Preview ROGER WATERS - Oslo 2023-04-11 & 12

  • Roger Waters
  • Telenor Arena Oslo

rogerwaters oslo2023

“This will probably be the last time ROGER WATERS comes to Norway and he will do so with his biggest show ever! It will be a journey through PINK FLOYD’s world with 100 tons of sound and a light rig hanging from the ceiling of Telenor Arena” says Rune Lem, Senior Promoter in Live Nation Norway. Roger Waters will play 40 concerts in 14 European countries on his tour this year. The show features 20 classics from PINK FLOYD and ROGER WATERS, including: ‘Us & Them’, ‘Comfortably Numb’, ‘Wish You Were Here’ and ‘Is This The Life We Really Want?’ .In addition, he debuts the new song, ‘The Bar’. Alongside vocals, WATERS plays both guitars, bass and piano, and with him on stage he has Jonathan Wilson (guitars, vocals), Dave Kilminster (guitars, vocals), Jon Carin (keyboards, guitar, vocals), Gus Seyffert (bass, vocals), Robert Walter (keyboards), Joey Waronker (drums), Shanay Johnson (vocals), Amanda Belair (vocals) and Seamus Blake (saxophone). “‘This Is Not A Drill’ is a ground-breaking new Rock and Roll / Cinematic extravaganza, performed in the round, it is a stunning indictment of the corporate dystopia in which we all struggle to survive, and a call to action to Love, Protect and Share our precious and precarious planet home. The show includes a dozen great songs from PINK FLOYD’s Golden Era alongside several new ones, words and music, same writer, same heart, same soul, same man. Could be his last hurrah. Wow! My first farewell tour! Don’t miss it”. Love R. Use this chance to experience this significant musician’s spectacular show! Reviews “Concertgoers on their way out could be heard debating whether or not this is the best tour they’ve seen from Waters. One thing’s for certain, it’s not to be missed – and also a show which will leave you deep in thought about both the world and yourself.” - Ultimate Classic Rock “Waters succeeded two-fold. First, by plastering awareness on the atrocities that the human race has continued to endure - most of which could be avoided without greed, gluttony and warmongering. And secondly with a well-curated display of his, often-dubbed, musical genius... One can never be disappointed by a Roger Waters production and this show was no exception.” - Glide Magazine Tickets Tickets: NOK 1,550 / NOK 990 / NOK 780 + tax at https://www.livenation.no/artist-roger-waters-439 VIP PACKAGES 1. In other news, Waters penned an open letter to Ukraine’s first lady, Olena Zelenska, earlier this month , suggesting she persuade her husband to work toward a ceasefire with Russia and “stop the slaughter”.

The letter from the former Pink Floyd member comes by way of response to Zelenska’s interview on the BBC program  Sunday with Laura Kuenssberg , which aired on September 4.

Waters begins by saying his “heart bleeds for you and all the Ukrainian and Russian families, devastated by the terrible war in Ukraine”. He then argued against the West providing armaments to Ukraine, suggesting it would be better to “seek a different route”.

He wrote: “If by ‘support for Ukraine’ you mean the West continuing to supply arms to the Kiev government’s armies, I fear you may be tragically mistaken.

“Throwing fuel, in the form of armaments, into a fire fight… won’t work now, particularly because, in this case, most of the fuel is (a) being thrown into the fire from Washington, DC… and (b) because the ‘fuel throwers’ have already declared an interest in the war going on for as long as possible.”

He continued: “Please help me in my honest endeavors to persuade our leaders to stop the slaughter, the slaughter which serves only the interests of the ruling classes and extreme nationalists both here in the West, and in your beautiful country, at the expense of the rest of us ordinary people both here in the West, and in the Ukraine, and in fact ordinary people everywhere all over the world.”

Roger Waters Shares More 2023 Dates

roger waters tour 2023 oslo

Roger Waters has announced many more 2023 concerts of his “This is Not a Drill” tour. The Pink Floyd singer-songwriter-bass guitarist is performing the shows in the round for the first time, and recently completed shows in the U.S., Canada and Mexico, in a tour delayed two full years due to the ongoing pandemic. See the complete itinerary below.

It was reported that Waters had cancelled concerts in Krakow, Poland. Not so, he wrote on Sept. 24. He says local authorities there urged people not to buy tickets. He explains the circumstances here .

In the tour’s original announcement, Waters said: “This is Not a Drill is a ground breaking new rock and roll/cinematic extravaganza, performed in the round, it is a stunning indictment of the corporate dystopia in which we all struggle to survive, and a call to action to LOVE, PROTECT and SHARE our precious and precarious planet home. The show includes a dozen great songs from PINK FLOYD’S GOLDEN ERA along side several new ones, words and music, same writer, same heart, same soul, same man. Could be his last hurrah. Wow! My first farewell tour! Don’t miss it. Love R.”

Though Waters’ original dates weren’t scheduled to commence until July 8, 2020, he recognized the scope of the pandemic early, and announced its postponement on March 27 of that year.

