip who is well spoken, very knowledgeable, and charming. For tours of 7+ people, an assistant guide will accompany the group to allow for flexibility and ensure attention to service & detail.

Our leaders are often cited as being the main highlight of the tour. We use local guides who have a passion for their country and are always well informed on topics ranging from history, politics, cuisine and importantly local customs and cultures. Our leaders will take pride in introducing you to every aspect of their country and will help you to connect with the villagers you meet along the way. They will also keep your safety and comfort top priorities at all times.

An air-conditioned backup support vehicle is always available in case you want a break from riding, and to carry your luggage.

The international profile of Vietnamese food has increased over the last two decades with very good reason. A cuisine that has evolved with the culture and landscape of Vietnam provides for an astounding level of variety from south to north. Each town and city has its own subtle twist on iconic dishes and some of their own creations. Our leaders are passionate about their food and look forward to taking you on a culinary adventure in unison with your cycling adventure. Included meals are listed in the day by day itinerary, and drinking water is always included with meals. Any soft or alcoholic drinks are not included and will be at your own expense.

Energy bars and local snacks are provided to keep your energy levels up for the riding, and clean water and electrolyte drinks are always available to keep you well hydrated.

Day 2 - Saigon – Phan Thiet Ride 103km.

First time with spice roads, absolutely loved every second. From the admin staff answering every query, to the organisation of the trip, the guides, food, visiting the local sites and supporting local communities. Outstanding, gutted that it's over and would do it again in a heartbeat. They really couldn't do enough to make sure every need was met. The guides and support staff were phenomenal.

Local team are always kind and available

Such a varied trip, recent history, ancient history, culture, food, fascinating little backroads in Vietnam especially, and excellent, personable and knowledgeable guides. Cambodia was really special and I realised how ignorant I was about South East Asia. The drivers were always on hand with water and snacks and the regular days off riding were also appreciated.

Activity Profile

What's included, what's excluded, trip profile.

This tour is 100% on road, and we designed the route with road bikers in mind. We start cycling on Vietnam's coast with a flat warm-up ride to get used to your bikes, then the riding begins in earnest. We have our toughest day early, with a 2,641-m climb on Day 3. It's downhill after that and then flat once we enter Cambodia.

The total distance is 1,096 km in 10 cycling days on smooth tarmac roads. The trip is fully supported, and your guide’s expert knowledge of the area and terrain means that you always know what is coming up in terms of distance and difficulty. This makes a tremendous difference, as does the constant supply of cold drinks, ice, and fresh fruit.

Suitability: This is a tour for cyclists possessing a moderate to high level of physical fitness. Fitness will be a huge asset on those long days and on the climb to Dalat. The tour is fully supported, and the bus is always close at hand for those that find the riding too difficult.

Biking Conditions: We ride between 30 km and 160 km a day. The roads are 100% tarmac and overall in good condition, but there can be short, rough, potholed sections. We will slow down through these and ride carefully.

Day 1 Meet in Saigon

We meet at the hotel in Saigon at 3 pm (you can check in from 2 pm) for a city tour. The first stop will be Reunification Hall, formerly known as the Presidential Palace, and it was this modern building that North Vietnamese tanks seized on the morning of April 30, 1975, marking the fall of Saigon. From there, we stroll to the major sights of colonial Ho Chi Minh City: The Old Saigon Post Office, Dong Khoi Street (formerly Rue Catinat), Continental Hotel, the Opera House, and City Hall. In the evening, we go over our upcoming tour and have a welcome dinner.

Day 2 Saigon – Phan Thiet

This morning we transfer about 2.25 hours out of the vibrant city to avoid the chaotic traffic. We start riding along a coastal road to Phan Thiet, which has one of the best beaches in Vietnam. We cycle past Ke Ga Cape near the Ta Kou National Reserve as we ride north to Phan Thiet. Our quiet, flat road runs between sand dunes, pine forests, and the sea. A white sand beach is waiting for you at the end of the day!

road bike tour vietnam

Day 3 Phan Thiet – Dalat

We stick to the coastline for a flat and fast start before our inland route starts to climb on the journey towards Dalat, a hill station town at more than 1,500 m. At the 90-km mark, we climb over 700m in just 10 km and then get a bit of a break before our last push until Di Linh. En-route, we ascend a total of 2000m on quiet roads but we'll take several breaks, including one at Dai Ninh hydroelectric dam. Feel free to hop into the support vehicle for any section of this tough ride. From Di Linh, we take a transfer (to avoid busy roads) to our hotel in Dalat. Enjoy the views and colonial atmosphere of the town with the surrounding pine trees that this city is known for.

road bike tour vietnam

Day 4 Dalat – Madagui

We are rewarded for yesterday's climbing efforts with an overall descending day riding down over 2000m. It is also a picturesque ride through numerous banana and rubber plantations in the rich, red earth that marks the Central Highlands. This is also where Vietnam’s finest teas and coffees are grown. We end the day in scenic Di Linh, nestled in Vietnam’s central highlands. From here we transfer to the city of Madagui. We cross a suspension bridge over the Da Huoai River to reach our rooms.

road bike tour vietnam

Day 5 Madagui – Cu Chi

Transfer 1.5 hours to the starting point and avoid the busy national road. Our first cycling section goes through pepper and cashew farms. The route leads us to the Tri An Lake and dam with a hydroelectric station with the capacity of 320,000 kw that supplies Dong Nai province and the surrounding area with electricity. There are 2 ferry crossings today. After the first one, you will get into closer to pomelo farms, eucalyptus forests, and then coffee and rubber plantations. After the second one, you go through the new city of Binh Duong and enter the Cu Chi tunnel area. Just 20 km more to get to our resort for the night.

road bike tour vietnam

Day 6 Cu Chi – Moc Bai Border – Phnom Penh

You can enjoy the swimming pool, green spaces, and leisurely breakfast at Les Hameaux de l'Orient before getting ready for the last section in Vietnam to approach the Cambodian border at Moc Bai. Cycling along rice fields and canals on a good and flat route. Once formalities are done, we can enter Cambodia and catch our first glimpses of rural Cambodian life. We have an easy cycle past traditional wooden houses on stilts framed by a backdrop of vast rice fields. Once we arrive in the quiet provincial town of Kor An Doeuk, we transfer about 2.5 hours by private vehicle to Phnom Penh

road bike tour vietnam

Day 7 Phnom Penh Rest Day

Today you have the full day free to Phnom Penh at your leisure. Lunch and dinner are on your own, so you can explore different food options. Feel free to ask the guide for suggestions and tips!

Day 8 Phnom Penh – Kampong Cham

After breakfast, we cycle out of Phnom Penh's busy traffic towards a Japanese bridge and start cycling first over a busy stretch of road and then through the Cambodian countryside. You will share the road with light local traffic and get a good sense of what Cambodian transportation actually is. Our first cultural stop is at Roka Kaong, before heading on to the town of Skun, known as the Spider Town. Our road takes us into Kampong Cham province, where we'll visit the Khmer temples of Phnom Pros and Phnom Srie. Nearby were Khmer Rouge extermination camps called "killing fields" from 1975 to 1979. We'll complete a final stretch of riding to our hotel before regrouping in the evening for a traditional Khmer meal.

Day 9 Kampong Cham - Kampong Thom

After breakfast, we'll begin riding along the Mekong River to Hanchey Mountain to check out one of the many Khmer temples scattered on its peak. Then we'll continue the ride through Cambodian countryside, passing rice paddies and rubber plantations. Near the end of the ride, you'll have the opportunity to visit Santuk Mountain. With over 800 steps, it offers expansive views of the plains and Cambodian countryside.

Day 10 Kampong Tom - Preah Vihear

The ride from Stueng Saen goes north and passes through the Boeng Peae Wildlife Sanctuary, a scenic jungled area home to ancient, Angkor-style temples. Enjoy the lush scenery and some mild climbs before heading out onto the undulating terrain of the Cambodian countryside. Once in Preah Vihear, transfer to the hotel by van, check in and have a shower, before heading out again to visit Preah Vihear temple, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Dedicated to the god Shiva, Preah Vihear temple is impressively carved and sits 500 meters above the surrounding Cambodian plains.