In his 2020 postponement announcement, the legend noted, “Bummer, but if it saves one life it’s worth it.” The tour finally opened on July 6, 2022.

Watch a performance from opening night

The original tour announcement referred to the musician as “the creative genius of Pink Floyd.” He turned 79 on Sept. 6, 2022.

Pink Floyd fans who are still holding out hope for a reunion of the band’s three remaining members received bad news in March 2021. The knock-out punch was delivered by David Gilmour. In an  interview with Guitar Player , the guitarist was asked if the classic rock legends would reunite.

“No. I’m done with it,” he said. “I’ve had a life in Pink Floyd for quite a lot of years, and quite a few of those years at the beginning, with Roger. And those years in what is now considered to be our heyday were 95 percent musically fulfilling and joyous and full of fun and laughter.”

The new tour is playing many venues not seen on his recent Us + Them tour.

Waters, a founding member of Pink Floyd, has made several public comments on Ukraine over the last year, appearing to side with Putin’s war and criticizing Western efforts to support the Ukrainians with arms. The resulting international controversy has cast a dark shadow over the 79-year-old star’s “first ever” farewell tour This is not a drill.

The tour initially included 40 shows in 14 European countries. Waters’ remarks on Ukraine disappointed many fans and sparked widespread outrage, however, including cancellation of planned concerts in Poland.

roger waters tour 2023 oslo

News of those cancellations broke last September, just after tickets went on sale for Waters’ two gigs in Norway. The two shows, at Telenor Arena just outside Oslo, never sold out. Instead, ads for discounted second-hand tickets were plentiful for months on Finn.no , a popular online marketplace owned by media conglomerate Schibsted. There were blocks of empty high-priced seats just before showtime.

By midday on Wednesday, just hours before the final show, a search on Finn returned well over 100 ads offering one or more tickets, many at half or “negotiable” prices. One ad even said that the proceeds from tickets, if sold, would be donated to a local charity shipping second-hand fire trucks, ambulances and other emergency equipment to Ukraine, with the buyer being promised a receipt.

Waters had clearly upset more than a few fans, despite being generally known (and forgiven) for tough politicical views and expressing them through his art and in other ways. His latest visit to Oslo was in stark contrast to one in 2018, when he was also invited to speak at the Nobel Peace Center in Oslo. This time, there’s more talk about his recent video appearance at the UN Security Council, where he spoke on invitation from the Russian delegation.

While some disappointed and confused ticket-holders spent recent weeks agonizing over what to do on concert day, they were also encouraged to boycott it. “Any human with a moral compass should put (his or her) consumer power to work,” argued Bård Larsen, a historian with Civita, a liberal-conservative think-tank. Writing in newspaper VG in February, Larsen urged fans and readers not to show up for Waters’ shows.

“By going to a Roger Waters concert , you will participate in a grotesque, grandiose political statement,” Larsen wrote. “You should know that this is what you’re spending time, money and attention on, while the bombs are raining over Ukrainian cities where no rock stars can play concerts anymore.”

Newspaper Dagbladet  contacted seven of those trying to sell their tickets online, independently of each other. “It’s because of his statements. He’s promoting the narrative than the West and NATO are partly to blame and forced Russia to go to war,” one seller told Dagbladet . Another seller, Nikolai Myrvoll-Larsen, said he and his group of friends said they’d not go to the show if their tickets didn’t sell.

roger waters tour 2023 oslo

A spokesperson for the organizer of both shows, Live Nation Norway, declined to comment on ticket sales. As the second concert was underway on Wednesday several seats remained empty as Pink Floyd’s trademark giant inflatable sheep and pig hovered over the audience.

At showtime, the audience was told to not just turn off telephones, but also that “if you’re the type who likes Pink Floyd, but not Roger Waters and his politics, you can **** off to the bar.” The “bar” is apparently a metaphoric place where Waters would like to have conversation with both fans and foes. It’s also a song title from his substantial solo production, some of which was included in the show along with Pink Floyd classics such as Money from Dark side of the moon , one of the best-selling music albums ever. It was released in 1973. Most major newspapers carried lengthy articles on its recent 50th anniversary, knowing that Pink Floyd still has a huge following in Norway.

“Quarreling among band members has been an ongoing soap opera since they recorded The Final Cut in 1983, but it’s getting harder and harder to avoid Waters’ pushy personality and political views,” columnist Audun Vinger wrote in newspaper DN at the time . “Is it possible to listen to Pink Floyd witout thinking about all this, both the success and the problems? It’s worth a try.”

Roger Waters is the only original Pink Floyd member in his 10-person tour band, which comes across more like a competent tribute band than the real thing. The advertising portrays Waters as “the creator of the golden years of Pink Floyd,” although those years and their string of brilliant albums are remembered by most other people as a genuine group effort. “The only Pink Floyd album where Waters decided everything, The Final Cut , isn’t exactly a high point of the band’s catalogue,” commentator Espen Hauglid wrote in weekly Morgenbladet .

Most major media covered the Waters shows in Oslo, with newspaper VG calling it “surprisingly dull, despite spectacular effects, theatrical gestures and a political passion that we just have to assume is heartfelt.” It called Waters a “troublemaker in free fall.”