Day 11 Preah Vihear – Siem Reap

Today's ride begins from the hotel and cycles through Kulen Prum Tep Wildlife Sanctuary. This region of the country is very rural, and the wildlife sanctuary is a quiet and lightly forested plain, offering a side a of Cambodia not often seen by foreign tourists. In the afternoon, the opportunity to visit the jungled ruins of Beng Mealea temple, only recently made accessible. After lunch, you have the option to transfer by car to Siem Reap, or complete the last section by road bike!

Day 12 Siem Reap – Angkor Wat

This morning, we start our bike ride to the entrance of Angkor Wat and head to Ta Prohm, famous from the film “Tomb Raider”, deliberately left by French conservationists in the same condition as it was discovered – over-grown by strangler fig and silk-cotton trees, giving the temple a mystical and romantic appeal. We continue to Angkor Thom, Bayon Temple, and the Terrace of the Elephants. We enjoy lunch at the Angkor Café before we explore the biggest religious Hindu edifice in the world - Angkor Wat. Considered the masterpiece of Khmer architecture, this Vishnuite temple is the king’s funerary temple, which is why the temple faces west. Inside the temple, the walls are covered with carvings and bas reliefs depicting Hindu mythology and the wars Suryavarman II fought during his reign. After our visit to these magnificent temples, we cycle back the 7 km to Siem Reap. We meet up for our farewell dinner.

Day 13 Siem Reap – Departure

We enjoy a free morning taking in the sights and sounds of Siem Reap, before we head to the airport for onward flights.

Disclaimer: The adventure cycling tours we operate often go beyond the beaten track, and the countries where we ride are not always predictable. Due to these reasons, it is occasionally necessary to reroute or update itineraries. Our guarantee is that we will not change a trip unless for safety or to improve it. Our listed hotels are always accurate at the time of writing, but should we have to change any hotel, it will always be for a similar or better one.

Nuts & Bolts

Because some people can't imagine going on a trip without their own beloved bicycle, we do not provide them as part of this tour. However, you can hire bikes locally for the price listed in the tour pricing section.

If you bring your own bike, please make sure it is a road bike in good mechanical order.

Bike Repairs

Basic spares and tools are carried by the guide and on the support vehicle, though we cannot guarantee having spares for every conceivable problem. Carrying a basic tool kit, a spare tube and a pump while riding is recommended.

Wearing a helmet is required on all our biking adventures and is non negotiable. If you do not wear a helmet you will not be allowed to cycle. Your tour leader is trained in first aid and emergency rescue, but to a large degree you must be responsible for your own safety while riding. It is therefore compulsory that you take out travel insurance that will cover you for a mountain biking tour.

You will be led by a local English-speaking guide and if the group is 9 people or more we will add another guide to the tour. All our guides are well informed in the history, culture and religions of the area where you are biking and are skilled at passing that knowledge on to you. Your guide is also medically trained and an experienced cyclist, able to handle most minor repairs en route.

The Nitty Gritty

Passports and visas.

If your nationality is not on the list for e-visa eligibility, or you need options for longer stays or multiple entries, then you may consider Visa on Arrival. The process for this is more complicated than e-visa and requires the acquisition of a visa letter prior to arrival. Please see here for a detailed overview.

Recommended vaccinations are typhoid, polio, tetanus and hepatitis A. A certificate for Yellow Fever is required when arriving from an infected area within six days. Vietnam is a malarial area and you will need to take anti-malarial tablets. Please speak to your doctor for the most up to date information.

Weather in Vietnam is divided into 4 main regions - the far north, north, central and south.

The far north can get very cold in December and January while the dry season runs from October to late March and the wet season between April to September.

In Hanoi & the north, it is hot, wet and humid from May to October while November to April is cooler and dry.

Central Vietnam experiences hot, dry weather between January & August with temperatures ranging in the mid 30°C. High levels of rainfall are during September - November.

Southern Vietnam is dry and hot from November to April, and warm and wet between May & October, with the highest rainfall in June, July & August.

Meals are included as per the itinerary where B = breakfast, L = lunch, D = dinner. Most meals are Vietnamese food and features noodles, rice curries and soups. Vietnamese cuisine is world famous and we make sure you sample as much variety as possible. Any special dietary requirements can also be catered for as well. Please let us know at the time of booking.