Newspaper Aftenposten labeled the two-and-a-half-hour-long show an “Orwellian rock opera,” with dystopian video art, written slogans, and special effects distracting from the music, adding that “it’s challenging to separate music from musician when Waters’ songs are so dominated by both his personality and political position.”

Roger Waters review – embattled singer vows ‘I will not be cancelled’

Utilita Arena, Birmingham Ex-Pink Floyd singer jettisons imagery that has led to accusations of antisemitism in Germany – and the result makes for a more powerful show

‘I f you’re one of those ‘I love Pink Floyd but I can’t stand Roger’s politics’ people, then you might do well to fuck off to the bar,” announces the singer via a recorded message before the show. There isn’t a mass stampede, although the “can’t stand Roger’s politics” people have certainly been vocal lately. He’s been called an antisemite and “Putin apologist” by Polly Samson , wife of ex-bandmate David Gilmour, who gave her tweet his approval. Waters has condemned the invasion of Ukraine but been denounced in the country for also saying it “was not unprovoked” , views which led to Polish concerts being cancelled. He won a legal battle to perform in Frankfurt after more accusations of antisemitism (which he denies). Last week it was reported that German police are investigating him over a “Nazi-style” costume worn on stage in Berlin.

Here, Waters tackles all this head-on. A screened statement points out that a satirical “depiction of an unhinged fascist demagogue” has been part of his shows since The Wall in 1980 and that his father was killed fighting the Nazis. Then he launches into a 10-minute tirade in which he decries his “brutal” treatment in Germany and says that the Daily Mail, the Times and the Daily Telegraph are trying to destroy him over his support for human rights in Palestine. “They’re trying to cancel me like they cancelled Jeremy Corbyn and Julian Assange,” he rages. “I will not be cancelled.” By the time he thanks the crowd for their support, the 79-year-old is tearful. “I’m fucking dying here,” he pleads.

Roger Waters on stage in Birmingham.

There’s no sign of the “Nazi-style” leather coat in this performance. Nor, unlike previous tours, is there a star of David on the Pink Floyd-style flying pig or any other antisemitic tropes. When Waters wades into the Palestine/Israel situation, it’s with a sensitivity he hasn’t always demonstrated. There are images of Palestinians living in shacks and the slogan “You can’t have humanitarian rights and an occupation.” Notably, among images of people murdered by authoritarian forces such as Blair Peach and 22-year old Iranian Mahsa Amini, there’s one of Anne Frank, above the words “Her crime? Being Jewish,” though to many, this might seem belated, even insultingly so.

As ever with Waters, much of the show veers between anti-war, anti-imperialist and humanitarian. A funereal version of Pink Floyd’s Comfortably Numb is illustrated by images of bombed out buildings, as if to suggest we’re numbed to warfare. Various US presidents are branded “war criminals”. Screen messages support everything from Black Lives Matter to trans rights. Some of the imagery – dollars for Money – feels a bit hokey, but the faces of children killed in war are haunting. Waters chillingly suggests “we’re closer to a nuclear confrontation than ever before”. However, apart from a screen slogan about “fucking oligarchs” and a fleeting image of Putin, references to Russia or Ukraine are conspicuously absent, which might be an attempt to defuse further controversy but seems an extraordinary omission from a supposed anti-war campaigner.

For all the sloganeering (“Fuck the patriarchy!”, “Free Assange!”, or “Control the narrative!” during Another Brick in the Wall) much of this show is personal. The new piano-led The Bar – composed in lockdown about the virtues of the pub – is lovely and there are touching reminiscences about Syd Barrett when they were kids. There’s lots to thrill the “I love Pink Floyd” people, with swathes of the classic Dark Side of the Moon and Wish You Were Here albums rendered by a stellar band. The latter’s title track, taken up by the entire crowd as a wider anthem of loss, is beautifully moving. The show is a triumph of staging, with remote-controlled flying sheep, cross-shaped screens the length of the arena and almost two and a half hours of music that ends with an ovation. Waters’ politics will continue to anger many, but anyone fleeing for the bar will miss a true spectacular.

Roger Waters is an English musician, singer-songwriter and composer. In 1965, he co-founded the progressive rock band Pink Floyd. Waters initially served as the bassist, but following the departure of singer-songwriter Syd Barrett in 1968, he also became their lyricist, co-lead vocalist and conceptual leader until his departure in 1983.

In 1990, Waters staged one of the largest rock concerts in history, The Wall – Live in Berlin, with an attendance of 450,000. As a member of Pink Floyd, he was inducted into the US Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1996 and the UK Music Hall of Fame in 2005.

Later that year, he reunited with Pink Floyd bandmates Nick Mason, Richard Wright, and David Gilmour for the Live 8 global awareness event, the group's only appearance with Waters since 1981. He has toured extensively as a solo act since 1999; he performed The Dark Side of the Moon in its entirety for his world tour of 2006–2008, and the Wall Live tour of 2010–2013 was the highest-grossing tour by a solo artist at the time.