Keeping you completely hydrated is a job we take very seriously. Cold water, some energy-restoring local fruit, and soft drinks are included in the tour price while riding. Soft drinks and other beverages during meals are not included. Beer is freely available everywhere in Vietnam but is NOT included in the price.

Solo Travelers

SpiceRoads does not require you to pay a surcharge for traveling alone. We will arrange for you to share accommodation with another traveler of the same gender and if we can not match you up we will provide a single room at no extra charge. If you prefer not to share a single supplement is payable to guarantee your own room. The cost of the single supplement is listed above.

Extra Expenses

We recommend that you tuck away a few extra dollars, perhaps US$10, for incidentals. It is customary to tip local tour guides and drivers, however, the amount you give should be dependent on the level of service you receive. As a general guide, we suggest US$ 3-4 per person per day is appropriate.

The official national currency is the Vietnam dong (d), but the US dollar is widely accepted in tourist centers. However, in smaller towns and villages the dong is preferred. ATMs are available in all major tourist destinations and big cities. Vietcombank has the best network with a single withdrawal limit of 2,000,000d (about US$125). Most major currencies can be exchanged at leading banks in Vietnam, but the US dollar is preferred away from the tourist centers. Changing US$100 will make you an instant millionaire! You cannot legally take the dong out of Vietnam but you can reconvert reasonable amounts of it into US dollars on departure.

We recommend that you visit a travel medical doctor and ask about the following vaccinations: typhoid, polio, tetanus and hepatitis A. A certificate for Yellow Fever is required when arriving from an infected area within six days.

Cambodia has two distinct seasons - wet and dry. The dry season usually lasts from October to April. The wet season starts in May until September. Within each season there are variations in temperature. The coolest being 24C around November/December and hottest hitting 35C around April/May.

Meals are included as per the itinerary where B = breakfast, L = lunch, D = dinner. Most meals are local and feature noodles, rice, curries, and soups. Cambodian cuisine is a mixture of Thai, French and Chinese dishes and we make sure you can sample a wide variety. Any special dietary requirements can also be catered for as well. Please let us know at the time of booking.

Thai baht and US dollars are widely used in Cambodia, especially in larger cities and towns. In smaller towns and villages, Cambodian riels are usually preferred. There are ATMs in most areas, however, machines dispense US dollars. The guides will be able to show you where the ATMs are. Spend riel before departing as no one will exchange them for you once you leave.

Just call us or send an email indicating which trip you want to join and we will happily send you a list of questions and process your booking for you.

DEPOSITS AND PAYMENTS

We do not require a deposit or full payment to book a place for you on a tour.

The balance of the tour’s cost (final invoice) will need to be paid 60 days before the departure date with fees for any bicycle rental(s), single supplement(s) and extra hotel nights.

In the case where a booking is made when there are less than 60 days until the tour departure date, the tour’s cost should be paid in full within 72 hours of receiving an invoice from SpiceRoads. Payment can be made by credit card using our online payment gateway or by bank transfer. When making payment online you will need to confirm that you have read these booking conditions during the "checkout" process, which equates to agreeing to the terms of services and stipulations as indicated in this document.

In all cases, tour fees need to be paid “in full” before participation in a tour. No person(s) will be allowed to join a tour without fully settling their invoice and receiving a confirmation number from SpiceRoads.

The exception can be made for last-minute miscellaneous fees that can be paid locally (visas, additional local hotel bookings, etc.) can be settled on the day of arrival.

FULL FLEXIBILITY FOR TOUR CANCELATIONS

If the tour is cancelled or postponed by SpiceRoads because we didn't make the trip numbers and the tour can’t run, we will make a full cash refund (by bank transfer or on your credit card).

If the tour is cancelled for any other reason, including due to Covid related travel restrictions, we will give you a full credit (with no deductions for admin or any other small-print item) to use on any SpiceRoads tour with no time limit. (Exceptions being flights, special permits and other non-refundable items and these will be advised when booking the trip).

Before paying for your tour, you can cancel your booking with no charge and up until 40 days before departure, you can change your booking to another travel date or move your booking onto another SpiceRoads tour with no charges.
